Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is novelist and screenwriter Adam S. Leslie, who's fiddling with the radio in the hope of picking up stray mysterious signals containing evidence of Maths-In-A-Box, I Heard Your Name by Martin Rev, Noble And Silver: Get Off Me!, The Great Reality TV Swindle, Codename MAT and 1, 2, 3 And Away!. Along the way we'll be encountering a Folk Horror Sean Maguire, listening to a 1970s heroin-y version of They Might Be Giants, recalling your school's 'Special Space Treat Day' and arguing over whether the best Catatonia album was the first one or the first one.You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/.If you enjoy Looks Unfamiliar, you can help to support the show by buying us a coffee here. Show Notes provided by Joe Peluso Episode art proved by Richie Garofalo Episode edited by Adrienne Garofalo "Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane!--No! It'sanother Superman origin!" Just before the onset of the ill-conceived New 52 Reboot, DC Comics tapped Geoff Johns and Gary Frank to delivera post-Infinite Crisis retelling of The Man of Steel's beginnings.Paying homage to past iterations of the character from across all media, yet delivering fresh and innovative choices to the lore, this pair of creatives crafted a compelling, fun read that reminded fans--new and old--why they adore the skies that Superman soars through. Join your hosts Keith and Joe for another Comics Comics of rediscovery, and reminiscenes. From the doomed planet Krypton, to the wavering wheat fields of Smallville, to the sky scratching spires of Metropolis the guys examine in detail this mini-epic of the world's greatest hero's beginnings. Comparisons to John Byrne and Mark Waid origin epics are discussed. How much did the TV show Smallville inform the choices made by Johns and Frank? Was this a soul-searching emotional story of self-discovery, or a towering tale of inspiration? And what the heck was in those Lex Corp donuts that Rudy Jones scarffed down? All comic book aficanadoes have their favorite characters, and all Superman devotees have a Last Son of Krypton origin they treasure."Superman: Secret Origin" is one of those classic gems. Back to the days when radio brought to life hours of dramatic entertainment to millions of avid American listeners, one phrase was often heard that thrilled both young and old alike--"UP! UP! AND AWAY!"
Show Notes Provided by Joe Peluso "Avengers Assemble!" "Titans Together!" "It's Clobberin' Time!" And of course--"UP! UP! AND AWAY!" The summons has been issued, and the back door to Mintcondition Comicshas been unbolted! Furiously flying in from all the corners of Port Washington are those stalwarts of salutations, James, Chris, and Joe to heroically host another "back of the store chat!" No topic is too tenacious to tackle! New movie trailers, pop culture news and views, and recommendations abound when the boys relax, review, and reminisce. There will be time enough to save all of existence--once the dialogue and fun are done!
And Away to the Ends of the Earth.
In a packed episode, El Tele plugs two books, and alarmingly changes the way he's breathing by taping his mouth shut! We both comment on Lana Del Rey, and trail the Kill Boksoon film and Schmigadoon series. The Captain finds all of Rich Hall's BBC documentaries on YouTube. We say goodbye to Barry Humphries and Jerry Springer. The main course for this episode is our Downsizing - selecting the DVD box set, movie, album and book we'd take to our mythical tiny house. Find out what we (and a couple of listeners) have selected. We hope all our listeners with suggestions will come on the show to talk about them, because our memory is terrible!Stay tuned also for the cross-cultural food-based rant! Sign up for the bookmark newsletter here Welcome to 2023 and to 'season two' of Steph's Business Bookshelf. ICYMI, this year I'm experimenting with a slightly different style of episode, featuring reviews of what I read over the last month. There'll still be occasional 'three big idea' episodes popping up throughout the year, and the four years and 197 other book based episodes will still be in the back catalogue to be enjoyed. January is always a more book-heavy month, and this one was no exception. This month I'm talking about... And Away by Bob Mortimer (audiobook) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In this 2017 episode of "Two Way Street", platinum-selling songwriter Jimmy Webb stopped by to talk about his first memoir, "The Cake And The Rain." Artists from Frank Sinatra to Barbara Streisand have recorded Webb's songs. Some of his hits include “Up, Up and Away,” “Wichita Lineman,” “MacArthur Park,” and “By The Time I Get to Phoenix.” Our conversation begins with a discussion of his childhood in rural Elk City, Oklahoma. He explains how his mother's “iron will and sometimes anger” drove him to the piano. Plus, Webb talks about the time he was out plowing a field when a voice on the radio captivated him. It belonged to Glen Campbell, who became a close collaborator of Webb's. He reveals the story behind his celebrated classic "By The Time I Get To Phoenix," for which Campbell won two Grammy awards. Webb also talks about his hit "Wichita Lineman," another song that Campbell recorded. Once, at the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Billy Joel described “Wichita Lineman” as being “emblematic of an ordinary man having extraordinary thoughts.” Our conversation also covers the making of “MacArthur Park” and “Up, Up, And Away.”
Episode Notes We discuss Bob Mortimer's autobiography And Away... as read by Bob Mortimer. Bob Mortimer's life was trundling along happily until suddenly in 2015 he was diagnosed with a heart condition that required immediate surgery and forced him to cancel an upcoming tour. The episode unnerved him, but forced him to reflect on his life so far. This is the framework for his hilarious and moving memoir, And Away… Although his childhood in Middlesbrough was normal on the surface, it was tinged by the loss of his dad, and his own various misadventures (now infamous from his appearances on Would I Lie to You?), from burning down the family home to starting a short-lived punk band called Dog Dirt. As an adult, he trained as a solicitor and moved to London. Though he was doing pretty well (the South London Press once crowned him ‘The Cockroach King' after a successful verdict), a chance encounter in a pub in the 1980s with a young comedian going by the name Vic Reeves set his life on a different track. And now, six years on, the heart condition that once threatened his career has instead led to new success on BBC2's Gone Fishing. Warm, profound, and irrepressibly funny, And Away… is Bob's full life story (with a few lies thrown in for good measure.) Thanks for listening. #346 RETRACTO! - After four years Richard has noticed a hubristic plaque at his local cricket pitch and is gunning for North Herts District Council - they will regret crossing him. His guest is a return of the number 1 RHLSTP guest and number 2 human being (after Michael Palin) Bob Mortimer. There's so much fun including the benefits of coiling like a snake, the mystery of the tiny sink, retractable genitalia, the magic of having your heart touched, the wisdom that comes from a brush with death, an emergency joke book, why Bob is a fish who has been put back in the water, Bob's part in Jarvis Cocker's showdown with Michael Jackson and the Hells Angel Farmer who shagged his way to making Bob a comedian. And so much more.I could not recommend Bob's book more. Barry Allen and Iris West Have very inconsiderate friends – serious faux pas to not RSVP in a timely manner Barry: I got the girl; has Kara sing proposal song; tears in eyes when sees Iris walk down aisle Wedding interrupted by Nazis from Earth-X Will they ever be rid of Thawne? Oliver – cherish each other, always find each other Barry – we should've eloped Barry doesn't kill Thawne Barry brings Diggle to Central City; Diggle vomits Barry – sweetest vows ever, "You're my home" Iris – anything is possible with you by my side, Barry Iris West and Felicity Smoak Conversation about why Felicity doesn't want to marry Oliver Work together to free those trapped in pipeline; Die Hard reference – go through the biggest air shafts ever Beat up two Nazis Felicity signals the rest of the Legends Felicity shuts off power Beat up more Nazis, try to save Kara Felicity doesn't give in to Thawne until Kara tells her to Work together to take down Nazi Waverider Martin Stein and Jefferson Jackson Cisco and Well perfect cure for Firestorm – both will no longer have powers Martin happy to be able to go back home Martin offers to make Jax The Spectacular Sticky Man Jax upset – he sees Martin as the father he didn't have Martin admits Jax is like a son to him Kick some ass as Firestorm Manuel override at platform; they have to split up to make the override thing work Stein gets shot while going to turn on override, makes way to switch (Why aren't the others more active during this? More Snart, more Ollie?) Gideon can't save Stein; Jax's bond with Stein keeping Stein alive Stein knows he's dying, knows he's killing Jax; tells Jax to give him Firestorm cure; let me die, so you can live Stein – you have your whole life ahead of you, let me go Jax stays with Stein till the end; "I hope your life is long and full of love" Jax has to tell Stein's family "For the Professor" Funeral Sara Lance and Alex Danvers Alex still not over Maggie, gets drunk with Sara Alex and Sara have a one-night stand; Alex freaks out Alex second guessing breaking up with Maggie; Sara tells her to trust her instincts At church, rip dresses, fight Nazis, capture Prometheus X Sara bi on every Earth Sara talks Alex after going after Nazis alone; Sara tells Alex about losing Laural Sara – you're on my team, Danvers Kara and Alex Both lamenting over being single Alex – gain break-up weight; Kara – let's go to wedding Kara – still thinks she's going to be alone Alex works to convince General Winn and others to give them time to go back to their Earth to save Kara Dark Ollie and Overgirl Take advantage of Kara being on Earth 1 – no Superman to interfere Overgirl needs a new heart – Kara's is to be the donor Married Overgirl dying from too much radiation; going to go supernova, Kara gets her in orbit Dark Ollie killed by Oliver Dark Ollie, Overgirl and Thawne Thawne upset they attacked too soon Thawne worried they will not follow plan – conquer Earth first, save Overgirl second Thawne wears Wells's face for Barry – our Thawne Infighting – Dark Oliver needs to be 10% less brooding Need a prism Nazi Waverider arrives Thawne gets everyone to Nazi Waverider, which is voiced by Susanna Thompson Snart and The Ray The Ray in a concentration camp Snart frees The Ray and the team Snart and The Ray in love, but Snart hits on Sara; this Snart bi? "You people have breaches, but no mustard" - always eating; gets German mustard from Caitlin "I knew I could count on you, pretty. Did you bring beers?" - Getting rescued by Nate from pipeline Seeing Snart - ghost is back "I'm dead on Planet Nazi" Sick he died saving "pigs" Funeral - "allergies" Calls Sara "boss" Asks Sara if she "hit that" when he sees her and Alex Favorite fight or aspect of crossover SP - Opening fights montage was well done intro to the cross over Arrow Episode Simultaneous Danville Shipping Depot & STAR Labs fight Nice Arrow van that mowed down Ravager in the final fight Girl at the wedding. Jessica Parker Kennedy as “Caterer” Supergirl sings the wedding march William Katt - Minister (Greatest American Hero) Chris - The wedding fight is a great team up fight that gave everyone a chance to shine. JL should take notes. Michelle – Girl Power Caitlin Snow: helps with cure for Firestorm and treatment of Stein; Killer Frost important in fight, does her slide on ice during big fight; takes Amaya and Zari to Nazi Waverider & three kick Nazi butt Iris/Felicity team up Supergirl – ice breath, beats up Overgirl Smart ladies Alex with her gun and moves; Sara's skills - roundhouse kick to Nazi What didn't like SP- Different episode feel for all four (different directors) Lack of B team characters in own timeslots Why did Citizen Cold Stay On Earth 1? Weddings not on either Arrow or Flash "episode"/part. Where did Nazi General Lantz go? Aren't Oliver and Nyssa still married? Chris - Wally got screwed over on his appearance. Disappears on Flash for part of the season and then gets to play babysitter for Joe the rest of the crossover. Booo. Send Wally to Legends! Ollie not doing great on the whole parent thing. Back to being GA and gets married without even talking to his son about it first. Michelle – Too close to home; some actually want an Earth-X today: Aryan perfection, getting rid of the weak, camps Favorite geek references / call outs / Easter eggs SP - Man In The High Castle "Oliver In The high Castle" IrisFelicity Terminator - When Metello blows up Ghostbuster “There is no God” [Only Zuul] Dark Archer to Harry The Great Escape (Steve McQueen bouncing ball in the hole) Harry in the Star Labs Prison Die Hard "Let's Go McClaine" IrisFelicity Chris - Supergirl said the line! Anytime you get to channel Christopher Reeve is a winner in my book. “You need to fly her up. Up! And away! Now!” Michelle – Supergirl beats up a Dominator ("These guys are so last year") The Ray – he will have his own CW Seed animated show, voiced by the actor playing him Supergirl to Overgirl - "General, would you care to step outside?" - direct quote from Superman 2 Any favorite quotes not mentioned yet? SP - “Oh man. I wish I could sleep fly” ~Felicity Part 1 “Ah, professor. Your...ahhhh...daughter insisted I not walk around your house naked so I found one of your dresses. You're out of milk.” ~Mick Rory Part 1 “Are you here for the bride or the groom?” “Well considering I've tried to kill the groom a couple of times it's probably best I ...ahhhh … sit on the bride's side.” Mick Rory Part 1 “Best Wedding Ever!!!” Mick Rory Part 1 “Well, Good thing we have a metric ton of smart people in this building. … And Rory. Let's get to work on finding our new friends from Earth X.” ~Barry Allen Part Two “Ok. We're all a little emotional. Here's what I suggest. I will stop vibrating my hand. YOU stop breaking my wrist. And YOU be 10% less brooding.” Eobard Thawne, Part 2 “Well, punching Nazis! That was definitely as satisfying as I imagined it would be.” Alex, Part 2 “Just a quick reminder. Super speed. I don't have it!” ~Oliver Part 2. “Is that a Kryptonite Arrow? Why Do you have a Kryptonite Arrow?” ~Supergirl “In case an evil YOU ever showed up!” ~Oliver Part 2 “Well I once caught a deranged serial killer off his face cream. So….no joke.” ~Felicity Part 2 “Mustard. You people have breaches but no mustard?” ~Mick Rory Part 2 “I'm saving Nazi you for you.” ~Barry to Oliver Part 2 “I thought we were going to die” ~Iris “If I had a dime for every time I thought that I...I'd have $2.40. I really thought I'd have more than that.” ~Felicity Part 2 “Take that you Nazi mother...whoa!” ~Felicity Part 3 “Come with me if you want to live” ~Iris to Kara Part 3 “It is the strongs duty to protect the weak” ~Oliver to Smoak Part 3 “Good. That'll give me time to talk to...myself.” ~Overgirl Part 3 “I hate Fire.” ~Leo Part 3 “Look, fingerless gloves….” ~Sara to General Schott Part 3 “It was Oliver In The High Castle” ~Felicity Part 2 “I died trying to save pigs? I'm gonna be sick” ~Mick Part 4 “You need to fly her up, up, up. And Away. Right now” ~Harry Part 4 “Who needs an Army when you've got Legends” Nate Part 4 “Oliver got the girl I got a life of adventure on a time-traveling spaceship.” ~Ray Part 4 “I just love a good pop culture reference in a moment of ‘Crisis'” ~Cisco Part 4 “Cut the chatter Red 2, Fly the ship.” ~Harry Part 4 Chris - “His wife? Gross! … No offense.” - Kara about being married to Ollie in Earth X “The only thing we know about each other is what we look like with clothes off. Beautiful, by the way.” - Sara about Alex “You're not my partner. You're a gangbanger.” “I think you mean doppelgänger.” - Leo and Mick Michelle - "Why is it so bright here? Don't they have clouds on this Earth?" (Alex to Kara after one-night stand) Oliver arrives last - "Just a quick reminder, super speed – I don't have it." Rate the crossover SP - F. My 8 year old nephew could have produced a better product. Chris - Could be used to teach a lesson on how to cross over so many characters. I think they pulled off the team up better than Justice League because people were more invested in this than DCEU. Michelle – Awesome; focused on core characters, only brought in others for big fight NEXT EPISODE Link to Promo: (Date: 29 Nov 2017) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7okT1lJ2TL4 Episode: “Irreconcilable Differences” [Season 6 Episode 9] Air Date: Thursday, December 7 (mid-season finale) Summary: Black Siren and Cayden James kidnap Quentin to get their hands on a weapon of mass destruction.
