This is Nelson John, and I'll bring you the top business and tech stories, let's get started. US-China Tariff War Escalates The US-China trade tensions hit a boiling point as the White House confirmed a 104% tariff on Chinese imports, effective April 9. While President Trump says he's “waiting for China's call,” Beijing isn't backing down, calling the move “blackmail.” Global markets, oddly, bounced back slightly on hopes of negotiations—but signs of a resolution remain slim. Apple's Satcom Partner Eyes India Globalstar, the satellite partner behind Apple's emergency SOS feature, has applied to enter India's growing satellite market. With just 31 satellites compared to Starlink's 7,000+, Globalstar is eyeing a niche play. But competition is heating up, with players like Jio, OneWeb, and Amazon Kuiper racing for spectrum. India's satcom sector could grow nearly 10x by 2028. BoAt Sets Sail for IPO—Again India's popular wearables brand BoAt is gearing up for a ₹2,000 crore IPO. After shelving its 2022 plans, the company has confidentially filed papers under SEBI's revised norms. The issue includes a ₹900 crore fresh issue and ₹1,100 crore offer-for-sale. Proceeds will fund R&D, product upgrades, and debt reduction—potentially making this one of the year's most anticipated listings. India's Big Shipbuilding Ambition India is charting a new course in shipbuilding, teaming up with South Korea's Hyundai and Japan's Mitsui. Cochin Shipyard is close to sealing a deal for a new Kochi facility, with land provided by the government. The goal? Boost India's share in the $100 billion global shipbuilding market from less than 1% to a top-5 position by 2047, backed by a ₹25,000 crore Maritime Development Fund. Apollo Hospitals Bets Big on NCD Care Apollo Hospitals is investing ₹6,000 crore to expand its urban footprint and fight India's rising tide of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The two-phase plan will add 3,500 beds across cities like Pune, Mumbai, and Chennai. Apollo's “Health of the Nation” report reveals 27% of 2.5 million screened individuals had multiple NCD risk factors. The healthcare giant is pushing for nationwide screening and preventive school health programs.

OneWeb is one of the most compelling stories of the New Space era. From its start as one of the first constellation ventures, and early success, to its fall in bankruptcy and rebirth under new ownership, the company has captured the space industry's attention for years.  Caleb Henry is working to catalog that story, writing a book about OneWeb. Henry is a very familiar face to Via Satellite readers — he is a former reporter for both Via Satellite and Space News, and he is now Director of Research for Quilty Space.   Henry joins On Orbit this week to talk about his OneWeb book project. He spent the last year conducting interviews and recently secured an agent. He shares an inside look at his process — from conducting more than 250 interviews to how he's adapting his journalistic writing style to the long-form nature of writing a book. And, Henry shares why thinks it's so important to tell the story of OneWeb.

Maybe you've looked at the sky on a clear night and spotted the International Space Station, a tiny white dot gliding through the stars. Maybe it felt special, a rare glimpse of a human-made satellite in space. But what if you were to look up at the sky and see more visible satellites than stars? What if the Big Dipper and Orion were drowned out by  a satellite traffic jam, criss-crossing through space? A growing number of astronomers are sounding the alarm about such a possibility, even within the next decade. A new space race is already well underway. Commercial satellite traffic in low Earth orbit has skyrocketed in recent years, with more satellites launched into space than ever before. The majority of these satellites are owned and operated by a single company: Starlink. Featuring Samantha Lawler, Jonathan McDowell, Aaron Boley, and Roohi Dalal, with thanks to Edward Oughton.  SUPPORTOutside/In is made possible with listener support. Last month, a decommissioned Russian satellite disintegrated in low Earth orbit, posing potential risks to astronauts on board the ISS. In 2019, an important weather-monitoring satellite had to dodge a Starlink satellite, a fuel-expensive maneuver. In 2021, Starlink and OneWeb debated what really happened when their satellites passed within 190 feet of each other in orbit. A note on space regulationOur episode did not cover all the groups regulating space. At a global level, this includes the UN's International Telecommunication Union and the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs. Radio astronomy, a field that relies on detecting electromagnetic waves from celestial bodies, is particularly vulnerable to interference from these satellites. These celestial objects emit a range of electromagnetic radiation, which astronomers observe using sensitive equipment tuned to specific frequency ranges. However, the radiation from Starlink satellites, albeit equivalent to that from a television set, becomes problematic due to the sheer number of satellites emitting it simultaneously. This concern is echoed by Federico Di Vruno, spectrum manager at the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) and author of the study. He highlights the potential for significant interference with radio astronomy, given the planned scale of Starlink and other satellite constellations like OneWeb. The cumulative effect of these satellites' emissions could severely impact the quality of astronomical data, making large portions of it unusable for scientific research.

From the first faint signals from Sputnik in 1957 to an estimated half a million satellites orbiting the earth in 2030 - yeah, we were shocked too! The effects on earth based astronomy could be devastating. And then there are all the things that can go wrong, like collisions and the build up of aluminum and other particles in the high atmosphere from burned-up satellites. On the bright side, there is growing cooperation from satellite companies, in mitigating the reflective properties of satellites. Dr Tregloan-Reed completed his Ph.D. in astronomy at the University of Keele, Staffordshire, UK and then went on to a two year postdoctoral research fellowship at NASA Ames Research center, California USA. In 2018, Dr Tregloan-Reed relocated to Northern Chile and his primary research is in exoplanets, specializing in exoplanets which orbit active host stars, to better understand how stellar activity can impact our ability to detect and characterize exoplanetary systems. Since the start of 2020 and after the launch of Darksat, SpaceX's first attempt to dim their satellites, Dr Tregloan-Reed has been leading an international network of telescopes in performing brightness measurements of satellite constellations such as Starlink, OneWeb, and Amazon Kuiper. This survey is collecting data to allow astronomers to develop mitigation software and to ascertain the impact of satellite constellations to the quality of the night sky and Astronomy.

#218The 2023 Nobel Prize winners have been announced. Winners of the science prizes include two scientists who helped develop mRNA vaccines, physicists who've managed to generate ultra-short pulses of light to study electrons and chemists who've made unimaginably tiny crystals, called quantum dots. Why all these discoveries have touched our lives – and how one almost didn't happen. We've got some science-based puzzles that'll have you scratching your head… Rob Eastaway, the man behind New Scientist's Headscratcher puzzle column, has helped author a new book of brain teasers, aptly named ‘Headscratchers'. To celebrate its launch, Rob shares a tricky clock-based puzzle to try your hand at – plus a chance to win a free copy of the book. From SpaceX to Amazon to OneWeb, the race is on to launch thousands of satellites into space, capable of providing internet access to almost anywhere in the world. But at what cost to the environment? The first study comparing the carbon footprint of these satellites is out now.Plus: How electrons from Earth may be influencing the creation of water on the moon, why chicken hatcheries in Europe are starting to sex-test unhatched chicks and why hippopotamuses are so bad at chewing their food. And a plug for our favourite feast of the year: Fat Bear Week. Hosts Timothy Revell and Christie Taylor discuss all of this with guests Clare Wilson, Alex Wilkins, Rob Eastaway, Jeremy Hsu and Corryn Wetzel. There are no international laws against littering in space, which is a shame, because individual governments love to blow things up in low-Earth orbit. The result? A crisis of ricocheting debris that goes on forever. As private industry sends an unprecedented number of satellites into orbit, security experts find themselves in a race against the clock to bring sanity (or sanitation?) to the space around us. This episode features former NASA astrophysicist Donald Kessler, Professor Mariel Borowitz of Georgia Tech, and Victoria Samson and Brian Weeden of the Secure World Foundation.
