Andy Wang, a young office employee working in Shanghai, recently booked flights from Shanghai to South Korea's Jeju island for the upcoming Spring Festival holiday. The round-trip airfare cost him a little over 2,000 yuan ($274), half the price for round-trip flights from Shanghai to popular domestic destinations such as Harbin in Northeast China's Heilongjiang province. Going on a trip to celebrate the holiday, which starts in late January, has become a new trend among Chinese consumers, and many like Wang have found that some overseas destinations offer better value for money compared with domestic ones. For example, it is cheaper to book flights to Bangkok, Thailand, than to Sanya, Hainan province, during the break. Spring Festival bookings for outbound flights and international hotels this year have already more than doubled compared with the same period last year, according to Qunar, a Beijing-based online travel agency. International airfares for the eight-day holiday have on average dropped 12 percent year-on-year, while airfares for some popular destinations such as Tokyo in Japan, Cairo in Egypt and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam have on average dropped 20 percent year-on-year, data from Qunar showed. 20%。For some niche destinations in countries such as India, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Argentina, hotel rates for the Spring Festival holiday have on average plummeted by over 40 percent year-on-year, the online travel agency found. Spring Festival is the most important traditional festival in China, and Chinese people tend to go home for family reunions or take short trips within the country. Therefore, major domestic destinations, especially those popular for winter tourism, witness a surge in prices during the holiday," said Cai Muzi, a researcher for Qunar. As most foreign countries neither have the tradition of celebrating Spring Festival, nor do they have public holiday during the time, the travel rush is relatively low, Cai said. With fewer number of tourists, the price fluctuations are not significant overseas, which makes outbound travel to some places cheaper than domestic tourism," she added.“由于国外游客数量减少,海外价格波动不大,会出现一些出境游比国内游更便宜的现象。” According to Qunar, Chinese users of the online platform have booked flights to more than 1,300 cities in 96 countries for the Spring Festival break. Some overseas destinations that have recorded higher growth in terms of flight booking volume include Siem Reap in Cambodia, Nagoya and Sapporo in Japan, Budapest in Hungary and Hanoi in Vietnam. Flight bookings to these places have more than tripled year-on-year, Qunar said. To cash in on this holiday travel trend, a number of domestic carriers have increased their capacities on multiple international routes. In mid-December, China Southern Airlines increased the frequency of its flight between Guangzhou, Guangdong province, and Phuket, Thailand, raising the number from seven round-trips per week to 14. The carrier has also increased the frequency of its flights connecting Guangzhou to Chiang Mai in Thailand and Sabah in Malaysia.12月中旬,中国南方航空将广东省广州市与泰国普吉岛之间的往返航线从每周7个增加至14个。 China Southern has announced that starting in January, it will resume its flights from Zhengzhou, Henan province, to Bangkok; from Shenyang, Liaoning province, to Bangkok; and from Changsha, Hunan province, to Singapore. A recent trend report by Singapore-based budget carrier Scoot said that Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand have become popular destinations for Chinese travelers, partly due to their visa-free entry policies and proximity to China, with many people buying tickets just one week in advance. plummetv.

China's New Plane Wins Could Signal More Competition for Airbus and Boeing

Episode Notes One of China's largest airlines, China Southern, is buying 100 domestically-built planes – the C919, produced by the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). The plane is considered an emerging competitor to Airbus' A320 and the Boeing 737. And Airlines Editor Gordon Smith examines if other airlines will look to buy these Chinese-built aircraft. Just last week, Air China signed a similar agreement with COMAC for 100 C919 jets. The bigger question is if international carriers will be tempted to buy.  Christian Scherer, the CEO of Airbus' commercial aircraft division, has said the C919 “isn't going to rock the boat.” However, one Boeing executive said the planemaker is factoring in competition from the C919 in its long-term forecast.  Next, TUI CEO Sebastian Ebel believes recent protests in the Canary Islands against mass tourism aren't about the industry itself. He says residents are angry about a shortage of housing, writes Travel Experiences Reporter Jesse Chase-Lubitz.  Protestors are calling on authorities to limit tourist arrivals to ease pressure on the environment, infrastructure and housing supply. Chase-Lubitz notes many Canary Islands residents argue that mass tourism is pricing them out of their homes.  However, Ebel said the unregulated online booking platforms are the reason housing prices have gone up — not tourism as a whole. Ebel blamed individual trips, which include people booking local apartments, for causing more housing to be offered as holiday accommodation.   Finally, columnist Colin Nagy argues the ideals of luxury hospitality have been distorted so much that guests are struggling to understand reality: Great properties don't get the attention they deserve, and others serve up superficial goods but fail to deliver. He looks at the problems and suggests ways to fix them.  Nagy cites the decline of travel media as one area of concern, noting he believes thoughtful, unbiased commentary on hotels is disappearing. He lists writers and publications worth reading. Nagy also writes that luxury offerings all look the same, and urges readers to support brands carving out unique spaces.   Producer/Presenter: Jose Marmolejos

The number of direct flights between China and the United States will be further increased next month as a result of positive steps made by both sides to promote an orderly recovery of international passenger travel. The US Department of Transportation said on Friday that Chinese airlines could make 35 roundtrip flights to the US a week, up from 24, starting Nov 9.The number will be equal to the number China will allow for US airlines. In total, Chinese and US carriers will be allowed to operate 70 weekly round-trip flights from Nov 9.Seven Chinese airlines will operate the flights: Air China, Beijing Capital, China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan, Sichuan and Xiamen airlines, according to an order amendment released by the US Department of Transportation on Friday.According to the amendment, the goal is to improve the environment for airline companies from China and the US to maintain "a competitive balance and fair and equal opportunity".The US will continue ongoing and productive dialogue with the Civil Aviation Administration of China to facilitate a gradual, broader reopening of the air service market between both countries, the document said. Also on Friday, Liang Nan, director of the transport department of the CAAC, said, "The administration will continue to encourage and support Chinese and foreign airlines to resume international passenger flights, improving the international route network and supporting people movements between China and foreign countries to ensure stable foreign trade and investment."The new winter and spring civil aviation season in China started on Sunday and will end on March 30. During the season, China's international flights are expected to return to 70 percent of the volume seen in 2019, Liang said. She said that 13,004 international flights involving 65 countries are planned every week during the season, but the number between China and the US has not yet been released.Due to the pandemic, international flights to and from China were greatly reduced. In March 2020, China introduced the "circuit breaker" policy — suspending flights operated by an airline for two weeks if five or more passengers tested positive for COVID-19 upon landing in China, or for four weeks if 10 or more passengers tested positive.Only a very small number of international passenger flights continued to operate during the pandemic. Data from the CAAC showed that in August 2021, the number of flights to and from China was about 2.15 percent of the volume recorded in 2019.The number of international flights has risen gradually since January, after China optimized its response measures to COVID-19 and promoted the resumption of cross-border air travel. From Oct 16 to 22, a total of 7,750 international passenger flights operated, about 51 percent of the volume before the pandemic. Those flights involved 61 countries, according to the administration.Although the international civil aviation market has recovered well, China-US air service is far from fully resumed. In 2019, more than 300 round trips were operated every week between China and the US, according to Lin Zhijie, a civil aviation industry analyst. After the increase next month, the number of China-US flights will be about 25 percent compared with the volume in 2019, he said. The volume of flights affects prices. According to Orbitz, a global travel planning website, the cheapest price ticket from Shanghai to San Francisco in November is about $620.The lowest ticket price for the end of this month is around $890, as of Sunday morning."Restricted by the number of flights, the ticket price between China and the US is still high, with about 10,000 yuan ($1,366) for a one-way ticket. The operation of more flights from 48 to 70 per week can help lower ticket prices," Lin said. There are two key factors in promoting the recovery of passenger travel between China and the US — an increase in the number of flights and visa issuances, according to Lin."It still takes quite long, about two to four months, to get a visa. As the number of flights has gradually recovered, the visa problem has become a bottleneck that needs to be solved," he said."At present, the resumption of flights between China and the US has released positive signals, and it can indeed alleviate the problem of insufficient flight capacity and high fares, but the recovery in the future is still uncertain," Lin said.Reporter: Luo Wangshu

英语新闻|疫情下的求变与创新:航空公司推出“行李到家”服务|Airlines bank on upgraded services to boost revenue Domestic airlines are taking the brunt of financial pressures caused by the latest resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic, and they have launched additional innovative services to stay afloat. Yet, analysts remain cautious about the extent to which the service can help carriers increase revenues. Hainan Airlines, China's fourth-largest carrier, launched a service in late March that helps passengers deliver their luggage home. The service is available at Beijing Capital International Airport and Haikou Meilan International Airport. By ordering the service online, passengers will be able to save the time of waiting for their checked luggage and they don't have to carry heavy suitcases by themselves. After passengers have checked their luggage at departing airports and within one hour after the flight lands, they can order the service through the app or by scanning the bar code at the airports, Hainan Airlines said. The company didn't disclose the specific number of people who have ordered the service so far. Ground service employees of the carrier will help passengers to get their luggage and logistics staff will deliver the luggage to designated destinations. Usually, it takes about four to six hours for the transportation after picking up the luggage, and passengers will be able to track the luggage status on their mobile phones, Hainan Airlines said. It costs at least 85 yuan ($13) to deliver one piece of luggage. For passengers who bought flight tickets for business class, they can get complimentary delivery service for one piece of luggage that is less than 30 kilograms. Urumqi Airlines To Adds 3 New Destinations From China To Nagoya, Japan

From December 30, Urumqi Airlines plans to open two new international routes from Urumqi to Nagoya, Japan. With the opening of Urumqi(URC) – Wuhan(WUH) – Nagoya(NGO) from the 30th of December, with flights scheduled on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; Urumqi(URC) – Jinan(JNA) – Nagoya(NGO) route will be opened on December 31 for every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. The route is the second and third international scheduled routes opened by Urumqi Airlines. The opening of this international route indicates that Urumqi Airlines will further accelerate the pace of international route network build-up, and is these route layout is significant for Urumqi Airlines to create a “connected Eurasian” network. In the past, citizens of Urumqi and surrounding areas traveling to and from central Japan required transit in cities such as Xi’an and Beijing, which took a lot of time. After the opening of the route, Xinjiang passengers only need 9 hours to reach central Japan, which greatly reduces the travel time and travel costs of passengers. In addition, the route connects the two secondary aviation hubs of Wuhan and Jinan in China, enriching the routes and time options for passengers from the two places and surrounding provinces and cities to Japan. At the same time, the opening of the route provides a more convenient air channel for economic and trade exchanges and cultural exchanges between these cities. The flights from Urumqi (URC) to Nagoya (NGO) via Wuhan (WUH) will operate with the following schedule starting on December 30, 2019: UQ2657 / URC – WUH / 7:05AM – 11:25AM (Mon, Wed & Fri) UQ2657 / WUH – NGO / 1:05PM – 5:15PM (Mon, Wed & Fri) UQ2658 / NGO – WUH / 6:45PM – 10:05PM (Mon, Wed & Fri) UQ2658 / WUH – URC / 11:55PM – 4:20AM (Fri, slightly different on Mon & Wed) The flights operating via Jinan (TNA) will operate from December 31, 2019, with the following schedule: UQ2659 / URC – TNA / 7:30AM – 12:00PM (Tue, Thu, Sat & Sun) UQ2659 / TNA – NGO / 1:30PM – 5:15PM (Tue, Thu, Sat & Sun) UQ2660 / NGO – TNA / 6:45PM – 9:15PM (Tue, Thu, Sat & Sun) UQ2660 / TNA – URC / 11:50PM – 4:30AM+1 (Tue, Thu, Sat & Sun) None of the flights between Urumqi and Nagoya will be non-stop and it would still be difficult to foster them in the future, as there are currently 10 other Chinese carriers serving flights to Nagoya from 23 cities in mainland China. As for the two routes Urumqi Air is serving from Wuhan and Jinan, both airports are already served by other Chinese carriers who are competing on the same route, with Shandong Airlines serving Jinan and Nagoya 3 times weekly and China Southern serving Wuhan – Nagoya with twice weekly as well. From 1st April earlier this year, Urumqi Airlines implemented service differentiation and customisation on its entire flight network which divided baggage allowance and meal policies into four different classes, with baggage allowance ranging from 10kg to 30kg and after the new implementation, meal service for flights within three hours will be cancelled, with more snack options being added for purchase.

Air China To Ground Beijing - Zurich Direct Flight From October

After only two years of restarting the route, Air China will suspend the direct flight from Beijing-Zurich from October 14, 2019. According to the Swiss travel news platform - "Travel News" reported, learned from the tourism partners that have business dealings with Air China, Beijing direct flights operated by Air China to and from Zurich(CA781/782) will be grounded from October 14. Maiden flight for Air China's 50th A330 The news triggered speculation by the Swiss media. Many Swiss business and tourism agencies are concerned that Chinese tourists may be reduced as a result. According to data from the Swiss Tourism Board, the number of Chinese tourists staying in Switzerland in 2000 was 234,000 and soared to about 1.73 million in 2018. Chinese tourists spend an average of 380 Swiss francs per day in Switzerland, which is also the highest among foreign tourists. The analysis believes that Air China's flight to and from Zurich will potentially lead to a shortage of passengers. In June 2017, after several years of grounding, Air China restarted the direct flight from Beijing to Zurich. The source speculates that Air China's reason for abandoning this direct route is related to the two air crashes of the Boeing 737MAX. In the situation of current fleet shortage, the relatively new route from Beijing to Zurich quickly became a victim. Air China is introducing a large number of Airbus A350 passenger aircraft. Perhaps in the next two to three years, this aircraft will be used on the direct route from Beijing to Zurich. Also included in Air China's winter season timetable, the Chengdu-Kunming-Yangon, Chengdu-Lhasa-Kathmandu and Hangzhou-Surat Thani routes will be discontinued as well (all starting October 27). Air China continues to believe in the potential of the German-speaking Swiss market. However, the focus is now on the Geneva flight which operates under a joint venture agreement with the Lufthansa Group. "Why did China Air China really suspended the Zurich route?" Although it make sense that Air China, like all other big carriers out there, it's facing aircraft shortage due to the global grounding of B737 MAX, however the Beijing - Zurich route is a long haul route that requires a wide-body aircraft. The route will operate til October with an Airbus A330 aircraft, out of the 59 A330s Air China currently operates, at least 22 of them are registered under operating leasing which is reaching its expiry date, Air China will have to retire them soon while finding replacement for them. First Air China A350-900 take off Although Air China has ordered 20 A350-900 aircraft from Airbus earlier this year, with the opening of Beijing's new daxing international airport, Air China will soon have new time slots opening up at PEK due to China Eastern and China Southern moving its operation to the new airport (PKX), in addition, Air China 'luckily' got 10 prosent slots share at the new airport as well. So the question really comes down to, why won't Air China order more wide-body aircrafts? The A350 series is unlikely to be delivered in the short term and is now scheduled to be at least from 2020. The B787 series can't be delivered too quickly either. It's an unfortunate coincidence that now they even got one A330 less relating to news happened a few days ago. On the 27th August, crew for Air China flight CA183 from Beijing to Tokyo found out that the cargo space in front of the aircraft was sending out smoke. the fire quickly spread after the plane caught fire. The upper part of the nose has been burned through and the structure of the aircraft may have been destroyed. Air China A330 B-5958 @ PEK The aircraft that caught fire in this warehouse was Air China A330-300 passenger aircraft with registration number B-5958, which was introduced in December 2014. According to its flight record, the aircraft operated a round-trip flight from Beijing to Singapore today and landed at Beijing at 15:00. According to Air China's r...

When is a $2 billion annual profit disappointing? Answer: When you’re a giant airline group like Lufthansa, and $2 billion amounts to a mere 5% operating margin—and that lackluster result comes despite fuel costs dropping 16% year over year. But there are a few signs of hope. Meanwhile, American Airlines is purchasing a $200-million stake in China Southern. Frontier Airlines and Silver Airways are ending their short-lived Cuba service. And LATAM, still recovering from Brazil’s economic and currency collapse, is fighting two other battles—a cargo malaise and increased competition. Nonetheless, South America’s largest airline did enjoy improved annual profits year over year.

This is Special English. I am Sam Duckett in Beijing. Here is the news. China is open to space cooperation with all nations including the United States. The heavyweight of China's space program, China's first astronaut Yang Liwei, made the remark recently on the occasion of the anniversary of China's first satellite launch 46 years ago. Yang said China does not rule out cooperating with any country, including the United States. The senior astronaut said payload has been reserved in the Chinese space station for international projects and foreign astronauts. The space station is due to enter service around 2022. China marked its first Space Day, which was newly designated by the government to commemorate China's first satellite launch on April 24, 1970. Upon request, China will also train astronauts for other countries, and jointly train astronauts with the European space station. Yang said the future of space exploration lies in international cooperation, and it's true for China as well as for the United States. Citing security reasons, the United States Congress passed a law in 2011 to prohibit NASA from hosting Chinese visitors at its facilities or working with researchers affiliated to any Chinese government entity or enterprise. The ban remains in effect. The US-dominated International Space Station, which unsurprisingly blocks China, is scheduled to end its service in 2024. China's space station will be the only operational one in outer space, at least for a while. This is Special English. Five domestic airlines have agreed to tackle air rage by blacklisting passengers who misbehave. The five airlines, including Air China and China Southern, are the country&`&s major carriers. They will collectively keep records of those who are not behaved. Improper behaviors include attacking on check-in counters, forcibly occupying airplanes and fighting on board an airplane. Passenger records will be shared throughout the country's civil aviation and tourism industries. Those who are blacklisted will face penalties including being denied special seats, ticket discounts, or even service. However, an official from the Civil Aviation University of China said airlines do not have the right to limit passengers&`& travel rights. The official said that although air passenger blacklists have been adopted overseas, there is no legal provision for them in China, adding that this may lead to disputes. Others say that the provisions for the blacklist should be decided by a third party rather than just the airlines. It is the first time that a blacklist has covered most of the domestic civil aviation industry. The five airlines and their subsidiaries handle more than 80 percent of China&`&s air traffic. The decision comes after the China Air Transport Association adopted a new management policy to record uncivilized behavior by air passengers. You are listening to Special English. I am Sam Duckett in Beijing. The authorities are trying to restore public confidence in vaccines after a nationwide scandal struck fear into the hearts of parents. China banned drug wholesalers from selling vaccines, according to a decision publicized on the nation&`&s Vaccination Day, which fell on April 25th. The decision requires B-class, or non-compulsory, vaccines to be distributed in the same way as A-class, which are covered by the national compulsory immunization program. It also requires disease control departments, hospitals and clinics to keep records of purchases and received inventory. According to the decision, China will establish a system to track vaccines. Enterprises and user agencies must record circulation and use, so all vaccines can be tracked across their life cycle. The public were shocked and appalled in March when the news that improperly stored vaccines worth millions of dollars were sold nationwide. More than 300 officials implicated in cases concerning the event will be penalized. In the eastern city of Ningbo, the number of vaccinated children decreased by around one fourth from March 18 to 31. Local authorities are trying to quell public unease. This is Special English. Individuals and organizations that conduct medically inessential prenatal sex discernment or sex-selective abortions will be fined up to 30,000 yuan, roughly 4,600 U.S. dollars. Under a revised regulation taking effect recently, besides a fine, the government will confiscate the income from such screenings and abortions, which are illegal in China. Those who introduce expectant parents to take up illegal prenatal sex discernment and selective abortion will also face the same punishment. The regulation has been jointly issued by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce and the China Food and Drug Administration. The revision to the law aims to tackle China&`&s high gender imbalance, a direct result of pre-birth sex discernment and sex-selective abortions driven by cultural preference for boys. The birth sex ratio stood at almost 114 in 2015, much higher than a normal ratio between 103 and 107, though it has decreased from 121 in 2004. In China, legitimate reasons for a hospital conducting a sex-selective abortion include serious genetic disease or deadly threat to the mother's health. It requires at least three senior doctors with a genetics background and clinical experience to decide whether prenatal sex discernment is necessary. If an abortion is necessary, the hospital must report the case to the local health department. You are listening to Special English. I&`&m Sam Duckett in Beijing. The State Council has published its major health care reform tasks for the year, with a general practitioner pilot program, and reduced reliance on drug revenue for health centers. This year, 200 cities will trial GP practices, making the service available to 15 percent of urban citizens and 30 percent of key groups. According to the statement from the State Council, China's Cabinet, GPs will open their practices to residents, providing them with basic, consistent medical services. The plan is part of a tiered health system being rolled out across the country. To improve local-level medical institutions, the government will allow physicians in public hospitals to practice or establish their own practices. Another health reform task this year will be the establishment of a pricing mechanism for medicine to reduce the cost born by patients. Patients will be given the choice of buying drugs from hospitals or retail pharmacies. The public hospital reform will be further advanced, as 100 more cities will carry out pilot public hospital reform this year. According to the pilot reform, revenues of public hospitals will not rely on drugs but medical service charges. This is Special English. Chinese scientists are working on new projects inspired by the documented case of a man who was cured of AIDS. They hope eventually find a way to ensure that humans are born with immunity to the condition. Nine years ago, a 41-year-old man, who has since been dubbed the "Berlin patient", was close to death and in the advanced stages of both AIDS and leukemia. Doctors gave him a stem cell transplant from an HIV-resistant donor, and miraculously cured both conditions. The event made him arguably the first person ever to be cured of AIDS. The remarkable case shed light on CCR5, a receptor in humans that helps HIV enter cells. The bone-marrow transplant had changed the Berlin patient&`&s gene to a mutation called CCR5-delta32, which blocks HIV. With new gene technology now available, Chinese scientists have recently moved forward with attempts to modify the CCR5 gene in embryos, advancing their drive to ensure humans are born already immune to HIV. In the latest case, researchers from the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University used a gene editing technique to attempt to replace the CCR5 gene in 26 human embryos. The researchers tried to give the embryos the HIV-resistant mutation. Four embryos were successfully edited, while the other 22 cases failed to produce the desired results. Is China's slowing economy taking its toll on the country's Big Three carriers? So far Air China, China Eastern and China Southern have held up well and posted a rather good 2015. But the fourth quarter of 2015 showed some signs of deterioration—even by the standards of this off-peak quarter. In the U.S., Alaska Airlines and Virgin America are, unlike a lot of mergers in the past, merging from a position of strength. But is that a good thing? Delta's upcoming first quarter earnings report will surely be terrific and begs the question: Does the U.S. airline industry have an off-peak quarter anymore? This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Here is the news. China has reshuffled its top armed forces agency, the Central Military Commission, as President Xi Jinping accelerates the massive, multilevel reform of the Chinese military. The previous four military headquarters, namely, staff, politics, logistics and armaments, were dismantled and their functions and duties are now shared by 15 new agencies under the Central Military Commission. Xi is also chairman of the Central Military Commission. When meeting leaders of the new agencies, Xi said the rearrangement of the commission itself has basically concluded. He describes the move as "a breakthrough" and "a crucial step" towards a stronger military. He adds that military leaders need to sharpen their political alertness and become better at discerning right and wrong in political matters. President Xi has urged the new organs to focus on improving the army's combat capability and readiness so it can win modern warfare. Commanders have been asked to spend more time studying and researching important military issues. This is NEWS Plus Special English. China's Internet regulator has asked Internet users to support the judicial organ during a live open trial of a video service firm suspected of spreading pornography. The Cyberspace Administration of China says all Internet-based service providers must bear legal responsibility for their content, which is a fundamental principle of the development of China's Internet. The administration says it firmly supports the legal investigation of Qvod's case involving pornography. It hopes that Internet users stick to the bottom line in making opinions online and support the judicial organs handling of the case. The move came as four executives of Qvod stood trail in Beijing earlier this month. They have been charged with spreading pornography for profit. The trial was broadcast live online. Wang Xin, CEO of Qvod, claims that the company itself is not responsible for spreading information. He blames the pornographic content on third parties. According to the prosecution, 21,000 of the 30,000 files police obtained from the servers of Qvod contained pornography content. The court did not announce verdicts at the trial. Founded in 2007, Qvod offered videos through peer-to-peer video streaming technology, and its user base quickly grew to 300 million. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. The skies between China and the United States are getting busier. Last year, 75 weekly nonstop flights were added between the two countries, up more than 30 percent from 2014. More are on the way. Six of the eight airlines that provide direct US-China services opened new routes last year, adding to their fast-growing schedules. Some even expanded service to China's second-tier cities. During the past peak season, there were 320 weekly flights. The four largest Chinese airlines, namely, Air China, China Eastern, China Southern and Hainan Airlines, expanded in the U.S. market significantly last year. China's flagship carrier Air China leads the "Big Four" with 55 weekly flights from Beijing to seven U.S. cities, including a new route from Beijing to Newark in New Jersey, in October. The airline company also increased the frequency of the Beijing-Los Angeles route to 21 flights a week. Hainan Airlines opened three new routes, namely, Shanghai to Boston, Shanghai to Seattle, and Beijing to San Jose in California, becoming the first airline to fly nonstop from China to the heart of Silicon Valley.
