Messico in recessione. «A loser».

IndiGo Soars to New Highs but Faces Valuation Concerns IndiGo's stock hit a 52-week high of ₹5,190, fueled by strong management commentary and rising air travel demand from the Mahakumbh gathering and an extended wedding season. Passenger traffic surged 17% YoY, lifting revenue per seat. Since January, the stock has gained 25%, delivering a 58% annual return—far outpacing the Nifty 50. However, its valuation of 9.5x earnings exceeds global airline peers like Air China (8.8x) and the industry average (5.5x). IndiGo plans to expand international capacity from 28% to 40% by 2030, adding one aircraft per week and cutting grounded planes. Despite strong fundamentals, analysts warn the upside is limited, with Motilal Oswal and Nuvama setting target prices below its current ₹5,097 level. Eli Lilly Brings Mounjaro to India Eli Lilly has launched Mounjaro, its diabetes and weight-loss drug, in India after securing regulatory approval. With over 101 million diabetes cases and rising obesity, India is a key market for the pharma giant. Already sold in the UK and Europe under the same name and as Zepbound in the U.S., Mounjaro is expected to tap into a global obesity drug market projected to reach $150 billion annually by the 2030s. CEO David Ricks had hinted at a 2025 India launch, and now it's a reality. Accenture's Warning Spells Trouble for IT Sector Accenture flagged macroeconomic uncertainty in the U.S., citing weaker earnings and federal contract delays under the Trump administration. The IT giant's Q2 revenue fell 5.8% sequentially to $16.66 billion but grew 5.4% YoY. Its Q3 revenue outlook remains between $16.9 billion and $17.5 billion, with full-year growth guidance capped at 7%. For Indian IT majors like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro, this signals headwinds, as analysts predict slower growth for India's $283-billion IT sector in FY26 due to high interest rates and geopolitical risks. However, AI offers a bright spot—Accenture secured $1.4 billion in Gen AI bookings last quarter, with total AI-related orders hitting $5.6 billion since September 2023. The Corporate Rebranding Wave: More Than Just a Name Change? Following Zomato's shift to Eternal, CK Birla Group's HIL Ltd has rebranded as BirlaNu Ltd, while Hindalco has also refreshed its identity. Experts say rebranding reflects strategic shifts, next-gen leadership, and market differentiation. Over 1,100 Indian companies have changed names in the past two decades, with BFSI, real estate, and IT leading the trend. A third of newly listed companies rebrand within five years of their IPO, highlighting competitive pressures. But does it impact stock prices? Not necessarily—PwC's Raghav Narsalay notes that unless tied to a major business shift, investor reactions remain muted. India Approves ₹54,000 Crore Defence Boost India has cleared a massive military upgrade, approving key acquisitions for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Highlights include: • Air Force: Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft to enhance aerial surveillance. • Army: Upgraded 1,350-HP engines for T-90 tanks, improving mobility in high-altitude regions. • Navy: Indigenously developed Varunastra torpedoes for anti-submarine warfare. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, also announced measures to speed up procurement as part of the government's “Year of Reforms” initiative. These moves reinforce India's focus on military modernization and operational readiness.

Asia correspondent Per Elinder Liljas speaks to Lisa Owen about Elon Musk snubbing India but still visiting China, Air China's massive order of planes from a state-owned manufacturer and Japanese authorities blocking a picturesque view of Mount Fuji because of unruly tourists.
Episode Notes One of China's largest airlines, China Southern, is buying 100 domestically-built planes – the C919, produced by the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). The plane is considered an emerging competitor to Airbus' A320 and the Boeing 737. And Airlines Editor Gordon Smith examines if other airlines will look to buy these Chinese-built aircraft. Just last week, Air China signed a similar agreement with COMAC for 100 C919 jets. The bigger question is if international carriers will be tempted to buy. Christian Scherer, the CEO of Airbus' commercial aircraft division, has said the C919 “isn't going to rock the boat.” However, one Boeing executive said the planemaker is factoring in competition from the C919 in its long-term forecast. Next, TUI CEO Sebastian Ebel believes recent protests in the Canary Islands against mass tourism aren't about the industry itself. He says residents are angry about a shortage of housing, writes Travel Experiences Reporter Jesse Chase-Lubitz. Protestors are calling on authorities to limit tourist arrivals to ease pressure on the environment, infrastructure and housing supply. Chase-Lubitz notes many Canary Islands residents argue that mass tourism is pricing them out of their homes. However, Ebel said the unregulated online booking platforms are the reason housing prices have gone up — not tourism as a whole. Ebel blamed individual trips, which include people booking local apartments, for causing more housing to be offered as holiday accommodation. Finally, columnist Colin Nagy argues the ideals of luxury hospitality have been distorted so much that guests are struggling to understand reality: Great properties don't get the attention they deserve, and others serve up superficial goods but fail to deliver. He looks at the problems and suggests ways to fix them. Nagy cites the decline of travel media as one area of concern, noting he believes thoughtful, unbiased commentary on hotels is disappearing. He lists writers and publications worth reading. Nagy also writes that luxury offerings all look the same, and urges readers to support brands carving out unique spaces. Risky Business in Rising China w/ Mark Atkeson AZ TRT S05 EP06 (221) 2-11-2024 What We Learned This Week Mark worked in many industries in China - Aircrafts, EV Cars, Mobile Phones, Internet Co. & Aircraft Parts Mark first worked in Japan w/ Sony, China must be careful, not to repeat Japan‘s Lost Decade of 1990s China has a lots of investment in EV Car & Solar Market US v China Rivalry is not dying down, two most important Tech countries, who must learn to co-exist Guest: Mark Atkeson Mark Atkeson is an international business leader, investor, entrepreneur, and author. A foremost expert on doing business in China, Mark managed, partnered in or provided services to Chinese-based companies for more than three decades in industries ranging from machine tools to aircraft engines, automotive manufacturing, mobile technology, startup venture investing, and aviation asset trading. Most recently, Mark wrote and released Risky Business in Rising China: Deals, Ordeals and Lessons Learned as an American Entrepreneur in a Surging Superpower Grappling with Growing Pains, chronicling his real-life experiences managing joint ventures and startup companies in China. Now living in California, Mark continues participating in the Chinese economy as founder and managing partner of China Aviation Partners LLC, which provides software services, market research and other consulting for China-related businesses. Mark is a graduate of Yale University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with master's degrees in Electrical Engineering and Business Administration. For more than 30 years, American entrepreneur Mark Atkeson found himself in the trenches of the Chinese economy managing joint ventures and startup companies. His new memoir, RISKY BUSINESS IN RISING CHINA: Deals, Ordeals and Lessons Learned as an American Entrepreneur in a Surging Superpower Grappling with Growing Pains, chronicles Atkeson's real-life experiences as the world's most populous nation transformed itself into a global economic and military superpower. Over his three-decade career, Atkeson worked across a variety of industries ranging from aircraft maintenance to electric-vehicle production, mobile internet to venture capital. In addition to Atkeson's behind-the-scenes business dealings with entrepreneurs and government officials, the book offers an unprecedented glimpse into Chinese society, its economy and its governance into the near and distant future. RISKY BUSINESS IN RISING CHINA has received high praise from readers. Here's what people are saying: “Atkeson is a talented storyteller whose diverse and adventurous China business career winds along the path of China's progress and setbacks.” – James McGregor, American author, journalist and businessman, and three-decade resident of China “Mark Atkeson's China business memoir recounts his peripatetic career from the early days of the Open Door Policy to the Modern China of 2023 in an honest, humorous and detailed way. This book will be valuable for anyone seeking to understand the often messy ‘inside story' of China's rise in the late 20th Century, and the role that foreign managers and investors played in the process.” – David G. Brooks, former chairman, Coca-Cola Greater China and Korea “If you want to understand today's China, and the forces changing it, you need to read Atkeson's book.” – John Clasen, former director of China business development, Magellan Aviation Group Notes: Seg 1 Marc worked in China from the late 1980s to just after 2010. He saw the country go through their reform phase, and then capitalist rise. For nearly 20 years the political ideology took a backseat to market forces. An astounding 800 million people came out of poverty. Mark worked with lots of companies in his career, dealing in venture capital, mobile phones, Internet, companies, EV cars, machines, and aircraft. China is the 2nd most advanced nation in the world in technology, behind the US. Chinese Internet company TikTok is just one example of the Chinese advancement in AI and tech. Products that people use on an average day usually have some connection to China, like manufacturing. Giant US corporations like Walmart, Amazon and Apple are all very dependent on China. China is the 2nd largest economy in the world. The modernization of China was like a tidal wave from the 1970s to the early 2000s a 30+ year run. It seems though that in 2023 we've seen the crust of the wave with China slowing down. GDP in China is no longer 10% a year but more like 2 to 5%. Both property and consumer sales are down. China has a middle class of 400 million people and most of their net worth is in their real estate. Real estate has been down in China the last few years, so millions of people have taken a hit. Mark worked in Japan for Sony Corp. from 1988 to 1989. Japan in the 1980s was the rising superpower to challenge the US. It was number 1 in growth. Then in 1990, the dual economic bubble burst (stock mkt & real estate) in Japan and they entered their lost decade. It took 30 years for the real estate in stock market to get back to the 1989 levels. China may be facing some of the similar problems of Japan, dealing with too much growth, leverage, debt, and possibly demographics. China will need decades to de-leverage from their current debt situation. Seg 2 Mark's grandfather was stationed in China in the late 1930s. This was during the start of the conflict with Japan and pre-World War II. Mark‘s father worked in Far East banking circa 1970s – 19080s. Mark actually took Chinese in college. In 1982 he took his first trip to China. He remembers the country being poor with small buildings and very few cars. During the 1980s foreign businesses were investing more in China. In the early 1990s, Mark got his first job in China working the aircraft industry. They were maintaining airplanes for a Chinese airline. Regulations were lax and implementation was lacking. He ran a factory in China in the Szechuan province. They installed the Toyota production system, for more efficiency, collaboration, built and grew the factory. Factory dealt with diesel and fuel. Unfortunately, corruption and theft mafia style was very common. Example of the corruption was the sales force would take bribes. This was a state owned auto group and corruption. Scams were not uncommon in the business world in communist type countries. Seg 3 In 2001, Mark got involved in a venture capital company. He was being replaced by the local population and younger managers to run the factories he had built up. He decided it was time to transition to a new industry. Him and some partners created an investment fund. They were investing in products in mobile tech and the Internet. He could see the upcoming Internet business on phones which were very popular in China. Consumer products like payments, info services and entertainment. The idea was to build an incubator - set up to invest in Chinese entrepreneurs. Then raise Series A funding and strategic buyers over the long term for an exit. They were paying 8 Chinese engineers for 12 months in an angel investing deal for just $100,000. It was a Portfolio of 10 businesses, involved in things like gaming and payments. Result: 8 out of 10 of the businesses return 0%, 1 did OK, and 1 was a home run. The home run company made a deal with China mobile for an exit and sale to a NASDAQ listed company in 2007. After that he represented US companies that acquired Chinese Internet businesses and Mark was a liaison to the US company in China. Mark actually worked in Internet entertainment. They put on a singing contest which acquired 800 million votes from audiences with cell phone text voting. At the time, this was a major example of democracy - voting through Phone. This was regulated out of existence. Seg 4 BYD EV car company was a mobile phone company and supplied to Apple. China makes good low-cost cars and has a lot of electric vehicle development. In 2008 Tesla was building electric vehicles, when oil was priced at $140 a barrel. Circle back to US with US engineers going to China to build the EV cars. Design was localized in China. EV cars has 3 challenges – tech, then US safety requirements, then fit & finish of the car. Produce cars in China and then sell in California. 2012 was the end of the road for Mark working in China. He was working in Hong Kong with an AR financing leasing and appraisals type airline business. They would buy an old A23 or A3 aircraft, disassemble and sell the parts. It was like a high-end junkyard business. These were Chinese aircraft models. Mark connected with a company in Florida, who had a business partner in Air China. They moved on to buy 747 and disassemble them in the Chinese Beijing airport. Now Mark' career came full circle in Aircrafts, with salvaging aircraft 20 years later. What is the future of China? US v China rivalry not dying down. They are the two most important tech innovators on AI batteries and solar and must figure out how to coexist. Tesla makes more cars in China versus the US. They have a big factory in Shanghai. Apple outsources to China in their supply chain. Chinese economy has slowed from 10% growth per year to 3%. China may not be 10 feet anymore but it's still 6 foot four. The Chinese private economy and services could ultimately come to the US. BYD EV car company as an example, that could become the face of a Chinese company in the US. The number of direct flights between China and the United States will be further increased next month as a result of positive steps made by both sides to promote an orderly recovery of international passenger travel. The US Department of Transportation said on Friday that Chinese airlines could make 35 roundtrip flights to the US a week, up from 24, starting Nov 9.The number will be equal to the number China will allow for US airlines. In total, Chinese and US carriers will be allowed to operate 70 weekly round-trip flights from Nov 9.Seven Chinese airlines will operate the flights: Air China, Beijing Capital, China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan, Sichuan and Xiamen airlines, according to an order amendment released by the US Department of Transportation on Friday.According to the amendment, the goal is to improve the environment for airline companies from China and the US to maintain "a competitive balance and fair and equal opportunity".The US will continue ongoing and productive dialogue with the Civil Aviation Administration of China to facilitate a gradual, broader reopening of the air service market between both countries, the document said. Also on Friday, Liang Nan, director of the transport department of the CAAC, said, "The administration will continue to encourage and support Chinese and foreign airlines to resume international passenger flights, improving the international route network and supporting people movements between China and foreign countries to ensure stable foreign trade and investment."The new winter and spring civil aviation season in China started on Sunday and will end on March 30. During the season, China's international flights are expected to return to 70 percent of the volume seen in 2019, Liang said. She said that 13,004 international flights involving 65 countries are planned every week during the season, but the number between China and the US has not yet been released.Due to the pandemic, international flights to and from China were greatly reduced. In March 2020, China introduced the "circuit breaker" policy — suspending flights operated by an airline for two weeks if five or more passengers tested positive for COVID-19 upon landing in China, or for four weeks if 10 or more passengers tested positive.Only a very small number of international passenger flights continued to operate during the pandemic. Data from the CAAC showed that in August 2021, the number of flights to and from China was about 2.15 percent of the volume recorded in 2019.The number of international flights has risen gradually since January, after China optimized its response measures to COVID-19 and promoted the resumption of cross-border air travel. From Oct 16 to 22, a total of 7,750 international passenger flights operated, about 51 percent of the volume before the pandemic. Those flights involved 61 countries, according to the administration.Although the international civil aviation market has recovered well, China-US air service is far from fully resumed. In 2019, more than 300 round trips were operated every week between China and the US, according to Lin Zhijie, a civil aviation industry analyst. After the increase next month, the number of China-US flights will be about 25 percent compared with the volume in 2019, he said. The volume of flights affects prices. According to Orbitz, a global travel planning website, the cheapest price ticket from Shanghai to San Francisco in November is about $620.The lowest ticket price for the end of this month is around $890, as of Sunday morning."Restricted by the number of flights, the ticket price between China and the US is still high, with about 10,000 yuan ($1,366) for a one-way ticket. The operation of more flights from 48 to 70 per week can help lower ticket prices," Lin said. There are two key factors in promoting the recovery of passenger travel between China and the US — an increase in the number of flights and visa issuances, according to Lin."It still takes quite long, about two to four months, to get a visa. As the number of flights has gradually recovered, the visa problem has become a bottleneck that needs to be solved," he said."At present, the resumption of flights between China and the US has released positive signals, and it can indeed alleviate the problem of insufficient flight capacity and high fares, but the recovery in the future is still uncertain," Lin said.Reporter: Luo Wangshu

The Chinese philosophical concept of yin and yang describes how forces that appear opposite or contrary may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world. Can we observe this concept at work in the highly unnatural world of college admissions? Amy and Mike invited educator Belle Liu to explain the relevance of yin and yang in college admissions. What are five things you will learn in this episode? How would you describe a Yin-Yang Philosophy? Does this school of thought apply to college advising? What does holistic college advising look like? How can this philosophy be applied to parenting? Does this philosophy apply to test prep? Topic: Airlines targeting post-pandemic ‘revenge travel' The blow caused to the airline industry by the COVID-19 pandemic has been especially felt by budget airlines, which mostly operate narrow-bodied passenger jets and have therefore been unable to develop a sideline in air freight during the pandemic. According to one academic's analysis, when the outbreak stabilizes, businesses are targeting a trend in so-called “revenge travel.” However, she also hopes that, rather than the pre-pandemic price wars between budget airlines, the consolidation that has taken place during the pandemic will restore healthy competition in the industry. According to associate professor Melody Dai of National Cheng Kung University's Department of Transportation and Communication Management Science, costs per flight have not changed during the pandemic, but if carriers are required to implement social-distancing seating plans, leaving empty seats between passengers, this would eat into airlines' profit margins, causing a fresh headache for the industry. Dai says she hopes that budget airlines will manage to survive, since they help stimulate Taiwan's domestic tourism sector as well as the wider economy. Dai says that choosing to operate flights during the pandemic is a test of airlines' ability to sustain losses, but the crisis may also prove to be a turnaround for the industry. Dai says there are many variables to the pandemic. She says that once the outbreak stabilizes, if the demand for “revenge travel” exceeds supply, this could resolve the pre-pandemic situation of supply exceeding demand, which led to price wars among budget airlines. The consolidation that the pandemic has triggered within the airline industry could bring about a return to healthy competition, says Dai. One industry insider stated that, despite the lockdowns and reduced number of travelers and flights during the pandemic, the industry is bullish about post-pandemic prospects for both freight and passenger travel in the flourishing Asian region. The insider added that a trend in “revenge travel” could cause short-haul routes to become particularly busy. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/09/12/2003764205 Next Article Topic: Rebranding is beneficial to China Airlines. Taiwan's Legislative Yuan voted on Wednesday to work towards renaming China Airlines, one of the national air carriers. Such a proposal immediately prompted various questions: Would doing so be prohibitively expensive? Would the airline lose aviation rights as a result of the act? The airline industry is unimaginably complex, so there is no definite answer to such a nuanced topic. While the issue of renaming Taiwan's national airline is inherently controversial, let us move away from political polarization and analyze what is best for China Airlines, from a business perspective. Firstly, if China Airlines were to rebrand itself to reflect a more Taiwanese identity, it is undeniable that the airline would incur costs. This is because airlines logos appear everywhere: from check-in counters, lounges, to even the napkins passengers use onboard. So yes, it would be a significant investment for China Airlines to repaint their planes to rebrand across their network. However, an airline's profitability is as much determined by revenue than it is affected by costs. In the long term, if an airline is able to attract more customers than now, such rebranding efforts would pay off. Rebranding China Airlines could address previous issues. For example, many people in English-speaking countries believe the word “China” has negative connotations, and they don't associate the airline with Taiwan when they hear about “China” Airlines. In addition, China Airlines is often confused with Air China, which is owned by the Chinese government. In recent years, safety and service incidents associated with Air China have damaged the Taiwanese airline's reputation, as the majority of the world simply cannot tell the two carriers apart, largely due to the confusing naming. On the other hand, CAL's main competitor, EVA Air, is well known as a Taiwanese company offering high standards of flight safety and service. If China Airlines can change a name that has made marketing difficult in the past, the benefits of rebranding could outweigh the potential costs. The second area of concern from China Airlines' perspective would be aviation rights, which grants airlines the privilege to enter, fly over, or land in another country's airspace. Such rights, critical to any airline's operations, are as a result of decades of negotiations between airline companies and regulatory agencies. Some have indicated the possibility of China Airlines losing these rights because of a name change, but it is important to understand that rebranding does not have to include changing the legal name. Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij。 For instance, the major European airline based in Amsterdam is branded as KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, but the three letters KLM stand for its registered legal name, Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij. In a similar fashion, China Airlines could perhaps rebrand as “CAL Formosa Airlines,” while retaining its formal name, to avoid compromising its aviation rights. Finally, while airlines tend to stay out of politics, companies such as China Airlines also have to consider its ability to continue flying into existing markets, particularly China. Critics of the idea to rename China Airlines have voiced concerns about angering the Communist Party in Beijing, and have speculated that the Chinese government would ban CAL from flying into Chinese airspace. While such a situation would indeed be unfavorable, and the possibility of occurrence cannot be ruled out, CAL could minimize risk by choosing a more politically neutral name. For example, by utilizing words such as “Formosa” or “Taipei”, the airline could stay out of the Taiwan-China debate and continue serving its existing passengers with minimal controversy. At the end of the day, even without changing China Airlines' name to “Taiwan Airlines”, the company can respond to the voices of the people by removing “China” from its name and avoid confusion and controversy altogether. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Dongfang Hour China Aero/Space News Roundup! Without further ado, the news update from the week of 11 - 17 January. 1) iSpace Announces Plans for an IPO on the Star Board iSpace announced plans to IPO on China’s STAR Board, or 科创板. The STAR Board is a Shanghai-based stock market focusing on early-stage, oftentimes higher-risk companies. China’s main stock indices in Shanghai and Shenzhen, as well as other indices in Beijing, have rather stringent regulations for metrics such as profitability, which makes it hard for early-stage companies to list. The Chinese government has progressively become more open to early-stage companies taking more risk with larger amounts of money, and created the STAR Board to allow earlier-stage, oftentimes not profitable, or not revenue-generating companies to list. Other space companies have listed on the STAR Board, including PIEsat. The press release from the STAR Board News only specifies that CITIC Securities and Tianfeng Securities will advise the listing, and does not offer any additional information.2) Several updates on CASC making progress on propulsion technology CASC’s Academy of Aerospace Liquid Propulsion Technology (AALPT), completed a 500s hot fire test of the YF-77 heavy thrust hydrolox engines, used notably on the Long March 5. This was the 4th 500s test, in a series to study and improve the reliability of the engine. 500s is about 4 times the length the engine would normally run during an actual launch, before engine cut-off. It is worth noting that this is in the context of a critical year for Long March 5(B), which will launch the 3 modules of the Chinese space station in the coming months. China has also been making progress with its next-generation, a 220t thrust liquid-fueled hydrolox engine. This massive engine would power the second stage of China’s future super-heavy rocket, the Long March 9. Compared to the current Chinese state-of-the-art hydrolox engine, the YF-77 which powers the Long March 5, the new generation Chinese engine has approx. 3 to 4 times the amount of thrust. The largest Chinese solid engine was fired on December 30, in Xi’an. During the 130-second firing test, the engine reached a peak of 260t of thrust. The engine is developed by AASPT (CASC’s Academy of Aerospace Solid Propulsion Technology), also known as the 4th Academy, and based in Xi’an. The current engine breaks multiple records: largest thrust, diameter, and ignition time (in China).3) US adds 9 Chinese companies to a blacklist, including COMAC and Air China Group The US added on Jan. 15 a list of 9 Chinese companies to a DoD blacklist, which lists companies which have ties with the Chinese military. These include Chinese aircraft manufacturer COMAC, which carries China’s commercial aircraft projects such as the C919; as well as Air China Group (CNAH), the parent company of Air China, and also, interestingly, one of China’s leading consumer tech companies Xiaomi. This blacklist “merely” bans American individuals and companies from investing in the blacklisted companies, but does not have an impact on export of goods. Consequently, the impact on COMAC and Air China will be limited, as they remain to a very large extent Chinese state-owned companies. This is much less the case for Xiaomi, which is listed in the US and in Hong-Kong (and which stocks plunged after the announcement). US investors will have to divest in listed companies before November 11 2021. ---------------------------------------------Follow us on YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter (https://twitter.com/DongFangHour), as an audio podcast, and on our official website: https://www.dongfanghour.com/

No me dio tiempo a despedirme.

After only two years of restarting the route, Air China will suspend the direct flight from Beijing-Zurich from October 14, 2019. According to the Swiss travel news platform - "Travel News" reported, learned from the tourism partners that have business dealings with Air China, Beijing direct flights operated by Air China to and from Zurich(CA781/782) will be grounded from October 14. Maiden flight for Air China's 50th A330 The news triggered speculation by the Swiss media. Many Swiss business and tourism agencies are concerned that Chinese tourists may be reduced as a result. According to data from the Swiss Tourism Board, the number of Chinese tourists staying in Switzerland in 2000 was 234,000 and soared to about 1.73 million in 2018. Chinese tourists spend an average of 380 Swiss francs per day in Switzerland, which is also the highest among foreign tourists. The analysis believes that Air China's flight to and from Zurich will potentially lead to a shortage of passengers. In June 2017, after several years of grounding, Air China restarted the direct flight from Beijing to Zurich. The source speculates that Air China's reason for abandoning this direct route is related to the two air crashes of the Boeing 737MAX. In the situation of current fleet shortage, the relatively new route from Beijing to Zurich quickly became a victim. Air China is introducing a large number of Airbus A350 passenger aircraft. Perhaps in the next two to three years, this aircraft will be used on the direct route from Beijing to Zurich. Also included in Air China's winter season timetable, the Chengdu-Kunming-Yangon, Chengdu-Lhasa-Kathmandu and Hangzhou-Surat Thani routes will be discontinued as well (all starting October 27). Air China continues to believe in the potential of the German-speaking Swiss market. However, the focus is now on the Geneva flight which operates under a joint venture agreement with the Lufthansa Group. "Why did China Air China really suspended the Zurich route?" Although it make sense that Air China, like all other big carriers out there, it's facing aircraft shortage due to the global grounding of B737 MAX, however the Beijing - Zurich route is a long haul route that requires a wide-body aircraft. The route will operate til October with an Airbus A330 aircraft, out of the 59 A330s Air China currently operates, at least 22 of them are registered under operating leasing which is reaching its expiry date, Air China will have to retire them soon while finding replacement for them. First Air China A350-900 take off Although Air China has ordered 20 A350-900 aircraft from Airbus earlier this year, with the opening of Beijing's new daxing international airport, Air China will soon have new time slots opening up at PEK due to China Eastern and China Southern moving its operation to the new airport (PKX), in addition, Air China 'luckily' got 10 prosent slots share at the new airport as well. So the question really comes down to, why won't Air China order more wide-body aircrafts? The A350 series is unlikely to be delivered in the short term and is now scheduled to be at least from 2020. The B787 series can't be delivered too quickly either. It's an unfortunate coincidence that now they even got one A330 less relating to news happened a few days ago. On the 27th August, crew for Air China flight CA183 from Beijing to Tokyo found out that the cargo space in front of the aircraft was sending out smoke. the fire quickly spread after the plane caught fire. The upper part of the nose has been burned through and the structure of the aircraft may have been destroyed. Air China A330 B-5958 @ PEK The aircraft that caught fire in this warehouse was Air China A330-300 passenger aircraft with registration number B-5958, which was introduced in December 2014. According to its flight record, the aircraft operated a round-trip flight from Beijing to Singapore today and landed at Beijing at 15:00. According to Air China's r...
On July 11, China International Airlines Co., Ltd. ("Air China") announced that the company and its wholly-owned subsidiary Air China Import and Export Co., Ltd. ("Air China Import and Export Corporation") intend to purchase 20 A350-900 aircraft from Airbus. Air China's A350-900 The statement shows that the basic price of each aircraft in this transaction includes the fuselage, additional components and engines. According to the open market offer, the listing price of the 20 Airbus A350-900 aircraft traded totaled approximately $6.537 billion. Airbus will give Air China a larger preferential price in the form of a credit memo. Therefore, the actual consideration for this transaction is lower than the listing price of the aircraft mentioned above. The 20 aircraft to be purchased are scheduled to be delivered in batches between 2020 and 2022. In addition, the last five aircraft have the right to convert to A350-1000s. Air China said that the transaction will expand the transportation capacity of their fleet. Regardless of their potential fleet adjustment based on the market environment and their fleet age, this order will increase the transportation capacity of Air China by approximately 9.7%, based on the available ton-kilometer ratio as of December 31, 2018. First Air China A350-900 Take Off On August 8, 2018, Air China introduced the first A350-900 aircraft in mainland China. On August 14, the first Airbus A350-900 aircraft debuted in Shanghai. According to the financial report, in 2018, Air China introduced a total of six A350 series aircraft. During the four-month operation period, the A350 series had a passenger load factor of 79.71% and a daily utilization rate of 11.25 hours. Air China believes that this transaction will help optimize the fleet structure and capacity supplement, and it is expected that the cost-effective performance of Airbus aircraft will be better improved. Maiden flight For Air China's 50th A330 On June 12 this year, Air China opened a direct flight to Rome from and to Hangzhou. This is the first long-haul intercontinental route opened by Air China in the Zhejiang provience. It is also the fourth European scheduled passenger route opened by Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport following Hangzhou-Amsterdam, Moscow and Madrid. The flight number of the route is CA731/732, 3 flights per week, and the schedule is Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. The route is operated by Airbus 330-200, with 180-degree full-flat seats in business class, cabin-wide personal entertainment system, which can bring better flight experience for passengers. Air China's Paris sales department announced that it will open a direct flight from Beijing to Nice. Air China will thus become the first airline in China to open direct flights to a second French city other than Paris. Air China will open the Beijing-Nice route on August 2rd and fly the route three times weekly. Air China will also launch Airbus's latest wide-body passenger aircraft A350 on the Beijing-Paris route on August 1st. Air China A350-900 Tail Search More PostsSearch

As if trapped in the Netflix series “Russian Doll,” we keep dying and waking up in the bathroom. Recording this episode right after Michael Cohen’s congressional testimony, our heads were spinning. We nevertheless attempted to process what we saw, including the wild outburst from Congressman Chip Roy, Matt Gaetz’s thuggish Tweet and Michael Cohen’s emerging expertise in the field of ethics. Clicks And Leads | For Entrepreneurs | Digital Marketing | Success Thinking | Being A Digital Nomad
What's stopping you getting started with something you want to do? Are you sure you really, really want to do it? There's always a good reason not to do things - especially the things you don't really want to do. This week I've had to force myself through several things I didn't want to do, my brain was telling me I had good reasons not to do them but they weren't reasons at all, they were EXCUSES! Clicks And Leads is a "tongue in cheek" digital marketing Vzine by entrepreneur, author, podcaster, speaker, Nicola Cairncross. On the blog Turning Pro Learning New Stuff Learning Means Failing When You Fall Behind Learning In A Group Do The Work Self Validation Things & People We Love On Valentine’s Day Deep Dive Learning Prefer to read? Hi everyone, Nicola here. Hope you're all well. So, what's been happening this week? I've been booking flights to Australia. It's a terrifying thing, I can tell you. I've had to book a flight from England to Australia and Australia back to England. I've had to book flights from Athens to England and then from England back to Kalamata because we're in the period where, when I'm away, it's the period where they change over and you can actually get direct flights to the local airport. I don't know why I find it so terrifying, booking flights, I think it's something about the commitment of it all and the thought of being in the air for all that time, I've got to say. I'm not very good at long-term committing in advance, I much prefer to do things on the spur of the moment so typically, I've left this to the very last minute. Luckily, I didn't have too much extra to pay, there was very cheap flights available with Air China but they were something like 32 or 38 hours long, meaning a very long stop-over somewhere like Bangkok. And I didn't really fancy that so I decided to opt for paying the extra couple hundred quid and having a 21 and 23 hour flight instead, so while I'm not looking forward to it, I think I've made the best of it. It's with a decent airline and it's laying over in Dubai which, you know, is really quite a pleasant airport. So yeah, I made myself do it the other day. It was quite hard, psychologically, to make myself do it but I just got on with it and finally, I've got all the confirmations and everything. I also had a little bit of a thing where you had to wait, I wanted to pay on my debit card but I didn't want to do that because if, you know, my airline went bust just before Christmas so I thought I'd better hang on and do it on my credit card instead, so that's what I did. Apparently, you're covered. Still trying to get my money back from the one that went bust, though. Anyway, let's get on with the show, shall we? So, you may notice this week I'm a little bit red in the face. That's because I have just had a rather hot shower. That's because it gets a little bit cold in these houses in the winter, unless you've got the fire on, which I haven't, I don't tend to do during the day. So, hot shower followed by getting dressed, followed by blow drying hair because I'm talking to you guys, equals red face. So I was thinking to myself, oh, I better hang on till my face goes down a bit and then I thought no, don't do that because I'm already late with this vzine and I need to get it to Phoebe so she can do the editing. And she won't be happy if I give it to her late and then expect it done on a quick turnaround. So, even though I'm bright red and that's not the ideal scenario, I thought no, I've got to just press on, because if I don't get started, I won't get done and I need to go out soon. So I was thinking about this in conjunction with the whole thing about booking my airline flights and hanging on as long as possible to do that. It's a combination of being reluctant to commit myself, trying to wait for the most ideal set of circumstances, but then the pressing deadline comes and you have to get the thing done,

Welcome to the 31st installment of the Caixin-Sinica Business Brief, a weekly podcast that brings you the most important business stories of the week from China's top source for business and financial news. Produced by Kaiser Kuo of our Sinica Podcast, it features a business news roundup, plus conversations with Caixin reporters and editors. This week, we analyze why China plans to grant overseas investors greater access to the country's financial market. We look at Apple's removal of the popular Skype voice and instant messaging service from its China app store after being informed it violated local rules. We are amazed at the news that two Boeing 747 jumbo jets were sold in an online auction on Alibaba's Taobao. We explain how a deadly fire in Beijing slowed deliveries across the city. We discuss the demise of Wuhan Huantou, a local government-backed bike-rental service in the capital of Hubei Province, in the face of pressure from the shared bikes that have flooded into cities across China. We learn that Air China has suspended flights from Beijing to North Korea's capital due to weak demand. We explore how Chinese social networking giant Tencent briefly passed U.S. peer Facebook in market value to become the world's fifth-most-valuable company. In addition, we talk with Caixin senior editor Doug Young about microlending in China, and have a conversation with Caixin editor Poornima Weerasekara about a child abuse scandal in a Beijing kindergarten. Here is the news.China&`&s new cyber security law, which went into effect recently, is not aimed at limiting foreign companies&`& access to the Chinese market.China&`&s Internet regulator said the law is designed to safeguard China&`&s cyberspace sovereignty, national security, public interest, as well as the rights and interests of citizens, legal persons and other organizations. The Cyberspace Administration of China said in a statement that it does not restrict foreign companies or their technology and products from entering the Chinese market, nor does it limit the orderly, free flow of data. The document said China is entitled to make laws and rules to regulate its cyberspace sovereignty following international practice. The law was passed in November 2016 at a bimonthly session of the National People&`&s Congress Standing Committee after a third reading.A regulation requiring Internet products and services that may affect national security to undergo a security review will go into effect on the same day as the cyber security law.Reviews focus on whether the products or services are secure and sufficiently managed, and on assessing the risk of illegal control, disruption or interruption. They also evaluate the risk of providers using their products or services to illegally gather, store, process or make use of user information. This is Special English.Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has called on Germany to help China-developed large passenger plane C919 get an airworthiness certificate from the European Union.Li made the call during his talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. He was on an official visit to Germany for an annual meeting between the two heads of government, a mechanism that has been in place since 2004.The twin-engine C919 made its maiden flight on May 5 in Shanghai with five crew members on board but no passengers. The success makes China the fourth jumbo jet producer after the United States, Western Europe and Russia. With a standard range of 4,075 kilometers, the narrow-bodied jet is comparable with the updated Airbus 320 and Boeing&`&s new generation 737 planes, signaling the country&`&s entry into the global aviation market.China has taken pride in developing the homegrown jumbo jet, regarding it as a symbol of national strength. In 2007, the State Council approved plans to develop a large passenger jet. In November 2015, the first C919 jet rolled off the assembly line. More than 200,000 technicians worked on the project.A total of 23 foreign and domestic customers, including China&`&s national carrier Air China, had placed orders for 570 aircraft as of May 5.You&`&re listening to Special English. He said they cannot hear each other clearly due to the rain, so they have to be extra careful during the operation. There will be five dives for Jiaolong in the Yap Trench, with the last dive being planned for June 12.According to scientists on the ship, the dives will focus on research in deep-sea biotic communities and gene resources.Jiaolong completed a series of dives in the Mariana Trench on June 1 and was transferred aboard its support ship to the Yap Trench afterwards. The Mariana and Yap trenches are located in the west Pacific Ocean. The Yap Trench has a depth of 8,527 meters, and the Mariana Trench, the deepest known point of Earth&`&s oceans, has a depth of 11,034 meters.Named after a mythical dragon, Jiaolong reached its deepest point of 7,062 meters in the Mariana Trench in June 2012. Now the news continues.India has launched its heaviest rocket, along with a satellite, that is now believed to be able to send humans into space in the future. The domestically-produced rocket, named Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle or Mark III, lifted off from the southern spaceport in Andhra Pradesh state at 5:28 p.m. local time. The state-owned Indian Space Research Organisation said the communication satellite that the rocket carried weighs more than three tonnes. The countdown for the launch of the 640-tonne rocket began on Sunday. In another development, India has successfully test fired its first all-weather tracked-chassis Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile.India&`&s state-run broadcaster All India Radio said the missile was launched from a mobile launcher in the Integrated Test Range off the Odisha coast at Chandipur at around 12:39 p.m. local time. The broadcaster reported that the test was carried out for validating various parameters of the sophisticated weapon system to further strengthen its air defence system. This is Special English.A survey of the California Current System along the U.S. West Coast of the United States found persistent, highly acidified water throughout the ecologically critical nearshore habitat.Led by Francis Chan, a marine ecologist at Oregon State University, researchers participating in the survey said conditions will continue to worsen because the atmospheric carbon dioxide primarily to blame for the increase in acidification has been rising substantially in recent years. While the findings of the study, which was published recently in Nature Scientific Reports, identified "hotspots" of pH, or the potential of hydrogen, measurements as low as any oceanic surface waters in the world, there were "refuges" of more moderate pH environments that could become havens for some marine organisms to escape more highly acidified waters. The threat of ocean acidification is global and though it sometimes seems far away, it is happening on the West Coast of the United States and those waters are already hitting the beaches. Chan said that ten years ago, they were focusing on the tropics with their coral reefs as the place most likely to be affected by ocean acidification. But the California Current System is getting hit with acidification earlier and more drastically than other locations around the world. You&`&re listening to Special English. The threat has particularly worsened in pastures or grasslands; meadows are also under increasing pressure. The Federal Office for Nature Conservation has reported some positive developments in coastal regions as well as next to rivers and streams which are benefiting from restoration or environmental protection plans as well as better sewage treatment plants. However, figures are much less positive for groundwater due to high nitrogen pollution caused by fertilizers from intensive farming. Many stagnant water volumes are also affected. There are many types of natural habitats in Germany including 46 types of water environments and 20 types of arable and fallow arable land. President Xi Jinping's wife Peng Liyuan says people from all walks of life should do more to support children orphaned by HIV and AIDS. Peng made the remarks at an opening ceremony for the 2016 summer camp for Chinese and African children. The event, entitled "Love in the Sunshine", has been held at the Palace Museum in Beijing. Peng is the World Health Organization goodwill ambassador for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. Peng said that despite their nationality or race, children orphaned by AIDS are the future of the world. It is the common responsibility of society to love and care for children orphaned by HIV and AIDS, so that they can grow up soundly and happily. The event was a part of the follow-up actions of a China-Africa anti-AIDS advocacy campaign launched last year by Peng and the Organization of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS. The summer camp is sponsored by the Chinese Association of STD and AIDS Prevention and Control, and is the 7th in a row since the camp began in 2010. Fifty-seven children orphaned by AIDS from China, South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe attended this year's summer camp. This is Special English. With its open culture and growing economy, China is becoming a popular destination for higher education seekers in Australia. According to a report by The Sydney Morning Herald on Sunday, there are 5,000 Australians studying in Chinese universities, up by 83 percent compared with the figure in 2011. The report said the number of Australian students studying in China has kept growing in recent years, attributing the change to China's open society and healthy economy. A Chinese education expert was quoted as saying that local Chinese companies are rising and they are becoming more and more competitive. Other factors have also contributed, including economic growth, a more service-orientated economy, and a more technologically-focused economy. Though the number of Australian students in China is increasing, it pales comparing with that of Chinese students heading to Australia and non-Australian international students in China. According to the Chinese Education Ministry, Chinese universities have an enrolment of almost 200,000 international students last year, surging 12 percent from a year earlier. Last year, students from South Korea, the United States and Thailand ranked the three biggest groups in China, while Beijing, Shanghai and Zhejiang province in eastern China are the top three destinations of foreign students. China now has 2,800 higher educational institutions, the second biggest number in the world. Aiming to attract up to 500,000 foreign students in 2020, China has kept increasing its educational input in recent years. You're listening to Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. China is planning to build its first domestically produced polar icebreaker. The Shanghai-based Jiangnan Shipyard has made the announcement, saying construction will start by the end of this year. China's current largest polar icebreaker, the "Xuelong", or Snow Dragon, was bought from the Ukrainian in 1993. China refitted it into a polar research vessel at a cost of 31 million yuan, almost 5 million U.S. dollars. The icebreaker was put into service the following year. So far, it has completed 32 expeditions in Antarctica and is now on its 7th Arctic expedition. The new home produced vessel will be 120 meters long which is smaller than the "Xuelong", but with stronger icebreaking power. The "Xuelong" can work non-stop, breaking 1-meter thick ice at a sailing speed of 2 knots; while the new vessel is designed to break 1-and-a-half-meter thick ice at a sailing speed of 3 knots. The Astronaut Center of China made the announcement recently while briefing an international training mission for astronauts. Chinese astronaut Ye Guangfu participated in the mission. Ye is the first Chinese citizen to receive "CAVES" training organized by the European Space Agency. "CAVES" is short for Cooperative Adventure for Valuing and Exercising human behavior and performance Skills. It is an advanced training course for astronauts. The training took place in underground caves in Sardinia in Italy. Prospective astronauts from Japan, Russia, Spain and the United States also took part in the training. The Astronaut Center of China says that in the future, China will strengthen international communication in astronaut training while also relying on its own efforts. It is not known whether further Chinese astronauts will be selected for CAVES training. China is considering the possibility of starting its own CAVES program, and had examined several potential sites. Ye and five others spent several days underground from July 1-7, simulating a mission exploring another planet. CAVES training puts them in environments that simulate spaceflight, as well as improving leadership, teamwork, decision-making and problem-solving skills. This is Special English. Relocation of two top Chinese airlines to a new airport in Beijing will help cut airfares for international passengers. The move will also improve services for national flagship carrier Air China, which will remain at Beijing Capital International Airport. China Eastern and China Southern Airlines, along with some other SkyTeam Alliance members, will move to Beijing's new international airport when it begins operation in 2019. Other carriers to be relocated will include Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Korean Air. National carrier Air China and other Star Alliance partners, including United Airlines, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines and Japanese airline ANA, will stay. Slot shortages at Beijing Capital International Airport have made it increasingly difficult for airlines to add flights and launch new routes. The ultra-large new airport will be in Daxing district in Beijing's southeastern suburbs. It is expected to serve those who travel to and from Beijing and its neighbors Tianjin and Hebei province. As the southern part of Beijing further develops, with more businesses and government agencies moving there, passengers will find it increasingly convenient to use the new airport. Since the new airport will be almost 50 kilometers from the downtown area, airline companies based there will likely offer cheaper ticket prices to attract passengers and tour groups. China will spend 36 million yuan, roughly 5 million US dollars, on geological disaster surveys in northwestern China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Starting in July, the fund will be allocated over three years to launch systematic surveys in two counties in the northern part of Kunlun Mountain, which is susceptible to frequent earthquakes. The surveys will focus on disaster risk levels and monitoring to help locals improve their ability of pre-warning and damage prevention. Satellites and drones will be used to collect data and monitor disasters in the area, while locals will attend training sessions on prevention. Xinjiang has complex weather and natural conditions, with 1 million square km, or 64 percent of the region's area, prone to geological disasters. A massive landslide killed 35 people in a village and forced the relocation of 200 others last month. This is Special English. Beijing's green industries could be worth 250 billion yuan, roughly 38 billion U.S. dollars, by 2020, particularly those focused on recycling and waste treatment. By the end of 2020, Beijing intends to employ some new technology including wastewater management and plastic recycling. A municipal official said recently that Beijing has laid out a plan to develop cutting-edge technology for environmental protection, including garbage processing and fuel control in some industries. According to Beijing's Action Plan on Technological Innovation, by next year, 20 major innovation projects will be carried out, some of which will improve the quality of the water discharged from wastewater recycling plants. One such project is an underground network that will benefit around 11 million residents in central China. Other projects have helped make it easier for local residents around Beijing to recycle household items including plastic bottles, electronic waste and clothes. Automatic recycling machines for plastic bottles were introduced in Beijing in 2012, allowing users to process used bottles and get paid directly through their smartphones. The heavyweight of China's space program, China's first astronaut Yang Liwei, made the remark recently on the occasion of the anniversary of China's first satellite launch 46 years ago. Yang said China does not rule out cooperating with any country, including the United States. The senior astronaut said payload has been reserved in the Chinese space station for international projects and foreign astronauts. The space station is due to enter service around 2022. China marked its first Space Day, which was newly designated by the government to commemorate China's first satellite launch on April 24, 1970. Upon request, China will also train astronauts for other countries, and jointly train astronauts with the European space station. Yang said the future of space exploration lies in international cooperation, and it's true for China as well as for the United States. Citing security reasons, the United States Congress passed a law in 2011 to prohibit NASA from hosting Chinese visitors at its facilities or working with researchers affiliated to any Chinese government entity or enterprise. The ban remains in effect. The US-dominated International Space Station, which unsurprisingly blocks China, is scheduled to end its service in 2024. China's space station will be the only operational one in outer space, at least for a while. This is Special English. Five domestic airlines have agreed to tackle air rage by blacklisting passengers who misbehave. The five airlines, including Air China and China Southern, are the country&`&s major carriers. They will collectively keep records of those who are not behaved. Improper behaviors include attacking on check-in counters, forcibly occupying airplanes and fighting on board an airplane. Passenger records will be shared throughout the country's civil aviation and tourism industries. Those who are blacklisted will face penalties including being denied special seats, ticket discounts, or even service. However, an official from the Civil Aviation University of China said airlines do not have the right to limit passengers&`& travel rights. The official said that although air passenger blacklists have been adopted overseas, there is no legal provision for them in China, adding that this may lead to disputes. Others say that the provisions for the blacklist should be decided by a third party rather than just the airlines. It is the first time that a blacklist has covered most of the domestic civil aviation industry. The five airlines and their subsidiaries handle more than 80 percent of China&`&s air traffic. The decision comes after the China Air Transport Association adopted a new management policy to record uncivilized behavior by air passengers. You are listening to Special English. China banned drug wholesalers from selling vaccines, according to a decision publicized on the nation&`&s Vaccination Day, which fell on April 25th. The decision requires B-class, or non-compulsory, vaccines to be distributed in the same way as A-class, which are covered by the national compulsory immunization program. It also requires disease control departments, hospitals and clinics to keep records of purchases and received inventory. According to the decision, China will establish a system to track vaccines. Enterprises and user agencies must record circulation and use, so all vaccines can be tracked across their life cycle. The public were shocked and appalled in March when the news that improperly stored vaccines worth millions of dollars were sold nationwide. More than 300 officials implicated in cases concerning the event will be penalized. In the eastern city of Ningbo, the number of vaccinated children decreased by around one fourth from March 18 to 31. Local authorities are trying to quell public unease. This is Special English. Individuals and organizations that conduct medically inessential prenatal sex discernment or sex-selective abortions will be fined up to 30,000 yuan, roughly 4,600 U.S. dollars. Under a revised regulation taking effect recently, besides a fine, the government will confiscate the income from such screenings and abortions, which are illegal in China. Those who introduce expectant parents to take up illegal prenatal sex discernment and selective abortion will also face the same punishment. The regulation has been jointly issued by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce and the China Food and Drug Administration. The revision to the law aims to tackle China&`&s high gender imbalance, a direct result of pre-birth sex discernment and sex-selective abortions driven by cultural preference for boys. The birth sex ratio stood at almost 114 in 2015, much higher than a normal ratio between 103 and 107, though it has decreased from 121 in 2004. In China, legitimate reasons for a hospital conducting a sex-selective abortion include serious genetic disease or deadly threat to the mother's health. It requires at least three senior doctors with a genetics background and clinical experience to decide whether prenatal sex discernment is necessary. If an abortion is necessary, the hospital must report the case to the local health department. You are listening to Special English. I&`&m Sam Duckett in Beijing. The State Council has published its major health care reform tasks for the year, with a general practitioner pilot program, and reduced reliance on drug revenue for health centers. This year, 200 cities will trial GP practices, making the service available to 15 percent of urban citizens and 30 percent of key groups. According to the statement from the State Council, China's Cabinet, GPs will open their practices to residents, providing them with basic, consistent medical services. The plan is part of a tiered health system being rolled out across the country. To improve local-level medical institutions, the government will allow physicians in public hospitals to practice or establish their own practices. Another health reform task this year will be the establishment of a pricing mechanism for medicine to reduce the cost born by patients. Patients will be given the choice of buying drugs from hospitals or retail pharmacies. The public hospital reform will be further advanced, as 100 more cities will carry out pilot public hospital reform this year. According to the pilot reform, revenues of public hospitals will not rely on drugs but medical service charges. This is Special English. Chinese scientists are working on new projects inspired by the documented case of a man who was cured of AIDS. They hope eventually find a way to ensure that humans are born with immunity to the condition. Nine years ago, a 41-year-old man, who has since been dubbed the "Berlin patient", was close to death and in the advanced stages of both AIDS and leukemia. Doctors gave him a stem cell transplant from an HIV-resistant donor, and miraculously cured both conditions. The event made him arguably the first person ever to be cured of AIDS. The remarkable case shed light on CCR5, a receptor in humans that helps HIV enter cells. The bone-marrow transplant had changed the Berlin patient&`&s gene to a mutation called CCR5-delta32, which blocks HIV. With new gene technology now available, Chinese scientists have recently moved forward with attempts to modify the CCR5 gene in embryos, advancing their drive to ensure humans are born already immune to HIV. In the latest case, researchers from the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University used a gene editing technique to attempt to replace the CCR5 gene in 26 human embryos. The researchers tried to give the embryos the HIV-resistant mutation. Four embryos were successfully edited, while the other 22 cases failed to produce the desired results. Is China's slowing economy taking its toll on the country's Big Three carriers? So far Air China, China Eastern and China Southern have held up well and posted a rather good 2015. But the fourth quarter of 2015 showed some signs of deterioration—even by the standards of this off-peak quarter. In the U.S., Alaska Airlines and Virgin America are, unlike a lot of mergers in the past, merging from a position of strength. But is that a good thing? The move came as four executives of Qvod stood trail in Beijing earlier this month. They have been charged with spreading pornography for profit. The trial was broadcast live online. The smartphone comes with a 4.8-inch display and Quad-core processor. It features a distinctive home and application layout for easy access to favorite apps. Samsung has been struggling to develop its own operating system to rely less on the Android, which has been working on supports for other Android-based device makers. The Samsung Z will be available in Russia in the third quarter of this year, and is planned to expand to other markets. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Japan has begun its first 4K ultra high-definition broadcasting trail TV service. The Channel 4K is operated by "NexTV-F", meaning "Next Generation Television and Broadcasting Promotion Forum". The channel will air contents provided by member TV stations, covering live music, travel and sports programs, for roughly six hours a day during the preliminary period. Viewers need a 4K television, tuner and antenna. They also need to send an application to the operator to watch the channel. NexTV-F was set up in Japan in May last year to promote 4K broadcasting. It has over 60 corporate members consisting mainly of TV stations, electronics makers, ad agencies and trading houses. The Japanese government is aiming to begin the commercial service for 4K broadcasting in 2016.
