There's a spectrum of proficiency, and it starts in the worst possible place. That's when you're unconsciously incompetent—you're not good at something, and worse, you don't even know you're bad at it or what to do about it. Think job interviewing. If you put in some effort, you might move to consciously incompetent stage—you know what you should do (like the strategies your dear Coachy Andy teaches), but you're not quite there yet. Fast forward through the grind, and let's skip some steps for email brevity, until you hit the sweet spot: unconsciously competent. That's when you're so good, it's automatic. You're nailing it without even thinking about it. As your coach, I'm here every week to help you climb this spectrum, especially when it comes to building your career. And let's face it—interviewing is one of the biggest hurdles in career advancement. So, we're tackling that head-on this week. Today, we're uncovering the three most brutal interview killers that trip up 99% of job candidates. Spoiler alert: they're all about storytelling. Let's dive into a story first and fix this once and for all… If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Are you a rambler? Fast talker? Slow talker? Nervous when asked a question in an interview and curious just how long that ideal answer should be? Or, how to deliver it concisely? Powerfully? Today, it's all about staying on track when you respond to interviewers. Whether your response is one minute, three minutes, or five minutes, it needs to be packaged with the right information, powerful words that paint a picture, and phrases that elicit the feelings you want the interviewer to have about you. That's right. They hire you based on feelings. Why? Because they have to hire you (or not) based on something. And, they don't exactly have enough time to get all the information they'd actually need to know whether you'd be a star. (Even though you and your beloved Coach are already certain that'd be the case.) What's more, they think four times faster than you can talk, so that gives them ample time to imagine. Let's get them imagining how awesome their lives will be once they hire you! If you ever feel rushed to prepare for an interview, one thing is certain… You did not approach your job search the correct or efficient way. You should never need more than an hour to prepare for an interview. Today, I'm going to tell you why and give you the steps so you will never feel rushed again. When candidates prepare for their interviews, most make the mistake of solely focusing on rehearsing answers to common questions. Uh, no good. I've got a much more effective way to truly elevate your performance and get better results. Remember, as I've reminded you, oh, I dunno, about a bajillion times, the most qualified candidate often doesn't get the job. So, there are other aspect of your interview interaction you need to nail! There's the storytelling part. I've gone to great lengths to teach you my CAAR technique and how to prepare and package your “power stories.” Those lessons are fantastic and you can find them on my YouTube channel. They will teach you tactically how to identify the right stories and deliver them. That is, how to write the lyrics to the song. Today, however, I have a next-level lesson on ways to improve your “performance.” I'm talking not about the song itself, but the singing, dancing, and energetic part of the delivery that is overlooked by job seekers but mostly what the interviewer notices! Education does NOT get you paid. Knowledge is NOT power. The only thing that matters in life (as it relates to your career success) is the value of the assets you produce. Some might call this the application of your knowledge. Right now, how do you feel about your renumeration in relation to your hard work? That's another little bugger. Hard work does NOT equal pay just like knowledge itself is not value. And don't even get me started about that variable called “time” and the inertia it produces when it comes to capping your value and earning power for that matter. If you're trading your muscles for money, your capacity to increase your income is limited. Even I trade my brain for money when I coach individuals, which caps my earning capacity because I can only coach one person during that one hour. If you're managing lots of people or I perform a group coaching session, our income capacity will still be handicapped in some way or another. How ‘bout, today, I help you understand the limiters and accelerators when it comes to earning power? We'll tie together the relationship between your skills and money too. Cool? Bad assumptions. Change that. Assumptions of any kind. They simply ruin your negotiation process. Any time you speak first, you're making an assumption. Anytime you're thinking, you're making an assumption. I know this sounds ridiculous, but unless you actually have a job offer in hand, you don't know what the employer is thinking. This is public enemy #1—assumptions—when it comes to negotiating an offer. Public enemy #2 is not knowing what success looks like and how to argue your value in relation to it. “It hurts me […] when you're so awesome, but you just can't convey your awesomeness in a bite-sized package that sells you best […] because you want to add all these albatrosses around your neck with dead-weight words that don't do anything or paint a colorful picture.” That's verbatim from today's lesson on Why You Fail Job Interviews and the Best Way to Fix it (CAAR). I know it's verbatim because I kept stopping the video every few seconds so I could type the words just like I said them. We're diving into perspective, new ways to look at how you convey yourself, and the exact formula to use. You know me. I'm all about the formulas. Does it feel like you're working hard at your job search but not getting results? Could it be you're working hard at all the wrong things? Well, I'm about setting a direction, working the best steps, capturing data, making adjustments, and finding success fast! I know job searching stinks. I know you don't do this very often. I feel for you. I truly do, which is why I created today's video for you. It's about how to view your job search correctly. Chart your path. Capture the right data. With a 9-step formula I know works. Let's get after it! If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Value is difficult to gauge. It's unique to everyone. You might join one of my programs and pay the enrollment price. Price = easy to see. Everyone who joins my programs pays the same price. Cost is equal. Return is NOT. Someone might get a nice $5,000 pay increase thanks to the application of my lessons. Someone else might get a $300,000 pay increase. No matter which end of the spectrum you fall on, you'll never know how valuable something is—in tangible or intangible terms—until you look back. How much effort, diligence, and consistency you put into your investments, also has a way of yielding higher value. I've discovered these correlations don't register easily for many people I've encountered. Another concept that's truly elusive is trying not to equate effort with results. As much as I'd love to hire the person who works really hard, I'd love even more to hire the person who works half the time and yields twice the output. The trick, for you, is to convince the employer in advance, you're a twice-the-output kinda person. Before you can do this, there are a few things you need to understand about value. If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. I'm covering résumé writing today. More specifically, I'm covering the ins and outs and twists and turns of the professional experience section. I'm literally blown away at the number of ways job seekers royally screw up this section of their marketing document. It genuinely hurts me when anyone makes mistakes I'm so desperately trying to help them avoid. That's why I went into great detail in today's podcast on how to get this right and powerfully sell yourself. Ever have a tough time you thought would never go away? Maybe you were at mile 20 of the marathon. Maybe you were in the middle of a one-year-long job search. Maybe that stinker-of-a boss has been dangling that carrot-of-a promotion forever. No matter the issue, we need something to pull us through. This being Valentine's Week (let's celebrate all week, shall we?), I want to talk about the most important relationship you'll ever have—the one you have with yourself. More specifically, I want you to know yourself so well that you'll be SURE you can get through anything. That's why I've created this heart-to-heart I'd like to have with you. It's not long. In fact, it's about coming up with something short…and powerful. If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Check out the milewalk Academy, my coaching and training site, for freemiums and premiums. 2. I have hundreds of educational and inspirational videos on my YouTube Channel. 3. Money. Actually, more like money you'll get in the future. Money is funny that way, especially when the money we're talking about is your salary. We negotiate like heck for what we'll be paid in the future. So, why is it that so many employees try to argue for a new salary based on what they did in the past? Isn't that so yesteryear? Wasn't that so your last job? Past performance is not an indicator of future performance when I change the variables. Here's a funny. I earned a nice living as an executive recruiter. Then, I became a career coach. And, well, as smart as that rich executive recruiter guy was, that new career coach didn't know diddly about email marketing, YouTube-ing, podcasting, and TikTok-ing (still don't). I could have argued with myself and said, “Self. You've been awesome at recruitment, sales, serving your clients, and everything else that goes with it. I'm sure you know your stuff and can explain it to all those people who live in Germany, Canada, and California. Here's a big fat raise.” Then, I would have fired myself in the first year. Splat. Career coach guy didn't only not earn more money. He didn't even earn less money. He actually lost money. Ouch! (I'll stop the 3rd-person thing now.) You might be thinking, well, you were making a career change, so that makes sense. Okay, but why do you think you should get a new payday because you're doing the SAME job as last year? Or, the same job at a new employer? Why should your current employer give you more money for doing the same thing? Inflation? Don't think so. Oh, you got a fat promotion? Or more responsibilities? Ah. Heck to the YEAH! So, that means you're in a new position? How can I, your boss, know for certain you'll do well? (Remember, past performance is a funny thing and we have some new variables here.) I think you get the gist by now. Good news is I won't be the one you'll need to negotiate your raise with. Better news is I'm giving you the what-to-do to earn more money—in the future. Think of me with every paycheck that is auto-deposited into your bank account. We're about to wrap up a big month for hiring. How's your job search coming?! I hope you're getting those interviews and, today, I have a not-so-little something special to help. I'm covering one of my all-time favorite questions to ask an employer in a job interview… “What does success look like—exactly?” If you don't know what success looks like, how will you know what goals to shoot for? How would you know whether you're working toward the right results? How would you—or THEY—know how to “grade” your performance? It absolutely amazes me any organization can function, let alone survive, without knowing the answer to this question for every single person it employs. BUT (you knew this was coming), you and I know this happens frequently. Now, I already told you the question—which is the main theme for today's lesson. But, how could I have possibly spent 26:32 on this ONE question? Because, THIS question will become the centerpiece of your entire job search. And (taking a giant deep breath here to say all this all without pausing so please forgive the upcoming run-on sentence)… THIS question will make you successful if you focus on it from the time you think about what you want to do with your career to writing your resume and cover letters and LinkedIn profile to choosing which companies and people you target, how you get the interviews, what you say to those nice people in the interviews, and…when you finally ask this question in the interview…to confirm you know what success looks like and on you go to the counteroffer. I'm pretty sure that's how I lay it out and everything I ultimately cover in this action-packed, highly-education, pivotal lesson. Get ready to change the way you think about job searching! If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Do you want to be known as “the man” or “the woman” in your field? A legend? I do. And, I'm proud to say so. But I don't master my craft because I need external adoration. That's not the driver. I do it for me and because it serves you. My friends and family don't understand my uncommon drive probably because it's uncommon—truly rare. If you want to be a 1%-er do you think behaving like the other 99% will get you there? In The Zebra Code (get the BOGO offer NOW while it supplies last), I wrote a chapter called “Mastering Your Trade.” I emphasize the importance of developing not just specific job skills, but foundational capabilities that transcend your particular trade. These are the skills that set you apart and enable you to excel no matter the industry you're in. I cover the strategic approach to skill mastery, starting with building the right mindset, cultivating an attitude of abundance and optimism, continually learning, and seeking the right mentors and educational opportunities. On we go to identifying the right capabilities and building and practicing them diligently. And never stopping. All of these efforts are part of a personalized roadmap that guides your growth and ensures you're always moving forward, even when you hit inevitable bumps along the way. Do you want to commit to excellence? Do you want to become an expert in your field? The first step is only a chapter or video away. This ENTIRE week I'm treating you to some serious assets that will catapult your career. The only two questions are, “Will you take advantage of them?” “Will you keep going?” If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Today, let's talk how to answer negative job interview questions. These are brutal. Tricky. And, to boot, give you loads of opportunity to mess us. They are literally a complete waste of breath and give the interviewer absolutely zero data on whether you'll be a star employee. But, for some unknown reason, instead of asking you bright and effective questions that elicit information to actually help them determine whether you'll be a winner, they ask you… If we hire you, what would be the reason we fire you? Why should we not hire you? Why wouldn't you take this job? Etc. etc. etc. until your eyeballs roll so high they get stuck in the back of your head. You get the idea. Good news is your beloved coach will give you a bulletproof formula for all of these dumb and useless questions. Take a listen! Got a special, powerful message for you today. I discussed this concept back in August (on the 8th), but held it so we can wrap 2024 with a bang and get you pumped for all you WILL accomplish in 2025. It's a lesson on the 3 factors of high performers. This isn't your run-of-the-mill pep talk—it's a masterclass on harnessing your mindset to fuel success and resilience. Inside, I hit… Attitude as a Catalyst: Attitude shapes not just your experiences but also inspires those around you. It's about manufacturing optimism from within and letting that optimism ignite inspiration in others. The Power of Passion, Vision, and Commitment: These three pillars are what all (truly) successful individuals share. It's about discovering your passion, nurturing it, and committing to your vision relentlessly. (BTW, these are not the 3 factors of high performers I mention in the title.) Framing and Priming: Understand the art of framing your thoughts and priming your emotions to align with your goals. It's about the internal dialogue you feed yourself—ditch the “fake it ‘til you make it” mindset and embrace authenticity. Crafting Your Success Story: I share personal stories, including my journey from engineering student to executive recruitment, and how I built a successful career coaching business. The story is a testament to the power of strategic vision and unwavering commitment. The lesson is about empowering you to conquer challenges and achieve your impossible (just like I say in Out of Reach but in Sight!). Here's to making 2025 your best year yet! (If you're just dying to know what empathic concern is, check out page 118.) They're secrets because, well, I don't see a lot of job seekers implementing these techniques. You need them at your disposal when you get fatigued, but they are truly best practices from the start. Whether this is the first day of your search or you've been at this a while, this lesson is for you. Let's get you charged and on your way to getting hired! My entire life, I just needed to know. I'd never let myself wonder. How great could I be? The not knowing would just kill me. A regret I'd never let myself live with. Ever feel this way? Ever wonder how good you could be at something if you let yourself be? If you—literally—gave it your all? After going through my entire career (eh, life) all-out with no brakes (yes, I meant brakes not breaks), I've learned a thing or two about being a maestro. I've interviewed, met with, helped, taught, recruited, and coached tens of thousands of people. I can distill down, in a few seconds, what makes the best the best. This approach is bulletproof if you want to be the best you you can be. It'll also help tremendously if you're job searching. I know it's Thanksgiving week for many in my community and you might be scurrying around town doing last minute turkey shopping. That's why I kept this powerful message to a short 3:39. Squeeze it in somewhere when you have a few minutes. The lesson is simple to understand. Difficult to do. Fully rewarding. And life altering. I realize it's mid-November and the Christmas décor has already draped many stores for an entire month, but your career doesn't take a holiday (nor do I). Today, I'm serving up a major lesson on why now is literally THE BEST time to job search. You're at the start line of a 3-month hiring frenzy. It doesn't matter whether the year is 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 or 2024 or any other years I omitted. It doesn't matter what you do. Who you are. Who you were. Or, who you want to be. It's the SAME every single year. As an executive recruiter, I could have rolled out of bed on Halloween. Worked until the end of January. And taken the rest of the year off. Every year. Employers start hiring like crazy NOW. You might consider me nutso for thinking this. After all, it's contrary to what most think. But just because many think it doesn't make it so. I'll debunk the myth for you. What's more, I'll teach you how to swap out couch duty for my Job Search Challenge®. That way you'll know exactly how to approach this target-rich, job-searching time. There's no time to waste. Just like I said right there on page 313 of The Zebra Code in Chapter 21 My Gift to Find Your Gift (which, by the by, is my all-time favorite chapter and prose I've ever written)… “Have faith that true champions are made in the darkness. They're the ones that practice before the sun rises. The treasure that time and know their effort is what will help them make a better life for themselves and others.” Let's get to it! In my lifetime, I've prepared, oh, conservatively, about a bajillion job candidates for their interviews. Most are so worried about the wrong stuff. Most prepare backwards. If you sound more accomplished, you have a better chance of getting more too. True story. But, what if you're, well, junior? Or, what if you've been doing the same job for a long time? It hurts me when I see people make a mistake. It practically kills me when I see them repeating—on purpose—the same mistake. I've made lots of mistakes, so please don't think I think I'm a know-it-all. I don't judge anyone because they made different mistakes than I did. We're all different and have walked different paths, experienced different things, and built different perspectives. I like to think, however, that age and experience have helped me test different theories and note the results. Today, I'm sharing 9 unconventional pieces of wisdom, tactics, and habits I've learned through my testing of life. It's a gamut from building skills to solving problems to dealing with people I've learned from running all those tests and making those aforementioned mistakes. A real rainbow of goodness. I spent more time coming up with complete title of The Zebra Code: A Step-By-Step Guide to Mastering Career Skills That Make You a Standout Professional than writing the entire book. 7 months for the title. 6 months to write the entire book (really 5, because I spent a month polishing). True story. Why? I wanted to get in… Something unique (and avoid generic leadership-y titles like The Leadership Code yawn). Short main title (2-3 words only). A metaphor people will understand. Ability to coin, copyright, unique URL for the title, etc. Ongoing books in a series (for future offsprings). Tell them what's inside (of course). Demonstrate there's a framework (but didn't want to be wordy). Make a promise as to what will happen when they read the book. Be specific about reader avatar (title needed to include something about the “who”). So, it shakes out… Code = Takes care of the item on methodology inside. Guide = It IS a guide, but I could have used the word “system” here instead. Mastering the Career Skills = It's really about this and there are detailed lessons inside. Standout = This is what will happen to you and picks up zebra metaphor. Professional = The book is genuinely for white collar professionals even though anyone can read it. Don't even get me started on the number of sleepless nights I had thinking about the cover design. Wondering what gives with my analogy? Seconds baby. Seconds. As in S-E-C-O-N-D-S. That's what YOU have to make the impression. You don't actually think you get your entire resume to make an impression??? Uh, heck to the NO. Your career profile, the executive summary of your ENTIRE professional life if you will, is your billboard. It's your title and subtitle. It's your ONE and BEST chance to get them excited. To entice them to review the rest of your glorious resume which substantiates everything you CLAIMED in your career profile. Just like The Zebra Code. I enticed you with the title and subtitle. Then, fulfilled my promise on the 352 pages that sit inside the cover. You get 2 paragraphs and then the remaining 1.875 pages to make good on your promise. It happens in seconds. Or 2 paragraphs. I've changed careers twice, which basically means I've got it down to a science. It's absolutely brutal. You deserve the truth. How brutal? This picture of my office popped up in my “memories” on my phone. It's from August 25, 2015, a shade over 9 years ago. 3:43 in the AM. I was knocking off for the evening so I could catch an hour or two of shut-eye before Harley or Ginger started licking my face as if it was their food bowl. That's a whopping 55 (calendar) days after I decided to “change careers” and become a career coach in addition to an executive recruiter. Of course, the long-term plan was to drive the jumbo jet on the runway until liftoff when I could go “all in” on the career coaching thing. I was on the runway for…let's see…carry the seven…a mere 5 years. Hang on. Hang on. Hang on. Lemme go get Andy Sunshine. Okay, he's back. I'd do it all over again. Anything worthwhile will take a bit of time. Fine, maybe a lot. But it's incredibly rewarding IF and ONLY IF you truly want it badly enough. Ever consider making a change? I like to say, “This world needs more of you, not less. There are people who need you to do what you ache to do. That's the part of you, you need to give them. That's the part of you I'd love to see. That's the part of you the world wants.” (From The Zebra Code, Chapter 21, My Gift to Find Your Gift) Maybe you like the way things are going and are on the right path. Maybe you've thought What if? Either way, today, I have 5 steps I'd suggest if you want to make that change! What would you give to be happier in your job? In your office? In your career? Would you give 25 minutes and 52 seconds? If you're willing to do just that, you'll learn exactly what I'd do. Warning: I'm not going to say anything to you like smile, have a better attitude, or blah blah blah. I wouldn't insult you with that trite stuff. I'll get you focused on and building the six “deliverables” I'd create and have “at the ready” so I'd feel happier about my situation! Have you been struggling to get your career to the next level? Maybe you're awesome at your trade. Maybe you are well networked in your company. Mayyyybe you're even the go-to person that seems to be able to fix everyone's “problems.” So, why is awesome you not getting awesomely ahead? It's one thing to be great at your job. It's entirely another to be all-out spectacular in your career. As a consultant, recruiter, business owner, and now career coach, I've long known skill stacking is what makes you powerful. It's the mind-bending formula where 1+1=4 and 1+1+1=10. Truly exponential in nature. You might hear me say, “The more “layers” you have, the more desirable you'll be to an employer.” I speak of how many boxes you check when it comes to their silly job descriptions. This is part of the equation. Now, skill stacking isn't just about how you match. It's about how much impact you'll have. At this point, you might be thinking I'm using my 9 semesters of higher math to make up new formulas. But have you ever heard of someone's pay rising and rising until all of sudden their compensation seems to be in a new stratosphere? They likely skill stacked. Today, I'm sharing my skill stacking concepts and how I've built my career using these techniques. Give it try and note the awesome results! Ever been snookered by a fake job? I mean, if you know you have? You might have been hoodwinked and didn't even know it. Perhaps you applied and silence. I glanced over a survey from Resume Builder very recently (not a site I recommend, but they ran the survey so what the hey?). A few key findings... 40% of companies posted a fake job listing this year. 30% of companies currently have active fake listings. 70% of hiring managers believe posting fake jobs is morally acceptable. Their rationale… Hiring managers say fake job postings led to boosted revenue, morale, and productivity and alleviate employee workload concerns. They indicate “company growth” as one of the top reasons behind fake job posting strategy. Sure. So, you know these fakers are out there. Now, how can you spot them and what can you do about it? Asking questions in a job interview is so important. I know I'm stating the obvious, but just because something is obvious doesn't mean people know how to do it—well! Today, I'm gonna give you a triple-header of high-quality questions. But, because I'm me and you're you and you deserve more, I'm not just going to tell you what questions to ask. Just because you ask a question and get an answer doesn't mean you got THE correct information. Or, know HOW to use the information. So, for completeness' sake, I'll tell you what to ask, what information you need to make sure the interviewer provides, and how to use the information to score better and get paid more. Are you exhausted from trying to figure out the best way to say what you want to say in a job interview? As in, which method do I use? Why do I have to speak interview-speak instead of normal, human-speak? Why is the company telling me I have to use the STAR technique? What the hey is the STAR technique? Wait, now that I think of it, Coach Andy tells me that approach isn't as good as his CAAR method. Exhausting, I know. You know who isn't exhausted? Me. I never tire of thinking up creative ways to help you better understand storytelling concepts and unlock your potential—especially when it comes to selling yourself. Do you wish your LinkedIn inbox was flooded with messages from recruiters fawning all over you? Would you settle for a few each week? Seeing nothing? Well, you need to know what drives them to you. I might not know how to get the YouTube algorithm to send people my way, but I do know how recruiters filter their LinkedIn searches. I know that because we had corporate and executive recruiters show us their dashboards and walk us through their processes as we built our latest rendition of the milewalk Academy® LinkedIn Workshop. I also know what job seekers can do to get those filters to choose them and that's what I'm sharing today. Today, you get a podcast on The Job Interview Formula Guaranteed to Get You Hired (CAAR). It's titled that because, well, it's an actual formula, which, if you use it, I pinky swear, you'll get hired. It literally, IMHO, is one of, if not, THE, very best podcasts I've created on how to answer questions—like ANY question—in a job interview. I cover the emotional and feelings aspect of it. I cover the step-by-step tactics. And encore with a very-detailed example to drive it home so it registers with zero distortion! Where might I learn something like this? Well, I coach, individually, approximately 500 people each year. Every year. Most of whom need interview coaching from me. To boot, I've been studying interviewing since 2004 as an executive recruiter. That's excluding the week-long behavioral interview coaching and roleplaying I endured way back in 1990. (1-9-9-0 just so you know that what's a typo.) You'll also need to disregard all the hiring I did up until 2004. Even so, I'm confident that leaves me with enough experience based on whatever's left over. Did I mention I wrote a book on this? Can we agree I've had lots of practice? Good! Now, enjoy… If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Is it détente or mutual destruction? I'm not sure, but AI will change the game for employers and employees, especially in the hiring process. Someone asked me a few weeks ago about my thoughts on the recent Wall Street Journal article titled You're Fighting AI with AI: Bots Are Breaking the Hiring Process. Here's what I had to say. I hope, as always, it positions YOU best to succeed! If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Here's a line straight out of The Zebra Code… “Always remember, your success, in anything, will have more to do with where you place your attention than your ability.” There are no truer words when it comes to your job search. Most people think their history matters. (Not really.) Others think their skills matter. (Not if you keep talking about them.) Others, the even sillier ones, think keywords matter. (Dear Lordy.) Let's talk philosophy today. Some tactics too. Let's toss in a dash of focus. Energy. With a splash of metaphysics. Dang. How ‘bout I just whip you up a three-courser of a job search, interview, and salary negotiation. Are you getting paid what you're worth? That was actually a trick question because there's absolutely no way for you to know exactly what you're worth. You're worth is dependent on what someone else is willing to pay for you at this exact moment in time. You are like a stock, a house, or anything else whose value is determined by someone else's desires, needs, challenges, and other factors which you know very little about. Even though your daily worth is a mystery, there are ways to determine what a potential employer feels you are worth—today. Wouldn't you know it? I have a video to help you better understand how to discover this. Inside, you'll hear me say funny stuff like, “Salary negotiation is not a transactional event. You do not win a salary negotiation. What you do… is from the time you send a cover letter and a resume or apply online or boss hunt […] from that moment with everything you do and everything you say and everything you don't do and everything you don't say until the time you counter their job offer […] that's the negotiation.” Gimme 17 minutes and 43 seconds of your life. It'll be worth it. Pun totally intended. If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. I get this one a lot. "Coach, I'm getting stock [or RSUs, ISOs, PIUs, Phantom, etc. etc.] as part of my compensation package. How do I value this? How do I gauge what the right amount is?" FYI…that's Restricted Stock Units, Incentive Stock Options, Profit Interest Units, Phantom Stock (yes, it's a thing) and several other variations of stock-ish type compensation. Well, like just about everything everybody ever asks me, this comes down to a number of considerations and what's important to you. There is no cookie-cutter formula however, I'm never at a loss for ways to help you consider your options (see what I did right there?).
