Lee is back with part one of a two-part look at the soundtracks and scores of sex comedies, specifically those of the 1970s and 1980s, the raunchier the better! There was so much material to go through that he had to split each decade into its own super-sized episode of BotT, and even then he's barely scraping the surface. In part one we start off in the decade where the sex comedy really started to take off overseas at first: the 1970s! This was especially obvious in places like Great Britain and Italy, and this trend would seemingly influence North American sex comedies to push the envelope even further later in the decade, before they totally came to dominate in the 1980s. --Up Pompeii from "Up Pompeii" (1970) --Frankie Howerd --God's Children & Lola from "Percy" (1971) --The Kinks --Au Pair Girls 2 from "Au Pair Girls" (1972) --Roger Webb --Sessomatto from "How Funny Can Sex Be" (1973) --Armando Trovajoli --Alvin Purple from "Alvin Purple" (1973) --Brian Cadd --Lovin' Is from "Alice Goodbody" (1974) --Rick Harris, Candy & Mr. D --This is Your Life Timmy Lea from "Confessions of a Window Cleaner" (1974) --Su Cheyenne --Girl from Starship Venus from "The Girl from Starship Venus" (1975) --Don Lang --Confessions of Timmy Lee from "Confessions of a Pop Performer" (1975) --Three's a Crowd --Kipper; Accidents Will Happen; Oh Sha La La & The Clapham from "Confessions of a Pop Performer" (1975) --Kipper (Dominic Bugatti & Frank Musker) --Theme from "The Ups and Downs of a Handyman" (1975) --Vic Elms (vocals by Barry Stokes) --Sq. 1 - Titoli & Seq. 3 from "The Sensuous Nurse" (1975) --Gianfranco Plenizio --My Cruisin' Casanova from "Adventures of a Taxi Driver" (1976) --Adrienne Posta --The Love Bug from "What's Up Nurse!" PART ONEScott and Paul talk about their friends at Pearl Snap Studios and pinch themselves over having the opportunity to talk with Elvis Costello.PART TWOElvis Costello discusses his new album Hey Clockface and talks about the record that set him on his musical journey; why he still likes writing in a notebook; the reason he resists the urge to go to an instrument too soon when he gets a melodic idea; the songwriting question he asked Bob Dylan; why he thinks he’s missed out on some cover songs; how he knows when a song is finished; the track on his new album that represents a songwriting “first” for him; his experiences in the studio with a gun-toting producer; and what he learned about the marriage of lyrics and melody from his co-writing relationships with Paul McCartney and Burt Bacharach. ABOUT ELVIS COSTELLOReleased between 1977 and 1979, Elvis Costello’s first three albums—My Aim is True, This Year’s Model, and Armed Forces—were all included in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. That early period of his recording career yielded now-classic singles such as “Alison,” “Watching the Detectives,” “Pump it Up,” “Radio Radio,” “Oliver’s Army,” “Accidents Will Happen,” and others.Though he established his career as a rock artist and reached commercial heights in the US with the pop hit “Everyday I Write the Book,” Costello’s more than thirty studio albums cover a breathtaking range of stylistic ground, from Almost Blue, his early 1980s album of country covers, to The Juliet Letters, his 1993 collaboration with The Brodsky Quartet, to North, an album of ballads partially inspired by his wife Diana Krall that topped Billboard’s Jazz chart in 2003, to Il Sogno, his first full-length orchestral work, which was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, and topped Billboard’s classical chart in 2004, to Wise Up Ghost, a 2013 collaboration with Questlove and The Roots. In between, he’s continued to release albums both solo and with his bands The Attractions, The Imposters, and The Sugarcanes. Always an adventurous collaborator, Costello entered into a fruitful songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney that yielded more than a dozen songs, including Costello’s Top 10 single “Veronica” and McCartney’s “My Brave Face.” He went on to release entire collaborative albums with Richard Harvey, Burt Bacharach, Allen Toussaint, and others. He has written lyrics for compositions by Charles Mingus, Billy Strayhorn and Oscar Peterson, as well as musical settings for lyrics by Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan. His songs have been covered by a range of artists including George Jones, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, and Solomon Burke. Costello has been nominated for fourteen Grammy awards, two of which he won, as well as an Academy Award for co-writing “The Scarlet Tide” with T-Bone Burnett for the film Cold Mountain. He has received two Ivor Novello awards for Songwriting, the Americana Association’s Lifetime Achievement in Songwriting award, and the ASCAP Founder’s Award, which was presented by Burt Bacharach. He was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and was named one of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine. His genre-stretching new album, Hey Clockface, was recorded in Helsinki and Paris, and was released on October 30.

That is the realest question of them all. Ashlee and Bre are back (woo!) and they are diving DEEP into "Accidents Will Happen" better known as the two-part abortion episode banned in America. Manny's got more than gymnastics on her mind, and it's enough to make her upchuck her decisions in the toilet, so she turns to the former teen mom queen, Spike, for some sage advice. Craig gets high on the idea of being a dad, because creating his own family sounds like a fun way to fix all of his problems! And sandwiched between that drama are two goofy-ass B-plots that made Ashley cringe and Bre laugh out loud. Hey Broomheads, #DEEEMP is back this week with an epic discussion about the infamous Manny abortion episode, which turns out to be not that infamous at all. Rather, it's a pretty nuanced and thoughtful look at the subject, and one of the series' best installments. Strap in though, Broomheads, 'cuz this is a long one.

In a special edition of Mastertapes to celebrate National Album Day, Elvis Costello, the consummate album artist talks to John Wilson and plays his way back through a career that has spanned five decades, premiers exclusive tracks from his new album and takes questions from the audience. From his critically acclaimed debut album, My Aim Is True, released in 1977 to his newly released Look Now, his first new album in five years, Elvis Costello has been widely recognised as one of Britain's best songwriters. From early classics like Watching The Detectives, Accidents Will Happen, and Almost Blue, all the way through to Jimmie Standing In The Rain, Unwanted Number and Under Lime his talent for wordplay has remained undimmed. He remains a composer who works across a range of styles, always mining a deep, rich seam of melodic and harmonic treasures - all of which is on display in these programmes recorded in the iconic BBC studios at Maida Vale. Accompanying him is his career-long collaborator, pianist Steve Nieve.

Red Time For Bonzo: A Marxist-Reaganist Film Podcast (Ronald Reagan Filmography)

Accidents Will Happen (1938) represents kind of a milestone in the young Gipper's career - his first chance to play a non-radio announcer/reporter. In classic Warners "ripped-from-the-headlines" style, the film tackles an Insurance Fraudster Scare that generated more than 400 New York Times headlines during the late 1930s.  Our panel discerns the lineaments of the future politician's crowd pleasing persona in the figure of Eric Gregg, intrepid accident claims detective, who is both the ultimate naif and the ultimate sharpie. Nothing gets by him! Except the fact this his wife hates his good corporate soldier/"I'll get a raise next year" act so much that she is willing to get creative about punishing him for failing to hold up his end of the patriarchal bargain.  During the 1940s, Reagan's unique Shark Scout qualities will serve him well in Popular Front leftist narratives like Juke Girl, and they will be turned to more sinister account during the 1980s we all hate so much, but here you'd be hard-pressed to ascribe any coherent politics to his actions. On the other hand, the film does make a brief detour into hard-edged class politics in its sensitive depiction of Red Time Hero Clinton Rosemond's plight. We also get a healthy dose of proto-feminist ire, thanks to Sheila Bromley's strong portrayal of a woman who probably makes the right choice between a life of domestic listlessness and a responsible position within a thriving criminal enterprise.  All this and Joan Blondell's sister, too! All in 60 minutes.     Now is a time for choosing. Choose RED TIME FOR BONZO! "Accidents Will Happen". On January 31, 1936, the Green Hornet radio program aired on WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan. Al Hodge played the part of the Green Hornet from 1936 through January of 1943. The program was created by George W. Trendle, the same man associated with the creation of the Lone Ranger radio show. The Green Hornet was that of a modern day Lone Ranger. The main character was Britt Reid, a newspaper publisher of the Daily Sentinel by day and the Green Hornet by night. Britt Reid was supposed to be the great-nephew of the Lone Ranger. Britt Reid's war against crime was an extension of his family history. The Green Hornet fought crime with his high-powered car, the Black Beauty. He also utilized a gun that fired knockout gas instead of bullets. His fists also came in handy on a regular basis. He was assisted by his Filipino valet, Kato. Kato would drive the Black Beauty, keep watch out for the police or the bad guys and sometimes lend a helping fist to the fighting. The Green Hornet pretended to be a villain while really battling the forces of crime in the big city. This would make for some interesting plot twists as the Green Hornet would be actively avoiding detection by the police while at the same time attempting to destroy criminal activity in the city. Many times the Green Hornet would lead the police to believe that the Green Hornet had been the mastermind of the case at hand. The police would receive an anonymous tip of where they could pick up the now subdued crooks with the Green Hornet just barely making his escape from the scene.
