South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is ousted. What comes next?

PRESS REVIEW – Friday, April 4: We bring you reactions from South Korea after the constitutional court upholds parliament's impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. What comes next for the disgraced leader? Also, we look at reactions from Hungary after Prime Minister Viktor Orban withdraws his country from the ICC. Plus: a US tourist is arrested after leaving a can of Diet Coke for an isolated tribe in the Andaman Islands and King Charles plays a carrot instrument in his first public outing since being hospitalised. We bring you early reactions from the South Korean press after President Yoon Suk Yeol was officially removed from office. All eight constitutional judges voted to uphold the impeachment ruling against Yoon in a verdict handed down this Friday. The Korea Herald offers us an autopsy of his career. It notes that he was once touted as an anti-corruption investigator, but no one thought he would meet the same fate as ex-president Park Geun-hye, whom he helped put behind bars. The conservative leader was impeached by parliament last December after an ill-fated move to impose martial law, albeit for only six hours. It nonetheless plunged South Korea into a political and financial crisis: soldiers were deployed to government sites, clashes with citizens ensued and the unrest evoked painful memories of military rule. The Korea Times focuses on the jubilation of South Koreans, millions of whom are celebrating the president's ouster. The paper also looks at what's to come. Yoon will leave office with no possibility of appealing. He'll lose special privileges like a presidential pension or a national burial. More importantly, he'll face multiple criminal investigations, including for treason. Probes into scandals could also begin. He will face legal accountability, and possibly prison time if found guilty. Fresh elections will be held in two months. In the editorial pages, a lot of reactions came in before the verdict but are still noteworthy. Hanyoreh, a liberal paper, urged the court to remove Yoon from office. It's the only way to restore the nation's trust and fulfill its role as the last bulwark of the constitution, the paper added. JoongAng Daily, a conservative paper of reference, focused more on its call for calm and unity after the court's ruling. It reminds readers that Korean democracy was built on the sacrifices of the citizens and urged citizens to "end this turmoil" by accepting the court's ruling.Next, we look at reactions after Hungary's announced withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC). Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced the decision amid an official visit by Israeli PM Binyamin Netanyahu to Hungary, which is the first EU country to leave the ICC. The German-language Hungarian website Budapester Zeitung goes with the headline "Danke Viktor", echoing comments by Netanyahu thanking Orban for his decision. The daily reminds us that Orban invited Netanyahu last November after the ICC issued an arrest warrant against him for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Orban reiterated his criticism of the court, saying it has not been impartial for years and functions as a political court. The Jewish News Syndicate, a conservative news syndicate of Israeli and Jewish news, hails Orban for "systematically standing up against EU policies selected by the elite in Brussels and West European capitals". It adds that those who stand up against Islamic radicalism and progressive globalist order can thank Netanyahu, Donald Trump and Viktor Orban. For one cartoonist though, Berend Vonk, the red carpet rolled out for Netanyahu in Hungary is merely the blood that the men have shed through their ruthless politics. In other news: the New York Post reports that India has arrested an "idiotic" US tourist for visiting a remote tribe in the Andaman Islands. The 24-year-old influencer travelled for nine hours in a rubber dinghy to reach the North Sentinel islands. He tried to get the tribe's attention by blowing a whistle and left soda and a coconut as an offering, before being arrested. As the Post reports, the man fashions himself as a daredevil traveller, having travelled to Afghanistan and posed with the Taliban. The hunter-gatherer tribe on the Sentinel Islands are extremely isolated and therefore have no immunity from modern diseases. The last person to visit them, a Christian missionary who tried to convert them, was promptly killed. So you could say this tourist got lucky! Finally, Britain's King Charles III has made his return to public duties after a brief period of hospitalisation related to his cancer treatment. The king returned to public service with a heartwarming video of him with the London Vegetable Orchestra. They are the UK's only musical ensemble to play instruments made of local vegetables. Take a look at this video of King Charles playing the most royal of vegetables: the carrot, filmed by the royal family's cameraman!

And as the continent moves away from the Kremlin's energy supply, what will the impact be?  Helen Thompson, professor of Political Economy at the University of Cambridge and author of Disorder, joins Arthur Snell to discuss the geopolitical fallout from Putin's invasion. We're putting out irregular war bulletins covering different aspects of the Ukraine crisis. You can support our work on the crowdfunding app Patreon: doomsdaywatch.co.uk Resources to help the Ukrainian people can be found here: https://ukrainewar.carrd.co/  “Out of the West European reaction to the Suez crisis came the first turn back to Soviet energy.”  “Russia wanted to be an Eurasian energy power, unlike the Soviet Union which was focused on Western Europe.”  “Before the Omicron variant last year, an energy crisis was already beginning to take shape.”  “Europe can't go back to the geopolitical complacency that dominated the continent before Russia's invasion.” DOOMSDAY WATCH was written and presented by Arthur Snell, and produced by Robin Leeburn with Jacob Archbold. Hello Interactors,This post is part three of my three week experiment. I’ve divided my topic into three parts each taking a bit less time for you to read or listen to. They each can stand on their own, but hopefully come together to form a bigger picture. Please let me know what you think.Maps are such a big part of our daily lives that it’s easy to let them wash over us. But they’re also very powerful forms of communication that require our attention and scrutiny. If we don’t, we run the risk of being hypnotized and even deluded. As interactors, you’re special individuals self-selected to be a part of an evolutionary journey. You’re also members of an attentive community so I welcome your participation. Please leave your comments below or email me directly. Now let’s go…THE GIPPER AND CAP MAKE A MAPOn the top of the geography building at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) was a high security floor the CIA helped to fund…or so I heard. I never set foot in there, but I know both the CIA and the FBI routinely recruited geography students when I was there in the late 80s. They still do. The geography department was, and still is, buzzing with research in cartography, satellite imaging, and Geographic Information Science (GIS). I remember learning how to detect a hidden nuclear missile silo camouflaged in the Russian landscape using stereoscopic glasses pointed at two LANDSAT images produced from orbiting satellites. Special imaging software was also being developed at the university to better filter and detect these patterns, and more, in remote sensing imagery. But the kind of mapping I was most interested in was thematic mapping. I was mostly interested in computer graphics and animation, but I could also see the allure of bending cartography to serve creative means. For my senior project I converted a digital USGS topographic map of Santa Barbara into a 3D model so I could fly a camera over the terrain as a logo rose from behind the foothills. It was used as an intro animation for videos made for the newly formed National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA). This was, after all, the real focus of the geography department – and the U.S. government. The influential chief geographer for the U.S. State Department from the 1920s through the 1940s, Samuel Whittemore Boggs, had settled on this cartographic dichotomy I was experiencing as a student. He surmised maps could be either rhetorical tools of delusion and propaganda (like fancy 3D animated video bumpers) or scientific instruments of knowledge and understanding (like Geographical Information Science). These two sides of a single coin were present 40-odd years later as I was studying geography at UCSB.By the time I was studying cartography as an undergrad the Cold War was well embedded into the culture of all Americans, including institutions and universities. Some of my youngest memories as a kid were nuclear fallout drills at school. They weren’t all that different from tornado drills common to Iowa kids, but the films they showed us of the effects of nuclear blasts made me wish tornados were our only worry.I also have memories of propaganda making its way into our school work as well. I remember math problems that compared missile lengthy between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. – a nod to male anatomical one-upmanship. Our culture was infused with geopolitical agendas and competitions pitting Americans against Soviets. I recall the ‘Miracle on Ice’ when the U.S. hockey team unexpectedly beat the U.S.S.R. in the 1980 Olympics. That was when the U-S-A chant was popularized. I was 15 and remember having a basketball game that day. The gym was electric with pride. We all lived under constant fear and threat that the Soviet government could launch an intercontinental ballistic missile at any minute, so anything that felt like a victory was celebrated. The fear was all well communicated and orchestrated using cartohypnotic techniques Boggs had warned of. This fear mongering wasn’t unique to the United States. University of Richmond professor Timothy Barney writes, “An ominous arrow-filled 1970 map forecasts the logistics of a Greece and Turkey invasion, while another encircles Denmark and Northern Europe. The secret Warsaw Pact exercise ‘Seven Days Over the River Rhine’ from 1979 used cartography extensively to chart, complete with red mushroom clouds strewn about the continent, an all-too probable nuclear clash between Cold War powers.”The United States has a long history and practice of thematic political cartography dating back to the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. This inspired the formation of a thematic mapping division in the State Department. After World War II, in concert with the Department of Defense, Cold War propaganda elevated to a new level — including in cartography. It was cartohypnosis through government sponsored osmosis that created widespread prognosis of Soviet-American neurosis. When Ronald Reagan became president in 1980, he had campaigned on increased military spending to ward off what he believed to be encroaching communism and military threat from the U.S.S.R. Reagan’s Secretary of Defense was his California friend, businessman, and politician Casper Weinberger, or ‘Cap’ as he was called. Weinberger shared the same fear Reagan did over evidence that cash-starved Russia was pouring much of their GDP into military spending. To convince the American public that Reagan’s so-called ‘small government’ required ‘big spending’ on defense, he pulled a page from the 1918 State Department assembling a team of researchers, artists, illustrators, and cartographers to build his own ‘Inquiry’ into Soviet military weaponry and strategies. They produced a 100-page pamphlet called ‘Soviet Military Power’ out of the U.S. Defense Department that was intended to ‘alert’ the public to the ‘threat’ of the Soviet Union and the Soviet Armed Forces.  The first publications were distributed in 1981 across the country and were sold in Post Offices for $6.50 or $20 today. These were printed every year from 1981 to 1991 as what some government officials refer to as ‘public diplomacy’. However, scholars use ‘public diplomacy’ and ‘propaganda’ interchangeably because it’s often hard to discern which is which. The fact is, these publications worked. They were a perfect compliment to Reagan’s public speeches that routinely referred to his Reagan Doctrine which was “to defy Soviet-supported aggression and secure rights which have been ours from birth.” This included funding overt and covert anti-communist resistance groups around the world – many of which illegally used acts of terror. The Iran–Contra affair provided ample evidence of the malicious intents and actions behind Reagan’s Doctrine – funneling money from Iranian missile sales to fund militant guerilla fighters overthrowing the government in Nicaragua. Fourteen people in Reagan’s administration were indicted. Weinberger was indicted on five felony charges including accusations he lied to Congress and obstruction of investigation. Another four charges were brought against him but his cases were never tried. He was pardoned by then President George H. W. Bush, Reagan’s former Vice President. Many of these sovereign nations the United States involved themselves in were seeking independence from reliance on foreign powers like the U.S. and the Soviet Union. However, because their forms of government often leaned toward social and communal inspired governments, Reagan assumed they’d fall under the control of the communist Soviet Union. It also meant Western corporations could lose out to state sponsored corporations. The U.S. State Department had been attempting to spread Western economic and political propaganda around the world from at least the 1950s. President Truman’s Point Four Program (funded by the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations) and the Chicago Boys (programs involving neoliberal University of Chicago economists, including Milton Friedman) were efforts to spread right-wing libertarianism around the world. That included backing a military dictatorship in Chile.REVERSING CARTOHYPNOSISBy the 1980s these strategies helped instill fear in Americans that the Soviet Union could one day envelope the world. Decades of claims that communism spreads like a disease – Latin America today, Anglo America tomorrow – laid the groundwork in the 1980s for the ‘Soviet Military Power’ propaganda publications to have maximum impact. The fear in many is still there to this day and is heightened by Putin’s aggression via the Kremlin. Another example of an imperialist state department aggressively meddling in the business of a sovereign nation seeking their independence from an all-powerful overlord.Author Tom Gervasi spent years in the late 80s researching the government’s claims made in these publications. He read the CIA’s annual reports to Congress, Military Posture Statements of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, sworn testimony from chiefs of the military services and Defense Department officials before the Armed Services and Appropriations Committees of Congress, as well as documents provided by NATO governments. He also consulted the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, the Union of Concerned Scientists, the Federation of American Scientists, and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. In 1988 he republished the 1987 issue of Weinberger’s ‘Soviet Military Power’ with annotations in the margins debunking many claims made by the U.S. State and Defense Departments. He also highlighted salient examples and techniques of propaganda, including cartohypnotic maps. One shows the land mass connecting Europe with the former Soviet Union. The Soviet territory is covered with a blue blob overlaying its boundaries. Flowing south into Europe are massive arrows encroaching on Europe. The map gives the impression the U.S.S.R. not only has the opportunity to expand by land into all of Europe but that they also have the means to do so and a plan to do it.Gervasi comments in the margins asking us to “Imagine opening a book and seeing the arrows going the other way, thrusting deep into the Soviet Union. The average American or West European reader would feel surprised and quite possibly indignant, finding it a complete misrepresentation of our intentions. That is how the average Soviet citizen would feel opening this book to this page. But this is powerful propaganda, immediately imprinting on our memory the vision of one possibility, without imprinting the reverse possibility, and so reinforcing allegations of Soviet intent made repeatedly, without any evidence to support them.”And in echoes of Boggs’ suggestion that cartohypnosis can be reversed, Gervasi reminds us that “Indeed, images like the ones below are so deeply ingrained in the American psyche that if the propagandists can ever be silenced, it will take several decades of raising clear-sighted new generations to erase all our artificial fears and suspicions of the USSR.”Another map shows the entirety of the former U.S.S.R. in a simple outline with radiant cones stretched in every direction emanating from Moscow and other major cities. The title of the map is Ballistic Missile Early Warning, Target-Tracking, and Battle Management Radars. It suggests the U.S.S.R. had advanced radar systems ready to defend against attack.Gervasi notes, “This may give the impression that only the Soviets have such radars. A splendid map could be drawn of the U.S. radar system, stretching from Scotland to Hawaii, including the 12 large phased-array radars of our Ballistic Missile Early Warning System, the four large phased-array radars of our PAVE, PAWS system, the 75 radars of our DEW Line and North Warning System, our Perimeter Acquisition Radar Attack Characterization System, the three radars of our Navy’s Space Surveillance System, the 16 radars of our Air Force Spacetrack and other systems, and of course, our over-the-horizon backscatter radars. All of these are already fully operational, whereas the Soviet system shown here, as the text below acknowledges, will not be operational until the mid-1990s at the earliest.”Gervasi isn’t the only one to critique claims made in these publications. Even the conservative think-tank, The National Interest, debunks the ‘Pentagon’s exaggerations’ made in the these publications. In 2016 they took aim at what became Reagan and Weinberger’s pride and joy, the Strategic Defense Initiative – or as its was commonly referred to as, Star Wars. This was a space and ground-based laser program envisioned to obliterate threatening Soviet nuclear missiles. They write that Weinberger’s,“Soviet Military Power made ominous predictions about Soviet lasers, lasers powerful enough to shoot down incoming nuclear missiles, or disable satellites in orbit…[the publication stated] ‘in the late 1980s, (the Soviet Union) could have prototype space-based laser weapons for use against satellites.’ It went on to imply that there were working anti-satellite lasers at [a] Soviet research complex…”In 1989 a group of Americans, including engineers and physicists, visited this research site. They concluded the Soviets could only produce a two-kilowatt laser beam. For comparison, experts claim 250 kilowatts are needed to destroy a weapon. It took until last year, 2021, for the U.S. to demonstrate a 300 kilowatt laser weapon. But means to consistently control this device keep it from being deployed. The representative from Virginia, Jim Olin, a former electrical engineer at GE was on that tour in 1989 and said, “It seems to me it pretty clearly is not a power laser and doesn’t represent any threat as a weapon.”In 1942, the librarian at the American Geographical Society, John Kirtland Wright, who is an authority on the history of geography, wrote on the power of maps: “Like bombers and submarines, maps are indispensable instruments of war. In the light of the information they provide, momentous strategic decisions are being made today: ships and planes, men and munitions, are being moved. Maps help to form public opinion and build public morale. When the war is over, they will contribute to shaping the thought and action of those responsible for the reconstruction of a shattered world. Hence it is important in these times that the nature of the information they set forth should be well understood.”We live in a time when someone can go to their favorite search engine, type ‘map of Bering Straight’, copy and paste the image into an image editor, type in big red letters “RUSSIA” on one side of the maritime border and “USA” on the other, and voila…a map made to persuade public opinion. They can then feed it into the social media mass distribution machine and off it goes through a global network to be seen by more eyeballs than Casper Weinberger and Ronald Reagan could ever have imagined. If Boggs thought maps could be weaponized as hypnotic mind benders in the 1940s, imagine what he’d say now? We’ve reached a point where making your own map has never been more accessible. And it’s only going to get easier. I’ve dwelled on the negative aspects of maps as propaganda, but I’m inspired by Boggs’ notion of reverse cartohypnosis. The threat of physical war has never been more real than it is today as the West continues to push an unpredictable dictator into a corner. A corner defined on territorial maps drawn in 1919 by American’s that defined boundaries between Russia and Ukraine. Maps that were made to persuade. Putin is a man deluded by attachments to past maps that drew borders around a union of socialist republics. He has grown hateful of those who challenge that past, him, or his beliefs. His delusions are so grand that he may only be satisfied when he ‘wins’ or everyone else ‘looses’.Like Biden and most presidents before him, he is both a victim of and an contributor to decades of cartohypnotism and through waring propaganda between two super powers seeking imperial domination. With maps as weapons of war in an global battle for information superiority, I ask that we check our own delusions, aversions, and desires before becoming entranced by the seduction of a map. Arm our self-made mental radar and defense systems that warn us of intentions to exaggerate, placate, and sedate our vulnerability to bombs of persuasion. And should we decide to become a cartographer and make our own map one day, make sure we’re doing our best to reverse the effect of cartohypnosis. This is a public episode. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 5th October. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to new PATREON PRODUCER JEREMY WARNER RECORD SHARE FOR WESTERN EUROPEAN EV REGISTRATIONS IN SEPTEMBER "The monthly share of new zero-emission BEV (Battery electric vehicle) passenger car registrations as a percentage of the total new car market achieved a new high in September. 15.3 per cent of all the new  passenger cars entering West European roads during the closing month of the third quarter, were pure electric passenger cars, according to exclusive data published each month in Schmidt Automotive Research's in-depth monthly European Electric Car Data Trend Report." Matthias Schmidt writes: "Just under 136 thousand new pure electric cars entered the 18 market West European region monitored by the report each month. Despite volumes falling 30 thousand short of the all-time monthly volume high, recorded in December 2020, as passenger car manufacturers made a last-ditch attempt to meet newly phased-in CO2 fleet emission targets, achieving a 15.1 BEV per cent mix of the total market, the September BEV penetration of the 18-market region saw levels surpass that. A number of reasons impacted the new record in September, namely; the boost from Tesla's end of quarter volumes, achieving a monthly record of 34,000 units, or every fourth BEV – boosted by both the Model Y introduction and shipments from China –  as well as the semiconductor situation deflating the total passenger car market." https://www.schmidtmatthias.de/post/western-european-zero-emission-passenger-car-registrations-achieved-a-new-record-share-in-september U.S. SALES UPDATES: ID.4, VOLVO, PORSCHE TAYCAN, MUSTANG MACH-E All from InsideEVs:  "Volkswagen ID.4, sales improved slightly from 5,756 in Q2 to 6,049 in Q3, which probably will further increase over the next quarters. The ID.4 share out of the total Volkswagen sales was 7.6%. The company notes that its data indicates that more than two-thirds of ID.4 customers are switching from other brands." "The Volvo Recharge plug-in sub-brand accounted for about 18.2% of the total volume, which is about 1,700 units. In California, the share increased to a record high 52% so the company sells more plug-ins than non-plug-ins there. We estimate that the total plug-in volume in Q3 was 5,960. Volvo's Recharge lineup is currently comprised of a total of seven models, two all-electric (the C40 is coming soon) and five plug-in hybrids. By 2030, all Volvo models wiil become be completely electric. In 2022, the company plans to launch the electric successor of the XC90, based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2), that will be produced in Ridgeville, South Carolina, together with the Polestar 3, also based on the SPA2." "The Taycan/Taycan Cross Turismo (all versions) sales increased marginally, by 0.2% year-over-year to 1,861, far behind the outstanding Q2 result, but enough to remain the third best selling Porsche model. The all-electric Porsche stands for nearly 12.2% of all Porsche sales during the period. Porsche's BEV lineup currently consists a total of nine Taycan/Taycan Cross Turismo versions:" "In the case of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, in September sales amounted to 1,578 (1.1% of Ford's total result) - below the monthly average so far this year. The total volume in the Q3 was 5,880. "Mustang Mach-E retail sales expanded 9.2 percent in September. With 18,855 Mach-Es sold through September, Mach-E ranks second in full electric SUV sales behind Tesla's Model Y. Over-the-air modem activation rates for Mach-E are the highest in Ford's portfolio at 97 percent." The gross stock of Mach-E is at about 5,000 in the U.S. (at dealerships and in transport, we assume). That's two times more than the 2,600 we noted in August." https://insideevs.com/news/538003/us-volkswagen-id4-sales-2021q3 https://insideevs.com/news/538106/us-volvo-recharge-sales-september2021 https://insideevs.com/news/538000/us-porsche-taycan-sales-2021q3 https://insideevs.com/news/538343/us-ford-mache-sales-2021q3/ 800 VOLT CHARGING GOING MAINSTREAM "Porsche designed the Taycan to also be compatible with the existing 400 V DC fast-charging infrastructure. The car comes with 50 kW capability as standard, with a 150 kW unit as an option GM, with its wide ranging product lineup is designing the Ultium modular electric powertrain so that it can underpin both 400 V and 800 V applications. So while most vehicles will initially have 400 V battery packs capable of fast-charging up to 200 kW, the larger truck platform on which the GMC Hummer is built, will support 800 V with a 350 kW fast-charging capability." says Electronics 360: "Another mainstream, high-volume brand already planning to implement the 800 V powernet is Hyundai. The recently announced Ioniq 5, based on the new and dedicated E-GMP EV platform, will have an 800 V architecture that can be charged at 232 kW. Confirming the growing interest in 800 V charging, power electronics suppliers Delphi Technologies and Hitachi have both developed 800 V inverters. Delphi claiming that it will be supplying its 800 V “Viper” inverter to three out of the top four global premium automakers by 2024." https://electronics360.globalspec.com/article/17190/will-800-v-charging-become-the-ev-industry-norm CITROEN SAYS IT HAS ALREADY TAKEN MORE THAN 1,000 ORDERS FOR AMI "With the fuel delivery crisis still rumbling on and petrol prices expected to rise by around 5p-a-litre in the coming days, more drivers are reportedly considering buying an electric vehicle. The latest EV due to hit the market next year is Citroen's diminutive Ami, which is as long as a standard UK parking space is wide and has a range of just 46 miles." according to thisismoney: "The French maker, having confirmed that it will sell the tiny battery model in Britain from 2022 just a fortnight ago, says it has already taken over 1,000 reservations online. A total of 1,130 pre-orders have been placed on the car company's UK website, which requires a £250 deposit that is refunded if the driver changes their mind. The Ami uses a 5.5kWh battery that recharges in three hours from a conventional domestic socket.  This provides a top speed of just 28mph and a claimed range of 46 miles." https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-10056649/Citroen-says-taken-1-000-orders-6-000-Ami-EV.html?utm_source=pocket_mylist VOLVO CARS IS COMPLETING PLANS FOR IPO IN STOCKHOLM "Volvo Cars, the Swedish auto maker owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. of China, is completing plans for an initial public offering and is set to announce details of the listing as early as Monday, in a deal that could value the car maker at as much as $25 billion, according to people familiar with the matter." says WSJ.com: "A listing, if it goes ahead, would represent one of the car industry's most dramatic turnarounds. Ford Motor Co. , weakened by the global financial crisis, sold the Swedish company to Geely for $1.8 billion in 2010." https://www.wsj.com/articles/volvo-cars-is-finalizing-plans-for-ipo-in-stockholm-11633283394 ELECTRIC CAR SALES COULD 'REDUCE ENERGY BILLS' FOR ALL UK CONSUMERS "ELECTRIC car sales could reduce energy bills for everyone across the UK, according to a new report from Ofgem.  They have predicted a high number of electric cars could reduce costs for all bill payers, including non EV owners. They said EV's will allow the electricity network to work better which would then reduce average costs." writes the Express: "Ofgem said the market was currently trying to introduce products and services tailored specifically towards electric car owners. These EV tariffs offer cheaper rates overnight to encourage owners to charge their car at off-peak periods. However, they said energy supply was increasingly being bundled in with electric car services." “We believe that high numbers of EVs on the system could reduce total costs of energy for everyone, even non EV owners, particularly if [it] is the norm that EVs charge in ‘off-peak' hours, using smart charging. EV owners are expected to benefit from cheaper running costs of EVs compared to petrol or diesel vehicles, but non-EV owners will also benefit. This is because EVs will enable a better utilisation of the electricity network and generation assets, thereby reducing unit costs.” https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/cars/1500116/electric-cars-sales-energy-bills-savings-ofgem-report-uk GERMANY'S BMVI OPENS TENDER PROCESS FOR NATIONAL FAST-CHARGING NETWORK "Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) opened the tender process for the national fast-charging network: Deutschlandnetz. Companies and company consortia can compete for the bid to set up and operate around 900 fast-charging locations throughout Germany. (Earlier post.)" says Green Car Congres: "The Germany network is intended to ensure the basic supply with fast charging infrastructure in medium and long-haul traffic with around 8,000 additional fast charging points. It complements the already existing large fast-charging locations and thus ensures a nationwide and needs-based fast-charging infrastructure throughout Germany. In a second tender, the construction and operation of around 200 fast-charging locations at unmanaged rest areas on the federal motorways will be tendered. The tendering of the nationwide motorway lots will be carried out in autumn by the Autobahn GmbH." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/10/20211004-bmvi.html HUMMER EV DRIVEN BY TOM MOLOUGHNEY https://insideevs.com/reviews/538170/hummer-ev-first-drive-review/ 80 ACTIVISTS BLOCK SHELL'S PORT TO PROTEST AGAINST ‘GREENWASHING' ADVERTS https://www.euronews.com/green/2021/10/04/climate-ngos-launch-campaign-to-ban-fossil-fuel-adverts-in-the-eu NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Returns on Sunday 10th October! But 16,000 EVs out of 1.2 million is just a drop in the bucket. Drive Electric Week kicks off today to accelerate EV adoption." Ryan Kawailani Ozawa @hawaii 'THE BUTTON' ARRIVES "After months of waiting, Tesla owners who wish to take part in the company's FSD Beta program could now formally request the advanced driver-assist system to be loaded into their vehicle. The release of the “Request FSD Beta” button comes before the rollout of FSD Beta 10.1, which is expected to be distributed to the company's testers over the weekend." says Teslarati.com: "Similar to the FSD Beta program that has initially been released to the company's first batch of testers last October, Tesla made it a serious point to highlight that safety must be paramount when using the advanced driver-assist system. This could be seen in the heavy emphasis on cautious driving that the company references in its recent update, as well as the use of Safety Scores to determine which drivers are eligible for the program. Tesla also made it clear that access to the advanced driver-assist system could be revoked at any time. " Read more: https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-fsd-beta-wide-release-notes "You can now request early access to Full Self-Driving Beta pending eligibility. To get started, tap ‘Controls'>' Autopilot'>Request Full Self-Driving Beta' and follow the instructions.” “Thank you for your interest in limited early access Full Self-Driving Beta! The Tesla team is analyzing your vehicle driving data and Safety Score to determine eligibility. You can view your Safety Score from the Tesla app at any time (version 4.1.0 or newer). If eligible, you will receive a software update as part of the limited early access,” Tesla wrote, adding that owners also have the option to opt-out of the FSD Beta test program.  "The move delighted fans of CEO Elon Musk and Tesla, but it risks drawing the ire of federal vehicle safety authorities who are already investigating the automaker for possible safety defects in its driver-assistance systems." reported CNBC yesterday: "FSD Beta is an unfinished version of Tesla's premium driver-assistance software, FSD, which the company sells in the U.S. for $10,000 upfront, or $199 a month. The company previously made FSD Beta available to about 2,000 people, a mix of mostly employees and some customers, who test it out on public roads even though the software hasn't been debugged. Tesla's systems tabulate a drivers': “Predicted Collision Frequency, Forward Collision Warning per 1,000 Miles, Hard Braking, Aggressive Turning, Unsafe Following Time, and Forced Autopilot Disengagements" If you're a good boy or girl after 7 days, Tesla will review their decision and you may get access. Tesla develops in shorter processes, works closer with the best in the industry and takes more risk," Diess, a known admirer of the electric car pioneer led by Elon Musk, said. Wolfsburg-based Volkswagen, Europe's largest carmaker, aims to overtake Tesla as the world's top seller of electric cars by 2025, a claim that is underscored by an ambitious plan to build six large battery factories in Europe by 2030." In just seven years, the company was able to install more than 1,000 stalls in one city to increase people's commitment to electric vehicles." writes the Tesla fan blog Tesmanian: "Tesla in China achieved another major milestone. @JayinShanghai/Twitter shared the good news: Tesla has installed the 100th Supercharger station in Shanghai. He announced that the Grand Opening Ceremony will take place on September 29. The new Supercharger station is installed at Shanghai Landmark Rafael Sky City." We already know the iX is in production and when we attended IAA Mobility 2021, we saw dozens and dozens of them in and around the venue." says InsideEVs: "BMW offers the iX in xDrive 40 and xDrive 50 guises, with either 240 kW (321 hp) or 385 kW (516 hp) respectively. The first has a 76.6 kWh battery pack (71 kWh usable capacity) and a claimed WLTP range of 425 km (264 miles), with the more powerful version featuring a 111.5 kWh pack (105.2 kWh usable); range is rated at 630 km (391 miles) WLTP. Pricing for the iX in Germany starts at €77,300 for the xDrive 40 model." We wrote that based on a report from WhichCar, who had spoken to BMW i4 Project Leader, David Ferrufino about the subject. According to the WhichCar article, Ferrufino claimed that “BMW electric vehicle range to remain capped at 600km” and that the charging infrastructure was more important. However, since then, we've talked to a spokesperson from BMW who tells us that there was never a 600 km range cap. We don't have the details of the original conversation, but allegedly the miscommunication was on BMW's part." writes BMWBlog: "From what we're told, the 600 km range – on WLTP and 300 miles on EPA – was the target number for both the BMW i4 and BMW iX during their development." The BMW Communications Team in Munich: “The BMW Group will not stop to further develop the electric range of their battery-electric vehicle portfolio. The BMW iX and BMW i4 are the first fully-electric models within the BMW portfolio to allow for a range of around 600km in WLTP and every day driving. Thereby they fulfill exactly the target range which had been set for their individual market segments. And the story doesn't end here: The BMW Group will continue pushing the boundaries of all aspects of electric driving. This applies in particular to further increasing ranges and higher charging speeds, depending on the individual model.” Read more: https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/09/25/update-bmw-says-no-electric-range-cap-on-its-future-electric-vehicles/ GERMAN RESEARCHERS CONVERTED A TESLA MODEL Y INTO A HYDROGEN CAR "On Wednesday, German Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek revealed an automotive Frankenstein creation: A Tesla Model Y that had been converted into a hydrogen vehicle that she called a “hyper hybrid." says futurism.com: "The actual “hyper hybrid” Tesla was meant to represent the concepts behind hydrogen fuel more so than to become a street-ready vehicle. The Carbon2Chem initiative, which aims to decarbonize the steel industry, designed the car to demonstrate new ways to save energy and recycle fuel". https://futurism.com/the-byte/converted-tesla-hydrogen-car DAIMLER TAKES A 33% STAKE IN AUTOMOTIVE CELLS COMPANY "Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler has taken a 33% equity stake in French battery manufacturer Automotive Cells Company (ACC) together with automaker Stellantis and French petroleum giant TotalEnergies. Each company will hold an equal 33% stake in ACC. " reports FutrueCar: "As Mercedes Benz ramps up the production of electric vehicles and transitions to becoming an electric-only automaker by the end of the decade, ACC will help the company to scale up development and production of next-generation high-performance battery cells and modules. ACC was founded in 2020 and aims to become the European leader of electric vehicle batteries. The investments from Dailmer, Stellantis and TotalEnergies bring together the additional expertise of three major companies, with highly complementary skills.  Daimler said in July that more than 90% of future Mercedes-Benz electric models will be built with a common battery platform with standardized interfaces. Now, a large portion of EU recovery funds – 4.3 billion euros ($5.1 billion USD) – will reportedly go toward a Spanish EV investment that aims to ramp up electric vehicle and battery production in the country, according to Reuters.   - The EV investment is part of a broader 13 billion euro incentive geared toward sustainable transportation, which is expected to grow by five percent by 2030. Spanish officials expect that government initiatives will increase the number of EVs registered in the country from 18,000 in 2020 to 250,000 in 2023, create 140,000 new jobs   - the European Union is reportedly planning on tightening its emissions standards in the coming weeks that will effectively result in a new ICE vehicle ban by the year 2030.   Original Source : https://fordauthority.com/2021/07/spanish-ev-investment-could-bolster-fords-european-ambitions/   ONE MILLION NEW ELECTRIC PLUG-IN CARS JOINED EUROPEAN ROADS DURING 2021'S FIRST-HALF   - 2021's first half saw one million new plug-in passenger cars join European roads, the first 6-month period over 1 million  Almost every fifth (17.2%) passenger car was a plug-in during the opening half PHEVs accounted for the majority (52.2%) of plug-in volumes in the 6-month periodEvery fifth (20.1%) new passenger car in June alone was a plug-in12-month-rolling cumulative BEV-only volume trend (Jul '20 - Jun '21) just below 1M   - During the most recent quarter, Q2 2021, 564,000 plug-ins were registered according to Schmidt Automotive Research data, with BEV volumes outpacing PHEVs in the second quarter with 284,000 and 280,000 volumes respectively   - The report expects 2.05m plug-in passenger cars to enter West European roads during 2021 with the penetration expected to remain modest up to 2025 when the next CO2 fleet average cut will enter into force and manufacturers use this window to push ICE models to finance their electric transition.   - The European Commission will propose, July 14th, a new CO2 roadmap and targets for 2030 (currently 37.5 per cent reduction over 2021 levels). The average emissions from new passenger cars in 2020 across the EU27, UK, Iceland and Norway was 107.8g/km NEDC-BT according to provisional EEA data.   Original Source : https://www.schmidtmatthias.de/post/one-million-new-electric-plug-in-cars-joined-european-roads-during-2021-s-first-half   FEDERAL GOV BLOCKS COLORADO ADDING EV CHARGERS TO REST AREAS   - Sometime in the near future, Colorado Department of Transportation officials would like for you to be able to pull over at one of its rest areas and charge your electric vehicle. But federal law that prevents the commercialization of interstate right-of-ways — including rest areas, park-and-rides, and similar facilities across the country — is preventing that. A change to that law, which has CDOT's support, is part of the $715 billion transportation bill the U.S. House passed last week.   - The existing federal law dates back to the early 1960s and was intended to protect and promote private businesses — gas stations and the like — along highways. The federal government cited it in turning down a state plan to add charging stations to the Burlington Welcome Center on the Eastern Plains, CDOT officials said in a letter to the state's U.S. House delegation.   - The House bill containing the law change now moves to the Senate, which is considering its own transportation proposal. How differences between the two will be reconciled remains unclear so far. The White House has been supportive of both, the Washington Post reported.   Original Source : https://coloradosun.com/2021/07/12/electric-vehicle-charging-interstate-highway-colorado-rules/   TESLA MODEL Y IS HOT BUT THE CHEVY BOLT EV IS A STEAL: DEALS ALERT   - There is a major model year update for 2022: the existing Bolt is getting a makeover and Chevy is introducing the all-new Bolt EUV.   That's why you're seeing 2021 Bolts priced to move.   But what's different this time is, pricing on the 2022 Bolt is a lot lower, starting at $31,995. That's roughly $5,500 off the MSRP for the current base model. And the slightly larger 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, starts at $33,995.  The 2022 Bolts will include options such as adaptive cruise control and GM's Super Cruise (hands-free-driving) tech — both firsts for the Bolt.   Original Source : https://www.forbes.com/sites/brookecrothers/2021/07/11/tesla-model-y-is-hot-but-the-chevy-bolt-ev-is-cheap-deals-alert/   OLA ELECTRIC RAISED $100 MILLION OF DEBT FROM BANK OF BARODA   - Ola Electric, the electric vehicles (EV) focused arm of ride hailing giant Ola, has raised $100 million   - Ola Electric will be looking to enter electric scooter manufacturing and selling.   - The factory will spread across 500-acres and the company hopes to make 10 million vehicles annually. The company aims to manufacture 15% of the world's e-scooters by summer of 2022 and will also be looking to export these scooters.   - Ola Electric's EV manufacturing plant is said to be the largest in the world. ANI Technologies' chief executive Bhavish Aggarwal announced, last month, that Ola Electric's scooter factory is nearing completion and the company expects to start rolling out vehicles soon.   Original Source : https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/ola-electric-has-raised-100-million-in-debt-to-start-producing-its-electric-scooters-soon/articleshow/84338315.cms   DRAGTIMES TAKES TESLA PLAID MODEL S ON TRACK   - “We have Plaid Mode on. We turn on Drag Strip Mode. What that does is it lights up the Drag Strip Mode here and says, ‘conditioning for peak power performance.' From past experience, this only takes two to three minutes. Gone are the days of the previous Teslas which are taking 40–45 minutes, draining the battery down before you get that run.”   - Brooks explained that the best run was 9.24, which was a tie with the current record set by Jay Leno. Their best numbers are as follows:   0–60 mph: 2.01 seconds 0–100 km/h: 2.11 seconds 0–100 mph: 4:19 seconds 0–130 mph: 6.99 seconds 0–150 mph: 9.17 seconds   Original Source : https://cleantechnica.com/2021/07/12/dragtimes-takes-tesla-plaid-model-s-for-performance-testing/   A REPAIR WOULD COST $16,000 AT TESLA: THE ELECTRIFIED GARAGE DID IT FOR $700   - Donald Bone drove over some debris on the road, and something broke in his Model 3. The coolant leaked, and he was worried. Tesla told him Bone could drive to a Service Center. He took the car to one, and they detected the vehicle had a broken port. When Bone thought the repair would cost $800, he received news that he would have to pay $16,000 to replace the entire battery pack.   - His car did not have comprehensive coverage because he just switched his former car with the Model 3, and his insurance company did not want to pay for the repair. Without options, Bone asked for help in Tesla forums, and someone told him about the Electrified Garage.   - The bottom line is that Tesla Service Centers do not perform part replacements, just assembly replacements. In other words, if something small breaks or has to be replaced, they replace the whole module that includes it.   - As Bone said, he had the right to keep his old battery pack if he had paid $16,000 for a new one, something that the Service Center was not very willing to accept.   Original Source : https://www.autoevolution.com/news/a-repair-would-cost-16000-at-tesla-the-electrified-garage-did-it-for-700-165107.html   WHY TCO IS THE FINAL INCENTIVE FOR FLEET ELECTRIFICATION   - When and where vehicles are charged can have a significant impact on the total cost of ownership for an electric fleet, writes ChargePoint's Alain Costa   - whilst fleets have spent over a century perfecting the simple infrastructure needed to store and distribute ICE fuel, the move to EVs requires entirely new infrastructure. This needs to be thought through: fleets cannot merely install a few sockets and hope for the best. A thorough understanding of the fleet's needs, use cases and deployment is required. Businesses must ask themselves: will vehicles charge only overnight at the depot, or will they be taken home by drivers and charged there? Will these vehicles often drive beyond their range, meaning public or ultra-fast DC charging will be needed for a quick turnaround at the depot?   - Early adopters of EV fleets have already realised the 20-25% cost savings that come from greater efficiency, more affordable fuelling and reduced maintenance, putting themselves in a pole position for expansion as more vehicles become available and the policy environment moves further towards electrification.   Original Source : https://www.automotiveworld.com/articles/why-tco-is-the-final-incentive-for-fleet-electrification   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   What's your ideal stop time on a long distance road trip? Olivia and Raven share their thoughts and experiences regarding black history education in schools, the Eurocentric focus in history and humanities courses, and problems with, and ways to improve black history education. Discussion Summary 00:32: There's a difference in how West European cultures and black and other cultures are taught about in the classroom. 02:44: Disparities in the way European and black history is covered, and what's historically important to white people is not what's historically significant to black people. 07:48: Teaching black history in a way that prioritizes white people's feelings, and many major events in black history aren't talked about in the classroom. 12:39: Differences in how black people and white people are depicted in education, and why the way our history is taught affects the way we think of ourselves and how others see us. #18:04: Statistics on black history education, and reasons to expand history curricula. 25:13: The 1776 commission, if teaching history accurately can tarnish the image of the US, and promoting history education from the Eurocentric perspective. 33:59: Tokenism in black history education, black history class is an insufficient solution on its own for increasing education, and disinterest in and problems with courses. 37:49: Using your voice to improve the way black history education is implemented. 41:27: Outro.   References: Ivan Van Sertima They Came Before Columbus: The African Presence in Ancient America (Journal of African Civilizations) Ethnic studies can't make up for whitewashed history in classrooms ‘The Humanity of Blackness' Missing From History Classes: How to Transform Black History Education   Social media: Twitter @I_squaredpod, our Facebook page, and our public Facebook group, Intersectional Insights. The report expects Tesla to regain traction in 2021, with its market share set to return to closer to 20 per cent by the end of the year. Its 12-month running peak was 31 per cent at the end of 2019 according to the report. VW Group led the way in the 12-month period up to and including March 2021 with 23 per cent share of the total BEV market.      - German xEV passengers cars in circulation (Parc) remain on course to be the first European market to hit the 1 million mark before by the end of this summer and just before German Chancellor Merkel departs her post, securing her electric legacy, all be it one year behind the government's original target.   - SUV/Crossovers remained the largest BEV car sector.   - The total West European 12-month BEV cumulative total up to and including March 2021 was 0.8 million units, with the 1 million 12-month cumulative mark expected to be reached this summer. The BEV share of the total market over the same period was 7.4 per cent.   https://www.schmidtmatthias.de/post/q1-2021-west-european-electric-car-market-report   From Jose Pontes: "#1 Tesla Model 3 – The sports sedan returned to form, by delivering 24,184 deliveries last month, a larger than expected high tide, allowing it to register 4 times more units than the runner-up Hyundai Kona EV. Regarding March, the Model 3 hade several 4-digit scores, namely in the United Kingdom (6,500 units), France (4,524), Germany (3,699), Norway (2,169), Italy (1,363) and Sweden and Austria, both with 1,192 units each."   http://ev-sales.blogspot.com/2021/04/europe-march-2021.html   But compare to January: http://ev-sales.blogspot.com/2021/02/europe-january-2021.html   SEE JESS BEZOS DRIVING A RIVIAN R1T   https://twitter.com/blueorigin/status/1387763989917151234 https://cdn.motor1.com/images/mgl/7nrK1/s1/blue-origin-s-rivian-r1t-driven-by-jeff-bezos.jpg https://cdn.motor1.com/images/mgl/kvyrn/s1/blue-origin-s-rivian-r1t-driven-by-jeff-bezos.jpg   CHARGING INDEX PLACES MERCEDES IN FIRST PLACE   "The victory of the Mercedes EQS is no coincidence and is based on several factors. For example, the EQS has the largest net capacity at 107.8 kWh. The battery of the Tesla Model S P100D still contains a lush 95 kWh. The Porsche Taycan comes in at 83.7 kWh. A lot helps a lot. The buyers of the Mercedes can draw on the full capacity." says electrive: "At the same time, the power consumption of the EQS is low on the motorway, thanks to good aerodynamics. The drag coefficient of cW=0.20 and the frontal area of 2.51 square metres result in a cA value of 0.5. With battery-electric cars that have a poor cA value, long-distance suitability suffers. This applies above all to SUVs, which have too large a frontal area due to their height. The third essential aspect for progress is the charging power in the defined window from 10 to 80 per cent SOC. All electric cars in the top 10 of the Charging Index have an average of over 100 kW. And the Mercedes EQS, unlike the Porsche Taycan, does not have an 800-volt battery system. But the large capacity enables a peak power of over 200 kW and an average of 164 kW even on a 400-volt basis. "   https://www.electrive.com/2021/04/28/p3-charging-index-places-mercedes-in-first-place/   FORD NEARS DECISION TO LICENSE VW TECH FOR A SECOND EUROPEAN EV "Ford Motor Co. is nearing a decision to license Volkswagen AG’s electric-car technology for a second model to be sold in Europe, people familiar with the matter said, a move that would deepen ties between two of the world’s largest automakers." says The Detroit News: "Ford has already said it plans to produce a car using MEB in Cologne, Germany, from 2023. And they won't be built just from GM-sourced batteries, but by actual GM-employee hands, as confirmed by an Acura spokesperson to The Drive." writes James Gilboy: "Slated to be sold in North America first, these two electric crossovers will, according to a previous report, be built at two separate GM plants. The Honda model will reportedly enter production in 2023 in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, where the Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox are made, and the Acura will allegedly follow in 202 at Spring Hill in Tennessee."   An email to The Drive: ""We are jointly developing two EV SUVs models using GM's Ultium batteries for the North American market as 2024 model year, one for the Honda brand and one for the Acura brand. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   BMW I7 ELECTRIC SEDAN COMING WITH AROUND 650 HORSEPOWER "Spy photos have shown the BMW i7 electric sedan undergoing extensive testing. The camouflage and cladding have hidden a model that’s expected to resemble its gas-powered sibling, though surprises aren’t expected. However, one area BMW could excite is with the i7’s output. The company has yet to make anything official – and likely won’t until the reveal – though a new Autobild report says the sedan could offer 650 horsepower (484 kilowatts)." according to Motor1: "The report also notes that the German automaker will offer a 120-kilowatt-hour battery that’ll give the sedan a range of 700 kilometers (434 miles). Also in the report is the mention of a less-powerful variant with a smaller 80 kWh battery.  The automaker isn’t expected to reveal the new vehicle until sometime next year, as it’ll arrive for the 2023 model year. It’ll compete against the Mercedes EQS, which rumors suggest could receive a high-performance AMG version, too, which would help justify a 650-hp i7 in BMW’s stable. The BMW is also likely to receive a bevy of safety features and semi-self-driving technologies."   https://www.motor1.com/news/485707/bmw-i7-650-horsepower-rumors/   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E U.S. SALES AND PRODUCTION NUMBERS UP IN JANUARY "Ford announced its U.S. production and sales results for the month of January, and as we can see, the ramp-up of the Mustang Mach-E progresses. The company delivered to customers 238 Mach-E, which combined with the first three in December, gives us a total of 241. We can guess that February, or at least March, will be in four digits." according to InsideEVs: "On the production front, the volume is an order of magnitude higher. In January alone, Ford produced 4,250 Mach-E. The cumulative production is at 10,967, but we must take into account that part of it is envisioned for other markets. An important piece of information is also that the number of cars delivered to dealers increased to roughly 5,000."   https://insideevs.com/news/485684/ford-mustang-mache-sales-production-january-2021   RIVIAN'S AMAZON DELIVERY VANS HAVE STARTED MAKING DELIVERIES "Rivian has begun production of its R1S SUV, but the first vehicles to actually make it to the road and be used for their intended purpose are the delivery vans that the EV startup has built for global retail giant Amazon. Amazon has officially begun delivering your orders with these electric vans, ushering in a new age of electric mobility and changing the way that commercial vehicles impact the environment." reports CArBuzz: "These vans will be a common sight on our roads soon, since Amazon has ordered 100,000 of them. Series production of the vehicle will only start sometime next year, and we don't know exactly how many of the 100,000 units Amazon is already making use of, but at this point, it's probably just a handful. For now, the electrified deliveries have started in Los Angeles, but over the course of the year, an additional 15 cities will see the introduction of the new vehicles."   https://carbuzz.com/news/rivians-amazon-delivery-vans-have-started-making-deliveries   TESLA’S SUPERCHARGER PRODUCTION FACILITY IN SHANGHAI GOES ONLINE "Tesla’s Shanghai Supercharger production plant has gone online, the company announced today. Tesla announced that it would begin producing Superchargers in Shanghai at a dedicated plant on November 5th, 2020, with the intention of widening the availability of its charging infrastructure in the country." says Teslarati: "In just over two months since the announcement, the plant is online and producing Tesla-specific charging stalls. Tesla did state that the project was officially erected in August 2020, making it just over five months that the project was completed from start to finish."   TEsla said:" Today, with the strong support of Shanghai governments at all levels and Tesla’s rapid advancement, the Tesla Shanghai Supercharging Pile Factory was officially completed and put into production, representing the industry’s leading third-generation Supercharging pile (V3) was officially off the assembly line”   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-shanghai-supercharger-facility-goes-online/   TESLA UPDATES MODEL Y TIMELINE IN EUROPE "Tesla has updated its Model Y delivery timeline in Europe – hinting that Gigafactory Berlin will start production in “mid-2021.” says electrek: "That’s updated from just “2021,” and it would indicate a start of production in just a few months at Gigafactory Berlin."   "In October last year CEO Elon Musk revealed the Model Y produced at Giga Berlin will be the first to have the integrated battery packs featuring the new 4680 cells. The integrated battery pack would also mean the introduction of single-piece front and rear castings for the electric SUV." ntes Drive TEsla Canada: "That is a lot of new technology to introduce and ramp up in such a short amount of time. Since the targeted date is only about five months away, Tesla could also be planning to import Model Y’s produced at Giga Shanghai. It wouldn’t be the first time it has done something like that as the automaker began exporting Model 3’s to Europe last year."   https://driveteslacanada.ca/model-y/tesla-updates-model-y-design-studio-in-europe-targeting-mid-2021-production/   GENESIS GV70E ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SPIED TESTING FOR THE FIRST TIME "It’s only been a couple of days since a report broke previewing a legion of Genesis EVs to come, but one of our spy shooters has already captured one of those vehicles: the GV70e. Basically, this vehicle is an all-electric version of the GV70 crossover that’s already been revealed." says Autoblog: "A number of visual elements give this tester away as the electric GV70. For starters, there’s the solid grille. The heavy camouflage blocks off a grille that is shaped similarly to the normal GV70, but it’s just a big shield in this case. You can see that a tiny slit was cut in the center for what looks like a camera. This EV seems a good fit for the recently-announced E-GMP electric vehicle platform that will underpin a number of electric Hyundai products. The even-smaller electric Genesis crossover we spied the other day (and many others) will also take advantage of the platform. It’s still unclear when the GV70e will debut, but Hyundai has promised to launch 23 electric vehicles by 2025."   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/03/genesis-gv70e-spied-testing/   LEGISLATION WORKS "With 2020 seeing emission regulations tighten, manufacturers scrambled to meet EU (and Swiss) standards at the close of 2020, contributing to total plug-in registrations exceeding half a million units in the final quarter of the year. 2020 lived up to its claim of being the first genuine year where EVs moved from the slow hanging fruit lane to the mainstream, narrowly failing to miss a pre-COVID forecast of 770,000 units." says electrive: "Thanks to the newly phased-in EU fleet average CO2 targets, European volumes more than doubled last year from previous levels to 727,927 units of fully electric vehicles. PHEVs – a critical strategic tool in meeting the latest fleet average CO2 targets – saw volumes achieve 606,466 units. Combining both plug-in segments, West European sales surpass Chinese new plug-in passenger car registrations last year by 90,000 units to become the world’s largest region for externally rechargeable passenger cars. The start of production from Tesla’s European facility this year is likely to double regional Tesla volumes. Simultaneously, Volkswagen Group’s MEB ramp-up is expected to increase with an annual capacity of 330,000 units expected at the end of 2021. However, full annual capacity is not likely until 2022."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/02/legislation-works-european-electric-car-market-full-year-2020-round-up/   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK Have you seen the social media meme of putting two photo’s side by side and titling them ‘how to started’ and ‘how it’s going’. Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 7:00 PM (PST) Moderator: Dr. Nadeem ul Haque (VC PIDE) Panelists: Salim Raza Dr Arshad Zaman Sikander Khan Istaqbal Mehdi Tasneem Noorani This is the first webinar of the series focusing on the issues attached with the ‘State Owner Enterprises’, or the ‘Public Sector Enterprises’.  Management of Public Enterprises (PEs/ SOEs) globally is a challenging task. Large number of countries both developing and developed, have confronted serious issues in improving the performance of their public enterprises. There have been several experiences of bringing these enterprises at par with their “counterparts in private sector”. However, there were more failures than successes. Keeping in view the low level of operational efficiency and magnitude of complexities Prime Minister of Britain Margaret Thatcher in the 1970s promoted a program to privatize. Subsequently, during the next few decades privatization policy was adopted by large number of countries. Some of them have been successful in privatizing substantial part of their public enterprise sector. Perhaps the greatest success was in East Europe where large number of PEs were successfully privatized. Privatization policy was also adopted by number of West European and Afro-Asian countries but here the results were mixed. Continued Importance of PEs: In the recent years it has been noted that despite all the privatization public enterprise sector continue to be substantially large. The “Economist” of January 11th, 2014 included an expose on the role and size of public sector on the global scene including the OECD countries. It stated” Taxpayers might think that the best family sliver has already been sold, but plenty is still in cupboard. State Owned Enterprises in OECD countries are worth around €2 trillion” However, it was added that if minority stakes in companies dealing with public sector utilities and other assets such as buildings, land and sub-soil resources are taken into account public enterprises in rich economies are worth €35 trillion across the OECD countries. Similar share of public sector role is noted in other countries. It was, therefore, concluded by the Economist “All of which points out to a huge opportunity for governments to sell or sweat more assets and by doing so reduce fiscal stress”.

Welcome to a new Patreon PRODUCER TYLER SCHAEFER   Welcome to a new Patreon EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JOHN SCHROEDER   From Peter Bryn: Greetings. In Washington State, the current legislative session will be considering a ban on ICE vehicle registrations for model years beyond 2030. This bill (House HB 1204 / Senate SB 5256) has been introduced and it's an opportunity for folks to contact their legislators to share their support.   MERCEDES-BENZ EQA TO DEBUT ON JANUARY 20 "Mercedes-Benz has teased today a new image of the interior of the upcoming all-electric compact crossover/SUV EQA model, scheduled for the unveiling on January 20, 2020." says InsideEVs: "This new model (a sister model to GLA), is already in production at the Rastatt plant, Germany and should be available in the European dealerships as early as Spring 2021. In the future, it will be produced also at the Beijing plant, China (for the local market). Mercedes-Benz said that at first there will be introduced the single-motor EQA 250 version with a power output of 140 kW. That's the first number that we got. At a later point there will be additional, more capable versions with power output above 200 kW (the precise value was not disclosed) and all-wheel drive (dual motor). The video presentation to be released on the EQA website at 11:00 a.m. (CET)."   https://insideevs.com/news/466483/mercedesbenz-eqa-debut-january-20/   CHEVY OFFERS 0% FINANCING ON USED BOLT EV AND VOLT "If you're considering a used electric car, now might be a good time to spring into action. General Motors is offering 0% APR financing for 72 months on used Chevrolet Bolt EV electric cars and Chevy Volt plug-in hybrids, according to our companion site CarsDirect, which cited a bulletin sent to dealerships last week. The deal, which runs through February 1, is the type of offer typically seen only for new cars." says Green Car Reports: "Only factory-certified used cars are eligible, the website said, adding that dealerships may certify used cars to their own standards, but these dealer-certified vehicles do not qualify for financing deals from the automaker. The reason for deals on used models may be that Bolt EVs of this vintage are currently being limited to 90% of their battery capacity, as GM and cell supplier LG Chem work on a solution to an issue potentially related to Bolt EV fire risk."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1130944_chevy-offers-0-financing-on-used-bolt-ev-and-volt   XPENG PLANS EUROPEAN EXPANSION "With the launch of its G3 SUV in Norway, Xpeng is now looking at further European countries to expand to. The G3 has a WLTP range of 280 miles and is considered a smart SUV. This is thanks to its clever XPILOT 2.5 advanced driver assistance system. The G3’s auto parking function is able to distinguish between parallel and bay parking spaces, as well as marked and unmarked ones." reports Next Green Car: "The domestic market in China is still Xpeng’s primary customer base but it has big ambitions to move further into Europe. Xpeng is actively exploring its next steps, looking at other mature EV hotspots like Norway. The G3 SUV will be the first to roll out in other countries but the P7 electric sports sedan will be the next to launch in Europe."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9070/xpeng-plans-european-expansion/   BMW PLANS TO DOUBLE BATTERY ELECTRIC CAR SALES THIS YEAR "BMW said on Friday that it aims to double its sales of fully-electric vehicles this year as the German carmaker and rivals race to release new models to comply with CO2 emissions targets and chase market leader Tesla. BMW also said that including plug-in hybrids, it aims for a 50% increase in sales of electrified vehicles versus 2020. It did not give sales volumes for its fully electric vehicles but in 2020 data released on Tuesday BMW said it sold close to 193,000 electrified vehicles — fully electric and plug-in hybrid — last year." writes Autoblog: "Tesla delivered just under 500,000 vehicles, all fully electric, to customers in 2020. The BMW Group currently produces 13 electrified models — either fully electric or plug-in hybrid — sold in 74 markets. BMW said on Tuesday that its global EV sales rose 31.8% in 2020 and accounted for 15% of its sales in Europe, helping the company meet its European Union emissions targets for last year."   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/16/bmw-plans-double-ev-sales/   VOLKSWAGEN ADDS EV MAKERS TO CO2 POOL WITH SAIC "Volkswagen AG has opened its CO2 pool in the EU further at the end of last year to include more manufacturers. The new pooling partners all make electric vehicles." according to electrive: "Take the Chinese newcomer Aiways, whose BEVs will now add to Volkswagen’s “efforts” in keeping in line with the EU emission regulations as the company drives forward European expansion. Other new members to the CO2 pool include the British London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC), which belongs to the Geely Group. Most of the Group’s sales in Britain are through Bentley, meaning CO2 intensive cars. LEVC will now add to this pool of greener cars."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/01/15/volkswagen-adds-ev-makers-to-co2-pool-with-saic/   EUROPEAN PLUG-IN CAR MARKET NOW ALMOST EQUAL WITH CHINA "According to Schmidt Automotive Research, the West European passenger car market finished 2020 under 35,000 units behind the Chinese plug-in market. Although that doesn't sound close on the surface, the difference between the two motoring giants at the end of 2019 was still a mammoth 650,000 units." writes Matthias Schmidt: "The West European market that includes the original EU member states before the 2004 enlargement plus Norway, Iceland and Switzerland saw a near-even split between BEVs and PHEVs contribute to the 1.33 million new passenger cars entering European roads last year. While in China, according to CAAM data, four-in-five of the plug-ins entering roads there were of the pure electric BEV variant last year."   https://www.schmidtmatthias.de/post/european-rechargeable-electric-car-market-now-almost-equal-with-china-exclusive   AUDI STRENGTHENS BUSINESS IN CHINA Audi and FAW confirm a new cooperation company for the future production of PPE-based electric vehicles in Changchun in the northeast of China. AUDI AG and Volkswagen Group China will receive a 60-percent share, making this company – founded for the local production of fully electric Audi models on the “Premium Platform Electric” (PPE) codeveloped with Porsche – the first cooperation company with a majority interest held by Audi in China. Local manufacture of the first PPE model produced jointly with FAW is scheduled to start by 2024.   https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2021/01/First-majority-interest-held-by-Audi-in-new-cooperation-company-for-local-electric-car-production-with-FAW.html     QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   Mark Buckingham in New Zealand Kia Ora  Martyn,  My favorite charging network is Chargenet here in New Zealand thanks to them I have 98,000 ks on my Kona and can travel anywhere in NZ. Thanks for what you do , been listening since January 2018 so it’s 3 years coming up soon? Congrats   THIJS TOLLENAAR My favourite charging network is the one available at my destination! With my 2012 Kangoo I have a limited range and no fast charging (3.7kW max actually) but driving it in the Netherlands is attainable because of the availability of destination chargers. As long as they are plenty and available, I’m happy! :-)   (PATREON) JEAN-MICHEL MASSEY I can’t fault Tesla’s network - you called it already on the show - it just works, it’s fast, they’re plentiful, and the car plans the route for you, giving me confidence to go on long drives (I’ve done two 2000+ mile road trips around France) I’ve used a few destination chargers at hotels too which is always amazing - I have to street park my car in London, luckily can charge at work, street parking remains a sticking point for the masses in the city for sure, I like the Ubitricity model, power sipping off street lamps so, If there was one network in the city I’d like to roll out quicker, that would be the one - some city charging is paid by time - and becomes rather expensive to fill from low SOC to full, however, my local point remains fairly busy.   LEE BROWN, SCOTLAND My answer for this week is ChargePlace Scotland. £20 a year for an RFID card and access to hundreds of chargers that are getting added to each and every month. It helped me buy an EV in the first place as all round where I live charging is still free on rapids and destination chargers. Dedicated helpline too and from my experience very little problems plugging in.   VICK GRANT Instavolt gets my vote. It works, debit/credit card only, priced ok, easy to use.   (PATREON) ED CORTEEN As most of my charging is at home we only charge on long trips and since these are mainly on motorways our favourite chargers are ZAP-MAPs least favourite, the Electric Highway, this was originally paid for with the help of Nissan so as a driver of a Leaf has never failed me, two chargers in most locations and very rarely a queue as we usually travel during the week. Most importantly if the charger loses connection you get a free charge, unlike other networks where the charger simply refuses to work in this situation. I think the poor implementation of CCS and only one charger at each location has put many drivers off and needs to be fixed!   KARL CRAMER Change Point. I’d be willing to pay a reasonable rate but all the Charges Point chargers in my area are free. All of them.   CAROLINE, LOS ALTOS CA Volta Charging here in the US! Free to consumer, super convenient locations and highly visible, and sounds like they’re coming with some form of DCFC that’s also (partially) free. I charge at the mall and grocery locations. Their free, easy to use charging Convinced me it’s time to buy into EV!   NICHOLAS PARTRIDGE, EAST NORTHANTS Currently I'm enjoying chargepoint instavolt as they're conveniently located and very easy to use. Once I got the (NFC?) card sent from Holland.   MATTI JOUKIMO, FINLAND My and many others in Finland prefer and love Recharge network for two main reasons. First they work like a charm and have wide coverage. Second, and this is equally important (if not more), they were the first to adopt awesome S-series charging system by Kempower! (special thanks to the owner of the McDonald's too.)"   CASEY, EDMONDS I don't do very much long distance travel so I charge mostly at home.  But when we're out shopping or running errands, I like to look for Volta chargers.  They are "free" level 2 chargers with ads.  The network is growing here in the US and for people like me, who don't need to go from 20 to 80, they're great.     QUESTION OF THE WEEK When did you first know you wanted to drive EV?     Send me your answer: hello@evnewsdaily.com     You can listen to all 964 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAN SEAR (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) EDWYN CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NICHOLAS MILLER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. EUROPEAN UNION AIMS TO HAVE 30 MILLION ELECTRIC CARS "The European Union will aim to have at least 30 million zero-emission vehicles on its roads by 2030, as it seeks to steer countries away from fossil fuel-based transport, according to a draft document seen by Reuters. In a strategy due to be published next week, the European Commission will lay out measures to tackle the quarter of EU greenhouse gas emissions that come from the transport sector." writes Reuters.com: "That is a huge step up from the 1.8 million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles registered in Europe at the end of last year. The EU will next year propose tighter CO2 emissions standards for cars and vans from 2025, and the draft document says they could be expanded to cover buses.”   As I've previously reported, the forthcoming Euro7 emissions standard IS achievable with technology, more hybrid and batteries, but it's going to increase the costs for the car makers and could increase purchase price.   The German car lobby has already spat their dummy out. Then they called for synthetic fuels and hydrogen.   https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-climate-change-eu-transport/eu-to-target-30-million-electric-cars-by-2030-draft-idUKKBN28E2KM   MODEL S AND X DELIVERY TIMELINES NOW AS LONG AS 17 WEEKS - WHY? "For some people wanting to order a new Tesla Model S or Model X, the online Design Studio is showing they could be in for a long wait, hinting at some possible changes coming early next year." reports DriveTeslaCanada: "Rumours of changes coming to the two most expensive vehicles in Tesla’s lineup has been going on for years as the designs of the Model S is essentially the same as when it was released in 2012. One of the most recent rumours popped up earlier this year about a “Project Palladium” which involved new production lines for updated versions of both vehicles.  A refresh was further hinted at last month when customers in Europe saw prices of both vehicles increase by €5,000 ($7,700 CAD). To go along with the price increase, delivery timelines were also pushed all the way back to March 2021."   When I do it, it says 2-4 weeks   https://driveteslacanada.ca/model-s/tesla-model-s-x-delivery-timelines-17-weeks/   POLESTAR 2 IS NORWAY'S 2020 “CAR OF THE YEAR” "the country’s Car of the Year competition unsurprisingly crowned a battery electric vehicle for the 2020 edition. It's not the usual suspect, though - a.k.a. Tesla’s Model 3, which has been falling out of favor recently. It’s not even the current sales leader, Audi's e-tron SUV." repotrs Autoevolution: "Instead, the jurors chose a model that’s thoroughly infused with Scandinavian DNA – the Polestar 2. The local experts decided the Chinese-built Swedish electric sedan was “a great joy to drive at a very reasonable price point.” Volvo’s attempt at electric vehicle supremacy is riddled with early adopter issues, while deliveries on the Norwegian market placed the Polestar 2 in a rather mediocre 18th position, with 1,805 vehicles sold during the first ten months of the year."   APTERA IS BACK WITH A NEW EV IT SAYS DOESN’T NEED CHARGING "Aptera, the company that shuttered in 2011 after failing to secure funding for its three-wheeled electric car, is back with a new solar electric vehicle it claims never needs charging, at least, for most drivers. And it predicts its top model, with a battery of 100 kWh, can get up to 1,000 miles of range." says The Verge: "The new three-wheeled, two-person (or two adults plus pet, as its specs suggest) vehicle has a solar roof array that can provide up to 45 miles of range per day, so if you have that top model and add the charge from the solar panels while it’s parked, then the 1,000 range seems ... possible. Although, as Car and Driver points out, the vehicle isn’t charging while driving. The vehicle is curvy and lightweight, according to the images and spec sheet, and it has a drag coefficient of just 0.13 (by way of comparison, Tesla’s Model 3 has a drag coefficient of 0.23, and Volkswagen’s ID 4 electric SUV is at 0.28). Its front-wheel drive vehicle can go from zero to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, and its three-wheel drive model can get to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds."   And Tom at InsideEVs says: "At the 2:55 mark in the company-released Aptera video, we see what appears to be a Tesla inlet on the vehicle, with a Tesla connector about to plug into it.  You'll notice the connector doesn't have the Tesla name on the top as they usually do. Instead, there's a green overlay with the Aptera logo on it. We wonder if Aptera has struck some kind of deal with Tesla to use its charging technology. Wouldn't that be a coup for the company if its customers had access to the largest and most convenient DC fast-charging network in the world, as well as the use of thousands of destination chargers scattered across the country? Tesla has always maintained that it would be open to allowing others to use its supercharger network, but the cost of admission has been too high for anyone to take them up on it. We know first hand that at least two legacy automakers reached out to Tesla in the past to discuss a possible collaboration, but a deal was never struck."   We wait for an online live Q&A on Dec 9 when we find out more.   In the comments section 'NoFuel' says: "It’s classified as a motorcycle from what I have heard, so no $7,500 rebate."   Why would a company which has an engineering prototype be given access to Tesla? Or is it from a scrapped Tesla?   https://www.theverge.com/2020/12/6/22157109/aptera-ev-solar-charging-vehicle   https://insideevs.com/news/458607/aptera-using-tesla-charging-technology/     BIDEN’S CHARGING PLAN COULD SELL 25 MILLION EVS "the president-elect has a plan to install 500,000 electric vehicle charging cords by 2030, roughly a five-fold increase in the nation’s EV infrastructure that could cost more than $5 billion." says Houston Chronicle: "The 500,000-unit pledge was part of Biden’s platform when he was running for the job but largely overlooked in a grinding campaign dominated by the pandemic. Now, the industry hopes he’ll stick with it.   The infrastructure milestone would cover 57 percent of the charging that U.S. vehicles will need by 2030 and could spark the sale of some 25 million electric cars and trucks, according to forecasts by BloombergNEF. Right now, there are about 90,000 public charging plugs at 28,000 U.S. stations, according to the latest Energy Department tally. However, one in five of those is exclusive to Tesla; of the remainder, only one in 10 tops a car up quickly enough to be useful on a road trip."   Policy provides guidance for investment - car makers, charging companies, utilities, associated sectors. This is what China has been doing already.   https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/article/Biden-s-charging-plan-could-sell-25-million-EVs-15778891.php   UK WILL STUDY 'RANGE ANXIETY' IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING "Britain's competition regulator said on Wednesday it would study whether the fast-growing electric vehicle charging sector worked well in helping drivers deal with "range anxiety", or the worry about not being able to find a chargepoint. Research showed range anxiety was a key concern for many consumers and ensuring easy access to chargepoints was key to persuading drivers to switch to electric vehicles, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said." according to Autoblog; "There are almost 20,000 vehicle chargepoints, up from around 1,500 in 2011, although more will be needed in the future as this is the only way to power electric vehicles, the CMA said. The CMA will look at how to develop a competitive sector while also attracting private investment to help the sector grow, and ensure drivers get the best service from chargepoints."     From the UK Gov website: "The CMA has launched a market study into the electric vehicle charging sector in the UK. We are considering 2 broad themes:   how to develop a competitive sector while also attracting private investment to help the sector grow how to ensure people using electric vehicle chargepoints have confidence that they can get the best out of the service We are inviting comments by 5 January 2021 on the issues raised in the invitation to comment, including from interested parties such as chargepoint providers, industry bodies, regulators, local authorities and consumer groups."   https://www.gov.uk/cma-cases/electric-vehicle-charging-market-study   SOME CADILLAC DEALERS CHOSE TO CLOSE RATHER THAN SELL EVS "The Wall Street Journal reports that about 150 out of Cadillac’s 880 dealers chose to stop selling the brand’s cars to avoid getting into EV sales. Costs for dealer upgrades may have been the deciding factor, but dealers continue to be an obstacle to electrification." says CleanTechnica: " Cadillac dealers were given a choice by General Motors: either pony up for dealership upgrades to sell only electric vehicles, or accept a buyout of $500,000 to $1,000,000 to give up their franchise. Dealers choosing to continue selling the brand need to upgrade repair equipment, install electric vehicle chargers, make other upgrades, and get training to sell what will become GM’s first electric-only brand. Now we know what happened — about 17% of Cadillac’s dealers went for the buyout option. According to the Wall Street Journal, many of the dealers that opted for the buyout were the smaller ones, and often had a dealership selling multiple GM brands. With volume of Cadillac sales only a small portion of their overalls sales, paying for major upgrades was definitely the most expensive option."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/12/05/some-cadillac-dealers-chose-to-close-rather-than-sell-evs/   SOLAR ROADWAY FOR GEORGIA "US smart city Peachtree Corners, in Georgia, has unveiled a photovoltaic roadway system which produces energy for a solar-powered electric vehicle charging station located at city hall. The solar roadway is located in a section of Technology Parkway's autonomous vehicle test lane and was financed through a partnership with The Ray, a non-profit organisation focused on clean transport technologies in the state." according to RENews.biz: "The new system at Peachtree Corners will produce more than 1.3 megawatt-hours of electricity annually for a Level 2 EV charger at city hall at no cost to EV motorists. The charger is also equipped with an energy storage system for night-time charging. The solar roadway uses Wattway panels, provided by French company Colas Group in partnership with the French National Solar Energy Institute. The panels were engineered to be more durable and efficient resulting in a 21% performance increase over previously deployed panels."   https://renews.biz/64920/us-city-switches-on-solar-roadway/     1,000,000 PLUG-IN CARS SOLD SO FAR THIS YEAR IN EUROPE Automakers have sold more than 1,000,000 all-electric and plug-in hybrid cars in Europe during 2020, a milestone in the automotive industry’s move away from fossil fuels. According to the latest report published by Schmidt Automotive Research, the 18 country West European passenger car market consisting of the original EU member states prior to the 2004 enlargement On today’s podcast: Berlin-made Model Y Will Use ‘Battery Day’ Technology Volvo's New Small EV Is Based On A Platform Shared With Polestar Volvo XC40 Recharge electric SUV manages 208 miles EPA range GMC Hummer EV will be unveiled during the World Series 90,000 BEVs join West European roads in September Tesla Has Chance to Surpass 500K Annual Production in 2020 Elon Musk Approaches Another Big Payday PG&E Reminds EV Drivers to Apply for $800 Clean Fuel Rebate Before End of Year New All-Electric Niagara Falls Tour Ferries Powered By ABB Enter Service     Show #902   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 7th October. BERLIN-MADE MODEL Y WILL USE ‘BATTERY DAY’ TECHNOLOGY "Elon Musk has confirmed some interesting details about the vehicles that Tesla will be producing at Giga Berlin. According to the Tesla CEO, the Model Y that will be produced at the facility will be using the company’s custom 4680 cells and structural battery pack. Gigafactory Berlin will also be using single-piece front and rear castings for its vehicles, on top of a new paint shop." writes Teslarati: "The confirmation of 4680 cells and structural battery packs for the Made-in-Germany Model Y is big news for the electric car community. During Battery Day, after all, Tesla took a very conservative stance when announcing its battery production targets, a strategy that appears to have confounded and disappointed Wall Street. That said, the company did show subtle signs that it may be ready to produce vehicles with its 4680 cells and structural battery pack sooner than expected."   Elon Musk: "Berlin will use 4680 cell with structural battery pack & front & rear single piece castings. Also, a new paint system. Lot of new technology will happen in Berlin, which means significant production risk. Fremont & Shanghai will transition in ~2 years when new tech is proven. We do expect to make heavy use of LFP for medium range cars & stationary storage. Prototypes are a piece of cake, but high volume production of a new technology is extremely hard. Takes much longer than people think to climb the production S-curve. I can’t emphasize enough that production is by *far* the hard part.. Bringing a new product to volume production is 1% inspiration & 99% perspiration. You do still need that critical seed of inspiration, but it’s fun & takes ~100 people. Production takes >10,000 people & hurts like hell until the gigantic cybernetic collective runs smoothly. The Model 3 production ramp was sheer agony for two years, but that was do or die for Tesla. No US car company has reached high volume production with sustained free cash flow in ~100 years. Hundreds of car startups all died or were absorbed for peanuts by big three.. Battery pack will be a bonded structure with cells providing shear transfer between steel upper & lower face sheets, eliminating most of the center body parts while providing better torsional rigidity & improved polar moment or inertia. This is a *major* breakthrough. The crash absorption rails can be cut off & replaced with a bolted part for collision repair ".   The impression from Battery Day was that the 4680 would be Plaid/Semi/Cybertruck/Roadster   How different Battery Day could have been perceived.   Will they keep the range the same and use fewer cells? Will they go for more range? Tabless cell. 5 x energy, +16% range, 6x power.  Sandy Munro said that in contrast to 4,416 2170 cells Long Range pack there will be 960 cells of 4680. Tesla Battery day said the cell-to-pack technology means 370 fewer parts.     VOLVO'S NEW SMALL EV IS BASED ON A PLATFORM SHARED WITH POLESTAR "Volvo has confirmed it will build a new small electric crossover based on a platform developed to underpin vehicles from a very interesting spectrum of future cars, including Polestar, Lotus and even those new electric London taxis." says Jalopnik: "Volvo has a plan to boost its battery-powered vehicle sales exponentially in the next five years, and now the hazy gap between next year’s all-electric XC40 crossover and 2022’s planned all-electric XC90 may be filled with something on all-new architecture."   According to Automotive News: "Volvo Cars confirmed it will build a small electric car, which will be a crucial part of its effort to get half of its global sales from battery-powered vehicles by 2025. The model will use the recently revealed Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) that the Swedish automaker helped parent Zhejiang Geely Holding develop."   https://jalopnik.com/volvos-new-small-ev-is-based-on-a-platform-shared-with-1845300345   VOLVO XC40 RECHARGE ELECTRIC SUV MANAGES 208 MILES EPA RANGE "The EPA gave the Recharge a range estimate of just 208 miles. While that wouldn't be terrible on its own, it starts to look a bit grimmer when you consider that the Recharge is packing a fairly sizable battery -- 78 kilowatt-hours, to be precise -- and the same drivetrain as the Polestar 2." says CNET: "Part of it has to do with the body shape of the XC40. It's less slippery than the Polestar 2 or Tesla's Model Y, for example, and wind resistance is a surefire way to eat up range. That shape difference would account for the approximately 11% worse range than the Polestar. Even if things are better in practice than they are on paper, that 208-mile range figure might be enough on its own to cause customers to look elsewhere. Still, if the driving dynamics are as good as in the ICE-powered XC40, then maybe the extra expense of going to the Recharge over something like the Chevy Bolt would be worth it."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/volvo-xc40-recharge-electric-suv-range-epa/ n GMC HUMMER EV WILL BE UNVEILED DURING THE WORLD SERIES "A big-time vehicle reveal deserves a prime-time multi-platform debut. At least, that seems to be the opinion of the folks tasked with reintroducing the American public on October 20 to the Hummer nameplate, this time affixed to pickups and SUVs that also wear General Motors' "Professional Grade" GMC badge. And instead of a standalone brand with dealerships full of gas-guzzling off-road beasts, this new, kinder, gentler and fully electric Hummer won't sip any gas at all." reports Jalopnik: "The debut will take place across several channels. As has been the de facto process during the pandemic, the event will be streamed online. But — taking a page from the reveal of the Ford Bronco this past July — it will also be witnessed by watchers of the World Series on Fox and "The Voice" on NBC (at least those who are watching live and aren't skipping commercials). Interestingly, according to The Detroit News the television segments will be spread across multiple commercial breaks as sort of a mini film. We know it'll boast 1,000 horsepower, go from 0-60 in around 3 seconds, have the next generation of GM's Super Cruise autonomy technology, have removable roof panels and be able to crab walk."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/07/gmc-hummer-debut-world-series-the-voice-streaming/   90,000 BEVS JOIN WEST EUROPEAN ROADS IN SEPTEMBER From @auto_schmidt: The perfect storm leads to 90,000 BEVs (7.5% mix) joining West European roads in September   - YTD >400k BEV - More than FY 2019 with 3 months left - Total plug-in market (PHEV/BEV) remains on target to reach 1m volume this year"   TESLA HAS CHANCE TO SURPASS 500K ANNUAL PRODUCTION IN 2020 "As Tesla just recently announced its all-time record Q3 deliveries of 139,300 units—and production of 145,036 units—the company will need to deliver roughly 182,000 units in Q4 to hit its 2020 target of half a million units." according to Tesmanian: "Recently, we learned from a leaked email from Tesla CEO Elon Musk to all employees that the company has a chance to make over 500k units in a year for the very first time in the history."   From Elon: ""When we started Tesla just over 16 years ago, I never thought we would get this far, but, thanks to your hard work and ingenuity, we actually have a chance of making half a million cars in a single year. Wow, that is so incredible!! This all comes down to Q4. Please take whatever steps you can think of to improve output (while increasing quality)."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-has-a-chance-to-surpass-500k-annual-production-in-2020-leaked-email-by-elon-musk   ELON MUSK APPROACHES ANOTHER BIG PAYDAY "Tesla's upcoming quarterly report could put another $3 billion in Chief Executive Elon Musk's pocket." writes Autoblog: "Tthe six-month average of its stock market value hit $250 billion, a milestone toward triggering the fourth of 12 tranches of options to buy Tesla stock at a discount . To secure Musk's fourth tranche, Tesla still must hit a goal related to revenue or profitability, and that could happen in the company's third-quarter report, the date of which has yet to be announced. Each tranche gives Musk the option to buy 8.44 million Tesla shares at $70 each, about a sixth of their current price. At Tesla’s current stock price of $420, Musk would theoretically be able to sell the shares related to the upcoming tranche, plus three other tranches that vested in recent months, for a combined profit of $11.8 billion, or almost $3 billion per tranche"   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/06/elon-musk-stock-option-payout-tesla-earnings/   PG&E REMINDS EV DRIVERS TO APPLY FOR $800 CLEAN FUEL REBATE BEFORE END OF YEAR "Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is reminding residential customers who have purchased or leased an electric vehicle to apply for the company’s $800 Clean Fuel Rebate before it concludes at the end of 2020.PG&E’s Clean Fuel Rebate is a one-time $800 rebate for PG&E residential electric customers who are EV drivers and is in addition to any federal, state or local incentives customers may be eligible for. Launched in 2017, the rebate will be concluding at the end of 2020. To date, PG&E has paid over $92 million to about 145,000 customers through the rebate. The deadline to apply for the rebate is December 31, 2020."   https://electriccarsreport.com/2020/10/pge-reminds-ev-drivers-to-apply-for-800-clean-fuel-rebate-before-end-of-year/   NEW ALL-ELECTRIC NIAGARA FALLS TOUR FERRIES POWERED BY ABB ENTER SERVICE "Tour boat passengers will be able to experience one of the wonders of the natural world undisturbed by exhaust fumes, engine noise or vibrations, after a pair of vessels installed with all-electric propulsion from ABB have been approved to enter service on October 6, 2020.""with power drawn from a high-capacity battery pack supplied and integrated by ABB. each powered by a pair of battery packs providing 316 kWh total capacity divided across two catamaran hulls, offering a level of redundancy that helps to safeguard operations. The batteries allow the electric propulsion motors to reach an output of up to 400 kW, with the power setup controlled by ABB’s Power and Energy Management System. They are charged using locally produced hydroelectricity – ensuring that the energy cycle for the operation of the Maid of the Mist ferries is entirely emissions free – in a process that takes just seven minutes during disembarkation and boarding."   https://new.abb.com/news/detail/68546/new-all-electric-niagara-falls-tour-ferries-powered-by-abb-enter-service           You can listen to all 900 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSYMONS.CO.UK – THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SPECIALIST (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NICHOLAS MILLER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. In her new book, West Germany and Israel: Foreign Relations, Domestic Politics and the Cold War (Cambridge University Press, 2019), Carole Fink examines the relationship between West Germany and Israel. By the late 1960s, West Germany and Israel were moving in almost opposite diplomatic directions in a political environment dominated by the Cold War. The Federal Republic launched ambitious policies to reconcile with its Iron Curtain neighbors, expand its influence in the Arab world, and promote West European interests vis-à-vis the United States. By contrast, Israel, unable to obtain peace with the Arabs after its 1967 military victory and threatened by Palestinian terrorism, became increasingly dependent upon the United States, estranged from the USSR and Western Europe, and isolated from the Third World. Nonetheless, the two countries remained connected by shared security concerns, personal bonds, and recurrent evocations of the German-Jewish past. Drawing upon newly-available sources covering the first decade of the countries' formal diplomatic ties, Carole Fink reveals the underlying issues that shaped these two countries' fraught relationship and sets their foreign and domestic policies in a global context. Carole Fink is Humanities Distinguished Professor Emeritus at The Ohio State University Craig Sorvillo is a PhD candidate in modern European history at the University of Florida. He specializes in Nazi Germany, and the Holocaust. He can be reached at craig.sorvillo@gmail.com or on twitter @craig_sorvillo.

“With Austria currently the only West European nation since World War II governed by the far right, it’s time (heck, it’s long past time) that someone of Ruth Beckermann’s intelligence made a film investigating the country’s odious collective whitewashing of its Nazi-era past. In her incisive documentary ‘The Waldheim Waltz,’ the director treats former U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim as a poster boy of the phenomenon. Using only footage from the 1970s and ’80s, some of which she shot herself while protesting Waldheim’s successful bid for the Austrian presidency, Beckermann methodically reveals the timeline of revelations detailing her subject’s Nazi affiliations, and how notwithstanding the evidence, a majority of the electorate in 1986 still voted him into office.” - Jay Weissberg, Variety. In this installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large,” “Waldheim Waltz” director Ruth Beckermann discusses this important documentary.

We return with part 6 of our series on 17th century warfare, and in this episode we have something very special for you guys – an examination of the sick man of Europe, before he was sick, but when he was certainly maligned and looked down upon. For some time, it has been supposed that the Ottoman Empire could not keep pace with Western Europe, and that her eclipse by the West European powers in the 1700s was an inevitable, rational process which can be partially explained by the Turk’s reluctance to accept new technological advances. Yet, as we’ll learn here, this generalisation against the Turks is as unfair as it is unfounded. The Ottoman Empire possessed one of the most advanced organisational and administrative systems in the world at the dawn of the 17th century. She was equipped with some of the most educated military minds, and had on site some of the best facilities for producing the weapons of war which he soldiers needed. This was not a sick man of Europe, nor did the patient show any signs of illness – far from it. The Turk was the envy of the continent thanks to the immense successes and accomplishments of her Sultans and soldiers, and it was partially to explain away these successes that the more unflattering myths about the Turk’s barbarity did the rounds. In this episode we’ll learn what the Turk was truly capable of, and why he made use of certain weapons which were shown to be obsolete in other parts of Europe. The Military Revolution, as we’ll see, was not the blanket theory which could be universally applied to all – advancements in technology did not arrive evenly to the continent, and even when they did, these advancements were affected by the circumstances on the ground, and issues as simple as whether Tartars were more comfortable firing a technically obsolete bow, than picking up a more ‘modern’ carbine. So I hope you’ll join me here history friends, while we examine the Turk’s prowess in the detail it deserves. Thanksss! The influence of the French riots went far beyond the country's borders, even if the copycat incidents in countries such as Belgium,[1] Germany,[2] and the Netherlands[3] were minor. Many profound problems that came to the fore during the French riots also exist, in somewhat different form, in several other West European countries. One is the non-integration of substantial parts of minority populations, largely from Muslim countries in North and West Africa. Others are majority and minority racism and the impact of incitement from the Muslim world against Western democracies. These play out in various European countries that struggle to define what their value system is, what place minority cultures should hold in their societies, and thus what their attitude toward multiculturalism should be.

How West European Philo-Semites became Anti-Semites before the Second World War - Simcha Epstein

In his presentation at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA), Dr. Epstein discusses the phenomenon of philo-Semites (actively supportive of the Jewish people) becoming anti-Semites during the 1930s, before the Second World War. He explains how during that time there were two forms of anti-Semitism, one was emanating from the Nazis and the other was from the humanitarians, pacifists and leftists. Dr. Epstein's presentation focuses particularly on this development in France. France is particularly important because it was the only country that could match Nazi Germany, but the pacifism and appeasement tactics prevented French intervention in Germany. Dr. Epstein explains hows French pacifists had issues in combatting anti-Semitism in Germany because they were trying to avoid war. Condemning them for their discrimination and oppression of German Jews would be preparing for war. Jewish organizations created boycott campaigns against Germany. The Nazis replied with counter-campaigns. Specifically, boycotting the businesses of Germany Jews and further oppression, as well as an explanation campaign. This campaign focused on the vilification and demonization of Germany (so-called ""atrocity propaganda""). The Nazi propaganda described Germany as being discriminated against - which worked for the pacifists. Hitler also used the principle of self-determination and the victimization of Germany (especially after the Treaty of Versailles) to regain Germany territory and for re-militarization.
