Single aisle airliner family by Boeing
POPULARITY

He attended the United States Air Force Academy, majoring in General Engineering, and went to Undergraduate Pilot Training at Colombus Air Force Base. Send us a Text Message.Welcome to the new ‘Literary Aviatrix Classics' series, where I discuss books written by and about our aviatrix pioneers with my venerable co-hosts, Dr. Jacque Boyd and Captain Jenny Beatty. In this interview, we get to know Jacque and Jenny, and we announce the subject of our first ‘Classics' discussion. Dr. Jacque Boyd is an educator and a general aviation pilot. She has a B.A. in Education, Psychology, and Special Education. In 1979 she was awarded the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship from the Ninety-Nines for her M.Ed. in Aerospace Education. She also holds a PhD in Curriculum Development and Supervision. Her dissertation was a study of math and science education.Jacque's writing expertise covers several magazine columns, including the Current Issues and Tools for Schools column for Aviation for Women. She also writes extensively for The Ninety-Nines Magazine with the latest contribution being book reviews. She currently does book reviews for several publications and has experienced the fun of ghostwriting.Jacque is a self-admitted book-a-holic with well over 1000 volumes. The majority of the books are aviation-related and most about women's flight. She also has all her grandfather's education books from when he was a teacher in Kentucky in the late 1800s. Captain Jenny Beatty is a longtime airline pilot, author, and advocate for women and others underrepresented in aviation.Jenny's interest in aviation's early days stems from being in one of the few families to have three generations of women pilots. Both of her maternal grandparents learned to fly in 1930, and their daughter, Jenny's mother, earned her pilot's license in 1945. Following them into the air in 1981, Jenny became a flight instructor, airline pilot, check airman, and flight operations manager, and is rated to fly the B737, B747, B777, B787, DC-9, seaplanes, and gliders. In this portrait, Jenny is wearing her grandmother's flying jacket. To join the Literary Aviatrix Classics conversation, Jenny draws from her collection of over 350 books and magazines by and about women and other underrepresented pilots all over the world, including rare early first editions. She is a popular writer and public speaker on historical and contemporary pilot career topics. A unique aspect of flying in the airlines is that each company has its own specific fleet of aircraft. And within that fleet, pilots will only fly one at a time. This requires a specific type rating to operate that aircraft, and my friend Kelan shares his experience of recently completing his type rating for the Boeing 737!

Welcome to your weekly Airplane News update, we have three stories for you, the NTSB issued a statement challenging the findings of the Ethiopian B737 Max crash, SWA cancels more than 2400 flights, the FAA is proposing $134K in fines for an Puerto Rican airline, and the FAA has invalidated 140 checkrides in Alaska.
It was a cold and snowy day in Washington, DC as passengers boarded the narrow-body Air Florida 737. The plane was sprayed with de-icing fluid while waiting at the gate, but a series of errors before the plane reached the runway, and more errors on the runway, sealed the fate of this flight. Just moments after take-off, the plane fell from the sky and crash-landed on the 14th Street Bridge and then plunged into the icy Potomac River. Only five passengers and one crew member survived the crash, while four motorists were killed on the bridge. Following the crash, heroes emerged with names still recognized today. What went wrong with Flight 90? Was it a mechanical failure? Could the weather be blamed? What role did the flight crew play in this disaster? And was the nearby train derailment, where three people died, related to the plane crash? This episode of Radar Contact Lost has the answers. Note: None of the sound effects in this episode are from the actual Air Florida crash.
Recorded on 21NOV2022 Welcome on board Flight 122 of the Squawk Ident Podcast - The Golden Age of Aviation Bonuses On today's flight we are joined by an aviator who's parents exposed him to aviation at the tender age of 5 years old, when he was able to witnesses the awesome display of air power by the U.S. Navy Blue Angles F4 Phantom team. In his teen years he joined the Civil Air Patrol, took high school classes on aviation where he grew his addiction of aviation in the process. As flight training costs started to skyrocket, his aviation passion was set aside in order to pay the bills within the emerging computer technology market. He later started his own computer software company that took off. Despite his financial success in Tech, his addiction to aviation never subsided. Fast forward to today, his winding journey has lead him to the present day where he flies an Embraer 175 for Sandpiper Airlines (an alias to his employer, an American Flag yielding wholly owned regional airline). We are honored to have as our featured guest today Mr. Mike Airhart. We will also discuss $100,000 signing bonuses, Botched Drug Tests, B737's vs Grey Geese, and where in the world is Captain Keith. So stick with us as we cover all this and more on this, the 122nd episode of the Squawk Ident podcast. Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
On May 3, 2019, Miami Air Flight 293, a Boeing 737 that took off from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, attempted to land at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. The jet overshot the runway and eventually settled in a shallow part of the St. Johns River. There were seven crew members and 136 passengers on board the plane at the time of the crash. Of that, 21 people received minor injuries and three pets were trapped inside the plane's cargo hold. On Wednesday, the National Transportation Safety Board released its full report on the crash. The report cites weather as a big factor but cited other factors as well. In the moments before the flight was set to land at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, the flight suddenly changed its path due to the inclement weather, according to the NTBS report. However, the change led the flight through the center of the storm cell. At the time of the crash, there was heavy rain, thunderstorms and wind at about 8 knots, or around 9 mph. Wind gusts reached as high as 16 knots, or about 18 mph, according to the report. These factors also caused low visibility of about three miles. Captain Gabriel Cosentino, 55, was at the controls and had worked for Miami Air since March 2008, the report says. He had 7,500 hours of flying time prior to the crash. In an interview with investigators, he said he had flown into NAS Jax between five to ten times. Cosentino also told investigators, "There was no concern about the weather, as the flight route took them west of it," the report says. He added he, "...did not remember the weather report received from the approach control," and called the landing, "pretty smooth," according to the report. Cosentino has not been involved in any other accidents or incidents with Miami Air and was never disciplined for his prior job performance, according to the report. First Officer Claudio Marcelo Jose La Franca, 47, and was fairly new to the company. He was hired in October 2018 and began training in January 2019, according to the report. He also had about 7,500 hours of flight experience prior to the crash. In his interview, he told investigators, "...that there were thunderstorms developing," and he, "...recalled last seeing the airspeed at 100 knots and they were getting close to the end of the runway and not slowing," the report says. It was his first flight to NAS Jax. The report also reveals one of the two evacuation door slides failed to inflate as did one 46-person life raft. There were four life rafts on board. The investigation finds the life raft's inflation hoses were not connected and states a review of the maintenance procedures where the parts were last tested is needed for a risk assessment.

Join NAFI: www.nafinet.org Watch the full video and claim FAA Wings Credits: https://www.mentorlive.site/program/18.html We've all heard the term gamification, but what does that really mean? The science of game design is about leveraging challenge to drive engagement, satisfaction and motivation. Interestingly, game design techniques map incredibly well to flight training. By understanding game mechanics, the building blocks of games, you'll add to your toolbox a valuable set of techniques to keep your students engaged and on track to certification. New training products are coming online which leverage game design and technologies that may enable a new paradigm in flight training. One in which pilots can reach certification at lower costs, while being better prepared to safely utilize the privileges their certificate provides. Join game designer, pilot and founder of TakeFlight Interactive Brandon Seltz, and gold-seal CFI Mark Thompson on a journey to discover these new tools and techniques to give your students the best training experience and outcome. Former Director of Scenario Development for Redbird Flight Simulations and game-designer on Microsoft Flight Simulator, Brandon and his team are working toward a vision of how game-based learning can revolutionize pilot development. This vision is influenced by Greg Brown's 1999 article “Tomorrow's Lesson” and his foresight of the “smart simulator”. A long-time private and glider pilot, Brandon is proof in the power of simulation in training. Mark is a gold-seal flight instructor who holds an ATP and is type rated B737 and A320. He attended the University of North Dakota (UND) where he started instructing in 2003. His experience at UND's highly regarded structured program provided valuable insights into pilot development. After UND Mark worked to implement RNP AR instrument approaches for airlines all over the world. After nine years away, he chose to get back into flight instruction at a fast growing and forward thinking part 61/141 flight school. There he met Brandon, the TakeFlight Interactive team, and their vision for the future of flight training. Mark jumped at the opportunity to influence the future of pilot development through the power of game-based instructional design and broad access to TakeFlight's virtual flight instructor.
Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
3 March 1991, UA585, a 737-200Adv crashed on approach to Colorado Springs. The aircraft departed from controlled flight approximately 1,000 feet above the ground and struck an open field. After a 21-month investigation, the Board issued a report on the crash in December 1992. In that report, the NTSB said it “could not identify conclusive evidence to explain the loss of the aircraft”, but indicated that the two most likely explanations were a malfunction of the airplane's directional control system or an encounter with an unusually severe atmospheric disturbance. 8 Sep 1994, US427, a 737-300 was approaching Pittsburgh Runway 28R when ATC reported traffic in the area, which was confirmed in sight by the First Officer. At that moment the aircraft was levelling of at 6000ft (speed 190kts) and rolling out of a 15deg left turn (roll rate 2deg/sec) with flaps at 1, the gear still retracted and autopilot and auto-throttle systems engaged. The aircraft then suddenly entered the wake vortex of a Delta Airlines Boeing 727 that preceded it by approx. 69 seconds (4,2mls). Over the next 3 seconds the aircraft rolled left to approx. 18deg of bank. The autopilot attempted to initiate a roll back to the right as the aircraft went in and out of a wake vortex core, resulting in two loud "thumps". The First Officer then manually overrode the autopilot without disengaging it by putting in a large right-wheel command at a rate of 150deg/sec. The airplane started rolling back to the right at an acceleration that peaked 36deg/sec, but the aircraft never reached a wings level attitude. At 19.03:01 the aircraft's heading slewed suddenly and dramatically to the left (full left rudder deflection). Within a second of the yaw onset the roll attitude suddenly began to increase to the left, reaching 30deg. The aircraft pitched down, continuing to roll through 55deg left bank. At 19.03:07 the pitch attitude approached -20deg, the left bank increased to 70deg and the descent rate reached 3600f/min. At this point, the aircraft stalled. Left roll and yaw continued, and the aircraft rolled through inverted flight as the nose reached 90deg down, approx. 3600ft above the ground. The 737 continued to roll, but the nose began to rise. At 2000ft above the ground the aircraft's attitude passed 40deg nose low and 15deg left bank. The left roll hesitated briefly, but continued and the nose again dropped. The plane descended fast and impacted the ground nose first at 261kts in an 80deg nose down, 60deg left bank attitude and with significant sideslip. All 132 on board were killed. More information From 737 Systems Website: The main rudder PCU contains a Force Fight Monitor (FFM) that detects opposing pressure (force fight) between A and B actuators. This may occur if either system A or B input is jammed or disconnected. The FFM output is used to automatically turn on the Standby Hydraulic pump, open the standby rudder shutoff valve to pressurize the standby rudder PCU, and illuminate the STBY RUD ON, Master Caution, and Flight Control (FLT CONT) lights. The standby rudder PCU is powered by the standby hydraulic system. The standby hydraulic system is provided as a backup if system A and/or B pressure is lost. With the standby PCU powered the pilot retains adequate rudder control capability. It can be operated manually through the FLT CONTROL switches or automatically. (Refer to Chapter 13, Hydraulics, Standby Hydraulic System) An amber STBY RUD ON light illuminates when the standby rudder hydraulic system is pressurized. The standby rudder system can be pressurized with either Flight Control switch, automatically during takeoff or landing (Refer to Chapter 13, Hydraulics, Standby Hydraulic System) or automatically by the Force Fight Monitor. The STBY RUD ON light illumination activates Master Caution and Flight Control warning lights on the Systems Annunciation Panel.

Engine failure after take off is a manoeuvre that is well versed and trained specifically for all airline pilots, twice per year. This however, was no ordinary engine failure after take off. When the engine severed from the aircraft, there was a significant change in the flight characteristics, unusual to a conventional engine failure. The ruptured fuel and hydraulic lines caused a multiple, complex failures. Hydraulic failure on its own is a major emergency and requires dramatically increased workload from the flight deck, to bring the stricken aircraft back home.Compounding an engine failure, a fuel leak, hydraulic failure, control issues and bad weather is a recipe for disaster. Trevor Arnold and Dan Perry dug deep and brought the B737 back to land in a miserable foggy, rainy Cape Town.Watch this interview on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VnifXXiREUGet in touch with Alex to improve the performance of your team: alex@alexmacphail.co.zahttps://twitter.com/AlexMacPhail1https://www.linkedin.com/in/flyingmogulwww.alexmacphail.co.za
