Lee is back with the second part of his look at the soundtracks and scores of the sex comedy genre, focusing on the more lurid side of things. This time everything has gotten far bigger and far hornier as he moves into the 1980s. Much like with slasher films, and other assorted cinematic junk food, the sex comedy genre exploded in North America during this decade, getting far raunchier and problematic that it had previously been. Because of the exponentially larger amount of music to put on the playlist, Lee put out a poll to the listeners asking them if they wanted this split into two parts or if they wanted a super-sized summer blow-out. Apparently the listeners are all size queens, so enjoy this 3hr episode! --Pinball Summer & Voyeur's Motel from "Pinball Summer" (1980) --Jay Boivin & Germain Gauthier --I Don't Need To Love You & Try Not To Break My Heart from "The Beach Girls" (1982) --Linda Stevens-Foote --Better Luck Next Time from "The Last American Virgin" (1982) --Oingo Boingo --Shake it Up from "The Last American Virgin" (1982) --The Cars --Teen Angel Eyes from "The Last American Virgin" (1982) --Tommy Tutone --Girls Like Me from "Valley Girl" (1983) --Bonnie Hayes --Marina Men from "Valley Girl" (1983) --The Valley Girls --Pocket Pool from "Valley Girl" (1983) --Killer Pussy --Angst in My Pants from "Valley Girl" (1983) --Sparks --Shake that Thing & This Heart's On Fire from "Screwballs" (1983) --Johnny Dee Fury --Joysticks from "Joysticks" (1983) --Legion --My Tutor from "My Tutor" (1983) --Webster Lewis --Sleepover from "The First Turn-On!"
Lee is back with part one of a two-part look at the soundtracks and scores of sex comedies, specifically those of the 1970s and 1980s, the raunchier the better! There was so much material to go through that he had to split each decade into its own super-sized episode of BotT, and even then he's barely scraping the surface. In part one we start off in the decade where the sex comedy really started to take off overseas at first: the 1970s! This was especially obvious in places like Great Britain and Italy, and this trend would seemingly influence North American sex comedies to push the envelope even further later in the decade, before they totally came to dominate in the 1980s. --Up Pompeii from "Up Pompeii" (1970) --Frankie Howerd --God's Children & Lola from "Percy" (1971) --The Kinks --Au Pair Girls 2 from "Au Pair Girls" (1972) --Roger Webb --Sessomatto from "How Funny Can Sex Be" (1973) --Armando Trovajoli --Alvin Purple from "Alvin Purple" (1973) --Brian Cadd --Lovin' Is from "Alice Goodbody" (1974) --Rick Harris, Candy & Mr. D --This is Your Life Timmy Lea from "Confessions of a Window Cleaner" (1974) --Su Cheyenne --Girl from Starship Venus from "The Girl from Starship Venus" (1975) --Don Lang --Confessions of Timmy Lee from "Confessions of a Pop Performer" (1975) --Three's a Crowd --Kipper; Accidents Will Happen; Oh Sha La La & The Clapham from "Confessions of a Pop Performer" (1975) --Kipper (Dominic Bugatti & Frank Musker) --Theme from "The Ups and Downs of a Handyman" (1975) --Vic Elms (vocals by Barry Stokes) --Sq. 1 - Titoli & Seq. 3 from "The Sensuous Nurse" (1975) --Gianfranco Plenizio --My Cruisin' Casanova from "Adventures of a Taxi Driver" (1976) --Adrienne Posta --The Love Bug from "What's Up Nurse!" What is the role of music in cinema and why it is such an important part of the storytelling process? How does music increase our capacity for empathy and wonder?Fabrizio Mancinelli is an Italian-American composer, songwriter, and conductor, best known for his musical contributions to the world of cinema. As a songwriter, he has created original scores for The Land of Dreams,The Snow Queen 3, The Boat, and the upcoming animated drama Mushka, among others. In 2017, he led the orchestral recording for the Academy Award-winning Green Book, and he recently scored the documentary Food 2050, which premiered at the UN Climate Change Conference in 2022."And here I have to recall a conversation I had with one of my mentors, Luis Bacalov, who won the Oscar for the movie Il Postino, one of the biggest film composers of the 20th century and a great music arranger. He told me that he always has music in his brain, and I always had music in my brain as well. It's always there in the background. I would be concerned if there was no music for one day or even for one minute. Silence is a different kind of sound for me in the difference when I write music. Silence, a rest, is as important as a note because it prepares us for something else. It's part of the music. There is a difference between relative silence, which I put in the music, and absolute silence, which I fear."https://fabriziomancinelli.uswww.instagram.com/fabmancinelliwww.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.org IG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast
Lee is back with his second part of his look at his favourite selections from the soundtracks and scores for the filmography of Quentin Tarantino, this time covering "Death Proof" to "Once Upon a Time in America". As Tarantino went forward his soundtracks got larger and larger, so this ended up being an even bigger episode than part one, even with Lee trying his best to restrain himself with his picks. Regardless of if you like the work of Quentin Tarantino or not, it can not be denied that he curates killer soundtracks for his films. Much like how he borrows visually and thematically from the films of the past to create his own unique film architecture, he often layers in music from other films in other to do much the same. Sometimes the music is there just to accent a scene and make it cooler, sometimes it's a deeper meta reference. Sometimes it just doesn't work at all, but nobody always hits the target all the time. With the announcement that Tarantino is working on his (according to him) tenth and final film, "The Movie Critic", Lee decided it was time to look back at his body of work as it stands right now, and choose the tracks from his filmography that he loves best. Because there's so much to dig into, this will be part one of a two part series of super-sized episodes.
Sometimes the cinematic vanity project (a film that is usually some combo of a single person writing, directing, producing and acting in a film) can be an artistic vision that's a masterpiece that stands the test of time. A good example would be Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane". Most times, however, vanity projects are created by total outsiders who have the money but no talent, but their drive and their delusions push the project through, for better or for worse. This time out Lee has put together a playlist covering some notable, and in some cases just unknown, vanity projects. This will no doubt be a thread picked up in future episodes, as there's a ton of these to cover. --World's Greatest Sinner from "The World's Greatest Sinner" (1962) --Frank Zappa --Come on Feet from "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" (1971) --Melvin Van Peebles --Schlock Boogie from "Schlock" (1973) -- Ian Kranitz & Albin Konopka --Rage from "Stone" (1974) --Billy Green --I'll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time & Open Your Heart from "Massacre Mafia Style" (1974) --Duke Mitchell --Enuff is Enuff from "One Down, Two to Go" (1982) --Rodney Franklin --To Survive; Girl Crazy & Take it Off from "The Life and Loves of a Male Stripper" (1987) --Rafael Bethencort --Shimmy Slide from "Champagne and Bullets" (1993) --John De Hart --The Ninja from "New York Ninja" (2021) --Voyag3r Opening and closing music: Summertime Killer from "Summertime Killer" by Luis Bacalov, and Santa Maria from "Raiders of Atlantis" by Oliver Onions.
Lee has finally dipped back into the world of rejected film scores. Due to popular demand, he's also included short snippets of the scores that were actually used in the finished film before each selection. Sit back and listen to what could have been, and maybe learn a little bit about why things didn't quite pan out the way they could have. --Suite from "Night and the City" (1950) --Benjamin Frankel --Suite from "Night and the City" (1950) --Franz Waxman --Main Title from "Forbidden Planet" (1956) --David Rose --The Mountain from "The Bible" (1966) --Ennio Morricone --Main Title from "Frenzy" (1972) --Henry Mancini --Alien Landing, Out Back & The Vial from "Alien Nation" (1988) --Jerry Goldsmith Opening and closing music: Summertime Killer from "Summertime Killer" by Luis Bacalov, and Santa Maria from "Raiders of Atlantis" by Oliver Onions.

He introduces music by Ilan Eshkeri, Rachel Portman, Luis Bacalov, George Fenton, and John Ottman among others, and he talks to Bryce Dressner about his new score for 'Cyrano'. Massimo Troisi had a driving passion to make The Postman, so much so that he put medical care off to get it made. This lead to his death immediately after principal photography, but his passion project was able to be seen by the world. But would it have the success story it has if it wasn't for the Miramax marketing machine? Hard to say, but we don't think so, despite it being an absolutely adorable film. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Foreign Language Films Nominated for Best Picture series with Michael Radford's 1994 film The Postman (Il Postino). We talk about the nature of foreign language films being left out of the Best Picture race from the early 70s to the mid 90s and why that may have been. We also talk about the nature of the Best Picture award and what a film should have intrinsically to get that nomination, but how marketing efforts really led to shifts there. We discuss Troisi's passion for this film and how it pushed him to get it made, regardless of his health. We look at the nature of a biographical story and why including Pablo Neruda in this film doesn't make it biographical. We chat about the power of Neruda's poetry and why it works so well in this film. We touch on Radford as a director and Luis Bacalov's incredible score. And we look at other films that were left out of the Best Picture race. It's a beautiful and heartwarming film. Maybe not Best Picture material, but certainly something that warmed both our hearts. We had a great time talking about it so check it out then tune in to this week's show! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. Even if someone has never watched an Italian Western, there's at least a good chance they've heard the soundtrack or score from one. While Lee has featured some tracks from Italian Westerns before on the show, he's never done a dedicated look at the genre. This will be part one of three shows attempting to cover the scope of music that came from the Italian Westerns. Episode one is focused on selections that have vocalists on the tracks singing a song of some sort (note: the typical chorus of unintelligible chanting found on many Italian Western scores does not count in this case). As mentioned before, in some cases, you'll encounter a track that has been featured on a previous episode, but the majority of these shows will be featuring new material. Also, although he states on the episode that he was trying to keep this episode within the usual confines of an hour runtime, he quickly discovered the folly of that, as there is too much great music to play. Expect all of the episodes in this series to be as long as they have to be. --A Gringo Like Me from "Gunfight at Red Sands" (1963) --Ennio Morricone w/Peter Tevis --The Return of Ringo from "The Return of Ringo" (1965) --Ennio Morricone w/Maurizio Graf --A Lone and Angry Man from "A Coffin for the Sheriff" (1965) --Francesco De Masi w/Peter Tevis --Ya Me Voy from "A Bullet for the General" (1966) --Luis Bacalov w/Ramon Mereles --Texas, Adios from "Texas, Adios" (1966) --Anton Garcia Abril w/Don Powell --Django from "Django" (1966) --Luis Bacalov w/Rocky Roberts --For a Gunshot from "Little Rita of the West" (1967) --Roberto Gigli w/Rita Pavone--Who Is The Man? from "A Taste of Death" (1968) --Francesco De Masi; Alessandro Alessandroni & Giulia De Mutiis w/Raoul Lovecchio --Just A Coward from "And Now... Lee and Daniel are back to cover two crime movies featuring the vocal, acting, and visual talents of Ann-Margret: one unfairly-judged, in 1964's "Kitten With a Whip", and one almost totally lost to time in 1969's "Rebus". Also covered: what the hosts have watched as of late; listener comments; and they do get into a short rant about female models and sex workers, who were often used in many of the films of this era, dropped, and then forgotten about. In this installment of the podcast's Spaghetti Western series, Daniel and Paul each have a separate conversation with Lee about three non-Leone Lee Van Cleef outings. Covered in this episode are "Death Rides a Horse" (1967); "Sabata" (1969); and "The Grand Duel" (1972). Besides just going on about what a badass Van Cleef is in these films, common tropes and themes between the three films are talked about, and the general trends of the twilight years of the genre. A lot is talked about and there's a bit more music than usual, so this is a long one. Strap yourselves in, kids. The whole gang is back together to kick-off the podcast's first look at Spaghetti westerns by talking about what is, perhaps, the second most well-known character of the genre, after Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name. Yes, on tap is Sergio Corbucci's "Django" (1966). The only true sequel, "Django Strikes Again" (1987), is also briefly talked about, and Lee gives some suggestions on which of the thirty or so unofficial sequels are worth checking out. After an opening where Jack and Andrew go between talking about Django Unchained (starting 3:54) and its depiction of slavery and the new rules imposed by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on voting for movies (because those two topics have so much in common), there's informal talk about movies recently seen. Please note that the SPOILER discussion of THE BOY begin at 52:37 into the recording (and ends at 56:30). Andrew also asks a question that has haunted civilization for years; what does 'Camp' mean in movies? Movies discussed include: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975) BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER (2000) DJANGO UNCHAINED (2012) DJANGO (1966) FANTASTIC FOUR (2015) THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (2015) THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA (2014) WORLD OF TOMORROW (2015) THE BOY (2016) THE FOREST (2016) The PARADISE LOST Trilogy (1996-2011) 'Django' by Luis Bacalov
This week in part four of our Italian horror series Lee talks with Daniel and Paul in separate conversations about Luigi Cozzi's 1980 gory sci-fi horror "Contamination" and then they end up having A LOT to say about the late schlock-meister Bruno Mattei's 1980 "Dawn"/"Zombi" rip-off "Hell of the Living Dead". Lee and Daniel also cover what they've watched in the last little while. This may very well be the longest anyone has talked about these two films on a podcast, so if you're into wasting two hours of your life, this might be the episode for you. Featured music: "Zombi" by Goblin, & "Hell of the Living Dead (Main Theme)" by Luis Bacalov. Pex Lives coverage of Amicus Films.

In this Spaghetti Western special, Desmond and Darryll take a look at two very different films in the Django legacy: the original badass Django on Blu-ray, and the bizarre and puzzling Takashi Miike film Sukiyaki Western Django. Trust me, this one's fun. Of course, suitable songs are played as always: "Django" by Luis Bacalov, "Django" by Rancid, "Japanese Cowboy" by Ween, and "Carry the Coffin" by Ghoultown. So go ahead, draw first. I dare you! Send feedback to: feedback@dreadmedia.net, or 206.203.1213.
