One day, my friend Natalie Sisson stood in a park, rain pouring down on her, and cried. She had been feeling down for weeks. What was the matter with her? While she was feeling sorry for herself, a loud, internal voice suddenly told her: Suck it up, princess. She laughed at her own rudeness. Had she really just said that to herself? Then she realised it had been exactly what she needed. Later that day, she decided to make it the title of her new book. Like Natalie, we all have moments when we feel down, pity ourselves, or are negative about pretty much everything that surrounds us. The key to overcoming such a state is to know how to get out of it. In this episode, Natalie speaks about her book Suck It Up, Princess – and how you can get over yourself so you're ready to achieve your goals. “There's something empowering about being direct with yourself and taking control and responsibility for how you're feeling.” - Natalie Sisson If you're more of a reader, scroll down to read about what you can do to suck it up and get over what's keeping you from achieving your goals. In this Episode of The Sigrun Show: How Suck It Up, Princess is different from Natalie's first books and how she developed as an author (2:51) Why Natalie's new book is more personal (4:47) How Natalie went from being the suitcase entrepreneur to settling down (6:52) What the title of Natalie's book is all about (11:03) Natalie's tips on what to do when you need to suck it up and get over yourself (14:29) How Natalie's passion for sports has shaped her (19:33) How to Get Over Yourself and Achieve Your Goals We all have moments of anxiety and frustration, but did you ever notice that the dominant element in these situations is you and your thoughts? While there are definitely times for self-compassion and going easy on yourself, Natalie says there's also something empowering about being direct with yourself and taking control and responsibility for how you are feeling. Here's how: Take one actionable step Interrupting your pattern and taking one simple step towards what you want can work wonders. Taking action and getting out of your head gives you a moment to disengage from negative thoughts. Maybe it only needs writing one email, doing one call, or spending five minutes in a yoga class. Being in a state of taking action and making a positive step is something that gets you out of almost anything. Put your situation into perspective Can it be that we have become a bit soft, entitled even? Natalie believes so, that's why she included Princess in the title of her book. No matter what's going on with you – it's very possible that it pales in comparison to someone else's problems. Put your situation into perspective and at the same time, be your own motivator. Developing resilience and inner strength, as well as an understanding that your situation might not be as bad as you believe can help get you out of your frustration and closer to your goals. What do you do to get over yourself and navigate out of a low? I'd love to hear from you! You can follow, connect and share with me on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. ‘When we're talking about diversity, it's not a box to check. It is a reality that should be deeply felt and held and valued by all of us.’ This is a quote by Ava DuVernay that rings true in many ways throughout our conversation with today’s guest, Natalie Paterson. Natalie is a spoken word artist, educator, and activist and in today’s show, we talk to her about her relationship with poetry and how she is using it as a tool to build a more transparent, vulnerable, and equitable world. We begin with the story of Natalie’s childhood, where she remembers moving from Kokomo, Indiana to LA with her mother after her father fell into addiction. Natalie talks about having an early interest in the dynamics between people and shares how the effacement around her mother and father’s relationship gave her a tendency to want to get to the bottom of things and state them as they are. From there, we get into Natalie’s experiences at school and college, years where she discovered the magic of poetry, began obsessively writing poems of her own, and also got involved in activism against racism. Natalie goes onto describe the live poetry events she began attending, communities she became apart of, and her first, terrifying experiences of performing live. We then hear about the early career Natalie began to build for herself, first as a slam poet, and then later as a teacher and activist. In today's conversation, we also take a deep dive into Natalie’s process, hearing the philosophy about how she sees herself as an artist as well as the goals behind her work. In addition, we explore issues of combatting racism and other violent societal norms, and how Natalie has done this at various stages in her life, including through her mural initiative, A Love Language Project, which was responsible for painting the above Ava DuVernay quote on a vegan cafe in Los Angeles. Tune in today!Key Points From This Episode:A recording of two poems exploring dating and body positivity by Natalie. The story of why Natalie’s mom left her father and moved from Kokomo to LA.How her parents’ dynamic and growing up with no father affected Natalie. The habit of directness Natalie developed as a result of her childhood experiences. Why Natalie’s childhood wasn’t that fun and she was more interested in people than toys.Natalie’s childhood perceptions about people, adulthood, marriage, and her future self. How Natalie experienced being Black and used her identity as a light-skinned Black person in high school. The experiences Natalie had of hearing poetry that made her fall in love with it.How Natalie regularly visited Da Poetry Lounge and began working on her own poems.Natalie’s memory of how terrified she was when she read her first poem on stage.Struggling with what it means to be a true poet and some of Natalie’s idols at the time. How Natalie took a year off college to pursue poetry and joined the LA Slam Team. How Natalie fell into teaching after experiencing the dishonest sides of the poetry scene.

Natalie started her career at Shine in 2003 before launching Aduro in 2012. Aduro has a turnover of £1m and employs 10 people. It specialises in consumer focused public relations work.[00:00:54] Why Natalie describes Aduro as the “Ronseal of PR”.[00:02:56] Why Natalie believes it is possible to isolate the impact of PR in a consumer market where there are numerous promotional channels. [00:03:52] How working with entrepreneurs showed Natalie that if she could demonstrate the impact of PR on the entrepreneurs’ businesses, their businesses would grow and they would spend more on PR. [00:05:59] How Aduro has developed a model where it believes it can confidently point to its sales impact.[00:07:08] Why internally there is a need for PR to be able to define its cost per acquisition.[00:08:21] Why clients should own their evaluation and measurement insight, rather than farming the whole thing out to agencies.[00:09:15] How Aduro, as a consumer agency, is asking questions of clients’ evaluation methods that the clients haven't been asked before. [00:11:55] Why Natalie never, never set out to establish her own agency.[00:12:21] Why launching Aduro threw up an opportunity for creating flexible working and a genuine balance for Natalie.[00:13:04] Why Rachel Bell has a stake in Aduro.[00:13:41] Why Natalie started Aduro whilst living in Shropshire.[00:15:15] Why Natalie regards Aduro's growth as the "tortoise to some people's hare" but the slow and steady approach has worked for her. [00:15:19] Why setting up Aduro has enabled Natalie to "grow a business around having two children". [00:16:07] Why Natalie going on maternity leave early on in Aduro's "life" has meant that not everything in the business needs to flow through her. [00:16:34] What was it about having Rachel Bell as a mentor that helped Natalie grow the business?[00:17:24] How having a mentor has helped Natalie with things like the importance of business planning, networking, structure and having a five-year plan.[00:17:43] Why Natalie believes having a financial director has been one of the most important things in the progression of Aduro.[00:19:34] Why Natalie wouldn't have launched Aduro without Rachel Bell. [00:21:01] What flexible working means – because it's become quite a broad term. [00:23:28] What are the drawbacks of flexible working?[00:25:25] Can you achieve as good a result for the client if the team is working flexibly? [00:27:54] How does an agency begin the process of making flexible working work? [00:28:00] Why, for flexible working to work in a firm, you need some of the key senior people in the business to work flexibly. [00:28:42] Does Natalie believe PR still has a long working hours problem? [00:29:12] Why Natalie believes that it's now unacceptable for PR firms to have a long hours culture. [00:29:44] Why, from a timesheet perspective, agencies should be resourced at approximately 60-70% of employees time, anything more than that is not realistic and will result in staff working overtime.[00:31:41] Why PR firms need to get better at saying no to clients. [00:33:03] Why overservicing has decreased as the standard of PR work has increased.[00:33:59] Whether PR has a mental health issue greater than other elements of society. [00:36:21] Why Aduro has resigned from a number of accounts.[00:36:55] The importance of a genuinely positive client relationship where you can grow together.[00:40:06] Why does Natalie think there are co
Wingnut Social: The Interior Design Business and Marketing Podcast
Everyone tells you that you need to be an “influencer” on Instagram. But what does that really mean? Does that mean you should have 10,000 followers, 20,000 followers? Does it mean brands are knocking down your door to work with you? There’s no one key number that will grant you magical influencer status, but if you can really make your personality shine on social media, you will build a following. And more importantly, you’ll connect with that following. Case in point: Today’s guest on the Wingnut Social podcast, Natalie Reddell. Natalie is an interior designer based in Richmond, Virginia, and under her social media nom de guerre Commander-in-Chic, she’s made a name for herself in both the interior design social media sphere and the lifestyle/beauty worlds. On this episode, Natalie discusses how she grew her following on Instagram, how she navigates speaking two different audiences, and what makes her #struggle videos connect so strongly with audiences. And let’s just say her personality is not restricted to Instagram. What You’ll Hear On This Episode of Wingnut Social [2:45] News about some upcoming live events for Darla [5:55] Does Natalie know Darla is stalking her? [9:30] Why Natalie bailed on Twitter [12:30] How Natalie got started with IGTV [17:00] Be on Team Instagram [21:45] Why you should be reaching out to brands [28:30] How Natalie started her Commander-in-Chic brand [34:25] Whut up, Wingnut? [39:45] Takeaways Connect with Natalie Reddell Natalie on Instagram Natalie on Amazon Resources & People Mentioned LuAnn Live Interior Design and Decoration Eat That Frog Malcolm Gladwell’s books Get your Audible Free Trial! Have fun on Instagram Darla asked Natalie how she got started making her #struggle videos, and even though the videos are about her struggles, she says she started doing them because they’re fun. As she says, no matter how much good intention you have, if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing on social media, eventually you’re going to stop. So you have to have fun, and then your audience will have fun with you, too. Natalie is a living, breathing example of what Wingnut Social always preaches: Be authentic, be yourself, and people will follow you. As you’ll hear on this episode, Natalie has a story to tell, and because she does it with so much personality, people want to hear it. Be on Team Instagram Like all of us, Natalie saw some of her engagement on Instagram fade away when the platform changed its algorithm. But, she says it has gotten better, and one of the reasons that’s gotten better for her is because she has been an early adopter of new Instagram features. So when IG put out IGTV, she hopped on right away, and she found they reward adopting new features. You only get seen by 10% of your followers now, which is obviously very frustrating. But, if you adopt new features IG puts out, whether it’s stories, or live, you’ll pop up more. They want their users to be using all of the bells and whistles, and your followers will get notified if you go live, so it’s an if-you-can’t-beat-’em-join-’em approach to social media, and it’s worked like gangbusters for Natalie. Natalie Tran has spent her entire adulthood on YouTube. Not literally. But she first published videos to YouTube in 2006 when she was 20 and she kept going. Well, until recently. In public, Natalie appears confident and articulate, and as the owner of a savage wit and powerful brain. She's at ease in her honesty and with what makes her feel vulnerable but she also deals with a noisy head and has spent long periods not leaving her home and not moving much between rooms in her home. I really appreciate Natalie sharing her experience with us in this chat. She's an incredible spirit. We discuss: - The early days of YouTube - How YouTube has changed - How Natalie approaches her writing and projects - Living with OCD and supporting someone with OCD - Getting older - Why Natalie doesn't own a TV station or have a national TV show You can find Natalie at http://www.twitter.com/natalietran and https://www.youtube.com/user/communitychannel For strategy courses and more, check out http://courses.sweathead.co
Today’s guest is very special, because unknowingly, she had a very fundamental role in the formation of this podcast. Because of the work that she is doing, I have been able to connect with my own intuition and spirit guides to make this podcast a reality. If it hadn’t been for the messages that Natalie Miles was putting out into our world, and my own little nudges from spirit and the life lessons along the way, I wouldn’t have put it all together – well, at least not as clearly and as quickly! Natalie Miles is an international Spiritual Guide, Psychic, Mentor and Entrepreneur. She has cultivated her life’s work in an esoteric industry with a legitimate business that grounds the spiritual realm in the now, but it wasn’t what she was always doing. Natalie was born and raised in the U.K., connecting with her Spirit Guide at the age of five, Natalie’s gift was always a backdrop as she moved through life. At the age of sixteen, she truly began to develop her skills by attending small groups educating on improving intuition and psychic abilities. It was here where she unlocked her natural gifts working with Spirit to share messages with others. After working for 10 years in the film industry as a producer, she could no longer ignore the calling of her Spirit Guide and began working with Spirit full-time. Natalie’s mission is to support ones spiritual journey by sharing, The Spirit Upgrade. This upgrade connects people with their guides –in other words, cheerleaders in the spiritual realm. Spirit guides help find the answers ones seek, and clear any blocks in the way. Working with guides will heal the past, and help people feel a sense of empowerment. Natalie has been guided by Spirit to use her gifts to open the door and be the “upgrade” messenger, illuminating the light onto other people’s life paths. Her goal is to inspire people across the globe to connect with their own Spirit Guides, so they can feel more connected, each and every day, and continue an upgraded soul journey. Natalie does this work through three major sessions: The Soul Upgrade, The Mediumship Upgrade, and The Past Life Upgrade, and either in-person or through telephone or via Skype. After all, she says, distance is no barrier for the Spirit! Spirit Guides will bring up exactly what needs to be discussed during that session and her clients are always taken aback that what comes through, is exactly what they needed to hear. Natalie does more than what most psychics and mediums do, she is a form of a life coach as well, where she offers an opportunity for souls to learn and grow. I’m excited and honoured to have Natalie on the Fempower podcast today, and it turns out it is episode 11, which if you follow angel numbers will know that it is the karmic Master Number 11 and symbolizes the principles of spiritual awakening and enlightenment, high energy, idealism, inspiration and intuition, illumination, visionary, enthusiasm, creative/creativity, self-expression and sensitivity, and mysticism. Number 11 tells us that to connect with our higher-selves is to know and live our soul mission and life purpose. Master Number 11 is usually called 'the Illuminator', 'the Messenger' or 'the Teacher' and relates to those who are here to be inspirational guiding lights, and their mission is to bring illumination to others and to help raise spiritual awareness. This wasn’t planned this way, as I’m just going with the flow, and yet it is so perfectly aligned. I bet Natalie will be smiling when she find out! I think you are really going to like this episode – it’s full of practical ways to grow your intuition, connect with your spirit guides, and in turn develop your self-awareness further which will enhance your confidence and lead to your empowerment – it truly is a chain reaction and it begins with these fundamental steps. And, you’ll have some fun along the way as this episode gets hijacked by one of my deceased loved ones! My grandfather shows up to play some tricks and have some fun with us. I’ve left it in there so you can see for yourself how we lost the connection, but everything kept recording so we could have the evidence of his playfulness – this normally doesn’t happen for me! Usually, if I lose the connection I lose the recording and yet somehow we were able to keep it all here. Thank you Grandpa! Natalie even goes into the details to clarify which of my three grandfathers it could be – and I definitely knew which one it was right from the outset. My grandfather even gives me a message when we ask if he has something to share. You are going to want to hear this. It is so fascinating and exactly on point. Natalie wouldn’t have known anything of this as we only spoke for the first time here. She is so sharp and in-tune and such an earth angel. We are lucky to have her on the show today! Enjoy this episode and may all the practical tools help you in your journey to enlightenment and empowerment so that you too may spread more of your light. #113: Natalie Sisson was tired of the corporate world. She wanted freedom, adventure and fulfillment. In 2008, she quit her job and co-founded a tech company -- but soon she discovered that running a company felt a lot like having a day job. Two years later, she quit her own company in order to truly strike out on her own. Since 2010, Natalie has run an online business from her laptop while traveling the globe. She's visited 70 countries, living out of a suitcase while running a lucrative six-figure business. She also owns investment real estate in Portugal and New Zealand. In this interview, Natalie and I discuss: - The four phases of entrepreneurship: The Dreamer, The Hustler, The Superhero and The Freedomist. - Why Natalie transitioned from a steady paycheck to the financially volatile life of an entrepreneur. - How Natalie coped when her bank account dwindled to her last $17. - The major family crisis that reinforced why freedom and flexibility matter more than any job. - How she bought a property in a foreign country. - How she manages an Airbnb rental property from halfway around the world. - Why a minimalist attitude towards possessions is crucial for a traveler and entrepreneur. This is part two of my conversation with Natalie Sisson. Listen to part 1! Special heads up! If you want to be one of the first to know about Natalie’s Freedom Plan, then join the list! This show is about building your legend, and how travel provides you the opportunity to do so. And today’s guest is a shining example of what I mean when I say this. Natalie Sisson goes by the superhero moniker of The Suitcase Entrepreneur, as which she flies around the world saving people from the dull nagging ache of routine, that I talk about a lot on this show, by helping them to – in her words – choose freedom in business and adventure in life. She’s been to at least 70 countries, co-founded startups, played professional sports, been a pro bodybuilder, written multiple books, has her own podcast, blog, all of which converge to help her run her own lifestyle business. Today she sets an example and helps others find fulfillment and experience in life. I’m excited to delve into Natalie The Traveler, why travel’s important to her, and then explore how she does what she does.
