Before we dive into that conversation, we wanted to share a few words from Mike Nishi, Chief Operating Officer of the Chicago Marathon, as he explains the goal of this conference and why so many race directors chose to fly to Chicago to trade ideas about producing the safest possible events this fall and beyond. Some of the recent actions of the Biden administration, like bombing Syria and turning hostile against Saudi Arabia and Israel, seem to suggest that Joe Biden is being run by someone else, possibly the Deep State, or what is worse, by the cabal that runs the Democratic party. Vibhuti Jha and Sanjay Dixit discuss who it is that has the brains of Joe Biden under his/her command.

In this month's banter episode, the guys start by wishing each other a happy podiversary, as it has now been over a year since we recorded the first ECT Pod! A huge thank you to all of our friends, guests, and listeners who have gotten us this far. And if it's okay with y'all, we're still feeling it, so we're just gonna keep on doing this thing.Tony and Eli check in on their over/under wagers, none of which are resolved yet. But data points are starting to emerge, some of them courtesy of the Atlanta Track Club, who, almost exactly a year after their triumphant Olympic Marathon Trials, returned to large-scale in-person racing with an approximately three-thousand in-person runner Publix Atlanta Marathon Weekend held at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The guys are very interested to see large-scale racing continue to (safely!) ramp up, including soon at the Woodlands Marathon in Tony's home state of Texas as well as Florida's Gate River Run, which is sold out at 8,000 registrants (half its usual capacity) for its upcoming race. The guys then dive into data, talking about what they learned from Running USA's 2020 Global Running Survey and Run Signup's demographic overview of virtual registrants on their platform. There are great takeaways about DEI and how events need to be willing to lead their consumers in that space (and be willing to leave some behind), as well as insights into who virtual runners really are. The biggest revelation of all, though, comes when Eli realizes that Tony can summarize in fifteen seconds what it takes him five minutes to say.If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review us on Apple podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts, and if you don't ever want to miss an episode be sure to subscribe. True Grit with Craig Kautsch

Ever wonder what it takes to pull off an event like the Cowtown Marathon? An event that has 25k participants, 4500 volunteers, and unpredictable weather (with only 4 full-time staff) Check out this week’s episode of the True Grit Podcast and find out how the Cowtown has become one of America’s Favorite Marathon events.I had a super enlightening interview with Heidi Swartz, the Executive Director of The Cowtown Marathon. With Heidi’s direction, the event has nearly tripled in size since 2004, with over 25,000 participants and seven races taking place the last weekend in February. In 2006, she created The Cowtown Marathon's associated non-profit organization, C.A.L.F. (Children's Activities for Life and Fitness), which in the past 11 years has provided over 40,000 pairs of running shoes to disadvantaged children along with greatly reduced entry fees for The Cowtown Kids 5K Run.By bringing fitness awareness and running enthusiasm to local schools, Swartz – a runner, herself – is invested in making the City of Fort Worth a healthier place to live. Swartz was awarded the Great Women of Texas award in 2016. She served on the original committee that formed "FitWorth," the Mayor of Fort Worth's healthy living initiative, and remained on the board serving as secretary. She serves on the Marketing Advisory Board for Visit Fort Worth, the Board of Directors for the Fort Worth Sports Commission, and serves as Secretary for the National Trade Organization, Running USA. Heidi Swartz is also a successful and in-demand speaker and consultant for other race events, acting as an expert in race management and producing multiple events throughout the year.Useful Links:Cowtown Marathon

Eli is playing a road game for this episode, recording from his father's kitchen in Portland, Maine. He's there helping his dad out after a knee replacement surgery, which his (non-runner) dad had to have because (as Eli rants about a bit) running isn't actually any worse for you knees than any other activity! (And his dad's recovery is going well, thanks for asking.)With prompting from Eli, Tony gives an update about how his new virtual event, the Texas Distance Challenge, is going (short version: really well!). Tony compares what he hopes to accomplish with TDC (as the cool kids call it) to eating healthy as opposed to dieting and also explains why distance challenges should lean into their storytelling and maybe rely a little less on leaderboards. After sticking his neck out to test his theories (that we've all heard him presenting on at industry conferences for the last few years) by rolling out this event, it's a good thing for Tony that TDC is going as well as it is! And if you're interested in licensing the idea for your market, he's open to it...The co-hosts then dive into a big topic that Eli somehow overlooked while planning for this week's episode (although it's not always apparent, we actually prepare for our recording sessions!): Spartan's return to in-person racing. (The video of the Running USA webinar mentioned in this segment can be found here.) While Tony and Eli are both skeptical that any in-person event can be done perfectly safely, there are some good takeaways from what Spartan did that can be applied at any event. Finally, Tony IDs three questions that every event that wants to emulate Spartan and return to in-person racing needs to ask itself before returning to in-person racing:What is your organizational risk tolerance? What is your market's (participant and state/municipal) risk tolerance? And are your pockets deep enough to do everything that needs to be done?Eli then really strongly encourages everyone to build systems for their return to racing that don't just barely hit minimum standards but have enough slack in the system to deal with things not going exactly as planned. On another quixotic hashtag-pushing quest, he encourages everyone to build environmental safety and operations plans that are robust enough to #absorbtheassholes. (Tony wants to make 100% clear that he not only doesn't endorse this hashtag but that as his "risky click of the day" he also doesn't think you should use or search for it; the more-benign #returntoracing he is more tolerant towards.)If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review us on Apple podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts, and don't forget to subscribe. Sarah and Amanda Loudin talk about what races might be like once they get back up and running. Then, in the second half of the episode, the Missoula Marathon director joins the mother runner duo to talk about the cancellation (sniff, sniff) of that June race, which Sarah has been training for. Sharing knowledge gained through Running USA, Amanda details: alternatives and modifications to future race expos; the “minefield” of a race corral in the age of coronavirus; how masks and carry-with-you collapsible cups will become new marketing platforms; having to “make do with less” when it comes to race volunteers; and, how “it’s going to take a lot of ingenuity to figure out a way forward.” In the intro chitchat, Sarah offers viewing recommendations, including Hulu’s Mrs. America and Never Have I Ever on Netflix. We start this weeks show with the statement "if you are in your mid sixties and think your best years are behind you, think again". At the age of 62 and at 335 pounds Sue Reynolds started a journey that started with a walk to a neighbors house and back. Step by step, goal by goal, she discovered running and then triathlon and completely transformed her body and life. I go to UCAN energy drink or a UCAN bar to keep my hunger satisfied and carry me through a daily marathon of meetings to keep me energized and productive. My favorite bar is the coffee flavor, but they have two new flavors - chocolate/almond butter and salted peanut butter which have been a hit.   Hey, since you are not racing, this is a great time to experiment with new nutrition in your training, something that is completely different than other sports nutrition out there. Maurya Couvares, an assistant coach for the Wagner women’s triathlon team in Staten Island, New York, is one of many swimmers who has been forced to get creative in the comfort of her own home while Olympic-sized swimming pools are not an option. “Without a pool, swimmers can use stretch cords to continue working on swim-specific muscular endurance and fitness,” Couvares said. “Typically stretch cord workouts can be much shorter than a pool workout — anywhere from 5-25 minutes depending on fitness level and experience. Workouts can be structured as a short warm-up followed by a set of 'on' and 'off' intervals (for example, moving your arms as you would in freestyle swim for 30 seconds, taking 30 seconds off, then repeating 10 times). When using stretch cords it's important to remember the key technical part of each swim stroke. That’s not a typo – the New York Roadrunners, the organization that plans running events including the New York City Marathon, engages 23,000 volunteers a year. Erika Amaya joins us to talk about how she couldn’t make that happen without volunteer leaders. As the manager of a “mega program” that engages over 23,000 volunteers a year, volunteer leadership is critical.  But, in recent years, the New York Road Runners found they were losing the legacy volunteers they had counted on for so many years due to volunteer retirements.  So, they took action and revamped their volunteer leadership training and development program. They started with the end in mind, planning for three years out and focusing their approach on trials and iteration. They gathered feedback from volunteers and event coordinators, defined roles more concretely, and developed a ‘core mile captain’ training, and added more social elements to the volunteer experience. It took them five years to refine their work into a standardized leadership development program and succession pipeline for their race captains. Now, they begin recruitment for the next year the day after a race, and enjoy a full complement of volunteer leaders who help them run this large initiative. Hello "Feel Good" Runners! How is everyone?  All good? Running well?  As we wind down April, the Boston Marathon is now behind us. The weather seemed to have held up well and some really great running stories came out of the marathon this year. I feature a few of them in my news segment.  Congratulations to all of you that participated this year and hope you had a great time. This episode I talk about the Boston Marathon and the news segment include a few inspirational stories from this years race.  If you ran it, consider sending a voice message and share how your run was this year. Just click the orange tap on the right of the page and you will have three minutes. My guest's this episode are a wonderful Maui couple, Sam & Lindsey Wilbur.  Lindsey is one of the top female runners here on Maui and she also runs marathons. She has completed 18 full marathons and 5 have been Boston. Earlier this month she did the Rotterdam Marathon in the Netherlands. Lindsey's husband Sam is a former runner and had aspirations to be on the Olympic team. A professional runner for New Balance he made 5 USATF National Teams and competed in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic trials in the Steeplechase but got eliminated in the semi-finals each time.  Retiring from running in 2002,  he now dabbles as an individual running coach and operates a small race management business, Maui Running (https://www.mauirunning.com/) . This company puts on several corporate fun runs each year on the island. Sam's passion and #1 goal is to travel to every country in the world.  He has already traveled to 107 countries out of 196 so he has 89 to go.  And he travels expending very little money which he does churning credit cards. Please don't try this unless you are a very detailed person.  World Wide Wilbur (http://www.worldwidewilbur.com/) . With everything going on in Sam & Lindsey's live their most important job is being parents to two wonderful boys! Also during my opening, I talk about my frustration recently heading out for a run and my watch beeps low battery. This is user error on my part and I have no idea what is wrong with me. Post it notes might be my ticket to remember to do things! Aside from talking about this years Boston Marathon, I finish up with some interesting statistics (STATS!) from the recently released 2018 National Runner Survey from (https://runningusa.org/) . And finally I thank you so much for listening. I enjoy brining to you this Podcast 2 times per month and hope to expand it more in the future. It does take quite a bit of time and right now we do not have sponsors or any type of income for the show. I do this because I love doing it but hope to attract sponsors in the future. That said, I could really use your help by sharing the Podcast with your running friends and through Social Media. And also important is to leave a review on Apple Podcast!  Reviews help to increase exposure for the show and attracts new listeners. So if you can do this for me I can keep bringing you a good running podcast. I appreciate all my listeners! Enjoy Episode #11... There are so many ways to know thyself, and we are going to dive into these ways this year on the show.  The coolest part about the journey inwards is that we resonate with different tools, learning, and practices at different times. I remember when I first had my astrological chart read by a true master. It was an extremely powerful experience.  The knowledge gained about my path on that one reading, I still think about today. There are so many different ways to explore who we are and my guidance is always to feel what calls to you. What resonates? It is not so much about trying everything at the same time, in fact, that can get quite overwhelming. When we get overwhelmed we tend to stop or shut down.  So, go at your own pace, seek out your own path base on how you feel in your body.  What is speaking to you?  Start there and always listen within for what resonates as truth to you. I have learned over the years of exploration that my personal truth resides within me, in my body; and if I listen, I can trust it's wisdom on what the next best steps are for me. DOWNLOAD THE MIRACLE MEDITATION NOW! In this episode, I asked my guest to share insights on two different modalities we can use to know thyself better.  Did you know you can do a reading with a deck of playing cards?  Well, you can you are going to hear some fascinating facts about what we can gather from spades, clubs, diamonds, and hearts in this episode. We also started to talk briefly about a system of self-knowledge called Human Design.  It would take over two hours to get an entire Human Design reading, so this is just the tip of the iceberg.  To check out what a Human Design chart looks like, see the picture below. We will be talking more on Human Design next month as well. IN THIS PODCAST EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT The benefits of knowing thyself better What information you can gather about yourself from a deck of playing cards What is conditioning? A few nuggets about Human Design (more on this soon!) What does an open center mean in Human Design? Intuitive healer/counselor and medical intuitive, Peter Roth, joined me on the show today.  After exploring many creative and business pursuits, such as being a photographer, becoming an author of Running USA, producing the movie “On the Edge” starring Bruce Dern, founding and being a director of the NYC Marathon, and twelve years of running a manufacturing company, the constant that seemed to entwine his interests was a desire to know how to help people reduce their confusions, inadequacy, and pain. Peter felt drawn to help clients intuitively by analyzing the many energies that emanate, not only from bodies but from the deeper part of the soul.  His job is to bring people out of pain and help them feel whole.
