This is a show I have been thinking about doing for a while, and that I believe is an important subject for both new and veteran music photographers…. BUT even if you're not a music photographer, this subject should matter to you. I think it applies to anyone negotiating prices. I have strong opinions on what the ASMP has referred to as "Predatory" Releases, and there's no question that I have an opinion on the message I want to get out on this episode, but, it is my show, so I get to do that. If you're not a Music Photographer, and have never heard of photo releases - note that these are NOT model releases - then don't worry. I explain what they are, and why they exist, in the show. Then I am joined by two other music photographers... My buddy David Bergman is a Canon Explorer of light, and hosts the show Ask David Bergman on Adorama TV. There are few people I know of that know more about photography than David, from his days shooting for the famed Miami Herald newspaper, to having 13 Sports Illustrated covers, David is a big deal. He has been Luke Combs' full-time tour photographer since January 2019, and Bon Jovi's tour photographer since 2010. So glad that we get to benefit from his years of experience in media and music photography for this show. Oh yeah... David's workshops, like Shoot From the Pit and his upcoming Italy trip, are great chances to hang out and learn photography. Also on the show we have Montreal based Music Photographer Marie Demeire. I have followed Marie on socials for years, but today is my first time meeting her face-to-face. Known around the net as "Marie Goes To Shows", she has been published in Complex, EDM.com, Bandcamp, iHeartRadio Canada, Canadian Beats, 99Scenes, Sors-Tu, the MUHC Foundation, Secret Melbourne and BP Arts Media. Having been a fan of her work for years, I am thrilled to be able to get her perspective on this subject. Join Canon Explorer of Light David Bergman, and Montreal Music Photographer Marie Demeire, as they join me for a serious, and fun, chat about Concert Photo Releases, on this Behind the Shot. Because of Fujifilm's massive launch last week (and Sigma dropped a new 24-70mm f/2.8, too), the PetaPixel Podcast team had to record early and release later than usual, but that also meant a lot happened that they didn't get to talk about. That changes this week, because there was a ton to go over including Canon finally annoucning the development of the EOS R1, a camera that has been in development for at least three years. But that didn't go as smoothly as Canon perhaps would have preferred, as Adorama published fake specifications for the camera on their website and was then forced to make a public apology. Beyond that, Adobe announced that Firefly generative AI tools were coming to Lightroom and Ricoh's new GRIII HDF is so popular that Japan had to resort to selling it by lottery. This week, Panasonic announced the S9 and Chris and Jordan have some thoughts on it and also share how they think L-mount is doing now in mid 2024. Creating and sustaining a successful photo career is no easy feat. To help aspiring young imagemakers acquire the needed creative concepts and business skills, two New York-based organizations—ASMP NY and BKC—have teamed up to offer the innovative mentorship, education, and industry immersion program The Bridge. Open to individuals from 18- to 26-years-old, The Bridge embraces diversity and offers opportunity to underserved communities, regardless of formal photography experience. Best of all, this four-month, real world program is free to accepted students. We first learned about The Bridge during a chat with program co-founder Liam Alexander for the show ASMP-NY and the Future of Photo Trade Organizations in February 2022. Since the program's second year recently wrapped with a gallery exhibition in Brooklyn, and plans are in the works to expand The Bridge to other ASMP chapters in 2023, we wanted to learn more about this valuable initiative in advance of the next application window this spring. For this week's podcast, we're joined by Alexander, who sheds light on The Bridge program's inner workings and educational goals during the first half of the show. After a break, we speak with 2022 Bridge graduate Eli Edwards, who describes what he learned through the program, and the resulting shift in the pictures he makes, as well as in his creative point of view. To discover how to futureproof your career and learn how to apply for this free program, make sure to listen in! On today's episode of the B&H Photography Podcast we welcome two members of the New York chapter of the American Society of Media Photographs, otherwise known as the ASMP-NY and we discuss their evolving role as a trade organization for photographers, as well as a recent photography exhibition they sponsored.   Our guests are Liam Alexander, President of the New York chapter of ASMP, and Harper Bella, ASMP-NY board member and co-curator of the exhibition "Uncovering the Laws of Perseverance". From Alexander, we learn a bit about the history, structure, and benefits of the organization and discuss his initial reasons for joining. We also talk about the group's mentorship programs, photo law counsel, and recent initiatives to include a new generation of artists, whether that means reaching out to photographers from underrepresented communities or opening the organization's membership criteria to include “new media” makers, who don't necessarily operate within traditional media outlets.   In the second half of the show, we speak with Harper Bella about the impressive show she co-curated and how it was born from the anger and up-rise sparked by the George Floyd murder and then nurtured through difficult yet fruitful conversations with other ASMP-NY board members.  We also learn about her curatorial process, the disparate photographers involved, and the varied artistic responses to the idea of protest, including healing as a form of resistance.   Join us for this interesting conversation and learn how this photography trade organization, founded in 1944, is listening to its community and adapting to the new media and cultural landscape.   Guests: Liam Alexander and Harper Bella Photograph © Harper Bella https://www.asmp.org/newyork/ https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/podcasts

JAY MYSELF documents the monumental move of renowned photographer and artist, Jay Maisel, who, in February 2015 after forty-eight years, begrudgingly sold his home-the 36,000 square-foot, 100-year-old landmark building in Manhattan known simply as "The Bank." Through the intimate lens of filmmaker and Jay's protégé, noted artist and photographer Stephen Wilkes, the viewer is taken on a remarkable journey through Jay's life as an artist, mentor, and man; a man grappling with time, life, change, and the end of an era in New York City. JAY MYSELF Director Stephen Wilkes stops by to talk about his own relationship with Maisel, as a mentor and colleague, Maisel’s razor-sharp eye for composition and color and capturing the master’s bittersweet transition from his own creative Valhalla. About Jay Maisel: After studying painting and graphic design at Cooper Union and Yale, Maisel began his career in photography in 1954. While his portfolio includes the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Miles Davis, he is perhaps best known for capturing the light, color, and gesture found in everyday life. Some of his commercial accomplishments include five Sports Illustrated swimsuit covers, the first two covers of New York Magazine, the cover of Miles Davis' Kind of Blue (the best-selling jazz album of all time), twelve years of advertising with United Technologies, and awards from such organizations as ICP, ASMP, ADC, PPA, and Cooper Union. Since he stopped taking on commercial work in the late '90s, Jay has continued to focus on his personal work. He has developed a reputation as a giving and inspiring teacher as a result of extensive lecturing and photography workshops throughout the country. He also continues to sell prints, which can be found in private, corporate, and museum collections. Today’s episode launches a two-part interview during which Heather jumps out of her usual format and talks to three amazing guests at the same time!   Tune in for an insightful, casual conversation with Ken, Suzee, and Shayla.   Key Takeaways [:31] Jay Michael Tucker, President of the Northern California ASMP chapter, introduces today’s guests: Suzee Barrabee, Ken Zayne, and Shayla Love as well as your host, Heather Elder. [4:33] Heather welcomes listeners to a special two-part live recorded series of Dear Art Producer and begins the conversation by asking her 3 guests how they found their way into art production. [7:08] Shayla talks starting with pizza delivery in Boulder Colorado and making her way to Uber Eats and everything creative in between. [9:15] Ken ran into photography through a program called City in a School and made his way to FIT and fashion photography before ending up at Gap, Inc./Old Navy. [11:27] Suzee was a lost soul who answered a want ad! [14:22] Suzee opens up the conversation about the differences between working the brand side vs being in an agency. [16:45] Shayla digs deeper into the idea that working client-side can become insular. [18:57] Ken weighs in on the pros and cons of the increased creative control that working client-side offers. [20:40] Changes in the industry have affected everyone; Heather is curious to know what other projects than photography her guests are hiring for. [22:38] Suzee talks about having a more holistic approach. You have a brief [built against a media plan] and money, and the question then becomes what is the best way to answer this brief. [24:26] Shayla shares the scope of decision-making that needs to happen to deliver on a brief, as well as the weight of performance and results that the producer has to shoulder. Tip: if a photographer can provide the performance metrics for their past work, it can be a huge asset — and those metrics are very accessible for social media work — you can ask for that information. [29:33] Heather asks in a crowded marketplace, how do we get your attention? [30:09] Ken thinks mailers are great; go for larger formats so the work is showcased properly. Emails are good too, he does respond and will do in-person meetings when possible. Don’t hesitate to share your work! [34:59] Suzee shares what catches her eye. Being freelance, she does prefer emails to mailers (they take too much room in her house!). Every two months is a bit aggressive but she keeps an eye out for everything since she never knows what her next project might be. Instagram is huge for her, include your links in your emails. [37:19] Relevance is key to Shayla — she is brand-side so she has one focus. Use Instagram as a tool, pay the fees, and target people! Having a face and a conversation to remember is also important, so trying to get a meeting in helps and she often hosts reps. [41:28] Heather shares her own experience on the importance of meetings in person; art producers are asking to meet her photographers more and more. [43:35] Suzee shares a personal story about meeting a National Geographic photographer, even when time was short. [44:29] Love of photography drives the business and it’s important for everyone to make time to meet, even if time is always short. And on this note, Heather invites listeners to tune in for Part 2 of this interview!   Thanks for listening!   In an industry where the rules are always changing, it’s helpful to hear from those on the front line. Today’s episode is Part 2 of a special two-part interview with three brand-side art producers; jump back in for the rest of this awesome conversation with Ken, Suzee, and Shayla.   Key Takeaways [:31] Heather welcomes listeners back to this special two-part live recording of Dear Art Producer and picks up the conversation with her three guests. [1:12] Motion came into photographer’s arsenal only a few years ago so some are now already directors and some are still figuring out the basics. Heather asks her guests what requirements they have as it pertains to motion. [2:07] Suzee explains that there are many configurations that depend on the client and project and that there is a learning curve since it’s a growing field. [3:38] Ken finds that it’s really easy to sell a photographer taking care of motion because it guarantees an aesthetic uniformity. [6:17] Shayla always needs some motion component. When the brief requires some video but the bulk is stills, she will look for photographers who are apt at motion or turn the stills into a GIF. [9:00] Heather speaks to the difficulties she encounters when agencies ask for ‘motion’ estimates without the client having any clear idea of what they want. [9:53] Ken is guilty of exactly that with Heather! [10:55] Everyone shares their perspective on and experience with ‘behind-the-scenes’ videos… Q.A. [14:23] Audience question: When looking at a photographer’s website for motion, what is the best format? Condensed reel? Finished products? And what about photographer/directors? [14:40] Ken, Suzee, and Shayla all say that raw, edited, and finished products should be on your website. [16:44] Heather’s advice for photographers looking to start with motion: Have a motion solution for your client. [19:22] Heather moves the conversation to treatments to ask how they are used, and what they should include and exclude. [20:00] For Shayla, treatments are a luxury that happens if time permits, and it does introduce the approach the photographer is going to take, which is really helpful if you’ve not worked together often and really useful for pitching the estimate. [21:22] Suzee echoes Shayla’s answer and adds that it helps drive the creative as well as logistics conversations around the project. But she does underscore how the number one most important driver for the final choice is the creative call. [23:49] Ken touches on what he expects from a creative call and treatments and how important they both are in terms of showcasing your vision, passion, confidence, and appreciation for the project. [26:36] Shayla speaks to the opportunity for “extra credits” that treatments and creative calls offer. [27:32] Heather reiterates the critical importance of being ready for the creative call — if you haven’t read the brief, say no and set a different date! Q.A. [29:43] Audience question: It sounds like there is no right way to do treatments, but ultimately what is a good treatment? Is it showcasing your experience to do a shoot? The research? [31:02] All of the above says Ken; he shares a couple of professional stories. Q.A. [34:44] Audience question: Have people ever charged for a treatment? [34:56] Suzee explains that it’s the cost of doing business and they would not pay for a treatment — but if you feel like you’re being taken advantage of, ask yourself questions. [36:08] Heather steers the conversation towards estimating and what it takes to get a job approved on the art production side. [36:56] Decks, decks, and more decks are Shayla’s constant work for relaying the information and data to the creative team in order to get to the unbiased best option for that project. But the speed of it depends on the company: Uber Eats is lightning fast at making those decisions. [39:08] Facebook has a very clear but rigorous process and Suzee does find that larger companies tend to have heavier red tape to wade through. [40:25] Cost consultants will add about four days to the whole process. [41:56] Suzee will call you if you didn’t get the job but the way she is able to articulate the why of that decision, or not, has gotten Heather thinking about how she asks for that information! [43:53] Ken chimes in with the idea that anyone who is bidding is the winner — among hundreds of possible portfolio. And Shayla shares the most common reasons you didn’t get the job, it’s the creative call… Q.A. [47:01] Audience question: So you bid for a new client and lost, how do you follow up with that relationship productively? [47:27] Heather offers some ideas, the door is open; gently foster the relationship, some new work updates, and count on the timing. Q.A. [50:08] Audience question: What are the macro trends in advertising budgets recently? Is photography shrinking in the face of motion? [50:46] Motion still takes up the biggest portion of the budget pie and there is a marked increase in the demand for motion within stills projects. However there are channels that always require stills, so the days of shooting stills are more numerous than motion. Q.A. [53:42] Audience question: A lot of the stuff up on client sites is not relevant to what they are currently doing, how do we get that information? [54:35] Heather offers that you should ask the person that gave you the meeting in the first place, they will be a great source of information. [56:15] Ken offers up a tip wrapped in a personal story, show the work that is relevant, but show the work you love to do, it’s who you are. [57:53] Heather thanks everyone for this awesome experience and invites listeners to tune in for future episodes.   Thanks for listening!   In an industry where the rules are always changing, it’s helpful to hear from those on the front line. Haviv has produced an unflinching record of the injustices of war and his photography has had singular impact. His work in the Balkans, which spanned over a decade of conflict, was used as evidence to indict and convict war criminals at the international tribunal in The Hague. President George H.W. Bush cited Haviv’s chilling photographs documenting paramilitary violence in Panama as one of the reasons for the 1989 American intervention.Haviv’s work has been featured in numerous museums and galleries, including the Louvre, the United Nations, and the Council on Foreign Relations. Want to ensure that your creative work is protected? ASMP is calling on photographers and creatives of all disciplines to support an incredibly important piece of legislation that could make it signifigantly easier for creatives to resolve copyright disputes without incurring the expenses of going to federal court. ASMP Executive Director Tom Kennedy and Advocacy Counsel Mike Klipper discuss the importance of the proposed CASE Act and how offering a small claims court resolution for copyright infringement could be a massive benefit to creatives across America. The House Judiciary Committee is considering and voting on HR3945 (the CASE Act) in early April; therefore, ASMP needs you to contact – by phone, email, or letter – your representative urging them to support the bill that protects your rights as a creator, even if you have already done so, to stress the urgency and importance of this bill that has been twelve long years in the making. My introduction to Sean Kernan and the breadth of his work was at a business conference sponsored by the American Society of Media Photographers almost a decade ago. Sean gave an inspiring talk about photography and showed images from his book, Among Trees. He then called everyone up to the front and asked for volunteers to do a movement exercise. I hesitated for a moment, then thought, I'm here to be uncomfortable and grow and threw myself into the mix. For the next few minutes Sean walked a group of us through a process of interactions that transformed my thinking about creativity and connections with other people. A few years later ASMP held another iteration of the conference and I went, almost exclusively, because Sean was presenting. Sean did not disappoint. When his most recent book, Looking into the Light: Creativity and the Photographer was published I was excited to see if it brought a similar energy and insight into the exploration of seeing. As with my previous experiences, Sean delivers the goods.Sean is not only a successful photographer, recognized for his work in both the commercial and exhibition art worlds. He has also worked in theater, written four books, produced and directed two documentaries, and taught at several universities as well as the esteemed Maine and Santa Fe Workshops.

Exposed Photography Showcase There are countless ways to get out there and network or show your work to others. One local event is the Exposed Photography Showcase at the College of DuPage. It was held last night (05/03/2016) with approximately 500 people in attendance. The Exposed Photography Showcase is a juried contest for both college students as well as surrounding area high school students. We had 11 high schools submit work and I was on the panel of judges for them. The COD student's work was looked at by three local professional photographers. Some of the prizes were subscriptions to the Adobe CC, subscription to ASMP, and even a Canon 70D kit was awarded. This was only the second year for the Exposed Photography Showcase and it was a huge success. Networking was fluent throughout the evening and I even heard a couple students landed internships. Other students were able to sell some work and even book a few sessions. The reality is, when you attend a networking event, any networking possible event, you never know who else may be there or what good can come of it. Happy Shooting! Colleen Wainwright is a Los Angeles-based writer, designer and consultant who obsesses over making complex ideas easy to understand.I met Colleen four years ago in Philadelphia at the Strictly Business Conference created by ASMP, the American Society of Media Photographers. As one of the keynote speakers, she absolutely rocked the house with her presentation and made me a fan of her mind and her writing. In this episode, Colleen shares her belief that almost everything good in her life has come about as a result of walking through some kind of fear. “Fear can be an ally – or it can be a foe,” she reminds us. A recovering perfectionist, Colleen says that hearing about the rough and rocky road others have traveled in their quest to make art helps her persevere. “The creative act is the process of giving birth. It can be ugly and painful.”Colleen is also a firm believer that clutter is one of the chief enemies in the creative life. “I cannot say enough about the power of letting go of the crap you don't need,” she observes.“It's easy to just turn to television for comfort, or to food, or to whatever it is for you – to turn away from the challenge because it's hard. To just quit, give up. Don't give up! If you keep looking for something, you will find the thing you're looking for even if it doesn't turn out to be the thing you set out to find. Don't quit before the miracle. These are not going to always be easy times.” ~ Colleen Wainwright
