It was 73 years ago in 1950 that a Black man named Hillard Brooks was shot and killed by a White police officer after he tried to board a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Thomas Gray, who had played football with Brooks as a kid, was outraged by the tragic, unjustifiable shooting. He protested and eventually staged a downtown march to register voters and protest police brutality.Five years later Gray led another protest against the city's segregated buses. On the front lines of the Montgomery bus boycott, Gray withstood threats and bombings alongside his brother, Fred D. Gray, a young lawyer who represented Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Claudette Colvin, a plaintiff in the case that forced Alabama to desegregate its buses.I'm thrilled today that we have with us Thomas Gray's daughter, Karen Gray Houston, an award winning broadcast journalist, who has written a captivating memoir, “Daughter of the Boycott, Carrying on a Montgomery Family's Civil Rights Legacy.” It's an incredible story that recounts how her father's and uncle's actions changed the nation's racial climate and opened doors for her and other African Americans.Karen Gray Houston was born in Montgomery, Alabama, raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She spent 41 years as a news reporter and anchor at radio and television stations and networks in Boston, New York City, and Washington, DC. Since retiring, she wrote Daughter of the Boycott, which was featured in an edition of Oprah's O magazine as "One of 10 Titles to Pick Up Now" and in Smithsonian Magazine's Book of the Week series. Here are some key points we discussed with her:Q. To start with, please tell us why you wrote the book and what's happened since then. I understand that both your uncle and father have been honored and there was some good news for Claudette Colvin, as well.Q. We're in mid-December now. That's a month that's had a lot of significance in this overall story, right?Q. Can you walk us through some of the key components of your book?Q. The role of Claudette Colvin isn ‘t as well-known as Rosa Parks, for example, but this teenage girl was very brave and played a very important role in the battle for racial equality. Tell us about that.Q. In your book you recount the days of the boycott, not only what happened, but how it affected your family. Can you tell us about that?Q. In the chapter about Dr. King's house being bombed, you write that your parents wrapped you in “a protective cocoon,” sheltering you from “unpleasantness associated with the bus boycott.” What was that like for you as a young child?Q. You write about carpools that were created to provide Blacks boycotting the buses with transportation. Your dad was part of that, right? Tell us about that.Q. You weren't the only member of your family on the radio, as your dad had a show called “Songs of the Southland.” Tell us about that and how it may have affected you and your career choice.Q. Tell us about your own broadcast career…You were on WTOP Radio in Washington, DC, to which I was addicted when I worked on Capitol Hill. And you were with United Press International for a time. I worked at UPI early in my career, as well.Q. During your career, did you have to cope with discrimination and anti-Black prejudice? How did that affect you? How did you cope with it?Q. What are your thoughts about racism in the U.S. today and efforts by some on the political right to rewrite history, even to the point of claiming that somehow slavery was a positive experience for some Negroes?Q. As we look towards the coming 2024 presidential election, what are your thoughts about race relations in America, President Biden, Donald Trump and the rest of the Republican presidential wannabes?Q. Your father's initial bus protest was prompted by the unjustified shooting of a black man by a white police officer. We have seen all too many similar shootings occur in recent years prompting calls for police reform, including the controversial call to “defund the police”. What are your thoughts about this?Q. How can people reach out to you and where can they find your book?Q. What's next for you?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Washington, D.C. has a language all its own. Words that mean something here in the nation's capital mean something completely different or nothing at all everywhere else. We're talking about sequestration and reconciliation, fiscal cliffs and super-secret SCIFs. Even SALT, COLA and iced tea - things normally found in your kitchen - have alternate definitions in the federal city. It's the accumulated language of legislating and regulating, the vernacular of those in power. There's also another language native to Washington, D.C., a city with vibrant culture, history and diversity. Ordinary Washingtonians living just blocks from these centers of federal power speak it fluently. So get cised, Moe, and gavel in the season one finale of The Debrief with Major Garrett, featuring Dave Dildine of WTOP Radio, Alexandra Petri of The Washington Post, D.C. What else do they have to do for the other 9 years?). The bill now goes to Governor Roy Cooper for… hopefully… a veto. If he vetoes the bill, it will head back to the General Assembly for an override vote, and hopefully, again, Democrats will hold their ranks to sustain the veto.In this episode, Gary takes you on a little tour of the Legislative Building, and then drops in for the House debate on the Act (with his vast experience of this being his first time ever seeing the House and Senate in action).LINKS:PDF of the bill, as passed: https://www.ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/2019/S359Senate Judiciary Committee debating bill befoe it went to the floor (begins at about 7 minutes from the start of the video): https://www.wral.com/senate-panel-weighs-abortion-rules/18318160/Fact-Check.Org facts on the Born Alive Bill: https://www.factcheck.org/2019/03/the-facts-on-the-born-alive-debate/WITN-TV story on closing Dr. Takey Crist’s clinic: https://www.witn.com/home/headlines/40-Days-of-Life-campaign-kicks-off-in-Jacksonville-368405461.htmlWashington Post story on Dr. Kermit Gosnell: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2013/04/15/the-gosnell-case-heres-what-you-need-to-know/?utm_term=.36c3ef63c249Wikipedia article on Dr. Kermit Gosnell: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kermit_GosnellCurrent statute regarding North Carolina medical practice requirements: www.ncleg.net/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/PDF/BySection/Chapter_90/GS_90-14.pdfCurrent North Carolina statute on death of unborn fetus: https://www.ncleg.net/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/PDF/ByArticle/Chapter_14/Article_6A.pdfVirginia Governor Ralph Northam, full interview on WTOP Radio, January 30, 2019 (start watching at the 38:40 point for full context of the interview) https://wtop.com/local-politics-elections-news/2019/01/va-gov-northam-draws-outrage-from-gop-for-defending-abortion-bill/ This episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/-UCnwlLZWF4Triangle Talk Show web site: https://TriangleTalkShow.com

Jen Chaney joins Tim to talk about a cult classic film that its fans have to watch over and over. Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. Jen is a TV critic and pop culture journalist who’s contributed to the Washington Post, the New York Times, New York Magazine’s Vulture specialty publication, and WTOP Radio in Washington, D.C. In this episode we talk about how a teen movie left an indelible mark on pop culture. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/53_-_Ferris_Beullers_Day_Off_auphonic.mp3   Filmmaker and Director John Hughes made more than his share of movie favorites that spanned generations. All we need to hear are just some of the titles of some of his films, to find ourselves taking a trip back to a certain time in our lives: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Home Alone, Mr. Mom and others. In this episode, we to talk about the lasting impact of one of Hughes’ films, one that many of its fans said they just couldn’t watch one time. Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. The movie debuted in 1986. Matthew Broderick played Ferris, a free-spirited teenager with a quick wit. In Ferris Beuller’s Day Off, he cuts school and goes out on the town in Chicago with two of his girlfriend and his best friend. As with many cult classics this movie contributed some things to culture that have lasted decades.  In fact, Jen Chaney wrote an article in the Washington Post where she documented 25 contributions to pop culture lore. The Plot Ferris is played by Matthew Broderick. He lives in the suburbs of Chicago. He decides to fake being sick so he can cut school for the day. He recruits his best friend Cameron to join him, and Cameron, who is played by Alan Ruck, actually does have a cold that day. And Ferris recruits his girlfriend Sloane, who is played by Mia Sara. There are other memorable characters like Ferris’s little sister played by Jennifer Grey, Jeffrey Jones who plays Principal Ed Rooney, and of course Ben Stein, who plays one of Ferris’s teachers. Charlie Sheen even made a memorable appearance. The movie shows us how cleverly Ferris convinces his mother he’s sick, and then it shows us how he is able to get Cameron and Sloane away from school. The movie starts to build to a point when the three decide to take a joy ride in Cameron’s father’s 1961 Ferrari 250 GT. There were only 100 of those cars ever made. They escape from school and explore Chicago, including a little culture – the museum. The kids make a series of decisions that leave you wondering what’s going to happen next, and sometimes what you fear might happen actually does. Ferris Beuller in Pop Culture It’s not just that certain lines stood out in the movie, but that they came to mean things outside of the movie: When Ben Stein drones Beuller’s name three times in class. When the 1961 Ferrari enters the picture, the soundtrack plays a song from Yello called Oh Yeah. Now shorthand for something you really want in other films, TV and advertising. The movie revived Twist and Shout by the Beatles and Wayne Newton’s 1960s hit Danke Schoen. Rock bands took their names from the movie: Save Ferris, Rooney. Two 1990 TV shows: NBC’s Ferris Beuller (Jennifer Anniston played Ferris’s sister in that;” and Fox’s Parker Lewis Can’t Lose. Things We Didn’t Know Alan Ruck, who played Cameron, was 30 years old at the time. Broderick was 23. In real life Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey (his on screen sister) got engaged before the movie’s release. The couple who played Ferris’s parents actually met on the set and got married. (Cindy Picket and Lyman Ward) Ben Stein was supposed to be off-camera, but the student extras laughed so hard during the filming that John Hughes decided to put Ben Stein in front of the camera for his speech on supply-side economics. Stein selected that topic himself when Hughes told him to talk about something he really knew about.
