Roanne Adams, founder and Chief Creative Director of RoAndCo Studio, is our guest today. In this wide-ranging conversation, Roanne and Sharon cover many topics. You'll hear them speak of self-care, the spiritual journey, relationships, and business, to name a few. What stands out is Roanne's commitment to putting her Process into practice, personally and professionally. It's often fascinating how people learn about the Hoffman Process. Frequently, it comes through word of mouth. In Roanne's case, she heard about it from her financial advisor after receiving difficult news. Roanne walks us through this moment with candor and grace, a moment that brought her to the Hoffman Process. As a visionary business owner in the design world, Roanne knows the creative and often turbulent world of entrepreneurship well. Through her Process, she found clarity. She also realized that part of her purpose is to serve others. Roanne deepened her capacity for self-care and her ability to pass this knowledge on to others through her work. We hope you enjoy this conversation and learning about Roanne's journey of change through her rich life stories. Send us a textIn this very open and frank conversation, Christophe speaks about how color influences their projects, what are crucial elements for the success of their work and the difficulties they came across on their design journey and the challenge to innovate and pick projects that reflect their values. Connection, Rebellion, Artisan and Sensory, that is what Masquespacio is all about. Christophe Penasse was born the 4th of March 1983 in a small city next to the capital of Belgium, Brussels. Since a very young age his mother taught him to be a saver. Something that motivates him to sell his old games on trail markets and to his friends. When he was 15 years old while he studied Commerce in his country, during holidays and his free time he started to work for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in Brussels. Being music his passion, at the same time he started to buy and sell records online. After finishing his college studies he went to study marketing in Mechelen, next to Antwerp, while he continued to work during his free time at Sony giving a helping hand to the commercial and marketing department, without losing his passion for music. After schooling in marketing he worked a short time for the American Enterprise Federal Express before accomplishing his dream to go live in Spain, a country that he felt in love with because of its culture and way of living. In Spain the first 5 months he only dedicated to study Spanish and its culture, to later on being contracted as a customer manager for the German cash & carry Makro. After two years of work at the customers' department he decided to start up design studio Masquespacio with his partner Ana Milena Hernández Palacios. At Masquespacio he is in charge of the marketing and commercial department, as well as being involved in the strategic part of the creative consultancy's projects.Masquespacio is an award winning creative consultancy created in 2010 by Ana Milena Hernández Palacios and Christophe Penasse. Combining the 2 disciplines of their founders, interior design and marketing, the Spanish design agency creates custom-made branding and interior projects through a unique approach that results in fresh and innovative concepts. In 2020 they won the EDIDA 2020 ‘Young Talent Award' by the international network of Elle Decoration Magazine and in 2019 they have been awarded ‘Interior Designers of The Year' by the Spanish edition of The New York Times' T Magazine. Previously they also have been awarded with the ‘Massimo Dutti New Values' award by Architectural Digest Spain and the ‘Wave of the Future' award by Hospitality Design USA, next to a continued international recognition by media specialized in design, fashion and lifestyle trends. They have worked on projects in several countries like Norway, USA, France, Portugal, Germany, USA and Spain.Actually they are working on several hotel and restaurant projects in Spain, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, Germany, Qatar, Singapore and Cambodia amongst others. In 2019 they also created Mas Creations a new lifestyle brand that shows their most personal vision through a universe of textures, materials and colors represented in new furniture collections as well as interiors.Thank you for listening! This week the Vietnamese photographer and author Ngoc Minh Ngo. Ngoc was born in Vietnam in 1963 and grew up during the Vietnam War. Her father, Chau Minh Ngo, was a colonel in the South Vietnam Army and her mother Phi Truong became a nurse's aide after raising eight children. Ngoc was the sixth child—she has four sisters and three brothers. Despite enduring a brutal war, Ngoc describes her childhood as enchanting and beautiful. Her parents did all they could to protect their family and offer some normalcy to those troubling times by spending time on the beach. At the age of 12, shortly before the end of the war in 1975, the family were evacuated to the US and settled in Sacramento, California where, with the help of sponsors, they began a new life. Ngoc described herself as a very shy and reserved child but that did not hinder her development. She found her own way to the University of California, Berkeley where she earned a BA followed by a Masters of Landscape Design at Columbia University. After spending some time traveling to Japan and Europe Ngoc made her way to New York with a view to working in painting restoration. But after a chance encounter while working on a feature film she discovered her true passion was to be photography, so she learned black & white photography and developing. Ngoc's images have been published The World of Interiors, T Magazine, Vogue, Architectural Digest, Cabana, and House & Garden UK. She is also the author of five books: Bringing Nature Home: Floral Arrangements Inspired by Nature; In Bloom: Creating and Living with Flowers, and Eden Revisited: A Garden in Northern Morocco, The House of a Lifetime, and New York Green. She is currently working on a new book entitled Roses in the Garden inspired by her father's death. She has, she says, always been independent and self-contained, paving her own way as a refugee and re-imaging her life as a reflection through the beauty of the images she creates. Ngoc and her husband, the photographer Julian Wass, live in New York. They have a daughter Lily who works in public health and is also a poet. Today we talked two articles of interest that we fully broke down — T Magazine's "What We'll Be Obsessing Over in 2024" and After School's "The Gen Z Gift Guide: What do they actually want for the holidays?" We also dive into some severe sweater talk — the sweaters that own real estate in our heads, our current rotations, recent sweaters we can't stop thinking about, and more. This episode my guest is Jarema Osofsky, founder of the design studio Dirt Queen NYC and author of Moon Garden: A Guide to Creating An Evening Oasis. Moon gardening is an enchanting way to slow down in the evenings, immerse yourself in nature and cultivate a relationship with your plants and the moon and I'm talking with Jarema about how you can create your own. Dr Ian Bedford's Bug of the Week: Large Hairy House Spiders What We Talk About What is a moon garden? Do they have to contain all white flowers? Should you plant for year round interest? Should the garden be visible from the house? Apart from colour, what else is important in a moon garden? Can you create a moon garden indoors? Can moon gardens benefit wildlife? Night blooming and night fragrant plants How best to enjoy your moon garden About the book MOON GARDEN: A Guide to Creating an Evening Oasis (Chronicle 10/3/23) is a guide to creating a garden that comes alive at night, with night-blooming plants and night fragrant flowers. The book is full of design and horticultural wisdom; planting tips for outdoor, indoor, and container gardeners; and soothing rituals such as journaling and meditations. With beautiful botanical illustrations, Moon Garden encourages readers to approach gardening as a grounding, spiritual practice. Spending time outdoors, and bringing nature into one's home, is both joyful and healing. MOON GARDEN is part of Jarema's mission to design beautiful garden spaces that help people cultivate meaningful connections to the natural world, while also benefiting local ecosystems in the process. About Jarema Osofsky Brooklyn-based landscape and interior plant designer, Jarema Osofsky is the founder of Dirt Queen NYC, a garden design and plant care business. Her debut book, MOON GARDEN: A Guide to Creating an Evening Oasis (Chronicle 10/3/23), invites readers to dive into the world of moon gardens and all that they offer. MOON GARDEN is a guide to creating a garden that comes alive at night, with night-blooming plants and night fragrant flowers. Jarema grew up in New York's Hudson Valley, the daughter of an avid gardener. Throughout Jarema's life, visiting family in Hong Kong and Arizona sparked Jarema's love affair with tropical plants, the desert landscape, and unusual cactuses. What started out as a hobby and a “fresh start” after a bad break-up, Jarema began growing plants and sold them in vintage pots in her neighbourhood. She earned her BA in East Asian studies and fine art from Oberlin College and worked as an artist assistant in New York and Los Angeles, where she struggled to find her own form of expression. It was a pivotal moment when she realised that plants were the medium she had been searching for. After developing a strong customer base and advising plant owners, she decided to pour all her energy and passion into starting her own business. Jarema's design studio, Dirt Queen NYC, works closely with clients to create verdant gardens that offer meaningful and ecologically sustainable connections to the natural world. Jarema's work has been featured in Architectural Digest, T Magazine, Elle Decor, Apartment Therapy, and others. Jarema currently resides in Brooklyn, New York with her partner Adam, and their pup, Esme. A day in the life includes a trip to the local farmers market, walks in the park with her dog, qi gong and evening journaling. Always watering, pruning or propagating in her garden, Jarema also loves to travel and immerse herself in other cultures, landscapes, botanical gardens, art and architecture. In this episode we are joined by Nell McShane Wulfhart, author of the book The Great Stewardess Rebellion: How Women Launched a Workplace Revolution at 30,000 Feet.Nell is a frequent contributor to the New York Times travel section and wrote the column “Carry On” from 2016 to 2019. She has written for Travel + Leisure, Bon Appétit, Condé Nast Traveler, The Wall Street Journal Magazine, and T Magazine. She is also the author of the Audible Original Off Menu. Her recent work, The Great Stewardess Rebellion: How Women Launched a Workplace Revolution at 30,000 Feet, is a book about how as travel in the jet age became more and more popular in the 1960s, women from across America applied for jobs as stewardesses. They were drawn to the promise of glamour, the chance to travel, and as an alternative to traditional occupations for women of this time period like homemaking, nursing, and teaching. But as the number of stewardesses grew, so did their suspicion that the job was not as picture-perfect as the ads would have them believe, including some of their supervisors spying on their personal lives (thankfully this was not the practice of Pan Am or TWA). These women had to adhere to strict weight limits at all times. If they gained a few extra pounds, they were suspended from work. For many airlines, stewardesses couldn't marry or have children or risk losing their employment. Requirements for hair styles and makeup had to be followed and was strictly enforced and girdles were mandatory at all times. It was also common for most domestic airlines that stewardesses had to resign by age 32.In the latter half of the 1960s, stewardesses began to push back against their employers creating an employment movement that changed the industry. Nell Mchane Wulfhart crafts a rousing narrative of female empowerment, the paradigm-shifting 1960s and 1970s, the labor movement, and the cadre of gutsy women who fought for their rights and won. Gloria Steinem said of Nell's book, “the true story of women who stood up to huge corporations and won, creating momentous change for all working women.”The Pan Am Museum's high school intern Michael Gentner assisted with this interview as guest co-host. --------------------Visit Us for more Pan Am History! Welcome back to our podcast! Today, we're in conversation with artist and designer, Matthew Fisher. Brought up in a family steeped in geology, his early interactions with quarries, dinosaur fossils, and sediment lines imparted a unique understanding of time. This childhood insight fostered a deep love for timeworn materials like stone, a love that shines through in his work today. Originally trained as a ballet dancer, Matthew's career took an unexpected turn after a career-ending injury. After enrolling in an Egyptian Art and Architecture course by chance, he developed an interest that soon expanded to include Roman art and architecture. With his design process deeply rooted in the study of ancient cultures, Matthew skillfully distills modern designs, creating pieces that exude an ambiguity of time and place. His work has caught the attention of esteemed publications like Galerie, Surface, and T Magazine, and has been showcased in the Noguchi Museum's group exhibition “On the Verge”. Join us today as we delve into the fascinating creative process of Matthew Fisher! A young sake bar owner, Yusuke Shimoki, arrives on the doorstep of Hannah Kirshner's Brooklyn apartment “with a suitcase full of Ishikawa sake,” in Hannah's words. That visit sparked a years-long connection between Hannah and the rural Japanese community of Yamanaka, a home for artisans and artists, hunters and farmers, and other ordinary Japanese trying to live in the countryside. Sacred Pact is a boutique film production company based in New York City. I first heard of Sacred Pact doing short commercials for my good friends and guests of the pod Kelsey and Lia for their project Sunday School where they featured their line of tees and work. I also heard of Sacred Pact though their collaboration with friend and guest of the pod, Che Nembard of Clips Co-Op and their installment of Double Feature Fridays where they feature cult classic films and free vibes. After their partnership I had to know what Sacred Pact was about. Sacred Pact came together in 2016 through the love of exploration, storytelling, and rich visuals. They have directed, DP'd, produced, and edited numerous short documentaries, music videos, and fashion commercials. Sacred Pact clients include T Magazine, Vice, Vogue, Billboard, Dazed Media, The Metropolitan Opera and a ton more. Our friendships became bigger when I met Sunny Lee through another friend and guest of the pod, Sabreen Jafry at a Clips Co-Op activation at Public Records. If you don't know these places or what I'm saying, or who these great people are, educate yourself! Lastly I went to a special screening of Sacred Pact's Season 1 of Hidden Kingdom. An unconventional and intimate documentary web series that explores the lives of five New York dancers. It blew me away and I walked out of the screening speechless.
