Today's guest is a writer, director, producer, actor, and indie filmmaking legend, Edward Burns. Many of you might have heard of the Sundance Film Festival-winning film called The Brothers McMullen, his iconic first film that tells the story of three Irish Catholic brothers from Long Island who struggle to deal with love, marriage, and infidelity. His Cinderella story of making the film, getting into Sundance, and launching his career is the stuff of legend. The Brothers McMullen was sold to Fox Searchlight and went on to make over $10 million at the box office on a $27,000 budget, making it one of the most successful indie films of the decade.Ed went off to star in huge films like Saving Private Ryan for Steven Spielberg and direct studio films like the box office hit She's The One. The films about the love life of two brothers, Mickey and Francis, interconnect as Francis cheats on his wife with Mickey's ex-girlfriend, while Mickey impulsively marries a stranger.Even after his mainstream success as an actor, writer, and director he still never forgot his indie roots. He continued to quietly produce completely independent feature films on really low budgets. How low, how about $9000. As with any smart filmmaker, Ed has continued to not only produce films but to consider new methods of getting his projects to the world. In 2007, he teamed up with Apple iTunes to release an exclusive film Purple Violets. It was a sign of the times that the director was branching out to new methods of release for his projects. In addition, he also continued to release works with his signature tried-and-true method of filmmaking. Using a very small $25,000 budget and a lot of resourcefulness, Burns created Nice Guy Johnny in 2010.Johnny Rizzo is about to trade his dream job in talk radio for some snooze-Ville gig that'll pay enough to please his fiancée. Enter Uncle Terry, a rascally womanizer set on turning a weekend in the Hamptons into an eye-opening fling for his nephew. Nice Guy Johnny's not interested, of course, but then he meets the lovely Brooke, who challenges Johnny to make the toughest decision of his life. The film debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. While he was releasing that film, Burns wrote, starred, and directed Newlyweds. He filmed this on a small Canon 5D camera in only 12 days and on a budget of only $9,000. Newlyweds Buzzy and Katie find their blissful life disrupted by the arrival of his half-sister and news of her sister's marriage troubles. In his book, Independent Ed: Inside a Career of Big Dreams, Little Movies, and the Twelve Best Days of My Life (which I recommend ALL filmmakers read), Ed mentions some rules he dubbed “McMullen 2.0” which were basically a set of rules for independent filmmakers to shoot by.Actors would have to work for virtually nothing. The film should take no longer than 12 days to film and get into the canDon't shoot with any more than a three-man crewActor's use their own clothesActors do their own hair and make-upAsk and beg for any locationsUse the resources you have at your disposalI used similar rules when I shot my feature films This is Meg, which I shot that in 8 days, and On the Corner of Ego and Desire which I shot in 4 days.  To be honest, Ed was one of my main inspirations when I decided to make my first micro-budget feature film, along with Mark and Jay Duplass, Joe Swanberg, and Michael and Mark Polish. Ed has continued to have an amazing career directing films like The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, The Groomsmen, Looking for Kitty, Ash Wednesday, Sidewalks of New York, No Looking Back, and many more.Ed jumped into television with the Spielberg-produced TNT drama Public Morals, where he wrote, directed, and starred in every episode.Set in the early 1960s in New York City's Public Morals Division, where cops walk the line between morality and criminality as the temptations that come from dealing with all kinds of vice can get the better of them. His latest project is EPIX's Bridge and Tunnel is a dramedy series set in 1980 that revolves around a group of recent college grads setting out to pursue their dreams in Manhattan while still clinging to the familiarity of their working-class Long Island hometown. He also pulls writing, producing, and directing duties for all the episodes.Ed has continued to give back to the indie film community with his amazing book, lectures and his knowledge bomb packed director commentaries. Trust me to go out and buy the DVD versions of all his films. His commentaries are worth the price of admission. When I first spoke to Ed he told me that he had been a fan of the podcast for a while. As you can imagine I was floored and humbled at the same time. Getting to sit down and speak to a filmmaker that had such an impact on my own directing career was a dream come true. Ed is an inspiration to so many indie filmmakers around the world and I'm honored to bring this epic conversation to all of you. Please enjoy my conversation with Edward Burns.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

Wendy Bagnall is a landscape photographer based the south of England who's work was recently shown at the 2022 Royal Academy of Arts summer exhibition. Wendy's work is unrestricted and playful and she uses different techniques to interpret the landscape, creating images that to evoke an emotional connection with the viewer.  Wendy got her first camera as a child but she went deeper into her photography during the pandemic when forced isolation gave her the opportunity to build a relationship with the landscape in her local area and fast-tracked her development as a photographer. Wendy is one of my favourite landscape photographers right now and this is definitely one of my favourite conversations I've had on the podcast. With a camera in his hand, Harvey Stein owns the streets, having spent the past 50 years capturing quintessential moments and making sensitive portraits of the people he meets there. In this two-part episode, he shares details about his photographic process while also conveying the wisdom he's acquired in publishing 10 books of photographs. We first caught up with Stein at the 2022 B&H OPTIC Conference in June, where he spoke about his newest book Coney Island People: 50 Years. He describes his interactive approach to street photography by traveling near and far in search of the human animal. Although he packs a Canon 5D for foreign locales where vibrant colors can be an important element, Stein is most at home with his Leica M4, a 21 mm lens, and a finder that lets him maintain visual contact with his subjects. We also learn about his Manhattan darkroom, and all the money he's saved by rolling his own film for all these years. In addition to his substantial photography chops, Stein is also an expert in photo book publishing. To leave no stone unturned, we continue our conversation in the studio after a break. Stay to the end for insights about working with publishers, including pitfalls to avoid and tips for turning your own photo project into book form. Our conversation covers how Scott creates photographs the FEEL the way a room feels, as well as really digging into some of the nuances of how he works like the importance of including a human element, chiaroscuro, visual acoustics and why he carries a makeup mirror with him at all times. We have made it to 450 episodes of the Indie Film Hustle Podcast. The IFH Tribe has given me 450 opportunities to serve them and for that I am humbled. Thank you all for allowing me to do what I love to do so much. With that said I wanted to bring you a massive guest for this remarkable milestone. Today’s guest is a writer, director, producer, actor and indie filmmaking legend Edward Burns. Many of you might have heard of the Sundance Film Festival winning film called The Brothers McMullen, his iconic first film that tells the story of three Irish Catholic brothers from Long Island who struggle to deal with love, marriage, and infidelity. His cinderella story of making the film, getting into Sundance and launching his career is the stuff of legend. The Brothers McMullen was sold to Fox Searchlight and went on to make over $10 million at the box office on a $27,000 budget, making it one of the most successful indie films of the decade.Ed went off to star in huge films like Saving Private Ryan for Steven Spielberg and direct studio films like the box office hit She’s The One. The films about the love lives of two brothers, Mickey and Francis, interconnect as Francis cheats on his wife with Mickey’s ex-girlfriend, while Mickey impulsively marries a stranger.Even after his mainstream success as an actor, writer and director he still never forgot his indie roots. Using a very small $25,000 budget and a lot of resourcefulness, Burns created Nice Guy Johnny in 2010.Johnny Rizzo is about to trade his dream job in talk radio for some snooze-ville gig that’ll pay enough to please his fiancée. Enter Uncle Terry, a rascally womanizer set on turning a weekend in the Hamptons into an eye-opening fling for his nephew. Nice Guy Johnny’s not interested, of course, but then he meets the lovely Brooke, who challenges Johnny to make the toughest decision of his life. The film debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. While he was releasing that film, Burns wrote, starred and directed Newlyweds. He filmed this on a small Canon 5D camera in only 12 days and on a budget of only $9,000. Newlyweds Buzzy and Katie find their blissful life disrupted by the arrival of his half-sister and news of her sister’s marriage troubles. The film should take no longer than 12 days to film and get into the canDon’t shoot with any more than a three-man crewActor’s use their own clothesActors do their own hair and make-upAsk and beg for any locationsUse the resources you have at your disposalI used similar rules when I shot my feature films This is Meg, which I shot that in 8 days and On the Corner of Ego and Desire which I shot in 4 days. To be honest Ed was one of my main inspirations when I decided to make my first micro-budget feature film, along with Mark and Jay Duplass, Joe Swanberg and Michael and Mark Polish. Ed has continued to have an amazing career directing films like The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, The Groomsmen, Looking for Kitty, Ash Wednesday, Sidewalks of New York, No Looking Back and many more.Ed jumped into television with the Spielberg produced TNT drama Public Morals, where he wrote, directed and starred in every episode.Set in the early 1960s in New York City’s Public Morals Division, where cops walk the line between morality and criminality as the temptations that come from dealing with all kinds of vice can get the better of them. His latest project is EPIX’s Bridge and Tunnel is a dramedy series set in 1980 that revolves around a group of recent college grads setting out to pursue their dreams in Manhattan while still clinging to the familiarity of their working-class Long Island hometown. He also pulls writing, producing and directing duties for all the episodes.Ed has continued to give back to the indie film community with his amazing book, lectures and his knowledge bomb packed director commentaries. Trust me go out and buy the DVD versions of all his films. His commentaries are worth the price of admission. When I first spoke to Ed he told that he had been a fan of the podcast for a while. As you can imagine I was floored and humbled at the same time. Getting to sit-down and speak to a filmmaker that had such an impact my own directing career was a dream come true. Ed is an inspiration to so many indie filmmakers around the world and I’m honored to bring this epic conversation to the tribe.Enjoy my conversation with Edward Burns.

Today on the show I have Brendan Leonard, who you may also know as Semi-Rad from his popular and hilarious long-running blog by the same name. Brendan is one of those outdoor and adventure creatives who kinda does it all. He's a columnist and contributing editor for Outside Magazine and Adventure Journal respectively, he crafts stories and even produces and shoots his own films, and creates humorous cartoons depicting relatable everyday shit we all go through as human beings and outdoor enthusiasts. What I like most about Brendan and his work, is his ethos (which perhaps not surprisingly as a writer Brendan articulates best). He says: "I created my blog Semi-Rad.com as a channel for those of us who aren't elite climbers, skiers, ultra runners, and alpinists - the folks who love to get out there, but maybe don't take it or themselves too seriously. Semi-Rad is enthusiasm for things regular people can do, adventures for the everyman and woman. It's a website for those of us crushing it, kind of.” That is to say that Brendan believes in the democratization of adventure. You don't need to be climbing 5.14 or kayaking class V whitewater or medaling at your next mountain ultra. Instead as Brendan says, we simply 'need to spend more time doing things we love, going to places that make us feel small, remembering to laugh at ourselves, and getting a little cold, tired, and scared every once in a while.” I couldn't agree more Brendan.   Show resources: Semi-Rad (Brendan's) blog New book coming out! “Bears Don't Care About Your Problems” The Art of Getting Lost and other books by Brendan Guide to Peak Bagging Films by Brendan Leonard Blog post about releasing a book Mountaineer's books Between the Covers - bookstore in in Telluride, CO Mountain Film (film festival) 5Point Adventure Film Festival Banff Mountain Film Platforms for creating books: Lightning Source, Ingrim Spark, Create Space The Dirtbag Diaries (great podcast by Fitz Cahall of Duct Tape Then Beer) Adventure Journal - Steve Casmiro (editor) Patreon Outdoor Research (brand partner) Forest Woodward - Film Maker Seth Godin - Marketing thought leader Canon 5D (recommended camera)   Show topics/themes: Self publishing— the pros and cons of doing it yourself, marketing yourself, and finding the balance when making deals with publishers The path to sobriety from addiction Keeping up a blog— making a commitment, being patient, and practicing determination The writing process: anyone can be a writer, just not everyone sticks with it. the difference is actually sitting down and doing the work. With writing, filming, or creating anything, you have to REALLY believe that you have something to say. Have you Seen this new OM-D E-M1X by Olympus. Holy cow. I’m loving this camera. Let’s look at some of the details. They claim “extensive weather sealing” which sounds like they’re really upping the weather sealing game. I love it. Rain, sleet or snow, they claim it can handle it with ease. That’s awesome. Some Specs: 20.4 MP 4/3 sensor 4K video recording, with “live ND” to mimic the effects of a solid ND filter, nice. 7-stop shake reduction, or 7.5 with the new 12-100mm lens. The integrated grip will hold two batteries. It can shoot up to 120 frames per second in HD video mode. Both SD card slots are UHS-II compatible, which is nice when shooting all those frames per second or 4K video. Also includes a PC flash terminal, headphone and mic ports, as well as micro HDMI. And a USB-C port that can be used to charge both batteries in camera.  WiFi and Bluetooth are supported for connecting to the smartphones. Includes 121 Phase Detection AF points, and 121 contrast detect areas for AF as well.  It also has “Intelligent Subject Detection AF” which they make it sound like it’ll learn the shape of what you’re shooting and it will prioritize focus on that. That’s amazing. It also has face detect and eye detection as well. And it’ll work down to -6EV which is very dark indeed. If you use the electronic shutter, you can get 60fps shooting, or 15fps using the mechanical shutter. If you want to use the electronic shutter and maintain full AF, you’ll be “limited” (a couple of air quotes there) to 18fps. The buffer holds a varying amount of shots depending on how fast you’re shooting. If in manual focus and shooting 60fps, you’ll fill the buffer at 49 shots, that’s less than a second. Did I mention it has dual UHS-II SD card slots? You’re gonna need it! If you’re at the 15fps, you fill it up at 103 frames, so that’s almost 7 full seconds there. Either way you shoot, it’s impressive. This part really interests me, the multi-shot HighRes mode. It’ll create an 80MP Raw image by using the IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization) system to nudge the sensor to different positions to capture the space between the pixels. It does this by taking 8 frames very quickly and then combining them in camera.  Then there’s the hand-held mode, where it does the same thing with 16 total frames, but it only makes a 50MP image. Still, I’m loving the sound of this technology. The so-called limitations of the 4/3s sensor are all but eliminated now.  It has the live composite mode which will build up a scene over time such as star trails.  It also does in camera focus stacking.  OK, just take my money already!!! I love this camera. Along with this camera they have also announced the 150-400 f/4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO lens.  This is a 300-800 equivalent length on a full-frame body, and it has a built in 1.25x extender. It can also be paired with a new 2x extender which would give you a 2000mm in full-frame speak. And they claim you can shoot it hand held due to the combination of the IBIS and the lens’ own stabilization.  I would love to try this out. Olympus, if you’re listening, I’m here for you to put this through the paces. I’ll go shoot eagles or something like that with this setup. That would be so amazing. They’ve already got a few really good lenses out there, the 7-14mm, 12-40 and 40-150 all look like my kind of lenses.  I don’t know about you, but the Olympus line-up has suddenly gotten awesome, at least in my opinion anyway. Sony A6400 Have you also seen that new Sony 6400? I won’t go into all the spec details, but that too is an impressive camera. I love the compact nature, the APS-C sized sensor and lens lineup. If I were to switch to Sony I’d give this on a serious look. In fact I’m actually considering buying this one. If Olympus releases a not-so-over-the-top option of that latest OM-D model then I might be tempted to go that route. One thing is for sure, we have so many good options in gear these days. OK, now on to the images, and revisiting the idea of shooting abstracts, or abstractions once again. I won’t be writing as much in the show notes as I did on the previous episode. I’ll just talk a bit more conversationally about these. Plants, Prague Castle. Notes: I was initially intrigued by these plants, but as I was shooting I felt they could use something more. So I decided to put the camera into manual focus and completely blur out the subject, making a beautiful bouquet of color. I then punched color saturation in post to achieve the affect I was going for. I also had adjusted the exposure to +1 when I took the shot to give it a bit more oomph. B&W Buildings, Boston, MA Boston, MA, USA Notes: I like to isolate the graphic forms and enhance the lines. By zooming in to the subject like this I’m able to eliminate any distractions that might take us away from the subject. Also, by removing the color, I’m able to keep the attention on the shape and form of the building and the glass frames rather than get distracted by the cool color and cloud shapes. Without color, the cloud textures become part of the building more. Also, for the second image I tilted the camera a bit so the side of the building would align with the edge of the frame. Doing so makes the building’s angles even more dramatic and it has some strength leaning up against the side like this where if I didn’t turn the camera on angle, it would feel really balanced, but not as strong. Segmentation series images. I love this series. By shooting the subject in segments I’m able to make a different statement than is normally made. With the yellow leaves, I was able to make it feel like separate pictures laying on top of each other, while still really enjoying the contrast of the lines, the brilliant color of the leaves and the strength of the trunk. But by limiting the view the eye is focused on the specific items that I wanted to highlight and draw the attention too, and other distractions were eliminated. For the black and white option here, the main subject is captured in those three images. They are very nearly evenly spaced and the texture is enhanced by the absence of color, and a little more clarity in Lightroom. The two additional frames in this set are to support and balance the composition overall. It’s important that these extra elements be shown there so we get a greater sense of place, but they are placed behind so as not to overly take away from the main subject. With the twin sisters shot, I really like it because it emphasizes the clouds. This composition works by itself, but I found it a bit boring. But I knew I wanted to bring those clouds in somehow, and with the angled shots and a segmentation I knew I had something good going here. The composition remains simple yet there’s added strength to it because we get to have more of those clouds, but they still aren’t complete. That’s one of the great things about photography, when we crop an element the mind must work to complete it in its imagination. With this type of shot the mind gets an initial look, then it gets more with the added frames and we still don’t complete the clouds so our impression of the magnitude of the clouds is rather enhanced. Grass image I love the simplicity and complexity of this image all at the same time. It’s simple because the depth-of-field is so shallow. It’s complex because the grass blades are going everywhere and they feel rather chaotic. The monochromatic color is also enhancing the idea of simplicity. Raining cottonwoods US, OR, Morrow County. Poplar Trees at the Boardman Tree farm. NR US, OR, Morrow County. Poplar Trees at the Boardman Tree farm. NR I love doing camera movement images. With this set I started out with the camera mounted to a gimbal head and a 50mm lens. I used the gimbal head to restrict the movement to one axis. With a bit of practice I got it working quite nicely. The exposure is about .8 seconds to begin with, and then I get to 1 second for the last two images. For the second to last image I sent on two axis, and the result is a feeling of motion to the side, and it contrasts with the position and direction of the trunks. It’s truly an amazing feeling looking at this image in full resolution. The final image has me hand-holding and twisting. I must have tried this 15 or more times before I got the one that really worked and was what I was looking for. The off-center point of rotation gives it a good sense of balance that’s not perfectly symmetrical. I also appreciate the added movement on the far left side of the image due to the off-center rotation point. Palouse field forms US, WA, Whitman County, Views from Steptoe Butte. The Palouse region is simply amazing. It’s also extremely popular with photographers. With a long tele lens you’re able to really pull out some great shapes, colors and forms from atop Steptoe Butte. If you get there about an hour before sunset you’re probably too late. So get there a bit earlier if you can. Then you can watch the transition of the forms and shadows as they elongate with the setting sun. If you can get a clear day you’re in luck. Sometimes it’s too hazy to get a good shot since you’re shooting subjects that are so far away. Stacked Waves I was testing two lenses and this shot is with the Sigma 150-600 Sport on my Canon 5D mkiv. I decided on a B&W conversion to enhance the effect of the deep tonality of the waves and the brilliant mist that is being blown off the top of the waves. The loan gull makes the shot really sing for me. I got some shots that have more birds, but in the spirit of abstracts and abstractions, this better fits the bill. Palouse Falls thundering water detail Palouse Falls state park is a great place to shoot. Just please be careful. The cliff is very high and the falls are 198 ft high as well. It can be dangerous if you’re not careful. For these shots I was at the top of the rim zooming down. I wanted to capture the energy of the water crashing down into the pool. The water in spring time is quite muddy, so I enhanced the contrast on these images and used a fast shutter speed to freeze the action. Clouds lit rom within Nature has some amazing gifts for us photographers. With this shot I was chasing a storm here in SE Washington. It was moving fast so I did more driving than shooting. I finally got ahead of it enough with a place that I could safely set up and shoot. But as it moved away the lightning was largely on the interior of the clouds, which enhanced the texture of the clouds. Being lit from within also makes for added drama with the foreground clouds. Sun spots The sun is possible to shoot with a 100–400 zoomed out to 400 with a 2x extender. I also used a 10-stop neutral density filter. I used that filter rather than a solar filter so I could render the sunspots. With a standard solar filter you don’t get enough detail to see the sunspots like this. Reminders I’ve got some workshops coming up this summer.  Shoot-n-Print in Walla Walla Total Solar Eclipse in Chile,  Composition, Culture and more in Croatia.

How to Make a $9000 Feature Film with Ed BurnsMany of you might have heard of the Sundance Film Festival winning film called The Brothers McMullen written and directed by Edward Burns. Burns went off to star in huge films like Saving Private Ryan and direct studio films like She's the One but what you might not know is he has been quietly making completely independent films on really low budgets. How low, how about $9000. As with any smart filmmaker, Ed Burns has continued to not only produce films but to consider new methods of getting his projects to the world. In 2007, he teamed up with Apple iTunes to release an exclusive film “Purple Violets”. It was a sign of the times that the director was branching out to new methods of release for his projects. In addition, he also continued to release works with his signature tried-and-true method of filmmaking. Using a very small $25,000 budget and a lot of resourcefulness, Burns created “Nice Guy Johnny” in 2010. Again- he was the writer and director. This is a formula that may intimidate a lesser performer, but he has proven that it works perfectly for his abilities. The film “Nice Guy Johnny” was released at the Tribeca Film Festival. While he was releasing that film, Burns wrote “Newlyweds”, another film he directed and starred in. He filmed this on a small Canon 5D camera in only 12 days and on a budget of only $9,000.In his book Independent Ed (which I recommend ALL filmmakers read), Ed Burns mentions some rules he dubbed “McMullen 2.0” which were basically a set of rules for independent filmmakers to shoot by.Actors would have to work for virtually nothing. The film should take no longer than 12 days to filmDon’t shoot with any more than a three man crewActor's use their own clothesActor's do their own hair and make-upAsk and beg for any locationsUse the resources you have at your disposalI used similar rules when I shot my feature film "This is Meg". I shot that in 8 days. Take a listen to this episode and prepare to get inspired. After you listen take a read of the making of The Brothers McMullen and read Independent Ed. You won't regret it.Also, Ed Burns' DVD director's commentaries are indie filmmaking gold. He really shares his methods and all of his secret sauce. The DVD are direct cheap and well work getting. I'll put a list of them below. You won't regret it.

The Sony A7s: http://amzn.to/2mn3fnA My Camera Gear- http://bit.ly/jordankit It finally happened: We got our hands on the Sony A7s mirrorless camera. After blogging about this camera for about 6 months, it was about time that we got to demo Sony's front-runner in the mirrorless uprising. A compact body and able to output a 4K signal, this camera seems to be a filmmaker's dream come true for under $3K. 1. Body/Construction This camera is quite small in the hands. I will give a warning to big guys and Canon 5D users- it's puny in the hands. The overall size is about the size of an iPhone 6. But some will find this as a relief if they often have a hurt back from using large camcorders all day. I'm not one of those people. Coming from a Canon 70D, I take comfort in being able to manhandle my camera without fear of breaking or slipping out of my hands. Buttons and dialed are top notch. I don't see these ever wearing out. They lack the plastic-y cheap feel that Canon dials fall victim to. The body is a mostly metal with a rubberized handgrip. The battery and SD card latches aren't remarkable but they don't feel cheap. My only complaint, and the complaint of many filmmakers: the Record button. It's flush against the rightside the of the camera where your index and thumb meet. I oftentimes couldn't do a no-look recording and would have to crane my head to the side to try and find the tiny button. 2. Battery Not as terrible as our Vlog #16 makes them out to be but these batteries aren't the ones you're looking for. I used to work with a Sony a37 and the A7s uses the same baby batteries. These batteries just lack the robustness and longevity of camcorder batteries. I know this is an obvious statement but if I'm losing one battery per hour, then there's a problem. If I were to shoot a film with the A7s then I would consider a battery grip, external power bricks, or at least 5 batteries and chargers for the day. --- ►► Subscribe to My Channel Here: http://bit.ly/2lZYHDP --- Website- http://jordanpanderson.com Instagram- http://instagram.com/jordanpanderson Facebook- http://facebook.com/jordanpandersonfilm Snapchat- http://snapchat.com/add/valley_films Canon 70D- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D Canon 10-18mm- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D RODE VideoMic Pro- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D iPhone 6- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D Adobe Premiere Pro CC- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D ►►New to the Vlog? -- How to Start A Production Company- https://goo.gl/OA6MKq My Life Story (sort of)- https://goo.gl/U5b2Ja I can remember picking up my family's video camera as a teenager and being enthralled that I could make an impact in someone's life. The filmmaking process is complex but at the heart of it simple: tell a compelling story. What resonates the hardest is visual storytelling. The ability to create an emotion or convey an idea through an image is what drives my career as a filmmaker. My marathon mentality is focused on becoming the best cinematographer possible.

Chris Fenwick takes on hosting duties for today’s show since my vocal chords are ripped from being sick this week. Today’s filmmaking panel includes planetMitch of planet5d.com and Ron Dawson of DareDreamMag.com. We start off by taking a leap from the edge of space with “Fearless” Felix Baumgartner and his amazing 128,000 feet supersonic jump – all covered in unprecedented detail. In addition to RED cameras and Canon 5D’s mounted to the cabin, there were 5 GoPro Hero cameras mounted to Felix’s spacesuit for what will no doubt be some of the most amazing POV shots ever. Speaking of GoPro, planetMitch talks about the new 4K GoPro Hero3 cameras announced this morning. We continue the discussion of shooting interviews in this episode. Chris Fenwick talks with his former boss, Stewart Cheifet, long time host and director of the Computer Chronicles show. Cheifet – who has interviewed the likes of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Larry Ellison – shares some of his interviewing tips and techniques. Ron Dawson talks about the interview from the standpoint of being a documentary filmmaker. He talks about one of current projects – Mixed in America – and how the interview turned out to be journey of discovery that took the film into unexpected places and emotions.

Episode 34 - Featuring Khalid Mohtaseb and Jonathan Bregel of Next Level Pictures - on the Digital Convergence Podcast by 16x9 Cinema with hosts Carl Olson (http://16x9cinema.com) and Chris Fenwick (http://chrisfenwick.com). In the first segment of the show, Chris Fenwick talks about his behind the scene experience with Shane Hurlbut's Hurlbut Visuals HDSLR Bootcamp. Chris gives a feel for what it was like to be in attendance. Chris talks about how the editors at the HDSLR Bootcamp used Adobe Premiere Pro instead of Apple's Final Cut Pro and why. We geek out on data management when Chris reveals he collected over 680 GB of data at the HDSLR Bootcamp. In the next segment I talk to two amazing filmmakers who are in their early twenties. Khalid Mohtaseb was born in Doha Qatar in December 1985. He spent his childhood traveling from one country to another, until his father was relocated to Wayne New Jersey in 1993. Khalid's work includes the controversial Haiti Earthquake Aftermath video - an amazingly beautiful, cinematic depiction of the sad human cost of this devasting earthquake. Khalid's talent has taken him all the way from shooting film in Coney Island to corporate interviews around the country. Jonathan Bregel was mentored at a young age by photographer/professor Juan Carlos Castro and was taught the art of lighting, and frame composition. Prior to attending college, Jonathan's photography and documentary work was displayed in museums nationwide. Years later, he graduated from Full Sail University with a BS in Filmmaking. Jonathan's work has already been displayed on many television stations including; IFC, MTV, MTV2, MTVu, Fuse, and BET. Jonathans passion for filmmaking and travel has allowed him to shoot in every state in the USA along with several places outside the USA. Khalid and Jonathan talk about a new music video they filmed with Canon 5D's and 7D's for the music group There for Tomorrow and their new single Deathbed.
