Today marks two years since the re-taking of Afghanistan by the Taliban. We speak to Afghanistan's youngest female mayor, Zarifa Ghafari, who was elected mayor of the conservative central city of Maidan Shahr in 2018, aged 23, and survived three assassination attempts while still living in the country. During one of these attempts, her father was killed. Following the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, she fled Afghanistan along with her husband, mother and siblings. But she still receives daily death threats from the Taliban despite fleeing to Germany two years ago. Across social media, everyday activities such as making dinner for yourself, going for a walk or buying yourself flowers have been transformed into acts of feminist empowerment. The hashtag for the trend - ‘Romanticise your life' - has over 1.5 billion views. Should we all be romanticising our lives more? Journalists Ellie Muir and Chanté Joseph look at the pros and cons of the trend. Women with poor mental health have an almost 50% higher risk of having a pre-term birth, that's according to a study of 2 million pregnancies in England. The research found that one in 10 women who had used mental health services before their pregnancy had a pre-term birth, compared with one in 15 who did not. We hear from one of the reports authors, Louise Howard, who is professor emerita in women's mental health at King's College London. Today is VJ day which marks the surrender of Japan and therefore the end of World War Two. Olga Henderson was 13 in 1945, starving in a camp in Singapore alongside other young internees. Now 91, Olga will join us in the studio to talk about her time in the camps recalled in her new – and first - book, In the Shadow of the Rising Sun. Journalist Ellie House is bisexual. But before she had even realised that, it felt like Big Tech had already worked it out, with some sites regularly recommending her LGBTQ content. Ellie joins Nuala to speak about her quest to understand how recommendations systems really work, and the risks and rewards of being queer online. She'll also tell us about speaking to people for whom these kind of recommendations could become potentially life-threatening. A member of the Mbororo pastoralist people in Chad, Hindou is the Founder and President of the Association for Indigenous Women and Peoples of Chad (AFPAT), an organisation she started when she was nine years old. Become a Patreon for access to bonus content and to support the podcast, or buy me a (metaphorical) coffee * In this episode I speak with Tawakkol Karman, a human rights activist, journalist and politician who is known as the “mother of the revolution”, “the iron woman” and “the lady of the Arab Spring,” for her key role in the 2011 pro-democracy uprisings in Yemen, also known as the Arab Spring. She was awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for this work, making her the first Yemeni, the first Arab woman, and the second Muslim woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize, as well as the youngest Nobel Peace Laureate at the time, at the age of 32. Tawakkol is just one of the many women that have been at the forefront of this revolution, peacefully leading the path to freedom and democracy. Yemen is in the middle of one of the worst humanitarian crises of modern times which stems from the counter-revolution to the Arab Spring, waged by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Iran. This story feels a world away from my world - there were multiple times in this conversation I had to remind myself that the stories that Zarifa were sharing are happening now, in this time - not a time before. Zarifa grew up in Afghanistan and when she was three the Taliban banned girls from school and her parents began her education in secret. She went on to become the youngest female Mayor in Afghanistan and the riots, and protests and assassination attempts she endured are mind-baffling stories. Her father was killed by Taliban and this is something that still drives her today. Zarifa shares with me the dreams you had growing up, where her drive and tenacity come from, and why she's driven to ensure women in Afghanistan receive an education. Zarifa's story has recently been released as a Netflix documentary - IN HER HANDS - which I highly recommend watching - especially after hearing her story. After the Taliban returned to power in August of 2021, the question on everyone's mind was ‘What's going to happen to all the women and girls now?' Zarifa has answers. From 2018 until August 2021, Zarifa was mayor of the Maidan Wardak province, located in the heart of Taliban territory. During her tenure, an extremist mob barred her from her office, her male staff walked out in protest, assassins tried to kill her six times, and they even took the life of her father in 2020. Despite all of this, Zarifa ended corruption in the province, promoted peace, and worked to lift women and girls up. In this episode, we discuss what is the reality for women and girls in Afghanistan, her journey to becoming mayor and what keeps her hopeful for the future. In August 2021, the world watched as Kabul fell to the Taliban. Scenes of chaos, anxiety, and fear dominated the media. IN HER HANDS follows the 19 months of lead-up to this through the eyes of Zarifa Ghafari, appointed as the youngest female mayor of Afghanistan at age 26. Her story is interwoven with those of two other key figures: her loyal bodyguard, Massoum; and an antagonist to her ideas, a commander in the Taliban army, Musafer. The varying trajectories of their lives give perspective on the complexities of the 20-year conflict in the region. Afghan filmmaker Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen use their unique access to Zarifa as she navigates multiple layers of political and personal turmoil, including a tense relationship with her father (a leader in the Afghan military) and a dilemma over working with her bodyguard — all against the constant threat of assassination. Instead, they encountered a force of nature: Zarifa Ghafari, the 26-year-old mayor of Maidan Shahr, who was not only one of Afghanistan's first female mayors, but also its youngest. Tamana and Marcel's thought-provoking, insightful and impassioned new Netflix documentary “In Her Hands” is Zarifa's story, but it also opens its lens to track a much broader and more tragic narrative. Over the course of 19 months of filming, the filmmakers witnessed the end of one dream for Afghanistan and the rise of its polar opposite.
