Fructose and its byproduct uric acid may play a role in the development of Alzheimer's, thanks to an evolutionary adaptation hijacked by the modern diet. Fructose can be directly consumed, or the body can convert high-glycemic carbohydrates and other foods to fructose. Fructose suppresses some cognitive functions. Dr. Richard Johnson and Dr. Rob Lustig discuss a new study, of which Johnson was an author, on how fructose may be a potential driver in Alzheimer's, and they hypothesize about fructose's potential connection to the development of other conditions. Traditional soft drinks, juice boxes, and energy and sports drinks are loaded with high fructose corn syrup, an ingredient also found in many processed foods. The body processes fructose differently than other sugars, and fructose can lead to weight gain by encouraging the body to store energy. Dr. Richard Johnson and Dr. Dominic D'Agostino discuss the issues with fructose, how fructose can drive food cravings and overeating, how fructose might be an Alzheimer's contributor, and the potential benefits of a different sugar that might promote the release of GLP-1, the hormone that Ozempic and Wegovy help increase. On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by Kristin Johnson, Dr Keith Amoss, and Paul Clark to talk about the enigmatic topic of hope. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you've got hope then you don't have fear, and if you lose hope then fear immediately comes in and fills that void. I'm a career coach so I work with a lot of people who have just lost their jobs. They may well be very good at their profession, but when they arrive on my doorstep they are hopeless. One of the big problems with that is they associate hopelessness with uselessness. It's really important to re-instill the idea that it's not all finished, you're just in a bad spot. Let's be hopeful, because many other people have managed in the past, there's no reason why you can't. Hope has always got that outcome that, potentially, you're wishing for the best, but it just might not happen. Depending on the degree of your faith – and there is a difference – faith would say (if it's strong enough) everything will be OK. Hope is powerful. Victor Frankel, a psychologist in the Auschwitz concentration camp wrote Man's Search For Meaning, and what he did was observed the prisoners, those that gave up perished and those that had something to live for and a hope that they would be released back into the outside world and do what it was that they wanted to really do again. That kept them alive. It's incredibly powerful, not wishy-washy at all. I train a girl with severe mental health issues and she loves coming to the gym and I can see it in her; she hopes to do an event next year, she hopes to raise money for charity, she's hoping she can do these things to push past her mental health barrier. BEST MOMENTS‘When you say “hope” you assume it's a down and out feeling – where you need to find hope – but, if you hone in on hope it's a good thing'. ‘It does take some action, hope is not just sitting there and waiting'. ‘On British TV shows hope isn't the main factor in the characters' journeys, they're the underdog and remain the underdog and we laugh at that. On US TV shows 9/10 the underdog wins, they thrive off hope. This doesn't happen for British people'. ‘I was going to say the only expert on hop is Bob, but that would be showing my age!' Romaine Johnson asks society leaders Gaelyn Garrett, Seth Dailey and Ron Mitchell about why otolaryngology societies are worth joining, including addressing questions that young ENT's have about the value of a membership. --- EARN CME Reflect on how this Podcast applies to your day-to-day and earn AMA PRA Category 1 CMEs: https://earnc.me/XAOh9k --- SHOW NOTES In this episode of BackTable ENT, Dr. Gopi Shah and Dr. Johnson discuss the benefits and challenges of joining ENT societies in a panel discussion with Dr. Ron Mitchell (American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology), Dr. Gaelyn Garrett (Triological Society), and Dr. Seth Dailey (American Broncho-Esophagological Association). ENT societies can bring many professional opportunities to network and find mentorship outside of their own institutions. Society meetings can also advance research interests, as attendees can seek advice about research topics and find research funding and travel grants. Finally, ENT society members have a sense of belonging to a “tribe”, or a family of like-minded individuals who share the same goals for advancing their practice as well as community health. Nevertheless, as ENT societies grow in scale, there is potential for more challenges to develop. For example, younger members may feel that their voices are not being heard, as there can be a leadership-member gap at society meetings. Additionally, financial barriers and admission requirements may deter new members from joining. Finally, many ENT societies remain academically focused and seem irrelevant to community practitioners. --- RESOURCES American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology: https://aspo.us/ Triological Society: https://www.triological.org/ American Broncho-Esophagological Association: https://www.abea.net/

What do you suggest that leaders do with all the demands they’re being asked to manage? The responses from Charles, Darrell and Laurel are hopeful, wise and full of helpful reflection. Themes like abiding, revisiting your why, rediscovering the basics, and choosing patience are all discussed amongst many others. Blog | www.ccln.ca/season2/episode45 Website | www.ccln.ca
Dr. Lisa and Hannah are on a mission to help mamas and babies alike so that moms who, for multiple factors, cannot produce breast milk naturally, have an alternative for breast milk if that is what they desire over baby formula. A few years ago, when more and more data started coming out about the importance of specific diet for the tiniest babies, think premature babies with a very low birth weight (under three pounds) whose mothers were unable to lactate due to stress, premature birth, and various factors, donor breast milk was a safe and good alternative. While donor breast milk may lack a bit of the biological antibodies of biological mother's own milk, but it is still full of good nutrition. It is the preferred alternative to feeding formula to tiny premature baby as it could lead to life-threatening health complications. Breastmilk is full of healthy nutrients for the baby, be it your own or a donor's. For some reason, nowadays, a lot of women end up pumping and expressing their milk. Some benefits of feeding your baby breastmilk (yours or a donors), expressed, breastfed, or pumped include: A reduction in infectious diseases as they grow older. Decreased rates of ear infections and bloodstream infections, pneumonia urinary tract infection, meningitis, diarrhea, etc. It also decreases the rate of some other inflammatory diseases, even certain types of cancer. Here are a few takeaways from today's episode:

Throughout his career as a pediatrician and Medical Director, he has remained an advocate for children’s health issues. Over time, his servant leadership style led him to curtail clinical practice to become a change agent in the healthcare system. As a former President of the Medical Staff at an 8 hospital system in eastern Pennsylvania he worked with other leaders to promote children’s health and health equity in a highly matrixed environment. Doctor Jarret spent his post medical training in various fellowships ranging from the Disparities Leadership Program at Massachusetts General Hospital to the Cultural Competency Leadership Fellowship with the Health Research and Educational Trust. He has published in the medical literature and contributed to books primarily in the areas of general pediatrics, cultural competency and health equity. His book “Licensed to Live” demonstrates through faith, resilience, and perseverance, job titles are only temporary and simply a means to achieve greatness. His show, “Two ‘Sense’ Tuesdays with DoctorJarret” keeps him true to his pediatric roots engaging parents on his @DoctorJarret Facebook page. www.doctorjarret.com The Whitney E.
