Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is all the rage right now—with varying opinions, thoughts, and questions about what DEI encompasses, its impact, and what the future would look like without it. Ohio State Representative Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Township) joins CCV Policy Director David Mahan and Communications Director Mike Andrews on this week's episode of The Narrative to offer a unique perspective on the fight against DEI! Rep. Williams unpacks what DEI in Ohio's higher education system really looks like and how the passage of Senate Bill 1 through the Ohio House will have lasting effects on the state's education system. Before Rep. Williams joins the conversation, the guys talk about current legislation happening in the Statehouse—how the Innocence Act (HB84) and Cannabis Bill (HB160) are evolving and what these pieces of legislation would mean for Ohio residents. Listen to this week's episode to hear Rep. Williams' testimony and how the Lord is working through him to advance Christ-centered legislation into our state laws. More about Rep. Josh Williams State Representative Josh Williams went from a homeless high school dropout to an attorney, but there were many challenges and obstacles along the way. After dropping out of high school, he went to work to support his young son. He was hurt on the job after falling 30 feet and was disabled for six years because of a serious back injury. Josh credited a change in his mindset as motivation to overcome his injury. After getting his GED, Josh started college at the age of 30. By the time he was 35, he had graduated from the University of Toledo College of Law with his Juris Doctorate (J.D.). He currently teaches constitutional law, criminal law, and criminal procedure in the undergraduate criminal justice programs. As a State Representative, Josh is pursuing reform in the areas that most affect Lucas County residents: workforce development, education, and criminal justice.

Dr. Caleb Bupp. In my opinion. A scientific star.  He is a most humble human, but has every right to brag, but he never would. I do believe he's a genius.  You will love this podcast.  We talk about rare disease, his family and how he discovered and helped families who had no rare disease answers, until they met him! An absolute scientific rock star.  I met Dr. Bupp at a MichiBio event that introduced legislators, advocates and doctors to one another.  One of the best events I have attended and now I can follow Dr. Bupp and watch him change the medical world. Here are his stats: Caleb Bupp, MD, FACMG – Division Chief, Medical Genetics and Genomics.  Dr. Caleb Bupp is a pediatric trained, board-certified medical geneticist with Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He serves as the Division Chief of Medical Genetics and Genomics.  He is also an assistant professor at Michigan State University.  He co-discovered a treatable genetic syndrome caused by ODC1 mutations now termed Bachmann-Bupp syndrome and is the clinical director of the International Center for Polyamine Disorders.  This was recently recognized by the New York Intellectual Property Law Association as their ‘Inventor of the Year' for his patent related to this condition.  He helped create and run Project Baby Deer, a statewide initiative to provide access to rapid whole genome sequencing which resulted in Michigan Medicaid being the first to create an approval and carve-out payment policy. Dr. Bupp helped form the Rare Disease Network which provides support and education throughout Michigan. Dr. Bupp received his Bachelor of Science in molecular biology from Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania and his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine in Ohio.  He completed pediatrics residency at the University of Louisville in Kentucky and his medical genetics training at the Greenwood Genetic Center in South Carolina.Cheers to science and innovation.  Please like, subscribe, and comment on our shows, wherever you get your podcasts. Please consider making a donation: https://thebonnellfoundation.org/donate/The Bonnell Foundation website:https://thebonnellfoundation.orgEmail us at: thebonnellfoundation@gmail.com Thanks to our sponsors:Vertex: https://www.vrtx.comViatris: https://www.viatris.com/en

This is an encore presentation of a speech I gave to a class of P3 students in the “Exploring Novel Careers in Pharmacy” elective at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy during Fall Semester 2023.     This episode is also available via video on my YouTube channel.  YouTube.com/@thepharmacistsvoice or type @thepharmacistsvoice in a YouTube app. The instructor's name is Dr. Michelle Schroeder, and the class was conducted via WebEx.  I had up to 35 minutes to speak about my Novel Career in Pharmacy and 15 minutes for questions, 50 minutes total. Delivering a powerpoint presentation was recommended (but I used Canva), and I was given a list of topics to discuss from my past, present, and future + advice.  I did not speak for the full 35 minutes, and the students were happy to fill the remainder of the class time with questions. They all had good questions, and I share the two that stuck out most to me at the end of this episode.   Thank you for listening to episode 256 of The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast! In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Paul Hood. Paul is a “recovering tax lawyer”. Among many things, he is also a prolific writer. Paul recently published his ninth book, Yours, Mine & Ours: Estate Planning for People in Blended or Stepfamilies. In this Money Tales conversation, Paul talks about his personal journey navigating his own blended family.  Paul has two sons from his first marriage and later married again. As he shares, there have been periods where he felt like he wasn't doing enough for his current spouse, while also feeling like he was never fully caught up with his kids. Paul viewed this as a “damned if you do and damned if you don't” situation. A native of Louisiana (and a double LSU Tiger), Paul obtained his undergraduate and law degrees from Louisiana State University and an LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center before settling down to practice tax and estate planning law in the New Orleans area. Paul has taught at the University of New Orleans, Northeastern University, The University of Toledo College of Law and Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law. Paul has authored or co-authored nine books and over 500 professional articles on estate, charitable and tax planning and business valuation. Paul's ninth book, Yours, Mine & Ours: Estate Planning for People in Blended or StepFamilies, is now out. His website is www.paulhoodservices.com. A frequent contributor to Leimberg Information Services since its inception, Paul is a highly sought-after speaker and consultant because of his innate ability to see through the complexity and explain difficult and even boring subjects in understandable and entertaining language with his insightful and biting sense of humor, and he minces no words in doing so. Along the way, Paul's been a father, husband, uncle, Godfather, lawyer, trustee, member, director, president, partner, trust protector, director of planned giving, expert witness, agent, professor, judge, juror, respondent, and a defendant, and he uses his experience in these myriad roles to guide others. A passionate history buff who teaches the history of tax and estate planning in his school and continuing education classes, Paul is a self-described amateur papal historian (boasting a personal library of papal history books that exceeds 100), and he has given numerous speeches about the history of the papacy and the popes as well as the history of the governors of Louisiana. In the fall of 2022, Paul is beginning to teach a three-semester course on the history of the popes and the papacy in the Adult Lifelong Learning Program at Lourdes University, and he's also teaching another course in the fall of 2022 on the fascinating and litigious histories of Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame groups the Platters and the Drifters. Paul is an author, speaker and consultant on tax, estate and charitable planning. He also is a Vice-President with Thompson & Associates, a charitable estate planning firm. Today, I interview Paul Hood who describes his childhood household as "quiet, non-controversial, and easy". Maintaining privacy and avoiding conflict were the M.O. His father was a CPA and introduced him to a colleague who was both a CPA and a lawyer, and at age ten Paul decided that this was the combination he would strive for. He graduated with a master's in tax law and was mentored in estate planning, in which he landed a successful job at a great firm. At age 38, he was nationally nominated for an ACTEC fellowship-- something unheard of for someone so young-- and became a reputable speaker. Then, he stood his ground in a disagreement within a social organization for which he was treasurer. He lost the battle and was blacklisted in the community. Not long after, his wife of ten years decided she wanted a divorce. Paul loved his work, but he was experiencing burnout. He would later be diagnosed as bipolar. Then, after some deception by his clients regarding an estate matter, the tables turned and Paul's handling of the case was regarded as unethical, and he eventually received a suspension from the bar. His friends and colleagues abandoned him, he was struggling with his custody battle, and after much anxiety, he'd become addicted to Xanax. And finally, after a heartbreaking misunderstanding with his family, an altercation went terribly wrong. His world was crumbling and he attempted suicide. He realized that "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem." He was determined to climb out of the empty hole his life had become. He has completed rehabilitation and worked to be reinstated. He encourages others never to stop believing in themselves, and that when we don't have anyone in our corner, we have to be our own strength. He believes his inner voice carried him through. __________________ A native of Louisiana (and a double LSU Tiger), Paul Hood obtained his undergraduate and law degrees from Louisiana State University and an LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center before settling down to practice tax and estate planning law in the New Orleans area. Paul's ninth book, Yours, Mine & Ours: Estate Planning for People in Blended or StepFamilies, is now out. A “recovering tax lawyer” and frequent contributor to Leimberg Information Services since its inception, Paul is a highly sought-after speaker and consultant because of his innate ability to see through the complexity and explain difficult and even boring subjects in understandable and entertaining language with his insightful and biting sense of humor, and he minces no words in doing so. Dr. Jamie Wilkey talks about the PGX Consulting Confidence Academy, which focuses on the business side of running a pharmacogenomics practice.  Pharmacists don't have a lot of business training.  So, if you're interested in creating your own pharmacogenomics practice, this episode will have a lot of value for you. Read the full show notes at https://www.thepharmacistsvoice.com for the highlights of our conversation. How do pharmacists use their voices in the pharmacogenomics space?  How do they learn the science of PGX?  How do they start their businesses and get paid?  My PGX Pharmacists Series has given me the opportunity to learn from Dan, Sue, Mariam, and Jamie, and I have really enjoyed our conversations! (See episodes 133, 135, 137, and 139 of The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast)   Dr. Jamie Wilkey is a pharmacist who loves what she does and brings passion and happiness to the pharmacy profession.   Jamie grew up in a small town in Wyoming where she got her start in pharmacy working at the local City Drug. She attended the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy for her Doctor of Pharmacy. She was active in student government while at UW and also served as president and later as vice-president of her pharmacy class.    For 10 years post-graduation, Jamie worked in community pharmacy while having and raising her 4 little boys. Frustrated by the stress and schedule of that position, she created her own job for herself that better suits her talents, her passions, and her family's busy schedule. She abruptly jumped out of retail and into the world of entrepreneurship and has found her true calling in life. She is the founder & CEO of Arches Health, LLC. She serves patients in her community as a consultant pharmacist focusing on pharmacogenomics. After getting her practice up and running began to empower other pharmacists to do the same. She teaches pharmacists in her online program & active network called PGx Consulting Confidence Academy to confidently champion PGx and create their own consulting practices that bring the flexibility, freedom, and satisfaction they are seeking from their careers. She has taught over 160+ pharmacists how to change their careers. Dr. Wilkey is a member of CPIC as well as the nonprofit organization GTMR, and ASCP. She has been featured on over 15 podcasts in the past year, in Pharmacy Times, on Kajabi, and was recently voted as one of the Top 50 Most Influential Leaders in Pharmacy.   Jamie is optimistic about the future of pharmacy and knows great things are in store for those pharmacists who are willing to push boundaries, to think big, and to use the full extent of their education.  Thank you for listening to episode 139 of The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast!   Mentioned in this episode PGX Consulting Confidence Academy Arches Health, LLC Dr. Jamie Wilkey (LinkedIn) University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy Dan Krinsky, BS, MS, RPh, FAPhA Sue Paul, RPh Mariam S. Once she connected with other pharmacists at the beginning of the pandemic, she saw what was possible for a pharmacist to do. She couldn't go back to community practice.  She knew she was capable of so much more.    Having conversations and sharing ideas over time gets results.   With more than 15K connections on LinkedIn (as of February 2022), Jamie is well-connected.  As time goes on, people seek connection with Jamie, and she invites others to connect.  Jamie posts consistently on LinkedIn.  It has drawn a following and has been rewarding.  She has found her tribe and people with similar ideas.     Learning the science and business of PGX Jamie learned the science of PGX through certificate programs.  Learning the business of PGX included trial and error, talking to others who were 1-5 steps ahead of her, and using free resources through the U.S. Small Business Administration (Women Business Center of Utah).    Time management is important. Once Jamie started working as a PGX pharmacist in a clinic, she shared about it on LinkedIn.  A number of pharmacists reached out to her privately, asking her to coach them and help them.   In the early days of her PGX practice, Jamie's time was limited due to her private practice caseload and family commitments.  She knew she couldn't work individually with pharmacists.  As an alternative, she created an online course and “dumped her brain into it.”  She has earned more than $200K with her online course.  She recently passed her clinical PGX pharmacy practice on to one of her students, which allows her to spend more time with family and updating her online course.   Serial entrepreneur Since founding the PGX Consulting Confidence Academy, Jamie has also co-founded Own Your PharmD with Dr. Karen Brown.   A typical work week Jamie works three days/week:  Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 5 AM - 7 PM.  Mornings are for projects.  Afternoons are for meetings.  Thursdays, Fridays, and weekends are for her interests and her family.   Setting the vision Entrepreneurs set the vision for what they want their lives to be like.  Setting boundaries makes it happen.     Features of the PGX Consulting Confidence Academy It's a self-paced online course with live weekly online meetings.  Students learn the business of PGX (not the science). The goal is to help her students build a profitable business and change patients' lives.  Students can consume the content as fast or slow as they want.  The weekly online meetings are for Q&A and discussion about successes, stumbling blocks, and more.  There is also an interactive, private social media group.  According to Jamie, the online community is an uplifting place to be.   Prospective student info There are ~160 lessons (as of February 2022) and ~50 hours of content.  New content is added regularly.  A simple, two page blueprint gives students an overview of the course and helps them navigate it. The Academy has ~ 170 students (as of February 2022).   According to Jamie, the investment is approximately $4,000-5000/year.   Click here to learn more about the PGX Consulting Confidence Academy.  On the website, there is a free webinar, testimonials, and a link to schedule a call so that you can determine if the PGX Consulting Confidence Academy is right for you.     There's a new podcaster on the block! Jamie is the newest cohost of the PGX for Pharmacists Podcast on the Pharmacy Podcast Network. Todd Eury (Pharmacy Podcast Network Founder) invited Jamie to be a cohost.  According to Jamie, PGX for Pharmacists Podcast on the Pharmacy Podcast Network is the 9th most downloaded genetics podcast in the world.    Jamie isn't good at being grumpy.   Jamie has a positive attitude.  She believes that it's more fun to be happy than to be sad.  There's a smile in her voice.     Moms are amazing!   “If you want to get something done, ask a busy mom to do it, and they will get it done…and, they will do it efficiently!”  Jamie has four boys under the age of 10.  She's busy and only has time to work on what is important and will move her forward.  She doesn't have time to procrastinate or be a perfectionist.  She runs her life lean and doesn't make excuses.    Finding balance  At first, Jamie didn't have systems and processes in place.  To grow and get to where she is, she put in the time to figure out what worked for her.  It led to more flexibility.    What advice would you give yourself 9-10 years ago as you were working full-time as a staff pharmacist in a large chain retail setting? Start putting your voice out there.   Start sharing your thoughts and value with the world. Ex:  Create a blog. It's easy to pour your whole self into job or family.  Put time aside for yourself, who you are, and what you love.     Speaking engagements If you're interested in inviting Dr. Jamie Wilkey to speak at a conference or event, contact her via LinkedIn.  Jamie cares about expanding the pharmacy profession's reach and empowering women.     Thank you for listening to episode 139 of The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast!

We discussed the chronological progression of Dan's career.  Why did Dan pick pharmacy school?  His Dad's best friend was a community pharmacist.  Dan wanted to go into healthcare and own his own business, so he decided to go to pharmacy school.  Dan went to grad school at UT.  He got a MS Degree in Hospital Pharmacy.  The focus was on teaching and research.  After graduating from UT with his MS Degree, Dan left Toledo for a job developing clinical services in NC.  It didn't work out.  He moved on to another job, which he discovered by searching the “Help Wanted” ads in AJHP (American Journal of Hospital Pharmacy).  A position for a clinical coordinator for the pharmacokinetics service at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham was advertised.  Although Dan felt unqualified, he ended up joining the Drug Resource Team at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham as the coordinator for the pharmacokinetics service.  He expanded the volume of consults the role formerly served.  Dan also taught Auburn Pharmacy Students.  It was a good experience, but he was on-call all the time.  The stress and time commitment weren't right for him and his family, so he and his family moved back to Ohio.   Dan then worked for Kaiser Permanente and made his first connection to Lexicomp while there.  Lexicomp has been part of Dan's life ever since.  In the mid 1990's, Dan became the 1st pharmacist in the US to hold a shared position with a college of pharmacy and a community pharmacy:  Ohio Northern University College (ONU) of Pharmacy and Ritzman Pharmacy.  Dan provided MTM services at Ritzman's before MTM had a name!  Since his time at ONU, Dan has helped NACDS replicate the shared position he had at ONU.  Today, there are hundreds of shared positions in the US. Dan co-authored 2 books on natural products for Lexicomp.  They are Natural Therapeutics Pocket Guide Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook Dan left Ritzman's Pharmacy and went to work at Lexicomp. Lexicomp felt like a family.  It had a great company culture with company outings to Cedar Point and more.   Dan developed a RX Wiki resource.   Dan held a shared faculty position with NEOMED and Giant Eagle.  When Dan left that position, he could have retired, but he didn't!  Instead, he co-founded PGX101 and founded EduCare4U. How did Dan get into PGX?  He took the Test2Learn™️ Train the Trainer PGX Course so he could develop a PGX elective course at NEOMED and incorporate PGX into therapeutics models.  The Test2Learn™️ program was developed in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh and NACDS (National Association of Chain Drug Stores).  According to Dan, The University of Pittsburgh is a national leader in PGX research and practice.  What came out of it was meeting Sue Paul, RPh and later spreading the word about PGX to the pharmacy profession to improve the care pharmacists provide to patients.  Sue Paul, RPh and Dan Krinsky train pharmacists on PGX.  They update the PGX101 program every time they deliver it. The profession of pharmacy has given so much to Dan that he wants to give something back.  Education is one way to give back and pay it forward.   Being good listeners (a sounding board for patients) allows us to find out how we can help our patients.  Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare providers and the most knowledgeable on drug therapies and deprescribing. Dan shared a story about visiting a patient at home.  Dan said, “Home visits are eye-opening.  You learn about your patients.”  We talked about tools to help patients help themselves, such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy.  Pharmacogenomics in Dan's own words:  Applying a patient's genetic make-up to current and future drug therapies.  PGX is a tool that can lead to better outcomes. How do PGX101 students find out about the program?  LinkedIn, networking, podcasts, conferences (Medipreneurs), and organizations (APhA and OPA).   Is PGX 101 in-person or online?  It is only online using Zoom (as of January 2022).  There are two components:  15 modules for 12 hours of CE.  8 hours of live programming:  4 hours on Saturday, 4 hours on Sunday.  To learn more, visit PGX101 online. How much does PGX101 cost?  $495 for all 20 hours.  Consider it an investment in education. PGX201 is a growing community “Beyond the Certificate.”  Membership is 3 months or 12 months.  Benefits include monthly webinars and newsletters, one-on-one consultations with Sue Paul and Dan Krinsky, guest speakers, and more.  Carol Bell, PharmD (KY Pharmacist) is working on a PGX Pharmacists Registry.  According to Dan, a Kentucky teacher's retirement program provides PGX testing as a benefit for their plan.  The ROI has been demonstrated in the form of direct economic benefits.  This can serve as a model for other organizations to follow.  I suggested that this is a “bright spot” ala the book Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard by Chip and Dan Heath. EduCare4U is the umbrella company for all the services Dan offers.  Examples: Individual consultations with patients, some of whom have PGX testing. Writing.  For example, a monthly column for Pharmacy Today on self-care and OTC's.   Consulting.  For example:  monograph reviews for Lexicomp. Surgery center inspections Expert witness for attorneys Part-time work in two pharmacies in his area Guest lecturer at the Palm Beach Atlantic University Gregory School of Pharmacy   We spoke about Dan's expert witness role.  The first time he served this role was early in his career while working in Alabama.  The first attorney Dan helped recommended Dan do more expert witness work.  Dan told a story about an intense deposition that took hours.  Dan serves as a pharmacist on medical mission trips to Honduras each year with his local Catholic Church.  He has been doing it for 17 years, and he loves it.  Dan got started with his mission work by covering for a pharmacist who got sick and had to drop out of the trip.   Who was on the Mission Trip?  High school students who serve as Spanish-language interpreters, doctors, dentists, nurses, optometrists, pharmacists, and others who want to serve.  They see 3,000-4,000 patients in one week and dispense 15,000-20,000 prescriptions. Dan gave advice for Pharmacist Dads:  Have a career, but be present for family.  Always prioritize your family first.  Dan wanted to be present for milestones, coaching his kids, attending events, going on vacations, and taking his wife out for their anniversary.  “You never get those moments back.” Dan said, “Career is important, but pharmacy will always be there.” Thank you for listening to episode 133 of The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast!

I'm celebrating 2 full years in podcasting today (January 21, 2022). If you're new to the show, WELCOME!  This is a great episode to start with!  In this episode, I share a little bit about me,  some history about this podcast (when and why I started it, who it's for, and what I want listeners to do with the information), some of the struggles I've worked through in the first two years of the podcast, and what's coming up as I begin my third year in podcasting. Read the full show notes at The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast https://www.thepharmacistsvoice.com/podcast Mentioned in this episode Dr. Erin L. Episode 130 of The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast “1+1=4.  What pharmacists can learn from Belgian Draft Horses” Muscle tension dysphonia and treatment with voice therapy NaPodPoMo = National Podcast Post Month (an annual challenge in November)   Highlights from the episode I am a pharmacist, voice actor, podcast host, wife, mom of 2 teenaged boys, and a volunteer.  Why did I start a podcast?  I started The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast for three reasons: Dr. Erin L. Albert suggested I look into starting a podcast; the podcast works as a branding tool; and the podcast helps me network. Who is my intended audience?  Pharmacists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and voice actors in the medical space.  What do I want you to do with the information in this podcast?  The number one thing I want you to do is BE INSPIRED TO USE YOUR VOICE!  That means, I want you to feel inspired to use your expertise/your passion for something that you feel is worthwhile.  Please note that I am not the voice of the pharmacy profession.  This podcast is not about me trying to position myself as the voice of the pharmacy profession.  I want to inspire people to use their voices. The 4 main things I struggle with are carrying the conversation all by myself on solo shows (because I'm a reactor, not a generator), finding time to podcast, audio engineering, and voice issues, like muscle tension dysphonia and losing my voice after a cold.   Coming up in 2022, I will continue to publish one episode/week.  There will be solo shows and interview shows.  I plan to do more series, and I hope to participate in NaPodPoMo.   Thank you for listening to episode 132 of The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast!  Please subscribe to/follow The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast for all future episodes. To many supporters of vouchers and charter schools, these policy innovations are crucial elements in the effort to vindicate the civil and political ights of low-income parents and members of racial minorities. At the same time, many school choice critics suggest that vouchers will constitute a set-back for public-school integration. Speakers at this panel— civil-rights leaders, school-choice activists, and academics— will discuss these problems, and also explore the connection between school choice and parents' First Amendment freedoms, as well as the historical and consitutional tradition of viewing a well-educated citizenry as the key to democratic and republican government and education as the key to meaningful exercise of civil rights. The second panel covered "School Choice in the Courts."The United States Supreme Court recently declined to review the Wisconsin Supreme Court's holding that Milwaukee's school-voucher program does not violate the First Amendment's Religion Clause, and the Arizona Supreme Court upheld tax credits. Other recent federal-court decisions have embraced many of the constitutional arguments advanced by school choice proponents. In this episode, we have Dr. Sheila Enoh and Dr. Idris Yakubu back with us to continue the conversation on their road to success as international students with the focus on how they got into professional school in the US. Being African and an international student trying to get into Pharmacy or Med school definitely presents the case of a double minority as a foreigner and not eligible for financial aid. Most Pharmacy and Med school programs will not even look at your application if you are an international student and that obviously decreases your odds. Nonetheless, if you can dream it, you can STILL achieve it. And that is what we are here to speak about today.   Dr. Enoh and Dr. Yakubu will hopefully inspire and encourage you with their story of blood, sweat and tears, but what is most important is that they didn't give up. You, too, can make it if you don't give up. As a wise woman once said, your dreams are valid. We hope this episode encourages anyone who has hopes of achieving their dreams even when all odds seem to be against them.   MEET OUR GUESTS: Dr. Sheila Enoh, MD MPH was born and raised in Yaounde, Cameroon. She moved to the US at the age of 18 to attend college as an international student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for her undergraduate studies. Regardless of how strong you may be in other areas, if your grades aren't good enough, you are not making yourself competitive enough. In this episode we discuss testicular and scrotal pain.  Most guys have had pain in their testicles and scrotum at some point.  This pain is usually short lived and goes away on its own.  But for some men, the pain does not go away. It persists and begins to affect their day to day lives, limiting their activities, destroying their sex lives, and impacting their mental health.  What causes this chronic pain in the scrotum?  How should it be evaluated?  And what treatment options are available?  In order to answer these questions, we spoke with Dr Petar Bajic.  Dr Bajic is a urologist in the Center for Men's Health at the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, and Assistant Professor of Urology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. He specializes in men's health and sexual medicine. Dr. Bajic earned his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine. He then completed his residency training in urology at Loyola University Medical and a fellowship in Andrology and Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Bajic is an avid researcher and physician-scientist. Dr. Bajic is Associate Editor for the medical journal Urology and is a regular reviewer for multiple other medical journals.

Almasa and I met in the pre-pharmacy program at The University of Toledo (Toledo, OH), where we earned our BS Pharmacy Degrees.  She earned her PharmD from The Ohio State University and completed a Clinical Research and Drug Development Fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill.  Over the years, she has worked for numerous drug companies, including King, Pfizer, Shionogi, and UCB.  Almasa enjoys the development side of R&D. Although Almasa is not employed in traditional clinical pharmacy practice, she keeps an active pharmacist license. Mentioned in this episode  Almasa's LinkedIn Profile Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation bhfuturesfoundation.org The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy (Toledo, OH) The Ohio State University (Columbus, OH) UNC Chapel Hill Clinical Research and Drug Development Fellowship (Chapel Hill, NC) King Pharmaceuticals (now part of Pfizer) Pfizer Shionogi UCB The Chicken Whisperer Podcast - What to do with all that chicken poop episode (Apple Podcasts Link) Almasa became successful in the pharmaceutical industry thanks to her pharmacy degrees, fellowship, on-the-job training, managers, mentors, and teams.  A Pharmacy Degree is a good foundation for a role in the pharmaceutical industry.  There are so many roles!  R&D, Clinical Development, Safety, Regulatory, Medical Affairs, and more.  Almasa has worked on pharmaceuticals in many drug classes.   There's more than one way to get a job in the pharmaceutical industry.  Apply first.  Once you're in, you can apply internally for a position or get recruited to fill a role.  Networking helps facilitate moving around.  There's more than one approach. Almasa is an advocate for the Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation.  As a refugee from the former Yugoslavia in the 1990's, she was displaced to Croatia, then immigrated to the US with her Mom, Dad, and younger sister.  As an adult, Almasa wanted to give back and help youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  Bosnia is more than just four large cities: Sarajevo, Mostar, Tuzla, and Banja Luka.  It's also made up of little cities, like her home town of Donji Vakuf.  Almasa mentored a young woman from the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH) Futures Foundation.  Then, she advocated for a Makerspace in Donji Vakuf.   Sometimes, kids need a little push and good role models.  BH Futures Foundation empowers youth through education, technology, and leadership development.  The Donji Vakuf Makerspace is a place for young people to learn, develop, and try to solve problems.  BH Futures Foundation gives them the tools they need.  Building relationships with community leaders and getting their buy-in was an important part of founding the Makerspace in Donji Vakuf.  When it opened in August 2021, it was well-received by the community.   Almasa cares about kids in small towns having opportunities - not just kids in the big cities.  She wanted to give others a chance to make it as far as they can. What does Almasa do for fun?  Almasa has backyard chickens!  During the pandemic (summer 2020), she hired a carpenter to build a beautiful chicken coop in her backyard.  It looks like a red barn.  She has 4 lady birds (all 4 are different breeds).  They lay 3-4 eggs/day.  When she lets the roam, they like to walk around her yard.  She has learned a lot from the Chicken Whisperer Podcast, including how to compost chicken poop.  In the future, Almasa would like to try raised-bed gardening and use her compost to grow her favorite vegetables. Listen to the podcast for more about how Almasa avoids burnout and some of her favorite board games! Thank you for listening to The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast Episode 115!

Expectations: stories about Ticket to Ride, my unplanned pregnancy at age 23, and episode one of this podcast

Pharmacist's Voice

On today’s episode, I’ll share a few stories about expectations and tie them into my journey.  You’ll hear about my favorite board game, which is Ticket to Ride, my unplanned pregnancy at the age of 23, and my expectations for episode one of this podcast.   Mentioned in this episode Ticket to Ride https://www.daysofwonder.com/tickettoride/en/usa/ The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy  Purdue College of Pharmacy   Episode One of The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast  Episode Notes An expectation is a strong belief that something will happen in the future. There’s no plan.  You just expect it to happen.  If I set a goal, on the other hand, it’s specific.  I get to pick how I try to achieve the goal.  Goals can be flexible that way.   When I play my favorite board game, Ticket to Ride, I have some expectations.  I expect to have fun, score as many points as possible, and finish the game.  There’s no plan.  I just expect it to happen.  I believe it will happen.     If you’re unfamiliar with Ticket to Ride, it’s a board game with a train theme.  It’s also available using apps on Apple and Android products.  I love it!  There are at least ten maps.  The Swiss and US maps are my favorites.  Players claim railway routes connecting cities, and the player with the most points at the end of the game wins.  What’s the goal?  To have the highest score.  How do you get points?  Depending on the map, there are several different ways, like completing destination tickets, building the longest train, and scoring the most points with up to 45 wagons.   If you can imagine a map of the United States, a common destination ticket is Los Angeles to New York City.  To complete that ticket, I could travel across the middle of the country through Salt Lake City, Denver, Chicago, and Pittsburgh to get from LA to New York.  I could travel from West to East or from East to West.  I could even start in the middle of the country.  If I wanted to, I could travel south through Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston, and El Paso on my way to LA.  It’s my journey.  I get to pick the route.  The goal remains the same, no matter how unconventional the route.   Ticket to Ride is practically an analogy for life.  Have expectations.  Play the game.  Live your life.  If you want to accomplish something, set some goals.  Accomplish your goals whether you take the predictable, direct route or the longer, scenic route.  I’ve made it this far on my journey from pharmacist to voice actor by being flexible yet still achieving my goals.  Because of my life circumstances, I’ll admit to taking the scenic route!  I’m making progress slowly, but I expect to move the needle a little more every year.   I need to update my goals this month, but I have my expectations written.  For the next 12 months, I expect to Improve my performance skills  Improve my audio engineering skills Attempt more auditions Book more jobs Increase my income Nurture and develop relationships   Without goals to support those expectations, I’m only having fun being in the game.  I’m looking forward to writing new goals this month and making progress.   Here’s the story about my unplanned pregnancy at the age of 23.   I got married in 2001 when I was still 22 years old, just 6 weeks after graduating with my Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy.  I expected to work for a year to pay off my student loans.  Then, go to grad school.  My choices were: Master’s Degree in Pharmacy Administration from Purdue  PharmD from The University of Toledo.   I earned my Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Toledo (GO ROCKETS!), and the PharmD was the more likely choice.  In less than a year, however, I unexpectedly got pregnant at the age of 23.  I never went to grad school.  Back when I graduated, a pharmacist only needed a Bachelor’s Degree.   When my husband and I were expecting our first child, I was just trying to get through the pregnancy.  I was young, and none of my friends had kids yet.  I didn’t think too much about the birth, childcare, or how my life would change.  Like the free spirit I was back then, I thought I’d figure it out during maternity leave AFTER the baby was born.  We had a son.  He’s 17 now.   I expected an easy labor and delivery.  I expected all the time my husband and I spent in lamaze class would pay off, and I would have an uneventful delivery.  Unfortunately, our son was breech at 39 weeks, and I had a c-section.  My expectations were blown completely apart.  Not only did I have a c-section, but I also had a post-operative infection that lasted so long that I couldn’t even return to work after 12 weeks.  I was out of work for 16 weeks.    Then, another surprise happened.  I thought babies slept a lot.  Not my baby.  The doctors told me my son had “colic.”  Fast-forward 2 and a half years.  He actually had a number of problems, including sensory integration dysfunction and autism.  I didn’t expect a c-section, a post-op infection, an unhappy baby, sleepless days and nights, and eventually a child with a disability.  I know all about unmet expectations.  There are some things, you just can’t write goals for.  It’s ok to change your expectations though and make plans the best you can under the circumstances.  That’s what I did.   When I was learning how to launch my podcast last year, at least a dozen people told me that my first episode would also be my worst episode.  They were kind of right.  It happens to be my most-listened-to episode whether you or I think it’s my worst or not.  The point is that the expectation was set.  Knowing that the first one might be terrible actually helped me reconcile that I had to just get started and not let my expectations or anyone’s judgement prevent me from moving forward.  I made it my goal to improve my delivery, content, and show notes over time.  I feel at peace with everything, and I really do think it’s getting better.  Feel free to give me some feedback using the contact form on my website.  https://www.thepharmacistsvoice.com  Have expectations.  Make goals.  If you come close, give yourself credit, and try to enjoy the journey.

In this episode, Lee J. Strang, John W. Stoepler Professor of Law & Values at the University of Toledo College of Law, discusses his book "Originalism's Promise: A Natural Law Account of the American Constitution," which is published by Cambridge University Press. Strang begins by explaining what he means by "originalism," and why he thinks the different versions of originalism are ultimately consistent with each other. He argues that courts should engage in "good-faith" originalism when interpreting the Constitution, and reflects on how that is consistent with good governance and the common good. And he suggests that this kind of originalism is consistent with how people actually think about constitutional values. This episode was hosted by Brian L. Today’s episode is an interview with Ohio Pharmacist Dave Bitkowski.  Dave is an advocate for his daughter Melissa and her rare kidney disease GPA (granulomatosis with polyangiitis).  He is also a pharmacist entrepreneur who provides entertainment in the form of air gun targets.  Mentioned in this episode Dave’s company is RX Target Systems www.rxtargetsystems.com  Email: dave@rxtargetsystems.com  Facebook: Rx Target Systems by David A Bitkowski  Instagram: @rxtargetsystems   Twitter:  @SystemsRx  Youtube:  Rx Target Systems  LinkedIn:  David Bitkowski  GPA (granulomatosis with polyangiitis) is a rare kidney disease Melissa was treated at CS MOTT Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan Medical Center https://www.mottchildren.org  Pyramyd Air Cup Competitions https://www.pyramydaircup.com To purchase RX Target systems, visit rxtargetsystems.com or the following vendors: Baker Airguns https://www.bakerairguns.com  American Airgunner https://www.americanairgunner.com  High Pressure Pneumatics https://myhighpressureair.com/?olsPage=products   Utah Airguns https://utahairguns.com (late May 2020) RX Target Systems are used on quality assurance ranges at Corporations such as  UTG https://www.leapers.com  Crosman https://www.crosman.com  Umarex https://www.umarexusa.com  Dave Bitkowski’s Bio Dave Bitkowski graduated from the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy with his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1995. He is a long term care pharmacist in Northwest Ohio.  Dave Founded Rx Target Systems in 2017.  RX Target Systems is a premium target manufacturing business for airsoft guns and air guns.  I invited Dave on the podcast because he advocates, educates, and entertains.   Dave’s daughter Melissa has a rare kidney disease called granulomatosis with polyangiitis (also known as GPA), and he is her advocate.  To help with the cost of her care and to have a creative outlet, Dave used his air-gun hobby to launch a business.   He educates air gunners that a simple tool, like his targets, can enhance skill without costing a lot of money.  Rx Target System’s mission is not only to enhance air gun marksmanship skills, but also to increase pediatric kidney disease awareness.  He fits into the entertainment category too because his product entertains air gun enthusiasts at home and in competition.   Products sold by Rx Target Systems have earned favorable reviews by leaders in the air gun sporting industry.  For example the Pyramyd Air Cup speed shooting competition featured RX Target Systems in 2019.  RX Target Systems are also used on quality assurance ranges at Corporations such as UTG, Crosman, and Umarex.   Dave Bitkowski is pharmacist entrepreneur with a great story! Melissa’s Story Dave’s daughter Melissa got sick with a rare kidney disease called granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) when she was 6 years old (in 1st grade).  She is now 11 years old.   Facts about GPA According to medscape.com, the prevalence of GPA in the United States is estimated to be 3 cases per 100,000 people.  It is a rheumatological disorder, and Melissa’s form of GPA was localized to her kidneys.  It is more common in adults, ages 40-65.  At the time of her diagnosis, Melissa’s GPA was the second Toledo, OH-area case her pediatric nephrologist had seen in 15 years. Kidney donor testing is like astronaut testing:  labs, physicals, scans, and more. A living donor and a deceased donor were both considered.  Willing family members were tested:  Mom, Dad, and a cousin.  A physical exam was needed to determine physical fitness to withstand the donation surgery.  The kidneys themselves were scanned.  Blood test results for Rh factor and kidney function were performed.  Plus, the economic impact on the family was considered.  Finding the best match possible is time-consuming and complicated.  It took almost a year to complete testing, pick a donor, and schedule a surgery date.  Melissa was 9 years old when she got her new kidney. Who is Melissa’s kidney donor? Melissa hoped for a woman’s kidney, and a female cousin became Melissa’s kidney donor.   The transplant team walked past with a cooler… Dave recounted seeing the transplant team walk from the adult donor’s recovery area to his daughter’s pediatric surgery unit WITH A COOLER.  Time stopped, and he witnessed a miracle being delivered.  (It was Melissa’s new kidney!) Why did the transplant happen on 7/11? Melissa was able to pick the date because she had a living donor.  Melissa recognized that 7/11 is a lucky number combo and picked that date.  How does Melissa’s life post-transplant affect your family?   Melissa needs to take a number of medications every 12 hours to prevent her body from rejecting  the donor kidney, among other concerns.  She needs her temperature checked routinely.  Fluid goals need to be met daily to avoid dehydration.   How does an organ transplant affect Melissa’s school day? School has been accommodating with extra bathroom breaks and cautioning the family about health threats.  Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the school nurse would communicate flu outbreaks and other concerns so Melissa can wash hands more, wear a mask, etc. How does Melissa’s organ transplant affect extracurricular opportunities?   Sleepovers are more complicated.  If Melissa needs her medications while outside the home, reminders are needed, but she can still participate.  Non-contact sports are the only ones allowed.   How has your background as a pharmacist helped your family navigate your daughter’s kidney disease?   It’s a double-edged sword.  Dave is a pharmacist and a medication expert.  He also understands insurance hurdles and how to navigate them. He was able to talk to his daughter’s nephrologist and healthcare team on a high level.  He can also fill her medication boxes.   Dave and his wife make a great team! Dave and his wife care for their daughter Melissa together.  Dave takes the lead on medical issues.  His wife takes the lead on Melissa’s social life, school responsibilities, etc.  They make a great team! What is one of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome with your daughter’s GPA? Finding a “new normal” with restrictions.  Leaving the house had to wait until some time after the kidney transplant.  Going on vacation or to a crowded restaurant or movie theater right after the transplant was impossible.  Plus, focusing on “just being a Dad” and putting Melissa first during the crisis was a challenge.  It’s hard to get bad news and move forward. Support is important Dave and his family had faith that things would be ok. His employer was very understanding of his family’s situation and allowed one month off. The social worker staff at U of M encouraged healing for Melissa and the entire family. Dave’s wife quit her job to stay home and care for their daughter.  RX Target Systems builds and sells air gun targets   For more information, visit https://www.rxtargetsystems.com. Dave founded the company in March 2017 with the encouragement of his peers in the air gun community.   Business Goals Improve client marksmanship and skill level with his shooting products Raise awareness about GPA (granulomatosis with polyangiitis) on the business website Support a fund in his daughter’s name at the University of Michigan.  (The fund helps social workers who serve families who have a child on dialysis.)  A portion of the income from RX Target Systems goes to The Fund.  Dave wants to help others. Earn money to fund his daughter’s ongoing healthcare needs. Dave’s air gun hobby started in 2006 Dave started shooting air guns as a hobby in 2006.  He started with a basic pellet gun and graduated to more powerful air guns, which are used in sporting competitions and hunting. RX Target Systems are featured and sold at speed-shooting competitions.   There are 3 types of air gun events:  field target, benchrest, and speed shooting.  Dave made speed-shooting targets for an event called the Pyramyd Air Gun Competition in August 2019.  To learn more, visit  https://www.pyramydaircup.com.  RX Target Systems were the first resettable speed targets used at that level of competition in the US.  Because target reset time was fast, the length of the competition was cut in half!   RX Target Systems are also great for backyard and range use With more people staying at home due to COVID-19, they’re bored and looking for something to do.  Some people are trying air guns and target-shooting with Dave’s products.   RX Target Systems are the next generation of air gun targets Air guns have become so powerful that there weren’t air gun targets strong enough for them and firearms targets were needed.  Dave saw that as a problem and created the next generation of air gun targets that can handle high-powered air guns.   What do you love most about RX Target Systems? Educating air gunners that a simple tool (a target!) can enhance skill and doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Recognition from peers in the air gun industry.   Camaraderie in the air gun community to advance the sport.   Educating others about GPA and raising money for a fund that helps others. What’s something people don’t realize about being a pharmacist entrepreneur?  Business skills weren’t covered in pharmacy school, but you can learn what you need to know.  The skills you need to learn something new are the same skills you used to complete your pharmacy education.  Being a pharmacist helps with RX Target Systems because of the teaching element.  Counseling patients and educating air gun enthusiasts is similar.  Closing remarks When you struggle, how you react defines you.  Face your hard times; move forward; and prevail.   The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast has listeners in 36 US States and 21 countries.

The first panel discussed "The Original Understanding of 'Privileges of Immunities'".Scholars contest the original meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment. In 1873, the Supreme Court rejected a challenge to state economic regulations under the Privileges or Immunities Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment in the Slaughter-House Cases. Since then, the Privileges or Immunities Clause has been best known as a “practical nullity.” However, Justice Thomas provided a strong challenge to this interpretation in his McDonald v. City of Chicago concurrence. This panel explores whether the Fourteenth Amendment was principally concerned with equality, guaranteeing fundamental rights, or both. If the Fourteenth Amendment does guarantee fundamental rights, does it merely incorporate the bill of rights against the states, or does it do more and provide protections for economic liberty? And was the Amendment intended to accomplish these purposes through a substantive notion of “due process” or through the Privileges or Immunities Clause? Is the fundamental-rights view inconsistent with judicial restraint? This panel will discuss these fundamental questions concerning the Fourteenth Amendment’s original meaning, and whether maintaining an expansive notion of substantive due process or resurrecting the Privileges or Immunities Clause would be an ill-conceived invitation to judicial activism.Prof. Randy E. This episode is presented by The United States Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corp. Each of the five U.S. military branches has a large legal staff that handles civil litigation, criminal prosecution and defense, servicemen and servicewomen education about rights and responsibilities, and more. With worldwide jurisdiction, the military justice system operates alongside our civilian system and is run by the Judge Advocate General's Corp. -- JAG for short. In this episode, we hear from an Air Force JAG officer. Captain Megan Mallone is a 2008 graduate of the University of Toledo College of Law and joined the military right after law school. She's not involved in combat, but she does provide legal counsel of all kinds to warfighters. Every Air Force JAG starts as a prosecutor, enforcing military justice for the U.S. government. But after that? Your future is at the mercy of your military commanders. Megan's original commitment was 4 years, but like many JAG officers, she re-enlisted and continued her varied experience in new places. She deployed to Greece and Qatar while stationed in England, where she supported her military installations to meet their missions. This episode is hosted by Debby Merritt, a law professor at Ohio State University. It is sponsored by Barbri Law Preview and Top-Law-Schools.com. Limited Government and the Bill of Rights takes a novel approach to the constitutional connection between the Bill of Rights and principles of limited government. Author Patrick Garry proposes that the Bill of Rights should be viewed primarily as limiting the power of government rather than protecting of the autonomy interests of individuals. He argues that this limited government approach is ultimately the best way to maximize individual liberty, and limits judicial overreach by denying Courts the power to create and enforce expansive, autonomy-based rights. -- Professor Garry, Professor of Law and Director of the Hagemann Center for Legal & Public Policy Research at the University of South Dakota School of Law, is joined by critical commenter Lee Strang, Professor at the University of Toledo College of Law, to discuss the book.
