You can't ask for much more from the first trial of the season after the Parramatta Eels piled on the points against the Newcastle Knights and escaped without any major injuries. Jason Ryles was left with plenty of food for thought following the victory and The Tip Sheet looks to add extra servings to his plate as Sixties and Forty20 breakdown the game. It was on for young and old as both established stars and fresh new faces impressed but the boys look at how the team played on a macro level in their initial dissection. What has changed under Ryles (and his new coaches) and how much powder was kept dry? Finally, the show runs through a comprehensive list of who caught the eye and it features plenty of young talent. What changed in the battle at fullback? Did the Eels unearth a true deputy to Mitchell Moses? Who dacked Zac Lomax? We have all the answer on The Tip Sheet!

Ah, the bizarre love/hate life of the New Order fan. What's your most loved and least favorite song on Low-Life?! For our fourth Request Episode Election, we went through dozens of listener suggestions to nominate Joe Jackson's Look Sharp, Jane's Addiction's Ritual de lo Habitual and this 1985 Manchester classic, which won in a landslide election. While half of us moaned about the album choice from our mystery nominators (MIA), we all had lots of great memories to share of adoring and rolling our eyes at NO. Superfan Sam hosted and held up lots of New Order vinyl, old tshirts were dusted off and Adam delivered an avalanche of guest rankers, starting with internationally-loved San Diego superstars Koi Division, who donned their iconic fish heads for a filmed interview. Days later, he visited Gold Diggers Sound in Los Angeles to chat with Dave Trumfio of the synth-lovin' Pulsars, whose lone 1997 debut/farewell album has finally recently been reissued. The two full interviews will be on our Youtube channel. Just you wait. In addition to getting tribute band opinions from San Francisco's Temptation and San Diego's Thieves Like Us (Substance responded too late to have their support for "Sunrise" be included), he got first hand accounts of 91X FM's infamous 1985 year-end countdown switcheroo from DJs Dwight Arnold, Pam Wolf and Billy Bones. Send us a textOn this week's episode, we jump into Joe Jackson's fantastic sophomore LP, 1979's I'm the Man.When Joe Jackson's hit the airwaves in fall of 1978, critics labeled him as one of the new "angry young men" on British music, the other two significant members of that group being Elvis Costello and Graham Parker. This was lyrically mature music that owed a debt to the early 70's UK Pub Rock scene, but played with the aggressive attitude of Punk.  Jackson's debut Look Sharp was released in January of 1979 and went top 40 in the UK and the US. After the success of Jackson's , many wondered what he would do as a follow up.  Thankfully, its more of the same.Released a mere 10 months later, I'm the Man didn't stray too far from the debut's formula, but to see it as simply Look Sharp Pt 2 does the album a significant disservice.  This time, Jackson and his amazing band ups the energy on the simple instrumentation and well-crafted melodies he introduced on Look Sharp. The band is tight, the songs are crisp, and the music immediate resulting in an album that full of accessible pop tunes, clever and sardonic lyrics, and post-punk aggression. It's never been easier to call 512-766-8495Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

Graham Maby is one of rock's most revered bassists, known especially for his work with Joe Jackson. Maby and Jackson were in another band together in England before Jackson proposed forming his own band with Maby's bass front and center. That was the approach of Jackson's first three albums—starting with 1979's Look Sharp!—and the ever-gracious Maby reflects on how his indelible parts came to be. He also recalls the breakup of the Joe Jackson Band, his continued work with Jackson on albums such as Night and Day and Body and Soul, and what prompted him to join previous Caropop guest Marshall Crenshaw's band. How did Crenshaw's approach to bass parts differ from Jackson's? How did Maby wind up back in the Jackson fold? And when will they record and perform together next?

What the Riff?!?
1979 - February: “Saturday Night Fever” Soundtrack

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 26, 2024 41:17

OK, it isn't rock music, but the Soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" was a tremendously successful album both commercially and critically, and it had a major impact in popular culture of the later 70's.  The theatrical release of the movie actually went back to December of 1977, but it was the winner of the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in February 1979, one of only three soundtrack albums to do so.  Composed by the Bee Gees and prominently featuring that band, this soundtrack is the second-best selling of all time behind "The Bodyguard."  The Bee Gees actually didn't get involved with the film until it was in post-production.  John Travolta was dancing to Stevie Wonder and Boz Scaggs when the scenes were filmed.  Columbia Records refused legal clearance for Scaggs material because they were pursuing another disco movie at the time, and the Bee Gees were commissioned to write the songs for the film.  The brothers Gibb wrote the songs primarily in a single weekend.  The resulting success would change the trajectory of both the Bee Gees and actor John Travolta.  The Bee Gees would become a group often compared to the Beatles in the late 70's.  Travolta, already well known for his role in the television series "Welcome Back, Kotter," would become an A-list celebrity and a household name.In 2013 the album was added to the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress for preservation.Lynch is responsible for this travesty, as the other participants do so under protest.  Support your local rock band, folks! Night FeverThis song was originally called "Saturday Night," but Robin Gibb was concerned about that name because of the number of songs already bearing the name.  "Night Fever" was inspired by Percy Faith's "Theme from 'A Summer Place'", and it spent 8 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts. How Deep Is Your LoveThis pop ballad was released in September of 1977, ahead of the movie.  It had hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 by Christmas Day of 1977, remained there for 3 weeks, and spent 17 total weeks in the top 10.  Barry Gibb has commented that this is his favorite Bee Gees song.  It won Best Pop Performance by a Group at the February 1978 Grammy awards. You Should Be DancingPrior to their involvement with the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack, the Bee Gees first released this track on their album "Children of the World" in 1976.  This is the song playing when Travolta takes over the disco dance floor. Jive Talkin'Here is another song that had been previously issued before the soundtrack was released.  The lead single from the album "Main Course" was released in May 1975, long before "Saturday Night Fever."  The song was originally called "Drive Talking," and the rhythm was inspired by the sound the band's car made crossing the Julia Tuttle Causeway as they traveled to the studio in Miami. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Dancing Queen by ABBAA mockumentary called "ABBA:  The Movie" was in the theatres at this time in the U.S. STAFF PICKS:Is She Really Going Out with Him by Joe JacksonWayne gets the staff picks going with a song that asks why good looking women date horrible men.  Joe Jackson is often confused with Elvis Costello, another artist releasing albums at the time.  This is Jackson's debut single from his debut album, "Look Sharp."The Gambler by Kenny RogersBruce brings us Kenny Roger's signature song.  Songwriter Don Schlitz wrote this song in 1976 and it was recorded by several musicians including Johnny Cash before Rogers took it to number 1 on the country charts and number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The gambler looks through life through the lens of poker, knowing "every hand's a winner, and every hand's a loser," and of course "you've got to know then to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em."Stumblin' In by Chris Norman and Suzi QuatroRob's staff pick is the sole top 40 hit by female rock pioneer Suzi Quatro, and Norman's only hit outside of his previous band, Smokie.  This duet made it to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Both singers have a smoky vocal sound.Do You Think I'm Sexy? by Rod StewartLynch notes Stewart's ability to surf the waves of popularity with this staff pick.  While Rod Stewart honed his craft in the rock genre, he achieved both popularity and notoriety with his polarizing choice of embracing disco music in the late 70's.  Today this song remains one of his most popular tunes. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Pegasus by The Allman Brothers BandThe Allman Brothers were decidedly NOT a disco band in this instrumental jam. Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Mike Long. Mike is a (very) occasional writer for National Review and was one of the originals back in the early 2000s as NRO was launched. He's the author of the non-fiction bestseller The Molecule of More and its sequel coming in fall of 2024.Mike's Music Pick: Joe JacksonAfter running through Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe/Rockpile, it was only a matter of time before we got to covering Joe Jackson. As an artist, Jackson frequently is grouped into the "angry young man"/Pub Rock category with the aforementioned artists. However, as we discuss on the show, there's an incredible depth to his songwriting and arrangements that quickly busted him out of whatever box critics might put him in.Jackson came out of the gate hot, with two releases in the magical year of 1979, Look Sharp! and I'm the Man. They could be parts one and two of the same album. These are the ones that lump him into the Costello/Parker/Lowe movement but it's a sound he rarely returns to again. Every single song is a winner. From here would come some of his best known songs – “I'm the Man,” “It's Different For Girls, and “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” By 1981, he took a massive detour from the rock/pop world with Jumpin' Jive, a collection of covers of 1940s swing and big band songs originally performed by Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway. Night and Day was released the same year as Elvis Costello's Imperial Bedroom and it, too, is a bid to be taken very seriously as a songwriter. Like Elvis's effort, it's a complete success artistically and even moreso commercially. "Steppin' Out" earned Grammy Award nominations and reached number six on the charts. "Breaking Us in Two" reached number 18. It's a cosmopolitan, big-city record. The rest of the 1980s would find Jackson stretching his wings and dabbling in jazz, Latin rhythms, classical – if you name a genre, he probably has a song in it (OK, perhaps not metal). Albums like Body and Soul, Big World, Blaze of Glory, and Laughter and Lust didn't sell nearly as well as previous efforts but kept fans happy. After 1991, however, he wouldn'trelease another non-classical studio album until 2000's Night and Day II. Why? Take it from the artist himself: "After the Laughter & Lust world tour … I had real bad writer's block. I couldn't even listen to music. I just lost it, totally. It was awful."But it wouldn't stay that way! Beginning in 2003 with Vol. 4, Jackson would release a string of records that showed he still know how to write a song. By the way, all of us have musical blind spots, and Joe Jackson was one for Jeff. Come along for the ride as he discovers the many layers of this talented performer and writer.

Interview with Glen Phillips of TOAD The Wet Sprocket

Bringin' it Backwards

We had the pleasure of interviewing Glen Phillips of Toad The We Sprocket from The Twisted Wool Lounge at the historic Woolworth Theatre in Nashville! During his years as lead singer and main songwriter of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Glen Phillips helped to create the band's elegant folk/pop sound with honest, introspective lyrics that forged a close bond with their fans. When Toad went on hiatus, he launched a solo career with Abulum, and stayed busy collaborating with other artists on various projects including Mutual Admiration Society, with members of Nickel Creek and Remote Tree Children, an experimental outing with John Morgan Askew. Phillips' previous solo record, Swallowed by the New, was a post-divorce outing about grief, while There Is So Much Here finds Phillips writing love songs again focusing on gratitude, beauty and staying present. “Looking at this batch of songs, I realized I'd turned a corner. I noticed that I was in a state of being that wasn't all about loss. Things felt doable and hopeful again. There's no pure happy ending - the world is a mess, the future is uncertain - but I started to internalize poet Mary Oliver's words: ‘Attention is the beginning of devotion.' I'm paying better attention. I'm getting more devoted.” The 11 tracks on the album move between quiet love songs and outright rockers that consider the multi-faceted meanings hidden in our everyday lives. “Stone Throat” is a midtempo rocker that looks at a couple in a new relationship, trying to find the balance between desire and responsibility, or as Phillips sings, “trying to find the balance, between the sacred and the street.” There's a hint of new wave ska in the rhythm of “I Was a Riot,” a song that casts a compassionate eye on the end of a relationship. “The arrangement nods to Joe Jackson's Look Sharp,” Phillips says. “Graham Maby is one of the greatest bass players of all time, so we had him in mind when laying down the bass part.”  The COVID lockdown-inspired “The Sound of Drinking,” is an appreciation of the familiar things in life, like drinking a glass of water on your back porch. Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek) plays soft acoustic guitar and Glen sighs a lyric of gratitude for simple pleasures. “Call The Moondust” is the most metaphysical song in the set. There's a dash of secular gospel in Depper's piano, and ambient effects that suggest the vastness of the cosmos. Phillips delivers an emotional performance over a tense arrangement that hints at the wonders of the universe. “The beauty of life is in its mystery,” Phillips states. “If we think we have an answer, we're deluding ourselves. My dad was a physicist and was reading about string theory on his death bed. He found God in all those extra folded dimensions, and left this world with a sense of wonder. I hope I can do the same.” Ultimately, as Phillips reflects on the album, he shares: “This is an album about showing up for what is and letting it be enough.” We want to hear from you!
