After 30 years, Liverpool have been crowned champions of England. Wogan's emotions got the better of him in the end. We discuss why that happened given his increasingly complicated relationship with the club. The big challenge for Jurgen Klopp is keeping this group of players motivated. Have they peaked or is it the start of a dynasty? There won't be many Manchester United fans celebrating this week but the return of key players and a couple of wins, including progression to the FA Cup semi-final, suggests Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has turned a corner. An in-form Chelsea await at Wembley, they’re going well too. Or do Arsenal have next season in the bag with Kieran 'Tesco' Tierney Across the Pennines, Leeds United are edging closer to promotion. Allen isn’t happy about it. What will Bielsa bring to the Premier League? We also run the rule over Watford's lockdown issues, Arjen Robben's return and a new study that suggests football commentators are guilty of entrenching archaic racial stereotypes. In a quick-fire second half, we discuss Vince Carter's NBA legacy, check in on golf's coronavirus problem and drool over Mercedes' new black Formula 1 livery. Show #625 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 29th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 PRODUCTION TO START IN A FEW DAYS ON NOVEMBER 4 Volkswagen to officially start production of its first ID. model, the Volkswagen ID.3, on November 4 at Zwickau plant in Germany. It will be a big day for Volkswagen, which has been converting the plant to accommodate EVs based on an all-new MEB platform since 2018." reports InsideEVs: "The German manufacturer promised that the Zwickau plant will be the biggest all-electric car factory in Europe with a target of 330,000 cars per year fust a few years from now. Six MEB-based models are expected by the end of 2021. The first ID.3 produced at the site will not be for sale as Volkswagen first will build demo fleet we guess. Customer deliveries are set to begin in mid-2020." https://insideevs.com/news/379246/volkswagen-id-production-start-november-4/ TESLA BOOSTS MODEL S AND MODEL X RANGE AHEAD OF UPCOMING OTA POWER UPGRADE "Tesla has adjusted the listed range of its flagship Model S and Model X, listing the vehicles’ actual range on its design studio. With this change, the Model S Long Range is now listed with a range of 373 miles per charge and the Model X Long Range has been adjusted to 328 miles per charge. " reeports Teslarati. On the UK site I can see MOdel S Long Range is 379 miles, and Performance is 367 miles. The article continues: "Tesla’s competitors, particularly the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-tron, are equipped with batteries that are only marginally smaller than those being used by the electric car maker. Yet, the range of the Taycan and the e-tron are still in the 200+ mile range. Tesla, on the other hand, is squeezing over 370 miles of range per charge from a 100 kWh battery pack." Which reminds of a Top Gear video running the Model S Performance and Taycan Turbo S on the Autobahn, at their top speeds on the same stretch of road. They took the power consumption and worked out a theoretical maximum range if you did were at that speed. The Porsche 65 miles of range at top speed and the Model S 83 miles. There are too many holes in that to make it a apples-to-apples comparison but it is a bit of fun. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-model-x-range-increase-ota-power-update/ MERCEDES EQS SPIED TRYING TO CONCEAL ITS CURVES The Mercedes-Benz EQS is the brand's upcoming flagship electric vehicle, and these spy shots provide a great view of its current development. There's even a glimpse inside the cabin." reports Chris Bruce for Motor1: "In profile, the EQS has a sleek shape with an arching roofline. Pop-out door handles keep the flanks looking smooth. The model has a short rear, and this one still wears placeholder pieces for the taillights. Inside, there's a digital instrument cluster on a tablet-like display ahead of the driver. Mercedes keeps the center stack under a fabric cover, but the company's recent designs suggest there would be a large infotainment screen and possibly more monitors for showing the HVAC settings. The EQS will reportedly debut in 2020, likely in the latter half of the year. It will be a major part of Mercedes' 10-billion Euro ($11 billion at current exchange rates) investment into electrification." https://www.motor1.com/news/379154/mercedes-benz-eqs-spy-shots/ TOP US PRIVATE COAL MINER MURRAY ENERGY FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY "Murray Energy, the US largest privately owned coal producer led by outspoken Donald Trump ally Robert Murray, has filed for chapter 11 protection, as the fossil fuel’s role in the country’s energy mix continues to diminish." says Mining.com: "The Ohio-based miner, the eighth coal company to go under over the past year, said it had reached a restructuring agreement with lenders to restructure more than $2.7 billion of debt. US coal exports are estimated to have dropped to 20.9 million tonnes in the third quarter, according to the country’s Energy Information Administration (EIA). That represents a 28% fall compared to the same period in 2018." https://www.mining.com/us-top-private-coal-miner-murray-energy-files-for-bankruptcy/ THE ELECTRIC BUS BOOM IN WESTERN EUROPE " 2019 may be remembered as the year when the electric bus sales volumes definitive ramp up. While in 2018 the European electric bus market increased of 48 per cent compared to 2017, in the first nine months of 2019 there has already been a + 100 per cent registrations." reports sustainable-bus.com: "The figures on alternative driveline buses show that registrations of hybrid buses are roughly constant from 2016 to the present day. Natural gas buses experienced a sudden growth in 2017, which, with 1,030 registrations, tripled the 2016 result. Fuel cell buses resulted to be a few units per year (1 in 2016, 4 in 2017, 0 in 2018, 1 in 2019 so far). On the other hand, the registrations of electric buses are growing steadily. As of 30 September 2019, 1,123 battery electric buses (trolleybuses included) have been registered. And there is room for further growth, as the last few months of the year are usually marked by a large number of registrations." https://www.sustainable-bus.com/news/electric-bus-market-europe-2019-registrations-over-1000-units/ TESLA MODEL 3 BECOMES FIRST ELECTRIC CAR APPROVED AS NYC YELLOW CAB "Tesla Model 3 has become the first all-electric car to be approved for use as an official New York City yellow cab, according to the list of approved vehicles." according to electrek: "Electrek reader Brent Caswell pointed out that the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission officially approved the Tesla Model 3 to become a NYC yellow cab Also, the Model 3 strangely doesn’t qualify for the alternative fuel medallion vehicle. It appears to be because the category was specifically created for hybrids and natural gas-powered vehicles and not all-electric vehicles. More people are starting to consider electric vehicles, and especially the Model 3, for commercial purposes like a taxi service. They are not only looking at the gas savings but also at the potential maintenance savings and longevity of the electric vehicles." https://electrek.co/2019/10/29/tesla-model-3-first-electric-car-approved-nyc-yellow-cab/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… Set by listener Martin Young: “What were some of your biggest surprises about living with a BEV?” I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 256 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #577 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 11th September 2019. VW ID.3 LAUNCHED Is this the most important car being shown at the Frankfurt motor show? It has a good case. It's the first car built on VW's MEB platform, upon which all the VW Group cars will be built. And we saw another of those at the show, the Seat el Born, which I prefer in terms of styling. Why three? The Beetle, then the Golf, and now this. It's a reminder how seriously they're taking this. The ID.3 is very rounded and soft featuring the new VW Matrix LED headlights. 4.26m long, 2.76m wheelbase - so the length is the same as a Golf but during the presentation they said it has Passat space. 145 mm longer between axles than the golf, and 60mm higher. 18-20" wheels, including the now standard aero wheels. NO fancy door handles which present themselves! Very short overhangs, wheels on four corners. Platform (ground up) design means short bonnet. The A-pillar is dragged very far forward and then a long sweeping screen. Skateboard battery design for a low centre of gravity. Rear wheel drive for balance. 148bhp or 201bhp so it could be a sporty drive. 160kmh/100mph top speed. 7 seconds 0-62mph. WLTP - 205 / 261 / 342 miles. 100,000 mile warranty on the battery too. Contrasting roof and boot lid, in black. Which some say is too similar to the LEAF. With a large glass panoramic roof which can't be opened. CCS DC Fast charging on the rear quarter panel above the wheel - is the best place for it? 100kw DC charging, upgraded to 125kW and 11kW AC charging. 45kWh, 58kWh and 77kWh. Battery cells from LG Chem. Extra regen / one pedal mode. No frunk, under the bonnet is the HVAC and 12volt battery. Interior - small driver display behind the wheel and it moves with the wheel when you move it for confort. Electric drivers seat, and all animal free products in some trims. Gear select on the column, a rotary dial to select Park, Drive, Reverse. Head up Display on some trims. talking of trims, they shows off a bright orange dual-colour interior trim which wasn't universally loved. They do have more options for toned down trims. Brake has a pause icon, the accelerator has a play icon. Large centre 10" screen angles to the driver on a stalk, and that's because the dash is pushed so far away from the front occupants, you'd never be able to touch it. Almost buttonless - there is temperature, volume, hazards and not much else. Nice armrests which lift up, they cover storage with two USB-C chargers. The skateboard design means no middle tunnel for the drivetrain. Two more USB chargers in the back. In the boot a fake bottom for cable storage, and you open the boot by flicking the VW badge as is standard on their piston cars. Prices - starting under 30,000 Euros, which should be under £25,000 when you convert to pounds and factor in the car grant. The 'First' edition is the middle battery of 55kWh. What do VW say? "The optional AR Head-up Display sends useful information straight into the windscreen's field of vision, making driving easier for you. For instance, it shows you where to turn or which lane you should take. The projection on the windscreen and what’s happening on the tarmac seem to become one." "You can choose between 45 kWh, 58 kWh or 77 kWh. And that’s not all: the medium battery can recharge a range of up to approx. 260 miles in 30 mins, in quick charge mode with DC (direct current) with 100 kW performance. And with the biggest battery (77 kWh, net), you can travel up to 340 miles on full charge.¹" "Fumbling with buttons whilst you drive is a thing of the past. Keep your eyes on the road and control the radio, optional navigation system or your phone easily with intuitive voice control. Just say ‘Hello ID’ – and the system will understand you." "The stylish optional Matrix LED headlights light up briefly as if they were winking at you, making the ID.3 seem almost human. The ID.Light inside makes you feel welcome immediately. When you start, the vehicle makes a little sound to get you in the mood to get started. When you leave your ID.3, the ID.Light says goodbye with a light signal." MERCEDES LAUNCHES FE TEAM AND REVEALS VANDOORNE/DE VRIES AS DRIVERS "Mercedes has launched its ABB FIA Formula E squad, while also unveiling Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries as its drivers and the livery of its Silver Arrow 01 car." writes Autosport: "The new squad will make its debut in the upcoming 2019/20 FE campaign, where it will take over the entry previously assigned to the HWA team that competed as a Venturi customer last season. The Drive says: "The Renault City K-ZE has just been announced for the Chinese market, where it offers a stunning combination of electric range and low cost. Starting at 61,800 Yuan, or about $8,700 US Dollars, and its 30kWh Tianjin Lishen battery offers a remarkable 250 km, or 155 miles of NEDC-rated range." https://www.thedrive.com/tech/29729/the-worlds-most-important-electric-car-is-launching-now-and-its-not-a-porsche-or-tesla TESLA S OWNERS NUMBER HIGH AMONG NEW CONQUESTS FOR THE PORSCHE TAYCAN Porsche has been speaking about the Taycan and Tesla Model S comparisons: "Porsche North America president and CEO Klaus Zellmer told Yahoo Finance UK in Frankfurt that he has no problems with people comparing the two electric cars, but for him the real test is how the car fits into the Porsche lineage, as well as people’s expectations for the brand’s first battery-electric vehicle." Zellmer said: "“Currently, 50% of the people who raised their hand or put down a deposit to get a Taycan already drive a Porsche, somewhere in their fleet, and the other 50% are people who do not drive a Porsche but another car. Here's a short look at our interview with former F1 race engineer Rob Smedley. He talks openly about his move to Ferrari, and why they were the most dominant team in the sport for quite some time. The former Williams man also has his say on Mercedes' current dominance with Lewis Hamilton and hints when he could make a possible return. Again apologies for back ground noise, it had to be record in a restaurant that got slightly more busy than intended. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Kicking off the chat this week, we discuss Labor’s plan to boost electric vehicle sales to a half of all new cars by 2030 (1:45) and it’s even more ambitious strategy to resurrect Australian car manufacturing (10:45). And rounding out the conversation, Dan reviews his time in the most significant vehicle in Lamborghini’s history – the Urus. Can an SUV ever truly carry the Raging Bull badge on its nose and is there anything that makes its first high-rider since the LM002 a worth supercar (23:50)? Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Sunday 24th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. REMOTE SPEED LIMIT FOLLOWING LATEST TESLA SOFTWARE PUSH Steven Loveday at InsideEVs writes: "Tesla’s recent over-the-air update adds a speed-limiting feature that is available via the mobile app." So why do that? Well if you've waited two years for a Model 3 and lend it to a friend, leave it somewhere for a service, or even take it to a valet, you might want to restrict how much of that performance they can use. "According to Electrek, this new feature is part of software version 2018.24 and Tesla mobile app update 3.4.1. While the feature can be controlled via your smartphone and the Tesla app, you still have to be with the car to enable it while in Park." https://insideevs.com/tesla-update-allows-remote-speed-limiting/ MERCEDES SLOWS DOWN BEFORE IT SPEEDS UP com: "Mercedes is pulling its PHEV C-Class, GLC and GLE-Class models from the market as it readies their new, next-generation replacements, which are due out next year. The outgoing PHEV models are being replaced with EQ-branded models that feature Mercedes' nine-speed transmission and electric motor all in one unit." So EQ is the name for any form of electrification. On the topic of the next era of plug ins, carbuzz say: "Top speed in electric mode has been raised to 87 mph (up from 81 mph in the second-generation). In addition, the electric range is up to 31 miles compared to only 21 miles in the second-generation." VW PIKES PEAK RACER com: "[VW's] I.D. R Pikes Peak, which was unveiled in April, will debut on Sunday, equipped with two electric motors that allow it to accelerate to 60 miles per hour in under 2.5 seconds. The car was faster than any other vehicle up the first 5.2 miles of the course in qualifying on Wednesday. The course’s design makes even finishing difficult for humans and gas-powered vehicles. Thin air depletes racers’ energy and their cars’ engine capacity." LI SHUFU HAS A US$15 BILLION DREAM FOR GEELY’S LONDON BLACK TAXIS Chris Gubbey, chief executive of London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC): "If you take this quintessentially London product and turn it into a zero emission, purpose-designed taxi, it can become a transport solution and a contributor to improving air quality in every major city across the globe. Geely’s founder Li Shufu wants to “bring the product to the new world and into the new generation,” he said in an interview with the South China Morning Post. "Geely paid £11 million (US$14.6 million) in 2013 for The London Taxi Company, followed by another £295 million to build a new factory with the annual capacity to assemble 20,000 vehicles, while another £30 million were invested to develop a commercial van." "Meanwhile, work began last month on a 7.2 billion yuan (US$1.1 billion) factory in Yiwu with the capacity for 100,000 electric vehicles a year. The Yiwu model, a variant of the black taxi, will be modified and adapted to Chinese preferences and tastes to serve a niche segment of premium ride-hailing services in China." HONDA SHOWCASES ITS 6,000 SOLAR PANEL ROOFTOP INSTALL com: "Honda flipped the switch on a new solar energy system at the American Honda Motor Co., Inc. campus in Torrance, Calif., one of the largest solar arrays on a commercial building in Southern California, and at 2.0 megawatts (MW) direct current, one of Honda’s largest on-site renewable energy installations anywhere in the world. The new solar array features more than 6,000 panels and is expected to generate approximately 3,000-megawatt hours (MWh) annually." Tuesday 17th April 2018. The current Model 3 Tracker from Tom Randall and Dean Halford, as updated on 16th April, shows 16,587 cars produced, and a current rate of 2,731 Model 3’s being built per week. Frist up a video recommendation, Fully Charged have a long YouTube video all about the Jaguar I-PACE. They get the drive that all the other car reviewers had around the cones, then they got a longer drive of it later, plus a lot of shots of both the static car and a cutaway of it – so you can see the batteries, motor, inverter and all the techy bits. ARTICLE BY LI SHIFU A look today’s newspaper article by the Geely Chairman Li Shufu: “Carmakers need to realise the combustion engine is spluttering and grasp the future” QUICKLY DOES IT WITH 175KW CHARGERS Everyone wants something quickly these days – from fast food to listening to podcasts on fast forward, so you can fit twice as many in! But when it comes to fast charging, it’s a double edged sword. When you need to rapid charge you want to do it quickly, but then again you don’t want to abuse your battery all the time. On the whole however the fast the better if you’re on a road trip, and everyone else will get a little taste of what Tesla owners have enjoyed with supercharging, plus a bit more. 350kW chargers are starting to be installed in Europe. And sitting somewhere between 50kW rapid chargers and those beasts are the 175Kw chargers being installed by Fastned. Clean Energy News reports: “Newcastle University is to be home to what could be the UK’s first public 175kW electric vehicle chargers under a new project with Dutch charging frm Fastned, which has won a tender from the North East Combined Authority (NECA) and the university. The contract will see two Go Ultra Low fast charging ‘filling stations’ constructed in the city centres of Newcastle and Sunderland. Each will offer six 50kW fast chargers while two of those at the university will be the latest 175kW chargers, which are enabled to be upgraded to 350kW in the future. The 350kW option was recently unveiled by Fastned as a result of its partnership with technology provider ABB, with the first units installed at the modular De Watering charging station near Amsterdam.” SOLAR AND STORAGE FOR MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIPS Most EV buyers can return to a dealer under the umbrella of their manufacturer to charge their car for free – for example Nissan buyers can often stop off at a Nissan dealer to top up their LEAF. Not always, but it’s common. Now in Japan Mitsubishi want to take that a step further. Mitsubishi’s 28 showrooms throughout Japan which have solar panels and the ability to use an electric vehicle’s battery power as an emergency power source, via a Vehicle-to- Building (V2B) charger. However the new Omiya “Hyper Energy Station”, opened this week in Saitama City, has also been fitted with its own lithium-ion battery packs to provide substantial power back up to the local electricity grid” says Automotive World: “Featuring lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 12kWh, the building can supply power for recharging electric vehicles (EV) in the event of a natural disaster or power outage, when normal power supplies are cut off. EVs have played a key role in transporting people and good in previous emergencies in Japan, when conventional fuel supplies have been severely disrupted. MMC has already opened 28 “DENDO Drive Station” showrooms across Japan, all featuring solar panels and V2B charging stations. It plans to increase this number to 200 by 2020. FRANCE BREAKS EV RECORDS EV Sales were back up in France last month for March 2018. However it’s back with a bang to new highs. 4,214 EVs were registered in March in France which is up 41.6% year on year. If you count light duty vans as well, that’s 756 electric vans and 1,187 plug-ins. France likes to keep in domestic with strong sales for Renault Zoe, which led with 2,245. It’s over half of all electric vehicles sold. As for the new LEAF it did explode, at 719 LEAFS, still up over 100% year on year. Also up were the BMW i3 in 3rd place and the Tesla Model S landing with 162 new buyers. Finishing up in 5th place was the elusive Hyundai IONIQ. LEXUS LS ELECTRIFICATION Lexus are working on PHEV, full BEVs and hydrogen drivetrains all at once. They say they’re all on the table. For a luxury maker like Lexus, electric refinement makes perfect sense offering a quiet ride and high performance. Lexus need to keep up with luxury EV’s from BMW and Mercedes all coming very soon. Autoblog point out: “The battery electric LS is a big question mark outside of Lexus HQ. Last year Toyota announced a breakthrough in solid state battery technology, the carmaker announcing it wanted such batteries on the market by 2022. The technology won't be cheap, making an LS the perfect car to launch it, and compete with Mercedes' electric EQ S sedan slated to arrive in 2020. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. From the moment Mercedes' book,Mary Magdalene Beckons landed in my hands, all the questions I was holding in my heart began to find their answers... Questions like: Why am I here? What is my mission? How can I serve our planet and the rise of the divine feminine? all began to come together with such clarity. I am honored to share this conversation with Mercedes with you today. I hope the wisdom she shares is of service to you, and your growth. May we continue on this path of ascension, rising together in unity. With all my blessings, Meredith "Outside events of life don’t cause our feelings, they cause us to get disconnected from our divinity. Is Mercedes' mystical 'party mode' a myth? Well, for Formula 1's sake, let's hope so. However, full marks to Mercedes for scaring the living day lights out of the competition in qualifying, although that lap has to be attributed more to Lewis Hamilton's talent than the Mercedes package. If the 'party mode' is for real then it will end up ruining the 2018 party for all of us. In this week's episode of the [Inside Line F1 Podcast](http://bit.ly/ilf1ponkf1b), Mithila and Kunal pick the best moments from the 2018 Australian Grand Prix, wonder why Formula 1 didn't test when the teams did and why Max Verstappen's assessment of the race isn't accurate.

After a long winter, the Pitpass trio of Chris Balfe, Mat Coch and Max Noble are back to preview the opening round of the 2016 Formula One season. The first Pitpass podcast of the year looks back at pre-season testing as the crew share their thoughts on the state of affairs within the sport and look forward to the Australian Grand Prix. For Balfe, testing presented a worrying state of affairs as the status quo from last year looks to have remained. Mercedes' bullet-proof reliability has him most concerned, though there are hopes others have caught up to make a truly competitive season for all. There are hopes from Noble that Fernando Alonso will need directions to the podium at some point this season as a reinvigorated McLaren challenges in the midfield, a battle Coch is hoping proves as close as it looks. However there is universal concern over the all-new qualifying format which sees drivers eliminated every ninety seconds. The complicated new system is of course just one of two revisions designed with the express purpose of alienating and confusing fans as tyre regulations also get an overhaul. Though details of the new tyre rules have been published everybody in the Pitpass office now boasts a bald patch where they've been scratching their heads. Ferrari's debut of the proposed halo system, designed to give drivers better protection, also gets a mention as do ways for the sport to better connect with fans. It's a topic of conversation that sends Balfe off on a rose-tinted stroll down memory lane as he recalls Jim Clark's overalls, Chris Amon's affinity for ice cream and Ronnie Petersen's underpants.

Max Verstappen's crash, Mercedes' decision to pit Lewis Hamilton, Williams lack of pace and McLaren scoring points. It was a Monaco Grand Prix worth talking about. But there's so much more the team sinks its teeth into, including the lack of leadership within Formula One. That's just the tip of the iceberg as Coch has a conspiracy theory, Balfe rants like he's never ranted before and Noble gets stuck in to the Strategy Group.
