Heidi is a University of Virginia School of Law graduate and currently works as the Associate Dean for Upper Level Writing at New York Law School. Heidi's journey is one of being thrown into the fire and building resilience through it. Heidi is a Lawyer turned professor and author, speaking on topics that hit home for many law students and lawyers: Introversion, Fear, and how to flourish from it! Heidi and I start right before Law School, where we discuss what went into her decision to enter the University of Virginia School of Law. We then moved into the first year of Law School, which she hated because of cold calls, and her disposition to being introverted. This experience would plant the early seeds for what she would write about later in her career. Heidi would discuss the rest of her Law School experience and beyond. Initially starting in Washington, after some life complications, Heidi would head up north to New York City to begin a new chapter of her life. She would discuss the many experiences she had and the riveting stories that have led her to today. We also spoke about a massive turning point in Hedi's life. After being initially rejected to teach at Chapman University School of Law, she received a call a week before classes saying that they needed her. With no teaching experience, Heidi began her career as a professor, and the rest is history. Finally, we spoke about Heidi's three books (Below!): The Introverted Lawyer, Untangling Fear in Lawyering, and The Flourishing Lawyer. Heidi talked about her inspirations for writing each book and her various jobs throughout different law schools in New York. She expanded on topics such as understanding yourself, processing those freeze-ups, and her system for overcoming introversion and fear. This episode with Heidi illuminates an unbelievably successful career and a story of resiliency in the face of fear and introversion! Be sure to check out all of Heidi's content and books below! Rasul is a 2L at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. Rasul's journey is one of the best this podcast has ever had to offer. From tire technician to College Valedictorian and Rhodes Scholar finalist, and now a rising 2L and an upcoming 3L Class President at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.Rasul and I started before he arrived at college. Being an average High School Student, Rasul did not have many intentions of attending college. Inspired by a coworker at BJ's, he would begin his search. After finding out a scholarship could get him to Prince George's Community College for free, he would start his unforgettable journey. Following his time at Prince George's, Rasul finished his time at Towson University, being top 1% of his class, President of numerous organizations, a Rhodes Scholar finalist, and finally, Valedictorian Speaker. We then moved to his introduction into Law School, his 1L year, which he thoroughly enjoyed. It was a thought-provoking experience and a testament to the hard work he had accomplished in the 4 years before it. Even with the large workload, Rasul would become 1L Class President and follow his intellectual curiosity, speaking on the many internships he has held thus far. This episode with Rasul is one of my favorites of all time, full of amazing stories and a testament to pulling yourself up by the bootstraps and not limiting yourself, no matter what. Tamany is a University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School Graduate and works as the Founding Partner of California IP Law. Tamany's journey is far from typical, graduating college with a degree in Biology, but after an experience in Washington DC, Tamany would switch course to the Law route, leading to a career full of success! Tamany and I start prior to her introduction to Pennsylvania Carey Law School, where she would delve into her story, going from the doctor route to the Law route. When she finally arrived at Pennsylvania Carey Law School, her first year of law school was as good as it gets, only focusing on school for the first time in her life and getting to experience a completely different experience from what she was used to. Throughout her time at Law School, Tamany would talk about the various experiences she had, landing on Patent and Intellectual Property Law, and her love and immense ability with Civil Procedure, to guide her future career decisions. Following that, Tamany would talk about her journey to the various major positions she has held, as well as speaking on other lawyers she had met throughout her time who didn't come from the top law schools but hustled and had an extreme level of care for what they were doing. Her advice was to be like them and take every day in law as another day to make an impact in the world. Finally, we would discuss what Tamany does today as the founding partner of her firm, California IP Law. Tamany discussed her experience opening her firm and the successes and struggles that came with it. In the end, Tamany's high-level experience in the Law offers insights of extreme value for all my friends out there. You don't want to miss this one! Zak is a 2L at Widener Delaware Law, and currently works as the Founder of Balancing the Scales. Zak's journey is a testament to not only taking opportunities, but making your own! Zak and I start prior to his arrival to Delaware Law, where Zak would participate in fascinating Pre-Law programs, being Eversheds Sutherland Scholar, as well as an Afro Scholar at Kirkland Ellis. These experiences would lay the foundations for his interest in Law School, as well as what he would want to do in the future, as they touched on all areas of the Law, with a wealth of experience. We then moved to Zak's first year of Law School, where it was extremely difficult but by leveraging the mentors and connections from the Pre-Law programs it allowed him to get a better understanding of the material. Zak would key in on how vital setting and sticking to your expectations and goals is in terms of grades. Zak would be in the top of his class, and they directly aligned to the action steps he was taking. During spring semester of his 1L year, after finding a lack of resources for pre-law and law students alike, Zak would take the initiative and found Balancing the Scales, a passion project and brainchild of Zak as he sought to "level the playing field" by increasing access to information and resources for diverse and first-generation law students. Through webinars, mentorship, networking events, and scholarship opportunities, the Balance The Scales platform is intended to do exactly what its name suggests. Finally, we went through Zak's internships and their impact on his future plans, finding areas that are interesting and intellectually challenging. Zak suggests to those going to Law School and those in it to send emails to professionals and build out a network of veteran lawyers to help and support them through their journey. This episode with Zak further shows how important it is to take the initiative and create opportunities for yourself that will pay dividends for the rest of your life! Brennan is a current 3L at the University of Georgia Law School. Brennan's journey is just getting underway but is full of amazing insights about the Law School experience, while still fresh in the mind. Brennan and I started before Law School, during his time at UPenn. He would explore many different routes before deciding on Law, but his inspiration for Law School came before arriving at UPenn. His late father was a prosecutor and family law attorney, so Brennan was surrounded by the law at a young age. He always questioned the law and was interested in the wall between those in the legal world and everyday people. We then moved to Brennan's first year of Law School, which he thoroughly enjoyed, and understood as well, that he was not going to enjoy and love every second of it. Brennan loved the structure it brought to his life, and accepted and was ok with doing it for hours on end every week, always having goals in mind. Brennan then spoke about his work experiences throughout Law School, focusing on a topic we talk about with every Law Student and Lawyer who comes on the podcast, finding out what they want to do with the law, which is important, but especially finding out what he did not want to do with the law, in terms of specialization. Finally, Brennan and I would look towards the future, where, after being a summer associate at Kirkland & Ellis this past summer, Brennan will be returning there post-graduation, so a huge congratulations to him! This episode with Brennan is wide-ranging in topics but also full of wisdom and advice about achieving success at any Law School!Brennan's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brennanroseRhetoric's Moot Court Madness Competition registration is now live, with a grand prize of $5,000! Enam is a University of Buffalo School of Law graduate and currently works as a Legal and Technology Consultant at LawBeta. Enam's story and journey are the epitome of being guided by a unique journey. From Big Law and Wall Street employee for 15 years, to pursuing his passion, in legal technology, a riveting story and one of our longest episodes to date! Enam and I start before his entry into Buffalo School of Law. Inspired by Atticus Finch to go to Law School after reading To Kill a Mocking Bird in 3rd grade, in pursuit of standing up for people and gaining justice. We then moved to Enam's first year of Law School, which he loved and was a time to restart again. It was a lot of work, but it was full of meeting new people and an unbelievably valuable change of scenery. We then moved to Enam's post-graduation experiences, keying in on what he wanted to do with the Law and especially what he did not want to do with the Law in terms of specialization. After this, we spoke about his time in Big Law and working on Wall Street. When first starting, Enam described it as a steep learning curve, but it felt right because it was new and interesting. After the new feeling wore off, Enam would move firms and finally end up at Moody's. He would delve into each experience and what caused each change. After 7 years at Moody, and with the advent of Covid, Enam decided that he needed something new and would move to California. But, Enam would enter into a period of darkness, with his career in the unknown and not wanting to return to Law. Then, out of nowhere, when deciding to go to a conference, he would meet a random person who he still speaks to today, who, after looking over his LinkedIn, told him he was an extremely impressive professional. This story would be, for me, one of the rawest and most emotional segments in this podcast's history, as this one moment, would be a piece of immense inspiration, and lead him to follow his passion. We then came to today, where Enam is a Legal and Technology consultant at LawBeta, consultants at the vibrant intersection of Law and Technology. Enam would speak about his experience thus far, and just how amazing it has been. Finally, Enam gave his technology recommendations, from what kind of LLMs he uses, and the devices he has, and even a shoutout to one of the sponsors of this podcast, Rhetoric. As well, as some spectacular book and podcast recommendations. Enam's journey, not only is one of our longest episodes and one that is full of a wide range of emotions, and amazing career advice from a veteran of the industry. Patrick is an Albany Law School graduate and works as the Director of the Government Law Center at Albany Law School. From College Soccer Player to Law School graduate to working at the Executive Chamber to the Governor of New York, Patrick's journey is unique in its own ways. Patrick and I start right before his introduction to Albany Law School. Inspired by his parents, Law School was always something that was top of mind. At home, his community cultivated a culture of volunteering, as well as the pro-bono work he saw his parents do, had a massive influence over him, and the future work that he would do. We then spoke about the first year of Law School, which was nothing short of a massive learning experience. Patrick would describe it as dense as well as a total reset from the way you think, and with that also made it critical for future success. Patrick then spoke about various experiences he had leading up to today. He discussed how he figured out what he wanted to do with the law, inspired by a need to help those who needed it, a constant theme throughout his career. Patrick also keyed in on the importance of Mental Health, especially in the legal industry. Finally, we would speak about what Patrick does today as the Director of the Government Law Center at Albany Law School: helping students find opportunities at the government and on their own unique journeys. Joy is a 2L at The University of Texas School of Law. Joy's journey is still underway, she offers insights about Law School, and the process of it, while they are fresh in the mind. Joy and I started prior to Law School, during her time at Baylor University. She would speak on her experience of being a foreign service officer at the U.S. Department of State, where she gained a ton of people skills and vastly improved her public speaking ability, talking in front of crowds, large and small. This experience she felt was essential for her professional life going forward, laying the foundations for skills she still uses today. We then spoke about her pre-law legal internship at Faith and Life Wellness, which was a mix of her passion and a view into what the law is like. Through this experience, she learned some foundational legal skills and that this particular sector would not be one she would return to, further showing the importance of trying out a diverse number of legal internships and clerkships. Finally, we spoke about her Law School experience thus far. Speaking on the first year, Joy would love her time, excited to be around people who have a wealth of knowledge and ambition, while also having a surreal experience just being there. She would concede that it was an information overload, but that did not stop her from having amazing success. We would then speak about how important mentorship has been for her through her two years at The University of Texas School of Law, noting that you can't get anywhere on your own, and that even if it seems scary at first, seeking people pays amazing dividends over time. Joy's experience so far, represents that taking a chance on Law School and exploring its possibilities can truly be a life-changing experience! Joseph is a 2L at Ohio Northern University College of Law and works as a Legal Assistant at Swartz, Culleton, and Ferris. Joseph's journey to Law School is full of twists, turns, and amazing insights! Joseph and I start at his graduation from Wyoming Catholic College where he graduated with a degree in Liberal Arts. We would discuss his experience at Lowes, which offered extremely valuable people skills and laid the foundations for skills he still uses to this day, further offering the importance of those odd jobs. We then spoke about his 2 years at NJM Insurance Group where Joseph would be taking up to 100 phone calls a day. As well it was also a job through LinkedIn, showing how important it is to put yourself out there. Joesph also gained new perspectives and got a peek into the insurance world. We then moved to Joseph's entry into Ohio Northern University College of Law. We spoke about what went into his decision to enter law school and the important mentors he had along the way. Joseph would speak about his first year of law school, which he both loved and hated. He loved the school part but felt it was socially difficult due to its competitive nature. He gives the advice to treat it like a job. Finally, Joseph and I spoke about the internships he has held along the way, finding the specialization he wants to do through them. Joseph would also harp on the idea of avoiding the social problems and drama that come with law school, and always take the opportunity to talk to those not a part of the Law School, to take your mind off things. This episode with Joseph is an episode full of intelligent insights, and finding the systems, tools, and strategies that work for you, all through the power of action! Jennifer is a 3L at Albany Law School. It works as a Law Clerk at Lippes Mathias and as the Executive Director of the Albany Law School Anthony V. Cardona '70 Moot Court Program. Jenn's journey is full of self-discovery, and amazing insights about the Law School experience, while they are fresh in the mind. Jennifer and I started at Cazenovia College, where she graduated with degrees in Psychology and Criminal Justice. With no family in the legal industry, Jennifer had to DIY her way through the admissions process, using Google and any online resources she could get her hands on. This would lead her to Albany Law the following fall. Jennifer would then speak about her First-year experience, as a great struggle, and an ego check. She would gain tremendous amounts of resiliency through this, as well as gain new study habits. Through this first-year experience, she advised others to give themselves more time to study, focus intently on the work in front of them, write out their notes, and find those all-important study groups to leverage the knowledge of others. We then spoke about the various legal internships she has had, describing them as eye-opening experiences, as well as the utilization of LinkedIn to find said opportunities. Through these experiences, she would learn the differences between the practice of law and the study of law, and the overlapping utility of them both. Finally we spoke about Jennifer's position as the Executive Director of the Albany Law School Anthony V. Cardona '70 Moot Court Program. She describes how she arrived there and how amazing her experience has been thus far. In the end, Jennifer suggests to others to stay true to themselves and constantly improve one day at a time! Vicki is a University of West Los Angeles graduate and works as a Litigation Attorney at Morgan & Morgan. Vicki's journey exemplifies what I look to deliver on this podcast. After years in the insurance industry, Vicki would make the jump to Law School and the Law, further showing, that there is always time to start and that everyones journey is unique to them! Vicki and I started before Law School, where she worked as an adjustor in the insurance industry for years. After being able to see trials over the years in the insurance industry, she began to grow an aspiration for it. With this aspiration in mind, she decided to set off to the University of West Los Angeles for Law School. Vicki and I then spoke about her first year, but it was non-traditional doing the night program. Vicki balanced everything in her life throughout her time in Law School, putting her organizational skills to the test. Vicki would concede it being difficult, but implored others, just as she did, to ask professors to help as often as she could. We then moved through her Law School time, where she explored her interests, keying in on Moot Court, as a place where she found her love for plaintiff-side litigation. Vicki would then explore topics like the importance of breaking out of your comfort zone, exploring new territories, and putting yourself out there. Vicki would also speak about her current position at Morgan & Morgan, as well as her time as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of West Los Angeles. This podcast with Vicki is littered with wisdom from beginning to end, and one that also aligns perfectly with the tagline of this podcast, that there is no straight path, there is only your unique journey! Shmuel is a 2L at Chicago-Kent College of Law and works as an Intern at the Illinois Office of the State Attorney's Appellate Prosecutor. Shmuel's journey to the Law is just starting, but it's been nothing short of living the dream thus far! Shmuel and I start before he arrives at Law School. It was High School and Shmuel Applied and gained an internship at the Los Angeles County District Attorney. Being so young as an intern, he would become a sponge to all that he was learning, watching trials, and learning from his bosses, keeping a close eye on everything that went on. From that experience, he knew going forward, going to Law School was his dream. He would return to the same District Attorney's office for 2 out of the 3 next summers, before heading off to Touro College Los Angeles. During his time there, he would hold an additional file clerkship as well as work as a teacher's assistant at the same school he attended, for the same teacher he had. For Shmuel, this experience delivered on building those all-important soft skills, communication skills, and especially with 4th graders, having a ton of patience. We then moved to his entry into Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he would be shocked by the fact that he made it to Law School, describing it as living the dream! He would love the first year as well, having interesting material to work with, and the chance to focus solely on school. Shmuel would describe the various internships, clerkships, and externships he held throughout the last 2 years, up until the present day. One clerkship, in particular, was found through this podcast, as Shmuel would work for former guest, Yisrael Gelb, at Gelb Law APC. Shmuel would find Yisrael through this podcast, meet with him, and then many months later, would see Yisrael was looking for employees, and would reach out leading to an eventual hire, a prime example of the power of networking! Finally, Shmuel would speak about how his faith would play an impact on his life thus far, allowing for something to fall back on when all is lost, and an opportunity to look at the big picture, because in the end, it all works out for the better, no matter what. Marco is a University of Nebraska College of Law graduate and currently works as the Owner of Brown Family Law. This episode with Marco is full of amazing insights, and a ton of philosophical wisdom about work, life, and the Law! Marco and I start years before arriving at Law School. He would start at the University of Anchorage Alaska, and then head off to BYU, first majoring in Physics, then deciding to change to a psychology major, following in his grandmother's footsteps. With a degree in psychology, Marco would take 2 years would serve a mission for his church in Italy, as well as work with intellectually impaired individuals. Being too combative to be a psychologist, he decided Law School would be the next step in his journey. Marco and I would speak about his first year in Law School in which he described it as Learning to read Chinese, while writing a manual, in Chinese. He handled it gracefully with a firehouse of information and loved it immensely. We then went into the various internships and clerkships he had. Marco would key in on the fact that he wanted to be a criminal defense attorney but was not great at it, allowing him to narrow it down from his options. He suggests that Law Students try a wide range of experiences, and get good at what they enjoy. On top of going through his journey of Law School, Marco would give some of his critiques of Law School. We then moved to Marco hanging his shingle, opening up Brown Law LLC. Marco would describe the first years as walking blind through hell. Marco would describe the story of how he got into divorce law and spoke about the importance of reinventing yourself and solving those big problems, that lead to the solutions of 100s of small problems, or what he calls, an apex problem. Finally, Marco and I spoke about his love for Kafka, as well as his love for Pizza, one of the reasons why we know god loves us. Evan is a New York University School of Law graduate and currently works as the Founding Member at Goodman Corporate Law. Evan's journey from biology major to Big Law Associate, and finally to opening up his firm, is full of wisdom, and amazing insights. Evan and I started before Law School, at Boston University. Evan would be a biology major in pursuit of Med School but decided after taking some classes that it was not the route for him. He then decided Law School would be the place for him. We then entered his first year of Law School, which is loved. He never felt the work was overburdensome, but it was still an extremely competitive environment. Evan then discussed the various internships and clerkships he held during and after Law School. Evan would key in on a significant topic on the podcast. Finding out what he wanted to do with the law and also finding out what he did not want to do with the law in terms of specialization, through these experiences. We then moved to his big move to BigLaw, working at Willkie Farr and Gallagher as a corporate associate. With a 46th-floor office, overlooking New York City, Evan would experience a ton of trial by fire, but still represented an extremely productive and grew his knowledge of the law immensely. Then we spoke about his lateral move to Akin, where we would discuss the importance of the work environment, which included, finding those mentors to help get adjusted as well as consulting and building a network for advice and guidance to know more before entering any position. In addition to this Evan would speak on mentorship, and how it leads to success in any law firm, as well as helping build a platform for anyone, to build credibility further. Danielle Mikaelian is a 3L at Harvard Law School and works as a Legal Fellow at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Danielle Mikaelian's journey is a testament to putting yourself out there and getting involved on campus, leading to the achievement of unbelievable success. Danielle Mikaelian and I start way before her entry into Law School. Before even arriving at Columbia, Danielle Mikaelian would be involved at her high school, as well as her community in big ways. This trend would continue all the way up to today and is something Danielle Mikaelian would make an impactful point about. Danielle Mikaelian after high school would make the cross-country trip, and arrive at Columbia University, to study English. With mass amounts of internships and jobs throughout her career at Columbia, she would on top of all of this be extremely involved on campus. Danielle Mikaelian would note how valuable it was being involved, from making friends to gaining a global network of connections in the world's melting pot, she would even go on to say that the best form of learning for her was her involvement on campus. Danielle Mikaelian would start a journal, as well as be a part of one of the only undergraduate Law Reviews in the country at Columbia. Additionally, she would speak on her legal undergraduate internship, reflecting on the amount of skills she gained, which included practical skills she would use later in Law School, and exposure to the legal profession and various routes would could go down. We then moved to her entry to one of, if not the most prestigious Law School in the world, Harvard Law School. She would give a window into her first year of Law School, which she loved, but was vigorous, competitive, and a time that needed quick, adaptable learning. She would stress the fact of reaching out to alumni and upperclassmen for advice, utilizing study groups, and consulting those people who did it before her. Finally, Danielle Mikaelian and I would highlight all of the illustrious awards, programs, and internships she has experienced throughout her time so far at Harvard. She would work as a student attorney in various fields of law, working with early-stage startups, as well as giving incredible advice about Law School admissions, something we on the podcast may come back to later. Danielle Mikaelian truly is one of the most impressive and accomplished Law Students I have ever encountered. She will be a major player in the legal field, in whatever she decides to pursue, for the years to come. You don't want to miss this one! Andrew is a current 2L at Ohio Northern University College of Law. Andrew's journey is far from linear, going down multiple avenues before finally entering the doors of Law School. Andrew and I started years before he stepped into a Law School classroom. He would graduate from Malone University and begin to pursue working in Public policy and government. He held a plethora of internships and jobs but also hit some roadblocks along the way. Andrew would miss out on a fellowship and not get two positions, but he constantly sent follow-ups and thank you's to those missed opportunities, which would lead to more opportunities for him. After having to start from scratch, and begin to bounce from Odd Job to odd job, Andrew finally decided it was time to head off to Law School. And indeed he did, landing himself at Ohio Northern University Claude Pettit College of Law. Throughout the entire conversation, Andrew spoke heavily about how faith played a role in his life, through all the ups and downs, as well as throughout Law School thus far. Finally, Andrew and I spoke about his first year, which was challenging, with an environment of survival and advancement. After years of not being in school, it was a huge adjustment to the school environment. Andrew would pick up a ton of newfound techniques that would propel him to Law School success, such as using a whiteboard for studying, recording himself on the topics for that end of the semester's test, and even using one of our sponsors, Lisa Blassers Pre-recorded course (lisablasser.com, Code LSOSNATE10 at checkout) to supplement his Law School Experience. Andrew's Journey represents the tagline of this podcast: there is no straight path to the Law or Law School, only your unique journey. Andrew's is one of the most unique I have come across. Amanda is a 3L at the University of Baltimore and currently works as a Law Clerk at Selzer Gurvitch. From dropping out of High School to a current third year Law Student, Amanda offers a journey that is uniquely hers, and illustrious from start to finish. Amanda and I started a full decade before going to Law School. Amanda always wanted to be a Lawyer but life threw some curveballs her way that had to put off that dream for some time. After an ankle injury in high school, Amanda dropped out of high school, later receiving her GED. She went on to work at American Airlines throughout her 20s and eventually began at Community College. She would do so well at Community College, to then be offered an opportunity to go to Harvard extension school, gaining a plethora of knowledge, and a great foundation for Law School. After the Covid Pandemic, hundreds of airline employees, later including her husband, were laid off, Amanda realized that her time in the airline industry was never certain, and needed something to fall back on. Inspired early in life by Atticus Finch of To Kill a Mockingbird, Amanda would embark on her Law School journey, at the University of Baltimore School of Law. Amanda would speak on her first year, which was full of struggle, not only dealing with law school, but the loss of her husband's job, her mother being diagnosed with Breast Cancer, as well as being a mother herself. Amanda would learn a great lesson in perseverance, learning how important it was to have such a strong support system around her and to ask for help when she needed it. Amanda would finish the year strong, and go on to hold clerkship and internships in multiple different domains. Amanda's advice to everyone? Imagine what life would be if you quit. This question would drive her to continue her success in Law School and secure her place at a job post-law school. Amanda's journey is a testament to her strong character, and courage to chase her dreams, despite some obstacles. Be sure to check out Amanda, as she is one you don't want to miss out on! Nikita is a First Year Student at Queen Mary University of London. Nikita is not only our 3rd guest from England but also our youngest, coming on at 18 years old! But Nikita's insights and experiences thus far in his life, are well beyond his years. Nikita and I started our discussion leading up to Solicitor school (Law School for you Americans). Born in Cyrpus, Nikita witnessed legal troubles at a young age, sparking his inspiration to go to Law School. Prior to arriving at Queen Mary University of London, Nikita had two legal internships and a position as a social media and brand manager. These internships would be a great value, offering transferable skills, as well as an introduction to LinkedIn. On top of this, Nikita got these positions all through cold reach out, further emphasizing always exposing yourself to new experiences and taking on as many new opportunities as possible. You never know what may lie on the other side of any given opportunity. Finally, Nikita and I fast-forwarded to today, reflecting on a tough, but fruitful first year. Nikita would speak on some early pitfalls he came up against, and how others can avoid it. In the end, Nikita's journey thus far is supremely inspiring, giving wisdom well beyond his years. I implore you all to check out Nikita, as he is certainly a Lawyer (or rather Solicitor) in the Making to look out for in the coming years!Nikita's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nikita-toma-yakushevBe sure to check out the Official Sponsors for the Lawyers in the Making Podcast:Rhetoric - takes user briefs and motions and compares them against the text of opinions written by judges to identify ways to tailor their arguments to better persuade the judges handling their cases. Karyn is a Boston University School of Law Graduate and currently works as the Founder, Chief Activator, and Systems Entrepreneur at Shift the Prism Advisory. Karyn's journey offers a masterclass on trying new things and being open to new jobs. All from what I call her as, The Master of Legal Financial Services. Karyn and I start in her first year of Law School at Boston University School of Law. Karyn would be one of those people who loved Law School, as she always wanted to be a lawyer and felt that experience was awesome to be a part of. Karyn notes that as a concrete theoretical thinker, the marriage between that and the facts of any given case was the perfect blend, that she would enjoy for the rest of her legal career. She also found the law to be an amazing vehicle to uplift others. We then moved to Karyn's post Law school experiences starting as a corporate attorney in the Big Law setting. She cherished the mentors she had early in her career, laying the foundation and groundwork for the great success that would ensue in her career. Then starting at Citi Bank, Karyn made a conscious decision to continue to gain experiences, being a student for life. For the following 6 years at Citi Bank, she would hold 5 different positions, all with the purpose of adding more value and skills to her arsenal, a prime example of a great approach to anyone's legal career. Finally, we spoke about her time at PNC, recruited for her amazing skills, and continued to hold different positions to gain even more skills. At the end of her career, she would have every job she could in legal financial services, becoming an expert to those interested in the industry. We also spoke about what she does today at Shift the Prism Advisory, advising, consulting, and coaching, supporting founders who impact their communities. This episode is a masterclass on navigating the legal financial services industry and offering as much value as possible to any employer. Mikko is a Dr. V. Orestes Romualdez Educational Foundation College of Law Graduate, and currently works as a Board Member of the Denning International Law Advisory Board doing high-impact research for Project Pakistan. Mikko's journey is riveting, spectacular, and full of wisdom as well as being our third international guest and our first law student from the Philippines!Mikko and I started almost a full decade before he decided to go to Law School. After graduating and beginning work as an accountant, Mikko would stay on that path, but life would change forever after a super typhoon hit the Philippines displacing him and losing his house, and his belongings. Mikko would turn to online work, being a link builder, and trying to find his way again. Years previous he wanted to attend law school in the capital of the Philippines but didn't have the money for it. After years of hard work, he would finally be able to get into Dr. V. Orestes Romualdez Educational Foundation College of Law.Mikko's first year, due to the pandemic, would be done online, making the transition easy, and loving the work that came with it. But the second year would represent an obstacle, as coming in person, Mikko's grades would drop, and doubt would cause him to almost drop out in that Fall semester. But after finding a mentor through a friend, Mikko would stick with Law school, ending Law school ranked 3rd among his peers. Mikko and I took a deep dive into his experience at the IBA ICC Moot Court Competition, which remains the highlight of his Law School journey. After 9 months of preparation, Mikko and his teammates would travel to the Netherlands for an amazing experience. Mikko would speak on this experience at great length, talking about the competition, and the great camaraderie with his fellow competitors making connections, and friends he still speaks to today. Finally, Mikko stresses to never give up, as you never want to close those potential doors that are on the other side of Law School. Additionally, Mikko has started a podcast of his own, the first episode linked below, all surrounding his love for international law and discussion about the international law issues in the world today. Juliet is an Arizona State University College of Law graduate and currently works as the Founding Partner of Framework Legal. Juliet's journey is as unique as they get, from journalist to Lawyer, this episode takes a deep dive into how she got to where she is today. Juliet and I started a decade before law school, where she graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor's degree in journalism. As a kid, Juliet always wanted to be a lawyer but her love for journalism would put that dream on pause. For the next decade Juliet would be a newscaster and journalist all over the country, working in Ohio, Corpus Christi Texas, and finally landing in Milwaukee. But Juliet would re-spark that childhood dream of hers, and land herself at Arizona State University College of Law. We would dive into Juliet's first year of law school, which she both loved and hated. She loved the learning aspect and getting acclimated with the Law, but highly disliked the pressure and stressful nature of one exam determining her grade for the semester. Her experience in Journalism allowed her to digest large swaths of information all at once, and be able to get through cases quickly. We then moved on to Juliet's post-law school jobs, two in particular we looked into were her time at Cold Stone Creamery, and as the Division chief at the Child and Family Division for Arizona. Cold Stone would be fun and chaotic, and supply her with the business chops she needed later in her career. As the division chief, she would lead the newly founded project, making a wholesale change and clean up to the department, further giving her skills that would become necessary when she finally hung her own shingle as the Founding Partner Framework legal. We then dove into her decade at Framework Legal, speaking about how to ask the correct questions to entrepreneurs, her experience as an entrepreneur, and the psychology behind it. On top of this, Juliet and I would speak about her psychological reinvention over the years, not being afraid of change, and never pigeonholing ourselves in lockstep with the rest of society. Juliet's long experience in the field and wide range of experiences serve for an episode full of wisdom and actionable insights! Brandon graduated from the University of Texas School of Law and currently works as a Partner at Mayer Brown. In this episode of Lawyers in the Making, I sit down with Brandon to unpack his extraordinary journey—a story woven with resilience, discovery, reinvention, and candid insights about life and law.We kick things off before law school, diving into Brandon's days as a Division 1 soccer player at Harvard. His time on the field shaped more than just his athletic prowess—it prepared him for the competitive rigors of the University of Texas School of Law. The competitive nature, at Harvard would translate seamlessly to Law School. Brandon reflects on his first year at Texas Law, an experience that was both grounding and transformative. Growing up in the area, he navigated familiar faces and new challenges, finding balance in the structured rhythm of law school. While litigation was always his goal, he shares a critical lesson: explore every corner of the legal field, embrace hands-on experiences, and find what truly resonates. As a first-year associate, Brandon's approach was refreshingly pragmatic: say yes enthusiastically, and set clear boundaries unapologetically. His ability to communicate what he could and couldn't take on not only earned the respect of his colleagues but also carved out precious time for his family—a priority he holds sacred. We round out the conversation with advice for aspiring lawyers, a deep dive into finding your niche, and an exploration of authenticity as the cornerstone of professional success. Of course, no episode of Lawyers in the Making would be complete without a touch of philosophy—and Brandon delivers in spades.Plus, we shine a spotlight on his podcast, The Unlawful Podcast, where he brings his trademark wit and wisdom to a whole new audience.Tune in for an episode packed with actionable advice, personal stories, and a fresh perspective on building a fulfilling career in law. Steve is a UConn School of Law Graduate and currently works as the organizing and Network Director at the People's Parity Project. This episode dives into one of the most compelling journeys yet, showcasing how winding roads often lead to powerful destinations. Steve's story embodies the very essence of this podcast: that there's no straight pathway into the legal field, only your unique journey! We kicked things off nearly two decades before law school ever crossed Steve's mind. A Boston University chemistry major, Steve made a bold decision to leave school and join the US Army. Later, he returned to finish his degree and launched a career as a researcher and scientist. But it was a legal struggle with the US Army that opened his eyes to the power of the law—sparking a passion he didn't yet realize. While still immersed in his scientific career, Steve dedicated more of his time to veterans' legal services. Gradually, his love for science waned as his commitment to law grew. Eventually, Steve took the plunge and enrolled at UConn School of Law.Law school wasn't smooth sailing. Just as Steve began his 1L year, the birth of his child and a major car accident set him back by a month. Yet, he powered through, leveraging the discipline and problem-solving skills he'd honed as a scientist. Our conversation reveals his evolving interest in public interest law, a field that calls to him deeply. Steve's clear sense of purpose has been his compass, helping him find joy and resilience through every challenge.Today, Steve is part of the People's Parity Project, rallying law students nationwide to make real changes in public interest law. From veterans' rights to systemic reform, Steve's work inspires others to bring about meaningful change. His journey reaffirms something I've long believed: anyone, regardless of background, can step into the field of law and make an impact. But it wasn't just combat that shaped Matt's future. A traumatic encounter with a platoon sergeant would plant the first seeds of his interest in law. From there, Matt honed a military-grade decision-making framework: meticulous planning, discipline, and adaptability. He carried these principles into civilian life, blazing through his undergraduate degree at Indiana University in just two years. His relentless thirst for knowledge and new challenges eventually led him to the University of Michigan Law School, where his first year tested him in ways both stressful and bittersweet.Throughout law school, Matt leaned on his military training—planning months in advance, minimizing distractions, and accepting the unpredictability of life. His discipline and focus paid off through a series of clerkships, internships, and trailblazing work with ChatGPT. Matt was among the first to integrate AI tools into his clerkship, turbocharging his productivity and offering a glimpse into the future of the legal profession. Now, as the Director and CFO of the Legal Accountability Project—a brainchild of former guest Aliza Shatzman—Matt continues to push boundaries, blending legal expertise with forward-thinking leadership. This conversation is packed with hard-earned wisdom, from battlefield grit to legal innovation. If there were a podcast hall of fame, this episode would be an instant inductee. Scott is a Baylor University School of Law Graduate and currently works as the Founder and Trial Lawyer of Snellings PLLC. Ever wonder what it's like to pivot from aspiring doctor to a lawyer, only to face one of life's biggest challenges just as you open your own law firm? In this episode, I sit down with Scott Snellings, who shares a deeply personal and professional story about reinvention, resilience, and creating meaningful success on his terms. We kick things off at Baylor University, where Scott initially set his sights on becoming a doctor. With a background in psychology and an EMT license under his belt, he seemed destined for medicine—until a D in Biology pushed him to rethink his path. This unexpected detour led him straight into the rigorous world of Baylor University School of Law, a completely different animal from any learning experience he'd encountered.Rather than chasing a niche specialization, Scott honed the meta-skill of learning itself—a decision that later became one of his biggest assets. His early interest in product liability landed him a role at Hartline, Dacus, Barger, Dreyer, and Kern, where he learned how to strategize, solve problems independently, and develop what he calls “the human side of the law.” Four years later, Scott decided it was time to bet on himself and open Snellings PLLC.But just two months into this new chapter, life threw him a curveball: he needed a kidney transplant. In a remarkable twist, his best friend turned out to be a perfect match. Scott returned to the firm with renewed energy and purpose, using his experience to shape a company culture grounded in core values and long-term vision. We also dive into The Driven Crowd Podcast, where Scott interviews high achievers to extract lessons on ambition, success, and personal growth. The podcast has not only enriched his personal development but has also become a powerful referral engine for his business. This conversation is more than just a career story—it's a masterclass in resilience, continuous learning, and building a life aligned with your values. Scott's journey from potential doctor to lawyer, through personal challenges and entrepreneurial success, is one you won't forget.Tune in to discover how setbacks can become turning points, and why core values are critical whether you're leading a law firm or hosting a podcast.Don't miss this episode—Scott's story will leave you inspired, motivated, and ready to tackle your own challenges head-on.Check out all of Scott's content, including his podcast and blog, below!Scott's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scott-snellingsScott's Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1945495Scott's Blog: https://snellingsinjurylaw.com/blog/Be sure to check out the Official Sponsors for the Lawyers in the Making Podcast:Rhetoric - takes user briefs and motions and compares them against the text of opinions written by judges to identify ways to tailor their arguments to better persuade the judges handling their cases. Chris is a University of Maine School of Law Graduate and works as Falcon Foward Group's owner. This episode is packed with grit, purpose, and transformation. Chris's story is one of the most unique and inspiring journeys we've featured yet—a story that begins not in the halls of law school, but on the tarmac, maintaining aircrafts for the U.S. Air Force. At first, Chris had no interest—or natural talent—for mechanical work. But life had other plans. He discovered a love for troubleshooting and developed a knack for solving complex problems quickly, a skill that would serve him well beyond the Air Force.Eventually, Chris earned a degree in Organizational Leadership from Columbia Southern University. The knowledge he gained wasn't just academic; it armed him with insight into the systemic issues plaguing his workplace. His time in the Air Force wasn't without hardship—Chris experienced whistleblower retaliation from a squad leader, an event that led him to retire but also ignited a new passion: the law.In 2019, Chris entered the University of Maine School of Law, driven by a tragic loss—two members of his former unit took their own lives that same year. For Chris, it was clear: the system was broken, and he was determined to fix it. Despite battling imposter syndrome in his first year, Chris found purpose in the law, filing public records requests and even influencing legislation. His legislation would push the Department of Defense towards releasing suicide data, a move that shed light on the crisis facing service members. As a Law Student in his 40s, Chris is living proof that it's never too late to reinvent yourself. His journey and fight for justice is far from over, and as he puts it, "There's still a lot of work to do."Today, Chris is the host of the 20 Years Done podcast and the founder of Falcon Forward Law Group, where he fights tirelessly for veterans nationwide. His energy and relentless advocacy bring a powerful new dimension to this episode.Tune in to hear Chris's inspiring story firsthand, from aircraft troubleshooting to legislative victories—and everything in between. Erin is a Tulsa College of Law Graduate and works as the Founder and CEO of Powerhouse Lawyers. Erin's story is all about pivots, resilience, and becoming what she calls the "CEO of her life." In this episode, we dive into her unconventional path from an uncertain undergrad to the founder of Powerhouse Lawyers, where she empowers women in the legal world through community and connections. We begin with Erin's leap into law school, not out of passion, but because, in her words, she simply didn't know what else to do. What's fascinating is that, despite her initial ambivalence, Erin fell in love with the intellectual challenge law school provided. Key to her success? A strong support system that helped her navigate those rigorous years with unexpected ease. But Erin's story doesn't follow a straight line. Post-graduation, things got rocky. It took nearly a year to land her first legal job, and even then, she felt uninspired. Despite completing law school, nothing in the legal field ever clicked for her. This became a recurring theme in her career, which she discusses candidly in our conversation — maybe the law wasn't her true calling after all.And yet, every great story has its breakthrough moment. Erin eventually found her passion outside the traditional legal path, founding Powerhouse Lawyers to create a network for women lawyers seeking more out of their careers and lives. In this episode, Erin shares actionable insights on personal development: asking the right questions, gaining clarity on what you want, and cultivating the mindset necessary for transformative change. We also dive into her Powerhouse Lawyers retreat, where like-minded women step away from the daily grind to reflect on their goals and reimagine what's possible. Alden is a University of South Florida Graduate and currently works as the Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Start LSAT. This week, I sit down with Alden, a 21-year-old whose story is just beginning, yet it's already packed with enough twists, lessons, and ambition to inspire anyone. Alden and I started at his internship before college, yes, before college. He started down a finance route but quickly realized that kind of work couldn't incorporate the intellectual stimulation and creative thinking Alden was always yearning for.Arriving in South Florida, Alden dove into his first legal internship at Spinks Law Firm, where he got his hands dirty in probate, wills, and trusts. The experience ignited something in him. Suddenly, the clarity hit—this is what he wanted to do. The law was his calling. Then came a major turning point: leading the University of South Florida's Ice Hockey team as president. Here, Alden's entrepreneurial spirit was put to the test. Handling a $100K budget and overseeing two teams taught him the ins and outs of leadership, all while boosting team morale. The game-changer? A bold move to redesign the team's jerseys, resulting in $20K in sales and features on TSN and FanDuel's social media. Alden wasn't just leading a team—he was building a brand.Fast forward to today: Alden is cutting his teeth as a paralegal at the world-renowned Morgan and Morgan, where he's already flexing his legal muscles in litigation and motion practice. The freedom to craft his own arguments has him thinking about the next frontier—mergers and acquisitions. But as always, Alden keeps his options open. And then, there's the LSAT. After three months of dedicated study, Alden didn't just pass—he aced it with a perfect 180. This wasn't just a personal victory; it was the spark for a business idea. Enter Start LSAT, Alden's brainchild offering affordable, high-quality LSAT prep. Not only did he build the curriculum from scratch, but he also taught himself to code, designed his own website, and crafted interactive videos. At just 21, Alden's achievements are staggering, but what stands out most is his relentless curiosity and drive. His story is proof that brilliance knows no age, and he's only just getting started. I have no doubt Alden will be a force in the legal world for years to come.Alden's LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/aldensprattStart LSAT: https://www.startlsat.com/Be sure to check out the Official Sponsors for the Lawyers in the Making Podcast:Rhetoric - takes user briefs and motions and compares them against the text of opinions written by judges to identify ways to tailor their arguments to better persuade the judges handling their cases. Bradley is a Capital University Law School graduate and currently works as the Managing Member and Attorney at Miller Law and the Founder of the New Modern Lawyer Podcast. In this episode, I sit down with Bradley, a trailblazer in the world of virtual law firms. His path to becoming a lawyer is one of self-discovery and innovation, beginning with a dream of becoming a judge and evolving into something much more.Bradley and I dive into the early challenges he faced in law school, from the culture shock of transitioning from undergrad to navigating the rigors of 1L. But it was his unwavering solo attitude—his ability to carve out his path—that became a defining characteristic throughout his career.Right after law school, Bradley took the bold step of hanging his shingle. This move set the stage for him to join Burton Law and help pioneer one of the first virtual law firms—back in 2011 when working remotely as a lawyer was almost unheard of. Fast forward to the pandemic, and Bradley's approach became the blueprint for modern legal practice. We discuss his role as a lawyer transformation coach and his podcast, The New Modern Lawyer, where he shares key principles of virtual law and insights from the CLEs he's led over the years. Finally, we zero in on goal-setting and the importance of being intentional, specific, and relentless in pursuit of what you want.Bradley's wisdom on virtual law, personal discipline, and the future of the legal profession is not to be missed.
