We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

Our next guest is a physician, deacon, family man, farmer, and he's currently running for Senate in Illinois. He's created a 100% free allergy and asthma clinic through his foundation, Strength to Love. He has a knack for identifying root causes of an issue, coming up with a potential solution, and scaling these methods to reach a larger group of people. Two issues that he's been successful with recently are gun violence and food insecurity. He's battling gun violence by implementing a bill that assists families with children who are victims of gun violence up to $10,000 with funeral and burial costs. As for food insecurity, we still have areas of the city that are food apartheids. His patients would share that it would be easier and cheaper to get fast food rather than make the trek to a grocery store to potentially find spoiled fruits and vegetables. So Dr. Dave bought a farm. He most recently donated 16 acres to food depositories across the midwest. He's currently running for the Senate seat in the 20th district which includes Portage Park, Belmont Cragin, Logan Square, Albany Park, Avondale, Lincoln Park, and Bucktown. Immigrants, Refugees, and The Church Questions Discussed: (1:41) To lay a foundation for our conversation today, share a little about your childhood. Where did you grow up? What was family life and faith life like? (4:25) Your family eventually immigrated to the United States. What brought your family here and what were those first few years as an immigrant like for you and your family? (12:21) What was it that caused you to leave Isalm for Christianity? (14:59) fYour book, The Stranger at Our Shore: How Immigrants and Refugees Strengthen the Church, is in large part your story, but it is also a call to Christians to reconsider the strangers at our shore or living next door and our call to discipleship. What are some of the problems you see in the Church today, regarding how we relate to immigrants and refugees? (28:04) This is not only your personal experience, but you founded and pastored a church in Albany Park, Chicago, IL which is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the U.S. for a decade. What were some of the challenges and successes of leading a diverse church? (38:50) All too often, as a member of the local church, I forget I am a missionary. I forget that a large portion of Scripture is the story of Israel living as refugees and immigrants. Why is it vital to care for the immigrant and refugee like we see them cared for in Scripture? SHOW NOTES cont. In our second episode, we focus again on the critically important topic of Public Education--this time with a distinctly different perspective. This episode features teen story-gatherer Kaylen Brandt in conversation with Chicago alderwoman Rossana Rodriguez, a teacher and community organizer by training. Running as a Democratic Socialist, she won her first political campaign in 2019, when she was elected to represent the city's 33rd Ward on the Chicago City Council. She was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where her father was a community organizer. Rodriguez studied and taught drama in Puerto Rico before government cut-backs sparked her move to Albany Park in Chicago, where she became a resident director at the Albany Park Theater Project. In this episode, Rodriguez shares a photograph she took when she was a teacher at Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School in Humboldt Park. The photo shows Koko, a Black trans woman in Rodriguez's integrated arts class, on a very good day. Koko is smiling as she shows off a sock puppet she made as part of the class. Content Warning: Anti-trans violence and transphobia. Our Stories, Our World is a collaboration that connects Chicago's Public Narrative, a longtime advocate for broader, more accurate and more authentic community representation in media, and A Picture's Worth, a nonprofit focused on strengths-based storytelling for community transformation. Our Stories, Our World combines audio stories and photography to create a series of youth-led, citizen-centered podcasts that add depth and context to stories about Public Narrative's three thematic pillars: public safety, public health and public education.Interviewer/Host: Kaylen BrandtMusic: MalciArtwork: Dan MacDonald StudiosAudio Producer: Samantha GattsekExecutive Producers: Mareva Lindo & Elissa YanceyThis podcast is brought to you by Public Narrative and A Picture's Worth.Resources and LinksOur Stories Our World podcast site: http://apicturesworth.org/publicnarrativeChicago Magazine profile of Rossana Rodriguez: https://www.chicagomag.com/chicago-magazine/march-2021/new-power-30/rossana-rodriguez/Albany Park Theater Project: https://aptpchicago.org/Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School: https://pachs-chicago.org/El Rescate: https://www.humboldtparkportal.org/directory/el-rescate/Resources and programs for LGBTQ+ individuals in Chicago: https://www.bravespacealliance.org/Public Narrative: http://publicnarrative.orgA Picture's Worth: http://apicturesworth.org
