So many of us have experienced depression, and if not, we're likely to have seen people we love battle it. In this week's classic episode, author KATE LUCEY, who specialises in writing about mental health, talks candidly with Andrew about her own depression and the six-year journey she's been on since her diagnosis: including physical symptoms and the effects on her personal relationships.  Kate and Andrew also take a deep dive into what depression means - what might cause it, how therapy can help, and some exercises that have helped Kate manage when feeling overwhelmed.  Kate Lucey is an author, journalist and public speaker, who has been at the forefront of opening up the conversation about mental health. Kate also specialises in helping brands talk to millennials. Her most recent book is Get a Grip, Love: and Other Helpful Mental Health Advice  “a candid book that uses a mix of colloquial chat, peer and personal experience, and expert advice to talk about tackling mental illness as part of the generation so often poked fun at for having feelings – and who often call themselves out for it, too”. Most of us dislike or even fear conflict with loved ones. Without it, however, you won't achieve sustained intimacy with your partner.  This week, Andrew talks to writer, psychologist and Jungian analyst Polly Young-Eisendrath, the author of Love Between Equals: Relationship as a Spiritual Path. They explore the challenges and possibilities of building partnerships based on respect, freedom and real dialogue.  Andrew and Polly discuss: What “real dialogue” means—and how to practice mindful curiosity with your partner. How and why to stop avoiding conflict with your partner. Projective identification in relationships.  What to do if you're feeling defeated or distant in your relationship.  Polly Young-Eisendrath, Ph.D., is the founder of the Center for Real Dialogue in Vermont and the author of 19 books. Are you one of the many people who end up shocked by the ultimate similarity of romantic relationships that felt very different starting out? Why is it that we find the same patterns repeating, the same problems coming up over and over? In this classic episode, Andrew talks to author and attachment theory specialist Tara Blair-Ball. Tara explains how attachment theory - which is grounded in analysis of how we bonded to our mother as infants - can explain these patterns. Andrew and Tara emphasise that rather than dwelling on the particular faults of partner A and partner B, we can try to understand how our earliest relationships in life have determined later ones. This will help us make the changes that can lead to more meaningful and more fulfilling relationships.  Tara Blair Ball is a Certified Relationship Coach, as well as the author of several books on love and relationships. Get Andrew's book here: https://press.uchicago.edu/.../chicago/K/bo245100866.html   In Karl Marx in America, historian Andrew Hartman argues that even though Karl Marx never visited America, the country has been infused, shaped, and transformed by him. Since the beginning of the Civil War, Marx has been a specter in the American machine. During the Gilded Age, socialists read Marx as an antidote to the unchecked power of corporations. In the Great Depression, communists turned to Marx in hopes of transcending the destructive capitalist economy. The young activists of the 1960s were inspired by Marx as they gathered to protest an overseas war. Marx's influence today is evident, too, as Americans have become increasingly attuned to issues of inequality, labor, and power.   After decades of being pushed to the far-left corner of intellectual thought, Marx's ideologies have crossed over into the mainstream and are more alive than ever. Working-class consciousness is on the rise, and, as Marx argued, the future of a capitalist society rests in the hands of the people who work at the point of production. A valuable resource for anyone interested in Marx's influence on American political discourse, Karl Marx in America is a thought-provoking account of the past, present, and future of his philosophies in American society.   Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. How can we learn to be at ease in our bodies so that we can be fully “in the moment” during sex? Anxiety about body image is one of the biggest obstacles to a happy, fulfilled sex life. Many people seek therapy to help them relax and enjoy sex with their partner, others struggle on in low-sex or no-sex relationships.  In this classic episode, Andrew talks to KATE MOYLE, a psychosexual and relationship therapist, about the knots we tie ourselves up in over how we look. Our culture's esteem for youth and beauty, (expressed in social media images of physical perfection) can make it very hard to inhabit our normal, imperfect bodies. Yet the self-confidence we need to enjoy sex is grounded in how we feel, not how we look.  As well as her work as a therapist, Kate Moyle is host of The Sexual Wellness Sessions Podcast, and also appeared on BBC Three's Sex on the Couch. Kate helps people to work through challenges in their sex lives and relationships; moving towards a place of sexual health, happiness and wellbeing. Her podcast hosts discussions that focus on normalising sex and relationships talk, and tackling the topics that are often left out of mainstream conversation; and she is a regular media contributor on the topic of sex and relationships. When did you last learn to do something totally and utterly new? Tom Vanderbilt, author of Beginners: the Joy and Transformative Power of Lifelong Learning, was awestruck by his young daughter's insatiable need to know how to do almost everything. He was inspired by her to embark on a year of learning purely for its own sake. Tom had a truly unique year - a circuitous journey of learning, in which he attempted to learn chess, singing, surfing, drawing and juggling. These skills were chosen on the basis of difficulty and lack of marketability.  Tom found that his new sense of curiosity opened him up to a profound happiness and a deeper connection to the people around him. By reinventing himself in small ways, life began to seem more magical. In this classic episode Andrew and Tom talk about just why it is that so many of us stop learning new skills as adults. While we're encouraging our children to be adventurous and to try new things, are we ourselves afraid of failure? Have we forgotten the pleasure and rewards of starting from scratch? Is Christian Nationalism the biggest threat to America today? James Carville, political guru and strategist who got Bill Clinton elected president twice, thinks it's "more dangerous than Al-Qaeda." Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has said the separation of church and state is a “misnomer.” Congresswoman Lauren Boebert thinks it's “junk.” And the US Supreme Court itself is insidiously inching towards their premise. With MAGA evangelicals more enthusiastic than ever about the Second Coming of Donald Trump, it's time to talk about why 2024 could be one of the most defining years in America's history. In this episode of Unlicensed Therapist, we speak to constitutional attorney and widely acclaimed author Andrew Seidel — his books "The Founding Myth: Why Christian Nationalism is Un-American" and "American Crusade: How the Supreme Court is Weaponizing Religious Freedom," are essential reading. The self-help industry is a massive industry. And for good reason: Self-help can teach you how to be the cause in your life rather than the effect. It shows you that you can change your life's direction and outlook.  But what if self-help doesn't work for you? What if you've read all the books, and still find yourself stuck?  The unfortunate truth is many that travel down the self-help road find themselves at this fork in the road. Today's guest, Andrew Daniel is the epitome of this.  Why? A few weeks after publishing his first book, Andrew found himself homeless, repeating affirmations to himself that he'd be successful. Only later did he realize he was constantly lying to himself and living in a fantasy world. The self-help industry failed Andrew—as it has for millions of others too.  This came to a head for Andrew when he saw his body move on a video: Despite telling himself he was confident and secure, his body and movements proved otherwise. To quote Andrew himself, “It doesn't matter what you think up in your head, it matters how you're showing up in your body.”  After stumbling upon this realization, he figured out the missing ingredient from the world of self-help: Its teachings stop in the mind—but the body is how you harness this information to actually improve your life.  In today's episode, Andrew and I discuss: The booby traps of the self-help industry that are keeping you stuck Why your physical body is more important for your self-help journey than your mind  How to feel your way through life instead of thinking your way through  And so much more.  Tired of reading self-help books only to get further stuck?  Listen now.  Show highlights include:  Why reading a New York Times Bestselling self-help book is almost always a waste of time (and what to do instead to actually improve your life) (8:52) What the entire self-help industry gets wrong—and how Andrew Daniel stumbled upon the missing ingredient that makes self-help effective (13:11)  The “Egoic Intellectual's Pain” men feel after an emotionally traumatizing experience which can ruin your relationships and hinder your happiness (23:33) How to overcome painful situations in life without endless suffering attached (27:48)  How to reveal your deepest subconscious patterns by simply shaking your hands in the air (41:24)  The weird way your mind binds you to an unreal past (and why this creates suffering out of thin air) (55:06)  The “Cinesomatics” system Andrew created for using your body as the ultimate self-development tool (1:01:13)  How the “Story Stop” method pulls you out of your suffering and injects you into your body (1:10:54)  The insidious core belief behind imposter syndrome and self-sabotage which becomes even more deadly after achieving your version of success (1:14:48)  The “Stop Fixing & Start Living” body shift for making all your problems disappear (1:18:03)  Resources mentioned in this episode:  1. I love studying great coaches, both past and present. That being said, I'm also aware of the lack of good coaching at various levels, including for our youth. Man, some of the stories I hear still shock me and it's no wonder why so many young athletes end up hating their sport, or clubs, or competitive teams…and have just a bad experience. Or the young athlete gets so anxious and stressed from the pressure they feel that it ends up hurting them in multiple ways.. And it doesn't have to be this way!   Today I want to talk to the athletes. And the coaches. And the parents. And I want to bring on one of my most esteemed colleagues when it comes to dealing with youth athletics and coaching. His name is Andrew Simpson and he is creating extraordinary IMPACT in youth athletics. As a matter of fact, his newest book, “ATHLETE! I'm Talking to You” just came out and he's on a crusade to help kids of all ages have much better physical AND mental experiences playing youth sports.    Here are some of the things Andrew and I discuss on today's IMPACT SHOW: - The 7 Mindset Hacks to dominate sports and life for kids. - Why Andrew's first book (The Youth Truth) is even more relevant right now. - Why Andrew wrote his new book “ATHLETE! I'm Talking to You” and how thousands of athletes will be helped because of the book. - Why parents MUST read this book…and then pass it or recommend it to their “favorite” coaches. - How adversity can prove to be an advantage for a young athlete and how these lessons transcend into later life. - How to take back control of your life, since so many young athletes often spiral “out of control” and their mental state significantly is diminished. - Practical tips for athletes and how to document your accomplishments, progress, wins, and challenges. - We (Andrew and I) role play and give coaching to the athletes for specific situations.   Parents, athletes, and coaches… if there was ever a podcast to share in today's world for the mindset of our youth, it's THIS one. Help spread the gospel and help make our youth athlete experiences better. Take a picture of this episode and please post on your IG Stories. Please tag Andrew Simpson and me so we can reciprocate some love.    Tag us at: Instagram/Twitter: @ToddDurkin @coachandrewsimpson   Noteworthy Quote:   “You're only as happy as your saddest child.”  -Larry Indiviglia     About Andrew Simpson: Andrew Simpson and his team at Player's Fitness and Performance have ignited a movement across the globe to help millions of student-athletes regain confidence, restore joy and passion, and perform at peak potential without suffering the debilitating mental health challenges so many kids are facing today. After nearly dying from an ectopic pregnancy, writer Georgina Scull confronted some of life's big questions: Why do we drift through life, planning for tomorrow but not living for today?  Why do we stay in relationships that no longer make us content, or in jobs that fill us with dread?  Why do we allow our doubts to stop us trying new things, or let people treat us badly? Georgina chose to answer these questions in a unique way: she created a podcast and then a book in which she interviewed people who were dying. She asked each interviewee about their regrets, which ranged from long-lost love never pursued, to leaving behind children too young to remember their mother.  In this episode, Andrew and Georgina discuss what we can learn from the dying, and the many reasons for living in the moment rather than chasing the perfect body, the next promotion or a bigger house.   Follow Up Read Andrew's new Substack newsletter and join the community there. Doing a lot of things won't get you where you want to go. According to “Digital Dale Carnegie” and best-selling author Erik Qualman, it's become increasingly hard to achieve the things that mean the most to us. Modern life splinters our attention span and makes it extremely challenging to hone in on what matters.  Erik Qualman interviewed hundreds of people for his book, The Focus Project, including parents, teachers and entrepreneurs. They all felt that success depended on the extent to which they had been able to focus on their goals.  In this episode, Andrew and Erik talk about how to do the important things, rather than doing too many things. In fact, doing LESS is likely to leave you more successful and more fulfilled. Erik Qualman is a five times best-selling author and keynote speaker. He has spoken in over 55 countries and was voted the second most likeable author in the world. His work on Socialnomics has been used by organisations including NBC and NASA. He has an honorary doctorate for his work on the digital universe, and is the founder of Equalman Studios. Follow Up   Read Andrew's new Substack newsletter and join the community there.
