The C919, China's domestically developed narrowbody passenger jet, will begin its first scheduled international commercial service next month, a step industry experts said will test the aircraft's ability to operate beyond domestic markets and help build confidence for wider overseas expansion. The daily round-trip service, operated by Air China, will connect Beijing Capital International Airport and Ulaanbaatar's Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Mongolia from Aug 12, the airline said. According to the schedule, outbound flight CA723 will depart Beijing at 3 pm Beijing time and arrive in Ulaanbaatar at 5:15 pm local time. The return flight, CA724, will leave Ulaanbaatar at 6:30 pm local time and arrive in Beijing at 8:35 pm Beijing time. The route marks the first time the C919, manufactured by Commercial Aircraft Corp of China, will enter a regular international commercial passenger aviation market. Previously, the aircraft has operated mainly on Chinese mainland routes, as well as services connecting the mainland with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. China Eastern Airlines launched the aircraft on scheduled flights between Shanghai and Hong Kong in January 2025, while Air China began regular C919 services between Beijing and Hong Kong in November. Choosing Ulaanbaatar as the first regular international destination is not a move to lower the entry barrier or test the waters," said Zhu Keli, founding director of the China Institute of New Economy. Zhu said the decision reflected a combination of factors including aviation cooperation between China and Mongolia, airworthiness cooperation arrangements, operational safety and route economics. China and Mongolia have maintained stable civil aviation cooperation, with a relatively mature framework for airworthiness cooperation," Zhu said. "The airport environment is relatively straightforward, the flight distance is moderate and the aircraft can complete a round trip within a day, allowing domestic technical support to respond quickly if operational issues arise." The route also has established business and tourism demand, making it suitable for regular commercial operations rather than serving only as a demonstration flight, Zhu said. He said the first international route is aimed at validating the full process of cross-border operations, including overseas maintenance support, international air traffic coordination and customs procedures. Ulaanbaatar is more like a low-risk practical training ground where the C919 can accumulate real overseas operating data and build a replicable model for future international expansion," Zhu said. Guo Jia, a civil aviation expert and professor at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies' South China Business College, said safety considerations were the primary factor behind the selection of the first international destination. He said Air China's previous experience operating the C909 regional jet to Ulaanbaatar, along with the airline's assessment of airport handling and maintenance capabilities, also supported the route choice. For the Chinese aviation industry, the significance of the route extends beyond the flight itself, experts said. Previously, C919 operations were mainly based on China's domestic airspace and supporting infrastructure," Zhu said. "This scheduled international route means the aircraft is entering a regular commercial passenger aviation system between countries." The operation will help establish overseas support capabilities, including maintenance cooperation, spare parts arrangements and international operating procedures, Zhu said. Guo said international expansion would require more than aircraft performance. "Aircraft sales, international operations and market expansion all need to comply with the airworthiness standards of different countries and regions," Guo said, adding that broader international communication and certification efforts would be necessary. Guo added that overseas maintenance, aircraft support and route support capabilities would be among the key challenges for international operations. Looking ahead, experts expect the C919's international expansion to be gradual. "C919's internationalization will not follow an aggressive model of rapidly launching a large number of routes," Zhu said. After validating operations in Ulaanbaatar, the aircraft will likely expand first into short-haul international markets in Central Asia and Southeast Asia, allowing it to accumulate experience under different operating conditions, Zhu said. The priority is to complete the transition from zero to one — making the first international route operate safely and accumulating experience," Guo said. "Only after establishing overseas safety operation and maintenance standards should the C919 move from one route to multiple routes. Airworthiness certification is indeed one of the biggest barriers for the C919 entering mainstream European and US markets," Zhu said. He said certification by authorities such as the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and the US Federal Aviation Administration would be essential, while airlines' familiarity with the aircraft, maintenance networks, leasing systems and market recognition would also influence adoption. narrowbody /ˈnærəʊbɒdi/窄体客机airworthiness /ˈeəwɜːðinəs/适航性certification /ˌsɜːtɪfɪˈkeɪʃn/认证infrastructure /ˈɪnfrəstrʌktʃə(r)/基础设施short-haul /ˌʃɔːt ˈhɔːl/短途的maintenance /ˈmeɪntənəns/维修,维护

China agreeing to purchase 200 aircraft from Boeing is expected to bolster commercial ties between China and the United States, especially in the aviation sector, as industry analysts said the agreement represents a partial easing of strained industrial ties after nearly a decade. The Ministry of Commerce announced on Wednesday that China will purchase 200 Boeing aircraft "in accordance with its air transport development needs and on commercial principles", responding to a question regarding US President Donald Trump's recent remarks on the deal.An official from the ministry said that aviation is a key sector for mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation between the two countries. The US will also guarantee sufficient supplies of engines and spare parts for Chinese operators, according to a statement published on the ministry's website. The comments came days after Boeing said that it had made progress in reopening the Chinese market during Trump's state visit to Beijing, where he was accompanied by a delegation of senior US business executives, including Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg."We had a very successful trip to China and accomplished our major goal of reopening the China market to orders for Boeing aircraft," Boeing said in a statement to China Daily. If finalized, the deal would mark Boeing's first major aircraft commitment from China in nearly a decade. The last major deal came during Trump's previous visit to China in 2017, when Chinese buyers signed agreements for 300 Boeing aircraft worth more than $37 billion.Since then, Boeing has struggled to secure large orders from Chinese airlines amid geopolitical tensions and the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX after two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019.China was once one of Boeing's most important overseas markets, with Chinese airlines accounting for roughly a quarter of the company's global deliveries before 2019. But the US manufacturer's presence has since weakened sharply as European rival Airbus expanded its footprint in China.Airbus now holds roughly 55 percent of China's commercial aircraft market and has secured multiple large orders from Chinese carriers, including hundreds of Airbus A320neo family aircraft."Aviation has traditionally been a key link in China-US economic relations, and aircraft orders often serve as a barometer of bilateral ties," said Zhu Keli, founding director of the China Institute of New Economy. The Boeing commitment signals a shift toward more pragmatic engagement, with both sides returning to cooperation based on commercial interests, Zhu said."It shows that the global aviation supply chain remains deeply interconnected," he said. "High-end manufacturing such as commercial aircraft is difficult to separate from the global division of labor."For China, the move also signals continued openness and commitment to maintaining stable global industrial supply chains, Zhu added, while for the US, it reflects recognition of the importance of the Chinese market.Beyond geopolitics, analysts said the proposed purchase also addresses the pressing operational needs of Chinese airlines.Over the past nine years, Airbus has steadily expanded its dominance in China, leaving airlines increasingly dependent on a single supplier. Reintroducing Boeing aircraft into the market could help rebalance the supply structure and improve resilience, Zhu said.At the same time, Chinese airlines are facing aging fleets and strong demand for capacity growth, while production of the domestically developed C919 by the Commercial Aircraft Corp of China is still ramping up and Airbus order backlogs remain long."In that context, 200 Boeing aircraft could help fill near-term capacity gaps and ensure stable operations on major routes," Zhu said.US commitments to ensure supplies of engines and components could also ease maintenance pressures for airlines and reduce operational risks, he added. However, Zhu cautioned that the deal represents only a partial thaw rather than a full recovery in China-US aviation cooperation. While aircraft purchases and supply chains may expand, barriers remain in areas such as airworthiness certification, core technology sharing and deeper industrial integration. In particular, certification of the C919 by Western regulators remains a key hurdle, highlighting continued technological competition between the two countries, he added.Zhu said that future cooperation is likely to follow a pattern of "strong commercial cooperation but cautious technological engagement", as sensitive technologies such as aircraft engines and advanced avionics remain tightly controlled. Both Boeing and Airbus expect China to become the world's largest aviation market by around 2043, with a commercial fleet of roughly 9,000 to 10,000 aircraft.strained industrial ties /streɪnd ɪnˈdʌstriəl taɪz/紧张的产业关系spare parts /speə pɑːts/零部件grounding /ˈɡraʊndɪŋ/停飞barometer /bəˈrɒmɪtə/晴雨表,指标capacity gap /kəˈpæsəti ɡæp/运力缺口ramp up /ræmp ʌp/提升产能,加速order backlog /ˈɔːdə ˈbæklɒɡ/积压订单partial thaw /ˈpɑːʃəl θɔː/局部解冻airworthiness certification /ˈeəwɜːðinəs ˌsɜːtɪfɪˈkeɪʃən/适航认证avionics /ˌeɪviˈɒnɪks/航空电子系统

Kia ora,Welcome to Friday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news the New Zealand dollar has been re-rated sharply lower overnight, although to be fair only back to levels it was at in April. US benchmark interest rates are rising but the new weaker New Zealand economy is expected to drive the OCR lower than earlier expected. But first in the US, initial jobless claims came in lower than expected at +194,500, a decrease of 10,400 from the prior week when an increase of about that was indicated by seasonal factors. There are now 1.75 mln people on these benefits, +81,000 more than at this time last year.Meanwhile, the Conference Board Leading Economic Index (LEI) retreated in August. A retreat was expected but it came in more than twice the expected decline. That means the LEI fell by -2.8% over the six months between February and August, a faster rate of decline than its -0.9% contraction over the previous six-month period. They noted persistently weak manufacturing new order levels and consumer expectations, and warn of increased headwinds ahead. But it is not weak everywhere. The Philly Fed factory survey for September picked up a modest rise in new orders. But firms in the region remain under sharp price pressure unable to pass on the higher prices they are paying. On the farm, the giant American soybean crop is about ready for harvest, and farmers are glum. The Chinese aren't buying and the Washington isn't coming to the rescue with subsidy support. Prices are back to 2016-2018 levels and the rural concern is palpable. In Financial markets, there was a notable less well-supported US Treasury inflation protected (TIPS) bond tender today that resulted in a median yield of 1.65% plus CPI inflation, compared to 1.93% plus CPI at the prior equivalent event three months ago. There were more central bank rate reviews overnight. Taiwan kept its policy rate unchanged at 2.0%. They have an inflation target of 2.0% and their CPI is currently running at 1.6%. Norway cut theirs by -25 bps to 4.0% in what has been called a "hawkish cut". They have inflation at 3.0% with their target at 2.0%. And the Bank of England held theirs at 4% as expected. They have inflation at inflation at 3.8% when their target is 2%. South Africa held at 7%. Inflation there is 3.3% with a preferred rate of 3.0%.China announced that its Boeing and Airbus-competing C919 aircraft has now received more than 1000 orders, mostly domestic but some international orders as well.Australian labour markets stumbled somewhat in August, falling -5,400 when a small +22,000 rise was expected. And the detail is even less positive because full-time employment fell by -40,900 to 10,077,300 people while part-time employment rose by +35,500 to 4,549,200 people. None of these changes were enough to materially change their 4.2% unemployment rate.Container freight rates fell -6% last week from the prior week with all the weakness coming from outbound rates from China. But bulk freight rates rose +3.4% last week to be +14.6% higher than year ago levels. The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.11%, up +4 bps from yesterday at this time in a steady rise. The price of gold will start today at US$3,643/oz, down -US$15 from yesterday's post Fed dip.American oil prices are down -US$1 at just under US$63.50/bbl, with the international Brent price firmish just under US$67.50/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is at just on 58.8 USc and down -90 bps from yesterday. Against the Aussie we are down -70 bps at 88.9 AUc. Against the euro we are down -50 bps at 49.9 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just under 66, down -50 bps from yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at US$117,553 and up +1.3% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has again been modest at just on +/- 1.2%.You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again on Monday.
Impacts from the trade war with China are landing at Boeing and in U.S. aviation more broadly. Due to high tariffs, Chinese airlines are declining to take deliveries of Boeing aircraft — as many as 50 planes destined for China this year will need to be re-marketed to new buyers. But that's just the beginning of it, as Jon Ostrower explains. China's long-term goal is to be self-sufficient in aerospace, with projects like the C919 and C929. As the geopolitical winds shift, it may look to Embraer as a potential partner rather than Boeing and Airbus. We would like to thank Plusgrade and Rokt for supporting The Air Show.Visit www.theairshowpodcast.com to get in touch with us.

The Joby hydrogen-electric eVTOL 523-mile flight, severe weather and the Southwest Dutch Roll, the danger of getting too close to an operating jet engine, excessive heat impacts on aviation, exploding soda cans that injure flight attendants, and turbulence and hot tea water burns. Aviation News Joby Aviation completes a 523-mile flight in an eVTOL powered by hydrogen-electric tech Joby Aviation, Inc. announced it has successfully flown a liquid hydrogen-electric eVTOL demonstrator 523 miles over California. The aircraft was based on a Joby pre-production prototype battery-electric aircraft fitted with a liquid hydrogen fuel tank and fuel cell system. Joby Aviation photo. The liquid hydrogen fuel tank was designed and built by Joby. It stores up to 40 kilograms of liquid hydrogen which feeds the fuel cell system that produces electricity, water, and heat. The electricity powers six electric motors on the Joby aircraft. Batteries provide additional power primarily during take-off and landing. Joby plans to start commercial operations as soon as 2025 with its battery-electric air taxi. The company has a 6-year backlog of A320 family aircraft and is struggling to get production to the rate they desire. Aircraft owners who need narrowbody aircraft sooner are likely to look at Boeing and COMAC. So Airbus is seeking to focus its activity on an “improvement program,” although it may be years before the C919 is certified by Western regulators. For years, COMAC, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, has worked to establish a viable Chinese commercial airframer. They started with the ARJ21 regional jet and then proceeded to develop the C919 narrowbody in the B737/A320 class. Lately, they've been working on a C929 widebody jetliner. A Southwest jet that did a ‘Dutch roll' was parked outside during a severe storm Investigators looking at the Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Max that experienced a Dutch roll say the plane had been parked outside during thunderstorms with wind gusts of up to 84 mph. After some routine maintenance, the pilots experienced “odd movements of the rudder pedals.” The NTSB hasn't determined when the observed tail damage occurred. The speculation is that the tail damage occurred during the storm when the rudder slammed back and forth in the wind. Safety consultant John Cox, a former airline pilot, said “I do not see this as a Max issue. I do not see this right now as a 737 issue. I see this as a one-off.” Airport Ground Worker Killed After Getting Sucked Into Engine of Boeing 737 When They Stepped Into the ‘Danger Zone' The accident happened in Iran during routine maintenance when the engines were powered for a test run. The worker was trying to retrieve a tool left near the engine. As extreme heat bakes the West, emergency helicopters struggle to fly Medical helicopter flights have been canceled in some areas due to high temperatures. Air temperature and tarmac temperature can be factors. Also, a confined area can require more engine power to land, which is affected by high temperatures. Amid Oppressive Heat, Broiling Airplane Cabins Add to Travelers' Woes Unusually hot weather is causing cabin air conditioning systems to struggle to keep up. The Department of Transportation is studying whether to set minimum standards for cabin temperatures. Southwest Airlines Flight Attendants Are Being Injured By ‘Exploding' Coca-Cola Cans as Summer Heats Soar The Southwest Airlines drink restocking process is different than the one used by other airlines.

Episode Notes One of China's largest airlines, China Southern, is buying 100 domestically-built planes – the C919, produced by the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). The plane is considered an emerging competitor to Airbus' A320 and the Boeing 737. And Airlines Editor Gordon Smith examines if other airlines will look to buy these Chinese-built aircraft. Just last week, Air China signed a similar agreement with COMAC for 100 C919 jets. The bigger question is if international carriers will be tempted to buy. Christian Scherer, the CEO of Airbus' commercial aircraft division, has said the C919 “isn't going to rock the boat.” However, one Boeing executive said the planemaker is factoring in competition from the C919 in its long-term forecast. Next, TUI CEO Sebastian Ebel believes recent protests in the Canary Islands against mass tourism aren't about the industry itself. He says residents are angry about a shortage of housing, writes Travel Experiences Reporter Jesse Chase-Lubitz. Protestors are calling on authorities to limit tourist arrivals to ease pressure on the environment, infrastructure and housing supply. Chase-Lubitz notes many Canary Islands residents argue that mass tourism is pricing them out of their homes. However, Ebel said the unregulated online booking platforms are the reason housing prices have gone up — not tourism as a whole. Ebel blamed individual trips, which include people booking local apartments, for causing more housing to be offered as holiday accommodation. Finally, columnist Colin Nagy argues the ideals of luxury hospitality have been distorted so much that guests are struggling to understand reality: Great properties don't get the attention they deserve, and others serve up superficial goods but fail to deliver. He looks at the problems and suggests ways to fix them. Nagy cites the decline of travel media as one area of concern, noting he believes thoughtful, unbiased commentary on hotels is disappearing. He lists writers and publications worth reading. Nagy also writes that luxury offerings all look the same, and urges readers to support brands carving out unique spaces.
