There's a spectrum of proficiency, and it starts in the worst possible place. That's when you're unconsciously incompetent—you're not good at something, and worse, you don't even know you're bad at it or what to do about it. Think job interviewing. If you put in some effort, you might move to consciously incompetent stage—you know what you should do (like the strategies your dear Coachy Andy teaches), but you're not quite there yet. Fast forward through the grind, and let's skip some steps for email brevity, until you hit the sweet spot: unconsciously competent. That's when you're so good, it's automatic. You're nailing it without even thinking about it. As your coach, I'm here every week to help you climb this spectrum, especially when it comes to building your career. And let's face it—interviewing is one of the biggest hurdles in career advancement. So, we're tackling that head-on this week. Today, we're uncovering the three most brutal interview killers that trip up 99% of job candidates. Spoiler alert: they're all about storytelling. Let's dive into a story first and fix this once and for all… If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Feel like you never have enough time to prep for an interview? Ever been contacted by an employer who wanted to talk right away? And you deferred? BIG mistake. You never want the employer waiting on you. I don't care about the double standard. If someone is interested in you, strike when the iron is hot! If you ever feel rushed to prepare for an interview, one thing is certain… You did not approach your job search the correct or efficient way. You should never need more than an hour to prepare for an interview. Today, I'm going to tell you why and give you the steps so you will never feel rushed again. Money. Actually, more like money you'll get in the future. Money is funny that way, especially when the money we're talking about is your salary. We negotiate like heck for what we'll be paid in the future. So, why is it that so many employees try to argue for a new salary based on what they did in the past? Isn't that so yesteryear? Wasn't that so your last job? Past performance is not an indicator of future performance when I change the variables. Here's a funny. I earned a nice living as an executive recruiter. Then, I became a career coach. And, well, as smart as that rich executive recruiter guy was, that new career coach didn't know diddly about email marketing, YouTube-ing, podcasting, and TikTok-ing (still don't). I could have argued with myself and said, “Self. You've been awesome at recruitment, sales, serving your clients, and everything else that goes with it. I'm sure you know your stuff and can explain it to all those people who live in Germany, Canada, and California. Here's a big fat raise.” Then, I would have fired myself in the first year. Splat. Career coach guy didn't only not earn more money. He didn't even earn less money. He actually lost money. Ouch! (I'll stop the 3rd-person thing now.) You might be thinking, well, you were making a career change, so that makes sense. Okay, but why do you think you should get a new payday because you're doing the SAME job as last year? Or, the same job at a new employer? Why should your current employer give you more money for doing the same thing? Inflation? Don't think so. Oh, you got a fat promotion? Or more responsibilities? Ah. Heck to the YEAH! So, that means you're in a new position? How can I, your boss, know for certain you'll do well? (Remember, past performance is a funny thing and we have some new variables here.) I think you get the gist by now. Good news is I won't be the one you'll need to negotiate your raise with. Better news is I'm giving you the what-to-do to earn more money—in the future. Think of me with every paycheck that is auto-deposited into your bank account. We're about to wrap up a big month for hiring. How's your job search coming?! I hope you're getting those interviews and, today, I have a not-so-little something special to help. I'm covering one of my all-time favorite questions to ask an employer in a job interview… “What does success look like—exactly?” If you don't know what success looks like, how will you know what goals to shoot for? How would you know whether you're working toward the right results? How would you—or THEY—know how to “grade” your performance? It absolutely amazes me any organization can function, let alone survive, without knowing the answer to this question for every single person it employs. BUT (you knew this was coming), you and I know this happens frequently. Now, I already told you the question—which is the main theme for today's lesson. But, how could I have possibly spent 26:32 on this ONE question? Because, THIS question will become the centerpiece of your entire job search. And (taking a giant deep breath here to say all this all without pausing so please forgive the upcoming run-on sentence)… THIS question will make you successful if you focus on it from the time you think about what you want to do with your career to writing your resume and cover letters and LinkedIn profile to choosing which companies and people you target, how you get the interviews, what you say to those nice people in the interviews, and…when you finally ask this question in the interview…to confirm you know what success looks like and on you go to the counteroffer. I'm pretty sure that's how I lay it out and everything I ultimately cover in this action-packed, highly-education, pivotal lesson. Get ready to change the way you think about job searching! Today, let's talk how to answer negative job interview questions. These are brutal. Tricky. And, to boot, give you loads of opportunity to mess us. They are literally a complete waste of breath and give the interviewer absolutely zero data on whether you'll be a star employee. But, for some unknown reason, instead of asking you bright and effective questions that elicit information to actually help them determine whether you'll be a winner, they ask you… If we hire you, what would be the reason we fire you? Why should we not hire you? Why wouldn't you take this job? Etc. etc. etc. until your eyeballs roll so high they get stuck in the back of your head. You get the idea. Good news is your beloved coach will give you a bulletproof formula for all of these dumb and useless questions. Take a listen! Ever been snookered by a fake job? I mean, if you know you have? You might have been hoodwinked and didn't even know it. Perhaps you applied and silence. I glanced over a survey from Resume Builder very recently (not a site I recommend, but they ran the survey so what the hey?). A few key findings... 40% of companies posted a fake job listing this year. 30% of companies currently have active fake listings. 70% of hiring managers believe posting fake jobs is morally acceptable. Their rationale… Hiring managers say fake job postings led to boosted revenue, morale, and productivity and alleviate employee workload concerns. They indicate “company growth” as one of the top reasons behind fake job posting strategy. Sure. So, you know these fakers are out there. Now, how can you spot them and what can you do about it? Today, you get a podcast on The Job Interview Formula Guaranteed to Get You Hired (CAAR). It's titled that because, well, it's an actual formula, which, if you use it, I pinky swear, you'll get hired. It literally, IMHO, is one of, if not, THE, very best podcasts I've created on how to answer questions—like ANY question—in a job interview. I cover the emotional and feelings aspect of it. I cover the step-by-step tactics. And encore with a very-detailed example to drive it home so it registers with zero distortion! Where might I learn something like this? Well, I coach, individually, approximately 500 people each year. Every year. Most of whom need interview coaching from me. To boot, I've been studying interviewing since 2004 as an executive recruiter. That's excluding the week-long behavioral interview coaching and roleplaying I endured way back in 1990. (1-9-9-0 just so you know that what's a typo.) You'll also need to disregard all the hiring I did up until 2004. Even so, I'm confident that leaves me with enough experience based on whatever's left over. Did I mention I wrote a book on this? Can we agree I've had lots of practice? Good! Now, enjoy… If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Coming at you today with a more-powerful-than-usual talk about success. Hard work might get you there. Might. But, after working with and observing about a bajillion people, I've learned why some just seem to have it all and others live in a state of wonderment. Perspective. That one thing actually changes the way you approach, well, everything. Perspective when it comes to gratitude has a way of providing you an overarching head start on life. There are perspectives, however, that go along with different aspects of your career and life that can trip you up. Hence, why I needed to cover 7 of them in today's lesson. By simply changing your perspective in the way you look at something you can ignite a fire in yourself that wasn't there a minute ago. Inside today's podcast, I hit reasons why you don't start new challenges or improve your skills. I covered resources you should never forget whenever you make any decision and just how dang close you are to a person that'll change your life (even when you think you have no network). I didn't stop there! I went through time wasters that drag you down (they're not social media) and safety nets and more. I hope you enjoy it. It's a doozy! Are you getting job interviews? Any? Let me give you a hand. In today's podcast, I teach the concepts and tactics that get recruiters and hiring officials and whomever else is reviewing your resume to WANT to speak with you. It's not just a do-this and do-that lesson. I go into, as I usually do, the WHYS and WHEREFORES and other important factors that most people don't think about. Writing your resume requires sales skills, marketing skills, an advanced understanding of human psychology, and a basic understanding of biochemistry. Okay. I might have gotten carried away there on the biochemistry thing. But, you get the idea. These sales and marketing skills are ones you likely don't earn a salary for, but make or break you when you're trying to get a new job and salary! A little catch-22-ish, eh? That's alright because you have me. And this podcast. If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Got asked a great question a few weeks back at Live Office Hours. The person asked if he should stay at his company or transition every 3-4 years. He has aspirations of being a CEO at some point in the future and was wondering whether the variety or longevity would better position him. Have you ever wondered this? You might be thinking, well, Andy, I just need a job. This is moot at the moment. Or, hey, Andy, you're a mind-reader! Well, what do I often say? “Your trajectory matters much more than where you are at any moment in time […] any moment in time is just that. It's over in an instant.” You will eventually be faced with a scenario like this. And, even if it's just a matter of changing jobs, you'll benefit from the philosophy, whys, wherefores, whats, and how-to-thinks in today's video clip. Take in at your leisure so you can stay on that not-so-leisurely, skyrocket-like trajectory! Skills. You have ‘em. I know you do. Can you demonstrate them? Do you know which ones to shine the light on? It's important. Always. Just more important now. Inflation is hovering around 6%. Unemployment is roughly 3.6%. Our US Fed is trying to manage inflation by raising interest rates. We're trying the disinflation thing which means a slowdown in the rate of inflation even though inflation is still positive. The last 10 times this happened, for every 2% reduction in inflation, unemployment went up 3.6%. (That's historical fact.) It's linear-ish, so each 2% drop in inflation means 3.6% increase in unemployment. So, let's carry a few numbers. That means if we want to get back down to ~ 2% inflation, we might be adding 7.2% to the unemployment rate = 10.8%. Ouch. I bet when you opened this email you didn't think you'd be getting an econ lesson! Don't worry. You have me. You read my messages. You prolly watch my videos and join my live shows. You're covered. Ever wonder how to change careers? Meet Tracey. She was at her new job in her new career for a short while when she and I connected on this. She couldn't wait to tell me about it. Before I turn you loose on the valuable, DOZENS of lessons she shares, let me set the table for you on her challenges… She's in the early stages of her professional life and lives in New York in the US. She had umpteen challenges while trying to change not only jobs, but careers. Here are just a few of her issues, for editorial purposes, I think will hit home: Big career change: She was a performance artist and fitness trainer and wanted to support an ESG organization in an analytical capacity. No experience in the new career: She had virtually no hands-on experience related to these types of organizations or working in the kinds of roles she was interested in pursuing. "Wrong" education: While educated, her studies didn't align to the change she wanted to make, so she needed to quickly supplement her resume with certifications and courses. Narrative issues: During her networking, many people told her, "I don't get your background. I'm not sure how you'll fit." So, she needed to get her storytelling in order and “feed the funnel!” So? What did she do about it? Listen to today's podcast as she shares exactly how she planned for and approached it, what she did, and what transpired. It's January, which translates to high recruitment season. That means employers are interviewing candidates like crazy. Even so, it's not exactly like shooting fish in a barrel if your résumé isn't up to snuff. No matter what month or year it is, you need to put a killer résumé together to not only show potential employers the value you can contribute, but also set the best table for yourself when you get into the interview. What do I always say? “Whenever you set out to do something, plan to win.” Winning in this case means you're going to get the interview AND job offer. The problem is most job candidates don't think this many moves down the pipe. They hope for an interview. They hope they'll do well when they get into the interview. They don't concentrate on planting all the seeds throughout the entire interviewing process to ensure they have the most leverage when they actually receive the job offer. Well, today, you're in luck because I've got a spectrum of goodies that cover how to make your résumé standout by putting in it exactly what employers want to know. Because I'm so confident they want to know this, I'm certain they'll ask you about it in the interview. That's why I'm not only going to show you what goes into the résumé as it relates to your bullet points, but also how to turn those bullets into interview stories. I even have a case study in there for you! Join me for today's podcast how to make your résumé stand out and interview stories shine in 2023! Have you ever taken a job and wondered what they hey???? The employer lied to me in the interview! This company is so not congenial, autonomous, collaborative. There is no work/life balance and the deadlines are horrific. What gives? I'll tell you what gives. You didn't ask very good questions. Or, you didn't ask your questions the right way. It is my belief (prolly because I have faith in people) interviewers do not lie to you in the interview. They respond to the questions you ask, based on the way you ask them, and offer insight into what they think you want to know. Sounds reasonable to me. BUT, as in a capital BUT, you need to ask your questions so you're eliciting proof of their behavior. You assess their behavior—and likely what you're getting yourself into—based on actual evidence not theories or circumstantial information. Trackin'? Wanna know how? Right now, it's hiring silly season for employers and they're interviewing job candidates like crazy. Don't believe any career coach who tells you to slow down your search. Everyone is SO NOT out on holiday. Companies are panicking because they're looking at their 2023 budgets and wondering where on Earth they're gonna get all the great new employees to work those projects. I keep telling every employer I know they don't need to look any further than Andy's community! Amiright? How about today I give you one very sweet video to help you impress the job interviewer over and over and over until your new payday? I'll cover how to capture their attention right after you get the obligatory “Hello!” outta your mouth? And, when you intro yourself “at length!” And, how about when you answer a “real” job interview question? And, when YOU ask a question! And, when you close the deal! It's tough to dazzle and dazzle and dazzle, but it won't be after today. Join me for this week's new podcast on How to Impress the Job Interviewers at Every Stage! Is your network helping you? They want to. More than you know. They just need a little help from you. It's true. I've talked long and hard about this throughout the years. Put oh so many videos and podcasts out there on the Internet-z about networking. Let's see… I've talked about how to network when you're job searching, turning applications into networking opps, using networking groups, fixing referral mistakes, and, of course, how to actually build a professional network. I even talked about crafting the perfect networking message. You can check out an entire playlist here if you want. Today, I'm bringing you a podcast on why it's so important to be networking right now. Whether you're job searching, building your network for the future, or applying to college (yes, this too!), networking works if you do it the right way! Many want it. The good life. The few. They want the great life. The rest. What's left. You guessed it. They pursue heights so high that most people dismiss them as unattainable. Whichever group you're in, I know you'll eventually pursue some personal Mount Everest. You know the one I'm talking about. The one that, somewhere along the climb, makes you question your choices. Whether it's a project that takes a week that seems like “the longest week ever” or 20 years to pursue your life's dream, you're gonna encounter the “B” word. If you haven't encountered the B word, you're probably settling. Ouch. True. Burnout happens. Ask anyone who's pursued a worthy dream. It's not if. It's when. No shortcut ever gave you what you deserved nor ever will. The long and worthy road is filled with a few…”Hang on. I gotta catch my breaths.” I want to help you make sure you get what you deserve, so I'm giving you a bit of my formula on how I manage to “enjoy the doing” during the lengthy pursuits of my biggest goals. Join me and Celia for How to Avoid Burnout when Working Toward Your Goals! Ever feel like you're working hard on your job search, but you're not getting the output you'd expect? Or, maybe you're just not sure how to allocate your time each day to search? You might have all day to work your job search or only an hour in the evening. Either way, I'd like to help you get more out of your time and effort. A few weeks ago, one of my #BOOTCAMPERS Cisco asked… “Time management and routine when job searching is key as we all know it. Networking, boss hunting, etc. will need to take a significant chunk of our time. [….] How do you recommend we balance our time and energy because I often feel guilty for not spending all my time on “feeding the funnel” versus [other activities] which have actual [long-term] measurable value and deliverables?” Do you feel this way or wonder this? Good news. This week's podcast is my conversation with Cisco on how I apply this in my life and how I suggest approaching it in your job search. Enjoy How to Improve Your Job Search Productivity and let's start getting you more job interviews and offers! I have this expression whenever I undertake something new. Mind you, this is something I say to myself AND I only say it after I'm certain of two things. First, I'm getting great instruction from someone who actually knows what they're doing. (You don't always find the right coach on your first attempt. Unless you found me on your first attempt. Then, lucky you. Ha ha!) Second, I've made a commitment to the effort. Once those prerequisites are in order, I tell myself… “Shut up and put in the reps.” That's my north-side-of-Chicago-neighborhood-y way of saying, “Don't question stuff yet. Get in there. Do the work. Build the discipline. Gather the data. Then adjust only after you've experienced and know more.” Until I reach that point, I haven't earned the right to question anything. When it comes to job searching, I gave you the put-in-the-reps formula to help you find your dream job the fastest. I did that all the way back in November 2018 and again in the summer of 2019 and then again in the fall of 2019. It's my Job Search Challenge®, which I designed so you would know which activities within the job search actually lead to the results you want. As a quick recap, I distilled it down into manageable activities: Target 3 companies (potential employers) each day. Identify one individual in those 3 companies each day (e.g., boss, senior person, HR, recruiter, teammate). Send a thoughtful message in the direction of, if not directly to, those individuals each day. Easy breezy. A put-in-the-reps kinda formula that is simple enough to understand with a narrow-enough focus to keep you concentrated on the right activities. Plus, you can easily gather insight and data to assess what is working or make the proper adjustments. It works. Let's say you believe me… It's 2022. You might think we live in a totally different world now. But, 99.9% of what I teach you will never go out of style. Even so, I'm always looking to amp up my game and I want you to amp up yours. So, I've created a next-level-job-search-challenge that goes beyond the shut-up-and-put-in-the-reps techniques. It's my hope this advanced approach will go beyond helping you achieve the results you want. I want you to not only experience the job search, but also gain all the benefits this experience can offer you. Don't just job search. That might lead to just a job. Truly experience what you're doing so that experience and the benefits you receive because of it continue to pay you back for the rest of your life. Make sure before you take in this episode today you listen to the Job Search Challenge® Put-In-The-Reps Version (Part 1). And, of course, enjoy the souped-up Job Search Challenge® | Advanced Level Tactics Version (Part 2). Go get ‘em. Job searching is hard, like, really hard. It's even hard in the best of times, which we have now seasonally entered. November through February. That's right. Start licking your chops. It's officially open season on all things finding-your-dream-job related. Where I live the weather stinks this time of year, but finding that sweet job in never easier than in these months. Wait. Whaaaa? Doesn't feel like it? Fact of the matter is, it makes no difference what the employment market looks like, what month it is, or what holiday the world is or isn't celebrating if you don't know HOW to job search! Enter my—proven—job search challenge®. I'm in the mood to make some promises so let's do just that. If… …you do what I challenge you to do and simply follow the steps (heck, just go through the motions but you get bonus points for positive energy), you will get traction. Bold words. I know. How do I know? Because it's been proven over and over and over again by people just like you. Yes. The ones that are, uh, in my age group. Yes. The ones that live in rural places without all those booming companies. Yes. The ones without all the “required” skills on those ridiculous job descriptions. Yes. Those returning to the workforce after being away because [plop in any reason here]. Yes. Those people who [insert whatever you can think of here] too! What's more, if you take the challenge, you will even surprise yourself at how easy it becomes to email total strangers. (Don't get me started on how I think strangers are just friends I haven't met yet.) You'll become more consistent, confident, care-free, and a whole bunch of other cool “C” words. Gimme 36 minutes for today's podcast on a Job Search Challenge® That Gets Interviews! Here's another promise. It'll be worth it. I have a saying. It's one of my Today's Lines to Live By®, which you can catch daily on my Instagram. “Short-timers focus on wins. Long-timers focus on plans.” That's true. Short-timers focus on wins, which usually causes them to lose. And quit. That's how they become short-timers. Get it? Long-timers focus on the plan and the planning process. And, they obsess over abilities they need to grow to add cool checkmarks next to the stuff on their plans. This, in turn, causes them to grow faster, live happier existences, and, oddly, win more. Or, at least win bigger. Build strategy. Add plans. Work the plans. Stay the course. There is one ingredient in working a top-1-%-er plan I consider the secret to the sauce. Do you wonder what employers want to know about you? That answer is actually quite simple. But, making sure you know what that is and delivering the message so they receive it with zero distortion? Well, that's the stuff legends are made of. Or, members of Andy's community! At least after today. It's not just here's who I am, here's what I do, here's how I can help you. Yawn. Getting hired is about so much more than having a shiny resume with all the right keywords. It's about so much more than telling great interview stories. There are stars that must align. There is a level of congruence that begins with what you've accomplished historically, what you want presently, how you package it up in your marketing messages so it hits what the employer needs, and how you drive home your worth during the job interviews. Job seekers screw this up because there's often something broken along this chain. In today's podcast on How to Show Your Value to Employers so You Get Hired, I teach how to get rid of any weak links and hit the bulls-eye on exactly what employers want to know! You just couldn't do it. You just couldn't hold back your expected salary like Coach wanted you to. You caved. Dang. Well, the bad news is at some point in the interview process—whether in the beginning, middle, or right before the new employer wanted to extend a job offer—you slipped and blurted out, well, anything! The good news for you is I'm your Coach and I not only love you, but have a trick in my bag for everything. I mean e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g! I'm like your personal, little, Swiss-Army knife for all things career-related. Confused about asking questions in a job interview? Thinking, “But, Coach, they only gave me 3 minutes to ask my questions in the interview. What's up with that?” (So what.) “Ok. This time they gave me 10 minutes. How many questions should I ask?” (Talk fast.) “How do I not incriminate myself or burst my awesomeness?” (You won't.) “How will I know if they're lying to me?” (They don't.) So on. So forth. So confusing! I get it. The only difference between you and me, beside the fact I have four crazy dachshunds that boss me around all day, is I've conducted or witnessed or debriefed more than 20,000 job interviews. Yes, I'm old. But, I'm your old fogie. And, I have the goods. And I ain't afraid to share them with you. Has an employer ever lowballed you? This could be for a job offer for your new employment. It can be a promotion and pay “raise.” Really anything where you think you deserve A LOT more. Well, the bad news is you got lowballed. The good news is I help you with exactly what to do when this happens. The first thing before we get all huffy and puffy about it is to understand the situation. That's right. Perspective goes a long way. Information goes a long way. Put the two together and you can go, well, pretty darn far. If you maintain composure and ask the super-duper, right-to-the-heart question I serve up in this week's podcast, you'll nail this. Ever have difficulty deciding which interview story to tell? You get asked a question and you're left to choose the example you give. Tough one! You start wondering should I choose a recent story? But, the oldie from 20 years ago is truly a goodie. Longer one? Maybe shorter is better. Go strategic? Tactical? Should I try to showcase one big talent? A few good talents? Choose the correct story and all you need to do is tell the story well. (Sure, easy enough for me to say.) Choose incorrectly and, well, game over. Maybe not that bad. Or maybe… Hey, just teasing you a little. But, you know I'm a pleaser not a teaser. Well, Phil and Shaun are neither of these… So instead, they delve into a few practical A.I. tools that can be utilized for everyday use like video editing, copywriting, music production, customer service. They discuss how A.I. can help assist in simple tasks, why A.I. will never replace creative professionals, and the usefulness and shortcomings of a few of these tools. Plus, why AI-generated customer service is the worst! Also, when life imitates art, and how sci-fi movies and shows like Star Trek and The Jetsons are becoming a reality. I sit down with Dan Riordan, a business executive and expert with extensive experience building start-up organizations, and author of the book "Signals" for my latest podcast episode.
