In this episode, Stephanie shares their essay, “My Life, and Being Wrong,” from Wildfire Journal's 2022 Legacy Stories issue. Raised in the canyons as the son of a science professor, Phil Millett developed a deep love for the natural world at an early age. While other kids spent their time on ball fields and in gyms, Phil wandered mountains and streams, searching for understanding in the world around him. Over time, those experiences led him not away from faith, but toward it. On this week's episode, Phil shares how nature has helped him recognize evidence of a divine Creator—and the spiritual lessons he's learned from a lifetime of exploring God's creations. 2:10- Falling in Love With Mother Nature 5:19- Cycles 8:05- Creation 12:05- Absolute Truth 17:22- The Brotherhood of the Rope 33:04- The Loss of a Best Friend and the Atonement 48:07- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ? JJ Millett Case: A Platoon Mate's Perspective on Mental Health and Justice In part four of my Oscar Mike Radio series on JJ Millett, I sit down with his former platoon mate, Chad Abbott, for a powerful and deeply personal conversation. Chad served alongside JJ in the Vermont Army National Guard and describes him as a calm, kindhearted veteran who served honorably in Afghanistan. JJ always looked out for others. That's why he was shocked when he learned about the domestic terrorism charges JJ now faces following a mental health crisis. From Chad's firsthand experience, he makes it clear: these charges don't reflect the man he knows. In this episode, we dig into serious concerns surrounding the veteran crisis line system, the impact of sudden medication changes on mental health, and the broader consequences of criminalizing veterans who are trying to get help. Chad speaks candidly about why he believes the charges are excessive, unjust, and potentially harmful not just for JJ, but for the entire veteran community. This conversation is about more than one veteran. It's about how we respond when those who served raise their hand and ask for help. It's about accountability, compassion, and ensuring that support systems work the way they're intended to. Chad calls for community support and for the charges against JJ to be dropped, significantly reduced, or dropped altogether, because the stakes extend far beyond a single case. If you care about veterans, mental health, and doing what's right, this is an episode you need to hear. JJ, you are not alone.
JJ Millett's Story: When a Cry for Help Becomes a Call for Action In part three of my Oscar Mike Radio series on JJ Millett, I sit down with his aunt, Emily Wheeler, to share a story that demands both attention and action. Emily describes JJ as a kind, respectful Army National Guard veteran who served in Afghanistan and later battled PTSD after returning home. Like so many veterans, he carried invisible wounds that don't simply fade with time. We talked about the moment everything changed. In February, while experiencing severe side effects from VA-prescribed medication, JJ did exactly what we ask our veterans to do: he reached out for help and called a mental health crisis hotline. He cooperated fully with the authorities. Yet today, he faces serious charges that could result in a 20-year sentence. That reality should stop all of us in our tracks. In this episode, I share Emily's perspective and why she is urging the public to speak out. We discuss the dangerous precedent of criminalizing veterans for seeking mental health support, and how that could discourage others from reaching out when they need it most. This is bigger than one case. It's about how we respond when veterans ask for help. It's about whether we meet that moment with compassion, or consequences. If this story moves you, I encourage you to make your voice heard: You can write the Attorney’s office on JJ’s behalf or call directly. Please be polite when communicating with the Attorney’s office. See below for contact information. Orleans County State's Attorney's Officec/o Attorney Farzana Leyva & Attorney Vincent Illuzzi217 Main St #2Newport, VT 05855Phone: 802-334-2037 We need to amplify this story, not just for JJ, but for veterans everywhere who are fighting battles most people never see. JJ, you are not alone.
This episode of Oscar Mike Radio is one of the most emotional and urgent conversations I've had. I sat down with Elizabeth Dubois, MBA, Ph.D. She is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Albany and the cousin of Army National Guard veteran JJ Millet, to talk about a situation that raises serious questions about how we treat veterans in crisis. What we discussed isn't easy, but it's necessary. What Happened to JJ Millet JJ is currently facing domestic terrorism charges following a psychiatric crisis. A crisis that was reportedly triggered by a change in medication prescribed through the VA system. As Elizabeth walked me through the timeline, one thing became clear: JJ didn't act out of malice; he reached out for help. He decided to call the 988 crisis line He voluntarily surrendered his weapons He took steps that, to me, reflect someone trying to do the right thing in a moment of distress Those actions don't look like a threat; they look like someone asking for help. When Seeking Help Becomes a Risk One of the most troubling parts of this conversation was learning how JJ's personal therapeutic journals were characterized. What were intended as private tools for healing were initially labeled as a “manifesto.” That kind of mischaracterization carries serious weight, and serious consequences. Because it raises a difficult but important question: What message does this send to other veterans? If someone in crisis does everything we encourage, calls for help, surrenders weapons, seeks support, yet still faces severe criminal charges, what does that do to trust in the system? A Bigger Issue Than One Case Elizabeth and JJ are united in one message: This is bigger than one person. This is about: Mental health support for veterans Accountability in how cases like this are handled Ensuring that seeking help never becomes a liability Protecting those who have already served and sacrificed Because when the system fails, even once, it creates hesitation for others who might be on the edge of reaching out. And hesitation, in moments of crisis, can be dangerous. Compassion, Not Fear What stayed with me most after this conversation was the need for compassion. Veterans should never feel like asking for help could lead to punishment. They should feel supported, understood, and protected. That's the standard we should be holding ourselves to. How You Can Help You can make a difference. Start by sharing JJ's story. Start conversations. Raise awareness about the importance of mental health support for veterans. Because change begins when people are willing to speak up. Final Thoughts JJ, you are not alone. And to Elizabeth, thank you for your courage in telling this story and standing up for your family. This conversation is a reminder that we still have work to do, but it's also a call to action. We are Oscar Mike, Mission in Flight.
JJ Strong: A Veteran's Story That Reminds Us Why Compassion Matters This episode of Oscar Mike Radio is one of the most personal and emotional conversations I've ever had. I sat down with Courtney Millett to talk about her brother, Joseph “JJ” Millett. Not as a headline, not as a court case, but as a human being. A brother. A veteran. Someone who served his country and came home carrying wounds most people will never fully understand. Courtney speaks openly about JJ's military service and his ongoing battle with PTSD. She shares what happened when everything changed, and how what should have been a cry for help turned into something far more painful for their family: confusion, fear, and the shock of watching a mental health crisis treated like a crime instead of a call for compassion. This episode isn't just about JJ. It represents something much bigger. It's about veterans who feel like they have to suffer in silence. It's about families trying to stay strong while watching someone they love struggle. And it's about the urgent need to respond to mental health challenges with empathy, understanding, and real support, not punishment. If you listen to one episode that reminds you how powerful compassion can be, let it be this one. Because behind every headline is a human story. We are JJ Strong.
150 Years Ago (March 1876) Two young men from Peekskill opened a pistol-shooting practice gallery in the Lloyds building (the former Methodist Episcopal Church). In their first organized competition, in which shooters stood erect and fired from 55 feet, William Ladue won the silver cup, hitting the target with 25 of 25, 48 of 50 and 446 of 500 shots. On his last target, he fired five consecutive shots within an inch of each other inside the bull's eye. In a sermon at the Baptist Church, the Rev. C.J. Page explained how a Christian's dying day was better than his birthday. The Cold Spring budget included funds to improve Parsonage Street between Main and Pine and deepen the well on Stone Street. A boat filled with lumber that sank near the lighthouse at West Point was raised and towed to shore to be unloaded. At Fort Montgomery, two amateur actors were wed by the Rev. Mr. Millett as part of a play. The next day, the woman claimed it had been a legal marriage. The ballot for the annual Cold Spring election included 20 candidates for trustee, 10 for assessor, 11 for street commissioner and eight for fire warden. A four-day warm spell that began March 5 swept away the last vestige of snow in the village and ice on the Hudson. The barn of Charles and Daniel Hustis, on the road to Fishkill just north of the North Highland schoolhouse, caught fire at 8 p.m. on a Wednesday. The brothers managed to get two horses out, but Charles nearly lost his life enticing one of the other two. Neighbors gathered, but nothing could be done. The brothers lost the horses, wagons, harnesses, farming utensils, a mowing machine, grain and hay. That same night, at 11 p.m., Pierce Denny walked outside his family's home in Putnam Valley and noticed a bright light in the northern room, where a fire had been kept part of the day. Because they had difficulty rescuing a blind boarder, Maria Davenport, Denny and a laborer, John Van Buskirk, had time only to save one item: a melodeon. Josiah Hustis, 60, of North Highland, after serving as a pallbearer at the funeral of Mrs. Shaw, returned home and complained of pain at the base of his skull. He was taken by neighbors to his sister's home in Fishkill, but died there within an hour. The Cold Spring Library Association canceled a free evening of literary readings and music after spectators filled all 450 seats and every corner at Town Hall, including the stairwells and stage. The editor of the Cold Spring Recorder scolded the organizers for the debacle and said he would no longer advertise free events. "Ten cents for admission and ten cents' worth of common sense would have made the evening a pleasure," he wrote. However, the next week, he reversed himself when the association said the rescheduled event would require a free ticket. In a commentary entitled "Youthful Depravity," the Recorder editor wrote: "It is a pity that we cannot, in some way, mete out punishment by the laws to that worse class of sins — those which lie way down in the dirty soul. But alas, the spirit of our laws is to punish the effect and leave the cause to produce other effects. We refer to the arrest of several schoolboys and self-esteemed young men for breaking the windows and otherwise damaging John Chase's house [at Breakneck] on the night of the 4th. [Chase had apparently been accused of living with a woman without being married.] The injury to the property is the far lesser crime — the devilish instinct which leads our lads to chase every filthy, drunken and beastly creature in woman's form which comes within 2 miles of the village is 10,000 times worse than the occasional tearing down of a railroad shanty." Joseph Cox came into town for the first time since Dr. George Murdock removed his right eye. The sheriff sold the stock of William Coleman, the bankrupt West Street grocer. The Kellogg Opera Troupe, led by Philipstown resident Clara Louise Kellogg, was touring New England. The Recorder noted that more than 100 inches of snow had f...

Send us a textNathan and Ruben Millett's journey to founding NARU Landscaping began with personal transformation. After 20 years in specialized police units left Nathan with PTSD, he discovered nature's profound healing power – a simple vista of wall, cactus, and blue sky became his mental sanctuary. Meanwhile, Ruben, naturally skilled with his hands since childhood, was seeking his true calling after brief stints in electrical work and estate agency.Their worlds collided over pints at "the NARU corner" of their local pub, where father and son realised their complementary skills could create something special. Combining their names (NAthon and RUben), they formed "NARU" – a name that serendipitously means "new beginnings" in Japanese and "growth" in Nigerian languages. What distinguishes their approach is their revolutionary 10-point design system that flips traditional landscaping philosophy. Rather than forcing people to adapt to spaces, they create gardens that respond to emotional needs, functioning as "Control-Alt-Delete" reset buttons for stressed professionals. Every element – from seating positions to plant textures to water features – serves the garden owner's wellbeing. This isn't just about aesthetics. Nathan's PTSD journey taught him how outdoor spaces can transform mental health, while Ruben's problem-solving mindset ensures these sanctuaries are both beautiful and functional. Together, they create more than gardens – they design outdoor therapeutic environments that help clients escape life's pressures without leaving home.Whether you're seeking a complete garden transformation or just a thoughtful corner for mindful moments, NARU Landscaping invites you to reimagine your relationship with your outdoor space. Don't settle for the standard "patio, lawn, tree, bush" formula – discover how your garden can actively improve your wellbeing and quality of life.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Disclaimer:In this episode, Ben was very open and honest about his thoughts on the Mormon faith, and how, as he began to uncover his true self, he realised it wasn't working for him as a discipline. This is the opinion of Ben, we are not suggesting the Mormon faith does not work as an organisation in any shape or form. It's just that it wasn't the right fit for Ben as he progressed through his life.Ben Millett, is a quilter of both fabric and tales, sharing his narrative of self-discovery and the bold hues of his identity. Embark on a journey with us as Ben unravels the threads of coming out, the challenges of forging a new path away from the Mormon faith, and the ways in which his art has become a beacon of activism and visibility for the LGBTQ community.Crafting a quilt isn't just about stitching pieces together; it's about the stories each piece tells. Ben's story is a patchwork of courage, from the moments of vulnerability in acknowledging his sexuality to the brighter patches of embracing his true self. Throughout the episode, Ben invites us into his world, revealing the intricate ways his personal evolution is reflected in the fearless colors and patterns of his quilts. His experiences remind us that authenticity can be a form of resistance and a celebration of individuality, threading hope through the fabric of our lives. We wrap up with an affirmation for anyone teetering on the edge of self-revelation: it's never too late to weave the authentic you into the tapestry of your existence. Ben's testimony is a powerful encouragement to live out loud, to find solace in creativity, and to remember that each of us is a work of art in progress. So, for those yearning to express their true colors, we extend an invitation to connect, grow, and create with us as we continue to build a community where the vibrant threads of diverse lives are honored and uplifted.Support the show
Quilting is Ben Millett's creative outlet outside his work at an agriculture company in Des Moines, Iowa. Ben explores color and shape by applying contemporary color palettes to traditional quilt blocks, turning digital concepts into a physical reality with fabric and thread. He creates to play, to communicate ideas, to further the gay agenda, to make what he wants to see.Ben dives in a bit with Amanda about the process of entering quilts into a quilt show (and specifically QuiltCon). Ben talks about the ups and downs of it all and the mindset he espouses to keep moving forward, even in the face of rejection. As we approach QuiltCon 2024, Amanda and Ben share their excitement for attending and seeing/meeting all their quilty friends that they know on- and off-line. I would like you to picture this scenario: You're a well-respected resilience professional running a global business continuity program for a Fortune 300 company. Things are going well. Until the organization makes a sudden and drastic move. Your entire resilience team is being let go. Hello everyone and welcome to episode 117 of the Resilient Journey podcast, presented by the Resilience Think Tank. This week I'm joined by yet another resilience A-Lister as industry icon Margaret Millett joins the podcast. In this episode, Margaret walks us through her emotions as she suddenly found herself on the job market. We talk about the importance of not only finding a job but finding the RIGHT job. And it's interesting to learn the Margaret doesn't feel like what happened with her previous employer is an odd one-off. It seems that more and more among us, many in senior roles, are also looking for work. It's our goal that this episode will inspire and guide others who might find themselves in a similar situation. Be sure to follow The Resilient Journey! We sure do appreciate it! Learn more about the Resilience Think Tank here. Want to learn more about Mark? Click here or on LinkedIn or Twitter. Special thanks to Bensound for the music.
In her 1970 book “Sexual Politics” feminist critic Kate Millett devoted 20 pages to a critique of novelist and public intellectual Norman Mailer. In this episode Moira guides Adrian through Mailer's very cool, very level-headed response: a 250 page screed against Millett in particular and feminism in general.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Exaggerating the risks (Part 13: Ord on Biorisk), published by Vasco Grilo on December 31, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a crosspost to Exaggerating the risks (Part 13: Ord on Biorisk), as published by David Thorstad on 29 December 2023. This massive democratization of technology in biological sciences … is at some level fantastic. People are very excited about it. But this has this dark side, which is that the pool of people that could include someone who has … omnicidal tendencies grows many, many times larger, thousands or millions of times larger as this technology is democratized, and you have more chance that you get one of these people with this very rare set of motivations where they're so misanthropic as to try to cause … worldwide catastrophe. Toby Ord, 80,000 Hours Interview Listen to this post [there is an option for this in the original post] 1. Introduction This is Part 13 of my series Exaggerating the risks. In this series, I look at some places where leading estimates of existential risk look to have been exaggerated. Part 1 introduced the series. Parts 2-5 ( sub-series: "Climate risk") looked at climate risk. Parts 6-8 ( sub-series: "AI risk") looked at the Carlsmith report on power-seeking AI. Parts 9, 10 and 11 began a new sub-series on biorisk. In Part 9, we saw that many leading effective altruists give estimates between 1.0-3.3% for the risk of existential catastrophe from biological causes by 2100. I think these estimates are a bit too high. Because I have had a hard time getting effective altruists to tell me directly what the threat is supposed to be, my approach was to first survey the reasons why many biosecurity experts, public health experts, and policymakers are skeptical of high levels of near-term existential biorisk. Parts 9, 10 and 11 gave a dozen preliminary reasons for doubt, surveyed at the end of Part 11. The second half of my approach is to show that initial arguments by effective altruists do not overcome the case for skepticism. Part 12 examined a series of risk estimates by Piers Millett and Andrew Snyder-Beattie. We saw, first, that many of these estimates are orders of magnitude lower than those returned by leading effective altruists and second, that Millett and Snyder-Beattie provide little in the way of credible support for even these estimates. Today's post looks at Toby Ord's arguments in The Precipice for high levels of existential risk. Ord estimates the risk of irreversible existential catastrophe by 2100 from naturally occurring pandemics at 1/10,000, and the risk from engineered pandemics at a whopping 1/30. That is a very high number. In this post, I argue that Ord does not provide sufficient support for either of his estimates. 2. Natural pandemics Ord begins with a discussion of natural pandemics. I don't want to spend too much time on this issue, since Ord takes the risk of natural pandemics to be much lower than that of engineered pandemics. At the same time, it is worth asking how Ord arrives at a risk of 1/10,000. Effective altruists effectively stress that humans have trouble understanding how large certain future-related quantities can be. For example, there might be 1020, 1050 or even 10100 future humans. However, effective altruists do not equally stress how small future-related probabilities can be. Risk probabilities can be on the order of 10-2 or even 10-5, but they can also be a great deal lower than that: for example, 10-10, 10-20, or 10-50 [for example, a terrorist attack causing human extinction is astronomically unlikely on priors]. Most events pose existential risks of this magnitude or lower, so if Ord wants us to accept that natural pandemics have a 1/10,000 chance of leading to irreversible existential catastrophe by 2100, Ord owes us a solid argument for this conclusion. While Americans in general have shifted their attention away from the Russia-Ukraine War over to Israel and Hamas, Putin and Zelensky's countries are still fighting with no end in sight. This means that our country will continue to go into even more debt to support Ukraine in their fight against Russia. Hopefully, our military will not get involved. Mallory Millett and Trevor Loudon have opposing views when it comes to the Russia-Ukraine War. Loudon is pro-Ukraine and is staunchly opposed to Putin and Russia, while Mallory Millett takes the opposite approach. Today's episode of The Jeff Dornik Show features an honest conversation about these opposing views and the direct our nation should head when it comes to this continued war. SERIES 2 EPISODE 78: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The democracy will certainly not survive Donald Trump but I am now wondering if it has any chance of surviving Sarah Wallace, Patricia Millett, Cornelia Pillard, and Brad Garcia and if you don't know who they are, they are the latest people on the latest list of supposed liberals and supposed officers of the court who could get us all KILLED. Millett seems to be the most clueless of the three DC Appeals Court dilettantes who first STAYED the gag order issued against Trump in the Election Subversion case and then yesterday conducted the in-person hearing and all but announced that they WILL significantly limit the order because apparently when Trump starts ignoring laws he doesn't like and jailing judges he doesn't like, these idiots somehow think they will be immune because they were so fair to him back there in November 2023. Judge Millett seemed to base her nitwitted reaction to the two hours of oral arguments on the impact of the gag order on…presidential debates. “He has to speak ‘Miss Manners' while everyone else is throwing targets at him? It would be really hard in a debate, when everyone else is going at you full bore. Your attorneys would have to have scripted little things you can say.” Miss Manners. Trump has to speak ‘Miss Manners.' Do you get the same feeling I do that Judge Millette has no earthly clue WHO Dementia J. Trump is? Do you get the OTHER same feeling that I do that it has not occurred to, and will NEVER occur to, Judge Millette that so far there have been THREE presidential debates in the Republican primary and Trump hasn't shown up to any of them and there is no reason to expect he'd have the guts to show up to one in the general election. And THEN there is Judge Sarah Wallace and I'm not sure she didn't even harm the country MORE than Judge “Miss Manners” and Judge “I Would Assume” did. Judge Wallace heard the 14th Amendment disqualification case and at the same time that she ruled quote “that Trump incited an insurrection on January 6, 2021, and therefore ‘engaged' in insurrection within the meaning of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment” she then superseded the Amendment itself in as remarkable an act of judicial cowardice as I've ever seen. “After considering the arguments on both sides,” wrote Judge Wallace, “the Court is persuaded that ‘officers of the United States' did not include the PRESIDENT of the United States. It appears to the Court that for whatever reason the drafters of Section 3 did not intend to include a person who had only taken the Presidential Oath,” unquote. So she ordered him onto the Colorado primary ballot instead of saying “Yeah, I'm thinking they meant to include PRESIDENTS because otherwise having just survived the Civil War they decided to make sure Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee and Nathan Bedford Forrest could NOT run for anything EXCEPT President of the United States rather than showing some guts, Judge Wallace folded. The people who could DO something and they actually divide into two categories and two categories ONLY: Judges who are too effete to do anything and judges who are too scared to do anything. The Democrats are working overtime to indoctrinate our children, especially through the schools. They are doing whatever they can to keep parents from not only having a say in what is being taught to students, but from even knowing about it. We're seeing some states even adopt policies of not notifying parents about whether they are transgender, what sexually explicit books are in the school library or when they are going to teach sex education, which is practically pornographic and promoting LGBTQ ideology. Mallory Millett joins this episode of The Jeff Dornik Show to break it all down, bringing her expertise given her family background with the education system and the promotion of socialism. I highly recommend you go back and listen to my first episode with Mallory where she shared that her sister, Kate, is behind the normalizing of polygamy, bestiality, Satanism, pornography, promiscuity, witchcraft and pedophilia, as well as the hijacking of the schools, libraries and government. One of the driving forces is the inflation of the Nazis after World War II. The American history books will tell you that Nazi Germany was defeated at the end of the war… but the reality is that they regrouped and have been continually infiltrating and accomplishing their goal of world domination ever since. Even here in America, we absorbed a lot of Nazi scientists, medical doctors and other “experts” into our own government, starting government agencies stemming out of their developments. Thus, while the nation of Germany was conquered, the Nazis continued… even within our own government. As Ms Millett pointed out, during World War II we fought alongside Russia to oppose Nazi Germany. Now here we are today fighting alongside the Nazis in Ukraine to oppose Russia. It begins to make sense when you see the Nazi ties within our government and Ukraine's. Overall this was a fascinating conversation that needs to be listened to in its entirety. Mallory is a wealth of knowledge, and even shared some of her experiences of being a conservative within the entertainment industry in New York that was run by the Communists. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Mistakes in the moral mathematics of existential risk (Part 2: Ignoring background risk) - Reflective altruism, published by BrownHairedEevee on July 3, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is the second part of "Mistakes in the moral mathematics of existential risk", a series of blog posts by David Thorstad that aims to identify ways in which estimates of the value of reducing existential risk have been inflated. I've made this linkpost part of a sequence. In the decades to come, advanced bioweapons could threaten human existence. Although the probability of human extinction from bioweapons may be low, the expected value of reducing the risk could still be large, since such risks jeopardize the existence of all future generations. We provide an overview of biotechnological extinction risk, make some rough initial estimates for how severe the risks might be, and compare the cost-effectiveness of reducing these extinction-level risks with existing biosecurity work. We find that reducing human extinction risk can be more cost-effective than reducing smaller-scale risks, even when using conservative estimates. This suggests that the risks are not low enough to ignore and that more ought to be done to prevent the worst-case scenarios. Millett and Snyder-Beattie, “Existential risk and cost-effective biosecurity” 1. Introduction This is Part 2 of a series based on my paper “Mistakes in the moral mathematics of existential risk”. Part 1 introduced the series and discussed the first mistake: focusing on cumulative rather than per-unit risk. We saw how bringing the focus back to per-unit rather than cumulative risk was enough to change a claimed 'small' risk reduction of one millionth of one percent into an astronomically large reduction that would drive risk to almost one in a million per century. Today, I want to focus on a second mistake: ignoring background risk. The importance of modeling background risk is one way to interpret the main lesson of my paper and blog series “Existential risk pessimism and the time of perils.” Indeed, in Part 7 of that series, I suggested just this interpretation. It turns out that blogging is sometimes a good way to write a paper. Today, I want to expand my discussion in Part 7 of the existential risk pessimism series to clarify the second mistake (ignoring background risk) and to show how it interacts with the first mistake (focusing on cumulative risk) in a leading discussion of cost-effective biosecurity. Some elements of this discussion are lifted verbatim from my earlier post. In my defense, I remind my readers that I am lazy. 2. Snyder-Beattie and Millett on cost-effective biosecurity Andrew Snyder-Beattie holds a DPhil in Zoology from Oxford, and works as a Senior Program Officer at Open Philanthropy. Snyder-Beattie is widely considered to be among the very most influential voices on biosecurity within the effective altruist community. Piers Millett is a Senior Research Fellow at the Future of Humanity Institute. Millett holds advanced degrees in science policy, research methodology and international security, and has extensive industry experience in biosecurity. Millett and Snyder-Beattie's paper, “Existential risk and cost-effective biosecurity”, is among the most-cited papers on biosecurity written by effective altruists. The paper argues that even very small reductions in existential risks in the biosecurity sector (henceforth, 'biorisks') are cost-effective by standard metrics. Millett and Snyder-Beattie estimate the cost-effectiveness of an intervention as C/(NLR), where: C is the cost of the intervention. N is “the number of biothreats we expect to occur in 1 century”. L is “the number of life-years lost in such an event”. R is “the reduction in risk [in this century only] achieved by spending . C”. Millett and Snyder Be...

Today, our interdenominational Christian ministry serves the poor in primarily 17 countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Thanks to our faithful donors, we are able to provide food, housing, healthcare, education, fresh water, emergency relief, micro-enterprise solutions and much more. We are proud to have fed millions of people and provided more than 15.7 billion dollars in aid. Our faith inspires us to be an organization built on compassion, and motivated by love. Our mission is to bring relief to the poorest of the poor in the countries where we serve. We strive to reflect God's unconditional love. It's a sacrificial love that embraces all people regardless of race or religion. We believe that we can show His love by serving the “least of these” on this earth as Christ challenged us to do in Matthew 25. We pray that by God's grace, and with your support, we can continue to bring relief to the suffering and hope to the hopeless. -------------------------------------------------------- Disclaimer from ACU.
