In the early morning hours of 1st June 2009, Air France flight 447 was cruising at 35,000 feet, enroute from Rio de Janeiro Galeao to Paris Charles de Gaulle when the autopilot disengaged. Less than four and half minutes later, the Airbus A330 would plunge into the Atlantic Ocean with the tragic loss of the 228 souls on board. It would take two years for the flight data and cockpit voice recorders to be found and a further year for the French BEA to release the findings of their accident investigation. What they would uncover were lessons about human interaction with automated systems that are pertinent not just for pilots but for us all.

Welcome to your weekly UAS news update we have 3 stories for you, Man sacrifices drone to save lost people, Autel Evo Lite Enterprise, and Drones inspect KLM Aircraft. First up, 7 people were rescued after their boat started sinking in Utah Lake. Police were notified of a sinking boat, but were unable to locate them. While staging rescue crews at the marina, a local man flying his drone for fun overheard and offered to help. Stephan Ceciu was flying for fun initially, but assisted in the search, locating the sinking boat and sending their location to officials. The 7 people were successfully rescued and the boat was towed back to the marina. It's unclear how far the drone was flown away from the operator or what kind of drone it was. However, did not have enough battery to return to home and landed in the lake. Great job Stephan and we're sorry about your drone! Next up, Autel has released the Evo Lite Enterprise Series! The new series weigh 866g, and include thermal and visual payload options. The Lite Enterprise has a 40 minute flight time, 4K video, and 12km range. The Lite Thermal has a 640x512 resolution thermal camera, 16X digital zoom, and a temperature range of 0C to 550C. So far, no pricing has been released but we'll keep you posted when if we see more! Last up, a new partnership between Dutch Drone Delta and KLM will use drones to inspect KLM's aircraft. The new program will use DJI Matrice aircraft with AI enabled software to perform inspections and report damage to the pilots or other users. Images of the operation appear to show a Matrice 300 or 350 with a P1, LiDAR, and other payloads inspecting an Airbus A330. This is a pretty cool use for drones that will benefit air carriers by reducing downtime for inspections!
If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“I want to talk about quotas for diversity in companies and why they don't work in all industries.”My guest today has over 30 years of experience in the Aviation industry, a former international airline pilot who flew the Airbus A330 and A340 worldwide. They are the author of The Complete Airline Pilot Interview Workbook and have experience as a Flight Instructor, Aviation lecturer, expert witness and mentor. They are also the founding partner of the Flightdeck Group, a group of aviation companies specialising in helping people achieve career success through career pathway awareness, interview preparation, career coaching and industry networking. You'd be forgiven to think my guest is male - because that's society's expectations - still today. And it's exactly why I've got my dear friend Sasha Robinson on the show today. She's an aviation legend in an industry that still today has less than 5% of women at the top - something I was interested in diving deeper into with her. Sash is passionate about her industry and not only has a stellar career, but she is also the mother of five kids!Raising five children, including three girls, Sasha has a passion for advancing careers of women in the field of Aviation. A recent career highlight was being involved in the Federal Government's Women in Aviation Initiative, creating an aviation awareness campaign for school and university-aged girls, highlighting incredible career opportunities in the Aviation and Aerospace industries. Sasha's hard work was recognised at the Australian Aviation Awards recently as the winner of the 2023 Female Aviation Leader of the Year.

For the 13th anniversary of this tragic event, we'll be visiting the mystery of Air France 447. On June 1, 2009, one of the safest planes in the sky went missing over the ocean with over 200 people on board. Soon, they were all presumed dead. In the months following the crash, very little was found of the ill-fated Airbus A330. However, investigators never stopped searching for the wreckage that lay on the ocean floor. And years after the fact, they made a discovery 13,000 feet beneath the surface that would shock the world. Tune into this episode as Caroline and Monika explore one of the most darkly fascinating flights of all time, and also theorize what it would be like to be attacked by the Kraken at 36,000 feet.
A Virgin Atlantic aircraft was forced to return to London's Heathrow airport less than an hour into a flight to New York, after one of its pilots was found to not have completed their training. According to the airline, the Airbus A330 jet was around 40 minutes into its journey to the United States on Monday when the two pilots on board became aware of the “rostering error.” Oops. Waiting in the wings since April 2019 -- when it was grounded due to a financial crisis -- Jet Airways has been looking to hit the skies for long now. The new owners, British firm Kalrock Capital and UAE-based entrepreneur Murari Lal Jalan, have time and again asserted that Jet Airways 2.0 will take off in the beginning of this year. But will everything go as planned? The company has recently seen a slew of resignations. This week, Sudhir Gaur, its accountable manager and acting chief executive de-boarded the company. Gaur was heading the operations team and was involved in key negotiations for airport slots. The airline's finance head and head of management information systems had quit two weeks ago. We reached out to Jet Airways for their stance on the recent developments, but didn't receive a response by the time of publishing of this video. While Gaur's replacement has been found in head of training and standards in Nepal Airlines, PP Singh, there are several other tasks to complete before Jet Airways 2.0 can take off. The Kalrock-Jalan consortium is yet to finalise its fleet plans. Jet Airways 2.0 is understood to have a fleet of 11 aircraft, including Boeing 777, 737 and Airbus A330, on its books now. The two company owners had said that the airline would commence domestic operations with six narrow body aircrafts in 2022. And also that the airline plans to have a fleet of 100-plus aircraft. Meanwhile, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-backed Akasa Air has already ordered 72 Boeing 737 Max aircrafts. The consortium had even approached the National Company Law Tribunal or NCLT, asking it to declare December 22, 2021 as the “effective date” for an immediate implementation of the revival plan. However, the NCLT refused the plea and asked the consortium to expedite its efforts to revive the airline. A banker privy to the matter told Business Standard on condition of anonymity that lenders have become jittery as the Jalan-Kalrock consortium has not brought in any funds or completed any process to restart the airline. But a person involved in the revival plan claimed that all stakeholders were working towards the revival and denied that there was any disagreement between the consortium and the lenders. To get a better understanding of the challenges facing Jet Airways, we spoke to Mark D Martin, CEO of Martin Consulting, an aviation consulting and safety firm based in Asia. As the expert pointed out, given the challenges it is facing right now, it seems unlikely that the refurbished Jet Airways will be able to start operations by Q2 2022. A more mature and structured timeline needs to be defined for the airline's takeoff. Even so, with the spate of senior-level exits dogging the company, recreating Jet's uniqueness in service quality will be a major challenge. Watch video
Today's Unashamed Alcoholic guest is Captain Robert Piché.On August 24, 2001, Captain Piché was pilot of the Airbus A330 flying Air Transat Flight 236 and managed to land the aircraft safely in the Azores after it lost all power due to fuel exhaustion. This remains a record glide length for a commercial aircraft. His story is depicted in the 2010 film Piché: The Landing of a Man (Piché: Entre ciel et terre). After he was thrust into the spotlight, something else came to light for Captain Piché: his drinking.I wanted to learn about how he knew he had a problem, what life is like now and if people recognize him more for his life-saving piloting or his openness around addiction.I hope you enjoy my conversation with Captain PichéSupport the show
