Subsequently, he ventured to start his own retail company selling wireless phones and accessories. As president and CEO, he grew the business from a single store to over fifty locations, employing over 250 people across five states in just 10 years. Hit hard by the “Great Recession” of 2008, Breding fought back and successfully transitioned the business from direct distribution to a franchise-like model empowering entrepreneurs to own and operate their own wireless retail stores. After selling the wireless business in 2014, Robb's wife, Pam was diagnosed with breast cancer. The cancer battle that ensued lasted over two years and together he and Pam fought not only the cancer, but also phenomena and heart failure caused by chemotherapy. This life altering experience was a wakeup call for Breding and helped to solidify what has become his “WHY” in life. That is “To empower people to understand and fulfill their God given purpose!” Since then, Breding has founded REV Advisory Group to carry out this mission. Breding is also an active member of his community serving on the local advisory board for Hope International; he commits his time, treasure and talent to his local church and various non-profits; and is currently the chair of his Rotary Club's Leadership Development program. “Our inability to coexist in the looong range of emotions is unfortunate. We’ve told people that anxiety is not good. Actually, it serves us really well as human beings and we’ve needed a degree of anxiety to be able to function and evolve. There is GOOD anxiety that exists.” —Brooke Buys. In this episode, Brooke and I discuss mental health, the challenges and the stigmas in the “traditional” model and her innovative and personalized approach that is getting clients better results, faster. Brooke has over 20 years in the field with experience in clinical outpatient therapy, residential treatment, and school counseling. She created BLND as an alternative to traditional, one-size-fits-all wellness models, with the vision of offering personalized, authentic support that works in real life and drives real change. Brooke studied English at Kalamazoo College and received her Master’s Degree in Social Work from The University of Michigan. Currently Brooke is completing a Ph.D. in Social Work and Psychology with her research focused on gender responsive approaches to addiction. “These are some of the most globally recognized people on planet earth. They’ve openly admitted that some days they wake up and feel like everything is going to be taken away from them, and regardless of what they’ve achieved or accomplished, someone is going to realize that they’re not actually as good as they are.” —Scott Welle. In this solocast, I discuss a similarity amongst high achievers that is commonly present but rarely discussed: Imposter Syndrome. If you’ve ever felt like a fake, a fraud, lucky and not good, and unworthy of your accomplishments—this episode is for YOU. “Always in life, if you fixate on one outcome and you get it, you’re still left with something of an empty feeling of ‘what’s next.’ For me, it’s more about moving in the right direction and embracing the grind of that process.” —Daniel Campbell. In this episode, Daniel and I discuss his life-changing spinal cord injury when he was 20, the emotional toll of being told—statistically speaking—that he’d never walk again, his mindset that allowed him to stay positive and motivated during physical therapy, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, how he’s currently paying it forward with Renegait and “The Spartan,” a revolutionary way to bring gait training to the clinic or home for people in neurological rehabilitation. You can find out more about Daniel at https://renegait.com/. Show notes for this episode can be found at https://scottwelle.com/daniel-campbell and Daniel’s story is also below. Enjoy! Twelve days after my twentieth birthday I was at my fraternity’s house, spotted a good friend who used to wrestle as I did, and engaged him in an impromptu match. We had done it many times. I like to recall a time I ambushed him late at night leaving the library…I took him down, emptied his backpack on the grass, scattered everything, and ran for safety before he got up. He got me back by flipping a couch I was napping on a few days later. Brotherly love. This night, my neck broke. It wasn’t immediately clear to me upon hitting the wood floor that I had damaged my spinal cord, or that the trajectory of my life had jerked so far off the path. Not even remotely did I consider the possibility that that moment, that strange instant when the mental awareness of most of my body was replaced with a void, would completely change who I was, cause me to permanently re-engineer my identity. I collapsed. Hope was shone months later in the form of a physical therapist. She showed me around her clinic and discussed with me her treatment protocol. I would later learn she applies what is called “Activity-Based Therapy” principles. At the time, I only understood that she wanted to get me on my feet and walking. I had read that was a good idea, even for people having as little function as I did. Fast-forward 30 months, I’m stepping in a walker without anyone helping me. I’m stepping without help. I'm not overweight like so many others bound to a chair, my muscles are growing, my sensation improves every day, and my functional recovery is in stride. The day before I moved to Arizona, I set my personal record of walking 198 feet without help. Fast-forward another 6 months. I haven’t properly gait-trained since arriving in Phoenix. The clinic I go to doesn’t have a robotic machine to get me moving and can’t spare the manpower to assist me over the ground when my legs fatigue. My new best walking distance is about 20 feet. To end this regression, I started designing what would become the Spartan. I needed a cheap, simple tool that one person could strap on me and help me move my legs the correct way in a walker. The first prototype wasn’t pretty, but it worked. And one night, sitting in my room staring blankly at my engineering homework, it occurred to me…this problem I had, this problem I solved for myself, is so common. It was never my plan to be an entrepreneur, certainly not before I graduated, but a sense of duty overcame me at that time. Love for my fellow humans, compassion for those whose lives are as gnarled as mine, compelled me to create and establish ReneGait; to fundraise, and work full-time while simultaneously studying robotics engineering... full-time. I wouldn’t call myself the master of my fate (if that were the case I would be walking…actually, flying). But the victory I had, recovering what was lost, was enough. The momentum of that victory reshaped me for the better.
“If you look at the people that are not only high achieving but are also fulfilled, they’ve found a way to fall in love with the daily practice of becoming great AND of continuous improvement.” —Scott Welle. “The failure part of that year made it so much better and so much more memorable. Yes, winning the World Series was one of the greatest achievements ever, but I look back at HOW I got there, it was more satisfying to me than probably anyone else on the team.” —Brett Myers. In this episode, Brett and I discuss his Major League Baseball career and World Series win with the Phillies, the trials and tribulations he had to go through to get to that point, and the mental skills he’s taken from the Majors to excel is his new music career with his band, The Backwoods Rebels. I really enjoyed this wide-ranging discussion on performing under pressure and stepping outside of your comfort zone. After 12 seasons playing Major League Baseball, Brett Myers retired to his Florida hometown to be with his family. What baseball fans didn't realize, is for years Myers had been playing guitar and writing songs in the off-season. From the time he was a young boy, Myers always had a love for country, classic and hard rock. However, with his rigorous baseball schedule, he never had a chance to pursue songwriting in a serious manner. One day while playing golf, he shared some ideas with his musician friend and producer Damien Starkey (Puddle of Mudd, Burn Season), who was blown away by his clever concepts. The two began collaborating and crafting songs in Starkey's studio. Before long, it was undeniable that they had a great chemistry and the songs to prove it. Since then, Brett has collaborated with several heavy hitters in the industry including Colt Ford, The LACS and Bottleneck. In September of 2017 Brett released his 3rd album “Home Brewed”, a perfect blend of Southern Rock and Country anthems about drinking and life in the south. Myers has also been taking his show on the road with his band “The Backwoods Rebels.” This lineup includes former Shinedown and Fuel guitarist Jasin Todd, Puddle of Mudd guitarist and bassist Adam Latiff and Damien Starkey, Dylan Hess on drums and Zac Gilbert on slide. With the great response that the shows and albums have received, it is apparent that Myers continues to grow his fan base in both the Country and Southern Rock markets.
“If I can’t break through the wall the first time, just give me a thicker helmet and more rocket fuel and I’ll get through it the next time. And, through a lot of perseverance and hard work, I could do that…MOST of the time. But I was a mess.” —Bob Willbanks. In this episode, Bob and I discuss his powerful business and spiritual journeys and how he now integrates both in Ambassadors For Business (AFB), a Christian organization that connects faith values and work so we can grow together and change our communities from the inside out.
