Isn't it "people who DON'T need people are the luckiest people in the world?" It's the Gospel according to Barbra! Today we look at the role that made Barbara Streisand's early career: the role of Fanny Brice in Jule Styne & Bob Merrill's 1964 musical Funny Girl and the 1968 film directed by William Wyler.   We talk about: The Greatest Star: The phenomenon of the original Fanny Brice, how Barbra got involved in the project, and where the line between ego, strength, and vanity lies. The Audience: The sacred relationship between performer and audience and Barbra's theory of audience (or—in a religious context—a congregation) as a truth barometer. The Patriarchy: Nick Arnstein & Fanny Brice's relationship, Barbra & her male collaborators, the creep factor of "You are Woman," and the dangerous myth of romantic love (attention straight people: beware writing your own vows!) The Parade: Is "Don't Rain on My Parade" a feminist anthem? The People: What's the theology of people who need people? Is this just a hymn to extroversion, or does it channel Archbishop Desmond Tutu's theology of ubuntu?   You'll hear: – The 1968 Film Soundtrack: "I'm the Greatest Star," Omar Shariff and Barbra singing "You Are Woman, I am Man," "My Man," "Don't Rain on My Parade" and—of course—"People."   Continue the conversation with us on Instagram and The Platform Formerly Known as Twitter (@gospelofmt).

“Plant seeds of happiness, hope, success, and love; it will come back to you in abundance, this is the law of nature.” - Steve Maraboli “Love makes the world go round,” this is a song that musicians like Deon Jackson, Bob Merrill, Jennifer Lopez, and others have used for their original creations, each one demonstrating the fact that love is indeed a powerful force. It has the strength to push us forward and bind us together, but lack of it can break us and leave us lost in darkness. However, it is not enough to simply love those around us, for the magic lies in achieving the balance between loving oneself and loving others. This is what today's episode is all about, the ninth part of a series of podcasts with the theme of Where You Are Is Not Who You Are. This is an important subject that continues to grow as we delve deeper into it. We invite you to be part of our conversations. We want to help and guide you on your own epic adventure - your journey within. It is now time to move from where you are and find the essence of the real you. Let love shine through you. Be the giver of hope. Highlights: ⚡️ Life is about becoming through overcoming. ⚡️ We have a choice between trying to make things happen and letting them happen. ⚡️ Being intentional is a better way to move through the world. ⚡️ There is hope for reconstruction amidst the debris and devastation. ⚡️ There is always an opportunity to become more than where you were. ⚡️ We receive, exchange, and sow seeds of love. Welcome to episode 92 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this special Christmas Podcasters Day episode, I talk about “Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol,” from 1962. I can't tell you how much I love this special. It's one of those things from when I was kid that has really stood the test of time. Jule Styne and Bob Merrill's music is a big reason for that, as are the performances of Jim Backus, Jack Cassidy and the rest of the cast. I was really only able to scratch the surface about the special and the people involved. If you'd like to learn more, do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy of Darrell Van Citters exceptional book, “Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, The Making Of The First Animated Christmas Special.” Since this is Christmas Podcast Day, make sure to check out a few of the other podcasts out there. You can find us all at christmaspodcasts.com, but we'll also be posting links to each other's shoes throughout the day. Be sure to join me back here next month as I talk about the music of Japanese clarinetist Shoji Suzuki. Up first is the 1959 compilation, “X'mas All Star Jazz Parade.” After that, I'll be covering his 1963 album, “Merry Christmas.” Then join me on the 25th for “Swingin' Christmas” from 1961. It's one of the first Japanese Christmas albums I found online, and one that really got me hooked on finding more. All three are exceptional albums and you won't want to miss them. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

00’00’00” Funny girl 00'02'24" Presentación 00’03’07” Cabecera 00’04’17” Presentación 00’05’46” Overture 00’11’24” If a girl isn’t pretty 00’14’24” I’m the greatest star 00’18’51” Cornet man 00’23’55” Nicky Arnstein 00’25’24” Who taught her everything? 00’31’10” His love makes me beautiful 00’37’48” I want to be seen with you tonight 00’40’01” Henry Street 00’42’47” People 00’48’27” You are woman, I’m man 00’53’49” Don’t rain on my parade 00’56’39” Entr’acte 00’59’50” Sadie, sadie 01’04’42” Find yourself a man 01’07’37” Temporary arrangement 01’11’53” Rat-tat-tat-tat 01’16’31” Who are you now? 01’20’42” What do happy people do? 01’22’07” The music that makes me dance 01’27’28” Funny girl 01’30’32” Don’t rain on my parade (Reprise) 01’32’32” Anécdotas y curiosidades 01’34’22” Second hand rose 01’37’05” Roller skate rag 01’39’04” I’d rather be blue over you (than happy with somebody else) 01’42’10” Locked in a pink velvet jail 01’44’02” Don’t rain Nicky 01’44’40” The swan 01’47’43” My man 01’51’01” I’m the greatest star 01’56’49” Don’t rain on my parade 01’59’47” Exit music

VT Folklife founder Jane C. Beck along with audio editor and musician Bob Merrill then worked together to create this ten-part radio series. It allows a rare, very human view, of our Legislature and its workings over the prior fifty-plus years.  The series demonstrates that within our state house the only constant has been change. Yet under the golden dome a unique citizen legislature where anyone can serve continues to thrive. Funding for radio production was provided by The Vermont Community Foundation and The Windham Foundation. We'll be releasing the full series over the next week to accompany you during the countdown to election day on November 8, 2022. We urge everyone to vote! Today I begin Forgotten Broadway, a new miniseries within my summer series “Musical Life in New York City 1950-1975.” This wildly eclectic (some might say chaotic) program, the first of three, concerns itself with several different aspects of “forgotten” Broadway: forgotten songs, forgotten shows, and forgotten performers; as well as all imaginable combinations of the above. For instance, many might not remember the show Drat! the Cat! but will remember quite well the song “He [originally She] Touched Me.” Everyone remembers Ethel Merman and Angela Lansbury, but I would bet that fewer remember their less successful shows Happy Hunting and Dear World. This episode includes songs by Richard Rodgers, Jule Styne, Bob Merrill, Wright and Forrest, and Comden and Green, as well as lesser known composers and lyricists such as Claibe Richardson, Bill and Patti Jacob, and Ervin Drake, sung by such stalwarts as Leslie Uggams, Barbara Cook, Alfred Drake, and Barbra Streisand, as well as such blazing (but less remembered figures) such as Alice Playten, Dolores Gray, Mimi Hines, and June Carroll. Such recently departed figures as Micki Grant, Kenward Elmslie, Sally Ann Howes, and Donald Pippin also receive airplay. Part II will be published in two weeks, and Part III will soon be available as a bonus episode for my Patreon subscribers. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. My Favorite Flop

"So here we are again", "talkin' in tongues" and proving "one man is not enough" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss ALL THREE musicals based on the literary work of Truman Capote on episode fifteen of My Favorite Flop: 1954's House of Flowers, 1966's Breakfast at Tiffany's, AND 1971's The Grass Harp.   ABOUT HOUSE OF FLOWERS Based on the original short story by Truman Capote, House of Flowers tells the story of two neighboring bordellos that battle for business in an idealized Haitian setting. The musical features music by Harold Arlen, lyrics by Arlen and Truman Capote, and a book by Capote. In the early 1950s, Truman Capote became involved in the performing arts. He was approached by producer Saint Subber to adapt his recent story, "House of Flowers", as a musical play for Broadway. Much of the writing was done in the Italian fishing village of Portofino; but Capote and Jack Dunphy found time to travel to Switzerland and Paris before turning to America, where Capote met again with producer Saint Subber and continued his work in the musical. After a Philadelphia try-out, the show opened on Broadway on December 30, 1954 at the Alvin Theatre and played for 165 performances. The director was Peter Brook. The cast included Pearl Bailey, Diahann Carroll, Juanita Hall, Ray Walston, Carmen de Lavallade, Alvin Ailey and Geoffrey Holder (who also provided a section of choreography). Although the show received generally poor reviews, the dance-rhythm infused score has been praised for its mix of blues and calypso. There was an unsuccessful Off-Broadway revival in 1968 at Theater de Lys. In 2003, there was an Encores! production, starring Tonya Pinkins and Armelia McQueen as the battling bordello madams and Maurice Hines as Captain Jonas, the smuggler. The virginal Ottilie was played by Nikki M. James, and the mountain boy, Royal, was played by Brandon Victor Dixon. Roscoe Lee Browne played the voodoo priest, Houngan.   ABOUT BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S Based both on the 1958 Truman Capote novella and 1961 film of the same name, Breakfast at Tiffany's tells the story of a free spirit named Holly Golightly. The musical features music and lyrics by Bob Merrill and a book by Abe Burrows, which was rewritten in previews by legendary playwright Edward Albee. The original cast included Mary Tyler Moore, Richard Chamberlain, Sally Kellerman, Larry Kert and Priscilla Lopez. The production was designed by Oliver Smith, directed by Joseph Anthony and choreographed by Michael Kidd with assistance from Tony Mordente, and produced by David Merrick. Despite the impressive list of collaborators, the project never gelled. The show underwent constant and massive changes in its script and score during out-of-town tryouts. The original book by Abe Burrows was seen in Philadelphia, then scrapped completely, and Edward Albee, an unlikely choice, was hired to re-write before a Boston tryout. Burrows was the original director but left when Albee was brought in. He was replaced by Joseph Anthony. On a daily basis, the cast was given new material hours before curtain time, and the piece was overly long, running nearly four hours. Burrows's departure resulted in low morale among cast members, and Moore was convinced that Merrick planned to fire her soon after opening night. Its original title, Holly Golightly, was changed when it started previews on December 12, 1966, on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre. Despite a healthy advance sale and much audience anticipation, it closed four nights later without having officially opened. Merrick placed an infamous ad in The New York Times, announcing that he shut down the production "rather than subject the drama critics and the public to an excruciatingly boring evening." In 2013, the musical was revived for the first time, using Burrows's book, under the title Holly Golightly, at the 200-seat Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, as part of Ian Marshall Fisher's "Lost Musicals" staged concert series. One reviewer wrote: "the show never seems to come alive [and though] worth excavating out of interest in the form, it is not clear whether it is stageworthy."   ABOUT THE GRASS HARP Based on the 1951 novella by Truman Capote, The Grass Harp tells the story of an orphaned boy and two elderly ladies who observe life from a tree. They eventually leave their temporary retreat to make amends with each other and other members of society. The musical features music by Claibe Richardson and book and lyrics by Kenward Elmslie. The initial 1967 tryout of the musical was performed by Trinity Square Repertory Company at the Rhode Island School of Design auditorium, in Providence, Rhode Island. Directed and staged by Adrian Hall, the cast included Barbara Baxley as Dolly Heart Talbo, Carol Brice as the black maid Catherine Creek, Carol Bruce as Verena Talbo, Elaine Stritch as the evangelist Baby Love. After the Providence tryout, Larry Fineberg optioned the property for Broadway, casting Mama Cass as the evangelist Miss Baby Love. However, Fineberg was unable to raise capital funds, and the producing rights were optioned by Richard Barr. In October 1971, the Michigan University Professional Theatre Program presented The Grass Harp with the university's music and drama departments supplying musicians and performers. Initially as an evaluation by the Broadway producers Richard Barr, Charles Woodward, Michael Harvey, and Associate Producer Michael Kasden. Celeste Holm, a close friend of Claibe Richardson, appeared in the Michigan University Professional Program's production as "Miss Baby Love". She was replaced with Karen Morrow for the Broadway production. The musical adaptation opened on Broadway at the Martin Beck Theatre on November 2, 1971 and closed on November 6, 1971. The cast featured Barbara Cook as Dolly Talbo, Carol Brice as Catherine Creek, Karen Morrow as evangelist Miss Baby Love, Ruth Ford as Verena Talbo, Russ Thacker as Colin Talbo, Max Showalter as Dr. Morris Ritz, John Baragrey as Judge Cool, Kelley Boa, Trudy Bordoff, Colin Duffy, Eva Grant, and David Craig Moskin as Miss Baby Love's orphans, known as the "Heavenly Pride and Joy", Christine Stabile as Maude Riordan, and Harvey Vernon as Sheriff Amos Legrand. The musical previewed and opened during a major New York City newspaper strike preventing advertising and reviews, with no advance theater party ticket sales guarantee. Richard Barr, Charles Woodward, Michael Harvey, and Michael Kasden gave the company the option of maintaining three more weeks for the productions' performance schedule, or closing after only seven performances, using the show's banked funds to produce a Broadway cast album. The musical orchestration was recorded in Cologne, Germany, with the Cologne Symphonic Orchestra ensemble. Returning to the States, the original cast was recorded in New York City, with the album released a year after the musical's closing date.

But as we’ve seen this season, there’s a ton of highly praised films from this year that don’t remotely live up to their hype. Fortunately, this movie does. Unlike most of its counterparts, this movie hopes to capture the spontaneity and magic of a candid moment, of the reactions of characters. Instead of a stodgy film about big characters talking to one another, it’s a film instead of reactions, sudden and gripping. And it’s a film that’s both highly metaphorical while also being incredibly human. It doesn’t hurt to have a lead at the top of his game and a supporting cast of absolute powerhouse actors. Revamped passing games, War babies, bowl games, the new Coaches Poll, and your fists have to be in on your chest now. 2. THE TEAM THE TEAM THE TEAM (starts at 20:41) BACKS: Bill “ol' One-Play" Putich for his 1 TD pass vs MSU. Not a great QB but smart. Was later moved to HB and was captain in 1951. VERY young--he turned 18 this season, as a junior. Real concern that Army was going to draft him ahead of the game. FB: Don Dufek: Chicago. Dad of Don, Bill, and Joe. Team MVP. They know him at Grand Valley as the AD who turned around the department. 702 yards on 174 carries (4 YPC) and 8 TDs--really he was averaging 5 YPC except that OSU game when he had 14 carries for 9 yards. LHB Chuck Ortmann: Star in ‘49 until he was concussed against Army. Hampered by back injury in ‘50 (could hardly bend over). RHB Leo Koceski: Was more of a slot role, see interview. Backups: HB Don Peterson (5’10/175) charging for Leo's job from the start. LHB: Super sophomores: “mighty mites” Frank Howell (5’8/155) (also 3rd string LHB), Wes Bradford (5’6/155) and Don Oldham (5’8/166). Oldham in for Ortmann but awful fumble.  Also Dan Hill who was compared to the shifty return specialist Gene Derricotte. QB: Ted Topor, blocking type, converted fullback. Bill Billings (Flint), passer, go-to signal caller, good punter. Tom Witherspoon is a defensive specialist. ENDS: Sophs expected to take over. Nervous about this position though there’s hope for Perry. LE Lowell Perry (Ypsilanti, teammate of Hill), Fastest guy on the team, end-around maven, quick passing games, and makes guys miss. Also an excellent safety. RE Harry Allis: Longtime starter, stalwart. LE on defense is Ozzie Clark who's also a good TE, a big quasi-tackle. Big game against Ohio State. Backups: Sophs Fred Pickard, a combo TE, and Merrit Green on defense. LINE: Offensive C Carl Kreager. 6’4/220. Won’t wear gloves. Backup: John Padjen 5’9/180, plays C and G. Started football program at TF South in Chicago, his son Tom was HC for 40 years, and grandson John is now HC. RT Al “Brick” Wahl. Star of the team, captain, All-American. Nephew of Herb Stager. He came to Michigan in 1945 from Chicago but joined the Army that summer and missed the ‘46 and ‘47 seasons so he’s now 23 years old and a vet. LT Tom “Big Gun” Johnson born in Chicago but from Muskegon heights. Washed dishes, competed in football and track. Was Alvin Wistert’s backup but by the time he graduated he was one of the greatest tackles in Michigan history (more on defense than offense). Second African-American to play for the Packers, after former teammate Bob Mann a year prior. LT Bill Ohlenroth: Plays when Johnson needs a breather. Defensive RG Tom Kelsey (a converted end) and later soph Jim Wolter are playing a hybrid DL/LB position. Swing OL John Hess Sprained ankle vs Minneosta. OL Ralph Stribe moved to G this year because T was strong. Defensive LG Dick McWilliams: best MG in the country. 6’3/248 and immovable. LINEBACKERS: C Roger Zatkoff (Hamtramck), super sophomore, Meyer Morton Award, has to replace Dick Kempthorn “a 215-pound converted fullback, is a bone-crusher of the Kempthorn school. FB Tony Momsen, moved over from center, punted, blocked OSU punt and recovered it. Backups: Ted Topor (6’0/215) the blocking fullback, and Dick Strowzewski, who also plays T. 3. INTERVIEW WITH HALFBACK LEO KOCESKI (starts at 38:10) Recruiting in the late '40s, the training table rules, coming up under the Mad Magicians, Fritz Crisler's retirement, the Korean War, Dan Dworsky on the piano. The time he tried kicking. The '49 team and the comedown as the next wave takes over. 4. THE GAMES, THE GAMES, THE GAMES (starts at 1:17:33) Toughest season you can get, with most of the Top 10 on the docket, starting with #9 Michigan State College, "The Football Factory" which had recently been admitted to the Big Ten and immediately placed on some kind of double-secret probation, but beat us . Dartmouth was a good team in '49 but lost a lot of guys, Michigan wins 27-7. #2 Army at Yankee Stadium began the cascade of injuries, beat Michigan 6-27. #16 Wisconsin was a nice homecoming game after the 1-2 start, a 26-13 win. But then a trip to #14 Minnesota ends in a 7-7 tie with Michigan routinely stuck on the doorstep, and an 0-7 loss to #10 Illinois in the snow is a season-killer. Or is it? Indiana goes away 20-7, and Michigan defeats a tough Northwestern team 34-23, the only giant not to lose to them. And then there's the snow bowl.   5. ROSE BOWL (1:51:01) Michigan takes the train to Pasadena and beats #5 Cal. Why yes of course Sap has video of it!   Cal controls play in the first half but has their first huge run called back for an illegal formation, and misses an extra point try. Michigan figures out the trick to a team that cut blocks all the time: step back a yard at the snap then go over them. Michigan also learns the short passing game and takes it down the field to deep in Bear territory. Dufek took over from there. 6. WRAP (2:04:18) It will be some time (1964) before we have another Michigan team to profile, so Sap and I go into the future, where Michigan's facilities and hamstrung recruiting are falling behind the rivals, Woody Hayes is building a dynasty in Columbus that still hasn't really gone away, and we preview a coming fight over the Athletic Department head job that'll set the course of Michigan history for the rest of the century. -------------------------------------------- MUSIC "The Third man Theme"—Anton Karas (you should see this film if you haven't) "Double Crossin' Blues"—Johnny Otis with Little Esther & the Robins "If I knew You Were Coming I'd've Baked a Cake"—Al Hoffman, Bob Merrill, and Clem Watts, performed by Eileen Barton "Let It Snow! How tough is that Louis in the window? The one with the funny tale How tough is that Louis in the window? I do hope that Louis won't fail. I must take a ship to Patagonia And leave my poor Fortune at home If she has a heart, she won't be loathsome And dear Louis will have his trombone. How tough is that Louis in the window? The one with the funny tale How tough is that Louis in the window? I do hope that Louis won't fail. Beyond the internet there are planets With flashlights that breathe in delight My love needs a Louis to enthral her Compel her to cry with her might. I don't want Mercury or History, I don't want a Venus that talks, I don't want a bowl of little Neptunes She can't take a Black Hole for a walk. How tough is that Louis in the window? Population: An Epic Problem and A Solution Waiting to Happen

There are too many humans on Earth, it's screwing everything up, and we have to change. There. I said it. Environmentalists used to say this frequently and passionately, and then they stopped:talking about population took on racial overtones ("too many of those brown people!"), or fears of "control" and force, as became the case in China. Meanwhile, there are even more people on Earth, and many more expected, and it's screwing everything up. But don't take my word for it: The only choice...limited number, happy life...meaningful life. Too many...miserable life and always bullying one another, exploiting one another. That's what His Holiness the Dalai Lama says. Would he lie to you? Now here's the good news—we know what works, and it's good for everyone, especially women. But we can't wait. My guest, Joe Bish, is Director of Issue Advocacy for the Population Media Center based here in Vermont. The PMC works through the power of story. Throughout the world, they present locally sourced soap operas—yes, soap operas!— that help people make better decisions about their lives, their health, and how many kids they have. PMC's results are well-studied and powerful. Joe knows population. In this conversation, we talk about how population drives everything from climate change to political instability to extinction, who benefits from population growth (hint: neoliberal economists and pro-growth die hards), how and why PMC's methods work, and why we all need to return the population overshoot problem to center stage. "People" was composed by Jule Styne with original lyrics by Bob Merrill, and is used here via Fair Use of the Copyright Law Section 107.
