A shortage of rescue and fire fighting services at Ōhakea Airbase is jeopardising international flights. Emirates which flies to Auckland and Christchurch, must designate an alternative airport in case of an emergency. That airport is Ohakea miltary base. However, firefighting services there have been downgraded, due to a shortage of specialist firefighters and limited training options in New Zealand. That means Ohakea can't operated 24/7 as an alternative airfield for planes the size Emirates is using; A380s carrying up to 480 passengers. So it's having to nominate other airports further away and Emirates says that's compromising the economic viability of the routes Cath O'Brien, the executive director of the Board of Airline Representatives speaks to Lisa Owen.
This audio is brought to you by Endress and Hauser, a leading supplier of products, solutions and services for industrial process measurement and automation. Cape Town's proposed second big commercial airport, the Cape Winelands Airport (CWA), should receive its first passengers in 2027, says RSA.Aero MD Nick Ferguson. RSA.Aero is the project developer, with the first phase expected to cost between R5-billion and R7-billion. Phase 1 will include a 3.5 km runway, taxiways, the terminal building and road infrastructure. The airport will be located in Durbanville, on the northern outskirts of Cape Town. CWA's customers are expected to come from Cape Town, as well as the nearby Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington and the West Coast. CWA will be partially built on the site of the current 155 ha Fisantekraal Airport, a private airport handling mainly general aviation. This facility was built in 1943 by the Allied Forces to protect the South African coastline during World War Two. The new development will see the site expand to 450 ha in Phase 1, in a northerly direction, and, ultimately, potentially, to the full 884 ha owned by RSA.Aero. "We'll expand incrementally and in line with demand," Ferguson tells Engineering News Online. "But the aim is to add hotels, cargo facilities, aeroplane maintenance sites, a conference centre and much more." "People always ask if CWA will be like the privately owned Lanseria, in Johannesburg," he adds. "The answer is yes, but it will be bigger, with a longer runway that can accommodate wide-body aeroplanes - which means it will be able to handle more international traffic, from more destinations, compared with Lanseria." RSA.Aero has already started the environmental impact assessment on the project. Ferguson aims to have this finished by early next year, with construction to start once the project has been given the green light. Construction will take approximately two years, with the first scheduled traffic set to land in 2027. Ferguson is upbeat about the airport's potential, as Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) cannot currently accommodate A380s - the world largest commercial passenger aircraft and the largest contingent in the Emirates fleet, for example. Also: "Johannesburg is mainly a transit hub for most tourists. They land there and immediately fly on to other destinations. If Cape Town is their final destination, then why not fly there directly?" CTIA is owned and operated by State-owned Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). Does this not place the privately owned CWA in direct competition with CTIA? Yes, admits Ferguson, but all major world-class cities have more than one airport. "Look at London, New York and Sydney - even our neighbour Windhoek has two airports." While the current Fisantekraal site is licensed as an airport, this licence will have to be expanded for the airport to handle bigger aircraft and more traffic. It also has to be classified as a designated airport, which will allow it to handle scheduled traffic. This process is mainly centred around airport security. "This means that if we achieve the desired milestones, we'll get this licence," says Ferguson. The more challenging matter will be an application to the national Department of Transport (DoT) for the site be licensed as an international airport. "This immediately means that the Border Management Authority becomes involved, and if you do not have buy-in here, you'll struggle to clear this hurdle," says Ferguson. "But, we believe we can show national government the immense value of building the Winelands airport, especially to international carriers and the environment. "We already have the written support of the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape government." Ferguson says RSA.Aero is in the process of handing in its international licence application to the DoT. Heavy Hitters RSA.Aero is certainly not short on experience and knowledge to succeed in its licence application, as it has some heavy hitters on it...

Lufthansa mothballed its A380s two years ago due to the pandemic. But now the airline is reactivating the superjumbos, due to an unexpectedly rapid rise in demand and resulting uncovered capacities.
It's a longer than usual podcast this week so strap yourselves in. Firstly we look at the Owners Corporation Network's (OCN) 10-point manifesto which they have announced leading up to next year's NSW state election. It's part wish-list and part statement of intent and you can read it in detail here. What we discuss is why those demands are there and what it might mean if they are taken up by the next state government (whoever that might be). Then we dive into the foaming waters of Bondi Beach where, according to a story in the Sydney Morning Herald, locals are concerned that it's losing its egalitarian charm and in danger of becoming another Yuppified concrete and glass suburb. Meanwhile in another yarn, the local Waverley council has, somewhat typically, said that developers should consider the spiritual, cultural and historical and climate aspects of the neighbourhood before they start throwing up (pun intended) cheap and cheerless unit blocks. Developers, in the form of the Urban Taskforce, have equally predictably said life is hard enough without adding more obstacles to their business. Here at the Flat Chat Wrap have a solution which only requires some compromise and lateral thinking – so it is pretty much guaranteed never to get off the ground. In any case, don't say it out loud, but the biggest threat to Bondi is Airbnb and it's ilk. Just wait till those A380s are back in the air again and the area once again has more baristas than barristers, and you'll know all about it. And finally, we have built an extension to the podcast, in the form of the third and last part of David Bannerman's Lawyer in the Hotseat webinar. That all adds up to an hour of chat, so pace yourselves. But remember the football World Cup is only a week away so some time management may be required. Before you go, in the next week or so we will be experimenting with ads at the beginning and end of each podcast (but not in the middle). The podcast takes up a lot of time to record, edit and transcribe so if we can get a little financial assistance with that, it would be great. However, if you hate the ads and they make you want to turn off the pod, please let us know and we can decide if it's worth the hassle. If you enjoyed listening to this podcast (or reading the transcript), please share it with your friends using the social media buttons on this page. TRANSCRIPT IN FULL NB: This is a combination of two transcripts so the timings for the latter section - Part 3 of the Lawyer in the Hotseat webinar - will be off in terms of the audio. If you want to locate a specific section of audio, take about 25 minutes off the listed timing in that section and you'll be close to the mark. Jimmy 00:00 I was on a panel at the SCA New South Wales owners day. Sue 00:06 Oh, that's the strata Community Association. Jimmy 00:07 Yeah Sue 00:08 Which is the strata managers thing. Jimmy 00:10 Yep. And it's our first time in ages have been at one of their events and, and certainly the first time I've participated in an owner's section, because for a while they were making fairly aggressive efforts to recruit people who should have been joining OCN. And in fact they were publicising themselves as being the voice of owners in strata, Sue 00:38 okay. And that's kind of a bit hard, isn't it? Because they're actually the voice of strata manager? So it's okay for them to have an owner's chapter, isn't it. Jimmy 00:48 Advising owners and stuff and education and stuff like that? But as I, as I said, many, many, many times, if you're in a dispute between a strata manager and an owner, and you go to the strata managers organisation, who are they going to support? And if you're a strata manager, it's part of that organisation, and they support the strata owner, you're going to be a bit miffed. Sue 01:10 For sure. Jimmy 01:12 So anyway, I went to this thing,

After two months in a COVID slumber, Qantas finally poked its head up to reveal its full-year financial results. And while the loss was predictable, far more interesting was its ambitious plan to get flying again this year, and bring its A380s back earlier than expected. In this episode, Adam Thorn and Hannah Dowling discuss the politics behind the story, and which of its A380s will be the first to leave the desert to return. Plus, why has Qatar's Hamad airport been named the best in world despite the invasive search of Australian women returning home last year?
Join Carlos, Nev and A320 Andy for this week's programme. In this week's show, there's a bit of unstable approach into Paro (to put it mildly!), Qatar are grounding some more of their A350s for inspection and EasyJet are feeling more confident about the passenger loads that they are expecting this year. In the military the RAF concludes 30 years of service with its Boeing E-3 Sentry, the RAAF codifies a new role for its C-27 Spartans after the recent Australian wildfires, and the UK Tempest Fighter program moves on to its next phase. We also take a look at Carlos and Nev's trip to the Old Buckenham Airshow last week. This week, Malaysia Airlines posted a LinkedIn advertisement to sell off its six remaining A380s for scraps, while Airbus strengthened its foothold in the narrow-body market. In this episode of the World of Aviation Podcast, host Adam Thorn and reporter Hannah Dowling take you through the data of Airbus' new ‘monopoly' over narrow-bodied jets, how it managed the feat, and what this means for the industry moving forward. Plus, the crew discusses Malaysia Airlines' latest attempt to bring in extra cash through offloading its six remaining Airbus A380s - via LinkedIn. Also, the team reveals the latest update in the Transair Boeing 737-200 freighter that was ditched in the ocean earlier this month, and the possible safety concerns that underpinned the incident.
Qantas's fleet of A380s parked in California's desert are proving popular with local wildlife, with “snakes on a plane” very much a reality for the engineers tasked with maintaining them. Regional councils and tourism bodies are calling for the Queen's Birthday public holiday to be moved if Melburnians remain in Covid lockdown next weekend. Pharmacists are being forced to turn away people showing up for the coronavirus vaccine as they cry out to join the rollout in Victoria. And in sport, Vanessa Sierra has posted a video of Bernard Tomic breaking her laptop and “ruining her livelihood” in the latest development on their tumultuous relationship. Arabesque Partners chairman Georg Kell speaks to Kelsey Warner this week on the future of responsible investing, including the role of artificial intelligence to drive decisions. As the founding director of the United Nations Global Compact, Mr Kell was a pioneer in defining and assessing environmental, social and governance factors that can drive corporate strategy and investment decisions to improve the state of the world. Since September 2016, Mr Kell has also chaired the Volkswagen Sustainability Council, an independent body that advises VW on issues of social responsibility and the future of mobility. The group was formed following the high-profile diesel emissions scandal. He jumped at the chance to serve on the council, and explains why coming out of the shadow of controversy, VW is now at a competitive advantage five years later. #68 - The Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG does not expect the aviation industry to return to pre-coronavirus crisis levels very quickly. According to its assessment, it will take months until the global travel restrictions are completely lifted and years until the worldwide demand for air travel returns to pre-crisis levels. Based on this evaluation, today the Executive Board has decided on extensive measures to reduce the capacity of flight operations and administration long term. Significant decline in air travel also expected for period after the Coronavirus crisisSuspension of aircraft leads to the first permanent capacity reductionThe inevitable downsizing of flight operations shall be implemented in a socially responsible manner, among other things, through collective employment modelsAt Lufthansa, six Airbus A380s and seven A340-600s as well as five Boeing 747-400s will be permanently decommissioned. In addition, eleven Airbus A320s will be withdrawn from short-haul operations. The six A380s were already scheduled for sale to Airbus in 2022. The decision to phase out seven A340-600s and five Boeing 747-400s was taken based on the environmental as well as economic disadvantages of these aircraft types. With this decision, Lufthansa will be reducing capacity at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich.Write us anytime on WhatsApp and we are happy to answer your questions.Subscribe to our podcast. Qantas and Jetstar are suspending international flights from the end of the month. The move has been triggered by the public health response to the coronavirus crisis although there would be some ''ad hoc'' services possible. The Qantas group is also standing down two-thirds of its 30,000 strong workforce. The will be a 60 per cent reduction to domestic flights in Australia and Jetstar will cut services in New Zealand to a third of what they are now.Earlier this week, cuts to 90 per cent of international flying and about 60 per cent of domestic flying were announced by Qantas and Jetstar. With the Federal Government now recommending against all overseas travel from Australia, regularly scheduled international flights will continue until late March to assist with repatriation and will then be suspended until at least the end of May 2020.Qantas is in ongoing discussions with the Federal Government about continuation of some strategic links.More than 150 aircraft will be temporarily grounded, including all of Qantas' A380s, 747s and B787-9s and Jetstar's B787-8s. Discussions are progressing with airports and government about parking for these aircraft.Essential domestic, regional and freight connections will be maintained as much as possible.Jetstar Auckland-Christchurch flights will fall to 14 return services per week, down from 42 and Wellington-Christchurch to 14 return services per week, down from 42.Qantas Group chief executive Alan Joyce said the efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus have led to a huge drop in travel demand.''This is having a devastating impact on all airlines,'' he said."We're in a strong financial position right now, but our wages bill is more than $4 billion a year. With the huge drop in revenue we're facing, we have to make difficult decisions to guarantee the future of the national carrier. With 150 aircraft on the ground there was no work for most of the staff.''Rather than lose these highly skilled employees who we'll need when this crisis passes, we are instead standing down two-thirds of our 30,000 employees until at least the end of May."Most staff would be using various types of paid leave during this time."This is a very hard set of circumstances for our people, as it is for lots of parts of the community right now.''
