So here's the thing. I know I talk a lot about reading. It's pretty important to me. But all week I've been trying to prepare a different podcast, one NOT about the uncrackable justification for choice reading. But recently I heard from several teachers over in CHSE about thriving reading programs they had going, only to get shut down by folks who felt like reading in class was a waste of time. And then I kind of ended up in a rabbit hole, as I am wont to do. It's like researching the justification for choice reading became my guilty pleasure, sucking up all my time. I listened to audiobooks on my walks, pored over research roundups and articles at the coffee shop, hit up the hammock with my Penny Kittle, and stared and stared and stared at the growing evidence mounting in my endless Google doc of notes. The evidence is clear. The need for help for kids who don't read, don't like reading, and don't want to read is great. And yet STILL we are prioritizing reading snippets and drilling for tests to "improve" our readers' reading. I want you to have the information you need to fight. So here I am. Again. Despite my efforts to focus on something else this week. Let's dig deep. Item analysis can sound intimidating, especially for educators who were trained as clinicians first and teachers second. But when used well, it can become one of the most valuable tools for improving assessments, clarifying instruction, and supporting student success. In this episode of Airway Exchange, hosts Erin and Louisa welcome in Valerie Diaz, DNP, CRNA, PMHNP-BC, APRN, CNE, CHSE, FAANA, CAPT (Ret), USN and Pedro Hernandez, DNP, CRNA, APRN to break down the importance of item analysis, a topic they presented at AANA's EDGE event earlier this year. Just as CRNAs constantly refine their clinical practice, educators should continually evaluate, reflect, and improve the tools they use to assess learning. Neulich konnte ich mal wieder das Leben in vollen Zügen genießen. Wie das halt so ist, wenn die Bahn den ICE im schönen Bahnhof von Fulda eine Stunde vor sich hin stehen und die Leute aus dem hinteren Teil umsteigen lässt in den vorderen, weil – ach so: keine Begründung, die Lautsprecheranlage funktionierte (auch) nicht. Vielleicht hätte man die Zeit nutzen sollen, um im Bordbistro das neue Angebot der Bahn durchprobieren sollen: einen Sekt und drei Weine (zwei weiß, einer rot). Vielleicht sogar vor Ort gleich mit dem bis dato unbekannten Fahrgast gegenüber einen Podcast aufnehmen, live und emotional, situationsbedingt. Aber froh über die Gnade eines eigenen Sitzplatzes blieb ich auf selbigem und vertagte die Probe auf später – das Deutsche Weininstitut (DWI), das der Bahn bei der Wahl der Weine beratend zur Seite stand, hatte mir die vier kleinen Flaschen ja nach Hause geschickt. So waren sie auf jeden Fall korrekt temperiert und bildeten im kühlen Podcast Studio Rdbl. (kein planmäßiger ICE-Halt) die Grundlage des ersten Teils der Folge 178 von "Auf ein Glas". In this episode, Pediatric Nursing Editor Dr. Tedra Smith, talks with 2025 Donna Wong Award winner Briana Keller, a PhD Candidate at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, about her article published in the November/December 2025 issue titled “'I Can't Complain Because at Least I Still Have My Child': Disenfranchised Grief Among Mothers of Chronically Ill Adolescents.” Ms. Keller discusses the intangible and often overlooked loss parents of chronically ill children may experience, and emphasizes the importance of recognizing and supporting that grief. Initially set out to explore ambiguous loss amongst chronically ill adolescents, she explains how interviews with caregivers unearthed a less discussed hurt – disenfranchised grief. She shares her experiences in studying this topic, including one particular interview in which a mother felt she could not complain because at least she still had her child. Ms. Keller continues on to discuss how health care providers can support both parent and child from diagnosis and beyond.Briana P. Dr. Wittmann-Price received her AAS and BSN degrees from Felician College, Lodi, New Jersey, and her MS as a perinatal clinical nurse specialist (CNS) from Columbia University, New York, New York. She completed her PhD in nursing at Widener University, Chester, Pennsylvania, and received the Dean's Award for Excellence. Ruth developed a mid-range nursing theory, “Emancipated Decision-Making in Women's Health Care,” and has tested her theory in four research studies. International researchers are currently using her theory as the foundation for their studies. Her theory is being used by researchers at the University of Limpopo, South Africa, in their campaign, “Finding Solutions for Africa,” which helps women and children. Dr. Wittmann-Price has taught all levels of nursing students over the past 30 years and has completed international service-learning trips. She has coedited or authored 16 books, contributed many chapters, and written numerous articles. She has presented her research regionally, nationally, and internationally. Dr. Wittmann-Price was inducted into the National League for Nursing Academy of Nurse Educator Fellows in 2013 and became a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in October 2015.
