This week's question comes from Dan on the Real Estate Rookie Facebook Group. Dan is asking: For those of you that have gone through the eviction process, did you go it alone in small claims court or did you hire a lawyer? While Tony (thankfully) doesn't have experience evicting any tenants, Ashley has had to evict multiple out of her personal investment properties as well as from properties she managed when she was a full-time property manager. She describes the multiple ways you can evict a tenant, all of which will rely on the situation the tenant presents you with. Here are some suggestions:Hire an attorney if you are inexperienced with tenant evictionsUse small claims court to get back rent or payment for damagesOffer cash for keys if you are unable to legally evict at this timeUnderstand that many tenants will pay or leave once they receive an eviction noticeAnd Much More!If you want Ashley and Tony to answer a real estate question, you can post in the Real Estate Rookie Facebook Group! While Tony was crosswalking at the corner of Harrison and Locust, in Davenport -IA-, Jake came by and asked for a free Bible. Jake said he only had a minute to chat. That minute turned into a half-hour conversation about the things of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ.--Jake, who was raised in Lutheranism, described himself as agnostic. By conversation's end, Jake's agnosticism was a thing of the past.
This week the guys discuss Viking Hoard and Charles Byrnes. Kevin Blake has concerns with several aspects of the case, most notably, the absence of CCTV at all but one Irish Racecourses. While Tony feels there was some naïve and incorrect reporting on the role betting Exchanges played in bringing the case to light and how they have been subsequently portrayed. It’s week two of our ‘Footsteps To The Festival’ segment the guys take an in-depth look at Day 2 of Cheltenham with the Ballymore, Festival Novices’ Chase (formerly the RSA) and Champion Chase taking centre stage. GIVING AT THE HEART OF COMMUNITIES THAT CAN LEAST AFFORD IT From feeding 40,000 kids a day in Malawi to the cashback scheme from the police and Food for Good. Tony is proud of what his Celtic FC Foundation is achieving. “We can't boil the ocean, but we try to do what we can do. “Our role is to tackle poverty and redeem the lives of marginalised people. We identified 60 charities and funded these through the ‘Food for good' program. What we increasingly realise is that many people don't just need food they often need support with their mental health. We are also addressing that imperative.” One observation Tony is happy to share? It is people with the least that often give the most. His experience of this spirit started at home and then at St Andrews Secondary School in the east end of Glasgow. A school which Tony describes as ‘Mental'. It was run by the Marist Brothers and headed by Brother John Ogilvie who “had a heart of gold. He really did care about people and would regularly dip into his pocket if someone needed it.” It was years later in 2008, when after studying for his MBA, and with many years working in marketing roles at the Club, Tony was asked to set-up the Celtic FC Foundation. It was a challenge he relished, and it certainly didn't take him long to realise the immensity of the generosity out there – especially from some of the poorest communities. But with the Club's global draw we also organise fundraising dinners and events across the World – from London to New York. “It is something we will never, ever take for granted.” No entry to the ‘Polis' When he left school Tony's ambition was to go into law and he sent applications to a number of Police forces. These were unsuccessful admits Tony, who now reflects on the attainment and expectation gap that existed back in the early 80s. In his view, the gap was greater than now. “I did what many young men did in our community: “Got married young and had children.” What has never left Tony from his younger years is the ethos that existed in his community in Glasgow's east end. “You were brought up to look after people who needed help.” Now at the Celtic FC Foundation, that is precisely what drives him today. So, how does he advise young people today? “Have ambition, manage your expectations, have a bit of humility, make good choices and live your best life. It's not the money you make or where you get to travel to that should measure your success or make you happy. It is the people you surround yourself with. In short, find something to do which makes you happy, do it now and don't have any regrets.” The Power of Inspiration Tony has been both humbled and inspired by two books: One million Little Pieces by James Frey, whose experiences with drugs saw him near death's door before he checked in a Rehabilitation Clinic. It is a heartrending journey that will inspire anyone who finds themselves in that situation. The other is “All Hell Let Loose, from a politically opposite source, Max Hastings. It is the very human stories of how World War 2 impacted on ordinary lives that reinforces the utter futility of war. He cites his father and former Celtic hero, Stillian Petrov as his most inspiring influencers. So, what of the pandemic and the various stages of lockdown. “The really positive thing for me has been that bit more time spent at home and, believe it or not in the kitchen, where I have done much more cooking – expanding my skills. The food is "still terrible” but the focus and learning has been great. While Tony may not be the world's greatest chef, his greatest pride is the work ethic of his family. One final piece of advice: “Marry a good-looking cook. That's what my wife did.” In memory of Ann McDonald (1932-2020)

Eli is playing a road game for this episode, recording from his father's kitchen in Portland, Maine. He's there helping his dad out after a knee replacement surgery, which his (non-runner) dad had to have because (as Eli rants about a bit) running isn't actually any worse for you knees than any other activity! (And his dad's recovery is going well, thanks for asking.)With prompting from Eli, Tony gives an update about how his new virtual event, the Texas Distance Challenge, is going (short version: really well!). Tony compares what he hopes to accomplish with TDC (as the cool kids call it) to eating healthy as opposed to dieting and also explains why distance challenges should lean into their storytelling and maybe rely a little less on leaderboards. After sticking his neck out to test his theories (that we've all heard him presenting on at industry conferences for the last few years) by rolling out this event, it's a good thing for Tony that TDC is going as well as it is! And if you're interested in licensing the idea for your market, he's open to it...The co-hosts then dive into a big topic that Eli somehow overlooked while planning for this week's episode (although it's not always apparent, we actually prepare for our recording sessions!): Spartan's return to in-person racing. (The video of the Running USA webinar mentioned in this segment can be found here.) While Tony and Eli are both skeptical that any in-person event can be done perfectly safely, there are some good takeaways from what Spartan did that can be applied at any event. Finally, Tony IDs three questions that every event that wants to emulate Spartan and return to in-person racing needs to ask itself before returning to in-person racing:What is your organizational risk tolerance? What is your market's (participant and state/municipal) risk tolerance? And are your pockets deep enough to do everything that needs to be done?Eli then really strongly encourages everyone to build systems for their return to racing that don't just barely hit minimum standards but have enough slack in the system to deal with things not going exactly as planned. On another quixotic hashtag-pushing quest, he encourages everyone to build environmental safety and operations plans that are robust enough to #absorbtheassholes. (Tony wants to make 100% clear that he not only doesn't endorse this hashtag but that as his "risky click of the day" he also doesn't think you should use or search for it; the more-benign #returntoracing he is more tolerant towards.)If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review us on Apple podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts, and don't forget to subscribe. Tony Softli is back again today as Softy continues his vacation. Is Russell Wilson about to become a New York Giant? Colin Cowherd has suggested that Ciara, being an entertainer, wants to be in New York, and Russ stands to gain more in endorsements by being there, plus the Giants really need a future quarterback. So how likely is this? It's of course possible, but he's got it pretty good in Seattle. While Tony is here, it's the perfect time ot pick his brain about the Hawks' needs going into 2019. Tony grades each of ten Seahawks positions, plus a player-by-player analysis of the defense.

Tony Overbay began his career in the high tech world but felt the call to become a therapist and help men. He has been married 28 years, is a father of four, an ultra-marathoner, host of the Virtual Couch Podcast, creator of The Path Back, and currently serves on the Leading Saints Professional Therapists Advisory Board. Tony Overbay Highlights 12:45 Men in therapy - the stigma, stereotypes 14:40 Treatment of pornography addiction - behavior modification, identifying triggers “crimes of opportunity,” then thought, which leads to action/behavior. Tools to put distance between thoughts and action, initially, then work on thought, but have to deal with core issues to heal. 16:30 Core issues—feelings of inadequacy, not feeling connected to partner, job, or faith, poor health—have to be dealt with to heal from addiction. Go-to patterns of behavior learned in youth 17:45 Men have a harder time connecting, less likely to go to therapy, need to find ways to connect with a therapist first before talking about emotions before talking about the elephant in the room 20:45 "The bishop is not the therapist" mentality brings shame to the table because it doesn’t bring the connection. How can bishops help build connections? Bishops need authenticity and vulnerability to build connection, to avoid shame spiral by pushing to get to transgression immediately. Don’t rush it, show gratitude, build relationships, meet with love. A relationship is more important - can’t go and find another bishop, like a person can go find another therapist 26:20 Perfect Love Casteth Out Fear - Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf April 2017 - many bishops over-emphasize shame - sprinkling shame glitter - to make them know they did something "really bad." Have to give people hope and remove shame. 27:30 - Brother Tad Callister- guilt is the stop sign. Shame hangs around guilt and isn’t productive, is negative, and makes people feel horrible. Have to change the conversation because will lie when there are relapses 29:20 - Shame - leaders mix up shame and guilt. Shame is "you’re bad" and not "what you did is bad". Pornography addiction - first exposure - 8 to 11 yo - early exposure to pornography is early sexualization, which changes the wiring of the brain because the brain doesn’t know how to process information. Changes their perception of the world, have to understand with it to work with, and will remove the shame. 32:30 - Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf - minor things take a person further off course over time. What not to say to someone when talking to them because it makes the other person view it as shame and more broken and not empathetic because coming from a different point of view. 33:45 Dr. Patrick Carnes - sexual addiction counselor, sex addiction and pornography can be harder to overcome than drug or alcohol addiction because addictive obsession can cause mood alteration. Sex addicts carry their own source of supply in their brain. Prolonged use alters the brain. Why can’t I get it under control? Bishop asks why and doesn’t understand the why of a person wanting it. Unintended shame happens. 37:20 Double down on the empathy when people share. Jesus saw sin as wrong, but as needs not met. Look into lives of others to see their shortcomings, unmet needs, etc, that aren’t filled that we’re trying to fill. Need to focus on the deeper reason of why we sin and the need we’re trying to meet to become better. Have to help people find something to replace the void. Easier to add things to life than subtract from life. 40:00 - EFT - Emotionally Focused Therapy to connect with a spouse, which fills the void and turns toward a spouse. A person is greater than their sin or addiction. 41:00 How to create a situation where a person never faces sh...

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 221 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Some good old fashioned comedy gold for you this episode, as Pip is joined by Anglo-Canadian sensation Tony Law!Well - it would be a lie to say the entire episode is 100% comedy… While Tony is heavily schooled in the trade of standup and panel, his life hasn’t been one long standing ovation by any means. Prepare for some hard hitting reflections from a man who has fought the real fight with alcoholism and addiction, bridge burning, and all that entails, while dealing with almost becoming homeless and losing a LOT. I mean, don’t be put off by that - you’ll be listening to the story of a man who has come through that with a confident outlook and a tale that can surely inspire and instil that same positivity in any one of us. And who can resist that accent too, come on now. So join Pip and Tony as they get down to business on such topics as how Tony tracked Pip down, rebuilding his life after sobriety and the steps involved in doing so, being wilfully obtuse as a comedian as a strategy, the underground vs the mainstream (ah that old chestnut), chasing the England punk ideal, his background in history tours and how that sharpened his improv tools, also how becoming sober sharpened his comedy tools, and overall becoming better through bad experiences. A lot going on but certainly a truly interesting story and one that will inspire and uplift. Tony is one of the world’s leading authorities on human performance in time constrained, error intolerant environments, and has lectured on the subject around the globe for over two decades. Dr. Kern has received multiple awards for his work, including Aviation Week & Space Technology 2002 Laurels Award for Outstanding Achievement in Government and Military, the University Aviation Association’s John K. Lauber Safety Award (2015), and the Flight Safety Foundation-Airbus Human Factors in Aviation Safety Award (2015). While Tony is grateful to have won these and other awards, it’s a completely different honor to have an award named after you. In 2015, the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) announced the creation of the Dr. Tony Kern Professionalism in Aviation award, and at the NBAA National Safety Forum in 2016, NBAA President Ed Bolan announced the first 19 award recipients. Dr. Kern has authored eight books on human performance, including the award-winning “Plane of Excellence” trilogy (Redefining Airmanship, Flight Discipline, and Darker Shades of Blue; McGraw Hill 1995, 1997, 1999). Broadening his approach beyond aviation, his “Empowered Accountability” series (Blue Threat: Why to Err is Inhuman and Going Pro: The Deliberate Practice of Professionalism; Pygmy Books 2009, 2011) creates a 21st century guide to extreme professionalism. His newest book (The Ghost of Nathan Hale; North Slope Publications 2016) remains in line with Dr. Kern’s passion for identifying and reducing threats. In it he details how declining public trust in government is an existential threat to America and the world itself, and provides strong motivation and a step-by-step path for restoring the integrity of government. A prolific writer, Tony is also a featured columnist and Contributing Editor for Skies and Vertical 911 magazines. In addition, Dr. Kern has been interviewed regarding his methodologies by the Fox Business Network, Bloomberg TV, the Discovery Channel, National Public Radio, NBC Nightly News, and 48 Hours with Dan Rather, among others. Despite his three graduate degrees, Dr. Kern does not consider himself an “academic.” He has deep operational roots in the U.S. Air Force as a Command Pilot and Flight Examiner in the B-1B bomber, as well as diverse senior staff and leadership experience, including service as the Chairman of the U.S. Air Force Human Factors Steering Group, and Director and Professor of Military History at the USAF Academy. Upon retirement from the Air Force in 2000, Dr. Kern served as the National Aviation Director for the U.S. Forest Service, where he directed the largest non-military government aviation program in the world in support of federal wildland fire suppression. Tony is a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute and the U.S. Federal Government Senior Executive Service Development Program. Tony has dedicated his adult life to helping individuals and organizations reduce error, mitigate losses, and optimize their performance, but still finds time to enjoy his personal hobbies of hunting, fishing, sports of all kinds, and writing. He currently lives with his wife of 29 years and their seven dogs in Woodland Park, Colorado.

Tony and Sam host a very special guest for the first time - good friend and chef André Cordeiro! While Tony and Sam imbibe as usual, André is sober and therefore much more sensible and charming than the hosts. The three talk a lot about how passion makes all the difference in the food and service industry, among other things. André is an awesome and interesting guest who will hopefully be on the show again soon! Get your bookmarks ready and your open up your mind to the power of reading: this week, Ghost Team, Go! is live from a bookstore! Jack & Nick stumble upon an old Borders location in a spooky marsh, and venture inside hoping to find a ghost who can teach them all about the wonders of reading! Instead, they end up chatting with the unfortunately nicknamed Tony Bagg (T Bagg for short), about his unique line of children's books. While Tony's intentions are pure, his frequent misuse of language and accidental phrasing has created a series of kids' books much dirtier than the most depraved pornography. As Jack & Nick try and teach Tony the error of his ways (and words), they begin to realize that reading is more dangerous than they ever imagined, and that Tony's books have a mesmerizing power that may end in doom for Ghost Team, Go! Will Jack & Nick escape the curse of T Bag's terrible tomes? Can you inflate a raft with ghosts instead of air? And was "Monster Trucks" any good? Tune into this week's book-tastic episode to find out! FEATURING Kevin Pasquerella (@TheChad_27) as Tony Bagg.
In this episode, Dap (@dapisdope) sits down with NYC artist + tastemaker Tony Peralta (@peraltaprjct). (You may have seen The Kid Mero wearing his threads on @bodegaboys and the now defunct Desus v Mero podcast.) While Tony whipped up dinner, we talked about his life, Old New York vs New New York, gentrification, Afro-Latinx identity, Blackness, and more. Chuck joins George this week to talk about wrapping up the holidays, Star Wars: The Force Awakens (with no spoilers), and our mutual love of Disney theme parks and resorts.
