S&U PLC chairman Anthony Coombs takes Proactive's Stephen Gunnion through the company's full-year results to the end of January 2025. Despite regulatory headwinds in its Advantage Motor Finance division, the company reported stable revenue, with record results from its Aspen Bridging arm. Coombs highlighted the impact of an FCA Section 166 investigation, which added approximately £1.5 million in costs and prompted an £11 million increase in provisions. While these factors significantly reduced profitability in the motor finance business, he expressed confidence that such challenges would not repeat in the coming year. "We've dealt with our customers in a responsible and... Christian-like manner," Coombs said, reflecting on the company's values-driven approach to business. He also noted that internal morale, temporarily shaken during the FCA review, was now recovering strongly. In contrast, the Aspen Bridging division achieved record revenue, profit, and transaction levels. Launched in 2017 to meet demand for bridging and small development finance, the division has proven to be a strategically sound addition to S&U's portfolio. Looking ahead, Coombs expressed cautious optimism for the UK economic landscape, suggesting that interest rates might stabilise. He emphasised the importance of robust underwriting as a defence against economic uncertainty, saying the company has weathered similar conditions in the past eight years. S&U PLC (LSE:SUS) chairman Anthony Coombs takes Proactive's Stephen Gunnion through the company's latest trading update, highlighting positive momentum in its Advantage and Aspen businesses. Coombs noted that Advantage, S&U's motor finance division, has seen improvements in collections and efficiency, aided by an easing in regulatory restrictions. He acknowledged ongoing uncertainties, particularly regarding the Supreme Court's upcoming review on commission disclosure, which has impacted the UK's motor finance sector. However, he expressed confidence that the business remains strong, with better customer engagement through the newly launched site. Discussing Aspen, S&U's property finance division, Coombs highlighted a strong performance with over 50% profit growth. He attributed this success to sustained demand for residential property and a favourable interest rate outlook. Coombs remains cautiously optimistic about the future, citing early signs of regulatory changes having a positive impact on operations. "The efficiencies and the change in techniques that were brought about by regulations is beginning to have some beneficial effect," he stated.
S&U PLC chairman Anthony Coombs the company's interim results to 31 July 2024 and the outlook moving forward. Coombs acknowledged the challenges faced by the Advantage motor finance division, largely due to regulatory changes and higher provisions. However, he emphasised that these issues are temporary and expects improvement next year. "We are working very closely with the FCA to emerge stronger, more compliant, and more efficient," Coombs said, highlighting ongoing efforts to adapt to the new consumer duty regime. He also mentioned the positive performance of the Aspen Bridging business, which saw a 43% increase in its loan book and a 42% rise in profit before tax, reflecting strong growth among property developers and investors. Looking ahead, Coombs remains optimistic about S&U's overall business trajectory, citing the strength of Aspen and expectations for future regulatory clarity in the Advantage business. S&U PLC (LSE:SUS) chairman Anthony Coombs discussed the specialist lender's trading update and current market conditions with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion. Coombs outlined the challenges posed by the regulatory environment, specifically the Financial Conduct Authority's (FCA) scrutiny of the motor finance industry. "We're working with them on a very constructive basis to look at things like consumer duty and how that impacts upon our relations with our customers and in particular on issues like forbearance and affordability," he stated. Coombs said motor finance arm, Advantage, is in a consolidation phase for 2024 due to these regulatory constraints. He emphasised the importance of aligning advances with affordability criteria to maintain financial stability. On a positive note, Coombs highlighted the strong performance of Aspen, S&U's property finance business. Aspen's advances more than doubled to £44.4 million in the first quarter, he noted, underscoring the robust growth and prudent lending practices of the division. Coombs also shared his outlook on the residential property sector, anticipating improvements in market activity and prices due to underlying property scarcity and potential interest rate cuts by the Bank of England. #S&Uplc #AnthonyCoombs #FinanceUpdate #RegulatoryChallenges #PropertyMarket #MotorFinance #AspenFinance #TradingUpdate #InvestmentNews #EconomicOutlook#ProactiveInvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
S&U PLC chairman Anthony Coombs discusses the company's full-year performance and outlook in an interview with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion. Despite facing significant headwinds, especially in the latter half of the period, Coombs noted that S&U demonstrated robust trading, underpinned by the strong demand for its motor finance and property bridging products. Aspen, its property bridging division, achieved a significant milestone, hitting the half-billion lending mark. However, profit growth at motor finance division Advantage was held back by higher interest rates and increased regulatory activity from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) concerning forbearance, affordability, and vulnerable customers. Coombs highlighted the company's adaptability and ongoing cooperation with the FCA to maintain best-in-class procedures. Despite the economic challenges and regulatory pressures, customer numbers at Advantage reached record levels. Coombs also addressed the impact of the current economic situation, including recession fears and cost of living pressures, on the company's lending practices. He expressed neutrality towards the potential change in government, emphasizing the company's resilience and long-term customer service focus. On the property market, Coombs noted the resilience of house prices and a long-term supply shortage, which he believes presents a substantial opportunity for Aspen. He highlighted the division's focus on lending to individuals refurbishing or building properties, a sector underserved by traditional banks. S&U declared a final dividend of 50 pence per share and Coombs expressed confidence in the company's ability to resume sustainable profit growth, maintaining a balance between capital appreciation and dividend yield for shareholders. #S&U #aspen #advantage #Finance #PropertyMarket #MotorFinance #Dividend #EconomicOutlook #RegulatoryChallenges #HousingMarket #CustomerService #ProfitGrowth #ProactiveInvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
S&U PLC chairman Anthony Coombs delved into the company's trading statement for the 12 months ended 31 January 2024 in an interview with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion. Despite a challenging year due to a number of headwinds facing the sector, the motor and property finance group remained resilient, with improving prospects. Coombs attributed the past year's to the cost of living increase and heightened regulatory activities by the Financial Conduct Authority, aimed at protecting customers under economic pressure. This regulatory environment created headwinds for S&U, slightly impacting its results. Consequently, pre-tax profits are expected to be 10 to 15% below analysts' consensus. However, Coombs said the flow of new business into both of S&U's sectors—motor and property finance—is robust, with the company facing challenges in collections due to regulatory scrutiny. S&U's diverse business model, including its Advantage motor finance and Aspen bridging loan business, has helped it navigate pressures. Aspen, in particular, saw cumulative repayments increase by more than 50%, benefiting from high demand in the SME sector for development and refurbishment loans—a demand not fully met by traditional banks. This diversification is expected to aid in the company's recovery, especially as economic conditions improve. #SNUPLC #FinanceSector #MotorFinance #PropertyFinance #EconomicResilience #RegulatoryChallenges #InvestmentGrowth #SMEFinancing #CorporateUpdate #FinancialOutlook #ProactiveInvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

S&U PLC (LSE:SUS) chairman Anthony Coombs speaks to Thomas Warner from Proactive after the specialist motor finance & bridging lender released its interim results for the six months to 31 July. Coombs gives an overview of how the business performed during the period, highlighting a 12% rise in revenues with a slight profit increase. Despite facing economic headwinds, reflected in current stock market valuations and high interest rates affecting business finance costs, he remains optimistic. He notes concerns about the cost of living impacting their customers and emphasises the importance of sustainable loan repayments, especially in motor finance. The property market has seen a slowdown, with a potential 5% reduction in residential values. He says the company "has got to be careful in terms of our underwriting, we've got responsibilities not only in commercial terms but in maintaining excellent relationships with our customers." However, S&U maintains conservative loan-to-value ratios and has witnessed excellent collections in their aspirin bridging operation. Coombs highlights the company's commitment to maintaining high standards in customer relations, especially with new regulatory measures in place. He concludes by saying that while the economic and political landscape remains uncertain, S&U continues to prioritise customer service and fairness. #AnthonyCoombs #S&UPLC #PropertyFinancing #MotorFinancing #EconomicHeadwinds #StockMarketValuations #InterestRates #CostOfLiving #LoanRepayments #ResidentialValues #AspirinBridging #CustomerRelations #FinancialRegulations #EconomicOutlook #BritishCompanies #ProactiveInvestors #S&U #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Hey everyone, welcome back, today on episode 370 of The Outdoor Biz Podcast I'm talking with Outdoor Vitals founder, Tayson Whittaker. Growing up Tayson wanted to be outdoors every day of his life. It called him to explore, regardless of the time of year or the weather. But he didn't have the right gear to prepare for the elements. By the time he graduated College, he had figured out how to make better gear and was selling no-name sleeping bags to his friends. We're going to talk about all that and more. You can contact me here: email: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com or leave me a message on Speakpipe! Brought to you by: Thrive Market Show Notes How were you introduced to the outdoors? I feel like I always was introduced to the outdoors but there's just different aspects that I learned over time. I grew up in this small town of, six or seven thousand people and was always able to get outdoors. Whether it was on my own or with friends. Every weekend it seemed like, by the time I was about 10 years old, on my parents would drag this old 1970s trailer up the mountain and we'd go camp for two days. Half the time we're sleeping outside the trailer. cause it's not like it was a big trailer. I just spent a lot of time out there with my brothers and family. Your profile mentions you were a college student, where did you go to school? I moved down here to Cedar City, Utah. for those who are familiar with Utah, it's the southern part of the state down here by Zion and Cedar Breaks. I came down here for college, went to college at S U combined a lot of my passions. I really enjoyed business and so I graduated in finance, but more than that, I started the entrepreneurship club here at the school. And every weekend and weekdays it seemed like I was, taking friends out to the caves and getting into ultra-light backpacking myself. And so that's really where all of this started, in my very last month of school I filed for the business name. And how did you learn to design gear? I really attribute all of my design skills from the time I spend outside. In retrospect it's easier to look back now than it was when you first starting, but I just always had this knack to me that I wanted to know details and specifications. I grew up riding motorcycles and stuff on trails and whatnot around here. You could have named any Honda or Yamaha product and I could have told you how much it weighed and how much gas it could fit in its tank and how many inches of clearance it had and these weird specs, right? So I just always loved details. And then when it came to designing gear, I think it was just really natural for me. In terms of specs and what those turn into. I grew up outdoors, but I didn't grow up backpacking and I spent a lot of time just doing exactly that. I mean, the amount of times I just slept in my backyard, right? Because we started with sleeping bags and so I was just sleeping in my backyard in the middle of winter here in, in southern Utah just to learn as much as I possibly could and really hone in and improve product. On your website looks like the Rhyolite Pack was your first pack. Tell us a little bit about that and how it came to life. Yeah, so the Rhyolite Pack was my first pack and really my only pack that I designed a hundred percent myself. And that was just a marriage of what I'd used and what I'd loved. Then thinking about some of the features. The side zipper access, that was one of the favorite features on that piece. Being able to get into the bottom of your pack without fully unloading the backpack. That was really, something that I had seen on other packs, had used a little bit and loved. What was your, so your testing process back then, was it just you taking it out and testing? Yeah, so now obviously we can send bags off to get rated. But what we publicly like to claim is that we sleep in every sleeping bag down to within five degrees of its rating. That's like our stamp, and that takes a lot of field time, it takes opportunities that it's gonna be this temperature at this time and we gotta get out there and sleep in this bag. So there, there's some definite field time there, but we will also, take a poll on what things rate at, with the modern testing. Where did the name Outdoor Vitals come from? I designed our first logo just on a school computer, honestly, at college, and I'm not a designer in that sense of the word. The name wasn't much different, I guess you could say. just the idea of trying to merge different things that could potentially create a great name, right? And to me, really the name comes from the outdoors being a vital part of my life. I think it's important for everyone to get outdoors. I think it's absolutely critical in this day and age. Physical health, mental health, emotional health, that is the base. That's what grounds us. And so to me it really stems from this concept of the outdoors is a vital piece what's necessary to keep your sanity, at least for me anyway. I saw on your website 'opening the outdoors' is your mantra. What do you mean by that? Probably the biggest thing that drives me is to help people connect to the outdoors. Some of the biggest horror stories I ever hear are when I hear people that say something along the lines of, yeah, I went camping one time as a kid. I froze my butt off. I'll never go back. They've lost a lifetime of adventure, experience, connection, all of these amazing benefits that I know as a company knows. So opening the outdoors is this concept that the outdoors don't necessarily feel like they're open to everyone. Whether it's from product or whether it's from experience, right? If you don't have someone to hold your hand and take you outdoors, you don't have the confidence. But at the same time, gear really can matter. If you have great gear, you can focus on the experience there instead of being filled with anxiety that it might get cold tonight or that some rain might come through or, am I really prepared? All these types of things. And so we focus heavily on education. What's gonna keep people from getting outdoors really comes down to reducing their unknowns, those unknowns turn into fears, right? Anything that you have fear about is typically an unknown. And so if we can educate people and reduce the amount of unknowns, they build confidence, and by building that confidence in the gear, in their skillset and their knowledge and packing list, whatever we can possibly do, we help open the outdoor. and that just really pulls back to our purpose of connecting people to the vital outdoors. And how do you guys do that? What kind of education programs do you support or do you offer? Yeah, so from the very beginning, in fact, there are still videos of me in this tiny, little duplex that I own, and I'm sitting in front of our coffee table on a five-gallon bucket in front of our Drapes. I'm filming how to take care of a sleeping bag, how do you stuff the sleeping bag? How do you store a sleeping bag? How do you wash a sleeping bag? I mean, from the very, very beginning it was just any education we could do primarily through YouTube. How do we pack, what are gear lists? Taking 'em on trail to really showcase all of these, anything that we could. And so video has been the main media for us. However, that has changed a bit to also introducing podcasts. So we have a podcast called the Live Ultralight Podcast. That's our second medium now. Podcasts are huge. I think podcasts and YouTube channels are must have for business these days. You can do so much with that. You guys already create, we're creating fantastic gear, but you went through another evolution to create better gear, which you now, I think you now call outdoor vitals 2.0. Is that right? Internally, that's how we like to talk about it. You just say that to some of our big brand followers and they're gonna know exactly what that means. But really, what that meant is, I didn't have this Rockstar entrance. I didn't have a house to mortgage. I didn't come from a background of designing product or this is my second or third business startup. I didn't have those connections. And so really from 2014 to 2018 was us building cash flow, building team, building opportunities, learning grow. And we were always offering amazing product at the price points we were offering. But our own sites started to increase from better experiences, helping people be able to just have so much confidence in their gear outside. And so as those all raised in 2018, We launched our first apparel piece called the Loft Tech Jacket. And the loft tech jacket was something that we launched on Kickstarter and we were able to pre-sell a million dollars worth of that jacket. Then from that opportunity, I took that and I ran as fast as I could with it. So we went and basically petitioned some of the world's best fabric mills, the world's best suppliers, world's best wool producers, and I just was able to sell 'em on the brand and say, Hey, look, we're a direct to consumer brand. We don't care about price points when we're designing. You're gonna love to work with us, by the way, look at this third party website showing what we're capable of, showing that we've sold this much product on one product and the story that we're able to tell you should work with us. And we had a tremendous success rate getting into the world's top factories and mills. And so we pivoted off of that as well. At that point in time. design had just outgrown me. I didn't have the time and the resources to put into it and frankly, people that were trained and educated in this were gonna be able to, do things more efficiently and so on, so forth. So I also at that time, went out and hired our lead designer today. And between, the team growth and our partner growth, it debuted this concept of 2.0 where we were able to take and do things with product that we just simply weren't able to do before, that took a few years of us behind the scenes working our butts off. So it seems like you get outside as much as you can. In addition to your camping and, product testing trips, what other activities do you participate in? I still ride a dirt bike just a little bit. I need to ride a mountain bike a lot more than I do, but, so there's those aspects. I think I just love to explore. I love to see new stuff. Right. So whether it's Cross Country travel a little bit or anything related to that. I started picking up trail running a little bit, which has been a lot of fun. But that's pretty similar to hiking, I guess you can say Do you have any suggestions or advice for folks wanting to get into the outdoor biz? I would say like my biggest mistakes that I would advise other people is just, Obsess about product and what you're doing there versus what maybe what you think a business should be doing, where we live in this day and age, where business can get turned on its head in a heartbeat. Meaning like the old concept of you need 10 sleeping bags, to have a line of sleeping bags, to be anybody who's anybody. . It's just totally false. Now you can have a single product such as that loft tech jacket did for us that can turn a whole business on its head and, be something truly innovative and whatnot. So in my opinion, if you're wanting to get into this space, just be obsessed about the product. What are some of your favorite books? Some of the time I'm reading business books and we are reading those as a team. So I love Jim Collins and Good To Great and some of those books. I definitely was that era of growing up like on, on just like, Fiction books, like Harry Potter and some of those. I would be that kid, like as a fourth grader, I'd be out there mowing the lawn with a cassette player listening to Harry Potter. But I've also really enjoyed, recently, and like The Terminal List, it's, I guess probably more in the public eye with their Amazon series that they're doing on it. But the books are really good. Is there anything else you wanna say to our listeners or ask of our listeners? I'd just say get outside and take people outside, educate yourself. Where can people find you? Host Carl Lewis and NFL punter James Godlonton go through their best bets for Week 11 in the NFL including Carl's parlay. Tennessee Titans at Green Bay Packers The Packers hammered Tennessee 40-14 the last time they met at Lambeau Field on Dec. 27, 2020. Aaron Rodgers and Christian Watson connected for three TDs in Week 10, which kept their NFC playoff hopes alive. Tennessee's offense has struggled, but Derrick Henry should feast against a Packers' defense that allows 140.6 rushing yards per game. Tennessee wins on a walk-off field goal by Randy Bullock. Chicago Bears at Atlanta Falcons Justin Fields, who has 325 rushing yards the last two weeks, is drawing comparisons to Michael Vick. Will Fields, a Kennesaw, Ga., native, put on a show against Vick's former team? Atlanta had a long week to bounce back from a Thursday Night Football loss against the Panthers. These are two of the three worst passing offenses in the NFL. Fields' play-making on the run will make the difference. Carolina Panthers at Baltimore Ravens The Ravens had a bye week, and that should help against the Panthers. Baltimore is 2-2 at home, and all of those games have been decided by four points or less. The Ravens are 27th in pass offense; one spot ahead of the Panthers. Will Lamar Jackson or P.J. Walker finds a rhythm through the air? The Panthers are 0-4 S/U on the road. Trust the home team. Cleveland Browns at Buffalo Bills The Browns still have two games before Deshaun Watson returns from an 11-game suspension, and they are going to be brutal. Buffalo is coming off a loss, and Josh Allen will bounce back against a Cleveland defense that was torched by Miami for 39 points and 491 yards in Week 10. The Browns won the last meeting 19-16 in Allen's second season in 2019. The Bills turn the tables. Washington Commanders at Houston Texans The Commanders are on the fringe of the playoff picture, and they have won two road games this season. Houston does not have much outside a solid rookie season from running back Dameon Pierce (772 yards, 3 TDs). The Texans are 0-4 ATS when they are an underdog of less than seven points. Philadelphia Eagles at Indianapolis Colts If Colts interim coach Jeff Saturday knocks the Eagles off, then will he be voted Coach of the Year? Jonathan Taylor resurfaced with 147 yards and a TD in Week 10, and that's the recipe Saturday is going to ride with Philadelphia coming off a short week. It will work into the second half, but the Eagles get back on track after Monday's loss to Washington. Jalen Hurts hits A.J. Brown with the game-winning touchdown in the final minute. New York Jets at New England Patriots These teams met in Week 8, and the Patriots won 22-17 on the strength of five field goals by Nick Folk. The Jets had a bye week to enjoy the victory against Buffalo. Zach Wilson had a season-low 48.8% completion percentage in the first meeting against the Patriots. What will Wilson learn from that experience on the road against a Bill Belichick defense? Los Angeles Rams at New Orleans Saints The Rams have lost three straight games, a stretch in which they have averaged 14.7 points per game. Now, Cooper Kupp might be out with an ankle injury. The Saints have averaged 11.5 points in back-to-back losses, and they have lost four of five. When two bad teams meet, anything can happen. This is a coin-flip game. Detroit Lions at New York Giants The Lions have a chance for a rare three-game win streak, and their offense looks better when Amon-Ra St. Brown is healthy. New York is 3-1 S/U in home games this season, and all four have been decided by eight points or less. The Giants keep it moving in the right direction in a thriller. The Lions still can't stop the run, and Saquon Barkley will have a huge game. Las Vegas Raiders at Denver Broncos It's the Josh McDaniels bowl in a battle of the most disappointing teams of 2022. Denver has the top scoring defense in the NFL, and yet the offense has been miserable. The Raiders have won the last five in this rivalry, but the Broncos flip the script. Dallas Cowboys at Minnesota Vikings The Cowboys are favored against Minnesota, which continues to produce close-game victories. Kirk Cousins is 2-8 lifetime against Dallas, and that includes a 1-2 mark with Minnesota. Still, the strong running game with Dalvin Cook and connection with Justin Jefferson has gone a long way this season. All that said, the fact Dallas is favored makes us think Dak Prescott will bounce back on the road. Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers The Steelers beat the Bengals 23-20 and are a different team with T.J. Watt on the field. The Bengals, however, are coming off a bye week. Joe Burrow will not throw four interceptions this time, and the running game behind Joe Mixon will be a difference maker. Cincinnati picks up its first AFC North victory of the season. Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Chargers Sunday, 8:20 p.m., NBC The Chiefs have scored 40-plus points in three of their four road games, and they have a chance to win a ninth straight game at the Chargers' home field. Patrick Mahomes II maintains the hot hand, and the Chiefs continue to look like the team to beat in the AFC. San Francisco 49ers (-7.5) at Arizona Cardinals The 49ers are rounding into shape as a playoff contender, and the tag-team backfield of Christian McCaffrey and Eli Mitchell combined for 32 carries for 127 yards against the Chargers in Week 10. San Francisco will continue to grind out wins against Arizona, which might be without Kyler Murray (hamstring) for another week. The Cardinals did sweep this series in 2021, but the 49ers are the better team this time.
Host Carl Lewis is joined by experienced NFL punter James Godlonton for Week 1 of the NFL. Which home underdogs are going to come through in Week 1 of the NFL season? That's the big question knowing that 10 home teams are underdogs, starting with the defending Super Bowl champion in the Thursday Night Football opener. The Bills, a popular pick to win Super Bowl LVII, are slight favourites against the Rams in what should be a thrilling quarterback duel between Josh Allen and Matthew Stafford. Which home underdogs are interesting? The Vikings could be a trendy pick against the Packers in a battle of NFC North teams. The Lions, this year's Hard Knocks superstars, are trying to start the season off with a victory against the Eagles. Those are a few we have an eye on. NFL picks, predictions for Week 1 Buffalo Bills (-2.5) at Los Angeles Rams The defending Super Bowl champion is 14-3 S/U in the NFL Kickoff Game. The Bills are “all-in” on a Super Bowl run, but the Rams are still more than talented enough to make a run at a repeat. The Rams are at home, and Matthew Stafford shakes off any doubts about a hangover season with a game-winning TD drive, complete with a TD pass to Cooper Kupp. Take the home underdog. Pick: Rams 28, Bills 24 San Francisco 49ers (-7) at Chicago Bears Let the Trey Lance era begin. Lance settles in behind a strong running game led by Eli Mitchell with Deebo Samuel mixed in against the Bears' run defense, which will improve under new coach Matt Eberflus. Justin Fields has trouble against the 49ers' pass rush, led by fellow former Buckeye Nick Bosa. Still a chance for a back-door cover here. Pick: 49ers 24, Bears 17 New Orleans Saints (-5.5) at Atlanta Falcons Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, the top two picks in the 2015 NFL Draft, are together again. It's a new era for the Saints with Dennis Allen as head coach, too. The Saints have won the last four at Atlanta by an average of seven points per game. We're tempted to pull the upset here, but it's tough to go against that trend. Pick: Saints 24, Falcons 23 Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals (-6.5) The Bengals have a chance to beat the rival Steelers for the fourth straight time; something that hasn't happened since a six-game streak from 1988-90. That's when Cincinnati was the better team with Boomer Esiason. Guess what? The Bengals are the better team with Joe Burrow. Pick: Bengals 30, Steelers 20 Philadelphia Eagles (-4) at Detroit Lions Sunday, 1 p.m, FOX The Lions haven't won their opener since 2017, but the opportunity for Dan Campbell to get the second season off on the right foot is there. Philadelphia was 6-1 S/U as a favorite last season, and they made some solid additions on defense. Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown combines for a strong connection early, and the Eagles escape Ford Field with a victory. Pick: Eagles 29, Lions 26 New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins (-3) It's the battle of the Alabama QBs. Tua Tagovailoa has a pair of speedy receivers in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, and the Patriots enter their second year with Mac Jones. The Patriots have lost four of their last five in Miami, and there is a lot of uncertainty around the offense. That's why this is the upset nobody sees coming in Week 1. Well, Bill Belichick does. Pick: Patriots 24, Dolphins 20 Baltimore Ravens (-7) at New York Jets The Joe Flacco revenge game is here. The Jets quarterback will get a shot at his old team, and New York has a few impressive rookies in Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner. Lamar Jackson, however, is in prove-it mode around an offense that has enough playmakers to make a run in the AFC. Baltimore has won nine of the last meetings against the Jets. Pick: Ravens 30, Jets 22 Jacksonville Jaguars at Washington Commanders (-3) Sunday, 1 p.m, FOX The Carson Wentz era begins in Washington, but Jacksonville coach Doug Pederson has some experience against the Commanders from his Philadelphia days. That means a tight game on both sides, and Washington won't have Chase Young in this game. This one could be a field goal at the buzzer, and we'll stick with the home team. Pick: Commanders 24, Jaguars 21 Cleveland Browns at Carolina Panthers (-2.5) Sunday, 1 p.m, CBS The Baker Mayfield Bowl is here. The Browns are relying on Jacoby Brissett through the Deshaun Watson suspension, and the potential headlines if Mayfield beats his former team will be off the charts. Nick Chubb, however, will lead a ground-heavy attack and Myles Garrett comes up with the strip sack in crunch time. Cleveland holds off the potential embarrassment, but not by much. Pick: Browns 22, Panthers 20 Indianapolis Colts (-8) at Houston Texans The Texans open the Lovie Smith era, and it's going to be a rebuild. Dameon Pierce will impress in spots, the Colts – led by veteran quarterback Matt Ryan – flex as a potential Super Bowl contender at their AFC South rival's expense. The Colts are 8-5 as the away favorite under Frank Reich. Pick: Colts 28, Texans 21 New York Giants at Tennessee Titans (-5.5) The Giants open the Brian Daboll era, and the offence needs to be better after averaging 15.2 points per game last season. Saquon Barkley is in a prove-it year, but yards will be tough against the Titans' defence. Tennessee controls the home opener around Ryan Tannehill and a healthy Derrick Henry. Pick: Titans 28, Giants 20 Green Bay Packers (-1.5) at Minnesota Vikings Sunday, 4:25 p.m, FOX This is a tough one to pick. Aaron Rodgers has an unproven group of receivers at U.S. Bank Stadium, which is one of the tougher venues. The Vikings have a new coach in Kevin O'Connell, and Kirk Cousins will be aggressive with Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen. The Packers are 2-4 in their last six trips to Minnesota. This won't be easy, but we'll trust Rodgers to be better than last year's Week 1 disaster. Pick: Packers 28, Vikings 22 Kansas City Chiefs (-4.5) at Arizona Cardinals Sunday, 4:25 p.m, CBS The Patrick Mahomes-Kliff Kingsbury connection is a narrative, but the focus will shift toward Kyler Murray, who was the headlines for most of the offseason. How will he fare without DeAndre Hopkins? How will Mahomes look without Tyreek Hill? The Chiefs are 12-1 S/U against the NFC teams in the regular season the last three seasons. Perhaps that is why the line has bumped up two points. Pick: Chiefs 33, Cardinals 24 Las Vegas Raiders at Los Angeles Chargers (-3) Sunday, 4:25 p.m, CBS This was a wild game in Week 18 last season, and these are two AFC West contenders. The Raiders have split the last eight road meetings against the Chargers, and new coach Josh McDaniels brings a new element to the rivalry. Look for Derek Carr to stay comfortable with Davante Adams and Darren Waller, but the Raiders have to keep the ground game going late to preserve the victory. The Chargers were 5-4 at home last season. Pick: Raiders 27, Chargers 24 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2) at Dallas Cowboys This line dropped a half point toward the Cowboys, who pushed the Buccaneers last year in Week 1 in a 31-29 shootout. Tom Brady returned from retirement, and at 45 years old he will be the focus against Dallas' defense led by Micah Parsons. This game could play out a lot like the last one, but we're not done betting on Brady in the clutch yet. Pick: Buccaneers 31, Cowboys 27 Denver Broncos (-6.5) at Seattle Seahawks Monday, 8:15 p.m., ESPN/ABC Russell Wilson won't have to wait long to face his former team. The Broncos have a talented, young team, too, and the Seahawks have a tenuous quarterback situation at best. Seattle ranked 31st in pass defense last season. Wilson will cap Week 1 with a memorable MNF performance. Pick: Broncos 30, Seahawks 20

Phycobilins are light harvesting pigments of cyanobacteria and red algae. In cyanobacteria, four phycobiliproteins are organized in phycobilisomes: phycocyanin (PC), allophycocyanin (APC), and often also phycoerythrocyanin (PEC) or phycoerythrin (PE). Their phycobilin chromophores, linear tetrapyrroles, are generally bound to the apoprotein at conserved positions by cysteinyl thioether linkages. A final step in phycobiliprotein biosynthesis is the post-translational phycobilin addition to the various biliproteins. In vivo, the correct attachment of most chromophores is catalyzed by binding-site and chromophore-specific lyases. Only two such lyases, which both belong to the E/F-type were known at the beginning of this work. Two additional types, S/(U)-type and T-type lyase, have been characterized during this work. In addition, the correct structures of the products from all three lyase types have been verified, and evidence was obtained for the reaction mechanisms. This characterization relied on two methodological advances. The first is the use of a multi-plasmidic expression system for reconstitution of phycobiliproteins in E. coli. After cloning of apophycobiliprotein genes, phycobilin biosynthesis genes and (putative) lyase genes from several cyanobacteria, various phycobiliproteins could be biosynthesized in the heterologous E. coli system using dual plasmids containing the respective genes. This heterologous system produces higher yields than the in vitro reconstitution, it is nearly devoid of spontaneous binding, better reproducible, and more easily controlled. The second methodological advance is the consequent use of a combination of chromatographic, electrophoretic and spectroscopic tools that allowed a full characterization of the structure and binding sites of attached chromophores. This included, besides optical spectroscopy, in particular mass and magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy. Using the unmodified genes coding for both subunits of PEC, as well as their cystein mutants, three lyases were identified for the three binding site. Besides the already known isomerizing lyase, PecE/PecF, for Cys-84 of α-PEC, these are the two new lyases, CpcT (all5339) for Cys-153 of β-PEC, and CpcS (alr0617) for Cys-82 of β-PEC. The spectroscopic analysis proved that the chromophores (PCB and PVB)are correctly attached to these three binding sites. Similarly, three lyases were identified for the three binding sites of CPC. The well known heterodimeric lyase (CpcE/CpcF) catalyzes the covalent attachment of PCB to αC84 of CPC, CpcS catalyses the site-selective attachment of PCB to cysteine-β84 in CpcB; and CpcT for cysteine-β155 of CpcB. CpcE/F is specific for CpcA, while CpcS and CpcT can react with both CpcB and PecB. We also tested the lyase activity of the deoxyhyposyl-hydroxylase (DOHH) from the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum. This enzyme has Heat-like repeats that are characteristic for the E/F-type lyases, but it had not chromophore-attaching activity. The substrate specificity of the new lyase, CpcS (coded by alr0617), was further tested with APC subunits; It is very unspecific with regard to the acceptor protein and attaches PCB to ApcA1, ApcB, ApcD ApcF, as well as to the product of an additional gene, apcA2; of unknown function that is highly homologous to apcA1 coding for the APC α-subunit. Obviously, this lyase has a much broader substrate specificity than the E/F-type lyases, but it has high site-specificity, attaching the chromophore exclusively to the Cys-84 (consensus sequence) binding site of the APC subunits. CpcS from Anabaena PCC7120 is a relatively simple system, it acts as a monomer, and does not require any cofactors. CpcS binds PCB rapidly (
