Wayne Shorter has long been considered one of the greatest modern composers and musicians of American music. His career reads like a Who's Who of the genre, starting with Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, then the Miles Davis Quintet, followed by solo fame and the founding of fusion super group Weather Report. His collaborations extend beyond jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter to include Carlos Santana, Joni Mitchel, Milton Nascimento and Steely Dan, just to name a few.  In Wayne Shorter: Zero Gravity, acclaimed producer and director Dorsay Alavi moves beyond typical music doc territory to capture the essence of the man who touched so many lives, including her own. As Shorter's long-time friend and music-video collaborator, Dorsay paints an intimate portrait and cinematic ode to a truly American visionary, innovator and icon.  Wayne Shorter: Zero Gravity is a three-part docu-series streaming on Amazon Prime from August 25th 2023, which would have been Shorter's 90th birthday.  Watch the episode at https://factualamerica.com "There's so many layers to Wayne, but I would say mostly, he's a very, very principled person. And I believe that he has always been very authentic and true to what he has always done on an artistic level, [and] in life as well." - Dorsay Alavi

A acusação? Tráfico de drogas. A droga?

I know you're going to love today's show. As I said, I was unfamiliar with Hannah but I've been getting up to speed. And you should, too, because Hannah's music is also unexpected. Her songs can be delicate and achingly familiar. She''ll paint impressionistic music with swathes of sound but will also delight you with covers of pop songs from the ‘80s performed on music boxes. I catch myself singing Soft Cell's “Tainted Love” constantly thanks to Hannah. Join us again next week when our guest deejay will be Jonathan Ammons. Usually I've got a good description of the people on the podcast. I can scribble something witty, poetic, elegant and the guest (typically) won't do a better job. Not in the case of Jem, who goes by the moniker of Rookling. Jem is such a poet, such a storyteller, his way written expression goes beyond anything this aging 31-year-old writer can muster. Having moved to Berlin in 2018, Jem has already gained quite the popularity and following in the local music scene. With a wonderful Joni Mitchel, Fleet Foxes, Leonard Cohen inspired blend of folk-rock tales, Jem is becoming quite the sought after talent. And despite the heavy lyrics, mature reflections and somewhat old-timer tales, he's only 23. (Age is only a number of course, but christ.) In this episode, Jem and I talk folk inspiration, keeping in touch with fans through tender letters, and what we won't miss about the music industry once things establish some kind of normal. (And to prove a point about storytelling and how good Jem is at it, I'm going to post his bio below as he wrote it. You'll agree it's much, much better than mine.) In the autumn of ’18, Rookling swapped the spires and hills of England for the Berlin underground. He stepped off the plane with a guitar, a suitcase, and a dream: to share his music with the world. The city sent him reeling. He escaped into his songbook and the solace of storytelling, evoking love, death, and landscapes strange and dear. All the while, the hearth-fire warmth of Fleet Foxes and Nick Drake were helping mould his harmonies. Each Rookling song blends the solemnity of an altar with the urgency of a church bell. The influence of the greats is unmistakeable: he channels the uncommon poetry of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, adding a more archaic thrill of his own. At a tender twenty-three, Rookling is a folk-prophet in the making.

Sounds Like Liberty

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine the Joni Mitchel classic, later re-popularized by Counting Crows, Big Yellow Taxi. Nick you may or may not know is a big fan of nature and listening to an economic illiterate try and throw shade at the wrong places may have gotten under his bonnet. This week in I Heard This Happened: some progressive instrumental rock with a dire message, a creative saxophone jazz offering and a bonus pop-punk offering from a previous feature. Nicky’s album this week is Fire By The Silos by Toska. If you’re a fan of progressive music and you aren’t on bandcamp at least weekly, you are doing life wrong. This is yet another killer find of mostly instrumental prog-rock. The title track which is the only track with lyric, can easily be taken as a support of a libertarian worldview paints a get-wrenching portrait of how central planning can destroy individuals, not just nations. Lizzie Brings us Becoming by Mammal Hands. After a difficult time finding an album to get into this week, Nicky threw her some of his scraps and she found something she could get behind. This album is a 3-song EP by a piano, sax, drums trio performing some form of improvisational jazz with some other more modern stylistic influences. Definitely an edventure and keeps the morose feel Lizzie so often likes. As a bonus we mention Strings by Scott Sellers. I’m not sure how he cranked another out so fast but he builds on his previous offering and brings us a slightly more modern sound thats equal parts No Use For A Name  and Four Year Strong. This week’s interview is with Jack V Lloyd of The Voluntaryist Comic and other various web sources. This is not the interview Nick had planned in many ways but was literally world shaping in others. The mix is an hour of soothing deepness, that will most definitely get you in the mood for Andre's Leeds appearance when he comes to play for us in January and make his city debut. ENJOY! **INTERVIEW WITH ANDRE LODEMANN** BSU > Hi Andre, how are you? I am ready for a holiday as I had a lot of work to do both creative and administrative preparing my album "Fragments" on Best Works Records which is to be released in may 2012. BSU > You have a number of projects constantly on the go, such as running the Best Works label and producing solo material... how did you first get involved in the industry? If I am honest I started my career playing trance records in the early 90ies :) and then moving on to hip hop and finally house... BSU > What is your most memorable experience of your career so far? My most memorable moment was 1995 buying records in London. the stores in London had a totally different music selection compared to the stores in Berlin. The day I came back from London I played all the fresh tunes on a party in Frankfurt/Oder and the crowd went mad. The tune of the night was "Everybody be somebody" from Ruffneck. BSU > What inspires you? Everything that touches me in my life from bad weather to very personal emotions. BSU > In your mind, is there one album that you feel everyone should listen to at some point in their life and what is it? Kate Bush "Kick Inside", Radiohead "In Rainbows", Massive Attack "Protection", Talk Talk "Laughing Stock", Joni Mitchel "Both Sides Now",... BSU > Butter Side Up prides itself on its eclectic taste in music, what can we expect from your set on Friday? A journey from deephouse to techhouse and back with a touch of disco. BSU> Who are you looking up to at the moment? Can you tell us something about you that not many people know? I like to keep certain things private :) BSU > What can we expect from you in the future? As above mentioned my album incl. a double cd and two 12"es and of course a few new eps and remixes. Thanks Andre, see you on the 13th!

On this week's Across The Pond we skip back one year to a special I did with my good friend Darrell Scott. Darrell is one of the most successful songwriters in music having written hit songs for Brad Paisley, Reba McEntire, The Dixie Chicks, Sarah Evans, Travit Tritt and more. He is also one of the finest performers out there today and tours extensively around the world. I have had the pleasure of seeing Darrell play live many times and each time he takes you on a journey filled with stories of love and life. So last year Darrell released an album of covers, songs by other writers that he loves. The CD is called Modern Hymns and features music from writers like Paul Simon and Joni Mitchel. So I called Darrell at his home in Nashville and we chatted about his career so far and this unique record. Next week I will be back with a brand new show featuring new music from Tom Byrne, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Lumiere and Guy Clark
