A member of the Democratic Party, he served from 1963 to 1967 in the Georgia State Senate and from 1971 to 1975 as the 76th governor of Georgia. Carter was the longest-lived president in U. S. history and the first to live to 100 years of age.Born and raised in Plains, Georgia, Carter graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1946 and joined the U. S. Navy's submarine service. He returned home after his military service and revived his family's peanut-growing business. Opposing racial segregation, Carter supported the growing civil rights movement, and became an activist within the Democratic Party. He served in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967 and then as Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. As a dark-horse candidate not well known outside Georgia, Carter won the Democratic nomination and narrowly defeated the incumbent president, Gerald Ford of the Republican Party, in the 1976 presidential election.Carter pardoned all Vietnam War draft evaders on his second day in office. He created a national energy policy that included conservation, price control, and new technology. Carter successfully pursued the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, and the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. He also confronted stagflation. His administration established the U. S. Department of Energy and the Department of Education. He was the only president to serve a full term without appointing a justice to the Supreme Court. The end of his presidency was marked by the Iran hostage crisis, an energy crisis, the Three Mile Island accident, the Nicaraguan Revolution, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In response to the invasion, Carter escalated the Cold War by ending détente, imposing a grain embargo against the Soviets, enunciating the Carter Doctrine, and leading the multinational boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Carter defeated challenger Ted Kennedy in the 1980 Democratic Party presidential primaries but lost the general election in a landslide to Ronald Reagan, the Republican nominee. After leaving the presidency, Carter established the Carter Center to promote and expand human rights; in 2002, he received a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in relation to it. He traveled extensively to conduct peace negotiations, monitor elections, and further the eradication of infectious diseases. Carter was a key figure in the nonprofit housing organization Habitat for Humanity. He has also written numerous books, ranging from political memoirs to poetry, while continuing to comment on global affairs, including two books on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Polls of historians and political scientists generally rank Carter as a below-average president. Scholars and the public more favorably view his post-presidency, which was the longest in U. S. history. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 07:17 UTC on Monday, 30 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Jimmy Carter on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Amy.

Jonathan Alter, journalist and author of “His Very Best: Jimmy Carter, A Life,” talks with Stewart McLaurin, president of the White House Historical Association, about the remarkable journey of President Jimmy Carter from peanut farmer to Nobel Peace Prize recipient. Filmed at the First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, D.C., the church home of the Carters while they lived in the White House, Stewart and Jonathan met with Rev. Julie Pennington-Russell, who showed them rare memorabilia, including the Carter family's original membership cards, where Amy received baptism, and where the President taught adult Sunday school more than a dozen times during his presidency. Born in Plains, Georgia on October 1, 1924, President Carter grew up without running water or electricity. Eager to leave home, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy, married, and served in the U.S. Navy. He and his young wife and kids returned to Plains to help save the family farm after his father passed away. From there, he took an interest in politics, working his way up from county boards to the Georgia State Senate to the Governor's Mansion. Then he and Mrs. Carter launched into national politics, winning the 1976 election and moving to Washington, D.C. with their youngest child and only daughter, Amy. Known for a life of faith and service, the 39th President of the United States became the longest-lived president and half of the longest-married presidential couple in U.S. history. Stewart and Jonathan talk about the Carters' time in the White House and the decades-long post-presidency they spent creating The Carter Center, which works to alleviate human suffering around the world, and among many other things, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, and raising awareness about mental health and caregiving. The Official 2024 White House Christmas Ornament features a unique design inspired by the life and presidency of Jimmy Carter. You can purchase an ornament at this link.

The suspect, described as a Black female with dark hair, was captured on Walmart surveillance cameras using the victims' cards. The incident was initially thought to involve staff members, but investigators discovered that the suspect, not employed by Celebration Village, entered the facility wearing scrubs similar to those worn by staff. The 30-year, 1% sales tax proposal will fund public transit projects, increasing Cobb's sales tax from 6% to 7%. The tax aims to generate $11 billion over three decades for 108 miles of rapid bus routes, transit centers, and on-demand "microtransit" service. While the county can conduct an education campaign, advocating for or against the referendum is prohibited. Kimley-Horn will assist with the outreach effort, addressing initial concerns raised by some commissioners. Two Republicans opposed the campaign, criticizing the tax proposal. STORY 5: Former Cobb DA Holmes Sworn in as Board of Pardons and Paroles Member Joyette Holmes, former Cobb District Attorney, has been sworn in as a member of the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles. SEASON 2 EPISODE 26: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: In an April deposition in the New York Civil Fraud case, Trump told the Attorney General's office that he wasn't running his company because he was too busy saving the world from nuclear holocaust and saving millions of lives because he was the only one to think of DEALING with North Korea. You're WELCOME LOSERS. This underscores a part of Trump's insanity that it sometimes seems like we have gotten used to: he really DOES think he's the first person to ever think of something, or to DO something, that everybody else in his position did as long ago as 1946. I never hear him say something like this – “Only I saved millions of lives because only I dealt with North Korea” without thinking of what the idiot director Roger DeBris in Mel Brooks' movie “The Producers” says about the play itself – quote – “I never knew that the ‘THIRD REICH' meant Germany! I mean it's just DRENCHED with historical goodies like that.” That's Trump. Still, Trump didn't save Peter Navarro, who goes to trial – but only after failing to grab a paper “TRUMP LOST” sign held an inch over his head. And he didn't save Rudy Giuliani, who goes to trial for slandering Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman and hours later went on radio and slandered Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman AGAIN. And he didn't save Kevin McCarthy who will now have to start an impeachment without holding a vote – which he once violently criticized – or hold the vote and LOSE IT. The knives are out for Fani Willis. The Georgia State Senate Majority Leader now threatens her with reprimands, sanctions, hearings, defunding and removal. His name is Gooch and he's from Lumpkin County. But the Georgia State HOUSE Speaker, Jon Burns, another Republican, says trying to defund Willis violates separation of powers. With no hyperbole: I worry for Speaker Burns' safety. And the podcast celebrates a big milestone with a big thank you to you: the August audience was 3,000,000! B-Block (21:44) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: McConnell freezes again. Nice of his staffers to leave him out there and ask reporters to yell at him. And the brewing story about how if Mitch goes, the Democratic Kentucky governor may defy a new law and appoint a Democrat in his place. Plus the Proud Boys sentencings that weren't. (25:18) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Anti-pickleball millionaire Holly Peterson has an unexpected feature in her home: her own pickleball court. The guy who claimed he killed Bin Laden got arrested and replied by claiming he killed bin Laden. And why even in these days of loose ethics in cable news, MSNBC must fire primetime anchor Stephanie Ruhle. C-Block (32:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Poor puppy Thomas: attacked, left to die on the train tracks, and still wagging as humans treat him. (33:20) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's the 26th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana, which was also the day cable news jumped the shark and the shark was in the Rubicon.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

https://juryfile.com/2022/08/05/georgia-2/ The interim director of the Georgia State Senate, Alexander Azarian, 52, is accused of exploiting minor children through private messages since 2007. Azarian has been charged with two felony counts of child pornography. Azarian admitted to owning the email address that was associated with the criminal exploitation of minors before requested to speak to legal counsel. Yahoo provided The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children with the information the email address was sending and receiving child sexual abuse material. On July 28, 2022, a search of Azarian's residence provided evidence of child sexual abuse material on Azarian's phone. The evidence showed that Azarian received images of children performing sexual activity and he also shared those images with another individual. Recent news articles referenced Azarian as “A man who works with lawmakers in the Georgia State Senate,” or “Former interim director of the Georgia State Senate.” However, that portrays a different image of Azarian's employment status at the time of his arrest. Just last week, the Georgia State Senate was informed of Azarian's arrest and a new interim director was named. This wording is often used when police officers and public officials are arrested, the suspect is often referred to as a “former” employee or official. Azarian has worked for the Georgia State Senate since 1999. Azarian has since been released from jail on a $70,000 bond. Rush said “poll watchers are required by law to be there”.. wrong.. there’s no requirement there but someone from the State has to be there.. and there was. Rush then claimed state legislators in Georgia would have to be appointed to vote for Trump if (yes, another) recount wasn’t done but a State Senator from Georgia had this to say..
