Episode Summary: In this riveting episode of Functional Health Radio, Dr. Kristin Hieshetter delves deeply into an issue that she fervently advocates for—the prevention and treatment of brain injuries. The episode begins with a worrying reflection on the declining life expectancy in the United States, linking it to both a rise in chronic diseases among children and the seemingly stagnant success in healing heart disease and cancer. Dr. Hieshetter challenges the status quo by questioning the effectiveness of the current healthcare system despite its high costs. Dr. Hieshetter subsequently transitions into a comprehensive discussion about the widespread implications of brain injuries, specifically Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), drawing from insightful resources which she critically examines. She emphasizes the importance of immediate and continued care post-injury, the potential for ongoing cognitive and emotional issues, and magnifies the alarming connection between brain injuries and a host of societal problems. Her clear, evidence-based approach provides both a dire warning and a beacon of hope, suggesting interventions that could change outcomes dramatically. Key Takeaways: • Dr. Kristin Hieshetter zeroes in on the serious implications of chronic traumatic encephalopathy and other brain injuries. • Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is linked to alarming rates of cognitive decline, behavioral issues, and increased risk of dementia. • Early and repetitive exposure to contact sports can advance the onset of neurobehavioral symptoms in children. • Specific interventions such as diet adjustments, low-level laser therapy, and certain supplements can significantly aid in brain injury recovery and prevention. • Dr. Hieshetter advocates for greater awareness and a proactive stance in addressing brain injuries from a functional health perspective. Notable Quotes: • “We are walking around in the most amazing, intelligent, responsive, adapting, and aware system in the world, the human body.” • “Every year younger that participants began to play football, it resulted in reported onset of cognitive and behavioral mood symptoms, 2.5 years.” • “It's what we're being told here in these spaces, these spaces that aren't funded by anybody.” • “I believe we can do this and we have to do it together.” • “Let's look at what we can do to get ahead of all of these things that are plaguing our youth and keep them as healthy as we possibly can.” Resources: • Book: “Truth Doesn't Have a Side” by Dr. Bennett Omalu • NIH-Funded Study on Age of First Exposure to Tackle Football and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy • JAMA Article: Association of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury With and Without Loss of Consciousness with Dementia in US Military Veterans • Internet Journal of Neurology: Transcranial Low-Level Laser Therapy for Brain Injury Be sure to listen to the full episode of Functional Health Radio with Dr. Kristin Hieshetter for an illuminating dive into the critical issue of brain injuries and what we can do to safeguard our most precious asset. Stay tuned for more episodes that bring the truths of functional health into the light.

She opened my eyes to the issues affecting hundreds to thousands of US Military Veterans who have served our country, and then due to a series of circumstances, become deported and exiled from the Country they love so much they were willing to die for it. This ought not to be so. In today's episode, our guest is Sean Matson, Co-Founder & CEO of MATBOCK, a company run by retired Navy SEALS and whose staff are also former US Military Veterans. [8:22] Why should we listen to you? I enjoy authentic conversations with people and sharing what's passionate to me. For me, it's my work, my working out, and my family. I want my work to impact wherever we're doing with our work, I want to inspire other people to work out and be better. And then for my family, trying to push them and lead them as husband and father, to be the best versions of themselves. [11:18] What are some of the things that you could have done that much blown your life up? I didn't have the best father, and my mom entirely raised me. And so before I had that was kind of always in the back of my head, I must be a dad. I had to realize that that train has to keep moving. If that train stops, because I get off, we got more significant problems. It was also the same thing that was reassuring to know now that I'm not there anymore, they could continue to do what they need to do, and they don't need me. I wanted to be the guy leading. I liked when I was in the I'm an officer. So I was naturally in a leadership position. I loved being with my guys and doing everything with guys into and pouring my heart and making sure that I've going to bring these guys home. [14:55] Sean's company and what he does Matbock's name comes with my business partner and my last name. My last name is Matson, and his last name is Steinbach, and we both went through SEAL training. We created this product initially, thought we were going to sell it to a company and license it, and figured give it to someone else, let them do it, we'd make all the money off of the royalties. We know that we're always getting high-quality products because they are on the front line like we can tap into them. There's never a shortage of ideas. There's always a shortage, but it's a good one. The company also gives close to 10 times the typical 510 percent royalty on an idea from a veteran or police officer. [16:53] When we built the company of MatBock, the idea was to hire a guy similar to me to come in and be an r&d guy and pay him 100, 150, $200,000 a year to do that position. But after six months, 12 months, it is no longer relevant. Because again, that train is kept ongoing, it's moving, and he does have experience. But he's not going to know the latest trend. Tapping into resources has been our kind of bread and butter to that and how we've created that. [18:02] Vision or passionate idea to be like an entrepreneur In 2006, Zach and I flew from San Diego to Alaska to do our advanced cold-weather training. It's an eight-hour flight on the back of C 130 military aircraft. And it took 30 of our hours to build and load all our cargo onto the pallet. And we're sitting there just like there's got to be a better way. So we redesign this entire cargo net system. We got a patent for it. We've only sold like one of them now and then, like, ten plus years. It's been ours. It was our worst product ever. But what it ultimately did for us was we stayed laser focus on that one product to get it to market. And now we can get what that took us years to get that to call in a few months to get a product to market, a process in place. [26:25] The rise of Superman It's all about flow state how you get your body into the flow. The cool thing is they use a lot of examples of like extreme sports athletes and talk about how they get to that flow state. [27:35] What promise did God make to the world when He created you? That no matter what, I'm true to me, and that I will always be transparent and lead whoever's with me, in the place that not only we should be going, but I'm going to be going. Key Quotes [23:10 - 23:14] number one reason companies go out of business is they choke on their own success. John Martin is the Director of Aftercare for the Fit-Ops Foundation. Fit-Ops is a charitable organization that trains US Military Veterans to become trainers through a fully-funded three-week Bootcamp. During their time at Fit-Ops, veterans learn the skills and techniques they need to know to become personal trainers, and Fit-Ops also instructs them business and job-searching skills. Most importantly, however, Fit-Ops dedicates much of their training to help veterans to overcome their mental blocks and potential mental trauma. The organization has a dedicated staff that's meant to look after veterans after they leave the camp. This is called “aftercare” and it continues as long as graduates remain in the Fit-Ops network. Greetings, SuperFriends! Today we are joined by Chris Albert. Chris is a trainer, nutrition coach, and podcaster. His show, the Warrior Soul Podcast, empowers US Military Veterans to live their best lives through tools, tactics, ideas, and strategies that he and his amazing guests provide. Chris is also a US Marine Corps Veteran, and he got his start in training and nutrition while he was working on his Ph.D. in Political Science at UC Santa Barbara. He then went on to co-found the world-famous Metroflex Gym Long Beach where he advised pro-bodybuilders and pro athletes on nutrition. Chris has had some crazy experiences around discovering his identity and his genetics, and around growing up without adult figures in his life, plus much more that I'll let him talk to you about in the episode. My goal for the episode was to get in the mind of a real-life warrior and figure out what we can learn about adapting a warrior mindset in our own lives. How can we embody more discipline? How can we reach our goals by staying true to that discipline, and what kind of things can we learn by someone who literally is a warrior and works every single day with warriors? I really enjoyed the episode which is always a good indication that you will as well. Enjoy! -Jonathan Levi
Welcome back to the ModState Podcast where the goal is to "Create Civil Conversation". In the wake of the assassination of an Iranian General tensions with Iran continue to mount. The surgical assassination of General Soleimani has led to the Iranians vowing retribution, the Iraqi Parliament expelling foreign troops from Iraq and President Donald Trump threatening the elimination of cultural sites in Iran. Now is the time to get the perspective of US Military Veterans who explain the process of military procedure, the geopolitical landscape of this corner of the Middle East and explain how troops maintain order through upholding their duty by not adhering to unlawful orders. This is a tense time but both John and Nate show listeners how to engage in disagreement and find common ground. Patrick Coleman is the President of Fair Housing Advocates, Inc. Many of our US Military Veterans are being subjected to housing discrimination on the basis of their Disability when their Service Dog or Emotional Support Animal is either prohibited, or subjected to "pet rules." Housing discrimination goes unnoticed every day and is usually misidentified as landlord & tenant law violations instead of the serious civil rights violations they really are. In fact, the Fair Housing Act provides any victim of housing discrimination a very aggressive process to establish and defend their housing civil rights. Fair Housing Advocates has noticed housing discrimination is going unchecked within our veteran and active duty military, law enforcement, and first responder community- our “Patriots.” 5 Simple Signs of Housing Discrimination: Your Service Dog is prohibited by your Landlord because of its Breed, Size, or Weight You are charged a Pet Fee, Pet Deposit, or Pet Rent for your Service Dog or Emotional Support Animal Your Service Dog is prohibited from using common areas; pool area, fitness center, clubhouse etc. You are forced to live on a designated floor or unit because you are Disabled or have Children You are discouraged from renting or applying because you have Children Complete our Housing Discrimination Questionnaire to learn if you are a victim of housing discrimination.

The following nomination letter was written by Nate Cline, Lieutenant with the Ogden City Police Department: My name is Nate Cline, I am a Lieutenant with the Ogden City Police Department. I would like to nominate Ogden City Police Officer Zachary Nold for the KSL Beyond the Badge. This letter of recommendation highlights some of the reasons Officer Nold is worthy of such distinction and also recognizes how he is making life better for fellow officers, military veterans, their families and our citizens within our community. In 2011 Ogden City Police Officer Zachary Nold joined the United States Army Reserves. During the years after his enlistment, his parents Joan and Roger Nold gained an interest in the much deserved issue, concerning the US Military Veterans suicide epidemic. Having been inspired by the “Lone Survivor” story involving Marcus Luttrell, founder of the Lone Survivor Foundation, Joan and Rodger helped raise funds for the Lone Survivor Foundation where a Labrador dog was raffled to raise funds and resulted in the dog becoming a service animal for a veteran. Labs for Liberty was then born and founded by the Nold’s. Labs for Liberty is a non-profit organization with two main objectives. Raise and train Labrador retrievers to be service animals for veterans and help veterans and their families heal through vacation retreats. Labs for Liberty has also become a healing agent for our local law enforcement community. Officer Zachary Nold hired on with the Ogden City Police Department August 25th 2014. Not only has Officer Nold been a great asset and member of the department he has carried on his and his family’s passion through Labs for Liberty. Officer Nold has taken his board of director’s experience with Labs for Liberty and extended an organizational olive branch to members of the law enforcement family and community veterans in need. Officer Nold’s enthusiasm to help is over whelming. His positive attitude is infections and shows through several of the events he has been involved in. Officer Nold and his family quickly recognized how their organization could benefit their surrounding community. Understanding that police officers also face hardships when involved in a traumatic event, Labs for Liberty has been able to donate several dogs to law enforcement officers in need. Service animals are not only used to assist officers and veterans they are also a very important component in the healthy recovery and function of their families. Officer Nold’s passion has also created an avenue for law enforcement officers to become involved in community charitable events as well. Officer Nold has continued to use his experience and connections to provide service animals and vacation retreats via the organizations “Liberty Outpost” which is a guesthouse located in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, where officers, veterans, teammates and their families can relax, receive assistance and re-discover ways to successfully integrate back into the community. The organization also offers a way for community members to get actively involved in the healing process. Community members volunteer their services to assist, giving the community a direct link to take action and be part of the solution for their law enforcement community and military veterans in need of assistance. Examples include community members volunteering horses for rides, citizens volunteering to cook meals and fishing guides donating services for the individuals and family members. Officer Nold’s story is more of an underlying appreciation for his law enforcement family and the realization that law enforcement has a large impact on its surrounding communities and the members within the community. Keeping our law enforcement officers and military veterans healthy and viable has a huge impact on the lasting relationships within the community. Officer Nold receives no compensation for his efforts nor has he ever asked for it, which is all the better reason he be nominated for such recognition. We are proud to have such an active and charitable officer within our ranks. Thank You. http://www.ksl.com/?nid=462&sid=41627051&title=officer-zachary-nold-ogden-city-police-department
We have quite a unique organization with us today.. America's Veterans Industries is soon to be a Corporation that is made up of six separate business tied together and working toward the common goal of employing US Military Veterans in all walks of life. Did I say 6 businesses? Not according to our guests. They have other businesses in mind that are going to be added on as they grow. Seems to me there is no stopping this organization...
