JB Straubel was Elon Musk's battery guy. Now he's trying to turn what some see as trash into power for the electric vehicle revolution. Straubel was there at the earliest days of Tesla, and in his 15 years with the electric vehicle company, he played an integral role: he developed the battery pack used in the first Tesla vehicle, was the company's Chief Technology Officer, and now sits on the board of directors. But his day job is running the battery-recycling startup Redwood Materials, and he envisions a future where recycled batteries power our cars, cell phones and power tools. So could companies like his one day replace the oil giants who fueled the last century? Why does he think humans have room to work harder? And can the Tesla board manage Musk as he takes on a growing role in U.S. politics, including advising the Trump administration? Batteries are a critical part of the transition away from fossil fuels. From electric vehicles to grid scale storage for wind and solar, demand for batteries is expected to grow 500% by 2030. In order to meet that demand, we're going to need a lot more batteries. And while companies like JB Straubel's Redwood Materials are building capacity for recycling, for now that means a lot more mining. With the battery supply chain only growing more critical as the electric vehicle market matures, we're revisiting this critical episode from last summer exploring how to build a battery supply chain that meets demand while reducing harm. The lithium-ion battery business is taking off, and the battery recycling business is close behind. Financiers are pouring over a billion dollars into recycling companies like Redwood Materials, Ascend Elements, and Li-Cycle. But success depends on a steady supply of used batteries, and with batteries lasting longer than expected — and the battery market still in its infancy — there just aren't enough dying batteries to go around. As a result, a significant portion of recyclers' feedstock is coming from manufacturer scrap, i.e. the waste that companies like SK On and Panasonic don't turn into cells at the factory. But these battery makers are incentivized to minimize waste, which raises big questions about whether recyclers will be able to get enough used batteries to sustainably feed their operations. So which technologies and business models will succeed in this chapter of the battery industry? In this episode, Shayle talks to Dan Steingart, chair of the earth and environmental engineering department at Columbia University. (Steingart's lab gets funding from battery manufacturer Northvolt.) Shayle and Dan cover topics like: The steps in nickel-manganese-cobalt battery recycling and what Dan calls “zombie lithium” The differences between pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy Dan's bet on solvent extraction as an under-appreciated technology Redwood Materials' focus on winning the feedstock battle Ascend Elements' hydro-to-cathode technology Li-Cycle's focus on making inputs for cathode manufacturers How these recyclers want to compete downstream by producing cathode precursor and cathode material Why Dan is surprisingly bearish on direct recycling for lithium-iron-phosphate Recommended Resources: Nature Sustainability: Examining different recycling processes for lithium-ion batteries Latitude Media: What's so hard about building a circular battery economy?

Demand for lithium-ion batteries is estimated to grow 500% in the next 10 years. With such an intense surge on the horizon, there is a need to ramp up the supply chain quickly and sustainably to support this growth. . Enter Redwood Materials. Founded by JB Straubel, co-founder and former CTO of Tesla, Redwood is transforming the EV battery supply chain by producing anode copper foil and cathode active materials in the US at scale for the first time—and using an increasing amount of recycled content to build those components. . Currently, EV battery materials move 50,000+ miles before they reach a battery cell factory. By offering large-scale sources of domestic anode and cathode materials produced from an increasing number of recycled batteries that directly go back to U.S. cell manufacturers, Redwood is creating a closed-loop, domestic supply chain for lithium-ion batteries. . We sat down with Alexis Georgeson, VP Government Relations & Communications, to discuss Redwood Materials circular supply chain and how the company is recycling, refining, and remanufacturing battery materials for a clean energy future. . We'd love to hear from you. Share your comments, questions and ideas for future topics and guests to podcast@sae.org. VW ID.4 GETTING PLUG & CHARGE, BIDIRECTIONAL CHARGING THIS SUMMER - VW Group CEO Herbert Diess hosted an AMA session yesterday on Reddit and got asked more than 1,000 questions. - While he couldn't possibly answer all of them, he did offer some long-awaited updates for VW ID.4 owners, especially those in the United States. As it turns out, an important software update the automaker has promised last year is finally arriving this summer. - "We will have a major OTA update for the ID.4 coming this summer, which will add features like Plug & Charge and Auto Hold, as well as a higher capacity onboard charge capability." - The update will arrive in Vehicle to Home (V2H) form, which means ID.4 owners will be able to power their appliances from the car or the entire house in case of a blackout. Diess stopped short of offering specific details, so it will be interesting to see how VW compares to the Hyundai E-GMP platform output of 2-4 kW. - "Bidirectional charging will be available this year for all ID. Models with 77 kWh battery, also via OTA update. In the beginning we will only offer Vehicle-to-home. This means you can run your dishwasher with electricity from abroad." Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/568191/vw-id4-plugcharge-bidirectional-charging/ VOLKSWAGEN SETS EYES ON $22K EV - The 63-year old CEO also talked about simplifying the company structure and adopting a Tesla-like working style in which different engineering teams work together in the company. “Volkswagen will remain a multi-brand mobility company working worldwide and being present in many segments. To reduce complexity we are focusing on platforms, even more in the future,” Diess said. Volkswagen is banking on its next-generation mechatronics platform Scalable Systems Platform, or SSP, betting on CARIAD for its software needs and aiming to lower battery costs by up to 50% with a unified cells approach. “But yes, in some segments we are still too complex in our product offering. We are making good progress in reducing complexity.” Original Source : https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/02/25680772/volkswagen-sets-eyes-on-22k-ev-as-it-looks-to-rival-tesla-ceo-says-focus-on-simplifying-company-stru VOLKSWAGEN ELECTRIC CARS TO POWER HOMES BY END 2022: DIESS - Volkswagen first introduced a 22kW bidirectional DC charging station in 2020, which it deployed across 20 sites for testing. It is also dependent on regulatory approval by authorities and utility operators; V2H and V2G (vehicle-to-grid)-capable Nissan Leafs have been deployed in Japan where concerns about energy security amid typhoons, cyclones and nuclear disasters have driven its approval, but its use is still sparse on a global scale. The capability differs from “vehicle-to-load” introduced by Hyundai and Kia in the Ioniq 5 and EV6, enabling owners to plug directly to the vehicle's lithium-ion battery to power devices like kettles and lights when camping, or recharge batteries in electric bikes and power tools for example. - Diess said that another software upgrade would enable “plug and charge” in the ID.4 my mid-2022, as well as faster charging and “autohold” which maintains the pressure applied in braking to make stopping and starting in traffic a more pleasant experience. “We will have a major OTA update for the ID.4 coming this summer, which will add features like Plug&Charge and AutoHold, as well as a higher capacity onboard charge capability,” he wrote. Original Source : https://thedriven.io/2022/02/17/volkswagen-electric-cars-to-power-homes-by-end-2022-diess/ VW CEO HINTS AT ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK AND SEDANS DURING REDDIT AMA | CARSCOOPS - Diess said the most emotional vehicle in Volkswagen's history is “definitely the micro bus,” so his “first priority” was creating the ID.Buzz which will be unveiled next month. However, he admitted “many other emotional cars are possible on our scalable MEB platform.” - Diess reiterated the company is “working on electric cars around 20k euros for entry segments.” Of course, this isn't really news as Volkswagen unveiled the ID.Life concept at the 2021 Munich Motor Show and noted it “provides a preview of an ID. model in the small car segment that we will be launching in 2025, priced at around 20,000 euros.” Original Source : https://www.carscoops.com/2022/02/vw-group-ceo-hints-at-electric-sedans-and-a-pickup-truck-during-reddit-ama/ - On Lidar, Diess surprisingly took a different tack than his friend, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is adamant that Robotaxis can be made from only vision systems. - Diess remarked that Lidar, or more specifically redundant perception, was integral to getting to Level 3 autonomy, saying: “Lidar technology is still expensive, but todays the only way to offer redundant perception to the 360 camera systems which are a must. Safety is really crucial in autonomous driving. For level 3 driving you need redundant perception.” - He clarified that Level 3 autonomy “requires” redundant Lidar perception. Volkswagen has partnered with MobileEye for its Lidar systems, which have been dropping in price. “Yes, definitely level 3 requires redundant Lidar perception.” - As for the when, Diess was a little less specific than Tesla's “this year” timespan. “autonomous driving is the biggest gamechanger for the automotive industry. we will be able to drive our customers safe and comfortably. This will be a gradual process from taking over responsibility on open highways in good weather conditions getting to more complex environments and weather situations worldwide. So this will be a long process of competition for a long period to come. We are building up competencies to become a serious competitor in this race.” Original Source : https://electrek.co/2022/02/16/vw-ceo-diess-disagrees-with-tesla-ceo-elon-musk-saying-l3-autonomy-requires-lidar-plus-vw-ev-pickup-summer-ota-and-more/ FORD TO RELEASE ELECTRIC PUMA - ELECTRIVE.COM - Ford plans an all-electric version of its Puma small car slated for launch in the 2025 model year. The electric Puma will adopt the drive technology from the electric version of the upcoming Ford Transit Courier. - According to the Australian portal Drive, Ford wants to launch the electric Transit Courier in 2024. With the introduction of the 2025 model year (which usually takes place in the second half of the previous year), the electric Puma would follow shortly afterwards. - The report does not mention possible technical data on the drive for the panel van and the Puma. However, the information that Drive claims to have seen indicates that the electric Puma will not be a new generation of the small SUV but an electric version of the familiar model – using the same internal codename. - Apart from the name, the SUV no longer has anything to do with Ford's small sports coupe in 1997. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/02/17/ford-to-release-electric-puma/ FORD, VOLVO JOIN REDWOOD MATERIALS BATTERY RECYCLING PROGRAM - Redwood Materials, the startup founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel, is launching an electric vehicle battery recycling program in California with Ford and Volvo as inaugural partners as pressure mounts to source materials for EVs. - The basic plan is that Redwood Materials will work with dealers and dismantlers in California to recover end-of-life battery packs in hybrid and electric vehicles. Straubel said the program will be free for those turning in vehicle batteries. The cost of retrieving, properly packaging and then transporting the batteries back to Redwood's recycling facility in northern Nevada will be shared by the startup along with partners Volvo and Ford. Redwood will accept all lithium-ion and nickel metal hydride batteries in the state, regardless of the make or model of the vehicle. - Redwood has launched a portal that scrapyards and dealers can use to organize the retrieval of the batteries. - Earlier this year, existing partner Panasonic announced that battery cells made at the Gigafactory it operates with Tesla will use more recycled materials by the end of 2022 as part of an expanded relationship with Redwood Materials. Pete Bigelow, Senior Reporter, covering self-driving tech and the future of mobility, Automotive News joined Grayson Brulte on The Road To Autonomy Podcast to discuss Ford and the electrification of an iconic brand. The conversation begins with Grayson and Pete discussing the incredible performance of Ford under CEO Jim Farley in the public markets. As Ford electrifies their brand, the company has implemented a savvy strategy built around iconic Ford brands: F-150 and Mustang. As car companies such as Ford begin to electrify their lineup of vehicles, it's important not to lose sight of the circular economy. Ford clearly understands the positive impact that the circular economy will have on the EV supply chain and the environment as Ford is an investor in Redwood Materials (a battery recycling startup).Everybody suddenly sees the writing on the wall that the chip shortage of 2020 to 2023 is going to quickly turn into the battery supply shortage of 2024 to 2028. – Pete BigelowWhile the supply chain will pose long-term challenges for automakers, the model of selling vehicles to consumers is changing. Consumers are demanding a direct-to-consumer model and shying away from dealers due to the overall buying experience. The dealership networks of today are not well set up to sell electric vehicles. They are an obstacle in a lot of ways. They are not incentivized to sell electric vehicles. It's a whole different thing where you are selling an ecosystem and you need to answer questions about utility bills and getting a charger installed in your home. – Pete BigelowAs certain car dealers look to charge more for a vehicle due to demand, it ends up having a negative long-term effect on the automaker's brand, not the dealer. It's important for car companies to take a stand and protect their brands. Ford is doing this by not allowing dealers to mark up the vehicle due to demand.Startups such as Rivian (which Ford owns 12%) do not have dealer networks. Does this create an inherent competitive advantage? Grayson and Pete discuss the pros and cons of the Rivian brand and the appeal of outdoor (Patagonia, The North Face) brands. Grayson raises the question: Does Rivian's van business devalue the brand's overall value?Competition in the electric van market is heating up with GM's Brightdrop, Stellantis' Ram ProMaster, and Ford's E-Transit vans coming online in the near future. Could these vans become autonomous in the future?Wrapping up the conversation, Grayson and Pete discuss the airport opportunity for autonomous vehicles and why the future of autonomy might not be shared.Recorded on Monday, January 17, 2021.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Welcome to a new Patreon Producer JAMES FEJEDELEM APPLE CAR RUMORS INSPIRE KOREAN BATTERY MANUFACTURERS TO FORM TASK FORCE - a report published on Wednesday by 9 to 5 Mac, which claims that South Korean battery manufacturers have formed an Apple Car task force. The idea of a multicorporation task force being formed to court Apple's business is gutsy, but it may not be without its merits. - Apple has had visits with several battery suppliers in the last month, presumably with the goal of locking down a supplier for a pack of its own design. - Apple is rumored to be looking to South Korea for a number of its components, but it's not clear how many of those will be off-the-shelf, and how many will be custom. (Nasdaq: EVGO) family since mid-2021, today announced that its platform has reached over two million registered users globally. - comes on the heels of the platform surpassing over one million new app downloads over the course of 2021, - In 2021, PlugShare drivers provided over 1.3 million ratings of their charging experiences. This time, the BMW i Ventures investment arm focused on the charging infrastructure, an area that was criticized by the BMW Group CEO, Oliver Zipse not long ago. The company invested in HeyCharge, a German start-up that aims to open access to private charging locations for its users. - Usually, in order to start using an EV charger, you'll need an app or an RFID card, as well as an internet connection. However, most subterranean garages lack an internet access point or the ability to install such devices at this time. - HeyCharge's patent-pending technology, removes the requirement for an on-site internet connection by allowing the app and chargers to interact directly over bluetooth with the HeyCharge App or SDK. This increases system availability while reducing delay between the phone and the charger. Total costs in buildings can be lowered by up to 80% when combined with HeyCharge's simple and effective hardware component, Access Point. The collaboration will enable more emission-free transportation and support EV adoption as EV charging infrastructure is enhanced within some of America's most popular national parks. - Under the collaboration between Rivian and Adopt a Charger, Rivian will pay for the equipment and fund 10 years of operation and maintenance by the two organizations. Adopt a Charger, which celebrated its tenth anniversary last year, has installed over 400 chargers in 10 states, including in 26 California state parks and at major cultural institutions such as the Getty Center. As the emerging EV industry grapples with securing supplies of the raw materials required to power the electric vehicles they plan to bring to market in the next few years, they may just find that part of the solution is resolving an end-of-life problem that will demand their attention in the years to come - how to dispose of millions of worn-out EV batteries. The good news is that grappling with one of the problems may actually solve both.
During this episode, the 2022 Subaru Ascent Onyx SUV is reviewed; How your vehicle's make and model impacts your auto insurance premiums; and automakers take steps to recycle old EV batteries.

Saturday Special – listen this weekend for Ian Johnston from Osprey Charging talking about the future of fueling up, and the innovative load-sharing solutions he's bringing to the UK. A couple of listener comments from yesterday's podcast...Chris in Texas says that I didn't mention the effective price of the Audio Q4 e-tron yesterday. Whilst it has a competitive price of $43,900 for the Q4 40, I forgot to mention the federal tax credit, which means I should be saying $36,400 after incentives. That's a good price for a 82kWh car, with 201hp and sub-8 second 0-60mph. EPA range possibly around 250 miles. And Michelle in Sacramento made a point about the Mercedes-Benz EQS. I talked about the starting price of $102,310 for the EQS 450+. That has a 107.8kWh pack with 487 miles of range on the WLTP. She pointed out the entry-level S Class is $109,800, so the EQS is almost 10 grand cheaper than the equivalent petrol. FORD PARTNERS WITH TESLA FOUNDER ON BATTERY RECYCLING & SUPPLY CHAIN "Ford Motor Co. announced on Wednesday plans to team up with a co-founder of Tesla Inc. on battery recycling in an effort to improve Ford's domestic battery supply chain for electric vehicles." reports the Detroit Free Press: "This new partnership with Redwood Materials, run by CEO J.B. Straubel, the first chief technology officer at Tesla, focuses on "localizing the complex supply chain network, creating recycling options for end-of-life vehicles, ramping lithium-ion recycling and increasing U.S. battery production," Ford said in a news release. Straubel, who worked at Tesla from 2004 to 2019, has built a reputation for creating a circular supply chain for batteries and helping partners in the electric-vehicle and clean-energy industries by providing technologies to remanufacture lithium-ion batteries. As part of this new collaboration, Ford also announced it has invested $50 million in Redwood." They add: "Ford announced in May plans to manufacture battery cells and arrays, which store energy for later use, through multiple BlueOvalSK battery plants in North America starting around 2025. BlueOvalSK is the U.S. joint venture between Ford and SK Innovation." "With Ford, Redwood Materials is looking to be more deeply integrated than just a recycling partner. Straubel's startup is working with the Detroit automaker to figure out plans for everything from helping to process scrap material, to finding new life for worn-down batteries with ample capacity remaining, to helping Ford create new batteries out of salvaged lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper." says The Verge: "the overarching goal is one that Straubel has talked about frequently since founding Redwood Materials. The idea is to create a “circular” or “closed loop” system where the stuff that makes up lithium-ion batteries gets recycled and reused, which could theoretically drive down the cost of an EV's battery while reducing the automaker's reliance on imported materials and (one day) mining." JB was employee #5 at Tesla, he is as central to their success story as anyone else, and it's not surprising Ford want to invest. The facility is expected to begin rolling out vehicles by 2023. Foxconn had previously reported plans to begin building factories in both Thailand and the U.S. next year." says The Verge: "The initial production capacity of the Thailand facility will be around 50,000 units, which Foxconn says will increase three-fold by 2030. The Thailand plant officially marks Foxconn as an automaker in its own right, but the company is also working with EV maker Fisker on a U.S. manufacturing plant, which should also start production in 2023. The Lucid Air Dream Edition can be ordered in two trims, the Dream Edition R, which provides the 520 mile (836 kilometer) range and delivers 933 horsepower, enough to power the large sedan to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.7 seconds." The publication says drivers must rely on charging infrastructure if they plan to drive longer distances." reports InsideEVs: "While nearly 400 miles of range is a pretty solid estimate for an EV produced today, it's interesting that BMW would state that it has no intention of striving for more range. WhichCar writes that BMW i4 project leader David Ferrufino said the automaker won't target a 1,000-kilometer driving range." He said: "One thousand kilometres of range is not a target we have with our fully-electric cars. We are aiming for 600 kilometres [of driving range] for our fully-electric cars, and 100 kilometres with our plug-in hybrids in everyday driving. For example, we don't think a range of 600 kilometres will be suitable for a BMW i3 as an urban car, but when it comes to the BMW iX or i4, we think that around 600 kilometres is a very customer-friendly solution." Global carbon emissions fell in 2020 for the first time in decades, due to the pandemic and the resulting economic slowdown. Empty airports and quiet highways meant fewer planes and cars spewing carbon dioxide into the air. The decline was significant, but emissions need to fall even more - for several years in a row - in order to reach the emissions goals set by the Paris Climate Agreement. To make matters worse: emissions are rising again. On today's Brainstorm, Michal Lev-Ram and Brian O'Keefe examine ways technology can help combat climate change. Andrew Beebe, a Managing Director with the early-stage venture firm Obvious Ventures, talks about the enormous business opportunity decarbonizing the global economy poses, and talks about the companies his firm is backing, from electric buses to flying cars. JB Straubel, CEO and Founder of Redwood Materials discusses recycling batteries for electric vehicles. The co-founder and former CTO of Tesla says battery recycling, as a relatively new field, is ripe for innovation. Also in the episode, Rob Niven, Founder and CEO of Carbon Cure, talks about enabling the concrete industry to improve operations while reducing its carbon footprint.
In today's episode: Samsung unveils its new midrange phones, the Galaxy A52, A52 5G and A72, we talk about these all new interesting phones packed with 90Hz+ displays, IP67 water/dust resistance, 64MP main sensor with OIS and some awesome specs. The Galaxy S21 FE is launching later in the year, along with Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 2, but, weirdly enough, the new Galaxy Note 21 may not launch due to chip shortages possibly. OnePlus 9 Pro will have 50W wireless fast charging finally, OnePlus Watch will not have Wear OS by Google, but will have seamless connectivity, heartrate tracking and more. We've got a leak for Xiaomi's first foldable and E-bike batteries could be recyclable thanks to a tie-up between bikemaker Specialized and renowned recycler Redwood Materials. 上面幾個大字:〈Why it has to be Joe Biden〉(為什麼必須是拜登)。 中國版塊 財經板塊第二篇〈Making inroads:The overseas activities of Chinese banks shift up a gear〉(取得進展:中資銀行的海外業務向高位轉移) 1. 財經板塊第四篇〈Caveat victor:If China's economy is so strong, why isn't its currency stronger?〉(警告勝利者:如果中國的經濟如此強勁,為什麼它的貨幣不是那麼堅挺?) 1. 《金融時報》社論指出〈The march of Ant is a Chinese success story :Fintech group's increasing power raises policy issues for regulators〉(螞蟻的前進是一個中國的成功故事,這個金融科技集團越來越大的勢力激發了監管機構的政策議題。) Powered by Firstory Hosting
The latest, newest attacks against clean energy, namely “Oh my God, what are we going to do with all those solar panels and wind turbines and batteries at the end of their lives” and "Oh my God, what about the mining practices employed to get the materials necessary for clean energy ” are, in one word, bollocks. In Episode 42 of The Angry Clean Energy Guy, you will hear how the take-back and treatment of solar panels, inverters and batteries is already mandatory in the EU and is going global; how technologies to recycle solar panels are today everywhere around us and some reach an astonishing 96% recycling efficiency; how you can already recycle 85 to 90% of the total mass of wind turbines; and how 95% of lithium-ion battery components are being turned into new batteries or used in other industries. Most importantly perhaps, you can also see why the DNA of the clean energy industry is about building a circular economy around its products, in contrast to the DNA of Big Oil, which is about destroying, free of charge to them, our habitat.
