#elviscostello #lindaronstadt #bozscaggs #bonnieraitt #nicklowe Austin de Lone is an American keyboardist who records and tours with his own bands as well as with other artists, such as Bill Kirchen, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs, Nick Lowe, Commander Cody, and Loudon Wainwright. De Lone grew up in suburban Philadelphia, taking piano lessons at age 12. His early influences included Ray Charles and George Shearing. After stints as a student at the New England Conservatory of Music, Harvard University, and University of California, Berkeley, he moved to Greenwich Village.[3] While at Harvard, de Lone composed the song "One for One," which was the first single released by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys. Eggs over Easy In 1969, de Lone formed the band Eggs over Easy with Jack O'Hara and Brien Hopkins.[4] In 1970, Chas Chandler persuaded the band to record in London, but those recordings were not released. A four-night-a-week residency at a pub called the Tally-Ho in Kentish Town lasted more than a year. Eggs over Easy played a blend of blues, country, and rock that became known as pub rock. Regular attendees of their shows included members of Brinsley Schwarz and BBC disc jockey John Peel. In 1972, they returned to California and released their first album Good 'N' Cheap produced by Link Wray. The Moonlighters De Lone moved to Marin, California in 1972, where he met Bill Kirchen, who had been performing with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. In the late 70s, de Lone joined Kirchen's side-project band, the Moonlighters. Their 1983 album Rush Hour was produced by Nick Lowe. Both de Lone and Kirchen later worked with Lowe and Elvis Costello. De Lone and Kirchen still record and perform together. In 2016, they released their duet album Transatlantica. The Christmas Jug Band De Lone is a member of the Christmas Jug Band, a collection of musicians who have been touring locally each holiday season since 1976, and releasing albums since 1987. The band has included musicians such as Dan Hicks, Tim Eschliman, Jim Rothermel, Lance Dickerson, Brien Hopkins, and Norton Buffalo. Richard de Lone Special Housing Project De Lone coordinates an annual fundraiser for eventual construction of the Richard de Lone Special Housing Project, a residential facility for people with Prader-Willi Syndrome, which de Lone's son Richard is afflicted with. As part of the 2007 event, Elvis Costello reunited with Clover, the band who backed him on his first album My Aim is True.

(Chorus) Blame it on Cain Please don't blame it on me It's nobody's fault, but it just seems to be his turn

On this special episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell and Plouffe have teamed up to pick two albums from Jamie's collection! Bell's pick is the Electric Light Orchestra's "A New World Record", their sixth, and perhaps most successful album, released in 1976. This album spawned four hit singles - Do Ya, Livin' Thing, Telephone Line, and Rockaria! and went to number one here in Canada. A fun record incorporating elements of orchestral accompaniment, the 70s rock sound and opera, critics enjoyed the nods to The Beatles, the juxtaposition between faster tracks and the more slow, haunting numbers and the sophistication of production. In comparison, Plouffe's pick, Elvis Costello's "My Aim is True", his first album, released in 1977, is sparse in production. In comparison to ELO's huge, sprawling sound and epic length to their songs, "My Aim is True" features many songs less than three minutes long, some shorter than two minutes. A mix of what might be called New Wave, Punk and Pub Rock, the album was a massive success. Despite being released only a year apart and both band being from the UK, the two albums sound almost nothing alike. What will the boys think of their picks from Jamie's collection? Will this be a rare episode where Vinyl Verdict is in complete agreement? Come along and find out!

Never Mind the Bullocks, Rocket to Russia, Animals, Low, My Aim is True, Heroes, Rumours and yes, Aja all came out in 1977 and Television's Marquee Moon might be the best of all of them. It's punk but atmospheric, arty but accessible, full of attitude but emotional, catchy but virtuosic. It's the masterpiece that hides in the shadows, sneaks up on you and then stays with you for the rest of your life. We find a variety of ways to express this sentiment over and over again for an hour and half. Enjoy! Con su álbum debut “My Aim is True”, Elvis Costello demostró que no era incompatible hacer música con actitud punk y al mismo tiempo plagarla de hermosas melodías.
You know the song 867-5309/Jenny is a ubiquitous icon of the 80's -- ranking number four on VH1's Hits of the 80's. Now let's hear the story of the song's writer: Alex Call On today's episode, we'll hear about his songwriting process for Jenny – and his live acoustic performance of 867-5309, plus three other hits that made the Billboard Hot 100 Power of Love and Perfect World, (written for Huey Lewis and the News) And Mr. Moon by Elvis Costello Alex Call has been a hit recording artist and songwriter for over thirty years. His muse is legendary in the industry, and his songs have become musical icons of American pop culture. I met Alex at a small café several years ago, and had the chance to record our conversation. He shared highlights of his career as told in his book, “867-5309: The Song That Saved Me.” I didn't know then that I'd have a podcast on the creative process, so I feel fortunate to have captured this story. Alex Call was lead singer in the San Francisco cult-fave Country-rock band Clover, along with Huey Lewis and John McFee, now lead guitarist, Doobie Brothers Clover was the band on Elvis Costello's first hit album, “My Aim is True.” In the introduction to the book, Elvis Costello says, “You've written a vivid, honest feeling memoir Alex and his Clover colleagues were once almost-mythical figures on a record sleeve to me. This book fills in the human story between those photographs and the guys I got to know at the very start of my career and those I am still happy to call my friends. Read this and you'll realize, music has been a passport, an occasional alibi and something to catch you when you fall.” Alex has been a recording artist for Arista Records, Mercury Records, and Fantasy Records. Let's listen to Alex start at the beginning of the story of what became “Jenny, Jenny”…. Including that famous guitar hook So, as Alex said, he felt he had all the pieces of a hit song. Here's how it came together…. All of the culminated in the song you can't get out of your head now -- 867-5309/Jenny recorded by Tommy Tutone This and his songs are featured in movies and TV, and have served as branding for numerous national ad campaigns. Finally, as promised, let's listen to acoustic coffee shop performances of 3 other songs from Alex Call Thanks for listening to this episode featuring Alex Call; his book is “867-5309: The Song That Saved Me.” and come back again next time for more creative inspiration. I'm Mark Stinson – and we're Unlocking your world of creativity.

Baxie takes a look at the 1977 debut album by Elvis Costello, "My Aim is True". It's the album that launched one of the most prolific careers in music. It's the latest selection from Baxie's Enormous Record Collection on Baxie's Musical Podcast
PART ONEScott and Paul talk about their friends at Pearl Snap Studios and pinch themselves over having the opportunity to talk with Elvis Costello.PART TWOElvis Costello discusses his new album Hey Clockface and talks about the record that set him on his musical journey; why he still likes writing in a notebook; the reason he resists the urge to go to an instrument too soon when he gets a melodic idea; the songwriting question he asked Bob Dylan; why he thinks he’s missed out on some cover songs; how he knows when a song is finished; the track on his new album that represents a songwriting “first” for him; his experiences in the studio with a gun-toting producer; and what he learned about the marriage of lyrics and melody from his co-writing relationships with Paul McCartney and Burt Bacharach. ABOUT ELVIS COSTELLOReleased between 1977 and 1979, Elvis Costello’s first three albums—My Aim is True, This Year’s Model, and Armed Forces—were all included in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. That early period of his recording career yielded now-classic singles such as “Alison,” “Watching the Detectives,” “Pump it Up,” “Radio Radio,” “Oliver’s Army,” “Accidents Will Happen,” and others.Though he established his career as a rock artist and reached commercial heights in the US with the pop hit “Everyday I Write the Book,” Costello’s more than thirty studio albums cover a breathtaking range of stylistic ground, from Almost Blue, his early 1980s album of country covers, to The Juliet Letters, his 1993 collaboration with The Brodsky Quartet, to North, an album of ballads partially inspired by his wife Diana Krall that topped Billboard’s Jazz chart in 2003, to Il Sogno, his first full-length orchestral work, which was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, and topped Billboard’s classical chart in 2004, to Wise Up Ghost, a 2013 collaboration with Questlove and The Roots. In between, he’s continued to release albums both solo and with his bands The Attractions, The Imposters, and The Sugarcanes. Always an adventurous collaborator, Costello entered into a fruitful songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney that yielded more than a dozen songs, including Costello’s Top 10 single “Veronica” and McCartney’s “My Brave Face.” He went on to release entire collaborative albums with Richard Harvey, Burt Bacharach, Allen Toussaint, and others. He has written lyrics for compositions by Charles Mingus, Billy Strayhorn and Oscar Peterson, as well as musical settings for lyrics by Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan. His songs have been covered by a range of artists including George Jones, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, and Solomon Burke. Costello has been nominated for fourteen Grammy awards, two of which he won, as well as an Academy Award for co-writing “The Scarlet Tide” with T-Bone Burnett for the film Cold Mountain. With a positive COVID-19 test almost two and half weeks post symptoms, good friend and return guest Eli Harrison explains what exactly went down roughly a month ago when this virus first shook the world. While the news cycle went wild with any bit of information they could get their hands on, Eli and the rest of the Dungey Boys were under a direct investigation by the CDC, to get any information they could from a diagnosis that did not fit the mold for what they had been previously reporting on. Along with all of this, we talk frustrations with testing, symptoms of the virus, what the testing is like, different people with different situations, social media virtue signaling and how Eli has to cook again. Fun episode recorded on ZOOM so sorry for any issues with audio, Im trying my best to figure it out and keep this bad boy rolling. You only asked me why. I never thought that so much trouble was restin' on my reply, I could say it was the nights when I was lonely and you were the only one who'd talk. I could tell you that I like your sensitivity, when you know it's the way that you walk. Why do you have to say that there's always someone who can do it better than I can? But don't you think that I know that walking on the water won't make me a miracle man? Baby's gotta have the things she wants. You know she's gotta have the things she loves. She's got a ten-inch bamboo cigarette holder and her black patent leather gloves. And I'm doing everything just tryin' to please her, even crawling around on all fours. Oh, I thought by now that it was gonna be easy, but she still seems to want for more. (chorus) I hear they're givin' you a bad reputation just because you've never been denied. You try to say you've done it all before. Baby, you know that you just get tired. But everybody loves you so much, girl. I just don't know how you stand the strain. Oh, I, I'm the one who's here tonight, and I don't wanna do it all in vain.

In the sixth episode of the ALL NEW Anhedonic Headphones Podcast, Kevin interviews his co-worker, David Frost, or commonly known to almost everyone as, simply, Frost. Originally from Tennessee, Frost, like many people at the co-op, has lived a hundred lives before this one. He’s worked a number of interesting jobs, has played in a number of bands before moving to Minnesota, and as expected, has a delightfully eclectic taste in music, some of which comes out in the songs he decided to converse about on the show. Click here for more information about the AWARD WINNING music site, Anhedonic Headphones. Episode 6 credits: The intro to the episode featured an instrumental version of "Labels," performed by GZA/Genius, taken from the 2012 Get On Down/Geffen/Universal Music Special Markets release Liquid Swords - The Chess Box (Instrumentals.) The song originally appears on the 1995 Geffen Records release Liquid Swords. The theme music is a YouTube rip of the intro to BET's "Rap City: The Bassment," airing from 1999 to 2005. In this episode, we discussed: “Drain You,” performed by Nirvana, taken from the 1991 Geffen Records release Nevermind. “Halloween,” performed by The Dead Kennedys, taken from the 1982 Alternative Tentacles release Plastic Surgery Disaster. “Cheap Reward” performed by Elvis Costello, taken from the 1992 Rykodisc re-issue of My Aim is True. “Everybody Hurts,” performed by R.E.M., taken from the 1992 Warner Brothers Records release Automatic For The People. “Booty Swing,” performed by Parov Stelar, taken from the 2010 Estage Noir Recordings release The Paris Swing Box EP. Please note the music played on the Anhedonic Headphones is used with the intent for discussion and promotional purposes only. Please do not sue me because someone wanted to talk about your song on the show. Thank you for understanding.
