Faithspotting co-hosts Mike and Kenny are joined by writer / director Max Walker-Silverman to discuss his newest film Rebuilding, which stars Josh O'connor, Lily LaTorre, Meghann Fahy, Kali Reis, and Amy Madigan. Set in Max's home state of Colorado, Rebuilding is a moving story of a family and community coming together in the aftermath of a wildfire that destroyed their homes and scorched their land and lives. Max drew upon his experience of losing a family home and acerage to a fire when he was growing up. Rebuilding is distributed by Bleeker Street. Following Kenny and MIke's discussion of the film and faith they spotted, there is an interview with Max Walker-Silverman. In addition, Mike's co-teacher Michael Logan and one of their students, Trip Breslin join in the interview. Faith Topics: Hope in Rebuilding: Hope is grounded in faith in the possibility of new life and community plays an important role in rebuilding. Community can be family, friends, neighbors as well as strangers. Rebuilding New Not Same Lives. Though the temptation is to seek to rebuild life just as it was before, new life will be different, and even if it seems less, it can often be a more fulfilling life. Faith is change, and the Paradox of Home. Individuals, families, and communities often seek out "home"because it is known, comfortable, and predictable, yet home is typically changing or under threat of change. Part of faith is growth and accepting and embracing change. Seeking to avoid change and growth is based in fear and the opposite of faith. Non-Anxious lives. Faith fosters a life that is non-anxious in the midst of change and even struggle. While everyone experiences anxiety in life and seasons of struggle and loss, faith, including the support of community, is an instrument in releasing anxiety. Resurrection follows Good Friday. As witnessed in the Gospels, Jesus had to experience the suffering of Good Friday and the tomb before the resurrection. Most people will also experience suffering prior to the new life of resurrection. People of the Christian faith are Easter people prior to their death and passage from life unto life.
Bongani Bingwa speaks to journalist Ufrieda Ho from FixLocal about a grassroots crime-fighting initiative in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg. In a community too often overlooked and under-policed, over 400 volunteer patrollers have stepped up to protect their neighbourhoods, walking or cycling through the streets in reflective vests, acting as the eyes and ears of the police. Unarmed and unpaid, these men and women are tackling gangsterism, drug abuse, and gender-based violence head-on. Backed by local businesses and supported by the non-profit RADA, the initiative is not just about safety, it’s about dignity, ownership, and hope. Ho explores how this movement is transforming lives and showing what’s possible when communities take the lead. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. In this episode of What She Did Next, Kehla sits down with Hope Pedraza—Functional Practitioner, Human Design & Gene Keys Mentor, podcast host, and 3/5 Manifesting Generator—for a deeply vulnerable and empowering conversation about rebuilding from rock bottom and aligning health, business, and life through your energetic blueprint. Hope shares how running two successful businesses from a place of hustle and perfectionism led her body to total burnout—so much so that lab results revealed her adrenals were “in the toilet.” When the pandemic hit, her world crumbled further: she faced a $300K lawsuit, had to file for bankruptcy, and watched her brick-and-mortar business collapse while pregnant and sick. But this wasn't the end—it was the portal. Through Human Design and Gene Keys, Hope restructured her business, reclaimed her energy, and healed years of self-sacrifice and disordered patterns. Together, she and Kehla explore how her undefined root center, 55th Gene Key (victimization to freedom), and 3/5 profile shaped her transformation from rigidity to flow—and how she now guides powerhouse women to stop bypassing their bodies and honor their unique energetic design for sustainable success.

Send us a textThe aftermath of disaster often reveals the most profound aspects of humanity—our capacity for resilience, generosity, and connection. In this deeply moving conversation, disaster relief volunteer Jeremy Barker opens his heart about the transformative journey that began when he abandoned his fishing plans and $70,000 in savings to help rebuild a storm-ravaged community in Barnardsville, North Carolina.Jeremy's story unfolds with raw honesty as he describes how what started as building emergency sheds has evolved into creating a community retreat center—a place for healing, connection, and renewal. "This place is more than just where we build sheds," he reflects. "This is a retreat and a place where we've built infrastructure to serve the community."The challenges are immense—from coordinating volunteers from across the country to installing proper septic systems, managing Airbnb properties for displaced homeowners, and preparing fields for regrowth. Yet through these obstacles, Jeremy finds unexpected rewards. He shares vulnerable insights about the difficulty of taking days off: "Your brain will not let you take a day off. The only thing to fix it is to get out there and deliver a couple sheds, hug somebody—it recharges you."Perhaps most powerful is Jeremy's reflection on the relationships formed through disaster response: "The biggest reward in this whole thing is the relationships I've built." From local community members to fellow volunteers and the remarkable response from the shed industry nationwide, these connections have become the beating heart of recovery efforts.Looking ahead, Jeremy sees this experience not as an endpoint but as preparation: "This is a training field. We're just being set up for the next thing we're going to have to deliver and help." His perspective transforms disaster response from a temporary intervention into part of a longer journey of service.Want to support disaster recovery efforts or connect with these remarkable volunteers? Send us a textWhat happens when a one-handed tile expert with a powerful redemption story joins forces with a shed industry leader during a natural disaster? Something extraordinary.Jeremy Barker introduces himself as "the Billy Graham of tile," but his journey goes far deeper than his professional expertise. After losing his left hand at 23 in a tragic chop saw accident, Jeremy faced a choice: surrender to limitation or embrace a new path forward. Choosing the latter, he built a reputation as a premier educator and advocate in the tile industry, creating the Carolina Tile Posse and partnering with his wife in their company Bathmatic Custom Tile and Shower. But Jeremy's most profound battle wasn't with physical disability—it was with addiction. For over a decade, crystal meth controlled his life, keeping him from being present for his family despite maintaining financial stability. His October 2020 sobriety marked a turning point that would eventually position him perfectly for disaster relief work. When devastating floods hit their region, Jeremy and Sam found themselves drawn together by a shared conviction: everyone deserves help, regardless of their past or present circumstances. Their partnership has delivered over 600 emergency shelters to storm victims, often facing criticism from those who question whether people with troubled histories "deserve" assistance. The conversation takes us to Carson's Farm, where Jeremy established a base for building emergency housing, starting with modest goals before connecting with Sam's operation. Together, they've not only provided shelter but have confronted abuse, sex trafficking, and the exploitation that often follows disasters. Their work has virtually eliminated homelessness in communities where they've focused their efforts. This episode challenges listeners to reconsider who deserves second chances and reminds us that those who have experienced profound struggles often become the most effective advocates for others in crisis. Can someone with a troubled past become an instrument of hope? Jeremy and Sam answer with a resounding yes.Tune in next week for the conclusion of this powerful two-part conversation about redemption, purpose, and the transformative power of compassion in disaster's wake. For more information or to know more about the Shed Geek Podcast visit us at our website.Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube at the handle @shedgeekpodcast.To be a guest on the Shed Geek Podcast visit our website and fill out the "Contact Us" form.To suggest show topics or ask questions you want answered email us at info@shedgeek.com.This episodes Sponsors:Studio Sponsor: Union Grove LumberCardinal ManufacturingCardinal LeasingShed Challenger

When the president stands accused of drug trafficking, what hope is there? From 2014, for eight years Juan Orlando Hernandez ruled Honduras like his personal fiefdom. A Central American strongman comparable with some of the worst from decades past, under his presidency Honduras began a rapid descent into a so-called “narco-state”. The allegations against his government soon started to mount up: human rights violations, corruption and impunity; accusations of torture and extrajudicial killings by the police and military. And at its heart, the claim by US prosecutors of a multi-million dollar drug smuggling ring, overseen from the presidential palace itself. Just weeks after he left power in January 2022, Juan Orlando Hernandez was arrested and extradited to the US to face drug trafficking charges. American prosecutors allege he used his security forces to protect some drugs shipments and eliminate competitors. Will Grant, the BBC's Central America Correspondent, finds out what life was like under the disgraced president and meets some people trying to instil a little hope in a nation which hasn't had any for a long time. He meets Norma, the mother of Keyla Martinez, who was killed in a police cell. Initially, the police said she had killed herself but hospital reports later proved this wasn't the case. Now, can Norma Martinez's campaign for justice bring a sense of hope to those who don't trust the authorities and have endured years of rampant corruption and police impunity? Producer: Phoebe Keane Fixer in Honduras: Renato Lacayo

Did you know that poverty and single parent homes have a very high correlation with being imprisoned later in life? Did you know that 50% of people get re-imprisoned within two years of being released from prison? In this episode, we celebrate Teresa Njoroge, founder and CEO of Clean Start Kenya. Teresa Njoroge worked in the Banking industry for 10 years. She was wrongfully convicted and served time in the largest Women's prison in Kenya, the Langata Women Maximum Security Prison, along with her 3 month old baby. This experience drove her to start Clean Start. In this episode we talk about her personal journey of being in prison and reintegrating into society as well as the stories of different women that she works with. We talk about the link between poverty and imprisonment, alternative forms of justice and the way forward. An incredibly inspiring story of her courage and the difficult work done by Clean Start. #incarceration #prison #prisonrefrom #courage #journey #inspiration --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/anewkindofcelebrity/message
At some point we've all experienced a season of disorientation and confusion, and have found ourselves struggling with a loss of hope. This is not unlike the disciples of Jesus, who after His crucifixion, death, and burial, were scattered and even struggled to connect the dots on what the empty tomb meant three days later. From Luke 24, Pastor Gabe teaches from one of the most detailed resurrection encounters that we have in all of Scripture and three observations regarding the hope that Jesus wants to rebuild in our lives.

After working his way through and up to corporate America and reaching the perceived success level of managing a $580M labor line and over 22,000 employees across the US, Canada, & Puerto Rico. Josh Knutti says he was never satisfied. So he set out on his own to acquire a $10M corporation. After working and negotiating to get the deal done for over a year it finally was revealed to him that the seller had used him to increase the price and sold the company 3 days later for cash. This sent Josh in a negative mental health spiral so bad that he ended up in a fleabag motel with Jack Daniel, cocaine, & a shotgun ready to end his life. Thankfully the gun literally malfunctioned and it did not go off. After he did A LOT of work virtually trying everything to regain his mental health & positive self-image it was at that point that he realized that one of the main reasons why he was in that motel was because of his thoughts and the way he viewed the world. It was at this time that he vowed to spend the rest of his time, money, and life to help as many people OverCome life's obstacles, the biggest one being themselves CONNECT WITH JOSH: https://www.overcomingyoupodcast.com/ QUESTIONS ASKED: How has the way you view yourself evolved? Tonight's special guest is Sally Linn from Washington State, founder and speaker at 'Truth Speaks, LLC', where they feature Sexual Assault Prevention Webinars & Presentations. The mission of Truth Speaks is to speak the truth about sexual harassment, abuse, and assault in a non-threatening environment, to produce change. Sally was trained as the teen Sexual Assault Prevention Educator at Rebuilding Hope! Sexual Assault Center for Pierce County. She's a member of the Washington Coalition for Sexual Assault Programs, and the Pierce County Commission Against Domestic Violence. She is the former co-chair on the Education/Awareness Committee of the Pierce County Anti-Trafficking Network. Sally has a message for victims and survivors: "Know that I believe you. This terrible thing did happen. You did nothing to deserve this. This is all the attacker's fault. This is NOT your fault. I'm sorry they chose to hurt you. And to all males reading this: there is absolutely NO evidence that sexual abuse of boys leads them to abuse others. That is a MYTH, and it needs to die. Also, yes, assault by a female is possible and does happen. You are not less of a man, or less innocent than female victims/survivors. I believe you. This isn't just a ‘women's issue.’ It's an issue for all humanity." She goes on, "You are not alone. So many have gone through this. So many have experienced healing from this trauma, also. But they have healed on their own time, in their own way. Grief is perfectly healthy."

Feeling discouraged? Today Tamara talks about the relationship between goals and hope, a personal story of healing, and one thing that makes her smile.
Feeling discouraged? Today Tamara talks about the relationship between goals and hope, a personal story of healing, and one thing that makes her smile. What Everyone Ought to Know About Rebuilding HopeLast week we had just a wonderful conversation with author Wendy Wilson Spooner (https://tamarakanderson.com/episodes/wendy-spooner-5-lessons-every-imperfect-family-should-know/) , and she talked a lot about family and how none of us grow up in perfect families. But she also talked about two points I would like to discus today: First, is the message of never giving up, never losing hope. The second message is that you can heal from these hard times. And these are powerful messages especially for what we are going through right now as citizens of planet Earth. Lives have changed because of COVID-19 or the Coronavirus. The Relationship Between Goals, Despair and HopeLast week I got to preview a book, Personality Isn't Permanent, that comes out in June from a friend of mine, Dr. Benjamin Hardy (https://benjaminhardy.com/) . He has a quote in this book which I want to share with you today. He said, "Research shows you cannot have hope without a goal."So you need to have goals so that you can have hope. Now this podcast is all about having hope. And I want to talk about loss of hope, dreams, and expectations which we are all experiencing right now. We've all had plans that have changed. We've had school change for children and parents. Life is not looking anything like we expected. And when this happens, there is a sense of loss. There is a sense of discouragement, loss of excitement, and loss of anticipation. If you are anything like me, you have started to feel a little down. I just want to let you know that this is completely normal. And that is because all these goals or expectations or dreams that we had are now gone. And so if you're feeling down and discouraged, because all those old dreams are gone. What to Do About Lost Hope and DreamsSo first pause right now and say, "It's okay. It's okay to grieve these lost dreams." Secondly, I want you to start using the creative powers of your brain. Start imagining a Plan B, a Plan C, or a Plan D. Start letting your imagination and your brain hope again. What would that look like? I have already told my husband that when all this Coronavirus stuff is over, I'm going to go to Disneyland. For me, Disneyland is a happy place (for my husband it is not a happy place). But that is something I am looking forward to with hope. Begin BrainstormingSo start imagining future plans, but I want you to also think of and start brainstorming things that you can do that bring you hope right now. Is there something you can rearrange in your room? So try to think of things that will bring you hope and joy. Because as Dr. Ben Hardy taught, "Research shows you cannot have hope without a goal." So I would love to invite you to set a goal today. Set a dream or an expectation to replace those broken ones. It doesn't have to be anything big, it can be small. And start there because setting a goal means rebuilding hope. And that is what we're all about right now we need to rebuild hope and it starts right in our own minds and in our own hearts. If you're having problems, thinking of things, call a friend, and brainstorm together. Maybe you can do something together when this is all said and done. Because it's fun to share that dream with somebody else. Ideas to Get Your Brainstorming StartedI'm going to give you a quick list of possibilities. Do an art project or painting. When we interviewed Wendy last week, we found out she was an artist. Have you ever done or wanted to do a painting? Now is your perfect opportunity. You can even order the supplies online. Do Genealogy or Record Family Stories. Wendy is also an avid genealogist. Have you ever looked at your family history? Try setting up a free account on Family Search....

Hand in Hand Parenting Podcast for Parents, Episode 17: Rebuilding Hope When We Are Shocked or Scared by World Events When shocking events or natural disasters leave us raw and overwhelmed parenting can feel tougher than usual. Today Abigail and Elle share Hand in Hand's ideas for caring well for ourselves and our children when events rock us. We talk about how much to share with our children about these events and why pulling together will be, in the end, what pulls us through. Lack of Control One feeling that's common following a shocking event is of losing control. This episode talks about the idea of focussing on the present moment with our children as a way to nourish and restore our sense of good and security in our immediate world. What To Expect of Ourselves and Our Kids Elle mentions the ways that shock and fear can play our for children in less obvious ways, in clinginess, defiance or bravado, and Abigail talks about how their behavior might trigger us because of the feelings we hold around an event. Making space to let them cry and heal, or to go a little gentler in these times can help, they decide. The podcast ends on a note of hope, with suggestions for pulling together as a family, rebuilding hope and closeness through action. As parents, we can be the change that stops events dividing people, Abigail says, a place we can listen to others even when we disagree. Rabbi Patricia Karlin-Neumann preached a sermon titled "Losing Heart… Rebuilding Hope” on July 30, 2017 at the Stanford Memorial Church. The readings for the sermon was Genesis 29: 15-28 and Lamentations 1:1-4.
Zerubbabel was the leader of 50,000 exiles returning from Babylon (A place of bondage), and he surveys the rebuilding of the temple. The Samaritans brought about an order from the Persian government to halt construction. Preoccupation with other personal demands on their lives and pressures that came from facing a time of radical change had drained their energies. Comparisons to stories of the glory of the former temple began to breed discouragement that they could never rebuild it as well, if at all. If we want to be in the perfect will of God where do we start? We start by the small beginning of thanking The Lord that we are in His will. (1Thessalonians 5:18)Å Zechariah 4:10 Do not despise this small beginning, for the eyes of the Lord rejoice to see the work begin. How do we start? God encouraged Zerubbabel to call upon His grace and the power of the Holy Spirit to get the work done. Zech 4:2-10 "What do you see now?" he asked. I answered, "I see a gold lampstand holding seven lamps, and at the top there is a reservoir for the olive oil that feeds the lamps, flowing into them through seven tubes. 3 And I see two olive trees carved upon the lampstand, one on each side of the reservoir. 4 What is it, sir?" I asked. "What does this mean?" 5 "Don't you really know?" the angel asked. "No, sir," I said, "I don't." 6 Then he said, "This is God's message to Zerubbabel: `Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty-- you will succeed because of my Spirit, though you are few and weak.' 7 Therefore no mountain, however high, can stand before Zerubbabel! For it will flatten out before him! And Zerubbabel will finish building this Temple with its capstone in its place shouting 'grace and thanksgiving' for God's mercy, declaring that all was done by grace alone." 8 Another message that I received from the Lord said: 9 "Zerubbabel laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. (Then you will know these messages are from God, the Lord Almighty.) 10 Do not despise this small beginning, for the eyes of the Lord rejoice to see the work begin, to see the plumbline in the hand of Zerubbabel. For these seven lamps represent the eyes of the Lord that see everywhere around the world." (TLB) Grace means that it is not our power but God's which moves obstacles. As individuals also, we are each a temple of the Lord. The Lord calls us to act to release His grace. Note the use of the plumbline or spirit level. This signifies simply getting started and measuring what had to be measured. There is our work in believing and there is God's work in achieving. Then the 'capstone' or finished state demonstrates a true and finished work. God will help us to work on one thing at a time. When time becomes an enemy in your mind then turn it into eternity through stillness. This depends on whether you value more the things of time than the things of eternity. The faithful work is ours – the supernatural work is God's. There is our work in believing and there is God's work in achieving. The Holy Spirit teaches us that whatever the enemy has done to destroy our faith, the Lord is able to recover, reclaim, restore, renew, rebuild out of what has been broken, and to bring restoration to our soul, to our character, to our life and future. God shares his will with your spiritual renewed mind but the natural mind demands its will of you which is the opposite to freedom or what we call free will. When the natural self will asserts its opposition to Gods will it is acting against its spiritually created true inner self. It even encourages you to oppose Gods will because it feels like it's missing out and not in control. The result is dissatisfaction and confusion in the soul. Gods will is free will because it is always loving and productive and totally without coercion. The reality is that you and God are one - of one spirit. So Gods will and your will are actually the same. The result is clarity and satisfaction in the soul.

Rebuilding Hope is a documentary film directed by Pulitzer Center journalist, Jen Marlowe. The film explores the experience of three Sudanese "Lost Boys" as they return to Sudan in 2007, 20 years after fleeing their homes to escape the Sudanese Civil War. Throughout the film, the young men assess their own hopes, dreams and fears as they return to their villages across Sudan, as well as those of the Southern Sudanese people nearly three years after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. They explore the connections between the conflict in South Sudan to the conflict in Darfur, probing the larger questions of identity and ethnicity in Sudan. The In-Depth Video Segments featured in this lesson plan are available, for free, online. Through this lesson, students can explore the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the conflicts in Darfur and South Sudan, the role of women and girls in Southern Sudan, and the challenges facing education and health care in South Sudan – all issues which persist today and will become more pressing as the South secedes in July 2011.
