For our season finale, I bring you the glorious Maggie O'Farrell. She is one of my favourite authors, and her books include the highly acclaimed novels After You'd Gone, The Hand That First Held Mine, Instructions for a Heatwave and the bestselling memoir I Am, I Am, I Am. Her most recent work of fiction, Hamnet, imagined the untold story of Shakespeare's son who died at the age of 11. It won the 2020 Women's Prize. She joins me to talk about resurrecting the untold stories of women, how to be a writer and a parent (Cyril Connolly and his 'pram in the hallway' come in for a bit of a bashing) as well as how she applies concepts of success and failure to her books. She talks about her stammer and her failure to do a PhD and we also discuss how a childhood illness changed her forever, and the various physical repercussions that she still lives with. Plus: why she always finds the back of a tapestry far more interesting than the front... * Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell is out now. You can buy all her books here. * My new novel, Magpie, is out on 2nd September. I'd love it if you felt like pre-ordering as it really helps authors! You can do that here. * How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted by Elizabeth Day, produced by Naomi Mantin and Chris Sharp. We love hearing from you. GRAMMY nominated musician Dr. Martin Taylor, MBE, is a virtuoso guitarist, composer, educator and musical innovator whom Acoustic Guitar magazine calls ‘THE Acoustic Guitarist of his Generation'. Widely considered to be the world's foremost exponent of solo jazz and fingerstyle guitar playing, Martin possesses an inimitable style that has earned him global acclaim from fellow musicians, fans and critics alike. He dazzles audiences with a signature style that artfully combines his virtuosity, emotion and humor with a strong, engaging stage presence. Taylor has enjoyed a remarkable musical career spanning across five decades, with more than 100 recordings to his credit. Completely self-taught beginning at the early age of 4, he has invented and developed a unique way of playing the guitar that is greatly admired, and often emulated, by guitarists all over the world. In addition to his solo concerts and recordings, he has also collaborated with musicians from many different musical genres, including: Jeff Beck, Tommy Emmanuel, Bill Wyman, Chet Atkins, Stephane Grappelli, David Grisman, George Harrison, Jamie Cullum, Bryn Terfel, Dianne Schuur and Gary Burton.Taylor brings a rich and varied musical heritage to his play, to the extent that Tommy Emmanuel remarked that [Taylor] is “a portal into all that came before.” Over his stellar career, Taylor has amassed a record 14 British Jazz Awards as a guitarist. Several of his albums have been in the Top 10 in the USA and Europe.HistoryFrom 1979 to 1990, he toured the world and recorded over 20 albums with the French jazz violin legend STEPHANE GRAPPELLI. Their album with Vassar Clements “Together At Last” won a Grammy Nomination in 1987. Monsieur Grappelli described him as “A great artist, rich in talent and elegance.”His ground breaking solo album ARTISTRY, produced by Steve Howe, was released in 1992 to much critical acclaim. It was #1 in the HMV Jazz Charts for a record 12 weeks and launched his career as an international solo artist. After two very successful albums for Sony/Columbia, KISS AND TELL and NITELIFE, he went on to record several albums for The Guitar Label. In 1999, Taylor was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of The West of Scotland, and in 2002, he was appointed MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) “For Services To Jazz Music” on The Queen's Birthday Honours List, which he received personally from Her Majesty The Queen at an investiture at Buckingham Palace. His autobiography “Martin Taylor- Autobiography of a Travelling Musician” was released in 2005.In 2007, Taylor received the prestigious BBC Radio 2 “Heart of Jazz” Award in recognition of his career in music and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Wales Jazz Guitar Festival for his “Contribution to Jazz Guitar Worldwide”.2010 was a landmark year for Martin Taylor. The year started with the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama presenting him with his second honorary doctorate. In April 2010, the Martin Taylor Guitar Academy was launched, an online guitar school that propelled Taylor into becoming one of the world's most recognized and beloved online guitar teachers. This innovative online learning program has been featured on NPR, BBC, Fox News and in the Los Angeles Times and today has students in over 60 countries.Another milestone was reached in 2010 with the world premier of an exciting new work for guitar, orchestra and big band with the creation of Martin Taylor's 'Spirit of Django Suite'. Based on themes by Martin Taylor and arranged by Guy Barker, the debut featured Martin Taylor, his group Spirit of Django, the Guy Barker Big Band, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.Later that year, Taylor was invited to perform a special private concert at Windsor Castle for Prince William on the eve of his engagement to Kate Middleton. 2011 featured extensive touring of the Far East, USA, Europe and UK as Martin's new online profile introduced his music to younger and more international audiences. Taylor also launched the first two models in his own guitar range with Korea-based guitar manufacturer Peerless. The 'Maestro' and 'Virtuoso' have gone on to achieve both critical and commercial success globally. With the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics in 2012, the BBC made a special performance of the 'Spirit of Django Suite' by Martin Taylor and the Britten Symphonia part of their Proms concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall. Later that year, Taylor joined the International Guitar Night for a three-month tour of the US and Canada. In 2013, Martin played over 120 shows, as well as finding time to release a new duo album with Tommy Emmanuel and guest on a second album with British actor and blues musician Hugh Lawrie. At the year's end, Taylor received the BrandLaureate International Brand Personality Award in Asia. Previous recipients have included Steve Jobs, Hillary Clinton, Nelson Mandela and Mark Zuckerberg. 2014 sees Taylor undertaking extensive touring, both solo and with his new group, The Great Guitars. Film/TV CreditsHis film credits include the French comedy “Milou En Mai” directed by Louis Malle, and more recently his composition, “Green Lady” is featured in the Andrew Piddington movie “The Killing of John Lennon”. His many TV credits include the theme music for “After You've Gone” featuring Nicholas Lyndhurst and Celia Imrie, and the cult “Nicole-Papa” TV commercials for the Renault Clio. When not touring, Martin Taylor divides his time between Scotland and California, where the Martin Taylor Guitar Academy is based.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
In conversation with Nicole Galland, historical novelist and author of Master of the Revels and creator of Shakespeare for the Masses With a ''gift for combining intricate, engrossing plots with full-bodied characterizations'' (Washington Post), Irish–British novelist Maggie O'Farrell is the author of After You'd Gone, The Distance Between Us, The Hand That First Held Mine, and Instructions for a Heatwave, among several others. A former journalist in Hong Kong, deputy literary editor of the Independent on Sunday, and creative writing teacher, she is also a bestselling author. O'Farrell's work has won the Somerset Maugham Award, the Betty Trask Award, the Costa Award, and has been translated into more than 30 languages. Hamnet, winner of the 2020 Women's Prize for Fiction, tells the Elizabethan-era tale of William Shakespeare's family including his force–of–nature wife, Shakespeare's journey as a rising star, and the shared grief over the loss of their son Hamnet whose name Shakespeare would later use in his play Hamlet. Books available through the Joseph Fox Bookshop (recorded 6/3/2021)
In the final episode of the third series (thank you for listening!), Maggie O'Farrell joins me from her home in Edinburgh. Maggie is the author of eight novels, including After You'd Gone, This Must Be The Place and Hamnet, which last year won the Women's Prize for Fiction. She also wrote the unsettling 2017 memoir I Am I Am I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death. She describes the Victorian greenhouse-turned-studio where her books take shape, and talks about the difficulty of knowing where to begin; the laborious but valuable experience of getting her first novel published, and why she loves it when a manuscript veers off course. You can find Maggie's books and those of other guests of the podcast here, along with a selection of books on writing that I've found helpful: https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/in-writing

Anne and William Shakespeare’s son Hamnet died in 1596, when he was 11 years old. We don’t know too much more about him. But novelist Maggie O’Farrell’s new book "Hamnet" delves into his story and comes away with a lyrical and moving portrait of a family’s grief. The novel is focused not so much on William Shakespeare—in fact, O’Farrell never actually mentions his name in the book—as it is on his family back in Stratford, and how they cope with Hamnet’s tragic death. On this episode, we talk to Maggie O’Farrell about how the idea for "Hamnet" came to her, the way she imagines Shakespeare and his family, and what she learned in the process of writing the book. She is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. Maggie O'Farrell is the author of eight novels: "After You'd Gone"; "My Lover's Lover"; "The Distance Between Us"; "The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox"; "The Hand That First Held Mine; Instructions for a Heatwave"; and "This Must Be the Place." Her latest, "Hamnet," was published in the US by Knopf in 2020. It has been short listed for the 2020 Women’s Prize for Fiction. From the Folger’s Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Richard Coles and Nikki Bedi are joined by Graeme Garden - one third of the Goodies along with Bill Oddie and the late Tim Brooke-Taylor. In the classic BBC television show the trio played agents for hire and would do "anything, anywhere, anytime". Astride their trusty ‘Trandem’ – a three-seater bicycle – they tackled a giant kitten, parodied westerns with a Cornish version called “Bunfight at the OK Tea Rooms” and were chased by a giant Dougal from Magic Roundabout. Graeme also created I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, the long-running Radio 4 show on which he is still a panellist and, with producer Jon Naismith, devised the Unbelievable Truth on Radio 4. Jojo Moyes is a novelist and journalist. Her books include the bestsellers Me Before You, After You and Still Me and The Girl You Left Behind. Me Before You has now sold over 14 million copies worldwide and was adapted into a major film starring Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke. JoJo’s latest novel, The Giver of Stars, is based on a mobile library service launched by Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1930s. The Pack Horse Library Project was an initiative in which female volunteers on horseback delivered paperbacks to families in rural Kentucky who did not have access to books. Giles Clark is a conservationist who is taking on the illegal wildlife trade and helping to build a pioneering new bear sanctuary in Laos, Southeast Asia. He'll be talking about rescuing sun and moon bears and the perils of having bears about the house. And Garry Crothers, who lost an arm in a motorbike accident, joins us to talk about his epic journey - a 4,000 mile solo voyage from the Caribbean to his home in Northern Ireland. Presenter and author Fern Britton chooses her Inheritance Tracks - Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer by Nat King Cole and (You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman by Carole King. Plus a listener says thank you to a stranger who helped her at a difficult time. Producer: Paula McGinley Editor: Richard Hooper
Welcome to Rules and Roles, a tabletop RPG podcast in two parts. In this episode, we doff our red monogrammed hats to play Mario is After You, Lin-Manuel Miranda, by Anne Kirn. Listen as we flood a Manhattan apartment, invoke the particularly horrifying specter of Lou Dobbs, play Mario Kart, and eat delicious pull-apart bread. It gets weird, folks. Time to conclude our look at the "After You" division and it's time for the Texans and the Titans. The Texans possibly had one of the poorer off seasons of the teams we've covered so far, or at least one with the most questionable decisions, but we look at whether it's all actually part of the plan that Bill has in Houston. The Titans may finally have worked out who they are. Their problem may be everyone else has now, too. Enjoy!
Pacific Range are a new band out of Los Angeles that we are really digging. In fact, their new album High Upon the Mountain is one of our favorite records of the year so far, and for good reason. The band's sound is a throwback to stuff we really dig, like the Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead, The Byrds, and Crosby Stills and Nash. The four piece uses harmonies, sweet grooves, and great guitar licks, to bring you into a very laid back west coast vibe. All kinds of people we have talked to in the past were involved in the project so we were stoked to learn more about the band. So we contacted Curation Records, a new label also out of LA and got in touch with Seamus Turner, the band's principle songwriter, vocalist and lead guitar player. Create a Legacy that Lives on After You with Melissa Mull “Awaken and live from your inner beauty, fire, and truth.” — Dianne A. Allen In this week’s episode, Dianne A. Allen welcomes Melissa Mull as her special guest to talk about creating a legacy that lives on after you. Part One of ‘Create a Legacy that Lives on After You’ Melissa Mull is an international speaker, author, educator, business owner, and Air Force Reservist. She is the founder and CEO of Veteran Companions, a home care agency that provides companion care and many other services for Veterans, Wounded Warriors, and their families. She also facilitates a program she developed entitled "Beyond the Box" for separating and/or retiring military members and first responders transitioning from their service in uniform to civilian life. Melissa has twenty-five years of experience as a Military Intelligence Chief, Professional Military Education Instructor, Master Resilience Trainer, Certified Curriculum Developer, Middle and High School Teacher, and certified trainer for Jack Canfield. Her career has focused on education and development, mentoring and teaching about leadership, followership, team building, resilience, and the importance of personal growth. “Veterans are fantastic entrepreneurs.” – Melissa Mull Melissa Mull is a military legacy who's dedicated to serving others. She was originally born in Washington, D.C., but grew up on the Maryland side, right outside of Andrews Air Force Base with her single mom and brother. They spent a lot of time at her grandparent's house. Her grandfather is a retired Army and spent almost twenty-five years in the navy. Melissa spent two years in the army, and despite the challenges, she felt like it was indeed her calling. She will retire at the end of this year with twenty years of service. Part Two of ‘Create a Legacy that Lives on After You’ During her younger years, she dared to learn as much as she can, because the more knowledge that you have, the more you can navigate through different situations that you get into. You'll never know who you're going to run into and can help you see the other side of the coin. Sometimes we think that life is all about following everything other people say. You can use better discernment and better decisions on your own too. It's part of being successful and learning how to navigate an insensitive world. You have to learn how to navigate differently than the average ones out there. “Make it happen and allow the change.” – Melissa Mull Being a visionary leader means navigating all of our gifts, uniqueness, and have them come together in something that has meaning. It's so vital that we step up and create a legacy that is far larger than us that ripples out longer down generations that authentically serve people in an aligned way. It's magical to watch a legacy unfold from somebody who's so aligned with the pure heart. Allison Kaplan Sommer, Don Futterman and Noah Efron discuss three topics of incomparable importance and end with an anecdote about something in Israel that made them smile this week. --(Jewish) Might Makes Right?-- A once-mild religious Zionist party joins forces with a far-far-right religious party. What’s this say about the soul and politics of religious Zionism today? --The Reparation, Palliation and Adjuration Rumination-- For decades, once hapless immigrants to Israel from Yemen, Iraq and other Mid-eastern countries have said that, 70 years ago, their babies were taken and never returned. Some say that, until there is hard-and-fast evidence, these claims must be treated with suspicion. But shouldn’t we switch the default to trusting the victims? --The Decade Surveyed-- What were the most important people, events and trends of Israel’s momentous, trying, eventful past decade? --“They’re Not After Me, They’re After You!”-- For our most unreasonably generous Patreon supporters, in our extra-special, special extra segment, we discuss a meme pressed into service recently by PM Netanyahu, before that by US President Donald Trump and before that Indian PM Narendra Modi, saying, in each case, “They’re not after me, they’re after you! I’m just standing in the way.” What makes this sad bit of populism so easily transferable between three such different societies, in this sad epoch of populism? All this and the music of Noa Shapira! --Music-- Noa Shapira Seratim (סרטים), featuring Almot ha-Hen ‘Im (אם) Oy, He Yafah (אוי היא יפה) Ke-she-At Holekhet (כשאת הולכת)
On this week’s Fretboard Journal Podcast, we’re talking to guitarist/instructor Jason Loughlin. Loughlin’s latest project is Sound on Sound, a rather unconventional TrueFire course dedicated to teaching the multi-track arranging of Les Paul. Over the course of the lesson, Loughlin walks students through a nine-guitar (!) arrangement of the jazz standard "After You’ve Gone." Though it sounds daunting, Loughlin is able to easily break down and demystify how recordings like this are made and reveal some of Les' favorite tone hacks, like emulating the sound of drums and bass via his six-string guitar. We also talk to Loughlin about how to encapsulate those classic Les Paul sounds with modern gear, some of Loughlin's other loves – like early Sun Records recordings – and much more. This week’s Fretboard Journal Podcast is sponsored by Mono and Retrofret Vintage Guitars. Don’t forget to also tune into the Truth About Vintage Amps podcast, which is about to celebrate its first birthday. Recently while having lunch with a business colleague she said something that stuck with me. Her words were "the other day I went back to my office and I knocked everything off my desk that wasn't bringing me a profit." that was incredibly powerful to me. And I kept thinking about that statement. There are several ways to look at this ... you can say I'm getting rid of everything that isn't making money but I always think a bit deeper and what I was thinking is anything that isn't bearing fruit of course AFTER YOU plant the seeds. Nicola describes how busy and stressed she’s been feeling over the recent month or so. Given that she doesn’t work full time she wonders why she never has time to do her creative writing which she schedules for the afternoons but mostly ends up cancelling. What’s the answer to feeling too busy and/or too stressed? In The Show Nicola’s been flat out catching up. She’s recorded 14 one-minute videos, two vzines and six Write Club podcasts. She’s worked closely with her new VA, bringing her up to speed, supported Phoebe through a second job interview, borne some banking admin stress and been out three nights on the trot. Busy, busy, busy. Judith was up all night for the Oscars, and she’s grateful for a second PPI win. She appeals to the listener as her current housesitting gig is nearly up and Nicola has a genius idea about the Stoupa Life group as lots of people are about to come out for the summer leaving their UK homes empty for long periods of time. What's Fuelled Their Fire? Nicola is excited about Google Optimise which is free and enables you to test things on your own website with ease. Judith has two new clients in her diary today, one of whom followed the ideal fast route to becoming a client, finding Judith via Google, buying her book, reading it (!) and booking herself into Judith’s online diary, all within one week. Judith has taken on the challenge of increasing the Own It! Patrons from five people paying $19 between them to sufficient in number to create $100 per month which would cover the podcast’s costs. If you’d like to be one of those who contribute a few dollars a month, there’s a link to Patreon on our podcast website or you can go straight to Patreon.com/NicolaCairnX. Focus Of The Week Nicola describes how busy and stressed she’s been feeling over the recent month or so. Given that she doesn’t work full time she wonders why she never has time to do her creative writing which she schedules for the afternoons but mostly ends up cancelling. What’s the answer to feeling too busy and/or too stressed? Judith and Nicola discuss creating a buffer, getting ahead, better planning, addressing the feelings themselves, running to catch up, deadlines, and stress and time management. Words Of The Week Nicola chooses Current and Judith picks Leadership. Project Updates Nicola’s sold her third business book in as many weeks, this time on a PWYW basis and is delighted the purchaser chose to pay $10. She reports podcast downloads at 96,777 and predicts 100k in the next seven weeks. Judith sidestepped her writing on the day after the Oscars, and updates Nicola with progress on selling her BTL flat in Worthing – zero progress in the first nine days. Who Or What's Impressed Nicola has enjoyed reading all night, After You’d Gone by Maggie O’Farrell and Judith is impressed by a quote from screenwriter William Goldman which she picked up from Samuel L. Jackson at the Oscars. Thanks for listening! Reading West features Canadian writers talking about their books...specifically writers who live in Western Canada. This episode features Lori Hahnel reading her short story, Vermin, and Todd Devonshire reading from his novel Rink Burgers. Lori Hahnel is the author of two novels, Love Minus Zero (Oberon, 2008) and After You’ve Gone (Thistledown, 2014), as well as a story collection, Nothing Sacred (Thistledown, 2009), which shortlisted for an Alberta Literary Award. Her work has been nominated for the Journey Prize three times and has appeared in over forty publications in North America, Australia and the U.K. Her credits include CBC Radio, The Fiddlehead, Joyland and The Saturday Evening Post. Lori teaches creative writing at Mount Royal University in Calgary. For more on Lori, visit https://lorihahnel.ca/ Todd Devonshire was born and raised in Big River, Saskatchewan. It is here he learned to love hockey, rock n roll and the TV show Jeopardy. Upon graduating from high school, he went to broadcasting school in Saskatoon. His first job was with CJVR Radio in Melfort, Saskatchewan. After leaving CJVR, the station went on to win all kinds of awards. Coincidence? We think not. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 2001 with degrees from the College of Education and Kinesiology (hmmm…is that the correct spelling?); however, there was a strong desire to teach overseas and travel. For over two years, Todd travelled the world making stops in England and Japan. The idea for his novel Rink Burgers came to him while riding the trains and subways in Tokyo. Eventually he returned home to Saskatchewan and finished the book. He has developed an interest in play writing. His first play, The Baby Boomers, was produced in 2012. He is currently finishing his second play and working on a second novel. Todd currently teaches at the Saskatoon Business College. For more on Todd, visit www.rinkburgers.com/ Theme music is Flax Flower Blue by Best Kept Secret Girlfriend. This podcast features Western Canadian authors reading from their novels, short fiction, poetry, memoirs, or non-fiction. It is created and hosted by Saskatchewan novelist Lisa Guenther. Reading West is open to featuring published authors from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. After 33 years as an IRS tax collector, Richard M. Schickel and two of his former IRS colleagues have written a tell-all book intended to help small business owners and others defend themselves from the harsh tactics of the IRS. What to Do When the IRS is After You is not a book the IRS wants you to read or to own. Why? Because it is brutally honest about the vindictive nature of the IRS, and what you can – and can’t – get away with once the IRS is on your case. Join host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart this week on Monday Morning Radio as he and Richard Schickel, head of RMS Consulting in Tuscon, undertake their own no-holds-barred audit of the IRS. Allison, Don, and Noah discuss three topics of incomparable importance, and end with an anecdote each about something in Israel that made them smile this week. Tax and shend We discuss the decision of the Israeli government to withhold half a billion shekels of Palestinian tax money. Is this just one of a bunch of clever strategies Israel can employ at will, or does it show that in international diplomacy we are plum out of ideas? Losing faith The Israel Democracy Institute's annual report shows that Israelis are losing faith in all their institutions, save the army. Why should this be? Why do Arab Israelis trust the police more than any other institution except the Supreme Court? Primary education The recent Likud primary produced a list of candidates some have hailed as a great improvement. We ask whether the parties that pick their Knesset candidates through democratic primaries produce better results than the parties run by autocrats.
