About Guest, Rah Kalon A self-love activist, life coach, and specialist. Rah works with individuals seeking to re-establish a loving relationship with themselves within, and outside of, social standards because we are more than what our social influences have taught us. Her guiding philosophy is Self-love is a daily practice, not just a once a month spa day, and when this practice has been embraced, its healing can help us navigate all other aspects of our lives - Relationships thrive; Opportunities are recognized; & Trauma is processed. After receiving her Masters in Clinical Counseling, Rah Kalon chose Self-love coaching as a way to fill the cups of countless others with something she has an abundance of - love. And this isn't just any love. This is Radical Self L.O.V.E., she uses her energy of acceptance, warmth, and empathy to assist others in unlocking this within themselves. Growth is exhilarating when you are growing with someone who loves you, so allow me the honor of re-introducing you to yourself. About Host, Karla Nivens: After graduating from Texas Tech University, Karla earned her teaching certificate and began her career as an elementary music teacher in the Dallas Independent School District. She also sang for Grammy award-winning Gospel recording artists Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans, Fred Hammond, Donnie McClurkin, Crystal Lewis, Willie Neal Johnson, John P. Kee, Alvin Slaughter, Tamela Mann, and Michael Buble'. She's traveled the world and ministered to diverse audiences in music. During her travels, she had the opportunity to sing on the Jay Leno Show, Soul Train, the Stellar Awards, and the Billy Graham Crusade with Kirk Franklin. She took a hiatus while staying at home with her children for several years and re-entered the workforce as a worship leader at Highland Park United Methodist Church. Karla has worshipped with Highland Park for the past 17 years. Currently, Karla is building the Racial Justice ministry for Highland Park UMC. Karla has also served as an adjunct instructor for Visible Music College and in 2014 released a CD entitled “True Worship.” Five years ago a good friend suggested she turn her heart toward fulfilling the Great Commission. Karla began traveling on yearly mission trips to Costa Rica and Africa. On those trips the Lord began to awaken the motto He gave her in college – “Influencing Culture for the Good of the Kingdom.” As an answer to this awakening, Karla and Dr. Roosevelt founded Karla Nivens Entertainment. Under this umbrella, Karla partnered with Love Ministries, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, started a small group for women, and a radio show both titled “Every Heart Every Woman.” Karla encourages her audience to quiet the noise and restore balance in their daily lives through inspirational entertainment. The show airs Sundays as a podcast on iTunes and Podbean weekly. The show also airs in video on YouTube. In 2019, Karla released her book, True Leaders with Heart, packed with weekly meditations for leaders.

It was in my prison cell, for the first time in my life, I faced my demons and challenges head on. I was able to completely transform my entire life behind bars. My attitude, my mentality, and my daily routines were all adjusted and allowed me to create new outcomes and results within my life. My personal transformation and the steps I took while incarcerated is what I wish to share with anyone who feels lost or hopeless in their life right now. These life changing steps saved my life and freed me from addiction, negative thinking and living life carelessly. I want you to know that no matter what you go through deep within you is the capacity to persevere and create a life you love and cherish.

After completing his Associate’s Degree at Sage College of Albany, majoring in Multimedia/Visual Arts, he began independent video work such as filming weddings and parties for clients. Soon after his long Recovery from major mental illness through his twenties and early thirties with a diagnosis of Schizo Affective Disorder, he discovered NAMI – the National Alliance on Mental Illness, where he became a IOOV presenter trained by none other than Lady Charmaine. He later went on to become an active NAMI Board Member in Fulton, Montgomery and Hamilton Counties for two years. Independently, Jason created his own presentation story and became a professional motivational speaker addressing agencies, groups, colleges and schools with a unique custom designed multimedia presentation of his Recovery story, which has been shown at various educational engagements throughout the Northeast. It's been a long road of many ups and downs and many creative endeavors but today, Jason has finally finished a 15 year project he lovingly calls this colorful cast of characters His Quirkz that seek to destigmatize people’s fears around talking about mental illness. Jason recently invented and patented a little phone gizmo called “The OopsLoop” that uniquely prevents people from dropping their phones, all while helping raise funds for future creative projects that raise mental health awareness! His creativity has always been his best antidepressant and he hopes his experiences and story can creatively help others feel more comfortable with talking about mental health issues as well. Hello Couragemakers and welcome to episode 82 of The Courgemakers Podcast! Before we dive into this week's wonderful episode, I want to let you know that Couragemakers turns 2 this week and there is going to be a very special behind the scenes episode on Wednesday where past guest, the lovely Katie Snyder is interviewing me! I think you're going to love the birthday special and I'm excited to share it with you! For this week's episode, I'm talking with Kerstin Pressler. Kerstin is a fine artist, who lives between the borders of Germany and the Netherlands and has been living the creative life for nearly a decade. Through The Sparkling Creative, Kerstin is a mentor to visual creatives who strive to live their creative passion without suffering financially and seek to combine their creative passion with entrepreneurialism. You can usually find her in her studio, where she's creating new artworks daily. When she's not working on one of her artworks or taking care of her amazing creative clients, she's out and about exploring nature with her son and husband. What is making Kerstin extremely happy right now is having time to experiment with new pens and papers. In this episode we're diving into the myth of being a starving artist. We're talking all about the intersection between creativity and making money, and have a really honest conversation about what that looks like. Kerstin shares her story, from choosing to go to art school and business school at the same time, what helps her stay focused and disciplined to get her work done as a creative and the behind the scenes of how she runs her business. We dive into figuring out what you want versus what you think you should want, some practical tips around vision boards and journalling and how looking after yourself is a key part of running a business. We talk about how Kerstin has fallen in love with the business side of her creative business, some books she recommends as well as how the myth of the starving artist is a choice and we have the ability to merge creativity and money without sacrificing our values. I think it's fair to say that as creatives, talking about money can often feel weird and awkward, and this is a wonderful way to really start having that honest conversation with ourselves and remind ourselves that sustaining ourselves through our work isn't selfish. As Kerstin says, we each have magic fairy dust as creatives that only we can give, and sharing that with the world is a great thing! This is going to be a great episode for the any one thinking about making money through their art, any one who runs a business and anyone who really wants a great behind the scenes glimpse at what it takes to run a creative business! In this episode, we do some myth busting about the value of paying collective taxes. We see how an American expat learnt to appreciate something about his host nation that would raise eyebrows and receive loads of criticism back home. It is often veryhard for an expat to communicate the way other people in differentparts of the world are living and how the particular system theylive under would be of some good use elsewhere. ABOUT GUEST: Tom Heberlein is a retired environmental sociologist professorfrom Wisconsin now living with his wife in Stockholm, Sweden. Tomexplains how he fell in love with Sweden. He also explains why themyth and mystery of paying high taxes in Sweden is misinterpretedbuy many Americans. Tom also takes the time to explain step-by-stepwhy logical and fair tax paying is better for the collectivecommunity. Six Reasons Why to appreciate SwedishTaxes: Swedish income taxes aren’t much higher than US taxes. Alsotaxes in Sweden provide universal medical and education. Tax forms are simple. In fact, Swedish tax forms come alreadyfilled out! There is NO property tax. Sales taxes in Sweden are higher but far less noticeable andincluded in a sale. People who pay taxes in Sweden are given a cash return insteadof hard to calculate deductions. Slightly higher taxes in Sweden give tax payers more choicesand, in turn, freedoms. MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: I’m anAmerican Living in Sweden. Here’s why I came to embrace thehigher taxes. Related Article: Living in Switzerland ruined me for America and its lousy workculture.
