Our recent release The Ride 2nd Gear presents motorcycles as motorcycles are meant to be: radical, stylish, subversive, raw. To celebrate our custom bike compendium, we invited builders from around the world—including Auto Fabrica, El Solitario, Wrenchmonkees, and many other workshops featured in The Ride 2nd Gear—to display their bikes in Gestalten Space. The show also included custom prints by Corpses From Hell and Death Spray Custom and Gestalten.tv was on the scene to catch all the excitement on camera. As founder and creative director of 5W Infographics and former art director of National Geographic Magazine from 2008 to 2014, Juan Velasco is one of the biggest names in information design today.While in Berlin last fall to lead a two-day Gestalten workshop, the data visualization expert sat down with Gestalten.tv to share his views on the difference between visual journalism and text-based reporting. In an interview with Gestalten.tv, editors of Berlin Wonderland: Wild Years Revisited 1990-1996, Anke Fesel and Chris Keller, set the scene and share some of the stories behind the rare images of a city that no longer exists in this form. In an image-saturated world, British collage artist John Stezaker rather creates more with less. Cutting up yesterday photographs, subtracting pieces, and juxtaposing faces, he transforms found photographs and forgotten postcards into symbolic portraiture of modernism. Stezaker’s artistic interests in examining hidden relations between images have bestowed international success and recognition upon him. We had a precious opportunity to speak with John Stezaker at his exhibition in Berlin’s Capitain Petzel Gallery.Featured in the celebrated group exhibition The Age of Collage, his topical work is now on display at Gestalten Space in Berlin until January 12, 2014. Infographic guru Nicholas Felton sets the pace for today’s data-based visual narratives through his ultra-detailed Personal Annual Reports and a substantial contribution to the Facebook timeline redesign. In the recent Gestalten workshop, participants were able to pick his brain and explore the fundamental methods of data gathering along with visual storytelling techniques. In his current exhibition SPLITTER at Gestalten Space, the young Berlin-based artist Clemens Behr creates site-specific works that are delightfully disorienting with their complex layers and improvised compositions. By laying with both construction and destruction, Behr raises questions about ephemerality and permanency, and in the same way, his installations facilitate a dialog between our perceptions in the second and third dimensions.
