The L-mount Alliance was formed in 2018. While there has been a steady release of cameras for this mount since then, considering the number of companies involved, it is a bit thin – especially for still photographers. With the recent announcement of the Leica SL3-S -- which feels like it's not the best value for the dollar in ways that go beyond even typical expectations of Leica cameras in the past-- we found ourselves asking: if you were coming in fresh to mirrorless and were thinking of investing in a system, is L-mount worth it over the alternatives? If not, why? What is missing? Chris Niccolls, Jordan Drake, and I dig into it. Today, Canon announced the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II – two highly anticipated cameras that say a lot about where the company stands on technology and, more importantly, how what it can provide photographers compares to its peers. Each camera alone is a big deal for Canon but together they mark what is arguably the most important launch for the company in the digital photography era -- it is unquestionably the most important launch for Canon since it moved to mirrorless. It was odd, then, that Canon gave US media so little time with the cameras. This week on The PetaPixel Podcast, Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake join me to go over all of the details about the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II that we weren't able to talk about when we got hands-on time with them a couple of weeks ago in Phoenix, Arizona. We weren't able to dedicate the time to doing things as we would typically for camera launches because Canon only provided us about two hours of shooting time. If we attempted to record all of this information on site, we wouldn't have had any time to evaluate the equipment. Beyond that, Canon wasn't able to provide concrete information to many of our questions in Phoenix. While we did eventually get final specifications this week, a lot was still missing. It doesn't seem like Canon wants to share everything and we'll have to get production units in hand to provide full information to everyone. So because of our limited time and because we didn't have enough information when we had the R1 and R5 Mark II in-hand, we focused our efforts on explaining the most important aspects of each camera with the anticipation that we would spend a lot more time discussing those features in a podcast format. Now that podcast is here, and we do our best to answer every question we think you might have about both cameras. Enjoy! When a listener asked Chris, Jordan, and Jaron to share how their careers (all the highs and lows) have gone over the years, the team decided it was worthy of a main story segment to itself. Speaking of creative journeys, OM SYSTEM has announced their last call for entries in their contest and community-based project Tell Your Story which is aimed at promoting and showcasing the capabilities of the OM SYSTEM OM-5 camera. Renowned for its class-leading performance and weather-sealed design capable of handling any environment, the OM-5 offers remarkable computational features such as Live ND and Starry Sky AF. Building upon the success of last year's initiative, Tell Your Story II strives to identify and empower emerging talents to advocate for OM SYSTEM products within their social communities. Through March 25th, 2024, photography enthusiasts of every skill level are invited to participate in Tell Your Story II. The project will be showcased on Instagram, on the @omsystem.generation channel. Candidates selected for Tell Your Story II will receive support from OM SYSTEM, including the OM-5 camera, lenses, and mentorship by esteemed OM SYSTEM Ambassadors, including Brooke Bartleson and Peter Baumgarten, to bring their projects to life. Details about the program and how to participate can be found at explore.omsystem.com/petapixel. Did you know that Chris Niccolls was very disinterested in photography for most of his young life? Did you know that Jordan Drake used the money from a canceled trip to Europe to buy a video camera, forever changing the course of his career? Read Emilie's tips today on PetaPixel and check out the full line of OM SYSTEM cameras and lenses by visiting explore.omsystem.com/petapixel. As PetaPixel closed the door on 2023 and looked forward into 2024, it published multiple stories that looked back on how the major manufacturers fared in the past 365, grading each on what they were able to produce for enthusiasts on a classic scale of A through F. Using those as a springboard, Chris Niccolls, Jordan Drake, and Jaron Schneider offer their own input on how these companies did in the last year, highlighting what they did well, what could have been done better, and what each company needs to do in the year ahead to impress. Make sure you check out PetaPixel's grades on Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, the L-Mount Alliance, Micro Four Thirds, and the best of the rest to follow along with The PetaPixel Podcast team. We use Riverside to record The PetaPixel Podcast in our online recording studio. We hope you enjoy the podcast and we look forward to hearing what you think. While Chris, Jordan, and Jaron all have their opinions on the most impactful technology of 2023, Stalman has his own top list that's worth calling out. He explains why Apple's M-series chips are worth the hype, what he hopes to see from Canon in the next year after its very quiet 2023, and why he is finding himself using the iPhone for video more than ever before. Check out Tyler's latest video and don't miss his podcast either (it's great). We use Riverside to record The PetaPixel Podcast in our online recording studio. We would like to thank the PetaPixel podcast sponsor, OM SYSTEM! Get ready to celebrate the holidays with huge seasonal savings on OM SYSTEM cameras, lenses and more! Holiday promotions begin this Thursday, November 16th. Visit explore.omsystem.com/petapixel for the complete list of savings! It's been a busy week in the photography world, highlighted by the launch of the Sony a9 III. As the first full-frame CMOS sensor camera with a global shutter made for photography, we had to ask: is this the start of widespread adoption of the tech? Beyond the wider implications of global shutters, Chris Niccolls, Jordan Drake, and Jaron Schneider answer some of your biggest questions about Sony's new sensor technology including how it performs at high ISOs (and low ISOs), what problems beyond rolling shutter are actually solved by a global shutter sensor, who the camera will be best for, what some of the downsides of the camera are, and more. It's also been a very eventful week outside of Sony, including an update from the CEWE Photo Awards, another dramatic turn in the SanDisk Portable SSD saga, and the classic episodes of DigitalRev featuring Kai Wong have been taken offline. All this and more in this very packed episode of The PetaPixel Podcast! Note and clarification from last week's episode: Reuters and AP are both members of the Content Authenticity Initiative, our apologies for saying they were not. Camera resolution is easy, right? More pixels, more quality, more options, more better! But as soon as you start digging into it, from the iPhone 14 Pro's 48 megapixels to Sony sensors with 60 megapixels, all sorts of considerations make themselves known. Chris Niccolls has been reviewing cameras and camera systems on YouTube for years now. If the system exits, there's a pretty solid chance he's not only had his hands on it, but he's been able to run it through it's paces and created a video about it. This is what Chris does; he learns about the tech, the features, and the capabilities of the entire camera system as a whole so YOU, the viewer, can decide whether or not it's going to work for you or not. This is exactly why I wanted to talk to Chris. To hear from his perspective what is important in a camera system and how to choose one of your own for backcountry adventuring. If you're into photography or videography and you're searching for a system to call your own, this episode should no doubt help you on your search.By Land,Emory R. Chris is a teacher, presenter, and host of DPReview TV. He got his start on YouTube hosting the Camera Store TV channel along with his colleague Jordan Drake (ep. 62) over ten years ago. Now Chris balances a full-time job working for DP Review with his love of fly fishing and raising 3 kids. If you have ever searched for a camera on YouTube, chances are you have seen Jordan Drake's work. Jordan’s background is in traditional filmmaking as a cinematographer, but roughly 10 years ago, along with his college Chris Niccolls, he started a YouTube channel for Calgary's largest camera store, The Camera Store. They grew a following of over 300,000 subscribers on their channel; CameraStoreTV and were one of the few camera review YouTube channels at the time, which paved the way for gear based content for years to come. In the last two years, Jordan has transitioned to DPReview where he shoots, edits, and stars in that gear review YouTube channel alongside Chris Niccolls. Jordan's most recent work in cinematography includes the short film: "A Walk Down To Water" which can be viewed in the show notes below.Watch the Short Film "A Walk Down To Water": https://filmshortage.com/dailyshortpicks/a-walk-down-to-waterDPReview YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/dpreviewFollow Jordan Drake: https://twitter.com/thatJordanDrake

Being a camera gear geek, I was delighted to interview Chris Niccolls (interview starts at 47:16) of DP Review TV. (If you are also a camera geek, you probably read DP Review regularly.) Chis is a photography teacher as well as a video star, has worked in camera shops, and currently works in a fly shop in Calgary. In the interview, he gives some fantastic tips on how to take better fish and fishing pictures in both the video and still formats. He also suggests some brands and models of phones, cameras, and drones that he feels are best suited for fishing photography. I know I learned a whole mess of new tricks for taking better fishing pictures, and I am sure you will, too. In the Fly Box, we cover plenty of topics that may help answer questions you have had about fly fishing: Should I get a 6½-foot or 7½-foot rod for small streams? What weight line is best, and should I get a Double Taper or Weight Forward line? Do you carry a small seine with you when trout fishing? How many wind knots should I expect in a day of fishing? I fish for salmon and stripers. Should I get a full-sinking or sinking-tip line in addition to my floating line? How do you travel with fly rods? Do you carry them on or check them? Would a 12-foot, 6-inch two-handed rod be OK for both stripers and smallmouths? What do you think offly clips? Should I use nylon or Fluorocarbon tippets for dries and nymphs? I have lost my passion for fly fishing. Does this ever happen to you? A suggestion from a listener on targeting white bass in Texas on their spawning runs If I only had one type of line for stripers, bass, and pike because of expense, what line should I buy? Do you have any suggestions for catching stocked trout when the spin guys are catching tons of them using corn as bait? Is there a big difference between the Battenkill IV Spey and Battenkill IV disc? Is there an advantage to using a rotary vise? How long does it take trout eggs to hatch?

Bill sits down with DPReview's Chris Niccolls for a one-on-one interview about the future of film cameras. Chris Niccolls has made hundreds of YouTube videos reviewing the hottest cameras on the market. We learn how Chris first started in photography and now is the face for one of the largest organizations for photographic equipment reviewing. He offers his insight of cottage industries like Reflex and Japan Camera Hunter filling a void left by camera typhoons like Canon and Nikon.
Jordan Drake and Chris Niccols, formerly of The Camera Store TV and now stars of the DPReview YouTube channel, join me to talk about shooting photos and videos at the same time, on the same camera. Special Guests: Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake.
Choosing a camera is not only hard because there are a ton of options out there, there's also a ton of GREAT options. All the big camera manufacturers are making great products but they still have specific strengths and weaknesses depending on what your photographic needs are. To dive into this in extreme detail I sat down with Chris Niccolls from The Camera Store (http://www.thecamerastore.com) in Calgary, or as you probably know him, host of The Camera Store TV (https://www.youtube.com/thecamerastoretv). I'm pretty familiar with the cameras I own, but TCSTV put every camera through serious real world tests, so I always look to their opinion before I buy a new camera. Entry Budget If you're moving up from a phone to camera for the first time you probably don't want to spend too much until you figure out if this hobby is going to last or not. A few years back it was easy to spot the lower image quality from a cheaper camera, but thats no longer the case. A few hundred bucks can buy most of the image quality you would find in the gear pros use. As you spend more the difference of image quality starts to be smaller, and lot of what you're paying for is improved usability, for example autofocus and ergonomics. But if you buy the Nikon D3400, Canon T6i or Sony A6000 you can take photos that no one will know aren't coming out of a $10,000 system. Compact Cameras Smart phones have sucked all the air out of the room for smaller format cameras, but they still have their place. If a big camera feels like too much of burden, you can still get a slight quality boost over your phone with little pocket size cameras like the Panasonic ZS100, Canon G5X or Sony RX100 IV. Because of their small sensor size, they can more easily offer a bigger zoom range that's harder to achieve with larger sensor cameras, great video quality, image stabilization and raw support. Micro Four Thirds This in-between sensor size has really come in to it's own lately, with minimal trade offs in quality and huge advantages in cost and camera size. The only things you're really giving up are extreme low light performance (although that's changing with the Panasonic GH5S) and you'll have a harder time getting bokelicious blurry backgrounds. Check out the Panasonic GH5, Olympus or Fuji XT20 to name only a few of this versatile format. APS-C A lot of people look down on any sensor that is smaller than full frame, but don't forget that many hollywood films are shot on almost example this size of sensor/film, but the cinema version is Super35, which is obviously a way cooler name. In this category image quality is getting close to the plateau, with tons of dynamic range, impressive low light performance and a more affordable selection of lenses than it's bigger brother, full frame. Some cameras to look at are the Canon 80D, Nikon D500 and Sony A6500, which have different strengths but will all make your photography look professional. Full Frame 35mm is most commonly used format for professionals of all time. This is the size of the film you used growing up, it what most of the top of the line lenses are optimized for, and I promise you will love shooting on it. You'll notice a bump in quality from APS-C when you compare dynamic range and low light noise, but let's be honest. You probably want it to get a sexy blur in the background. Every brand has an affordable way to get started, just a buy a 50mm from Canon, Nikon, Sony, or whatever brand you go with and open that aperture wide. If sharp critical focus is important to you try a long lens, like the venerable 70-200mm. I have a lot to say about camera in this range, since that's typically what I buy, but for now I will just direct you to the Canon 5D IV, Nikon D850, Sony A7RIII and Leica M10. You can get lost all day researching these beautiful machines. That's it You've got your work ahead of you! I just pointed you in a few directions, but now the fun part is scoring the internet for reviews, samples, and tests to find exactly the right match for you. I strongly recommend DPReview for their incredibly in depth camera reviews, and for lenses go to ImagingResource where they do really helpful comparisons. Special Guest: Chris Niccolls.
