Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms make their home in the San Juan Islands, in Washington State, and their latest spring tour saw them make a stop at the Albino Skunk Music Festival in May 2025. This was two weeks ahead of their own festival, the inaugural East Sound Music Ramble, and part of an eastern swing that preceded other engagements including Telluride Bluegrass Festival. The duo has been very much on the go lately, which is in keeping with their recent past: sojourns to Louisiana, to celebrate the music of Cajun and country legend Jimmy C Newman; to The Last Frontier state for the Alaska Folk Festival; and to Vermont, where Caleb connected with Noam Pikelny, which led to becoming a guest member of bluegrass supergroup Mighty Poplar, to name a few. I spoke with Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms on a picture perfect spring afternoon in Greer, SC, in between their two sets at Skunk Fest, where we touched on all of these travels, both physical and musical; their own region's musical “rogue-ness”; the raw simplicity and danceability of their take on country music; and the importance of slowing down and being present. That and more awaits you, including their music, both live and on record, in this episode. Since forming in 2004, Lake Street Dive have matched their sophisticated musicianship with a fearless refusal to limit their sound. As shown on their most recent album, 2021's critically acclaimed Obviously, the Boston-bred band also possess a keen talent for combining socio-political commentary with immediately catchy pop gems. Over the years, they've captivated massive audiences at such esteemed festivals as Newport Folk Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and Toronto Jazz Festival, in addition to headlining tours all across the globe and sharing stages with acts like Brandi Carlile and Sheryl Crow. And through their fierce commitment to constantly elevating their artistry, Lake Street Dive have ultimately emerged as one of the most compelling voices in alternative music today, both reliably sublime and thrillingly unpredictable. With their current lineup comprised of founding members Rachael Price (vocals), Bridget Kearney (bass), and Michael Calabrese (drums)—as well as keyboardist/vocalist Akie Bermiss and touring guitarist James Cornelison—Lake Street Dive continue to create joyously soulful rock & roll with equal parts ingenuity, intelligence, and irresistible abandon. In recent years, Lake Street Dive have brought even more boldness to their kaleidoscopic sound while deliberately expanding their songcraft. To that end, Obviously finds the band examining such complex matters as gender inequality (on “Being a Woman”) and the monumental challenges faced by younger generations (on “Making Do”), shaping each track with a profound intentionality and ineffable mastery of melody and groove—a process Price refers to as “putting these messages into three and a half minute snippets, dropping whatever truth we can and hoping it's the type of thing that people want to ruminate on.” Made with producer Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Mary J. Blige), the result is an endlessly illuminating body of work that's earned praise from the likes of Rolling Stone (who noted that “at a moment when pop strives for lo-fi, solitary-world intimacy, the jazz-pop whatever band refuses to think small”). This episode features recordings from Lake Street Dive's 2022 performance at Big Top Chautauqua.       First broadcast in 1994, Tent Show Radio is a weekly one-hour radio program showcasing the best live recordings from acclaimed music acts and entertainers who grace the Big Top Chautauqua stage each summer in beautiful Bayfield, WI. In the program's nearly 30-year history it has featured artists like Johnny Cash, B.B King, Brandi Carlile, Willie Nelson, Don McLean, and many more. Unfortunately her partner was less than supportive when it came to her continuing to pursue her music and, as tensions mounted, Kerri was pretty much forced to put her career aside.  Singer-songwriter Kerri Powers channels blues and soul with an eye-to-eye, earthy sensibility that makes for honest listening and reflection. She's your sage girlfriend speaking from the heart and does so with a new collection of songs written from a place of grief and longing - something that speaks to us all. With Love is Why, Powers' first full-length album since 2018 to be released on October 28th, the New England-based artist explores the universal emotion that is love and its huge influence on the decisions we all make in life. In particular, she examines love in the context of holding on or letting go through human loss and grieving. The album's original songs were written during the pandemic and after Powers lost her father, whom she calls “my best friend.” “I wrote the songs from a place of loss and grieving and went from there,” she says. “Writing the songs was hard but a necessary part of healing. At the end of the day, all the songs were written from a place of love for humanity and the need to spread the message that love is essential.” Love is Why was recorded in February 2021 at Dagotown Recorders in Boston. Produced by drummer Marco Giovino and engineered by Sam Margolis. For more on Kerri log onto her website: https://www.kerripowers.com/

Tim O'Brien is one of Bluegrass' beloved players, from his work with the innovative Hot Rize to his yearly appearances at The Telluride Bluegrass Festival. He's just released his first album of all original material, which is something to be said for his 50 year career. At 69 years old, it's no surprise that the theme of aging pops up on quite a few of his new songs. He opens up about his perspective on aging and what it has looked for his predecessors in Bluegrass. He reflects on his history, from choosing Colorado to over New York or L.A. to being very aware of how hard it was for his sister, Mollie O'Brien, to have a solo career and be a parent.Nicknamed Red, Tim O'Brien serves as hero and mentor to many of today's finest players in the genre including Sarah Jarosz and Chris Thile. He recognizes the importance of allowing younger generations to step into the spotlight, while still being ready to honor his own Bluegrass heroes. In our conversation, Tim gets into things he's noticed changing for the better in his scene and also talks about how technology is both a good and challenging thing. For instance, In-ear monitors are great, HOWEVER, they really isolate the players instead of really feeling like they are playing together. Charlotte Bell has been practicing yoga since 1982, and began teaching in 1986. She has established and taught regular classes along Utah's Wasatch Front, and in California and Hawaii. She also teaches workshops, teacher trainings, and yoga for cancer patients and their families at Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City. She has taught at national yoga conferences and international yoga teacher trainings and on women's river trips on the Green and Colorado rivers. Certified by B.K.S. Iyengar in 1989, she enjoys learning from teachers of many different yogic perspectives. Charlotte's asana teaching has been most influenced by her two guiding teachers, Donna Farhi and Judith Hanson Lasater. She received her 500-hour certification from Yoga Alliance in 2000, and is currently registered at the organization's highest level, E-RYT-500. Vipassana meditation practice has had the most profound influence on Charlotte's work. She began her practice in 1986, and has attended many 10-and 30-day meditation retreats since then. Her practice has been guided by her spiritual mentors, Pujari and Abhilasha Keays of the Last Resort in Cedar Breaks, Utah, since 1985. In recent years, she has made an annual trip to Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California, to sit an 18-day combined metta (kindness) and insight meditation retreat. Charlotte teaches mindfulness classes online, and at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and Red Butte Garden. All these influences combine to form an evolving style of yoga that acknowledges the alignment principles of the Iyengar system while applying mindful attention to gain insight into the truth of each individual's asana practice rather than striving for preconceived goals. She encourages students to explore and trust their own experience in their asana practice, and enjoys learning new perspectives from her students. In addition to teaching yoga and meditation, Charlotte writes feature stories for several publications, including Catalyst Magazine, Yoga U Online and the Hugger Mugger Yoga blog. Her articles have appeared in Yoga Journal and Yoga International. She has written feature articles for the Telluride Bluegrass Festival's program since the early 1990s, and has participated in research and writing for a book about the festival's history. In 2007 Rodmell Press (now a part of Shambhala Publications) published her first book, Mindful Yoga, Mindful Life: A Guide for Everyday Practice. The book blends the principles of mindfulness with the practice of Patanjali's Eight Limbs of Yoga. Her second book, Yoga for Meditators, was published by Rodmell Press in 2012 and was one of 10 books recommended in Yoga Journal magazine's “Yoga Books of 2012” list. Her most recent book, Hip-Healthy Asana: A Yoga Practitioner's Guide to Protecting the Hips and Avoiding SI Joint Pain, was published in 2018 by Shambhala Publications. Charlotte plays oboe and English horn in the Salt Lake Symphony; the woodwind quintet, Scherzando Winds; the chamber folk ensemble, blue haiku; and with blue haiku, Kate MacLeod and Hal Cannon in the folk sextet, Red Rock Rondo. Red Rock Rondo's 2009 DVD has won two Emmy awards and an award from the National Educational Television Association.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Greensky Bluegrass over Zoom video! Greensky Bluegrass are thrilled to announce their return to Colorado for four unforgettable performances. The band will kick things off with An Evening With Greensky Bluegrass Sept 14 and 15 at the Dillon Amphiteater. Then, the band will head down the mountain to Morrison for two more fun-filled evenings at Red Rocks Sepr 16 and 17. Special guests for Red Rocks TBA. For more information and all up to date news and tour info visit greenskybluegrass.com. Earlier this year, the band released their eighth studio album Stress Dreams via Thirty Tigers. Ahead of the release, Stress Dreams received high praise from critics. Garden & Gun calls the album "one of the most complete and engaging of the group's more than twenty-year career" and Glide says “Stress Dreams perfectly exemplifies, once again, why Greensky Bluegrass is heralded as one of the most important & influential bands of the modern progressive-bluegrass era.” About Greensky Bluegrass:Since their 2000 formation in Kalamazoo, MI, the quartet—Anders Beck [dobro], Michael Arlen Bont [banjo], Dave Bruzza [guitar], Mike Devol [upright bass], and Paul Hoffman [mandolin]—have unassumingly progressed into a phenomenon on their own terms with the undying support of a devout audience. Rolling back and forth across North America on successive tours, they've sold out multiple dates at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Ryman Auditorium, the Fillmore Detroit, Riviera Theater Chicago, and many more. Beyond standout sets at Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and Austin City Limits, they co-own and have headlined 4848 Festival and Strings & Sol. In 2019, "All For Money" marked their second #1 debut on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums Chart and third straight Top 3 entry. They've also earned critical acclaim from Billboard, Parade, NPR, and Rolling Stone who hailed them as “representing the genre for a whole new generation.” For the past century, bluegrass music has traditionally relayed real tales of American life, struggle, tragedy, and triumph. It gives a voice to the quiet, yet colorful stories woven into the fabric of the country itself. Greensky Bluegrass live these stories through their records and performances. When touring ceased in 2020 in the face of the global pandemic, the band hunkered down and compiled demos individually at first, sharing emails and voice notes. In July 2020, they got together for the first time in four months, dedicating rehearsals to the development of the new material. Once circumstances safely permitted, they recorded what would become Stress Dreams during a session in Guilford, VT and two sessions in Asheville, NC with frequent collaborator “and old friend” Dominic John Davis as producer and “wizard engineer” Glenn Brown mixing. They preserved the hallmarks of their sound while widening its expanse. “Greensky is and always has been very unique in our world,” says Paul Hoffman. “We put our love, energy, and focus into what we appreciate about our music. We come together as a band in a way that's organic. We take a lot of pride in how we grow and challenge each other too. We're maturing together. I think we get more Greensky all of the time.”We want to hear from you! Talking more about her businesses, she gives great advice on how to inspire other people to become successful in their areas as well. — Watch the episode here: Listen to the podcast: The Spirit Of A Serial Entrepreneur with Trish Groom We have Trish Groom on the show. She was the Owner of a coffee shop called Sidney’s here in town. She’s the Cofounder of Splick.it (https://www.splickit.com/) . Trish, thanks so much for taking time out of your day. Thanks for having me. Trish is a serial entrepreneur. She’s on more than one business. She’s involved in many different things in the business community. In Splick.it, tell me about your role and who does Splick.it serves? I was Cofounder and in business development. We built an online pre-order, pre-pay app and web for businesses, for restaurants specifically. We target more franchise companies. The sweet spot for us are franchises that have between 500 and 1,200 locations. We white label for them and provide the service. We manage the backend and the customer experience for them. I’m not a restaurant person. Let’s say I’m the franchise owner, what improvement or what change should I expect to see by using Splick.it? A lot of restaurants lose revenue because they lose people at the end of the line. They can’t wait. In the early stages, we were one of the first to come up with this idea where we were taking your pre-order and pre-payment and putting it on an app. That way, you can still as an owner, get that revenue in the door and the customer can still get served quickly like they need to do be. That’s the sticky factor on the long line. For the app, is it an app that the customer has to have or does an employee come from the restaurant with the app? We do the marketing. We help the franchise market the app to a customer. They download it and create an account. We have a credit card on file so it’s easy for them to order and pay. The consumer won’t know that it’s Splick.it because it will be private labeled for the franchises. How long has that company been around? We started in 2009. That was an auspicious time. It was rough, a lot of early-stage friends and family rounds. Serial Entrepreneur: If you’re going to run a race, do everything you can to win.   What folks don’t realize is you didn’t come from a business background. Your first foray in Boulder was you bought a coffee shop. I did buy a coffee shop. What I didn’t realize was that I had never drunk a cup of coffee in my life and I thought that was a good idea. I didn’t realize that was unusual at the time. Do you drink coffee now? I do. I learned a lot. I was traveling in South America for a year and had this idea that I wanted to own a coffee shop. Not because I loved coffee, but because I thought that there was some community aspect to it that was intriguing. I came home from South America and I had no money and no business owning a coffee shop. I had no experience whatsoever. I was teaching at the time, but I ended up in Telluride during the summer at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. My parents probably don’t want to know this part, but I drink a lot of beers and ended up buying a coffee shop from a couple there that I had met and ran into. Two weeks later, the universe conspires sometimes and the next thing I...

Season 3, Episode 57 - Caitlin Canty Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Caitlin Canty. Caitlin Canty is an American singer/songwriter whose music carves a line through folk, blues, and country ballads. Her voice was called “casually devastating” by the San Francisco Chronicle and NPR describes her songs as having a “haunting urgency.” Motel Bouquet, Canty's third record, features ten original songs that hold her darkly radiant voice firmly in the spotlight. Produced by Grammy-nominated Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers) and recorded live over three days in Nashville, the album boasts a band of some of finest musicians in roots music, including fiddler Stuart Duncan and vocalist Aoife O'Donovan. Rolling Stone hails Motel Bouquet as “dreamy and daring” with “poetic lyrics and haunting melodies.” Since the release of her critically-acclaimed Reckless Skyline in 2015, Canty has put thousands of miles on her songs, circling through the U.S. and Europe. She warmed up stages for The Milk Carton Kids and Gregory Alan Isakov and recorded with longtime collaborators Darlingside and with Down Like Silver, her duo with Peter Bradley Adams. She won the Troubadour songwriting competition at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and her song, “Get Up,” was nominated for Song of the Year in the Folk Alliance International Music Awards. Canty's original recordings have recently appeared on CBS's Code Black and on the Netflix original series House of Cards. Raised in small-town Vermont, the daughter of a school teacher and a house painter, Canty earned her degree in biology in the Berkshires and subsequently moved to New York City. She spent her days in the city working as an environmental sustainability consultant and her nights making music at Lower East Side music halls and bars. In 2009, she quit her job and set out to make music full time. In 2015, she packed up her house plants and her 1939 Recording King guitar and drove to Nashville, TN, which she now calls home. Rob and Seth discuss their experiences with Railroad Earth including Rob’s memories of when he saw RRE front man Todd Scheaffer’s band, From Good Homes open for Bob Weir and Ratdog the night after Jerry Garcia died. A brief discussion of this podcast’s fast-approaching live event at City Winery Atlanta September 19th takes us to to Seth and Rob sitting down with Tim Carbone (The Contribution, Railroad Earth) for a thorough examination of what makes him a truly special human and musician. Tim talks about how this summer Railroad Earth was forced to adjust to the temporary-but-still-painful loss of founding member, multi-instrumentalist Andy Goessling - who was "on the disabled list." We learn how they relied on top notch players to step up, sit in and help out - particularly Chris Pandolfi and Matt Slocumb who kept things compelling for RRE loyalists by being part of bringing forth unusual versions of songs in the RRE lexicon - specifically Slocumb on, “Morning Flies." Carbone explains in detail exactly how Psychedelia earned itself an assist with regard to the genesis of his adventurous side project, The Contribution. Tim talks about the band first doing a session in a cabin in Woodacre, California, then working in Laughing Tiger Studios in San Rafeal and eventually recording at Bob Weir’s state-of-the-art TRI Studios in Marin County - elaborating specifically about TRI’s "microphone guru," Rick Vargas. Vargas was vital to the success of their recording and Tim still uses techniques he learned from Vargas during this time. He also relates how he initially became interested in violin, and then how his personal experiences (including a stint playing harmonica in a blues band) and hearing artists like Paul Butterfield and Don “Sugarcane” Harris shaped his approach to playing. Tim tells of his days in The Blue Sparks From Hell, and their string-band bluegrass alter-ego band (each with future Railroad Earth bandmate Andy Goessling). Tim recounts some of the legendary New York shows he saw as an audience member, including his various Fleetwood Mac experiences, detailed accounts of his favorite Traffic shows and his memory of the legendary Grateful Dead SUNY 1970 Halloween show. He also speaks of shaking hands with Muddy Waters, playing in bands with Rick Danko, attending Danko's funeral and meeting future band mates and other significant folks at New York’s legendary music club, The Wetlands. We learn of how Railroad Earth landed the Telluride Bluegrass Festival for their 10th gig, and how the band would unfold from there. He talks about working with various engineers including John Siket of Phish “phame.” Tim conveys what it is like working with RRE’s brilliant Todd Scheaffer, identifying specifically Scheaffer’s feel for melody, knowledge of songwriting and familiarity with literature as reasons for Todd's excellence. He also shares his memory of sitting in with the Allman Brothers’ Band, and then how he, and in turn Railroad Earth evolved from casually collaborating with, to becoming full-on recording partners on Ashes and Dust with jamband icon Warren Haynes. Other icons discussed are Buddy Cage, David Nelson, the timeless David Bromberg and this program's Godfather, Col. Bruce Hampton. We begin our 2nd season of the Creative Strings Podcast live at the 2015 Creative Strings Workshop in Columbus, OH. Christian sits down with 4 of the hottest young Creative String players (dubbed "the Young Guns") and discusses their various practice techniques, exercises and moving between various fiddle styles. Meet the Young Guns Eli Bishop From the age of 3 until 11, Eli studied the Suzuki violin method. After completing the eighth book of the method, he began studying traditional classical music under the instruction of Cornelius Heard at the Blair School of Music, which was part of Vanderbilt University. Under Connie Heard’s instruction, Eli learned to play standard classical violin repertoire. At the age of 16, Eli’s interests shifted from classical to western swing. At this point, Eli began studying with Nashville legend, Buddy Spicher and spent the next year mastering western swing music. While enrolled at the Nashville School of the Arts, Eli studied swing and jazz music on the violin and also began playing the guitar. Now a sophomore in high school, Eli’s grew more and more interested in jazz music, specifically bebop. A close friend at his high school suggested he learn the tunes, “Donna Lee” and “Freedom Jazz Dance”. That was what ignited the desire in Eli to become competent in this style of music. Alex Hargreaves Violinist Alex Hargreaves is an active performer, playing on stages around the world including Austin City Limits, A Prairie Home Companion, Grand Ole Opry, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Panama Jazz Festival, Bonnaroo, Newport Jazz Festival, and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, as well as venues in the UK, France, Italy, Canada, and South Korea. He is a member of world-renowned mandolinist Mike Marshall’s Big Trio, along with bassist Paul Kowert (Punch Brothers) and has toured with the trio extensively following the 2008 release of their self-titled album on Adventure Music. Matt Glaser, artistic director of Berklee College of Music, American Roots Program, states simply, “Truly, Alex Hargreaves is the best young jazz violinist in America.” Mike Barnett I’ve been having a blast travelin’ and performing around the country and internationally with heroes of mine. Having grown up in Nashville, I have a special place in my heart for bluegrass and country music. Fiddle camps- Mark O’Connor String Conference, Christian Howes’ Creative Strings Workshop, Mt. Shasta Fiddle Camp---have provided a tremendous source of inspiration and exposure to incredible players from a wide variety of genres. The great bluegrass fiddler Aubrey Haynie inspired me to record my first CD “Lost Indian” when I was 14. One summer at Crystal Plohman’s ‘International Fiddle Camp’ at Vanderbilt, I had the great honor of working with Bobby Hicks, Buddy Spicher, and Vassar Clemens, three of the finest people and fiddlers there have ever been. They willingly showed me everything I could get my ears on. Greg Byers Since Greg started playing cello at 2 1/2 he has immersed himself in many branches of music, each cumulative aspect elevating the others: performance, composition, recording, education, entrepreneurship. His debut EP Some Dark, Beautiful Morning was orchestrated jazz fusion, but his newer work finds Greg as singer/songwriter; a nuanced interplay of natural and artificial, nature and technology. The language of music is unique in that it can provide every listener with similar yet distinct messages of truth, beauty, freedom; this has motivated Greg to express his own authenticity through precise songwriting and improvisation.
