On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss the new 24- and 32-inch iMac models that are rumored to be in the works. Later this year, Apple is expected to refresh the 24-inch iMac. The update is set to focus on the M3 chip, with no other major changes rumored, likely owing to the complete redesign that the current machine received upon its introduction in April 2021. This means that the ‌iMac‌ is set to be the only Mac product line to skip the M2 generation of chips entirely. The 24-inch ‌iMac‌ could be among the first Macs to get the ‌M3‌ chip, which should offer major performance and efficiency improvements over the M1 and M2 chips due to Apple's transition from TSMC's 5nm processes to a 3nm node. A refreshed selection of color options is also not out of the question. An ‌iMac‌ with a 32-inch display – the same size as the Pro Display XDR – is also in development, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. It is expected to feature the ‌M3‌ Pro and ‌M3‌ Max chips, and appears to be positioned as a successor to the ‌iMac‌ Pro or the high-end 27-inch ‌iMac‌. This new high-end desktop ‌iMac‌ is not expected to launch until late 2024 or sometime in 2025. Follow us on Twitter @danbarbera and @HartleyCharlton. Read transcriptEpisode Notes In this episode, I introduce Lynn and Damashe and announce some changes to our podcast, including the addition of chapters and breaking the episodes up into segments. We delve into some legislation in the EU that will make it easier for users to change their tech devices' batteries, reducing e-waste. We question what "easy" means and have concerns about the impact on creativity and safety. We also discuss the potential for manufacturers to market devices with easily replaceable batteries. Continuing that topic, I talk about repairability in iPhones and the potential impact of new legislation on the industry. I note that while Apple has improved the repairability of their latest models, other handset makers have not followed suit. I consider the potential consequences of making devices more easily repairable, such as increased repair costs and potential difficulties with waterproofing. We argue for guidance that promotes repairability without being overly specific in the law, which could stifle innovation. Later, we talk extensively about the EU's attempt to regulate technology with the aim of protecting consumers. We mention that the EU's regulations can have consequences for companies outside of the EU. I compare the Vision Pro to the first generation of the Apple Watch, with numerous features that may or may not be widely used. The goal is for the device to eventually become a pair of glasses with augmented reality. Additionally, we mention how developers can help extend the device's capabilities and make it even more exciting. Later, we discuss Apple's new Pro Display XDR and its potential abilities. We talk about the challenges of implementing passkeys for online security, expressing concern for edge cases and those who may be locked out of their accounts if they lose their device or forget their password. We emphasize the need for flexibility in implementing new security measures and the importance of considering the needs of all users. We recommend trying out passkeys as long as they work for each user. Towards the end of the episode, we suggest some recommended books for those interested in how technology is affecting our lives and how companies are exploiting our biases. Lastly, we discuss entertainment picks, including the Snoopy watch face on watchOS beta and the Marvel TV show "Secret Invasion," which we recommend checking out. The episode also includes some outtakes and a discussion of the Unmute call on the ACB community. How Apple Studio Display stacks up against Pro Display XDR and others Apple's massive Mac mini upgrade may not be ready until 2023 Apple's next major refresh for Mac mini may not come until 2023, according to the latest claims from one analyst, who has proven reliable in the past. Apple's next Mac mini could be powered by new ‘M2' and ‘M2 Pro' chips Most of us expected Apple's first M2 chipset to debut on Tuesday in a refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro, which was to be more powerful than its predecessor but still more affordable than the latest 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro options.

Apple's Revenue Strategy: Thousand-dollar Monitor Stands

What the world needs now.... isn't a $999 monitor stand. Apple's WWDC (Worldwide developer conference) 2019 had a number of interesting announcements, from updated hardware and software systems to new privacy features and more. Plus our Fast Five: > HPE is delivering 3D printing for (heavy) metal > Microsoft suggests we forget to change our password more often > Baltimore reveals just how expensive a ransomeware attack can be > The International Space Station is now "open for business" > Facebook swipes left on pre-installations on Huawei phones This week's Tech Bites Winner: Amazon has started using user-generated information in its advertising. That may not seem so bad, but in this case, they're using images from its Ring security devices featuring suspected criminals, and that might not be the best approach. Our Crystal Ball: Apple's new Mac Pro carries a hefty $5,999 entry point, and its Pro Display XDR monitor adds another $4,999. But can Apple really sell a monitor stand that costs an additional $999 (even if it does spin from landscape to portrait mode)? Hint: tilting your head is a lot less expensive.
