Her idea, centered on Holiday-themed inflatables, has made neighbors out of strangers, turned sadness into smiles, and provided a way for her community to connect in a powerful and poignant way. Compassion is triggered when we encounter suffering. Also...it exists on a scale that ranges from sharing and witnessing that suffering first in our bodies, souls and minds, but then, for some it turns into taking action on an individual level or en masse. For some it becomes a burden, an obligation, a mission they take on. And for even fewer, it becomes something to solve permanently. But what happens when compassion is compromised in the process? That is your baseline. Heading down the lazy, winding path of least resistance and fostering ambivalence about the work that you do will not ultimately lead to satisfaction or happiness. Play Episode Listen Later Oct 26, 2022 29:58

Election season is upon us, which has me thinking about all the things I want to say to the next President. When it comes to discussing difficult topics, we're taught from a young age to avoid those that hold a lot of power and passion for us at all costs. Polarizing topics like race, politics, religion...All this avoiding has left us with a significant gap in the skills we need to really share this human experience and SEE each other. Often when these topics come up we stonewall in defense to a perceived threat. We avoid it because we don't know HOW to do it in a way that is respectful, loving, kind and productive. So how do we do that? How do we get beyond ourselves? How do we SEE more than what's on the surface? How do we SEE through the hurt, the anger, the disagreement, the misunderstanding of others and ourselves? How do we SEE through perhaps our own past, our own mistakes, our own misjudgments, misunderstandings, and way of thinking? How do we stop being defensive and start being See-through?In episode 4, I introduced a concept, an acronym, that I call SEE and it is a sixth sense that we can develop to train ourselves to really see each other.ü  Stop.  Pause. Take a breath, a beat, a moment, before you do or say something impatient or hurtful, take a moment to consider.ü  Evaluate: Ask questions. Be curious. Could there be more than what I see on the surface? Could I be wrong?ü  Empathize: Find a way in to the feeling. Figure out an angle to put yourself in their shoes. Commit to understand and sharing the feelings rather than dismissing them.Let's move ourselves from Stonewall to SEE-through.Visit www.kellybargabos.com to listen to all past episodes and/or connect with Kelly.

    Shine

Our worst fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God; your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone, and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. In this episode we begin to unpack this quote from Marianne Williamson. How can we shine??Visit www.kellybargabos.com to listen to all past episodes and/or connect with Kelly.

November is Preemie Awareness month and November 17th is World Prematurity Day. 1 in 10 babies in the US are born too soon, which is before 37-40 weeks. Premature babies fight for their very survival and are at risk for significant short-term and long-term health challenges. The health equity gap in our health care system puts women and babies of color at the greatest risk, with racial and ethnic differences in preterm birth rates. In 2020, the rate of preterm birth among non-Hispanic black women was about 50% higher than the rate of preterm birth among non-Hispanic white women  or Hispanic women with African-American mothers. This campaign aims to build awareness and money in order to address and advocate for: EQUITY, ACCESS AND PREVENTION.BEHIND THESE STATISTICS ARE REAL PEOPLE. In this episode, we hear from a very real mom and her story of premature birth with her daughter who was born at 27 weeks weighing one pound, four ounces and measuring twelve inches long. Light it purple and listen in to share this particular human experience.Visit www.kellybargabos.com to listen to all past episodes and/or connect with Kelly.

    Why Art Matters

That urge or compulsion to document, to capture, to witness, to share, because some thing or moment touches you so deeply, is at the core of being human. This is what separates us  from other creatures and living things on the earth. Art separates us. Art is the vehicle we use to capture moments like these. Art is created when a moment, an experience, a sunset, a landscape, a person, overwhelms your senses and compels you to capture the feeling, the emotion, the connection to other humans, in whatever your medium is—words, paint, music, theater, film, pictures, poetry, voice.  This is Why Art Matters.Visit www.kellybargabos.com to listen to all past episodes and/or connect with Kelly.

    The Silence of Drowning

Those who struggle with mental health issues and/or suicidal thoughts can also do so silently. We need to be on the lookout and extend a hand if we can.Drowning can sneak up on you. In movies and television, drowning people are obvious. Screaming, flailing arms waving in the air, someone hears their cries and jumps in to rescue them, just in time.  In real life, people drown silently. Because they cannot breathe, they cannot make a sound. Their body shuts down, not allowing their arms to raise high above the water. Lifeguards and other experts are trained to look for the swimmers who suddenly stop moving, who are not raising their hands, whose heads seem to bob above and below the water, without a sound. We can't always see when someone around us is  struggling, caught in a rip tide, strength used up, unable to remember that swimming parallel to shore is the way out. We must look for those struggling silently. We can't rely on other people to do the rescuing.  Lifeguards aren't always on duty. Sometimes it's the people on the beach who can save a life. Visit www.kellybargabos.com to listen to all past episodes and/or connect with Kelly.
