It's time this week to geek out over airlines: We're going to talk about the major U.S. carriers and what they've been doing right, and where they may be facing headwinds. But, rebuilding airline supply and passenger demand after the pandemic is accompanied by various operational challenges. South East Asia is playing catch-up due to the long pandemic travel restrictions, so what is the current state of play for airlines, airports and aviation? He has 13 years’ experience in vertical search engines both in Business Development and General Management roles. He’s been with Octopart in New York for eight years, of which he’s served as GM for the last three years. Octopart was started in 2007 by three Physicists in Grad School. Due to problems with manually finding electronic parts in thick catalogs; the idea of a search engine was born. All three dropped out of school and thanks to Y Combinator program, Octopart got off the ground. Today there are between 800 and 900,000 users on the site monthly.Octopart works with over 200 distributors who make it possible for the user to access the database for free. The database gives access not only to the parts but also availability, validating, finding CAD models, symbols, footprints, 3D and exploration of technical details of each component. Part shortages is currently a huge problem especially with ceramic capacitors and LCCs. Octopart has a similar parts feature on the part detail page. The search criteria are very smart which is very helpful for everyday decisions. Availability and approved vendors lists as well as backup distributors are also available. Feedback is very positive regarding signals of risk and particularly lifecycle status.End of life is a huge problem in applications such as aerospace and even on the repair side. Octopart offers authorized channels or sources where the manufacturer has formal relationships with distributors. Octopart will have the authorized components come up first in your search. Compliance documentation and government regulations: there are restrictions on hazardous substances or chemicals - all part of the ‘problem set’ of selecting parts which Octopart strives to address. Vision and strategy for Octopart: First aim is a user-friendly solution. Second aim is for Octopart to be the go-to source for any relevant data on electronic components. Another aspiration is transparent structured data (information on where parts come from, last update, etc.) is essential for the future of electronic design and manufacturing. Tinctures are liquid extracts made from herbs that you take orally (by mouth). They are usually extracted in alcohol (known here on our website as "regular"), but they can also be extracted in vegetable glycerine or apple cider vinegar (non-alcohol). Tinctures are easy and convenient to use. Tinctures are also easier to give to children as they have to take only small amounts (see Children's Dosage Guide for suggestions). Because they are taken directly under the tongue, they enter the bloodstream much more quickly and directly than by any other means. This means that the action in the body is usually quicker. Although some herbs will have an immediate effect, such as those used to help one relax, others that are more nutritive and building in nature may take several weeks of continual use before best results are seen (much like a multi-vitamin).In the 19th century, the Irish surgeon O’Shaughnessy reintroduced the use of cannabis from India into Western medicine. Cannabis sativa L. (Cannabaceae)—largely in the form of ethanolic tinctures—was then part of main Western pharmacopoeias until the 1930s, when it was removed gradually with increasing recreational use and its legal prosecution In the second half of the 19th century, over 100 scientific articles were published in Europe and the United States about the therapeutic value of cannabis.13 The climax of the medical use of cannabis by Western medicine occurred in the late 19th and early 20th century. Various laboratories marketed cannabis extracts or tinctures, such as Merck (Germany), Burroughs-Wellcome (England), Bristol-Meyers Squibb (United States), Parke-Davis (United States), and Eli Lilly (United States).As non-alcohol tinctures have no alcohol content to them to act as a preservative, they can easily become contaminated and are at risk for growing mold. Alcohol, pregnancy and drug interactions: One dose of an alcohol-based tincture has approximately the same alcohol content as eating a very ripe bananaSativex is licensed in about 30 countries, an insane about of gold standard clinical research is published about this product, which is essentially a tincture with a spray nozzle. Not sure about Children Services here is some info.The agency's current mission statement was written in 1999 by a consortium of more than 100 community child welfare stakeholders and Lucas County Children Services (LCCS) staff. The group felt strongly that LCCS should take a leadership role in protecting abused and neglected children. In assuming this responsibility, we also try our best to preserve families. Children belong in families, hopefully the one they are born into. We prefer that a child remain at home while we provide services to stabilize the family. If a child cannot live safely at home, we first look for an appropriate relative to care for the child for as long as necessary. If a relative is not available, the child will go into foster care or other placement. In every case, the safety of the child is our main concern. We also believe in permanence for children. Children need stability, and they need permanence. If the crisis in a birth family cannot be resolved, it is our responsibility to seek an alternative, permanent family for those children in a timely manner. Lucas County Children Services gets its mandate from state of Ohio law. According to the Ohio Revised Code, public children services agencies shall do all of the following:- Investigate allegations of child abuse, neglect or dependency- Make reasonable efforts to prevent the removal of children from their homes- Accept custody of children from courts with juvenile jurisdiction- Provide temporary emergency shelter when necessary- Find family foster homes for children- Implement a system for assessing risk to children- Administer federal adoption assistance funds

Alrosa Airlines (Russia) took delivery of one B737-700, serial 37088, leased from BOC Aviation · Aeromexico Connect took delivery of one E190, serial 19000251, leased from GECAS (US). · General Electric A380 engine venture with Pratt & Whitney may be poised to muscle back in on the double-decker jet following Airbus deal to sell 36 A380s to Emirates (UAE). · Aeronautical Engineers (US) delivered the 100th B737-400SF freighter conversion to ASL Aviation (Ireland). ASL currently has an additional four AEI B737-400SF freighters either currently undergoing conversion or scheduled for modification in 2018. · Air Lease Corporation (US) Executive Chairman warned of possible delays to deliveries of B737 MAX if LEAP-1B engines issues worsen. · Thai Airways International urged by the government to procure smaller aircraft to decrease operation and maintenance costs, in a bid to lower its debt and keep up with emerging LCCs. · Etihad (UAE) pulled its entire A330F fleet from service and placed the aircraft in storage, reportedly as part of its company-wide restructuring plan. · AerCap reports 4Q 2017 transactions, as follows: signed lease agreements for 46 aircraft; purchased 25 aircraft; executed sale transactions for 29 aircraft; signed financing transactions for US$1.7 billion; and exercised options with Airbus to purchase 50 A320neo Family aircraft, with deliveries starting from 2022. · ATR booked firm orders for 113 aircraft in 2017, along with 40 options. ATR delivered 80 aircraft, reached a book-to-bill ratio of 1.45, and secured a solid backlog representing three years of production. ATR also stabilized its annual turnover at US$ 1.8 billon. · Embraer announced the E190-E2 proved in flight tests to be 1.3% better than originally expected, which represents a 17.3% improvement when compared to the current generation E190, and nearly 10% better than its direct competitor. · Triumph Group (US) signed an agreement with Boeing to provide major structural assemblies for the B767 program, including the production of horizontal stabilizers, doors, aft fuselage and center wing sections. · Hawaiian Airlines (US) and Japan Airlines jointly applied for blanket statements of authorization from the US regulators to engage in codeshare operations for an indefinite period, effective 25 March 2018. · NIKI (Austria) founder Niki Lauda won the bidding for the airline he founded, convincing the insolvent carrier’s administrators in marathon talks and undoing an agreed deal with IAG (UK). · TrueAero (US) appointed Ian Nicholson as VP – Technical Operations, effective January 2nd, 2018. · Royal Air Maroc (Morocco) is making final adjustments to its new strategy, which includes doubling of the fleet and more long-haul services out of Casablanca. Carrier has four B787s arriving between December 2018 and March 2019, with four B737 MAX arriving between 2018 and June 2019. · Avolon (Ireland) is sheltered from problems facing parent HNA Group (China), but its credit profile would benefit from a guarantee that it would not be forced to bail out the group, ratings analysts said.

We start off by wishing Vinay a Happy Birthday, but certainly, a "mediocre birthday" (his words) pales in comparison to the continued woes for AirBerlin and Alitalia (1:10) after we perform a health check on Europe's biggest ailing carriers (for now). And the drama doesn't end there: Ryanair, which once appeared to be one of the highest bidders for some of Alitalia's assets, is suffering from extensive operational and commercial fallouts over a pilot shortage (16:35). With no end in sight, will they be able to recover from a tarnished image in spite of its, "Always Getting Better," program oriented around customer service? However, not all is woeful in Europe: Turkish Airlines seems to have recovered from a crummy 2016 and placed a blockbuster order for 787-9s (30:18) and may have more orders in the pipeline from both Boeing and Airbus. Furthermore, Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic JV partner Delta will be adding new routes and cities to Europe in Summer 2018 (36:30), diversifying beyond traditional bread-and-butter markets and going places where long-haul LCCs are absent. 

Vinay and Rohan kick off this week's episode by discussing the electronics ban on flights from certain Middle Eastern countries to the US and UK (2:40). Does this mean that Vinay won't be able to take selfies on his iPad on certain airlines despite getting Global Entry? While on the subject of UK-based carriers, the two discuss the business case for IAG's new Barcelona-based long-haul, low-cost carrier, "LEVEL," (23:32) and what impact will it have alongside the other North Atlantic, "disruptor" LCCs taking the skies by storm in summer 2017? Meanwhile, across the ocean, IAG's JV partner American Airlines had some words for Wall Street Analysts, spearheaded by CEO Doug Parker admonishing that investors are taking "too narrow" of a view on airline RASM performance (36:15). Finally, a star has fallen - somewhat - with Cathay Pacific in the red (45:30). How can Thai be profitable while Cathay is not?

Europe certainly has its share of struggling airlines, but Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air are not among them. And for Ryanair and Wizz, fourth quarter earnings simply topped off a triumphant 2016. (easyJet has yet to report on its fourth quarter.) In the U.S., Spirit’s fourth quarter numbers were great—just not great for Spirit, as the hunter has become the hunted. Meanwhile all those LCCs and ULCCs were bested in 2016 by Alaska Airlines, a carrier that’s never been happier to call Seattle home. And in Asia, South Korea’s two biggest carriers—Korean Air and Asiana—are persevering despite a slowing home economy and competition from Japanese and Chinese carriers.

Ron explains why the e-commerce environment is so challenging for legacy airlines - they cannot show their advantages to customers because the booking systems do not allow them to demonstrate their better value proposition. This is a novel way to looking a how legacies are being beaten by LCCs. If a legacy carrier costs only 10% more but gives you meals, space and real ambiance, why not fly it? The problem is that in the current booking systems you only see the 10% price difference - you never know about the other side of the deal - unless you're an industry insider.
