Summary In this episode, Andy talks with Steve Jaffe, author of The Layoff Journey: From Dismissal to Discovery. Steve has been laid off four times over the course of his career, and those experiences shaped a thoughtful, practical framework for navigating the emotional and professional aftermath of job loss. Andy and Steve explore why layoffs feel so personal even when we are told they are not, how identity often gets tangled up with job titles, and why the emotional response to a layoff closely mirrors the stages of grief. Steve explains why those stages are not linear, what denial, pain, and negotiation really look like in practice, and why trying to rush straight to acceptance can backfire. You will also hear practical advice for leaders who must conduct layoffs, as well as guidance for professionals who worry they might be laid off in the future. From preserving dignity in difficult conversations to preparing financially, emotionally, and professionally before uncertainty hits, this discussion offers insight for both sides of the table. If you are navigating uncertainty, supporting others through change, or simply want to be better prepared for whatever comes next, this episode is for you! Sound Bites "I wanted to give people a roadmap to process their layoff and the grief of their layoff in months rather than years." "One of the things that makes losing a job difficult is we tie our identity up in what we do." "And then in that period, before you've landed your next job, you're in this messy middle of Who am I?" "Define yourself not by what you do, but by who you are and what you bring to the table." "I've seen people be named Employee of the Year in January, and by June they're getting laid off." "Layoffs don't measure your worth. They measure a company's priorities." "The stages of grief are not linear. You can feel all of them in one day." "Your job title is not who you are." "Acceptance can become a way to skip discomfort instead of dealing with loss." "If you don't process the grief, it shows up later as baggage." "Dignity matters in the first minutes of a layoff conversation." "You want to build your network before you need it." "The person you were before a layoff will not be the same person after." Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:45 Start of Interview 02:00 From First Layoff to Fourth: Taking It Personally 02:50 How the Layoff Process Has Changed Over Time 06:52 The Messy Middle Between Job Loss and What's Next 10:40 Why the Stages of Grief Apply to Layoffs 14:07 What Denial Looked Like in Steve's Experience 17:19 Balancing Emotional Honesty and Professional Reputation 22:08 The Quote That Opens the Book 23:00 Can You Jump to Acceptance Too Quickly? 24:58 When Past Layoffs Create Baggage at the Next Job 26:42 Advice for Leaders Who Have to Do Layoffs 28:55 Handling Performance-Based Separations with Integrity 30:40 How to Prepare Now If You Worry About Being Laid Off 32:46 End of Interview 33:33 Andy Comments After the Interview 37:37 Outtakes Learn More You can learn more about Steve and his work at TheSteveJaffe.com. Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job

Check out the podcast on Macslist here: (https://www.macslist.org/?post_type=podcasts&p=16513&preview=true) Negotiating a job offer shapes far more than your first day on the job. On this week's episode of Find Your Dream Job, HR expert Marcia Torres shares why your starting salary influences future raises, bonuses, and long-term earning potential — and why employers expect candidates to ask questions, review their offers carefully, and advocate for what they need. Marcia also talks about the value of taking 24 hours to read through an offer, getting clear on your bottom line, and using reliable salary data to understand where you should land in a range. She then walks through what candidates can negotiate beyond base pay, including job titles, professional development funds, PTO, and other benefits that make up a full compensation package. Marcia offers practical, down-to-earth guidance on how to approach these conversations collaboratively, build rapport with recruiters, and make a thoughtful decision about your next role. Finding a job in today's economy can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to face it alone. With interest rates remaining high and the job market slowing, this is a strategic moment to refresh your job search. By combining diligence, adaptability, and prayerful preparation, you can approach this season with confidence rooted in God's wisdom.Proverbs 27:12 reminds us: “The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.” Preparation matters—not just in life but in your job search. With the right approach, you can steward your time, skills, and relationships wisely while trusting God to guide your steps.A great place to start is your resume. Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) filter applications before a human ever reviews them, so tailoring your resume to each job description is essential. Use specific keywords, highlight measurable results, and connect your experience directly to the role. Think of it as stewardship—presenting your God-given abilities thoughtfully and effectively.Building Relationships That Open DoorsEven in a digital age, networking is still king. Studies show up to 85% of jobs are filled through referrals, and many roles are never posted publicly. Reconnect with colleagues, reach out to mentors, and don't overlook your church community. Genuine, relational conversations—built on curiosity rather than transaction—often lead to opportunities you couldn't find otherwise.Employers are also seeking adaptable learners. Developing skills in areas like AI, digital communication, or project management shows you're willing to grow. Affordable platforms like Coursera, edX, and Google Career Certificates make it easy to build new skills that employers value.Standing Out in a Digital WorldYour online presence is often the first impression an employer has. More than 70% of hiring managers review social media profiles, and nearly half say what they find influences their decision. Clean up questionable content, complete your LinkedIn profile, and stay active with thoughtful updates. Treat it as your digital business card—when you remain visible, opportunities are more likely to find you.Interviews have also shifted online. Prepare your space, dress professionally, and look into the camera to build connection. Small details—like lighting, posture, and a thank-you note afterward—leave a lasting impact.Trusting God in the ProcessA slowing job market can stir up fear, but Philippians 4:6–7 offers comfort: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”Preparation and diligence matter, but so do prayer and trust. God orders your steps. Every interview, every connection, and every opportunity is part of His greater story for your life. Search faithfully, not fearfully, knowing He is your ultimate provider. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:What is the statute of limitations for a collection agency to pursue a debt I still owe?I'm thinking about applying for Social Security Disability because of a physical condition from my recent job. Remember, Over the last 14 years, I have done everything I can to help as many#jobseekers as possible via Power Point presentations, documents , speaking engagements and now LinkedIn presentations that LinkedIn promotes for me. I also, whenever possible, scroll down my feed and every time I see a person that is #opentowork, I drop an invite to my next #LinkedInLive event or if I am not having one my #YouTube page that has hundreds of videos and audio events. I know that I have helped thousands of people in some way to get out of the canyon called #Unemployment and back into the job world. I could've charged a lot of money to a lot of people over the years because my stuff works and it works fast if you are someone that goes and attacks challenges. I don't charge people a lot of money because they need their money to eat and pay their rent and provide for their family when they are unemployed because they don't know when that nightmare will end. That is why I don't make it a giant moneymaking endeavor. I do this from the heart because I never forget how bad it felt to be unemployed and how awful every day was until I knew what my next job was. That said, I cannot believe when someone is offered free help from someone who has been doing it for as long as I have that they would ignore my invite and not come to the event. All I will say is here is an invite to my next event and if you are a #jobseeker you should come because something I say will help you to get in next great opportunity. It's different for every person, but something will resonate. With all of the people being mistreated and ghosted and punched in the face on this platform by people who have no interest in helping, I offer all I can give you to help you get back on your feet. Check out this post here: https://lnkd.in/g-gavJts. Remember, Over the last 14 years, I have done everything I can to help as many #jobseekers as possible via Power Point presentations, documents , speaking engagements and now LinkedIn presentations that LinkedIn promotes for me. We continue our conversation with the always entertaining Tim Rundel in this second installment. Tim has not just seen a thing or two, he has personally endured some incredibly challenging and professionally traumatic situations. In this powerful episode, he talks about how we as city managers carry the trauma of abuse and betrayal to our next position and that it is quite easy to become "gun shy" or lose your self-confidence. He opens the interview by recounting a conversation with a peer who has recently experienced a couple of brutal and extremely short tenures. And toward the end of the conversation Tim talks about how we as executives need to value ourselves and appreciate our worth. He says "we're the cookie" and we should not be giving it away. If you did not get a chance to catch my first interview with Tim way back in Episode 8 of the podcast, it is a must listen. There's a spectrum of proficiency, and it starts in the worst possible place. That's when you're unconsciously incompetent—you're not good at something, and worse, you don't even know you're bad at it or what to do about it. Think job interviewing. If you put in some effort, you might move to consciously incompetent stage—you know what you should do (like the strategies your dear Coachy Andy teaches), but you're not quite there yet. Fast forward through the grind, and let's skip some steps for email brevity, until you hit the sweet spot: unconsciously competent. That's when you're so good, it's automatic. You're nailing it without even thinking about it. As your coach, I'm here every week to help you climb this spectrum, especially when it comes to building your career. And let's face it—interviewing is one of the biggest hurdles in career advancement. So, we're tackling that head-on this week. Today, we're uncovering the three most brutal interview killers that trip up 99% of job candidates. Spoiler alert: they're all about storytelling. Let's dive into a story first and fix this once and for all… If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Check out the milewalk Academy, my coaching and training site, for freemiums and premiums. 2. I have hundreds of educational and inspirational videos on my YouTube Channel. 3.
