Robert Preston and Dan O'Herlihy come along for the ride.  This was a fun one, but not everyone seemed to be in on the fun.  Listen to the podcast and find out who.

The Last Starfighter (1984)Whitey and Gow, and are back with another deep dive into a classic, and today we're joined by none other than Will the Plumber – our long-time fan and guest host for this episode. In the heart of the 1980s, a time when arcades reigned supreme and science fiction cinema was shaping itself into a formidable genre, Nick Castle's "The Last Starfighter" made its debut. A lesser-known gem compared to its contemporaries, the film crafts a narrative that is as old as storytelling itself – the ordinary individual thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Plot OverviewAlex Rogan (portrayed by Lance Guest) is the quintessential everyman, a teenager bound by the limitations of his trailer park home and the lure of a nearby arcade game. His talent for the game "Starfighter" isn't just a teen's idle pastime; it becomes the golden ticket to a grander universe. The arcade game, unbeknownst to Alex, is a recruiting tool for an extraterrestrial alliance in need of pilots to defend the cosmos. As he navigates this newfound responsibility, the narrative unfolds.Highlights1. Relatable Hero's Journey: At its core, "The Last Starfighter" is a manifestation of the hero's journey, made famous by mythologist Joseph Campbell. Alex's transformation from an arcade champ to a cosmic hero is a timeless tale, making him a character audiences can root for.2. Innovative Visuals: The film made pioneering efforts in computer-generated imagery (CGI). For the first time, audiences witnessed an entire fleet of spaceships, starry dogfights, and alien landscapes brought to life without traditional model-based special effects. The graphical innovation set a precedent for what would become commonplace in future films.3. Supporting Cast: Beyond Guest's lead performance, the film features an ensemble of rich characters. Robert Preston's Centauri, the enigmatic recruiter, and Dan O'Herlihy's Grig, Alex's reptilian co-pilot, add layers of humour and heart to the narrative.Lowlights1. Tropes and Predictability: While the narrative is endearing, it often treads familiar grounds. The elements of the 'chosen one', the unsuspecting hero, and the grand battle against evil, although classic, can feel derivative.2. Aged Visual Effects: Though the film's CGI was groundbreaking in 1984, it has not aged gracefully. Modern audiences accustomed to the technological marvels of today's cinematic universes may find the graphics dated and less immersive.3. Character Depth: Alex Rogan's journey is undoubtedly compelling, but several secondary characters are deprived of a deeper narrative. The film's focus on its protagonist sometimes sidelines the richness that could have been derived from its diverse cast of characters.Cultural Impact and Legacy"The Last Starfighter" presents an interesting blend of Earthly nostalgia and space fantasy. At a time when arcade gaming was emerging as a significant subculture, the film's premise of a game being a gateway to a larger universe was novel. It became a part of the era's zeitgeist that championed the underdog, made evident in films like "Star Wars" and "Back to the Future". The film's synthesis of video gaming culture and sci-fi fantasy is arguably its most enduring legacy. In retrospect, it was ahead of its time, predicting a world where gaming would have ramifications beyond the screen. Today, as we witness the rise of virtual realities and e-sports champions, "The Last Starfighter" feels almost prophetic.ConclusionFor those who grew up in the 80s or those with an affinity for vintage sci-fi, "The Last Starfighter" is a nostalgic ride. It encapsulates a time when stories were unapologetically optimistic, when the ordinary could touch the stars, and when defeating a video game could earn you a place in a galactic battle.Despite its shortcomings and aged CGI, the movie still resonates with its core message – that hidden within the mundane can be the seeds of the extraordinary. It serves as a testament to the timeless allure of the hero's journey and stands as a tribute to an era that dreamt of galaxies far, far away, one arcade game at a time. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

If you've ever dreamt of being so good at a video game that it leads to your recruitment to defend the Frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada. Then get in loser! We're going back to 1984 to The Last Starfighter. Luke Skywalker....er....Alex Rogan has been playing Star Wars....er....Starfighter at the farm....er....trailer park for longer than I care to remember. Literally. The Last Starfighter is one of the earliest adopters of cgi in supporting a hefty part of a films aesthetic. And although it's glaringly obvious, there is a certain charm in the fact that the cgi generated universe resembles an actual video game. Robert Preston and Catherine Mary Stewart are a breath of fresh air, wonderfully offsetting Lance Guests' acting deficit. Funnily enough, the deployment of Alex's (Lance Guest) beta unit in the movie makes his primary character feel pretty stable. Until he deploys the Death Blossom that is! Curious? I thought so.

We've enjoyed the partnership immensely and his show has brought a new dimension to the podcast in the form of long-formed reviews and analyses of soundtracks. However, we felt the need to separate our version of the show from the version that he still produces on his own under the SOUNDTRACK ALLEY moniker. It will always remain a deep dive review into some of the best soundtracks of all time… scores that everyone should have in their collections… THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS. On this premiere episode of the newly rebranded THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, host Randy Andrews and Erik Woods talk about the film and score to the 1984 Nick Castle-directed sci-fi/fantasy/adventure film, THE LAST STARFIGHTER, starring Lance Guest, Robert Preston, Dan O'Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart, Norman Snow, and Kay E. Kuter. The film tells the story of Alex Rogan, a teenager recruited by an alien defence force to fight in an interstellar war. Randy and Erik also detail the numerous themes in the score, the recording of the soundtrack, the composition and form of the action material, and the heart behind the music, especially the finale cue "Into The Starscape" The original score for the film was composed by Craig Safan and was recorded by Lyle Burbridge in Los Angeles. The original soundtrack recording was originally released on Southern Cross Records both on CD and LP in 1987. Intrada Records expanded the album both in 1995 and 2015. Earlier this year, Intrada released the definitive release of the score featuring the same program as the 2015 version but with greatly improved sound quality. A long time ago in a trailer park not so far away, Alex Rogan broke the top score on an arcade game called “Starfighter.” Little does he know his high score sets in motion a chain of events where an alien race will recruit him to defend the “the Frontier” from the evil Xur and the Kodan Armada in a space battle.  He gets picked up in what will later become the Jonny cab in Total Recall, by an alien named Centauri, who is dressed like a 1950's dime store detective for some reason. He's must leave his hard-working mother, sexually charged would-be girlfriend and the rest of the trailer park behind when he decides to take off for a much-needed adventure. After the space base where Alex meets all the other weird and wild alien starfighters is blow-up, he becomes the Frontiers only hope for survival. The movie was the first to try and seamlessly blend CGI special effects with real-life and ended up with mixed results. But, does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent talk about guilt tripping would-be heroes into doing things they don't want to and see if this is the last time we watch this starfighter, or if the 10 minute trip to Rylos to bang bald chicks is worth the trouble.

We have today, 80s horror icon Michael Myers, also known as, Nick Castle. Director, writer, and actor - notable for directing The Last Starfighter (1984), Major Payne (1995), and Escape from New York (1981) among others.Nick's fictional character, Micheal Myers, in the Box Office $255 million-grossing Halloween film is possibly one of his most well-known roles that have been strongly supported by fans for years. He appears in the 1978 Halloween film as a young boy who murders his elder sister, Judith Myers. The same role is reprised fifteen years later in the sequel where he returns home to Haddonfield to murder more teenagers. In 1986 he wrote and directed the heartwarming fantasy drama film, The Boy Who Could Fly which tells the story of an autistic boy who dreams of flying and touching everyone he meets, including a new family who has moved in after their father dies.Filmmaking came naturally to Nick for a host of reasons. For one he grew up in a showbiz family. His father choreographed musical comedy films, while an uncle of his worked as a lighting designer on movie sets. At a tender age, his dad introduced him to entertainment through smaller roles in front of the camera and summer internships behind the scenes. There he grew a fondness for directing which inspired him to pursue film school at USC.Notoriety came quickly for Nick. Along with collegemates, Carpenter, Rokos, Longenecker, and Johnston, Nick worked cinematography and co-wrote The Resurrection of Broncho Billy - a short film they created while still in college that blew up and entered the academy consideration and won the academy award for live-action short film in 1970. Nick and Carpenter reunited and worked together again on Carpenter's 1974 sci-fi comedy, Darkstar, which follows the crew of the deteriorating starship Dark Star, twenty years into their mission to destroy unstable planets that might threaten future colonization of other planets. In 1984, Nick made his second directorial film which was quite groundbreaking. The Last Starfighter, became one of the earliest films to incorporate extensive CGI. The plot centers around video game expert Alex Rogan who, after achieving a high score on Starfighter, meets the game's designer and is recruited to fight a war in space. He's transported to another planet only to find out it was just a test. He was recruited to join the team of best starfighters to defend their world from the attack. Its popularity resulted in several non-film adaptations of the story in musicals, books, comics, games, etcNick was making innovative films long before most of the more popular guys came along. It is appropriate to consider his 80s sci-fi films as pioneering. Please enjoy my fun conversation with Nick Castle.

On the mic, today is 80s horror icon Michael Myers, also known as, Nick Castle who is also a director, writer, and actor - notable for directing The Last Starfighter (1984), Major Payne (1995), and Escape from New York (1981) among others.Nick's fictional character, Micheal Myers, in the Box Office $255 million-grossing Halloween film is possibly one of his most well-known roles that have been strongly supported by fans for years.

The Soulless Minions have been recruited by the star league to defend the frontier against Xur and the Kondan Armada. The Last Starfighteris one of our favorite movies from our youth, as it is with many others. Sure, it's effects may be dated, but the movie holds up. it's still so easy to slip into the shoes of Alex Rogan and battle to save the universe. Alex's high score on a misallocated 3D vector cabinet called Starfighter attracts the attention of its alien inventor. Whisked away from his devoted girlfriend and temporarily replaced with a sarcastic beta-unit simuloid, Alex is recruited into an armada of space combatants, the rest of whom are all immediately vaporized by the traitorous Xur on behalf of the Ko-Dan Empire. People actually like this movie. FAMOUS FOR: The feeling of nostalgia it seems to engender in people of a certain age. This is perhaps the only movie that suggests, without a trace of irony, that your video game skills can be appreciated by your elders and can lead to a magical future of greatness and achievement, in space, with lasers. Even The Wizard wasn't this rapturous towards gamers. PREPARE YOURSELF FOR: Corniness, or as they called it then, "sincerity." Specifically, the scene where -- after a fiery explosion destroys the simuloid double, and simultaneously a faraway space battle rages -- Alex's girlfriend looks up into the night sky and declares, in a total non-sequitur: "I love you, Alex Rogan." Please join us in welcoming Julia back to the show. This is her punishment for putting The Last Starfighter on our list.Original post located at searchforschlock.com.
