But 16,000 EVs out of 1.2 million is just a drop in the bucket. Drive Electric Week kicks off today to accelerate EV adoption." Ryan Kawailani Ozawa @hawaii 'THE BUTTON' ARRIVES "After months of waiting, Tesla owners who wish to take part in the company's FSD Beta program could now formally request the advanced driver-assist system to be loaded into their vehicle. The release of the “Request FSD Beta” button comes before the rollout of FSD Beta 10.1, which is expected to be distributed to the company's testers over the weekend." says Teslarati.com: "Similar to the FSD Beta program that has initially been released to the company's first batch of testers last October, Tesla made it a serious point to highlight that safety must be paramount when using the advanced driver-assist system. This could be seen in the heavy emphasis on cautious driving that the company references in its recent update, as well as the use of Safety Scores to determine which drivers are eligible for the program. Tesla also made it clear that access to the advanced driver-assist system could be revoked at any time. " Read more: https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-fsd-beta-wide-release-notes "You can now request early access to Full Self-Driving Beta pending eligibility. To get started, tap ‘Controls'>' Autopilot'>Request Full Self-Driving Beta' and follow the instructions.” “Thank you for your interest in limited early access Full Self-Driving Beta! The Tesla team is analyzing your vehicle driving data and Safety Score to determine eligibility. You can view your Safety Score from the Tesla app at any time (version 4.1.0 or newer). If eligible, you will receive a software update as part of the limited early access,” Tesla wrote, adding that owners also have the option to opt-out of the FSD Beta test program. "The move delighted fans of CEO Elon Musk and Tesla, but it risks drawing the ire of federal vehicle safety authorities who are already investigating the automaker for possible safety defects in its driver-assistance systems." reported CNBC yesterday: "FSD Beta is an unfinished version of Tesla's premium driver-assistance software, FSD, which the company sells in the U.S. for $10,000 upfront, or $199 a month. The company previously made FSD Beta available to about 2,000 people, a mix of mostly employees and some customers, who test it out on public roads even though the software hasn't been debugged. Tesla's systems tabulate a drivers': “Predicted Collision Frequency, Forward Collision Warning per 1,000 Miles, Hard Braking, Aggressive Turning, Unsafe Following Time, and Forced Autopilot Disengagements" If you're a good boy or girl after 7 days, Tesla will review their decision and you may get access. Tesla develops in shorter processes, works closer with the best in the industry and takes more risk," Diess, a known admirer of the electric car pioneer led by Elon Musk, said. We already know the iX is in production and when we attended IAA Mobility 2021, we saw dozens and dozens of them in and around the venue." says InsideEVs: "BMW offers the iX in xDrive 40 and xDrive 50 guises, with either 240 kW (321 hp) or 385 kW (516 hp) respectively. The first has a 76.6 kWh battery pack (71 kWh usable capacity) and a claimed WLTP range of 425 km (264 miles), with the more powerful version featuring a 111.5 kWh pack (105.2 kWh usable); range is rated at 630 km (391 miles) WLTP. Pricing for the iX in Germany starts at €77,300 for the xDrive 40 model." We wrote that based on a report from WhichCar, who had spoken to BMW i4 Project Leader, David Ferrufino about the subject. According to the WhichCar article, Ferrufino claimed that “BMW electric vehicle range to remain capped at 600km” and that the charging infrastructure was more important. However, since then, we've talked to a spokesperson from BMW who tells us that there was never a 600 km range cap. We don't have the details of the original conversation, but allegedly the miscommunication was on BMW's part." writes BMWBlog: "From what we're told, the 600 km range – on WLTP and 300 miles on EPA – was the target number for both the BMW i4 and BMW iX during their development." The BMW Communications Team in Munich: “The BMW Group will not stop to further develop the electric range of their battery-electric vehicle portfolio. The BMW iX and BMW i4 are the first fully-electric models within the BMW portfolio to allow for a range of around 600km in WLTP and every day driving. Thereby they fulfill exactly the target range which had been set for their individual market segments. And the story doesn't end here: The BMW Group will continue pushing the boundaries of all aspects of electric driving. This applies in particular to further increasing ranges and higher charging speeds, depending on the individual model.” Read more: https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/09/25/update-bmw-says-no-electric-range-cap-on-its-future-electric-vehicles/ GERMAN RESEARCHERS CONVERTED A TESLA MODEL Y INTO A HYDROGEN CAR "On Wednesday, German Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek revealed an automotive Frankenstein creation: A Tesla Model Y that had been converted into a hydrogen vehicle that she called a “hyper hybrid." says futurism.com: "The actual “hyper hybrid” Tesla was meant to represent the concepts behind hydrogen fuel more so than to become a street-ready vehicle. The Carbon2Chem initiative, which aims to decarbonize the steel industry, designed the car to demonstrate new ways to save energy and recycle fuel". https://futurism.com/the-byte/converted-tesla-hydrogen-car DAIMLER TAKES A 33% STAKE IN AUTOMOTIVE CELLS COMPANY "Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler has taken a 33% equity stake in French battery manufacturer Automotive Cells Company (ACC) together with automaker Stellantis and French petroleum giant TotalEnergies. Each company will hold an equal 33% stake in ACC. " reports FutrueCar: "As Mercedes Benz ramps up the production of electric vehicles and transitions to becoming an electric-only automaker by the end of the decade, ACC will help the company to scale up development and production of next-generation high-performance battery cells and modules. ACC was founded in 2020 and aims to become the European leader of electric vehicle batteries. The investments from Dailmer, Stellantis and TotalEnergies bring together the additional expertise of three major companies, with highly complementary skills. Daimler said in July that more than 90% of future Mercedes-Benz electric models will be built with a common battery platform with standardized interfaces. Saturday Special – listen this weekend for Ian Johnston from Osprey Charging talking about the future of fueling up, and the innovative load-sharing solutions he's bringing to the UK. A couple of listener comments from yesterday's podcast...Chris in Texas says that I didn't mention the effective price of the Audio Q4 e-tron yesterday. Whilst it has a competitive price of $43,900 for the Q4 40, I forgot to mention the federal tax credit, which means I should be saying $36,400 after incentives. That's a good price for a 82kWh car, with 201hp and sub-8 second 0-60mph. EPA range possibly around 250 miles. And Michelle in Sacramento made a point about the Mercedes-Benz EQS. I talked about the starting price of $102,310 for the EQS 450+. That has a 107.8kWh pack with 487 miles of range on the WLTP. She pointed out the entry-level S Class is $109,800, so the EQS is almost 10 grand cheaper than the equivalent petrol. FORD PARTNERS WITH TESLA FOUNDER ON BATTERY RECYCLING & SUPPLY CHAIN "Ford Motor Co. announced on Wednesday plans to team up with a co-founder of Tesla Inc. on battery recycling in an effort to improve Ford's domestic battery supply chain for electric vehicles." reports the Detroit Free Press: "This new partnership with Redwood Materials, run by CEO J.B. Straubel, the first chief technology officer at Tesla, focuses on "localizing the complex supply chain network, creating recycling options for end-of-life vehicles, ramping lithium-ion recycling and increasing U.S. battery production," Ford said in a news release. Straubel, who worked at Tesla from 2004 to 2019, has built a reputation for creating a circular supply chain for batteries and helping partners in the electric-vehicle and clean-energy industries by providing technologies to remanufacture lithium-ion batteries. As part of this new collaboration, Ford also announced it has invested $50 million in Redwood." They add: "Ford announced in May plans to manufacture battery cells and arrays, which store energy for later use, through multiple BlueOvalSK battery plants in North America starting around 2025. BlueOvalSK is the U.S. joint venture between Ford and SK Innovation." "With Ford, Redwood Materials is looking to be more deeply integrated than just a recycling partner. Straubel's startup is working with the Detroit automaker to figure out plans for everything from helping to process scrap material, to finding new life for worn-down batteries with ample capacity remaining, to helping Ford create new batteries out of salvaged lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper." says The Verge: "the overarching goal is one that Straubel has talked about frequently since founding Redwood Materials. The idea is to create a “circular” or “closed loop” system where the stuff that makes up lithium-ion batteries gets recycled and reused, which could theoretically drive down the cost of an EV's battery while reducing the automaker's reliance on imported materials and (one day) mining." JB was employee #5 at Tesla, he is as central to their success story as anyone else, and it's not surprising Ford want to invest. The facility is expected to begin rolling out vehicles by 2023. Foxconn had previously reported plans to begin building factories in both Thailand and the U.S. next year." says The Verge: "The initial production capacity of the Thailand facility will be around 50,000 units, which Foxconn says will increase three-fold by 2030. The Thailand plant officially marks Foxconn as an automaker in its own right, but the company is also working with EV maker Fisker on a U.S. manufacturing plant, which should also start production in 2023. The two companies signed a joint agreement, called Project PEAR," Read more: https://techcrunch.com/2021/09/21/foxconn-says-thailand-ev-factory-will-begin-producing-50000-units-by-2023/ LUCID WILL BUILD 520 AIR DREAM EDITIONS "The EPA recently released its official range figures for the limited Dream Edition and as the company expected, its 520 miles (836 kilometers) is the best range ever tested by the EPA, besting the Tesla Model S Long Range by over 100 miles (160 kilometers)" writes MotorIllustrated: "To commemorate this achievement, the company decided to increase production of the fully reserved Dream Edition up to 520 units, which means a number of customers that were previously on the waiting list will be able to buy the car after all. The Lucid Air Dream Edition can be ordered in two trims, the Dream Edition R, which provides the 520 mile (836 kilometer) range and delivers 933 horsepower, enough to power the large sedan to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.7 seconds." The P version has 1,111 HP but sacrifices 49 miles of range. The publication says drivers must rely on charging infrastructure if they plan to drive longer distances." reports InsideEVs: "While nearly 400 miles of range is a pretty solid estimate for an EV produced today, it's interesting that BMW would state that it has no intention of striving for more range. WhichCar writes that BMW i4 project leader David Ferrufino said the automaker won't target a 1,000-kilometer driving range." He said: "One thousand kilometres of range is not a target we have with our fully-electric cars. We are aiming for 600 kilometres [of driving range] for our fully-electric cars, and 100 kilometres with our plug-in hybrids in everyday driving. For example, we don't think a range of 600 kilometres will be suitable for a BMW i3 as an urban car, but when it comes to the BMW iX or i4, we think that around 600 kilometres is a very customer-friendly solution." COLORADO EV INCENTIVES "Excel Energy's new roster of electric vehicle rebates are winning praise from environmental groups, with Colorado's dominant utility expanding incentives to include used vehicles, speeding up the all-important charging network and working with landlords to install apartment chargers." "Xcel will credit $50 a year on your bill if you agree to do most of your charging during off-peak times they have set aside. They say this allows them to plan demands on the power grid, and also allows you to use more renewable energy in the evening, instead of peak power that may be drawing on coal-fired power plants. If you need to charge at home outside your chosen time, you can override the system." “Used was a big win for us,” said Xcel electric vehicle program director Alisa Sobczak, who was showcasing Xcel's new incentives at a vehicle and charging station showcase set up for last weekend's Denver Auto Show. “For instance, in the Denver Metro area, a family of four with household income under $85,000 qualifies,” for the rebates, Sobczak said. “We tried to make as many people eligible as possible, because we want everybody to have the opportunity to drive electric. So we've got $5,500 off a new EV purchase or lease, and $3,000 off of used." "The Xcel-offered rebates for new or used EV purchases and leases are income-qualified on a sliding scale, to target the greatest amount of help to those with the least resources for a big purchase. The price tag for the car can't go over $50,000, eliminating many models of Tesla or the high-end pickup trucks arriving this year." https://coloradosun.com/2021/09/21/new-xcel-electric-vehicle-charging-rebates CONSUMER REPORTS HATE TESLA'S YOKE "Testers at Consumer Reports recently got their hands on the Tesla Model S steering yoke, and first impressions aren't good. The publication, which purchases all of its test vehicles, recently received a new Model S equipped with the yoke which, in addition to its unusual shape, replaces conventional controls for the turn signals, windshield wipers, and horn with touch-sensitive buttons." writes Green Car Reports: "Over the course of a week, ten Consumer Reports testers reported numerous issues with the yolk. It slipped out of drivers' hands, doesn't allow for hand-over-hand shuffling when maneuvering in tight spaces, and drivers had trouble figuring out which button to press to activate the turn signals." Jake Fisher, senior director of Consumer Reports' Auto Test Center: "Swerving to avoid road debris or a stopped vehicle may be more difficult. I am concerned if I would be able to control the vehicle well in an emergency situation." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1133605_tesla-model-s-steering-yoke-is-a-pain-and-possible-safety-concern-says-consumer-reports 2022 BMW I3: ELECTRIC 3 SERIES SPIED "The 2022 BMW i3 has been caught by an amateur photographer in China. Images have been posted to website Sohu showing the first fully-electric 3 Series, with the new BMW expected to slot in below the i4 – but believed to instead share a similar powertrain to the iX3 SUV." says Whichcar.com.au: "Rumours suggest the new model will offer an entry-level variant initially – possibly called the i3 eDrive30 – with a single electric motor sending 210kW and 400Nm to the rear wheels. it's more likely the i3 shares the larger 84kWh battery pack with its i4 sibling, meaning the sedan should easily reach 600km of driving range on a single charge" https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/2022-bmw-i3-electric-3-series-spied ELECTRAMECCANICA TO BEGIN CUSTOMER DELIVERIES "ElectraMeccanica Vehicles will begin customer deliveries of its single-occupant, three-wheeled, electric vehicle, the SOLO. The company will officially begin delivering keys to customers at a special launch event scheduled for 4 October in Los Angeles with a select group of early reservation holders along with the company's first fleet owners." reports Green Car Congress: "The SOLO is a purpose-built, three-wheeled, all-electric solution for the urban environment. Engineered for a single occupant. The SOLO features front and rear crumple zones, side impact protection, roll bar, torque-limiting control, as well as power steering, power brakes, air conditioning and a Bluetooth entertainment system. The price hikes were not trivial. Following our conversation and excitement surrounding the remake of the cult classic film C’etait Un Rendezvous, the WhichCar Weekly team assembles to review the Grand Rendezvous homage now that it’s out in the open. Did director Claude Lelouche expertly recreate the magic of the original? Was the use of an actual Ferrari this time round adding to the intensity? Was Monaco an even more stunning backdrop to this feat of world class driving than Paris? You’ll have click play and listen in to find out. Next up we turn the chat to another brand-funded car story and Aston Martin’s three part promo to welcome its four-door Rapide. If you wanted an example of one of the worst and cripplingly unwatchable car flicks to ever muddy your screens, look no further. Andy, Dan and returning WhichCar editor Tim pick apart this automotive abomination with all the mercy of a pride of hungry lions. Frankly it deserved nothing less. But from just about the most shockingly bad car films, Tim introduces one of the very best car docos to have dropped in decades - and it’s about an Australian icon. Brock - Over the Top looks at the life of one of Australia’s most loved but controversial motorsport figures, and the boys are suitably impressed. Out next month, the WCW team highlight what makes this story brilliant - no spoiler alert necessary.
With many Australians spending more time at home lately, the TV might have spent a bit more time switched on, so the WhichCar weekly team thought it was a great time revisit the topic of the best moving images of cars. Not just the best films, the greatest stories, or most memorable performances, but all the best vehicles captured in film moments from a simple Youtube clip to Oscar-worthy cinema. Joining the chat this week, staff videographer (and petrol head) Sean makes his WCW debut, offering an expert’s insight into the process of conceiving, planning and executing great car films. From the creative process, through the technicalities, we look at all the challenges and tricks to get a car feature from inside your head onto the screen. Later, the talk turns to other great car films, not just those produced by the WhichCar team, possibly including the imminent Le Grand Rendez-vous - an homage to the 1976 cult short film C’etait un Rendez-vous. Due for release on June 13, will this ‘remake’, complete with race ace Charles Leclerc and a Ferrari SF90 Stradale successfully create the same raw magic that original conjured some 40 years later? Somewhat inevitably, the conversation evolves into our favourite car clips and cinema through the ages. Sean reveals one of his main film inspirations, Andy makes a nostalgic nod to one of his most familiar race tracks and Dan, unsurprisingly, offers up another contentious series of films.
The WhichCar Weekly team virtually reassembles with returning guest Chris along with the decision that, as far as probability is concerned, the Motor magazine digital editor is now a regular. Following a recent article by Motor, Andy, Chris and Dan enter another round of ‘WhichCar would you buy with your own cash’ this time adding in a new level of complexity. The trio thrash out their decisions of what to put in the garage if it had to be your only car, along with the notable selections from other members of the WhichCar motoring team. Dan also defends his entry for the up to $40,000 category and offers an alternative because it was stupid. Andy has a rare moment of sensibility but in some of his new-car wish-list choices, and Chris proves that he is very much the driving enthusiast that’s willing to sacrifice comfort and practicality for his passion. Later, the team turns the conversation to their own personal cars. With covid restrictions preventing many day-to-day functions of road testing and press car movements, the team has been spending more time in their respective machines. Find out what the WCW team drive when they don’t have a major manufacturer to sponge off and what the return to some older models means to people who are more than accustomed to driving new cars week-in, week-out.
On this week’s WhichCar Weekly episode, WhichCar senior journalist Daniel Gardner welcomes Mark Allen for a peek behind Jeep's global design centre doors in Detroit. With more than a quarter of a century with FCA, Chrysler and Jeep in his pencil, the head of design at Jeep offers fascinating insight into the way seven-slot grille models have evolved. The two petrolheads delve into decades of experience and find out Mark’s proudest moments, where Jeep design will go from here and the things he’d go back and have another crack at. And the master designer reveals the biggest challenges when it comes to creating the next generation of one of the world’s most celebrated and recognisable models. Oh, and Dan couldn’t resist dropping in a question about that crash too.
Welcome to the latest episode of WhichCar weekly where regulars Daniel Gardner (WhichCar Senior Journalist) and Scott Newman (MOTOR Associate Editor) are joined by WhichCar Senior Writer and gaming correspondent Tony O'Kane and WhichCar Editor Tim Robson to discuss the world of eSports. What is it, how does it work and is it the future of motorsport? All these questions and more are answered. In today’s increasingly connected world, it is easier than ever to stay in control while behind the wheel. An impressive array of new automotive technologies can aid the driving process and provide a more seamless and comfortable ride. As technology advances at breakneck speed, it can be challenging to stay on top of the latest gadgets and services. Here are three auto technologies that you can employ to help you to drive better. Dash Cams A dash cam is a compact camera that records footage on the road. According to Intact Insurance, dash cam footage can prove to be invaluable in an insurance dispute. Merely knowing that this video evidence exists encourages people to driver safer. Some of the more advanced dash cams are equipped with additional tools that aid in the driving experience. For example, dual-camera units record what is happening on the road and in the interior of the vehicle. This is especially helpful to parents of teen drivers looking to ensure that their child is practicing safe driving habits. Smartphone Apps According to The Law Office of William W. Hurst, major insurance companies have safe driving programs that track driving habits through smartphone apps. By understanding your driving habits, you can glean information designed to help you to become a better driver. Not only can this potentially save you a significant amount of money on your vehicle insurance premiums, but it can also equip you with the data that you need to improve your skills on the road. Some apps can even monitor the acceleration and braking of the vehicle to maximize fuel efficiency. Active Safety Features According to WhichCar, today’s modern vehicles are equipped with a bevy of active safety features designed to keep you safe on the road with little effort on your part. A few of these features include the blind spot monitoring system, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, cross traffic alert and more. Many of these features rely on sensors embedded in the vehicle to deliver crucial information to the driver and even possibly alert them prior to a potentially dangerous situation. Working together, these features take a lot of the guesswork out of driving. It is not possible to eliminate all the dangers you will encounter on the road. However, with the right technologies in place, you can improve your driving experience and deliver a safe ride. You owe it to yourself and your passengers to check out these features to make sure the ride goes as smoothly as possible.
Scott says Dan’s sickness was from driving a Ford Mustang EcoBoost and liking it, but either way he is back to chat to the regular boys about all the hot topics while he was feeling sorry for himself in bed. Kicking off the chat this week, we discuss Labor’s plan to boost electric vehicle sales to a half of all new cars by 2030 (1:45) and it’s even more ambitious strategy to resurrect Australian car manufacturing (10:45). Flight of fancy, realistic goal or is there simply an election looming? Then Scott and Dan gaze silently at Andy as he takes us through Mercedes’ top secret holy halls where the German car maker houses all of its most valuable, rare and desirable vehicles throughout the company’s storied history (13:50). And rounding out the conversation, Dan reviews his time in the most significant vehicle in Lamborghini’s history – the Urus. Can an SUV ever truly carry the Raging Bull badge on its nose and is there anything that makes its first high-rider since the LM002 a worth supercar (23:50)? If you’re on the run or in the car, find the WhichCar Weekly podcast on iTunes or Podbean and follow the WhichCar team on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - @whichcarau.

Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 21st June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. VOLVO'S NEW HYBRID S60 HYBRID TO BE MADE IN U.S. The first major auto maker to publicly say they would electrify their entire range was Volvo, and now they've revealed one of those models to drive the company into an electric future. If you're in the market for a BMW 3-series, hold on to our wallet and check out the Volvo first. The new S60, which US listeners would call a mid-size Sedan or compact executive, is being built at their first plant in North American in South Carolina. It's a plant which will never see a diesel engine because they've been phased out by Volvo. In fact it was double bubble because they launched the new car and also inaugurated the factory. So what can we expect from a US built hybrid? There are four engine choices but two of them are electrified. The engines are gas (aka petrol) and include PHEV power. You can choose a Plug In T6 Twin Engine or the 400hp Plug In T8 Twin Engine AWD PHEV. We recently told you about the Polestar option too which, which sprinkles Swedish performance fairy dust over your car, which beefed up brakes, suspension and tuning. As for safety, there's Autobraking for collision avoidance with pedestrians or an elk on Swedish roads, Run-off Road Mitigation and Oncoming Lane Mitigation. Plus Volvo have their Pilot Assist which keeps you at Level 2 autonomous driving, so a bit steery and a bit brake-y, but not too much. It can do 28 miles of pure EV range. Can I add...my goodness it looks good. Prices start at $41,295 for anything with a battery and Volvo are pushing their Care By Volvo subscription plans, over two years with 24/7 customer care and breakdown assistance, plus all your maintenance and the bits which wear out like wipers and brakes. Of course if it's really a turnkey solution you'd need insurance, and that's sorted too, with Liberty Mutual. PORSCHE BUY INTO RIMAC "Porsche AG is taking a 10% stake in Rimac Automobili, the Croatian hypercar and electric vehicle components company behind the world’s fastest electric car" according to TechCrunch. It's interesting this is happening since the Rimac C_Two is being designed with specs to make your eyes water and most big legacy makers have either been scrating their heads about how Rimac are doing it, or plain old dismissing the outrageous specs of 1,914hp and 0-60mph in 1.85sec, as not possible with an electric car. According to TechCrunch: "the company, which was founded by Mate Rimac in 2009, also engineers and manufactures high-performance electric vehicle powertrain systems and battery systems. The company has already worked with Renault, Jaguar, and Aston Martin. The company’s tech was even used in the E-Type Zero Jaguar driven by Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex at their wedding last month." Do you think it means things were going OK with Taycan, formerly the Mission-E, but they wanted to buy into more knowledge and expertise? TopGear says: "CEO and namesake Mate Rimac, who remains the majority shareholder, says entering into this partnership with Porsche “is an important step in [Rimac’s] strategy to become a leading EV technology supplier to global OEMs”. Porsche's Lutz Meschke said: "We feel that Rimac's ideas and approaches are extremely promising, which is why we hope to enter into close collaboration with the company in the form of a development partnership" MEANWHILE FORD SAYS BATTERY TECHNOLOGY ISN'T READY I hate to juxtapose that story of performance EVs to this one, but here goes. You know how Tesla announced the Semi Truck specs, and then the head of Daimler Trucks said they've be buying two, one to test and one to take apart, because the technology to make one doesn't exist? And that the same rules of chemistry applied in Fremont to Germany? Well now Ford are having their say. "The boss of Ford Performance in Europe told Whichcar.com.au that battery technology isn’t yet suitable for sports car duty" Leo Roeks, European director of Ford Performance: “I have to stay very high-level and very neutral, as I don’t want to make any hints about future products. We need to keep looking at the technology at this point in time. The expectation that we have on performance vehicles right now, it’s very difficult to fulfil that with a fully-electric vehicle. If we look at the battery at the moment, you can have an energy or a power battery – the energy battery is kind of like a big water tank, but it’s got a small pipe. You can leave the tap running for a fairly long time, not a lot of water comes out of it, but it takes ages to get the tank empty. Then again, it also takes a long time to fill it up. A power battery is like a very small tank of water with big pipes, which is relatively easy to drain but also very easy to fill it. I’m looking for something in between. At the moment, that technology is not yet there – that’s something we need to look at. The question is: how close we can get between power and energy.” GERMANY COULD WIN THE BATTLE FOR EUROPEAN GIGAFACTORY LOCATION Elon Tweets! "“Germany is a leading choice for Europe. Perhaps on the German-French border makes sense, near the Benelux countries.” Investopedia reports: "[One] European location where Tesla has ongoing operations is in Pruem, Germany, about 20 miles from the Belgian border and around 60 miles from France. It hosts the Grohmann Engineering division of Tesla, which specializes in automated manufacturing systems for battery-manufacturing facilities. In recent times, Grohmann has successfully built a production line for Tesla’s U.S. battery factory in Reno, Nevada, which is aimed at supporting the production of its newest mass-market Model 3 car." A reminder of what Elon has said at both the recent Shareholder meeting and on the Q1 2018 earnings Call, all future Gigafactories will produce batteries and assemble cars. All continents will need a Gigafactory soon, to produce cars at lower costs, but the goal is to have 12. WHY YOUR NEXT UBER COULD BE AN EV Uber told us: "We’re excited to launch the EV Champions Initiative, a pilot program for driver-partners to deliver at least 5 million EV rides over the next year. This program kicks off today in seven cities — Austin, Los Angeles, Montreal, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle — in partnership with leading electric vehicle (EV) adoption experts. This program builds off the success of existing pilots in Pittsburgh and Portland and we’re proud to team up with experts who have decades of experience in EV adoption. Together, we hope to better equip both plug-in electric and full battery electric vehicle drivers for success. Adam Gromis, Uber’s global lead on sustainability and environmental impact: "What we’ve learned from drivers is that they love not paying for gas and giving their riders a quiet, smooth, efficient, high-tech ride. But any EV driver is trying to operate this technology in a world that’s not built for them.” "Starting today, riders will get a push notification alerting them when they’re matched with an EV driver. But passengers won’t be able to choose to ride in an EV" says curbed.com: "Currently, Uber offers the option for riders to choose an electric vehicle in some European cities (where it’s called Uber Green), but this is only offered in cities which already have the number of EVs and density of charging infrastructure to support the feature." PORTABLE BATTERY PACKS TO RESCUE YOU FROM FLAT BATTERY "A recently developed totally portable Electric Vehicle (EV) recharge system designed to enable a stranded EV driver who has a depleted high voltage battery to receive a charge at roadside for a short period of time and thus allowing the EV "self-recover" from a roadside breakdown flat battery incident" reports ElectricVehicle Research.com: " a roadside attending rescue patrol can simply plug in the battery EV, wait for around 10-15 minutes and effectively the EV can then drive off to the nearest fixed location EV charge station. The great feature of the Mobile Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (MEVSE) design is in the capability of the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) 48 volt battery pack to be re-charged from the standard rescue vehicle on-board existing 12 volt charging system." https://www.electricvehiclesresearch.com/articles/14549/mobile-ev-charger-that-self-charges-as-recovery-vehicle-is-driving SOLAREDGE UNVEILS EV CHARGING STATION AT INTERSOLAR EUROPE SolarEdge Technologies is unveiling its residential electric vehicle [EV] charging station this week at Intersolar Europe, in Munich. Following the recent debut of its EV-charging, single-phase inverter, SolarEdge will now also provide a standalone EV charger. Check out PV Magazine for more details. They say: "The new EV charger will be integrated into SolarEdge’s smart energy suite, to support increased energy independence. With the EV charger offering management in SolarEdge’s monitoring platform, EV charging can be easily controlled and programmed." SP GROUP TO BUILD SINGAPORE'S LARGEST PUBLIC EV CHARGING NETWORK SP Group (SP) has today announced its plans to build Singapore's largest public Electric Vehicle (EV) charging network, in its bid to accelerate EV adoption in Singapore" as per SGCarMart: "By 2020, SP will build 500 charging points islandwide, located at shopping malls, residential areas, business parks and industrial sites, accessible by all members of the public. These charging points will also be compatible with all EV models. The first batch of 30 charging points will be in operation by the end of 2018. The islandwide network will be fully compliant with Singapore's national charging standards and comprise both AC and DC chargers, with power ratings ranging from 22kW to 50kW." Access will be via an app to initiate a charge and receive updates on its status, as well as to make payment. COMMUNITY New followers. Hope to speak to Phil Roberts from Electric Future tomorrow.
